I am absolutely eager to write about the place I love the most — the beach.

It's a beautiful place where I have seen local beach bums, snowbirds, spring breakers and fishermen congregate into a coastal community.

And I'm excited to cover it all.

I hope I don't get off on the wrong foot with Bama readers, but I graduated from Auburn University. War Eagle! I spent my time studying journalism and Spanish, graduating with a bachelor's degree in August 2012.

After graduation, I became interim editor of The Corner News, an entertainment newspaper, that circulates in the Auburn and Opelika area.

In Spring of 2013, I waved goodbye to the college campus I called home for more than four years. I traded in my textbooks for flip-flops and moved to the beautiful condo-lined shores of Orange Beach in pursuit of sunshine and a constant roll of waves.

I’m also a musician, and the prospect of getting beachside gigs lured me to the coast. In college, I began playing my guitar and singing the college bar circuit in Auburn, and I currently play guitar and sing at venues on the coast, from the FloraBama to Lulu’s.

I'm thrilled to be a part of Beachin' magazine and have big plans for what's to come. I can't wait to find out what else is beyond the white sands.

By Destiny Brown The Mardi Gras krewes of the Island have bundles of beads to throw, moonpies to toss and are prepared to “laissez les bons temps rouler!”

In other words, the krewes are ready to let the good times roll for this years Mardi Gras festivities.

The Mystical Order of Mirams The Mystical Order of Mirams, all ladies Mardi Gras association began in 2006 and has been bringing mothers, working women, neighbors and ladies involved in the coastal community together ever since.

Currently, there are 55 women in the group and members extend from all over Baldwin County to Atlanta, Ga. “We're based out of Mobile,” said Erin Thibodeaux, president and cofounder of The Mystical Order of Mirams. “We wanted to bring a traditional Mardi Gras to Orange Beach.”

Throughout the year, the Mirams give generous donations to charities of their choice with every event they host. The organization loves to keep donations local when they can.

“Throughout the year, we try to do different events and fundraisers,” Thibodeaux said. “It's the organization’s eighth year hosting its signature event, ‘Taste of The Island.’”

‘Taste of the Island’ is an event held annualy by the Order that offers local cuisine, cocktails and entertainment to raise money for a local charity.

“Events help with the costs and everything, but they also benefit Toys for Tots and the Orange Beach Fire and Rescue Ladies Auxiliary,” Thibodeaux said.

The group also hosts a Boat Race VIP Party at Turquoise Place every year.

The Krewe holds the only all women's nighttime parade on Pleasure Island followed by a beautiful ball held in traditional Mardi Gras fashion.

Typically the parade displays six floats. The Mirams rent their floats from Mobile every year, along with a couple of city floats, to bring a piece of New Orleans and Mobile to the beach.

The mile-and-a-half long parade

will begin Friday, Feb. 28 at Wintzell’s Oyster House on Perdido Beach Boulevard at 6:30 p.m. and will conclude at the Rite Aid on Hwy 51.

This year the band The Molly Ringwalds will be entertaining at the parade.

“I think this parade this year will be a lot bigger than last year,” Thibodeaux said.

Like every year, the area’s marshalls will be in costumes and will ride their horses alongside the floats in the parade.

The Mobile Bay Bears baseball team will also be participating in the parade.

The Sirens of the Sea The Sirens of the Sea pride themselves in being the first all women’s krewe on the Island. The Sirens established their sisterhood in 2002 and have been celebrating traditional Mardi Gras ever since. They are part of the annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup, present a scholarship every year to a local high school senior, adopt families at Christmas and contribute annually to charities like

the Lighthouse, Christian Service Center, Orange Beach Elementary School and Mary’s Shelter.

The Sirens host an annual Mardi Gras ball and participate in the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Mardi Gras Parades with their prancing horse and elegant mermaid floats.

Treasures of the Isle The Treasure of the Isle co-ed krewe preps for 12 months for Mardi Gras.

“We start our prep for the coming year before the end of our Mardi Gras season,” said Rita Essing, publicity chairman for the Treasures of the Isle. “As soon as the first Mardi Gras Ball starts to wind up, we’re already talking about committees and who will be ball chair and getting things rolling for the next year.”

The krewe participates in the Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Goodwill parade on Fat Tuesday, March 4.

Seventy members strong, members parade on the floats on a vol-

unteer basis. Masked members will volunteer to ride aboard the King float, the Queen float, and the Papa Smurf float, which is new this year.

The Treasure of the Isle ball is held on Feb. 1, and this year’s theme is “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

“It gives our winter visitors a chance to participate in something totally different from their every day lives,” Essing said. “The community gets so caught up with catching the beads — it’s something people have read about from New Orleans — they can come here and experience it.

Mystics of Pleasure The Mystics of Pleasure was the first Mardi Gras Krewe on Paradise Island. This parading society has been celebrating a traditional Mardi Gras on the coast since 2000.

The Mystics of Pleasure will kick off its parade Saturday, March 1 in Orange Beach at 5:30 p.m.

The Mystics hold many events throughout the year to raise money for Mardi Gras festivities, including the annual “Thunderrun,” the Hawaiian Luau, Golf Tournament and the Queen’s Reception.

The ball follows the parade and treats guests in a formal fashion complete with a joyous feast and entertainment. Attire for the ball is Mardi Gras style (costume de riqueur) — white tie and black tails for the men and formal, floor length only dresses for the ladies.

It was a beautiful summer morning when we left Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and getting a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot.

We have both been very dissatisfied with the last few attempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideration our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother.

The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on time to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beautiful.

Pam, my friend, went first since I was a little chicken after the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, after that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condition her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right.

So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep conditioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of motion, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair.

gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the conditioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condition our hair the same.

Anthony explained that at all times our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out.

Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. After we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and conditioning my hair had ever had.

While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. After shampooing and before conditioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, putting any conditioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself.

Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more.

After she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works!

Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bottle. Anyway our cuts cost us $40 each, best money we ever spent and yes we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

February is my favorite month on the water.

The cold pushes trout up the creeks and rivers, and if the rain slows down, they should be up the creeks in thick schools in the deeper holes. Most people go from spot to spot and drop plastic or live shrimp on the bottom and fish the hole very slowly. Then they gun off to the next hole and repeat the process again and again. If this method works for you then all’s well, but I’ve found that nothing works every time, and fishing is one of those things that prove that.

The key to this sport is to always have a new plan in case the last one doesn’t work. If you did a Yahoo search on how to catch specks in Febuary, you would most likely get more suggestions than you could try. Some would be crazy, but most have worked for someone at some time or other. It never hurts to try it.

When I leave a spot that resulted in just a few or no bites, I’ll try to troll a live shrimp in route to the next spot. You get to cover more area, and you may find some new spots.

Trolling shrimp is a little difficult because you have to go real slow and keep it below the surface. I troll closer to the banks in shallower water after the sun has been up for a while. If your sonar shows surface temperatures then you’ll notice that the water warms a little as the sun climbs higher in the air. This must allow the specks to move into shallower water, and that allows you to troll near the bottom without a bunch of weight.

It’s impossible to say how much lead you’ll need, as it depends on boat speed, wind, current, etc. Just keep the bait down and go slow to make it look as natural as possible. If all else fails, switch to plastics and us a small lead head hook. If it skips on the surface just go to a heavier chunk of lead.

Sheepshead are also here in February. Fish the bay rigs if the wind allows, and also fish the rigs south of the Mobile Bay pass. I use some braid line up to 60-pound test and 1/0 or 2/0 circle

hook on the bottom. Get as close to the rig legs as possible. Have some bumpers on board to protect your boat. If you have ever hooked a 10-pound sheepshead or skinned and cleaned a sheepshead, then battered and pan fried it, then you know how a box full of sheepshead will make for a better day for you.

a long and winding trail in your own backyard

The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail is open sunrise to sunset year round, weather permitting.

eachin’ is committed to getting active and staying active for the good health of Baldwin County. In the last issue, we discovered all that Bodenhamer Recreational Center has to offer for the health addict all the way to the novice.

This month, we are wandering down to the Hugh S. Branyon Backountry Trail.

Situated in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, the Backcountry Trail is a 13.5-mile network of trails that meanders among seven distinct ecosystems. It is a perfect way to get moving in the area, whether you a r e interested in hiking, jogging, biking, roller blading, skating or just a stroll.

Explore the network of trails all while getting to know the flora and fauna of our area.

“The trail is a network. We currently have about seven trails that make up the entire system,” said Phillip West, coastal resources manager

for Orange Beach and an officer with the Alabama Trails Commission. “You have trail heads in Gulf Shores, Gulf State Park headquarters, on State Park Road 2, at Orange Beach Sportsplex, in Orange Beach on highways 182 and 161. There are two trail heads, so it doesn’t really start and end. It is a system of interconnecting trails that crisscross and connect Orange Beach, Gulf Shores and Gulf State Park.”

The Backcountry Trail was established in 2003 with a short two-mile section called Catman Road.

“I drew the plan and thought up the concept, and Hugh Branyon, who was the State Park superintendent at the time, met with me and gave us a green light to pursue it.

We were successful in getting a series of grants [...] so it has been a collaborative effort across the board,” West said.

After 10 years, 13.5 miles and with the most recent stretch of trail in Gulf Shores called Coyote Crossing; the future looks bright for walkers, joggers, hikers and bikers because the trail will only expand from here.

“Now with Gulf Shores taking a very active role, we’re looking toward making something even bigger by combining the Backcountry Trail and the Gulf Shores Trail going out toward Fort Morgan Road under a system,” West said. “So it’s an island-wide effort at this point.”

The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail recently opened a boulder park off the Catman Road Trail, next to the picnic pavilion and butterfly garden, for those who want to take their workout vertical. This is just one of many amenities the trail has to offer for visitors young and old.

“We are hoping to have some cookouts and some lunches on the trail for people to meet and to enjoy a good time at the picnic pavilion,” West said.

Everyone is welcome on the trail, and according to a 2009 survey, people use use the trail for all types of exercise.

“Bikers made up just over 50 percent of the trail users,” West said.

“Walkers, pedestrians and joggers were around a little more than 40 percent. Then you have a few that ride skateboards or rollerblades.”

know your own strength and the amount of water you will need for your workout.

“It is a long trail, and I think a lot of people that go out for the first time discover that it really is a lot longer than they thought; then they have to go back,” West cautions. “So it is a great biking trail for those who know the distance and can read the maps and know their physical abilities. “For me, personally, I just take a bike. You get to see a lot more in a shorter period of time, and if you need to get back somewhere in a hurry, a bike is the way to go.”

Several events for the coming year and years to come for the trail are in the making.

Frequently Asked Questions 1) Tents (no larger than a 10x10 ft.) are allowed on the beach, but they have to be placed behind (North of) the designated sign marker post and should be removed before night.

Tents cannot be placed between the sign post and the Gulf of Mexico. This is for designated emergency and safety access.

2) Pets are not allowed on the beach on the Gulf of Mexico or surrounding islands (Robinson, Bird, Walker). However they are allowed at the designated city Dog Park on Canal Rd. (Hwy 180) next to Sportsman Marina. All dogs should remain on a leash within the city limits.

3) Glass in any form (bottle, cup, container, etc.) is strictly prohibited on our beaches and islands.

4) A yellow or green flag posted along gulf beaches means to use caution while swimming in the gulf waters and is permitted.

A red flag means danger and one should not swim in the waters.

Double red flags mean that swimming in the waters is prohibited by law.

Purple means WARNING! A jellyfish or other marine threat.

5) All trails and parks are free and open from daylight to dusk 7 days a week.

6) Fires or flames are strictly prohibited on the beach. This includes grills, tiki-torches, lanterns, open fire pits, candles, fireworks, etc.

7) Jet skis, boats, and any other motorized vessels, are prohibited from launching along the gulf front beaches.

It's that time of the year when snowbirds fly south for the winter, and state specified snowbird clubs allow visitors to flock together with their home state natives.

There's a busy early winter schedule among the Gulf Coast's snowbird clubs. Bratfest, the Low Country Boil and the Missouri Club's Trivia Night are lined up to keep winter guests happy on the coast.

by Ken and Lora Krouse from the Wisconsin Snowbird Club. They frequented the zoo and wanted to help with the nonprofit organization's fundraising. Last year's event raised $8,200.

“There has to be some kind of attraction and we draw 1,000 people every year for this,” said Ken Krouse, chairman of the Low Country Boil. “I guess it's the fact that we have good food and it's at the zoo. They can see the animals up close and sometimes the animals are right over almost eating with us.”

Our Northern visitors celebrate their love for the bratwurst, also known as the brat (pronounced “braht”), every year when 10 snowbird John Mullen / Staff clubs and hundreds of community members congregate for Bratfest.

“Bratfest was designed by several of the northern states to bring down a little of their flair to the community for a fundraiser,” said Cindy Sinn, chairman of the Snowbird Bratfest. “You’re bringing a lot of generations who want to volunteer, who want to donate time and want to do things and be productive to the community that they are participating in.”

More than 300 generous volunteers show up to serve at this event, along with members of the Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan Fire and Rescue departments, each of which received $1,800 from donations in 2013.

For $4 each, the brats are served on a bun, smothered in sauerkraut, relish, mustard, ketchup and topped with raw onions. More than 2,100 brats will be served at this year’s event. Coffee and soda will also be available for $1.

“It brings a little bit of the northern flair down here because brats aren’t Southern, they’re a Northern taste,” Sinn said. “It also allows the snowbirds to collaborate and to participate in the community where we live.”

Sinn was working with Bratfest as a snowbird in 2002, but she is now a year round Alabama resident.

time to tee off Rotary Club to host mini golf tournament for Snowbird clubs The Rotary Club of Gulf Shores/Orange Beach is hosting a mini golf tournament at Waterville Park’s facility in Gulf Shores.

The Smowbird club with the most entrants gets the trophy.

The event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 10 a.m., shotgun start. Entrants are asked to sign in before the start of the event. The cost of an 18-hole round is $10, and the proceeds go toward local scholarships and educational grants.

After the golf, hot dogs and a soft drink will be provided along with some camaraderie. Come early for sign in, and everyone can take off on different holes and at the same time.

The Lousiana Pantry’s Barbecued Chicken Potato Hash with Oven Dried Tomatoes Prepare the Chicken

Butcher one whole chicken by deboning and separating the breast from the leg quarter. Reserve the leg quarters for chicken confit, which will be used for the barbecued chicken potato hash.

Chicken Confit

n In a small casserole dish place: 2 Chicken leg quarters n Seasoned well with: Kosher salt Coarse black pepper n Add: 4 Sprigs of fresh thyme 2 Bay leaves 1 Head of garlic cut in half Cover chicken leg quarters with duck fat or pork fat, which has been rendered to liquefy. Vegetable oil can be used as a last resort. Place in a preheated oven at 250 degrees for 3 1/2 hours or until falling off the bone. Remove from fat, debone and shred chicken leg meat.

Oven Dried Tomatoes

Cut Roma tomatoes into quarters.

Place tomato quarters skin side down on a sheet pan with parchment paper.

Season tomatoes with coarse ground black pepper and kosher salt. Place in a preheated oven at 250 degrees for 2 hours.

Note: You can cook the tomatoes in the same oven as the chicken confit, as the oven is at the same temperature.

Season and pan roast the chicken breast. Place the chicken breast on top of the barbecued chicken potato hash. This will yield two servings.

Barbecued Chicken Potato Hash

n Melt: 1 1/2 teaspoons Butter in a hot sauté pan n Sauté: 1/4 cup Diced onions 1 teaspoon Chopped garlic 3 tablespoons Diced tomatoes 1 tablespoon Diced bellpepper n Add: 1/2 cup Chicken confit (shredded) 3/4 cup Diced fried potatoes 3 tablespoons Prepared barbecue sauce 2 tablespoons Chicken stock to moisten n Finish with: 1 tablespoon chopped parsley n Reseason: Kosher salt Black pepper Note: Fry the diced potatoes for approximately 4 minutes until golden brown.
