CLARA'S LOOM

at

Clara’s Loom Classes “My most popular class is the TRY-IT CLASS: Weave a Fashion Bib,” Dionne said. “It can be fun and it can be intense but without previous weaving knowledge or experience a person can weave a fashion accessory while being introduced to new types of yarns. I teach this to individuals or small groups of up to 6.” TRY-IT CLASS: Weave a Bias Square is also popular. Class size 6. This takes half a day. TRIANGLE SHAWL WORKSHOP is a three day workshop and I prefer 2 to 3 students but when more looms are available I can teach 5. WEAVE A TAPESTRY NECKLACE is new and I can accommodate 6-8. This is a half day class. It is a traditional style of off-loom weaving. *Students bring a lunch to the Coastal Textile Center for full day sessions. 8 Beachin’ ● January 2017

“One reason I am teaching these off-loom techniques is the portability of little looms for travel and downsizing,” Dionne said. “You can have a project in a baggy. All the looms are available for sale at Clara’s Loom.”

By Destiny Brown

To cater to our winter visitors, different venues at the beach offer hands on activities and classes. Try something new this month. It’s always a good time to pick up a new hobby! If you’re looking for a craft that takes a longer stretch of time than your normal DIY project, take a class from Celia Dionne at Clara’s Loom in Orange Beach. The venue offers instructed projects while teaching participants how to weave

everything from a shawl to a tapestry necklace and more. Dionne teaches upon request, but if she does post a new class it will be on Facebook at facebook.com/ clarasloom. “I suggest that a Snowbird try one of my classes for several reasons,” Dionne said. “Learn something new. Learn something that lots of people have never tried, but is a trending craft interest. Learn something to pass on as a gift or gift of knowledge.

Learn a traditional skill and gain an understanding of what goes into the production of textiles, which are a part of our daily life.” The classes at Clara’s Loom are fit for beginners and experts. The technique is a learning experience to all. “My special niche is weaving with a continuous strand of yarn on special frame looms,” Dionne said. “I teach this technique to weavers and novices alike. No knowledge and no experience is necessary to complete an item. There is no counting or measuring of yarn and no threading of looms so I find it a good crossover activity for weavers, quilters and artists because I have a little discussion of what you can do beyond learning the technique.” The response Dionne has received from the participants of Clara’s Loom has been positive and her goal is to teach something unique to her students. “The feedback I get is fantastic and so positive that I developed these classes to help promote weaving to the public,” Dionne said. “There are very few places in the US where a person can walk in and meet a weaver outside of craft shows and historic venues. Whereas those endeavors are important, they wouldn’t exist without the spread of weaving knowledge to the public.” Clara's Loom is located at 7518 Riverwood Dr, Foley. Please call 251-943-2960 to set up appointments.

BEACH ART

Lila Harris Underwater Photographer “My inspiration is to show people the beauty of the ocean and the diversity and the incredible creatures that live in our ocean that people might not know about. They are fascinating creatures.”

by Destiny Brown Lila Harris, Orange Beach based underwater photographer, has been diving for more than 20 years. Her experiences as a diver have led to photo opportunities that are unique and take skill to capture, and Harris loves to capture the treasures that lie under the ocean’s surface. “It’s been a growing process,” Harris said. “I started like many divers do, with point and shoot photography. As I explored the beauty of the ocean, I just wanted more. I wanted to capture it in a more beautiful way so I kept striving and growing as a photographer and an artist in order to capture what I could see myself.” Harris grew up around photography, but it wasn’t until she began diving that she fell in love with the colors, shapes and sea life that she enjoys specializing in. Most of Harris’ photography is of the Alabama Gulf Coast, where she lives and loves, but she has traveled around the world to Bali, Thailand, Papau, New Guinea and more. “I love going to new places and seeing new species of sea life to capture,” Harris said. “My inspiration is to show people the beauty of the ocean and the diversity and the incredible creatures that live in our ocean that people might not know about. They are fascinating creatures.” Lila is the sole owner/photographer of Aquatic Soul Photography, which offers local photo sessions, commercial work with trained underwater models, collectable art in local galleries and online, and unique perspectives of the underwater world from extensive diving travels. “I think underwater photography challenges me more because it’s a whole different skill set,” Harris said. “First of all, you have to be a good diver, and you have to be able to control your position in the water. Your fins have to be up and your body in a place that doesn’t damage the coral or sea life. It’s a challenge to capture these action packed creatures, but also the lighting is lost once you go 20 Beachin’ ● January 2017

underwater, you lose most colors. You have to learn where to position your strobe and how to best capture the sea life without hurting them.” Harris is an associate member of the Women’s Diver Hall of Fame. She is recognized for capturing the sinking of the “LuLu” in 2013, the Capt Shirley Brown in 2015, and other Alabama artificial reefs. She has written for and been published in Scuba Diving, Guy Harvey, All at Sea, Alert Diver magazines and many online and local publications. Harris is also PADI Master Scuba Trainer and local advocate with over 3,000 dives. She has served as a travel leader for her local dive shop on international adventures. Harris is a board member of the Alabama Gulf Coast Reef and Restoration, where she was instrumental in creating Poseidon’s Playground, an ongoing shallow reef project for young and novice divers. This site now offers 12 statues/structures at 38 feet. She educates people with her speaking engagements as a volunteer for the Alabama based “Share the Beach” turtle conservation program/patrol and as team captain for Alabama Coastal Cleanup. “The community in the Gulf Coast area is extremely supportive and I personally love being part of the Gulf Coast because I love everything related to the water,” Harris said. “I am surrounded by all the activities and all the fun we have and I can share with people even more so what’s off shore or underwater.” More of Harris’ work can be seen at aquaticsoulphotography.com. Her work is also displayed at the Coastal Arts Center and the Prosperous Pelican in Orange Beach as well as at Full Armor in Foley. In 2017, Harris is launching an intensive, intermediate underwater photography class, held four times per year, that will greatly help the average frustrated novice photographer to improve their skills in capturing sea life, lighting, and helpful editing techniques in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014

It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets 22 Beachin’ ● January 2017

very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

Anthony’s salon is at 23175 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach & their phone number is 251.974.1514. Please say we sent you! www.anthonyjonesinc.net

on fishin with Phil Dortch

New year, new challenges 2017 brings on a new set of challenges for fishermen on the Gulf Coast and around all coastal states. It has already been announced by Marine Resources that Triggerfish will probably not even open in 2017. This is quite frustrating since it’s the majority of fish we catch while bottom fishing other than Red Snapper, which is always up in the air as to when and if we will have an open season. January typically brings colder weather and rougher seas, but that doesn’t have to leave the diehard fisherman sitting on the couch. Here in Alabama, we are blessed with an abundance of inland waters including rivers, lakes and the Mobile Delta.

Bull Redfish

For reasons unknown, Bull Redfish have been scarce on Dixie Bar all summer, but Capt. Ringo Nelson has been having great success in Weeks Bay and Fish River. Follow the bait fish to find the bigger fish. Whether it’s Pogies or shrimp, fish have to eat and that’s where you will catch them. Anchor up where you see bait, drift your bait under a cork, let the tide run and wait for the big ones to attack.

Speckled Trout

Speckled trout is another target species for winter fishing in area rivers, Mobile Delta and Little Lagoon. Look for birds

feeding on shrimp. You will often see a slick on the water as a result of feeding trout. A popping cork often works or you may need to fish deep depending on conditions that day.

Flounder

Flounder are migrating toward the Gulf so don’t overlook Little Lagoon, Fort Morgan, or Perdido Pass. They love live shrimp and Bull Minnows, but will also hit artificial lures such as Berkley Gulps. If you have a Kayak, try Shelby Lake in the Gulf State Park on Hwy. 182. I have caught Specks, Redfish, Catfish, Bream and Bass while trolling Mirror Lures.
