Fall has definitely made it’s way to our shores. Maybe it’s the chill in the air, but from a local’s point of view, the Island is nearing its wintertime slump.

And it’s not a bad thing. Though the beach is losing its sunbathers and summer vacationers, the shores remain a destination for many. Nationally renowned events such as the Frank Brown Songwriter’s Festival draw original artists and music lovers from all over while the Oyster Cook-off at The Hangout keeps the Gulf’s reputation for having the best seafood alive. Though it’s past the heat of summer, there are still many great days to be had at the beach.

Three-day weekend includes addition of craft beer kickoff party

T

he Hangout, in partnership with Alabama Gulf Seafood, will host the Seventh Annual Oyster Cook-Off and Craft Beer Weekend. The Oyster Cook-Off competition takes place on Saturday, Nov. 8 when 50plus chefs will compete in three categories for the best oyster, and patrons will have the chance to taste them all.

The festivities begin on Friday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. with the debut of the Oyster Cook-Off Craft Beer Festival presented by AL.com. Advance tickets (just $25 at hangoutcookoff.com) include beer from all participating breweries and great live music. More than 60-plus beers from more than 25 breweries will be featured.

Saturday's cook-off will feature live music, family activities and delicious Alabama Gulf oysters prepared by chefs from across the Southeast. Patrons can participate in cooking demonstrations, be a judge in the Bloody Mary Invitational and watch top chefs live in action. Tasting tickets will be available for purchase to sample the oysters, beer, wine, moonshine and champagne. Admission for Saturday's cook-off is free to the public.

This year's Oyster Cook-off includes an extra day of indulgence with our Sunday Brunch and Bloody Marys on Nov. 9. The brunch costs $25 (only $10 for kids 12 and under).

This marks the first year the Oyster Cook-Off has partnered with KCBS. Plus, attendees have the chance to declare their favorite for the AL.com People’s Choice award.

T

he Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival will celebrate its 30th birthday in style, presenting a memorable lineup of Grammywinning performers and up-and-coming hit-makers at venues in Perdido Key, Pensacola and along the Gulf Coast.

The festival is a perennial favorite for music lovers eager to hear songwriters not only perform, but also discuss how and why they wrote some of the world's greatest hits. The music covers the gamut, with hits written for everyone from George Jones to George Strait, Jimmy Buffet, Tim McGraw and Jason Aldean.

The event is based at the sprawling Flora-Bama Lounge astride the Florida-Alabama line, but numerous venues will be used as more than 200 songwriters perform there and in other nearby locations — everywhere from quiet listening rooms to raucous honkytonks. Both Billboard and American Songwriters magazines have recognized the granddaddy of songwriter

festivals. It's been called one of the Top 20 Events by the Southeast Tourism Society.

What's not to love? Great music performed by colorful storytellers near idyllic Gulf of Mexico beaches in the peak of fall.

The performers include such noted songwriters as Jim McBride, whose songs have been hits for Alan Jackson, Conway Twitty and Tammy Cochran; Austin Church, whose songs have been recorded by Jimmy Buffett and Lyle Lovett; and Scotty Emerick, who writes for and performs with Toby Keith, on such hits as “Get Drunk and Be Somebody,” “A Little Too Late” and “I Love this Bar.” The writers cover several eras of country music.

Dean Dillon, who has written 50 songs performed by the legendary George Strait, is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Jamey Johnson, who writes for himself and others, has won Country Music Association Awards as well as performed with Kid Rock and Willie Nelson.

Another featured artist will be singer Johnny Lee, whose “Lookin’ For Love” in the movie “Urban Cowboy” became a country classic. Lee, who has been touring in Texas much of this year, also has scored country hits with “Hey Bartender,” “Rollin’ Lonely” and more.

The festival includes a tribute at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 6 to the late Larry Butler of Pensacola, who wrote songs and produced music for Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, Waylon Jennings and many others. Butler was a big reason that many country musicians travel between Nashville and the Flora-Bama, a legendary beach bar and the recent setting for a free Kenny Chesney concert.

Most shows are free; a few venues charge a modest cover fee.

The festival is named after the late Frank Brown, who was night watchman at the Flora-Bama for 28 years before retiring at age 91.

FBISF Final Evening Of Song Salute to Hank Cochran

S

uperstar songwriters Dean Dillon and Jamey Johnson will salute Hank Cochran at a tribute concert at the Flora-Bama. The pair will host the event, gathering friends of the late songwriter for what promises to be an unforgettable night of music and memories.

Top-tier tunesmith Scotty Emerick (“Beer For My Horses,” “I Love This Bar”), joins the lineup, which also includes hit songwriter/producer Buddy Cannon (“Set ‘Em Up Joe,” “Give It Away;” Kenny Chesney, Willie Nelson, Jamey Johnson) and singer/songwriter Jesse Whitley, son of the late Keith Whitley. The tribute kicks off the final evening of the 11-day long 30th Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival, held “live on the line” from the worldfamous Flora-Bama Lounge.

Dillon, Johnson and Cannon all knew the late Cochran well. Dean and Buddy were longtime friends and co-writers of Hank’s, while Jamey became close with the NSAI Hall of Famer in his later years. In 2012, Johnson released the Grammynominated, “Living For A Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran.”

“If I had to dream up the best influence for songwriters, I couldn’t have done any better than Hank,” Johnson says. “That’s what he was — not just for me, but for Willie and for a lot of people — just a helpful friend. If he knew you needed help with something, he could help you.

He was there.” Johnson hopes this tribute will help carry Hank’s philosophy forward. “I want to be that kind of man for the people in my life; same as Hank. He influenced me, not only as an artist and songwriter, but also as a person.”

Dean and Hank shared a love of boats, and many of their songs were written on the waterways of Tennessee and Florida. As a writing team, they are perhaps best known for George Strait’s “Ocean Front Prop-

erty” and “The Chair,” and Keith Whitley’s classic “Miami, My Amy.” “Hank was definitely one-of-a-kind,” Dillon reflects. “We had some remarkable times together and I’m happy to be a part of this tribute.

His legacy deserves a tip of the hat.”

The Cannon and Cochran association was a long and fruitful one.

The two shared co-writer credits on the smash hit “Set ‘Em Up Joe” and, as a producer, Cannon’s door was always open to Hank. “He was absolutely one of the best writers of our time,” notes Cannon. “He was the world’s best songplugger and a great friend who is very much missed.”

A devoted fan of the FBISF, Cochran performed on the event’s many stages over the years. Club owner and Fest founder Joe Gilchrest recalls, “Hank was a great supporter of this festival. He was a wonderful friend to me, to songwriters and to musicians of all stripes. He is sorely missed, but I know these guys will do him proud.”

Cochran’s discography reads like a “Who’s Who” of contemporary music. His songs have been recorded by Chet Atkins, Junior Brown, Jimmy Buffett, Johnny Cash, Elvis Costello, Bing Crosby, Vern Gosdin, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Tom Jones, Loretta Lynn, Dean Martin, Wayne Newton, Elvis Presley, Reba, Linda Ronstadt, George Strait and Lee Ann Womack.

He penned numerous classic tunes, including “I Fall To Pieces,” “She’s Got You,” “Set ‘Em Up Joe,” “Is It Raining At Your House” and “Don’t You Ever Get Tired of Hurting

Me.” He has been awarded a 1967 inclusion in the Country Music Foundation’s Walkway of Stars, the unanimous vote that earned him his place in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1974) and a place in the Mississippi Musicians’ Hall of Fame (2003). His catalog has generated more than 36 million performances, which, if played back-to-back, would amount to more than 200 years of continuous airplay.

I

n a roundabout way, those four lads from Liverpool who took the music world by storm in the 1960s are coming to the Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival.

The 30th festival kicks off on Thursday, Nov. 6, and while the final day, Sunday, Nov. 16, won’t exactly be Beatlemania, it will have some akin to it: Fredamania.

Kathy McCabe of Baltimore and part-time resident of Gulf Shores since 2004 is bringing the film she produced, “Good Ol’ Freda,” about Beatles secretary and fan club president Freda Kelly to the Gulf Coast along with the film’s star, good ol’ Freda herself.

Freda Kelly, at 17, became the Beatles secretary and president of the official Beatles Fan Club. She is, longtime friend McCabe says, the only person employed by the Beatles from beginning to end of the madness that was Beatlemania.

Since its release in March of 2013 at the South by Southwest Film Festival, McCabe and Freda have been touring almost nonstop for screenings all over the world in what McCabe affectionately has dubbed Fredamania.

On a beautiful fall afternoon overlooking Raley’s Bayou in Orange Beach, McCabe recounted the story leading up to the film, from her own infatuation with Beatles’ music, to meeting friends in Freda’s circle.

After years of not talking about the Beatles, the whole thing exploded on the eve of the film’s release for Freda, McCabe and Director Ryan White, when “Good Ol’ Freda” became the first independent film to ever receive permission to license four actual Beatles songs from the original masters.

Two screenings will be shown during the 30th Annual Frank Brown Songwriters’ Festival at one of Freda’s favorite places she visited on a trip here a couple years ago, the FloraBama.

After each screening at noon on Nov. 16 and Nov. 17 in the Bama’s main room, Freda will take questions from the audience and sign copies of the DVD. “No matter where she goes, people just love her and admire the way she has conducted her life with such integrity and loyalty to the Beatles and fans,” McCabe said.

“One of the things we always say is we realized early on this would be a movie about Freda not the Beatles because her own life story is so compelling.”

THE BEGINNING

McCabe’s path crossed Freda’s because of her intense love for the Beatles. Freda was the national secretary of the official Beatles Fan Club that was sanctioned by the band and in 1964 McCabe, then 16, sent in a letter asking to be placed on the pen pal request list.

“Back in the days before email and Facebook, people actually sat down and wrote letters to each other and I wanted a pen pal from Liverpool,” she said. “In order to get my pen pal I wrote to Freda as head of the fan club and asked for my name to be put in the Beatles Monthly magazine. Somehow Freda picked my letter out of a pile of thousands of letters. A boy named Robbie Malloy responded. Coincidentally his sister just happened to work for Freda in the fan club.”

“That was the first stroke of luck,” McCabe says with a laugh.

Robbie’s sister was Sandra whose husband Billy Kinsley was a founding member of the Merseybeats, a band that played on the same bill with the Beatles more than any other band at the time.

Good Ol’ Freda-Fredamania

“It’s been more than 50 years now and that pen pal friendship has turned into a four-generation relationship within my family that has been a very important part of our lives,” McCabe says. “Through them I met Freda because they were part of Freda’s circle of friends.”

“At the time I met her Sandra and Billy warned me questions about the Beatles were off limits,” McCabe said.

“Do not bring up the Beatles, that’s the quickest way to put her off on you.”

“So for years I never asked her about the Beatles even though I knew exactly who she was and exactly what she did because every serious Beatle fan knew Freda WAS the real connection between the Beatles and their fans.”

Those family connections and being Freda’s friend for years finally got McCabe to a place where her friend wanted to talk about her exciting past life with the Beatles.

And it happened, of all places, on Ibiza an island in the Mediterranean.

“We both attended a Kinsley family wedding about eight years ago and at

McCabe knew it was going to be a special night.

“She went even though she was terrified. She managed to get up on the stage and answered all the questions directly and honestly. More than 7,000 people gave her a standing ovation afterwards,” McCabe said. “It was just fantastic. You can’t fool Beatles fans. They know when you are the real thing and Freda was the real thing.”

Next thing Freda started talking to me about the Beatles for the first time,” McCabe said. “Sandra, who worked for Freda, Sandra and Billy’s (Kinsley) daughter got married.”

McCabe found herself alone with Freda when the talk turned to the Beatles.

“I guess she had known me long enough and trusted me to a certain level and just started telling me some stories and talking,” McCabe said. “I had a gazillion questions so I gave her a lot more wine!”

“That conversation in Ibiza opened the door a bit,” McCabe said. “She was coming to visit me in Baltimore and I said to her ‘why don’t you do a talk at my house, a private talk.”

McCabe cleared out the living room furniture, put up chairs, invited friends she knew were Beatles fans like herself and charged a minimal fee.

“Freda asked ‘who would possibly be interested in what I have to say?’”

McCabe said. “I said ‘I think you’ll be surprised.’

“Forty or 50 people came and Freda’s talk which was supposed to last an hour ended up lasting four hours.”

That brought on more talks and more talks and finally a spot on the bill of one of the largest Beatle gatherings in the world, The Fest for Beatles fans.

During the first fest appearance,

McCabe has a film background and was working with nephew, Ryan White.

“At the exact moment Freda said ‘I might be willing to do something’ my nephew became free from the film he was working on,” McCabe said. “I pitched the whole thing to him and said I think we can do it in about four months. He agreed to do it, but the four months turned into two and a half years.”

Freda was convinced to go ahead with the project with the birth of her grandson, Niall.

“It started out being a little video for her grandson because she had not talked with her son or her daughter about it that much,” McCabe said.

“Her son later passed away and when her grandson came along, it just changed everything for her.”

She said “I want to put this down on record for my grandson so he’ll know what I did in my youth. I had a lot of fun and I did a lot of cool things.

I want him to know about them and not think I’m this little old gray-haired lady sitting with a shawl who never did anything.”

SECURING THE SONGS

And the final piece of the puzzle, broken in 2013, in a story by the Hollywood Reporter, saying: Ryan White has achieved the nearly impossible: The director got rights to use four original Beatles songs in his documentary “Good Ol’ Freda.”

“That made this film go viral overnight,” McCabe said. “We wanted to get Beatle music for this film because there was no better way to ex-

plain how important Freda’s contribution was to the Beatles, their families and Beatles fans and it had never been done before.”

“I can’t stress enough how huge it is that this little independent film got permission to license four Beatles songs.”

The Freda connection, once again, was a big selling point to securing the rights.

“Because it was Freda, Freda was an Apple employee,” McCabe said.

“We pitched it as this is the woman who worked for the Beatles the entire time they were together, worked for Apple and never sold OUT anybody.”

It was also a thrilling experience for McCabe the Beatle fan.

“We met with Apple and for me as a Beatles fan to walk through the front door and go to a meeting at apple corps ltd, well it was pretty surreal,” she said.

The pair is booked solid between now and the end of the year for screenings in many states in the South, in Mexico City, and the fest for Beatles fans in Los Angeles.

“Really since our South By Southwest premiere a year and a half ago, we’ve been traveling with this film nonstop,” McCabe said. “Freda goes on as many of the trips as she can, that she can get away for. She’s been all over the U.S., Canada, Europe and Asia.”

And on Nov. 16 and Nov. 17 she’ll bring Fredamania to the Flora-Bama.

It was a beautiful summer morning when we left Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and getting a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot.

We have both been very dissatisfied with the last few attempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideration our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother.

The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on time to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beautiful.

Pam, my friend, went first since I was a little chicken after the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, after that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condition her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right.

So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep conditioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of motion, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair.

gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the conditioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condition our hair the same.

Anthony explained that at all times our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out.

Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. After we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and conditioning my hair had ever had.

While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. After shampooing and before conditioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, putting any conditioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more.

After she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bottle. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Well worth a visit!

on fishin’ with Phil Dortch “Whether the weather be cold or whether the weather be hot, we’ll weather the weather, whatever the weather, whether there’s weather or not.” That was my Dad’s favorite saying when the subject of weather came up.

Weather is one of the most important things to check before any fishing trip. Weather most often determines whether or not we can even fish. With modern technology at our fingertips, like smart phones, we have no excuse getting caught in dangerous situations. However, even when out on the water, sudden storms can pop up. We must always be aware of our surroundings.

There are a number of ways to accomplish safety while fishing. Obviously, clouds building in the distance, wind change, or a sudden drop in temperature are all indicators of a possible dangerous situation.

Never take lightning lightly. A smart phone is a valuable piece of equipment.

Download radar apps or web sites to help determine the size, severity and direction the storm is moving.

Some examples are: www.ndbc.noaa.gov (national data buoy center), Navionics ( $10 IPhone app). This app shows tides, current, water depth, gas rigs, obstructions, in addition to waypoints and distance. Hi-Def Radar app is another good one along with the Weather Channel. Crew boats are often willing to check their radar for approaching storms. They monitor channel 16 and 13.

“Red skies at morning, sailors take warning, Red skies at night, sailors delight.” There’s a lot of truth in this old mariner’s proverb.

A ditch bag is probably one of the most important items to have on your boat. It’s like having insurance … you never want to use it but it sure is nice to have in case of an emergency. Get a good waterproof bag that floats. The number one item is a PLB (personal location beacon). I use an ARC ResQlink, but there are a number of good ones on the market. It’s like a small EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radiobeacon).

Here’s a list of suggestions for your ditch bag.

Flare gun, handheld flares, whistle, signal mirror, flashlight, seasick pills, Pepto Bismol, hat, diving mask, knife, rope, first aid kit, sunscreen and Ziploc bags to keep items dry.

November is a great month for catching white trout around the bay gas rigs. Flounder are moving toward the gulf. Live shrimp, bull minnows or baits like Berkley Gulps are good choices around Fort Morgan pier and rocks. Be aware that the state has permanently closed Fort Morgan pier due to safety reasons. Many people have enjoyed the pier for years. Anything we can do to get it reopened will be a benefit to all.

Enjoy everyday on the water. Be safe and help someone when you can. Take a kid fishing. Feel free to share your stories and fishing tips with me. We can all learn from each other.

Crab Canoe Ingredients n 2 cans crab meat (drain liquid), or 1 large 12.5 oz can Chunk Chicken Breast, or 1 lb. fish filet. n Cheddar cheese n Mayonaisse n Green onion n Italian bread n Olive oil n Old Bay Seasoning Recipe If using fish, cook in oven with a little olive oil and Old Bay Seasoning at 350 degrees till flaky.

Mix chosen meat with 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, 1 cup mayo, 1 bunch green onion chopped and green olives. 1 loaf Italian bread.

Cut center out of bread, tear it into chunks and set aside.

Fill cavity with mixture of ingredients.

Bake at 350 deg. For 25 min.

Last 5 min., place bread pieces in oven to crisp.

Sprinkle bacon bits and parsley flakes on top of loaf.

Serve by cutting canoe in slices or as a dip using bread pieces.

‘Who’s on the Island?’

When President Obama was appointing all the czars, one of Mike Reynolds’ team leaders piped up at a meeting, saying, “With all the czars around, I guess you are going to be the Turtle Czar?” Everyone thought it was funny at the time, but the title stuck, and he is now known throughout the Island as the “Turtle Czar.”

Mike was born in Mobile on Dec. 10, 1954. He was the oldest of seven children. His parents, Jan and Albert, met in the Mardi Gras Court in Mobile. His dad was his mom’s knight on the Court, and as it turned out, in real life also.

They lived in West Mobile in Jackson Heights. Mike attended Catholic schools in Corpus Christi, Texas, and then went to McGill. His family was close, due partly to the fact that they also were big into hunting and fishing, and did things together. It seemed they were always on, or near, the water — such as in a duck blind, on a boat or near the water up in a deer stand.

Mike’s family still owns a little strip of land on the west side of Grand Bay up in the Delta. They had a hunting camp there that was full of memories. As a family, they spent many a weekend there up until Hurricane Camille came thru in 1969 and completely blew it away.

He also spent many summers at Point Clear. At 10 he was driving a boat. At age 12 he took their boat, powered by a 20-horsepower Mercury outboard, along with some of his brothers and sisters, and they often went out to Middle Bay Lighthouse. The stilted structure had a ladder to get up in the lighthouse. They’d climb up on it, then jump off into the water.

Being fearless as children, he still remembers catching fish, dangling them in the water off the back of the boat, and when the bull MARK sharks came to get their free lunch, Mike and his brothers would jump into the water from ROBINSON the lighthouse deck on top of the sharks which would totally scare them and they’d scatter. He remembers how they dared each other to “bomb the sharks.”

Summers with family was fishing together, and fall and winter they bonded while hunting dove and deer. It was a wonderful time in his life growing up with close family ties.

Mike was also into scouting. He earned his Eagle Scout recognition, and later in life when his sons were scouting age, he became scoutmaster of the same troop that had molded his ideals, and he helped guide his children to the beliefs of the Scouts.

Mike met his wife Prissy while they were in high school.

At the time they met she was dating a friend of his and he was dating a friend of hers. They became good friends. As their relationships to others ended, the relationship of Mike and Prissy grew. They just sort of hung out together and next thing they knew, they were dating.

After graduation, Mike went to work for GM&O railroad (stayed with them for 10 years) up in Jackson, Tenn., and Prissy stayed in Mobile and worked for Sears. Driving down to Mobile every weekend to see her got old.

One warm afternoon in May 1974, while enjoying the beach in a then nearly deserted Gulf Shores while sitting on a dune, Mike just said to Prissy, “Why don’t we get married?”

To which she said, “Why not?”

Mike always had an interest in mechanics and had many family ties to the railroad. (His mother’s father had worked for the railroad, and his wife’s father worked for railroad). Working for GM&O seemed like the natural thing to do.

Mike and Prissy now have three grown children that they are very proud of. One son, Michael, is in Orlando and is the IT manager for Rosen Resorts; their daughter, Jennifer, is working in Mobile for CPSI; and their youngest son, Matt, is recently married to Lauren, and they both work at LuLu’s.

In the 70s, Mike and Prissy moved back to Mobile.

They bought a Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Parlor, and before opening it up, went to Ice Cream school in Glendale, Calif. They ran an ice cream store together in Mobile. He still was putting in 40 hours a week at the railroad, and 40 hours in their store. While owning the ice cream shop, Prissy was pregnant with their daughter. He still remembers her loving chocolate brownie ice cream, and Colonial Dixie hamburgers.

He finally realized he just had taken on too much. They sold the ice cream store, and moved from Chickasaw to be closer to Mobile. Finally, he quit the railroad and went to college (in 1984) at South Alabama. He stayed three years doing really well, but needed to work so he quit school. He worked selling software and sold yellow page advertising before buying a printing company in Mobile. He also worked for Auto Zone. His managerial and mechanical experience made him an asset wherever he went.

Finally, he started a little company called Southern American, doing marketing and advertising. (He also got into real estate with Reality South). One of his clients was an auctioneer-

ing company. The man that owned the company owned the house Mike now lives in on West Beach. He decided to sell it 13 years ago, and Mike bought it. So he now lives a few blocks from where he proposed to his wife more than 40 years ago.

Before moving to this area, he learned the skills of auctioneering, and the intricacies of real estate selling. He got his real estate brokerage license to sell in both Alabama and Florida. In 2001 he got his pilot license and still loves to fly.

He involved himself with the Civil Air Patrol and speaks very highly of the organization.

The first summer after moving to Gulf Shores he happened upon a turtle nest while walking on the beach. It was roped off, but there was a sign with a phone number on it. He called it and talked to a lady in Bon Secour and he wanted to volunteer. At that time only the interns from the wildlife center were allowed to deal specifically with the turtles.

At that time there were a few volunteers walking the beach now and then, but if they found a nest they had to call Bon Secour and the intern would have to drive down, when they had time, try to find it and mark it.

Mike decided there was a better way. He applied for a Federal permit and got it. I asked him why, and he explained that ever since he was little, he had a desire to be a marine biologist. He was involved with the turtles and could make a difference.

The turtle nesting season is from May 1 to Oct. 31. Mike spends at least 20 to 30 hours a week involved with the sea turtles. He says he has some “great team leaders” and some wonderful dedicated volunteers. When the oil spill came along, they knew what to do and what needed to be done.

They were skilled at finding the nests and knew what had to be done to move the nests to get them out of harm’s way. They were organized and accomplished.

Each nest of eggs found was dug up, marked as to the depth of the eggs, where the top of the egg was and marked for its compass orientation. They were then loaded on a temperature controlled FedEx truck and taken directly to a new location near Cape Canaveral. This was overseen by US Fisheries and Wildlife (oversight of the nests on the beach), and NOAA (oversight of the turtles in the water).

The turtles born would normally swim out to the floating seaweed where they find protection and nutrition. Unfortunately at that time, the seaweed also acted like giant sponges for the oil. The turtles had to be moved from local beaches to keep them from the oil, which would have killed them.

I asked how they learned to move the eggs. He told me that about 45 years ago a species of turtle was being destroyed along the coast of Mexico by animal and human predators. To prevent extinction, the Americans went after the nests, relocated them to the Texas coast, and saved the species.

“Checking the documentation of what took place moving them from Mexico to Texas, we learned how to move them from here to Florida,” Mike said.

Mike, who was selling beach real estate at the time, was basically out of business then. Who wanted to buy an oily beachfront property? With nothing to do, and no money coming in, he dove into the turtle project, and devoted most all his time to the rescue of the giant sea turtle eggs. The project became SHARE THE BEACH and it presently has 450 volunteers actively involved with Mike as the organization’s leader.

The Alabama beach is divided up into eight sections with eight team leaders. The team leaders are trained on making up walking schedules (searching for nests each morning), how to

mark the nests and the proper protocol for dealing with the turtles. Mike says he’s proud of his little army of dedicated workers. A labor of love.

Mike figures at least 15,000 man-hours a season are donated to SHARE THE BEACH. It’s a 25-year project (we’re halfway through) to where it takes 25 years for the baby turtle to mature to where it will return to the same beach where it was born and will lay her own eggs.

The cycle of the turtles is they leave here and follow the Gulf Stream, then to the North Atlantic current to the Sargasso Sea. It takes the turtles about two years to get there. That’s where they grow up. It’s bounded by currents with giant beds of seaweed. They then ride the currents back to the Gulf and eventually to our beaches to lay more eggs and continue the life cycle Mike’s attitude is that he sees what needs to get done and does his best to get them done. He’s not political and gets frustrated by a project held up due to people with their own political agendas. Mike is a motivational speaker and also gives lectures on the turtles and SHARE THE BEACH. He talks to the schoolchildren, the snowbird groups, civic organizations, the Sea Lab and anywhere that will help to possibly impact environmental conservation. He talks on volunteerism and how to lead.

Mike says as a child he was shy, had stage fright and stuttered. Now he’s a great speaker who will definitely hold one’s attention.

He says “Life is what it is, and here I am.” Mike did say that you can request a “turtle license plate” from the DMV, and part of the money goes toward the SHARE THE BEACH project.

We on the Island are truly blessed to have a family like Mike and Prissy living here. He’s taken on a massive project and has motivated the entire community to want to be involved. We surely live where there is a small town with a big beach and Mike helps to make it an even better place to live.

I’m glad to be able to say he’s a friend.

Kayak and Fishing Classes

City of Orange Beach Wind and Water Learning Center 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. $70; includes all equipment (kayaks, paddles, rod/reel,

tackle, PFD) This course will focus on kayak fishing techniques and skills such as maneuvering in a fishing kayak, using and detaching an anchor trolley, casting techniques specific to being on a kayak and the importance of staying visible. Participants will also be taken on a short paddling excursion with the hope of reeling in a fish or two. All participants must be 14 years or older and it’s recommended that those participating have prior basic kayaking/paddling experience.

The festival is a perennial favorite for music lovers eager to hear songwriters not only perform but also discuss how and why they wrote some of the world’s greatest hits.

Veterans Day events Veterans Day Spaghetti Dinner and Service When: Wednesday, Nov. 5; 6 p.m.

Where: Elks Lodge, 430 State Street, Fort Morgan A service honoring all Veterans. A spaghetti dinner will be served at 6 p.m. followed by the service at 7:30 p.m.

This event is open to the public. RSVP at 970-867-6711.

To give thanks to the many local veterans in the Gulf Shores area, American Legion Post 44 in Gulf Shores will have a special observance to honor those who served.

After the observance, the venue will serve lunch from 11:30 to 2 p.m. Picnic favorites such as fried chicken, potato salad, baked beans and cole slaw will be served.

There are a limited number of meals, but members of the American Legion Post will serve until all of the food is served out.Veterans eat for free, but other participants are suggested to donate $6 per lunch.

Roger and Elaine Beasley will perform live patriotic music at the event. Money raised will be donated to Operation Comfort Warrior, a national American Legion program, to provide items for the wounded men and women serving.

The 2014 Foley Veteran’s Day Parade will be held on Monday, November 11 at Max Griffin Park in Foley. Units will form up beginning at 9:30 a.m. The parade will follow its standard route and will end at Max Griffin Park for Veterans’ Day ceremonies at 11:00 a.m. the public is invited and welcome to join the City of Foley and American Legion Post 99 to help observe this event.

Alabama’s State Parks System is celebrating 75 years of recreation, preservation and family fun.

As part of this year’s celebration, Gulf State Park is working to enable more veterans to enjoy the park, by giving park visitors an opportunity to support veterans.

The park’s “Partner’s Pave the Way” campaign was designed to educate the public and the tax payers of the state to better understand how without their patronage, the park system could not exist. Park patrons contribute 100 percent of the annual operation funds utilized within the 22 state parks. While we also get occasional support from the state’s General Fund for maintenance and renovation projects, park customers are contributing the primary funds utilized each year to run and operate our 22 state parks.

Gulf State Park is taking $1 donations to pay for veterans’ entrance to the pier for fishing and sightseeing.

In the few weeks since the program began, 99 veterans have been able to experience the beaches of Gulf State Park, and park guests raised over $600 in only six weeks.

Since the program has exceeded the original goal of $500, the park has set a new goal of $1,500 by Veterans Day on Nov. 11.

The Gulf Coast Arts Alliance, located in the beautiful Waterway Village of Gulf Shores, will celebrate a Holiday Open House. The public is invited to come by, enjoy holiday refreshments and browse the original creations of all GCAA participating artists.

The focus of local art will be on items appropriate for Christmas gifts.

In addition to the Gallery's paintings, pottery and wood crafts, the Gallery Gift Shop will include beautiful hand made jewelry, creative wall hangings, greeting cards, GCAA T-shirts and many other gift items.

There will be a drawing for many original art items including paintings, glass art, pottery, jewelry and carved

wood. The public is invited to come by now to register. Registration for these items is ongoing and will end on Nov. 8, the day of the open house, at 4 p.m.

Frequently Asked Questions 1) Tents (no larger than a 10x10 ft.) are allowed on the beach, but they have to be placed behind (North of) the designated sign marker post and should be removed before night.

Tents cannot be placed between the sign post and the Gulf of Mexico. This is for designated emergency and safety access.

2) Pets are not allowed on the beach on the Gulf of Mexico or surrounding islands (Robinson, Bird, Walker). However they are allowed at the designated city Dog Park on Canal Rd. (Hwy 180) next to Sportsman Marina. All dogs should remain on a leash within the city limits.

3) Glass in any form (bottle, cup, container, etc.) is strictly prohibited on our beaches and islands.

4) A yellow or green flag posted along gulf beaches means to use caution while swimming in the gulf waters and is permitted.

A red flag means danger and one should not swim in the waters.

Double red flags mean that swimming in the waters is prohibited by law.

Purple means WARNING! A jellyfish or other marine threat.

5) All trails and parks are free and open from daylight to dusk 7 days a week.

6) Fires or flames are strictly prohibited on the beach. This includes grills, tiki-torches, lanterns, open fire pits, candles, fireworks, etc.

7) Jet skis, boats, and any other motorized vessels, are prohibited from launching along the gulf front beaches.

eet Kathleen Baskin, the smiling chef behind the scenes of every function for Katy’s Catering.

She first opened Katy’s BBQ, which she sold in 2004. Now Kathleen devotes her time to catering beach weddings, local functions and lending encouragement to new entrepreneurs.

She is famous for her pecan smoked pulled pork, homemade

sauce, fried green tomatoes and hummingbird layer cake.

“Thanksgiving Feast are prepared every year for people who would rather for whatever reason leave the

cooking to me,” said Baskin. “They know I’ll devote special moments of love in each dinner.” Katy's also fries and smokes turkeys. (Preordered only)

Recipes from Katy’s Catering Sweet Potato Salad Ingredients n 2 ½ cups fresh washed sweet potatoes cut into slices n Olive oil n Chipotle seasoning n ¼ cup purple onion n ¼ cup pueblo pepper n 1 tablespoon fresh ginger n ½ cup yellow raisins n ½ cup roasted pecans n Two oranges n Salt and pepper to taste Preparation Put potatoes in a bowl and coat with olive oil.

Add chipotle seasoning and a little salt.

Put on pan and roast in oven to bring out the sweetness until tender.

Chop ¼ cup purple onion, ¼ cup fresh pueblo pepper, 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger, zest of two oranges, juice from two oranges, ½ cup yellow raisins, ½ cup chopped roasted pecans.

Toss with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, salt and pepper to taste. Let rest 30 minutes for the flavors to blend. *This recipe is good for fall with our sweet potatoes from the farm. Serve with your favorite pork chops or chicken dish. Great for sharing with friends at picnics or covered dish.

Ingredients n Young turkey (thawed) n Olive oil n Flour n Salt

Preparation Put a young turkey in the ice chest, add cold ice water and a box of salt. Brine overnight. Do this if you are smoking, frying or baking your turkey.

To bake my turkey after the brine, I pan it, brush it with olive oil and sift flour over the breast and legs.

Bake at 175 degrees until golden brown. A good rule of thumb is if the breast bone is extruding and the skin is brown, it’s done.

Take turkey out of the oven and let rest. Cover with foil and chill.

Best sliced cold and then reheated with broth in the oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Of course it takes time and patience to roast a turkey. I’d allow overnight brine and three hours roasting time. The flavor is well worth it. The flour makes a crust to seal in the natural juices. Always start with a name brand fresh turkey.
