For most of the month, it’s that time most Gulf Coast residents wait all year for, Mardi Gras. February boasts an abundance of Mardi Gras parades along the Gulf Coast, and this issue of Beachin’ lists the parade schedule from Orange Beach to Mobile. On Valentine’s Day, treat your sweetheart to the romantic events happening right here on the beach. As for our northern visitors, Snowbird Clubs host a series of events such as Bratfest and the annual Low Country Boil to entertain our friends from the north. Don’t miss out on the exciting events happening on the Island!

Get artsy at Gulf Coast Arts Alliance The first Art Market of 2015 hosted by the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance, in partnership with the City of Gulf Shores, will be Feb. 7. Local and regional artists will display for sale original paintings, pottery and jewelry as well as wood, metal and textile art.

Among those who will be exhibiting their work is professional photographer, Dorie Parsons. Parsons received her bachelor of fine arts and master of art Parsons education degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. She taught art, photography and humanities to students in grades kindergarten through graduate school. After teaching in Virginia, Parsons joined the U.S. Department of Defense and taught on overseas military bases for thirty years. She has been an instructor for Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Maryland, University of Hawaii, and San Diego State University.

Her artwork has been published and exhibited in several countries and she has published several books. Having visited 115 countries, Parsons’ residence is in Orange Beach, when not at sea teaching digital photography and image editing for HighSeas Computer Services on Celebrity, Holland America, and Oceania cruise ships. Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit!

It was a beautiful summer morning when we left Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and getting a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot.

We have both been very dissatisfied with the last few attempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideration our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother.

The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on time to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beautiful.

Pam, my friend, went first since I was a little chicken after the last experiences.

Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, after that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condition her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right.

So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep conditioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of motion, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair.

Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the conditioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condition our hair the same.

Anthony explained that at all times our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily.

After we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and conditioning my hair had ever had.

While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. After shampooing and before conditioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, putting any conditioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more.

After she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bottle. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

Iowa Snowbird Club The club plans to have a 50/50 lottery at its breakfast’s. Money the club makes from the 50/50 will be used to help defray expenses for prizes at the cocktail parties and at golf outings.

Cocktail parties are set for on Feb. 6 from 5-7 p.m. at Phoenix on the Bay in Orange Beach. No RSVP required but participants are asked to bring a dish to share and personal beverages.

on fishin’ with Phil Dortch Years ago while living and working in North Alabama, I would collect fishing related articles that had anything to do with Mobile Bay, Delta Rivers, Fort Morgan, Dauphin Island or the Gulf.

Many of these articles date back to 1992, all collected from a variety of salt water fishing magazines. As a result, I have a notebook about two inches thick filled with valuable information relating to the area which I now have the privilege of living and chartering my own boat. Oddly enough, after recently reviewing my collection, I only had one article about sheepshead fishing. That being one of my favorite fish to catch and eat, it beckons me to share what I have learned during the past 10 years.

First we must obtain the proper bait. Sheepshead are finicky eaters. I have never caught one on any artificial bait. So what does work? Live or fresh dead shrimp or fiddler crabs are my first choice.

However, both can be hard to find during the winter months. Try finding a grassy area near bay inlets, looking for holes, a warm sunny day and you may get lucky and see the fiddlers scampering back to their holes. It’s much easier to buy them at local bait shops. I have traveled from Fort Morgan as far as Gulf Breeze, Fla., to find them. Obviously, call before you go. When I do find some, I will buy 10 to 12 dozen at about $2.25 a dozen.

Live shrimp only last for the one day of fishing, but I have kept fiddler crabs for weeks. Put them in an old ice chest, sand in one end, tilt slightly and salt water from your area in the other end near the drain. Change the water daily. No need to feed them as some will die thus feeding the others. If the weather is cold, simply clip a light to keep them warm.

Sheepshead don’t bite everything all the time. I was fishing under the bridge in Destin, catching nothing on my expensive live shrimp. A local fisherman near me had an ice chest full. Of course I had to ask what was his secret and oysters was his reply. I find them growing on old pier post or rocks, break them off, shuck and cut them into pieces. They love them.

On another occasion while fishing at a pier near Perdido Pass, and yet again catching nothing on my fiddler crabs, I noticed some snowbirds with a bucket full of fish using ghost shrimp, something I never even heard of before. Note, they make great pompano bait. Ghost shrimp can be caught using a PVC gizmo that sucks them out of their holes which are at the waters edge. Such an apparatus can usually be purchased at local bait or tackle shops or you can make your own.

Now that we have bait, where do we go. From January through May, they can be caught around piers, rocks, man made reefs or Gulf or bay gas rigs. They are masterful bait stealers. One tap and they have your bait.

One old timer once said, “jerk your line just before he bites.” That’s about right. Some people fish by numbers (drop your line, count to 10). If no bite, try again count to nine and so on. When you get a bite, that sometime indicates how long it takes them to bite.

There are different methods of hooking to the rigs.

Safety is always the main concern especially if the water is rough. Shepherd crook type rig hooks work well, or simply toss a rope over a pipe. If using a rope, tie one end to the boat, throw the other end over a pipe bringing it back to tie the second end to the boat. When you get ready to leave, simply untie one end and pull the rope in. Don’t tie directly to a pipe. It’s dangerous and difficult to loosen especially in rough water.

Use a rubber snubber as a shock absorber. Tying to a rig has its disadvantage. You have to fish straight down and risk damaging your boat. My preferred method is to anchor up current, stopping a safe distance from the rig and fishing with a slip cork.

There are many advantages to the slip cork method.

You can detect the slightest bite, fish at any depth, fish under or either side of the rig using the current.

How to rig a slip cork is simple. First, tie a string around your line (they come pre packaged with a bead used for this purpose.) Next thread the cork on the line, then tie on a swivel. So far you have the string tied on your line, then a bead, the cork, then a swivel.

Next cut about two feet of line, tie it to the swivel then tie a hook at the end. Add enough split shot to the line above the hook to sink your bait depending on the current. Simply adjust your depth by sliding the string up or down.

Remember the limit is 10 per person per day. Use a net and be aware of the sharp dorsal fins. One way to handle them is to use two fingers holding them by the eyes.

Many people don’t like to catch Sheepshead because the are quite difficult to clean. There is an easy way which I will discuss in detail next month, but basically I use an electric knife with a sharp pointed blade and avoid cutting through the rib bones. The meat makes excellent table fare and in my opinion are as good or better than red snapper which we probably won’t be able to catch next year, but that’s another story.

Pesto Crusted Sheepshead Filets Ingredients • 1/3 cup Parmesan grated cheese • 1/3 cup pine nuts • 1/3 cup fresh basil leaves • Garlic clove • 1/3 cup olive oil Preparation Blend all ingredients together till

smooth. Sprinkle skinless filet with kosher salt then spread a spoonful of pesto mixture on one side of filet.

Heat electric skillet or griddle to 325 deg. (no oil) Place filet pesto side down. Cook till crusted.

Flip and cook other side till flaky.

the conversation turned to talking about things John was helping with at the rebuilding of the bar. Before the conversation ended, they had a deal written out on a napkin laying out the”ground rules”. Before finishing their coffee, John was the new majority owner.

“We didn’t set out to do that, it just happened. It was meant to be,” said McInnis.

John then transitioned out of being a full-time contractor to being a part-time contractor, and full-time owner and operator of the Flora-Bama along with his C.O.O., Cameron Price (a former West Point graduate and Army Ranger).

For the past five years, John has poured his heart and soul into it. The Flora-Bama has been named the top roadhouse beach bar in the United States, and the world

by Playboy magazine, CNN, Yahoo, The Travel Channel, the Huffington Post and dozens of other magazines.

I asked about the Flora-Bama Yacht Club and John’s response was that he grew up here riding around on boats, going from Lulu’s, to Pirate’s Cove to Bare Point Marina. He felt that at the end of the day they were always tired, covered in sweat, sand and suntan lotion, and never felt like getting cleaned up to go out to eat.

John decided to have a beach bar/shack where you could come as you are, and have “awesome” food. Hence was born, The Flora-Bama Yacht Club with a great chef, Chris Sherrill as a Yacht club partner and master chef.

Originally, the land is where the musicians stayed in their campers.The kitchen is built out of the old tool

shed of the Flora-Bama, the bar is made of the gazebo that was on the front of the campers that the musicians lived, and along the side of the building, the musicians still live there.

I asked John whose idea it was to have Sunday services there, and his response was that it was “God’s”.

John was approached to have a church service under the tent on Sunday mornings. John said sure, and they all assumed there would be a dozen or so people show up.

The first Sunday, over one hundred people came. The next Sunday two to three hundred showed up, and within a few months they were averaging 500. Now there are about 700, and there were over 2,400 people coming last Easter. It’s a no judgment zone, and those that come to the service, leave feeling different from when they arrived.

John says its’ one of the most significant things that’s ever happened to the Flora-Bama. He says he can’t imagine not having a Sunday service. John says he’s blessed.

We’ve led a great life and have had some wonderful opportunities. We’ve worked hard, and appreciate what we’ve earned. I pinch myself every day that I can live at the beach, and run a famous beach bar. How wonderful to have John on the Island, and how fortunate I am to be able to call him my friend.

Celebrating familial love on Valentine's Day

By Theresa Corbin Contributing writer For most of us, Valentine's Day evokes thoughts of conversational heart, saccharine sayings on cards, drug store chocolates, overpriced roses and most of all-- romantic love. As we approach February 14th, most of us are either planning to spend time with that special someone or dreading a day alone. But what if we look at this year's day of love in a new way?

Who says that Valentine's Day must be reserved for expressions of romantic love? Why not use the day to express a more lasting kind of love than romantic love?

Familial love? Celebrating familial love on Valentine's Day can make more sense than spending too much time and money on trite traditions.

Create stronger bonds with the family by using some (or all) of these ideas on The 14th of February.

#FamilialLove

If your family is online more than at the dinner table, then use that to your advantage. Create a family hashtag and have everyone post something nice about other family members throughout the day. Who knows, maybe your family's hashtag will go viral.

Coupon of Caring

If you have more than one child, have siblings make coupons for each others, like one free coupon for a room

cleaning. Use your children's strengths to share with their siblings. If your oldest is a math star have him or her make a coupon to help the younger one(s) with math homework. If your youngest likes to draw, have him or her make a coupon for one portrait sitting.

But don't waste paper on coupons, have your kids create their coupons virtually (a word doc using a table can do this nicely) and email them.

Crafting Love

For the family that is all thumbs, make a thumb print keepsake to remember for the rest of the year. Simply cut white card stock paper to the size of your frame of choice, have each family member press thumbs in red ink and press two thumb prints together to form a heart. Write each thumb print owner's name in a black sharpie.

Hang the thumb print hearts in the family room and enjoy the love and the memory of crafting together.

Get to the heart through the tummy

Breaking bread together is one of the best ways to bond.

But on the day of love, having a heart themed meal plan might encourage that bonding process.

For breakfast, try reshaping circular cinnamon rolls into hearts. It is easy and cute. For lunch, sandwiches can be cute into heart shapes with a cookie cutter. It is easier than cutting the crust off.

Sweet hearts with a sweet tooth

Valentine's day is known for the aisles and aisles of candy stacked at the store. Let your family know you truly care by ditching the store bought candy and making them sweets from scratch. Try making an over-sized kiss by forming a rice crispy treat inside a large funnel. Simply cover in foil and give crispy treat kisses to all you love.

You can even insert a sweet note on a paper plume sticking out of the giant kiss to make it extra sweet and a perfect doppelganger to its smaller, chocolate twin.

Classical guitarist comes to Orange Beach

P

eter Fletcher will come to Orange Beach as part of a nationwide tour, under the auspices of Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists, to promote his new Edvard Grieg CD, released in February by Centaur Records.

Fletcher will perform selections from this new CD, an all-Grieg album in which he himself wrote the guitar transcriptions. CDs will be available at the concert.

Other works will include Bach’s “Jesu,” “Joy of Man’s Desiring,” “Courante from the Third Cello Suite,” “Prelude in C minor” and “Fugue in G minor,” BWV 999 and 1000.

Fletcher will also perform music from Michael Praetorius’s Terpsichore; Prelude No. 1 by VillaLobos; a Fandango by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo and two Catalonial folk songs, arranged for guitar by Miguel Llobet.

In addition he will perform a very special version of the traditional Shaker Hymn, “Simple Gifts,” transcribed by John and B.J. Sutherland. The last half of this guitar setting modulates down a step to C major.

To accommodate this key change, the bass string of the instrument must be tuned down one whole step in performance, producing a sound reminiscent of a country fiddler.

1) Tents (no larger than a 10x10 ft.) are allowed on the beach, but they have to be placed behind (North of) the designated sign marker post and should be removed before night.

Tents cannot be placed between the sign post and the Gulf of Mexico. This is for designated emergency and safety access.

2) Pets are not allowed on the beach on the Gulf of Mexico or surrounding islands (Robinson, Bird, Walker). However they are allowed at the designated city Dog Park on Canal Rd. (Hwy 180) next to Sportsman Marina. All dogs should remain on a leash within the city limits.

3) Glass in any form (bottle, cup, container, etc.) is strictly prohibited on our beaches and islands.

4) A yellow or green flag posted along gulf beaches means to use caution while swimming in the gulf waters and is permitted.

A red flag means danger and one should not swim in the waters.

Double red flags mean that swimming in the waters is prohibited by law.

Purple means WARNING! A jellyfish or other marine threat.

5) All trails and parks are free and open from daylight to dusk 7 days a week.

6) Fires or flames are strictly prohibited on the beach. This includes grills, tiki-torches, lanterns, open fire pits, candles, fireworks, etc.

7) Jet skis, boats, and any other motorized vessels, are prohibited from launching along the gulf front beaches.
