With fall finally upon us, some say it’s the best time to visit the beach.

Fall means shorter restaurant waits, a cooler ocean breeze and of course, events like the National Shrimp Festival. Though the Shrimp Festival attracts thousands to our beaches each year, it’s not the only October happening on the Gulf Coast. The addition of new businesses, such as Another Broken Egg Cafe, and the excitement of weekend football tailgates at the Hangout, keep the beach entertaining during these fall months.

Annual Shrimp Festival brings thousands to the shore

I

t's that time of year for the beach's famous National Shrimp Festival. Seafood lovers from all over travel to the shores of the Gulf to sample shrimp prepared any way you want it.

The event, presented by Zatarain's, is during the second full weekend October each year and attracts approximately 250,000 shrimp patrons to the area.

More than 300 vendors will be offering arts and crafts, fine art and of course, food.

An assortment of vendors will line the festival and serve up fried shrimp, shrimp kabobs, grilled shrimp and other delicious preparations. A variety of festival favorites will also be sold at the event.

Local artists will showcase their talent under a series of tents that will be lining and in the heart of the festival.

Music will be continuously provided daily on two stages throughout the festival.

Shrimp Festival Idol will take place on Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon. The contestants, representing each of our Baldwin County High Schools will compete for scholarships for themselves as well as matching funds for their schools.

As for the kids, there will be Children’s Activity Village where children can create their own art and participate in other fun-filled activities.

There will also be a family-friendly sand sculpture contest on Saturday at 11 a.m. on the west end of the public beach. Prizes include cash and trophies.

By Theresa Corbin Contributing writer Fall is a feast of the senses. The sight of leaves changing colors, the smell and taste of pumpkin spices in every coffee shop and the feel of a crisp cool air evoke the fall feeling.

In the Southeast where summer is long, humid and hot; fall comes with relief of crisp, cool air that often leaves too quickly. So why not make the most out of fall by bringing the sights, smell and feeling into the home? Here are some inexpensive and easy ways to reflect fall in your home.

Welcome the season with a wreath on the door

Many department and craft stores boast pricey wreaths for any season, but you don’t need to shell out a lot of cash for a festive wreath. You can make one at home with two simple and common household items.

You will need is one wire hanger and a few scraps of fabric in fall colors. Take the wire hanger and form it into a circle. This doesn’t need to be a perfect geometric circle., it just needs to resemble a circular shape, as the wire will not show in the finished product.

Collect old fabric items from around the house that are in fall colors. Perhaps that orange shirt you wore last year is torn? Maybe you can repurpose old baby clothes in fall colors and make the wreath into a keepsake? Any texture cloth in an autumnal color will do.

Once you have collected the fabric, cut scraps of material into 7-inch x 1-inch pieces. Tie the scraps, varying colors, around the wire and bunch them together until the wreath is full.

Tie a ribbon in a bow to the wire frame and hang it on the door to welcome the fall.

Bringing the scent of fall into the home

The smell of apple cider, pumpkin pie and cinnamon strudel has many running to the mall at the beginning of fall for expensive candles. Forgo the expensive autumn scented wax this year and make your own fall fragrance that will waft throughout the home.

All you need is to mix a few cinnamon sticks, apple slices or peels and orange peels in a pot with water. Simmer on low until the aromas are released and fill your home.

Adding fall texture to the home

Sweater weather is something to be celebrated in the south. It doesn’t stay around for very long, but when it comes around the excitement has many out shopping for comfy cable knit tops.

Most of these sweaters we purchase won’t be used as much as we like, but the texture evokes feelings of snuggling up to a fire with a good cup of hot cocoa.

This texture can be used when decorating to evoke all those same warm feelings.

Find a sweater that is no longer in use and cut the sleeves to fit over a vase for autumnal arraignments. You can even fit the sleeve over a simple candle holder to accentuate it. Try sewing the body of an old sweater to fit a wide or round vase. Adding texture to vases of flower arrangements is a great look for fall decorating.

Autumn rolls around for a limited time once a year. Don’t spend big bucks decorating, but don’t let the decorating fever pass you buy either. Listen to these crafty tips to bring fall sensations into your home at an affordable price.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit!

It was a beautiful summer morning when we left Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and getting a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot.

We have both been very dissatisfied with the last few attempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideration our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother.

The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on time to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beautiful.

Pam, my friend, went first since I was a little chicken after the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, after that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condition her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right.

So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep conditioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of motion, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair.

Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer

gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the conditioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condition our hair the same.

Anthony explained that at all times our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out.

Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. After we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and conditioning my hair had ever had.

While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. After shampooing and before conditioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, putting any conditioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more.

After she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bottle. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

on fishin’ with Phil Dortch Did you see that? A 10 to 12-foot Gulf Sturgeon swam under our boat. I had never seen one and it looked like a prehistoric monster.

Earlier that same day, we saw a huge sea turtle south of Dauphin Island. His head was the size of a volleyball.

Fishing was horrible that day, but it’s not all about catching fish. It’s about the opportunity to enjoy God’s creation, getting home safely and catching fish is always a bonus to a great day. Just another day at the office.

Red fish

Bull Reds on Dixey Bar are still good in October. In my September article, we discussed pogies and croakers as being great bait you can catch with a cast net. The easiest way to find croakers is to is to look for pelicans diving. Navy Cove, St. Andrews Bay or the south side of Dauphin Island near Sand Island is usually a good place to start. Look for a little flip or splash in the water, which reveals their location. If neither of those methods work, watch your fish finder. Get up current, motor off and drift towards them. Standing at the front of the boat seems to work best for me. When all else fails, throw the net randomly until you find some. Often croaker or other small fish will be caught, which all make good red fish bait.

White trout

White trout should be plentiful this time of year, you can see schools of them on your fish finder. Use Berkley Gulps on ¼ inch jig heads, cut bait or shrimp. If you’re fishing an area with oyster shells or other snags, try using a slip cork to keep your bait just above the bottom.

You can anchor, tie up to a rig or get up current and drift.

Most Bay rigs and small platforms are usually productive.

White trout are best eaten fresh, but freezing them is acceptable when vacuum sealed. White trout filets are an excellent addition to seafood gumbo. Another option is to make fish cakes.

Recipe for white trout fish cakes

n Cook fish covered in oven at 350 with a small amount of olive oil n Season with Old Bay or your favorite seasoning n Saute onion, bell pepper, garlic and green onion n Add one or two eggs and cracker meal or Italian style bread crumbs n Mix all ingredients and mixture should be a consistency to make a patty n Cook in non stick skillet in a little olive oil till brown on both sides Option: Before cooking, freeze, vacuum seal, cook later.

Cobia fishing is usually thought of as a spring event, but they migrate a little farther offshore in the fall. Last year, we caught 16 cobia and 12 small Mahi Mahi while fishing around ships anchored past the farewell buoy.

The cobia were caught fishing on the bottom using live bait. The Mahi Mahi were caught using squid. Remember to keep a fishing journal for future reference.

Roe mullet

October is a great time to catch roe mullet with a cast net on area piers, but be mindful of quota limits. Fresh cooked fried mullet is a southern delicacy. Mullet is also delicious smoked with skin on. When finished, vacuum seal and put in freezer to enjoy all winter. You can simply heat them in a microwave.

In case you encounter those nasty black biting flies, try this homemade repellent. n 1/3 cup water n 2/3 cup vinegar n 2/3 cup Dawn Mix and put in spray bottle and zap the little pest.

They drop like a rock.

‘Who’s on the Island?’

We met upstairs on the second level of DeSoto’s where Shrimp Festival posters decorated the walls. This was and is still is one of my favorite places to eat. It’s a super restaurant where the wait staff makes you feel at home, and where your favorite meal ordered today will still be your favorite meal when you return to order it again be it a week, a month, or a year from now. The reason is because of Chris and Rosemary Steele, and their orchestrated team working so beautifully together.

Rosemary Steele was born in Spokane, Washington. Her dad was an engineer with Schlumberger, and her mom was a teacher. Rosemary’s dad was transferred to Mobile and the family was introduced to Gulf Shores and its beautiful beaches. They vacationed here whenever possible.

Rosemary grew up in Gulf Shores attending Gulf Shores Middle School, then graduated from Foley High School.

Her freshman college year she went to Faulkner State in Gulf Shores, studying Business, as well as Apparel Merchandising and Design Management. During her summers in high school, she worked at a clothing store underneath the Perdido Pass Restaurant and she met her husband, Chris.

Before getting married, Rosemary and Chris attended Auburn University to complete their degrees. With a year left in school, in 1996, they came home during a break, and got married in one of the biggest weddings in Gulf Shores.

After college, they moved to Atlanta, Georgia where Rosemary worked for Vanity Fair. While in Atlanta, their daughter Madison was born.

in Gulf Shores. They wanted to be part of a community [“a small town with a big beach”].

They wanted to live in a place where people MARK looked out and cared about each other.

Chris had worked every summer at the Per- ROBINSON dido Pass restaurant where his grandfather took him under his wing and taught him everything he knew about the food end, the business end, the bar end and the promotion end of restaurants, as well as secrets of managing a large staff. He learned about cooking and what he needed to know about purchasing food and making things work right with a restaurant.

Chris took a job as one of the managers at The Beach Club and helped get it opened and established as a first class place to eat. The couple had an opportunity to purchase DeSoto’s in April 2000.

At the time, Rosemary was pregnant with her second child and had clothing stores. She sold out her share and joined Chris in running DeSoto’s, Smokey Mac’s barbeque and the Pizza Restaurant buildings.

In 2002 they opened Rafters, which is now owned and operated by Chris’s brother and his wife. In 2004, Rafters was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan, and there was extensive damage to DeSoto’s.

Hurricane Ivan was a learning experience. She and Chris had only been in business four years when it smashed the Alabama coast.

They rebuilt and then were delayed from opening because of a permit mess. They didn’t want to lay off their staff, so they put them to work cleaning up and clearing out the building.

Finally they reopened. It was busy beyond expectations because of all the repair crews working in the area.

Rosemary and Chris love the Island. The Steele’s sponsor the school sports teams with uniforms and other needs. Rosemary was president of the Junior Women’s club, a chairperson in the “Taste of the Tropics” fundraiser, and was a founding member of the Maidens and Pink Stiletto Mardi Gras Krew.

“Our area is growing so fast and it’s nice, but I hope we never lose that community feeling, “Rosemary said. “What I miss from growing up (years) here is a real boardwalk where you can buy ice cream, snacks and souvenirs. It was where you went on amusement rides. It was where you met your friends.”

The beauty of the restaurant is the owners of it. They take care of their customers. They treat and consider the staff like they are family. Some employees have been there since it opened, and all are loved. When you walk in, you’re recognized, and when you leave you’re full, happy and you look forward to returning.

The Steele’s are part of the Island. They are a part of its history, and its traditions. They are friendly, beautiful, generous people that make the Island what it is. We ON THE ISLAND are blessed to have them as part of our community and I am blessed to be able to call them friends.

Frequently Asked Questions 1) Tents (no larger than a 10x10 ft.) are allowed on the beach, but they have to be placed behind (North of) the designated sign marker post and should be removed before night.

Tents cannot be placed between the sign post and the Gulf of Mexico. This is for designated emergency and safety access.

2) Pets are not allowed on the beach on the Gulf of Mexico or surrounding islands (Robinson, Bird, Walker). However they are allowed at the designated city Dog Park on Canal Rd. (Hwy 180) next to Sportsman Marina. All dogs should remain on a leash within the city limits.

3) Glass in any form (bottle, cup, container, etc.) is strictly prohibited on our beaches and islands.

4) A yellow or green flag posted along gulf beaches means to use caution while swimming in the gulf waters and is permitted.

A red flag means danger and one should not swim in the waters.

Double red flags mean that swimming in the waters is prohibited by law.

Purple means WARNING! A jellyfish or other marine threat.

5) All trails and parks are free and open from daylight to dusk 7 days a week.

6) Fires or flames are strictly prohibited on the beach. This includes grills, tiki-torches, lanterns, open fire pits, candles, fireworks, etc.

7) Jet skis, boats, and any other motorized vessels, are prohibited from launching along the gulf front beaches.

Get ready for the Shrimp Festival with these recipes With October being the month of the National Shrimp Festival, the coast can't seem to get enough of it's favorite seafood. Try these original shrimp recipes at home to satisfy your tastebuds!

Drunken Spicy Gulf Shrimp Ingredients n 1/2 pound of 26-30 fresh gulf shrimp n 1/4 cup of beer n 2 tablespoons butter n 2 tablespoons Wild Bill’s Wing Sauce n 1 teaspoon black pepper n 1 teaspoon oregano n 1/8 teaspoon cajun seasoning n 2 garlic cloves minced n 1 teaspoon olive oil Preparation Combine Wild Bill’s, black pepper, oregano, cayenne pepper and cajun seasoning in a small bowl and set aside.

On high heat, saute garlic in butter until slightly brown.

Add ingredients from bowl and stir for 30 seconds.

Add shrimp and stir until shrimp are pink and done.

Pour in beer and simmer for one minute.

Barbequed Royal Red Shrimp Ingredients n 2 1/2 pound head on royal red shrimp n 1 cup butter n 3/4 cup Worcestershire sauce n 3/4 cup lemon juice n 6 green onions chopped n 2 teaspoons black pepper n 1 tablespoon Wild Bill’s Wing Sauce n Salt if desired Preparation Heat butter until melted.

Stir in Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, lemon juice, green onions , garlic and Wild Bill’s.

Add shrimp and saute until fully cooked.

Serve with french bread.
