With September underway, we here on the Island become a little more like the rest of the South. We welcome cooler weather, football games and the beginning of a homey feeling here on the Coast. In September, the traffic begins to disappear and the Island loses it’s season-long reputation of being a tourist attraction. However, the Coast is anything but boring in September. Events like Bulls on the Beach at Flora-Bama, The Wharf Uncorked and the Waterfront Concert Series at Happy Harbor keep the locals and September vacationers entertained even when the summer crowd says goodbye.

Sail the open water with Wild Hearts

W

hen Wild Hearts raises its sails, another coastal open water adventure is underway.

Based in San Roc Cay at the Perdido Beach Resort Soundside Pier, Wild Hearts sailboat gives boat-goers a chance to sail on the beautiful waters of the Gulf Coast.

Captains Zach Smith and Cherry Fowler provide a memorable experience for all guests aboard the 53-foot catamaran sailboat.

Wild Hearts offers three sails throughout the week. The morning dolphin cruise sail, the kayak adventure and the sunset cruise each offer a unique sailing experience.

The earliest cruise, the morning dolphin cruise, begins at 10 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday during the time dolphins are the most active. The two-hour cruise is a morning adventure that is a great start to the day for the early birds.

The kayak sail begins at 1:30 p.m. and is a three-hour adventure equipped with paddle boards, kayaks and snorkeling. Guests will sail

to an island where the beach fun awaits on the sand and in the water.

Guests are encouraged to bring beach gear such as towels, sunscreen, etc.

The sunset sail is a breathtaking experience for sailors. The trip begins at 6 p.m. and offers a prime time view of the magnificent sunset that we have here on the Gulf Coast.

Wild Hearts also has special Pensacola Blue Angels sail that will occur on Sept. 9, Sept. 16, and Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call Wild Hearts for rates.

During the daytime sails, the Wild

Hearts crew sells soda and has complimentary water during the trip. For the sunset sails both soda and water is complimentary. Refreshments are also served during the sails.

Guests are welcome to bring coolers along for any trip, but the crew recommends leaving behind glass.

Bottles of wine are acceptable.

Kids are entertained during the sailing adventure with hula hoops, frequent dolphin sightings and chances to steer the sailboat.

“It’s a fabulous experience. If you’ve never been sailing, this is the

sailboat to take,� said the crew.

All ages are welcome. The boat is handicap accessible and amenities include two restrooms.

Wild Hearts is also available for private events such as weddings, funerals, birthday parties, bachelor and baccalaureate parties, etc.

Waterfront Concert Series supports local artists and venues

andy Roots Music Productions (Nick Biebricher) and TOAD-U productions (Tom Harris) will manage and produce a Waterfront Concert Series that covers the coastal areas of Baldwin County, Alabama and Escambia County, Florida.

The Waterfront Concert Series will take place at numerous waterfront venues in our area with the first concert kicking off on Sept. 27 at Happy Harbor Oyster Bay Beach.

Organizers say the concert series was designed to showcase local talent, and the line-up certainly proves this true with performances from The Smoke’n Budz (Tom Harris, Jack Greene and Scott Parker) at 1 p.m., Melissa Joiner at 2:45 p.m., Harrison Mcinnis at 5 p.m., and John Joiner, Darrell Roberts and Conga Tom at 7 p.m.

The Happy Harbor Oyster Bay Beach concert will also include a fundraiser for the Oyster Bay Volunteer Fire Department. A donation booth will be setup at the event to contribute to the Fire Department. If enough items are collected, there will be a fundraising raffle.

Organizers said they created the event for several other important reasons. The organizers hope to raise awareness and acknowledgment of musical arts on the Gulf Coast. They also hope to promote Baldwin and Escambia County as an event destination and help market local businesses through sponsorship and advertising opportunities.

Another important reason for the event is to support local artists. Local musicians will have the opportunity to showcase their talent to larger

crowds.

“Come out for the kickoff of the Waterfront Concert series for what is sure to be a day of fun in the sun, supporting great causes and listening to some terrific local talent,” said Nick Biebricher, co-organizer for the event.

The Waterfront Concert Series is currently seeking support and sponsorship for their event. Wine tasting event gives a toast to The Wharf

E

njoy three days of delicious food, tantalizing wines and live entertainment with a pinch of southern flair and a dash of Gulf Coast hospitality.

Local 15 Anchor Greg Peterson is one of six judges for the event. Numerous wine and culinary events offer opportunities for foodies, wine connoisseurs and those who want to learn more about wine and culinary arts.

Tickets are on sale now at ticketmaster and at The Wharf Box Office.

A limited number of tickets will be available and all ticket holders will receive a complimentary commemorative wine glass and bag at the beginning of the Grand Tasting Event.

General Admission

General admission ticket holders will enjoy sampling tantalizing wines from international and local distributors expertly paired with custom culinary creations from nationally recognized chefs and local restaurants for the Food and Wine Grand Tasting Event on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m.

Restaurants will compete for various culinary awards including The People's Choice Award, sponsored

by Young's Suncoast Vacation Rentals. Winners will be announced at the end of the evening. Participating restaurants include Sunset Cork Room, Voyagers, The Louisiana Pantry, The Southern Grind, Villaggio Grille, Ginny Lane Bar & Grill, The Beach Club and Flora-Bama Yacht Club. Rodeo gates open at Flora-Bama

A

merica's last roadhouse is hosting the annual Bulls on the Beach event for a weekend filled with bulls, cowboys and of course, Flora-Bama's famous bushwhackers.

This is the second year Bulls on the Beach has been at Flora-Bama.

“Flora-Bama worked well with the guys from Bulls on the Beach, so I think they've found a home here for awhile,” Jenifer Surface-Ivey, marketing director for the Flora-Bama, said.

The three-day event will officially kick-off on Thursday night, Sept. 11.

“The event will start on Thursday with a black-tie event with the cowboys at Flora-Bama Yacht Club,” Surface-Ivey said. “We will have a really nice dinner as a fundraiser for St. Judes Research Hospital and we'll have a Calcutta where we auction off the cowboys and the bulls.”

On Friday night, Flora-Bama has added a country concert to the event. Country music legend Sammy Kershaw will perform in the arena at 8 p.m.

Saturday's events will lead up to the rodeo on Saturday night. There will be a Mechanical Bull Riding Bikini Contest on Saturday at 3 p.m. for a $500 prize. There will be mechanical bull riding for the public all night a $5 per person with a signed waiver.

The rodeo will follow at 8 p.m. in the east parking lot of Flora-Bama.

“If you're walking in the main entrance of Flora-Bama, it will be to your left in the east parking lot. We will set

up bleachers and the arena in that parking lot,” SurfaceIvey said.

Riders include professional bull riders from across the Southeast. Many of the riders are stars of National Geographic's new reality TV show, “Dukes of Cattle.”

The show follows real-life cowboys Bubba Thompson, Booger Brown and Cody Harris as they strive to build their own cattle company.

Harris, a Gulf Coast native, has been featured CMT's reality shows “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Southern Nights.”

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit!

It was a beautiful summer morning when we left Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and getting a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot.

We have both been very dissatisfied with the last few attempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideration our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother.

The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on time to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beautiful.

Pam, my friend, went first since I was a little chicken after the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, after that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condition her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right.

So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep conditioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of motion, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair.

Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer

gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the conditioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condition our hair the same.

Anthony explained that at all times our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out.

Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. After we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and conditioning my hair had ever had.

While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. After shampooing and before conditioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, putting any conditioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more.

After she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bottle. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.

Capt. Mark asks,

‘Who’s on the Island?’

Mary answered the door and led me to the den where he sat in his favorite leather easy chair. His wheel chair was close by reminding you of his Parkinson’s disease and two falls that resulted in three hip surgeries and three months in a nursing home recovering and going thru rehab.

Wayne Evans had always been a strong, athletic man who led an active life. He was a leader and a fighter and this was not going to stop him.

Born in 1932 in Newport, Tenn., Evans’ dad was a Southern Baptist Minister, but passed away when Wayne was 2 years old. Wayne never knew his dad, but for years had heard stories of his fire and brimstone way of preaching.

His mom worked in the school cafeteria and also for Shockley Bros. Everyone in town worked for Shockley, a vegetable canning company that ran Newport. They had a whistle on their main building that sounded when vegetables were cooked and were ready for canning.

You could hear the whistle all over town, and when it sounded you would stop whatever you were doing and report to the factory to work.

He played on the varsity basketball team in high school, was quarterback on the varsity football team and even boxed Golden Gloves for a semester or two.

Though his grades were just mediocre, he was offered a scholarship to play football at Milligan College. He accepted.

Still a party boy, he rarely studied and eventually flunked out.

Wayne Evans

He then heard about a summer job with Caterpillar in Peoria, Ill. Wayne and two buddies applied, were hired and spent the sumMARK mer working. In 1952, a Navy recruiter Wayne ROBINSON signed up for a four-year hitch in the Navy.

He was sent to Jacksonville, Fla., to be evaluated where it was determined that he be sent to Airplane Mechanic’s school in Memphis. For the next two years, he was assigned the position of “orderly” on a transport plane carrying troops from Hawaii to Japan, Guam and Midway.

At the end of his four years, he decided to come home.

Getting an honorable discharge, he was ready for whatever lay ahead of him.

Needing a job, he returned to Newport. When he’d arrived, he heard of a job in Knoxville with the Telephone Company and he hit the road with the little money he had, and most all the clothes he owned. Arriving at the interview, the hiring manager looked Wayne over and told him, “We don’t hire bums.”

Wayne replied, “I’m here to work”, and he was hired. Thirty-two years later he retired from Bell South.

He then transferred to Mobile as a second level manager, but a need for him came up and he was sent back to the TriCities (Tenn.) as Central Office Manager. He stayed for six years before he found an opening back in Mobile.

He moved into an apartment complex where his next door neighbor just happened to be a beautiful lady named Mary, who was a schoolteacher at the time. It took two years of sweet talking and chocolates (she wasn’t impressed with his fancy Thunderbird) before she finally gave in and went out with him. In 1980 they got married.

Wayne retired and they moved to the beach where Wayne built a very nice and comfortable home. Wayne enjoyed fishing, but after retiring and being introduced to golf, that sport became his passion. He spent spare time golfing at every opportunity with two friends, Tim Sullivan and Jack Nicholson.

In 1988 he noticed a slight tremor in his hands and his head, and a little uncertainty in his walking. An appointment with a neurosurgeon confirmed his suspicion that his problem was Parkinson’s. Determined not to let it get him down, he continued doing the things he loved to do. His wife, Mary was and is supportive, and Wayne did well till he tripped, fell and broke his hip last year.

This past year has been a rough one. At 82, the bones don’t heal so quickly, but Wayne’s attitude is wonderful. He plans to heal, get stronger and to play golf again.

He and Mary still go out occasionally to a late lunch or dinner and they still love to entertain.

Wayne’s a remarkable man. Always a smile, always a friendly ‘hello,’ always a wave when you drive past his home and see him there on his lawn mower. How lucky we ON THE ISLAND are to have him with us, and how lucky I am to be able to call him my friend.

Instructors for Dance Night at the Gallery are Jason and Eliza Huskey of the Gulf Coast Ballroom Dance Club. Jason Huskey, a native of Tennessee, received his early classic ballroom training through the nationally acclaimed Fred Astaire Ballroom Dance curriculum. After receiving numerous certificates, he began teaching professionally at the Fred Astaire Franchise Dance Studio in Mobile.

Eliza Huskey, a native of Alabama, is a lifelong, second-generation ballroom dancer.

She received early training from her parents who have a combined training of nearly 30 years in the Arthur Murray and DanceSport curriculums. Eliza began teaching professionally in the 90s at the David Minor DanceSport Ballroom in Mobile.

Jason and Eliza have been dancing together and teaching ballroom for more than 14 years. Together, they have received years of world-class international ballroom style competitive training from Icelandic coaches and World DanceSport Federation adjudicators, Niels Einarsson and Rakel Gudmundsdottir. Q&A with Sammy Kershaw

By Destiny Brown Country music trail blazer, Sammy Kershaw, will take the stage at the rodeo arena at Bulls on the Beach at Flora-Bama. Known for his country gold favorites like “Queen of my Double Wide Trailer,” and “Vidalia,” Kershaw has made a name for himself in the country music world. Sammy gives Beachin’ an exclusive interview on his new tribute album to George Jones, his love for the Gulf Coast and more.

When did you begin playing music?

I was 12 -years-old when I began playing music in nightclubs and beer joints. I was just a boy.

Q: A:

Where do you draw inspiration for your songs?

If I lived the story, I’ll record it. If I didn’t live it, I won’t record it. That’s just the way it is.

Q:

Tell me about your newest album, “Possum: A Tribute to George Jones.”

A:

Well, it’s something that I didn’t need to do, but wanted to do for my friend. George and I have been friends for many years and I wanted to do a tribute to my friend and I did it. I hope folks like it.

Q: A:

Are you excited to play in this area?

Gulf Shores is my favorite place in Alabama and it always has been. I love so play on the Gulf Coast. I’m a Louisiana boy so anytime I can play down here, I’m excited. I like to play outdoors and I like it hot and humid.

Frequently Asked Questions 1) Tents (no larger than a 10x10 ft.) are allowed on the beach, but they have to be placed behind (North of) the designated sign marker post and should be removed before night.

Tents cannot be placed between the sign post and the Gulf of Mexico. This is for designated emergency and safety access.

2) Pets are not allowed on the beach on the Gulf of Mexico or surrounding islands (Robinson, Bird, Walker). However they are allowed at the designated city Dog Park on Canal Rd. (Hwy 180) next to Sportsman Marina. All dogs should remain on a leash within the city limits.

3) Glass in any form (bottle, cup, container, etc.) is strictly prohibited on our beaches and islands.

4) A yellow or green flag posted along gulf beaches means to use caution while swimming in the gulf waters and is permitted.

A red flag means danger and one should not swim in the waters.

Double red flags mean that swimming in the waters is prohibited by law.

Purple means WARNING! A jellyfish or other marine threat.

5) All trails and parks are free and open from daylight to dusk 7 days a week.

6) Fires or flames are strictly prohibited on the beach. This includes grills, tiki-torches, lanterns, open fire pits, candles, fireworks, etc.

7) Jet skis, boats, and any other motorized vessels, are prohibited from launching along the gulf front beaches.

Ingredients n 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper n 1/4 cup chopped red onion n 18 peeled and deveined crawfish tails n 2 peeled and deveined 21/25 count chopped shrimp n 1 teaspoon salt and pepper n 1 cup cheddar cheese n 1/2 cup heavy cream n 2 tablespoons extra

virgin olive oil n 1 stalk green onion julienned (top only) n 2 Cajun pistolett rolls Preparation Heat the olive oil in sauté pan over medium flame. Sauté onion, peppers, shrimp and crawfish until they become translucent.

Add salt and pepper then add heavy cream and reduce by a half.

Add cheddar cheese and stir until melted.

Remove from heat and bake bread in oven at 400 degrees until crisp on top.

Slice bread leaving 1/4 inch on each end.

Open top and fill with 1/2 of the sauteed mixture.

Garnish with green onion and cheddar cheese sprinkles.
