July brings summer visitors from all over, but it also brings many summertime activities that keep the beach entertaining. Watersports galore, live music and summer camps for the kids are just a few of the fun things to check out at the beach this summer. Independence Day on the Gulf is sure to fascinate any firework spectator and all are invited to the public beaches for the show. With the opening of many new restaurants and retail shops, the variety we have here at the beach is sure to satisfy any summer vacation tastes.

hether you’re squinting from the reflection on the water or covering your eyes from the sun rays at the beach, sunglasses are a summer

necessity.

Knowing what you’re paying for is a good plan while shopping for anything, especially sunglasses. You may think your $5 pair is just as good as the one that costs a couple hundred bucks, but there are many benefits that only certain sunglasses give. “The high-end sunglasses are more for active people like surfers, motocrossers and water activities,” McElroy said. “And we're in the South so these activities are popular.”

Costa and Oakley are two favorites for glare protection and durability.

“Costas are great for when you're on the water,” Morehead said. “It cuts out the glare from the water if you're fishing.”

“Surfers tend to go more towards the Oakley,” Morehead added. “Because they don't fall off as easily and some even have popable lenses.”

This year, it’s all about the wayfarer style.

“Fashion wise, Ray-Bans are the most popular,” said Koty Morehead at Shades in Orange Beach. “Everyone wants that Tom Cruise look.”

The Hangout in Gulf Shores even carries mini wayfarer styles for the kids.

For the ladies, the ever popular Jackie-O sunglasses are trending. Designer shades with big frames haven’t lost their appeal and continue to be a major seller.

The Types of Lenses

Polarized lenses: Polarized lenses specialize in reducing glare.

Polarization is a great feature if you enjoy water sports or especially if you have sensitive eyes.

Photochromic lenses: Photochromic lenses automatically adjust to changing light conditions. These lenses actually get darker on bright days, and lighter when conditions get darker.

(The photochromic process takes longer to work in cold conditions, and it doesn’t work at all when driving a car because UVB rays do not penetrate your windshield.)

Interchangeable lenses: Some sunglass styles come with removable lenses of different colors. These multi-lens systems allow you to tailor your eye protection to your activities and conditions.

Yoga for every BODY T

he Orange Beach Adult Activity Center is now holding Gentle Yoga Classes each week with certified yoga instructor, Sallie Beckes.

The one hour Gentle Yoga classes are back-care friendly and suited for all levels and body types. Gentle Yoga moves at a slower pace with the extra support of props for added stability and balance which makes this class suitable for seniors, and those with chronic pain, such as arthritis, or injuries.

A typical class consists of some stretching on the mat, moving to seated chair postures, rising to stand and standing wall-supported postures. Floor postures and standing are optional, and those who remain in chairs are offered seated modifications. Deep breathing and mindfulness are also included in the practice, bringing calmness and peace of mind.

No yoga experience is necessary. The Center provides some yoga mats, but you are encouraged to bring your own. Wear stretchy-type clothing and arrive 15 minutes early to settle in.

New surf shop opens in Orange Beach

R

on Jon Surf Shop is a well-known chain in the beach and surfing world. With sister locations in Panama City, Key West and more, the chain’s 12th and newest location has recently opened it’s doors in Orange Beach.

Ron Jon Surf Shop was founded in 1959 by surfing enthusiast Ron DiMenna. Two years later, he opened a tiny oceanside shop in Long Beach Island, N.J. The store carries swim wear, sunglasses, cell phone accessories, towels, surf and skim boards, beach toys and an abundance of other beach necessities.

“Orange Beach is an area we’ve been looking at for awhile,” said Heather Lewis, marketing director for Ron Jons. “As far as the family-friendly market and the beach market, there’s a good crowd of people and seasonality there.”

The newest location has only been open a month, but is doing great business on the beach.

“We’ve been really happy with the business for our first month and I expect it to get stronger throughout the summer,” Lewis said.

The store carries many name brand items, including the popular selling Ron Jons brand.

“A big seller right now is definitely anything with the Ron Jon brand on it,” Lewis said. “Outside of the Ron Jon brand, we're doing really well the Natural Life brand, home décor items, signs and things like.”

Ron Jons Surf Shop is located at 22723 Perdido Blvd., Orange Beach and is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

on fishin’ with Phil Dortch My dear old Dad, Pop, as everyone called him, had lots of cool sayings, one of which was, “there are more ways to choke a cat besides on butter,” meaning there’s more than one way to accomplish whatever it is you’re trying to do.

The same thing applies when it comes to catching fish. These creatures of the sea that we have such a passion to pursue can be quite frustrating to catch at times, thus demanding we have a bag of tricks up our sleeve which I will refer to as “methods.” It seems that every species requires a KING MACKEREL: Right now, the Kings are all around the Gulf rigs and fairly easy to catch, but at the same time can be rather finicky. Troll Gotcha lures. I like white with red head. I pull them at about 1,300 rpm. If you get no strikes, but know they are there by seeing them jump or either on the sonar, speed up or slow down.

Another method is to slow troll or drift with the current using wire leader with a duster covering the main hook. I like to use “King Buster” skirts, any color.

Make up a lot of rigs to be ready because the Kings will cut you off. I use a 44-pound steel wire leader about two feet long, putting a swivel on one end and a 4.0 circle hook on the other end with the duster sliding down over the main hook. Then I make up a 6-inch wire leader with a swivel small enough to slide over the barb of the main hook, and put a treble hook on the other.

These two different leaders can be stored separately ready for use. Slide the short leader swivel over the main hook barb, then I use a live pogie, hooked through the lips, which keeps the short leader from sliding off the main hook.

Most often, the King will get caught on the treble hook when they try to hit the bait to kill it. Be extra cautious when removing the hooks from a freshly caught King. The sharp teeth and hooks are quite dangerous.

Another method that works is to tie up to the down current side of a gas rig and let your bait freeline in the current with no weight or duster at all, or drift one under a cork or balloon. Remember when fishing for any Mackerel, a wire leader is required. The smaller Kings are great to filet and cook on the grill skin side down. Marinate with a little olive oil, sprinkle Ranch Dressing mix and Old Bay, or any favorite seasoning and cook till flakey.

SPANISH MACKEREL: Years ago, I could

Weather is always a determining factor when fishing. You simply have to adjust depending on wind or current. Change size sinkers, tackle, bait or whatever works, but keep fishing.

Therein lies the challenge for us fisherman, trying to answer the ageold question ... “are the fish not here, or just not biting what I offer them right now?” With that in mind let’s ponder a few methods I have successfully used to fool different fish. troll down the beach dragging a Clark spoon, maybe with a short piece of McDonalds straw attached and catch a box full of Spanish. For me, those days seem to be gone for some reason.

Large schools of Spanish are often harder to find now due to Alabama net fisherman. When you do find some, they are fun to catch.

Try using the Gotcha lures trolling or casting into a school. Troll around the school letting your line run back around rather that trolling through the school, which spooks them causing them to go down and disappear. Look for birds feeding.

Another good bait is a “Speck Rig.” They come already made up, two on a mono leader.

To prevent losing so many baits due to cutoffs, remove the mono and replace with light weight leader wire. Another method is to troll or cast using a light leader wire about two feet long with a small treble hook tipped with a small live bait like Pilchards.

JACK CREVELLE: The bulldog of inshore/ nearshore fishing. Don’t mistake them for a yellowfin tuna, which will not be caught near shore. These beautiful fish are often caught on live bait with a two- to four-ounce sinker on an outgoing tide on Dixey Bar or drifting along the Mobile ship channel.

No wire leader is needed, but be prepared for the fight of your life. They compare to catching a giant Amberjack offshore. I have had them on the line for an hour and 20 minutes depending on the size tackle you’re using. A Zebco 33 won’t work. Don’t be surprised if you have to crank the boat and run them down to retrieve some line, and when they see the boat, gone again. Be prepared to make several trips round and round the boat.

Jacks are not anything you want to eat, but make for an awesome fight that you will never forget. Get a quick photo and make sure to re-

vive them for another fun fight.

BLUEFISH: Fun to catch, strong fighters, sharp teeth and require wire leader. Expect numerous cutoffs. I make up wire leaders and even paint the sinker black because they strike anything shiny. Most people don’t keep Bluefish but they make a great “Smoked Bluefish Pate.”

BULL REDS/SLOT REDS: Same fish, different size. The slot limit in Alabama is 16 to 26 inches, three fish per person. The Bull Red is any Redfish more than 26 inches with a one per person limit. They do not require a wire leader like the Mackerel. Most any bait will work, live, dead or artificial.

For the Bull Reds, drift Dixey Bar on an outgoing tide with pogies or croaker. Other methods are to troll using Stretch 25 or 30 size lures or troll with a spoon behind a No.2 planer by Strike King. For the slot reds, try Gulp baits, gold spoons, live finger mullet or most anything. Fish the river and sloughs looking for any movement or tailing fish.

Gently roll into small ball then roll ball in extra Panko, coating the ball.

Mash flat slightly and cook in a little olive oil till brown on both sides.

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit!

It was a beau�ful summer morning when we le� Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and ge�ng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot.

We have both been very dissa�sed with the last few a�empts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into considera�on our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother.

The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on �me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beau�ful.

Pam, my friend, went rst since I was a li�le chicken a�er the last experiences.

Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He rst looked at her face shape and explained that there are ve face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, a�er that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condi�on her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right.

So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condi�oning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of mo�on, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was nished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair.

Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condi�oners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condi�on our hair the same.

Anthony explained that at all �mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily.

A�er we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condi�oning my hair had ever had.

While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. A�er shampooing and before condi�oning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pu�ng any condi�oner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it rst then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more.

A�er she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bo�le. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are denitely going back. He is a true professional.

MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT: MEL KNAPP

M

aybe you've seen his name headlining at the FloraBama, or maybe you've been to one of the open mic nights he hosts every week. If you live on the Island, Mel Knapp is quickly becoming a well-known name on the local marquees. Now, the 32-year-old musician from Demopolis is taking time to pursue his solo career as not only a musician, but as an artist.

Mel officially began his guitar career when he was 13.

After his mom bought him a guitar, the young musician went to picking out songs like “Brain Stew,” by Green Day. Mel admits that the first time he decided he wanted to get serious about the guitar was when he played “Glycerine,” in front of a girl.

His love for chasing girls was short lived and his interests quickly switched from girls to learning more about his trade.

Mel started off as the bassist for his first band, “Bubble,” with fellow musician, Charlie Wilson, who he still plays shows with today.

Exploring how far he could take his music, Mel toured the southeast music circuit with another band, “Turkish Delight.” Mel toured until he needed vacation and that's when he took a week off to head down to Orange Beach.

On that vacation in late 2004, Mel met Smokey Otis of the Foxy Iguanas.

“The band's bassist had just won some money at a casino and skipped town, so the band was in need a replacement,” Knapp said. “I asked them to set me up a bass rig and give me a chance and I played with them that night. A week later, I got a phone call from their manager asking if I was interested in moving down to the beach.”

Having nowhere to live, Mel stayed with the band's drummer and toured with Catch Mel on the the Foxy Iguanas for the coast every week! next two and a half years.

Noticing the freedom that solo musicians seemed to

have over their music, Mel decided he wanted to give it a try for himself.

“I locked myself in my room for three days, learned about 40 songs and how to play and sing them on the guitar and then Live Bait at The Wharf gave me my first solo gig,” Knapp said.

That first gig built up his reputation in the area and he was soon helping other musicians on their albums.

Knapp continued from page 25 “I think everybody’s humble here,” Knapp said. “I've been to L.A., I've experienced Nashville, but down here is an untapped resource of talent. Nobody moves here to be famous, but some of the musicians could be and they're way better than some of the famous people I've already heard.”

Knapp has played with well over 50 musicians in the area.

“We're not cut-throat musicians,” Knapp said. “It's a competition, but it’s a respectful competition. It's kind of like a mafia down here — but a good mafia. If you spit on one of us, you might as well spit on all of us because we have each other’s back.”

“I'm used to helping other musicians and I've always enjoyed doing that,” Knapp said. “But this year, I want to do my own thing. I've already established myself as a musician and now I want to establish myself as an artist.”

Now, Mel is planning on taking his solo career to the next level.

“The music I write is for me, which has been the case for a while — up until this year,” Knapp said.

Mel plans on getting his songs published in the near future, and he wouldn't mind his songs being recorded

by someone who has as just as much love for the song as he does. Knapp hopes to have his album out within the next year.

Knapp not only helps out other musicians, he enjoys helping out everyone.

Once a month, Knapp entertains the patients at Blake, a living facility for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s, in Malbis.

“I enjoy doing that and I think it's amazing that people count out older people because they have a so called disability,” Knapp said. “But I proved it wrong last time I was there. Some of them actually remembered my name.

They couldn’t tell me the day of the week, but the power of music can transcend all of that. Last time they not only remembered me, but they remembered what songs I played and they would sing the songs with me.”

Knapp enjoys lending a hand to others and shares his love for music with all who are around him. He is excited to continue his solo music career and to pursue his original music.

“I'm the musician that likes to help and can't help but to help another musician achieve what they hear in their head,” Knapp said. “It made me happy for many years and was a great accepted challenge, but now it's time for me to help myself and get myself out there as not just a musician but as an artist. Better late than never!”

Frequently Asked Questions

1) Tents (no larger than a 10x10 ft.) are allowed on the beach, but they have to be placed behind (North of) the designated sign marker post and should be removed before night.

Tents cannot be placed between the sign post and the Gulf of Mexico. This is for designated emergency and safety access.

2) Pets are not allowed on the beach on the Gulf of Mexico or surrounding islands (Robinson, Bird, Walker). However they are allowed at the designated city Dog Park on Canal Rd. (Hwy 180) next to Sportsman Marina. All dogs should remain on a leash within the city limits.

3) Glass in any form (bottle, cup, container, etc.) is strictly prohibited on our beaches and islands.

4) A yellow or green ag posted along gulf beaches means to use caution while swimming in the gulf waters and is permitted.

A red ag means danger and one should not swim in the waters.

Double red ags mean that swimming in the waters is prohibited by law.

Purple means WARNING! A jellysh or other marine threat.

5) All trails and parks are free and open from daylight to dusk 7 days a week.

6) Fires or ames are strictly prohibited on the beach. This includes grills, tiki-torches, lanterns, open re pits, candles, reworks, etc.

7) Jet skis, boats, and any other motorized vessels, are prohibited from launching along the gulf front beaches.

Explore the arts at Kaleidoscope

T

he Kaleidoscope Summer Fine Arts Camp will be July 13 through 17 and is a partnership between the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance and the First Presbyterian Church of Gulf Shores. The goal of this camp is to give young people a glimpse into the extraordinary world of the fine arts, by participating in both hands-on classes and experiencing live, professional performances.

The camp encompasses all realms of the fine arts, including various mediums of visual art, many different musical genres, dance, drama and literature. Offered to those entering second through eighth grades, students will be divided into age categories for classes. Each will be able to indicate class preferences, but will also be exposed to all the fine arts through the performances.

This event is a revitalization of the camp coordinated for several years by the former Gulf Coast Arts Council, now merged with the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance. It has

been greatly enhanced by a wider group of coordinating, performing and exhibiting professional artists.

The Kaleidoscope Summer Fine Arts Camp will offer music, dance, drama/theatre, stories, pastels, pottery, mosaics, watercolors, textile arts and drawing. AUGUST ABSTRACTS A special exhibit by Susan McCullough

T

he Gulf Coast Arts Alliance is honored to present a special exhibit“August Abstracts,”

by Susan McCullough, a well-known Gulf Shores artist. The exhibit will be on display in the GCAA Art Gallery from July 30 until August 31. A reception will be held on July 30, from 6 – 8 p.m. The public has a cordial invitation to attend.

Susan Nomberg McCullough received her bachelor of science degree in speech and art from the University of Alabama and has continued to study with many accomplished artists and teachers, including Professors Al Sella and Frank Engle of Tuscaloosa, and Max Hellman at The Birmingham Museum of Art. She has also studied at the Delgado Museum of New Orleans, now the New Orleans Museum of Art, and in other locations throughout the United States.

Having produced more than 500 paintings, Susan’s art is displayed in libraries, banks, hospitals, senior care facilities, interior design showrooms, corporate offices and private collections. Her commissioned portrait of Pasquale’s Inc. founder, “Papa” Pasquale, hangs in the company’s national corporate office.

The University of Alabama recently commissioned Susan to create a painting to honor her late professor and life-long mentor, Al Sella. The painting is an impressionistic portrait of the iconic artists and his emblematic bicycle. The portrait now hangs in the art building, Clark

Susan’s was recently honored by having two of her works selected to be on display at the Exhibition Florence Biennale in Florence Italy. This event will be held in September. The two pieces selected will be on display at the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance Art Gallery during her “August Abstracts” exhibition, July 30 through August 31.

Susan and her husband, Gaylon, are long time residents of Gulf Shores. Most days you will find Susan working in her Gallery and Studio at 350 Cypress Bend Blvd., located next to the Villas at The McCullough Institute in Gulf Shores.
