In the winter months the beach is less crowded and it is a nice, lazy kind of year, according to Joanie Flynn, vice president of marketing for Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau.

ith winter in full bloom, January begins to lure in Snowbirds and keep the winter residents happy on the Coast. Though the beach isn't as crowded as it's summertime norm, the Gulf Coast continues to offer a variety of entertainment, activities and fun in the sun that the area has always known.

“This area of people really appreciates all the snowbirds to come down to our area and make it possible for some of our businesses to stay open,” she said. “It's just a real nice kind of lazy time of year, but a time where you really have time to talk to people and get to know each other. It's one of my favorite times of the year.”

Organizations like snowbird clubs allow visitors from the north to flock together. State-specific clubs allow winter visitors to engage in activities like bridge clubs, weekly potlucks, breakfasts and golfing at the beautiful courses on the Coast. For more information, pick up a copy of 'Winter Wanderings', a newsletter dedicated to Snowbirds, at the Gulf Shores or Orange Beach Welcome Center.

The Adult Activity Center offers daily classes from line dancing to Mexican train dominoes to entertain winter residents.

“We have cards, dominoes and games during the week,” Carolyn Vines, coordinator for the Orange Beach Adult Activity Center said. “We also have craft classes available, and I'm working on getting a photography class.”

Patricia Quinney, a native of Demopolis, has been traveling with her family to the Gulf Coast for more than 50 years.

“One of my favorite things about the area, besides shopping and eating out, is all of the original live music,” Quinney said.

Quinney and her family, like most true beach lovers, continue to travel to the beach during the winter, despite

the colder temperatures.

“We still visit because it's a lot less crowded and only a three-and-a half-hour drive for us to the beautiful beaches,” she said.

The Wharf also hosts events, restaurant specials and live music throughout the winter.

“The Wharf is always coming up with new events and attractions to get people and families to The Wharf,” Jade Jewell, special events coordinator for The Wharf, said. “The restaurants and stores will have specials rates and offers for snowbirds. We are updating weekly with new specials, offers, events and activities.”

ith the New Year upon us, many are taking stock of where they are and where they want to be, finding new resolve to change their life for the better. The New Year resolution is nothing new.

Many of us make big plans for goals we hope to accomplish. And by February, many of us have settled back into our old habits that lead us to the original resolution.

It is no secret that the promise most Americans make to themselves at the New Year is to lose weight.

And sadly this resolution to get healthy is also No. 1 on the list of commonly broken resolutions. It’s simple physics. Objects at rest stay at rest and objects in motion stay in motion.

So how do we find the motivation to get and stay in motion? How can we find the resolve to stick with the resolution to stay healthy? Resident and believer in staying active, Edwin Wirgowski, says his motivation for staying active for more than 50 years is to lengthen his life. “I try to keep in shape,” Wirgowski says. “I am 73 years old, so I’ve got to do everything I can to get a few more years.” And Wirgowski is right in his thinking.

Research has shown time and time again that getting and staying active can increase life expectancy.

In his 70s, Wirgowski rides a bicycle, does free weights, uses exercise machines and swims his way to longevity at Bodenhamer Recreational Center in Gulf Shores. And he is not alone. Many health conscious Gulf Shores residents make the time to add activity into their lives at the

Bodenhamer Rec Center.

Adding a social component to getting healthy is a great way to jump start a resolution. And joining a recreational center like Bodenhamer is a great option. Bodenhamer Recreational Center offers a huge variety of classes to its members, making it not only a place to get and stay healthy, but also a place to get social.

“We offer any type of water or fitness aerobics class that you can imagine,” says Nicole Ard, manager of Bodenhamer Recreational Center.

“We try to stay state of the art with our equipment, and so we offer a variety of those types of programs. And in the New Year we offer wellness classes, health and wellness fairs, anything to kind of keep people in the loop about how to be healthier and happier and more fit in their lives.”

Ard speculates that the success of the center is largely because of a combination of staff and facility. Ard says, “[We have] nice people at the front desk to greet people as they come in. And we have a beautiful facility that offers something for everyone.”

Something for everyone is not an overstatement at Bodenhamer Rec Center. It offers complimentary coffee and a filtered water station, complimentary towel service, floor and water aerobics classes, full service fitness room, game area, indoor heated pool with lap lanes, men's and women's dry sauna, men's/women's and boy's/girl's locker rooms, outdoor wading pool, regulation size gymnasium, and much more to members of all ages.

Bodenhamer also participates in the SilverSneakers program, for older members who are enrolled in Medicare health plans and Medicare Supplement carriers. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and getting a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot.

We have both been very dissatisfied with the last few attempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideration our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother.

The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on time to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beautiful.

Pam, my friend, went first since I was a little chicken after the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, after that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condition her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right.

So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep conditioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of motion, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair.

gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the conditioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condition our hair the same.

Anthony explained that at all times our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out.

Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. After we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and conditioning my hair had ever had.

While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. After shampooing and before conditioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, putting any conditioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself.

Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more.

After she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works!

Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bottle. Anyway our cuts cost us $40 each, best money we ever spent and yes we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Even January is a good month for fishing December is gone and for most it’s back to the grind. Hope you all had a great Christmas and new year.

One good thing is the specks are still in the rivers staying warm and getting real hungry. They do move slow and their bite is light, but they are there. I use a slip singer and a swivel with a #4 Kahle hook at the end with live shrimp.

I drift with the wind or current and try to keep my bait on the bottom. If I get a bump, I open the bail and hold my line in my hand and wait for the speck to swallow. After you set the hook, the speck comes alive and becomes the fighting fish that you catch during the summer months.

If January gets warm or the rain is heavy, the fish may move to the deeper water at the lower end of the creeks and rivers. It’s not too difficult to limit out on specks if there’s no one around to spook the fish. If you don’t find any specks and it’s sunny, then move to a little shallower water and locate some structure and again fish slow for redfish.

Smaller reds are on the rivers year round and are just as hungry as the specks.

If you have live shrimp that’s great. If not, then try gulp baits under a cork.

There’s no need to pop it but do move it some so the red can locate it. Redfish, as I’m sure you already know, are great fighting fish and taste great as well. The structure may be a sea wall or bulkhead or stumps and limbs on the bottom. All of those spots are good spots to pick up a 16-inch-plus redfish.

If the wind allows you to move to the lighthouse outside the pass at Fort Morgan, you can still pick up some great whiting and/or white trout action without the sharks to steal your fish, bait or hooks.

If you fish the Lower Delta be sure to travel up the Tensaw until you see Crab Creek on the left.

Turn on the Crab Creek and go to the end. You should be on the Raft River then. Turn left and look to the right. There’s some really deep water there and it will hold specks when nothing else will.

If you go north on the Raft River, you’ll find a shallow bay. I’ve caught specks at the lower edge of that bay and in the Raft River, going northeast from that bay. I know that there are untold numbers of spots on the rivers in the Delta, so if you try all of these spots, then just move from river to creek to river and watch your bottom machine for deeper water and/or fish. If you find a deep spot on any of these shallow creeks or rivers, then that’s the deepest spot around there, so it may hold some fish. It never hurts to fish it. If it’s flat (no wind), then look for the tails of redfish. They’re looking for lunch. Just go slow and quiet, as they spook very easy in shallow water.

If you do go south to the lighthouse, be sure to drift or anchor on the Dixie Bar. Redfish hunt by sight and smell, so if you drop a smelly piece of cut bait, the reds will pick up the chum line and move to your bait.

These guys run up to 30 pounds, so your gear should be of the proper size. Always release these larger redfish if you can. The limit is one per person, but they are the future of Alabama’s redfish population.

All in all, January can be a great month on the water.

Fewer boats allow for less noise on the spots and the fish aren’t as spooked as they are during the summer months. As always, be careful on the water and obey the laws. During the warm months, if your boat quits, you may have to spend the night on the bank. You’ll just have to deal with snakes, gators and bugs. But if you spend the night during the winter, you have to deal with Jack Frost. I’d rather fight the snakes.

Frequently Asked Questions 1) Tents (no larger than a 10x10 ft.) are allowed on the beach, but they have to be placed behind (North of) the designated sign marker post and should be removed before night.

Tents cannot be placed between the sign post and the Gulf of Mexico. This is for designated emergency and safety access.

2) Pets are not allowed on the beach on the Gulf of Mexico or surrounding islands (Robinson, Bird, Walker). However they are allowed at the designated city Dog Park on Canal Rd. (Hwy 180) next to Sportsman Marina. All dogs should remain on a leash within the city limits.

3) Glass in any form (bottle, cup, container, etc.) is strictly prohibited on our beaches and islands.

4) A yellow or green flag posted along gulf beaches means to use caution while swimming in the gulf waters and is permitted.

A red flag means danger and one should not swim in the waters.

Double red flags mean that swimming in the waters is prohibited by law.

Purple means WARNING! A jellyfish or other marine threat.

5) All trails and parks are free and open from daylight to dusk 7 days a week.

6) Fires or flames are strictly prohibited on the beach. This includes grills, tiki-torches, lanterns, open fire pits, candles, fireworks, etc.

7) Jet skis, boats, and any other motorized vessels, are prohibited from launching along the gulf front beaches.

arm winds, salt water and sugar-white sands beckon visitors from across the U.S. and beyond to the beaches of lower Alabama. Fresh seafood and the casual atmosphere certainly account for part of the appeal, but Orange Beach also offers state-of-the-art cultural assets to satisfy the varied tastes of both residents and guests.

The Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach is located in the city’s first hotel — built in 1923 and nestled on Wolf Bay, the hotel was only accessible by water, as Canal Road wasn’t completed until the early 1950s. The center, previously managed by Friends of the Arts nonprofit group, became an Orange Beach city facility in 2013.

The city continues to work with the Friends of the Arts to help make the center a well-rounded oasis for the arts. The center’s main gallery features a new exhibit every six weeks, while other gallery pieces are changed out every three months; guests can always enjoy new items and fresh perspectives. The Gallery and Gift Shop contain works from more than 100 local and regional artists, who often find the peaceful shores of southern Alabama to be home and inspiration.

Art Center Director Desiree Blackwell offered insight into the harmony behind the center’s workings.

“As a fun tourist destination, we also want to display a ‘heart component’ in our city, and the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach is slated to shine as that very thing,” she revealed, “especially because there is such a good working relationship between the City of Orange Beach staff and the Friends of the Arts board. Together, we are creating both meaningful, artistic experiences as well as powerful, personal experiences at our beautiful facilities.”

While the pristine setting already offered a

picturesque backdrop for both summer fun and quiet reflection, a major renovation project is enhancing the beauty and feasibility of the grounds for special events while embracing the surrounding natural elements. Beginning in April, the center will be able to host outdoor weddings, concerts, movies on the lawn and corporate events.

In addition to the gallery and lovely grounds, The Hot Shop opened in 2009 and is the only public-access glass blowing facility in the state.

“Which means,” according to Blackwell, “the public can freely come in to watch or participate by appointment.”

The city employs resident glass artists Adam Burges and Kerry Parks.

This team amazes onlookers with their skillful use of blow torches, furnaces and cooling processes to bend molten glass to their will. The artists also enjoy a special bond with guests as they teach glass blowing and fusing techniques, impart knowledge about equipment and processes and share their passions for glass art.

The Clay Studio opened in late 2013 and offers visitors personal experience guided by ceramics resident artist Abby Leach. Beginning and experienced guests can enjoy sliding wet clay between their fingers on the pottery wheel and rolling pieces into shape as they hand build. Both facilities are available to rent for birthday parties and special events, in addition to public demonstrations and classes.

Finally, the education component rounds out the center’s mission. Adult classes and children’s after school programs extend knowledge and appreciation of many art genres, while summer camps and two-day specialty workshops provide a fun atmosphere coupled with expert instruction and exhibitions.

Blackwell shared her thoughts on the importance of the center’s provision of children’s programs.

“Children’s exposure to the arts is

so critical,” she began. “The center cares deeply about the children of this community and their experience

of visual and performing arts that sharpen critical thinking skills. We know that art experiences are important in their formative years and we strive to provide a nurturing environment for creative thought.”

In that vein, the center also provides the community with such gems as the Festival of Art, held every second weekend of March, The Scarecrow Festival every October and Light Up The Arts annual Christmas open house.

“In addition to intimate bay-side weddings, exciting glass blowing and wheel-throwing pottery lessons, free movies on the lawn and beautiful festivals, the center is also going to focus on giving back further to the area by hosting annual art exhibits, especially for the young,” Blackwell explained.

“One exhibit will feature the works of area children with special needs, another will feature emerging artists from local college campuses. With support from a BP grant, the City of Orange Beach and the Coastal Arts Center will be able to provide even more southern hospitality to both our residents and visitors year round, allowing us to more fully demonstrate our newest city slogan, ‘Your experience – Our pleasure.’”

Pecan Shortbread Cookies Makes 5 dozen cookies

Serves 10 – 15

6 medium to large potatoes, diced 6 medium to large carrots, sliced 1 large onion, diced 6 scallions, sliced 1 bag frozen green beans 6 cloves of garlic, diced 2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning 1 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon of garlic powder 2 teaspoon of Tabasco sauce 1 pound flaky fish (of your choice) 1 pound medium shrimp Whole milk Put first 6 ingredients in pot and add chicken broth — just enough to cover the vegetables. Add seasonings then cook until vegetables are mushy.

Taste test with spices and add as needed.

Saute the fish using olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder and Cajun seasoning. Dump the fish with oil and all into the chowder and stir. Saute shrimp using the same spices and oil as the fish and dump into the chowder.

Repeat with any other seafood, using the olive oil and spices and dumpling it into the chowder.

Finally put just enough whole milk to cover the chowder by an inch. Stir and adjust spices as needed.

2 cups (4 sticks) butter, softened 1-3/4 cups powdered sugar, divided 3-1/2 cups flour 1/2 cup cornstarch 1-1/2 cups chopped PLANTERS Pecans, toasted Heat oven to 350ºF. Beat butter and 1 cup sugar in large bowl with mixer until light and fluffy. Add flour and cornstarch; mix well. Stir in nuts.

Roll dough into 1-inch balls; place, 2 inches apart, on baking sheets. Flatten slightly with bottom of glass.

Bake 13 min. or until centers are set and tops are lightly browned; cool on baking sheets 5 min. Add warm cookies, 1 at a time, to remaining sugar; turn to evenly coat both sides of each. Cool completely on wire racks.
