Celebrate spring, at the 62nd Annual Arts & Crafts Festival: Visit Fairhope March 14, 15 and 16 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily The Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival is a beloved annual celebration of spring and of the arts.

Thousands of beautiful flowers combined with some of the best arts and crafts across the nation create a backdrop for the perfect spring weekend in downtown Fairhope. Visitors are sure to leave with new treasures and memories to last a lifetime.

WHERE: Beautiful downtown Fairhope (on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay)

PARKING: To get to the festival, travel on Highway 98 South of I-10 to the Fairhope Avenue intersection. The festival is downtown, but free parking is available at Plantation Pointe Shopping Center, Ecor Rouge Place Center and Eastern Shore Village Center. Baldwin Rural Area Transportation System (BRATS) will provide a shuttle service to festival site for $2 each way. Free bike valet parking is behind the Fairhope Museum of History. Handicapped parking is behind Julwin’s Restaurant.

WHY: A celebration of spring and of the arts; an opportunity to purchase the highest quality of arts and crafts from more than 200 exhibitors from all over the nation; to get a taste of unique and different cuisine at the food court; and enjoy wonderful entertainment.

COST: There is no admission fee to enter the festival.

Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope

ranks 23 out of 100 in ‘Sunshine Artist’s Magazine’ The Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope has been chosen as No. 23 of 100 of the Best Classic & Contemporary Crafts Shows in the nation for 2013 by Sunshine Artist Magazine. This is the 11th year the festival has been listed.

The ranking was published in the magazine’s September issue featuring 200 of the Best Shows in the nation, 100 of the Best Classic & Contemporary Crafts Shows and 100 of the Fine Art and Design Shows. This is the 21st year the magazine, a leading trade publication, surveyed and published its readers’ top-selling events.

The survey requests various pieces of information, like actual sales totals at top shows, the art medium, price range and attendance. Entering all the information into a database created the results, comparing shows held across the nation. In addition, the special comments and rankings were reviewed, as well as state reports, audit cards and letters.

According to the festival planners, the 23rd place ranking among the Top 100 shows is a true accolade of a the attitude of the community and the warmth displayed by its residents.

“We are so honored that more than 230 artists and

craftsmen choose to participate in our show,” said Jaca McLaren, chairman of the festival. “This is such a wonderful festival for such a small town. It’s amazing that we can bring so many people to the area. To be ranked so high in the nation really puts Fairhope on the map.”

The city lavishes tender loving care upon the show’s entryway and streets in anticipation, and merchants welcome the exhibitors with open arms by inviting them to utilize their facilities by dropping by for a cup of coffee or using the restrooms.

McLaren is one of more than 50 volunteers who go beyond the call to make the exhibitors feel at home. High school groups comb through the crowds throughout the three-day event to serve drinks and fruit. They also booth sit so exhibitors can take a needed break.

“Not only are we able to showcase the hospitality and beauty of Fairhope and the entire Eastern Shore, we are extremely proud that our festival has such an economic impact, an estimated $8 million, each year,” said Darrelyn Bender, chamber president.

In addition, live local entertainment will take place on stage throughout the event, and classic festival foods will be served to highlight the weekend.

Meet Ron Thomson Southern life depicted in official festival artwork The official artwork for the 2014 Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival was painted by Ron Thomson, a resident of Fairhope.

Thomson was sought out to create the official artwork

by Jaca McLaren, chairman of this year’s festival. The oil painting is based on the theme of this year’s festival, “Southern Hospitality.” It depicts an ice cold glass of sweet tea served in a Mason jar on a warm summer’s day.

The jar sits on a typical Southern veranda amongst the live oak trees. Thomson got his inspiration for the painting from life on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. “I thought, ‘Who are we?’ Are we sailing on the bay, strolling downtown or are we simply relaxing on the veranda, enjoying a glass of sweet tea?” Thomson considered. “It’s more than a painting of what we do, but more of who we are. It is what it means to live in the Deep South in a unique town called Fairhope.”

2014 Thomson will also be participating in the Arts & Crafts Festival, exhibiting sailboat paintings and some European scenes.

A native of a small community south of Tallahassee called Sopchoppy, Fla., Thomson discovered his creative side when he was 18 months old. His mother and grandmother are both artists.

Thomson earned a bachelor’s of fine art degree from Florida State University. While there he met and married Ellen “Scotty” Thomson, who was serving as a nurse in the U.S. Navy. Ron and Scotty have two children, Natalie, 19, and Nicholas, 17.

The couple moved to Fairhope 10 years ago after realizing they wanted to live in a place where they could enjoy the small town life. Thomson’s wife is now a nurse at Thomas Hospital, and he enjoys painting full time in addition to conducting workshops throughout the southeast and participating in shows.

“In teaching workshops, we begin with drawing exercises that quickly focus the attention on aspects of light and form that are pivotal to the success of the painting that follows,” Thomson said. “I introduce the foundations of the painting that follows.”

Thomson said he was proud to be selected to create the official art work for this year’s festival.

“It goes without saying that this is a rich artist’s community,” he said. “To be asked to create the artwork for the festival was a huge honor.”

Awards, judges Cash Prizes Awarded to Artists and Craftsmen

A panel of highly respected and talented judges have been invited to pick the best of the best in the 62nd Annual Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope. Seventy awards are to be presented at this year’s event.

The judges will have a tremendous challenge facing them at this year’s festival.

More than 230 of the most talented artists and craftsmen in the U.S. will exhibit their works. The awards will be presented during the Exhibitor’s Dinner on Friday evening.

Meet the judges Peter Kinney

Since 1998, Peter Kinney’s work has involved the use of found earths and natural materials from various locations where he has traveled. With a range of earth based colors, he makes landscape based paintings springing from a location, personal myth, fantasy Kinney and play. In addition, Peter often will make site specific installations with found materials. He studied art history at Syracuse University and received his PhD. in Italian Renaissance art history from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.

After traveling in Italy and Europe for four years, he returned to the Philadelphia area and taught art at the University of the Arts at Moore College of Art, and the Haverford School. Lately he has been composing assemblages in his birdbath, taking photos of them, and making books and poems with these. He has published four art books to date.

Carole Marie

Carole Marie is a multi-media and award-winning artist from the Ocean Springs, Miss. area. She is primarily known for her bold and colorful expressive quality of paintings.

Viewers are never disappointed with her storytelling techniques and her unique style Marie of art. Carole Marie’s work has appeared in numerous juried art shows and exhibitions in 11 states in the United States. She was also invited to participate as an emerging contemporary artist in 2009 and 2012 at the International Art Gallery in Florence, Italy. Her art can be found locally at the Art House, and the Pink Rooster, Ocean Springs and at Gallery 782 in Biloxi, Miss. Although, Carole Marie is predominantly known for her paintings, she is also a potter, photographer and sculptor.

She is an avid supporter of the arts and a contributing artist in Ocean Springs to numerous organizations. As returning M.G.C.C.C Alumni, Carole Marie graduated with honors in 2004, and was also selected for the Mississippi All-American Academic Team.

Rosa Terremocha Pedros

Rosa was born in a small town on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea near Valencia, Spain.

Pedros graduated from the School of Arts in Valencia concentrating on restoration and conservation of paintings, sculptures and metals, Pedros following the principals of the Italian school of restoration and conservation. In addition, she completed a special course on processes of conservation and restoration at the University of Murcia (Spain) Art Center.

Her graduation requirements included studying the theory of restoration and conservation of paintings and sculptures. Within that course of study, she performed more than 600 hours of practical experience in restoration and conservation of paintings and sculptures in addition to 100 hours experience restoring metals. She has studied art in Spain, New York and California.

She also has experience creating original painting with oils, watercolors and acrylics on canvas, wood, wall murals and furniture. She has exhibited and sold decorative paintings on wood at a private exhibition in Boca Raton, Fla. She has also taught Decorative Painting in a private studio in Valencia, Spain.

For the past 15 years, Rosa has concentrated on conservation and restoration of paintings for galleries, churches and private collectors in the United States. Locally, she performed conservation and restoration work for the Greek Orthodox Church in Malbis.

She has lived in California, New York, India and currently resides with her family in Tampa, Fla. Rosa owns a restoration studio and serves clients from across the United States.

History of the Arts & Crafts Festival The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce is now in its 62nd year of coordinating the Arts & Crafts Festival in Fairhope, presented by Fairhope Falls, a master-planned community. It originally began as a tour, planned to coordinate with the Mobile Jaycees’ Azalea Trail and Mobile Mardi Gras celebrations. The original idea was that visitors attending the major events in Mobile would be attracted across the bay, allowing visitors and local residents a chance to see some of the many talents of Eastern Shore residents.

According to Chamber records and newspaper articles, the first Arts & Crafts tour took place Feb. 22 – Feb. 28, 1952. All exhibits were inside store windows and consisted of a variety of interests.

The tour schedule included entertainment and craft demonstrations, and lasted for an entire week. Although some artists sold items, the ma-

jority of the tour consisted of exhibits for viewing only.

As one may see from this history, the festival has changed in many ways. The festival’s exhibitors are no longer only locals; they come from across the United States. No charge for exhibitors commission on their sales, just an entry fee. The number of visitors is now in six-digit figures, and the activities taking place in conjunction with the festival have grown by leaps and bounds.

The Arts & Crafts Festival’s purpose remains the same — to promote goodwill and festivity to Fairhope and the Eastern Shore, to provide working capital for the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, to exhibit for show and sale the highest quality artwork and craftsmanship available and to host the festival in the loveliest area in the world.

The tour expanded to include exhibitors and activities from the cities of Spanish Fort and Daphne. The week’s opening ceremonies were held in Spanish Fort and ended with a play in Fairhope. The Chamber reported 4,150 visitors. There were 52 exhibitors and demonstrators highlighted, in addition to another 41 artists who participated.

There were more than 100 displays, exhibits and demonstrations. There was no entry fee, but all participants were asked to pay a 10 percent commission on their gross sales.

Craftsmen displayed works and methods in “Craft-Houses,” which were created out of vacant buildings.

The show was condensed to three days.

This was also the first year craftsmen were placed on the sidewalks rather than in buildings and businesses.

The first prize money was awarded. The Best of Show recipient was given $250, and booths were moved from the edge of the streets to the middle. The Mary McGrath Award was established in 1984.

We approach this year’s show with much of the same excitement and enthusiasm that previous festivals and tours shared.

The 45th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival was first named one of the Top 200 festivals in the United States by Sunshine Artist Magazine. The festival has received this same honor in the following years.

Races begin at the intersection of Fairhope Avenue and Bayview Street 10k begins at 8 a.m. and 2-mile fun run/walk begins at 9:30 a.m.

Sponsored by Thomas Hospital and Wells Fargo Bank and follows a scenic course along the bay and through neighborhoods of Fairhope. Part of the many festivities that fill the town during the annual Arts & Crafts Festival, the run signals a rite of spring. The Spring Fever Chase benefits local schools and children’s fitness programs.

Program

There are many ways Arts & Crafts Festival participants are honored, including the Awards Dinner, where more than $14,500 in prize money is given to the best of the best. However, the best honor they receive is when visitors to the festival purchase their works.

The Patron Award Program allows businesses or individuals to further honor their favorite artists and craftsmen by committing to purchasing at least $100 worth of arts or crafts from one vendor.

When those patrons visit the festival, they will drop by the Chamber office in Fairhope and pick up a ribbon to be placed on their chosen vendor’s booth and a placard bearing their own name or the name of a business, which is also be placed at the vendor’s booth. Patrons may purchase works from any vendor they choose. All the money goes directly to the artist. When more patrons commit, more money is guaranteed to be spent at the festival.

“Each year we have about 50 patrons who commit to purchase $100 worth of work,” said Liz Roberts, director of Tourism and Special Events for the ESCoC. “It is such a wonderful way to honor our participant’s talents. The only cost involved is the purchase of the works, which becomes the property of the patron.”

Bike Valet A bicycle valet station will be available at this year’s Fairhope Arts & Craft Festival. This free service is offered to any cyclist who wants to visit the festival by bike. The City of Fairhope’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and the Baldwin County Trailblazers are working together to organize this free and secure bicycle parking area.

The Bike Valet area will be located adjacent to the handicapped parking area off North Bancroft Street and behind the Fairhope Museum.

Volunteers will check in and oversee the bicycle parking area for the festival weekend. Both groups hope the valet station will offer visitors a safe and convenient place to keep their bikes while they enjoy the festival.

The station will be open each day of the festival during normal festival hours. Volunteers that are interested in helping manage the station are encouraged to contact the Trailblazers at slowbicyclesocietyes@gmail.com.

Most visitors know that unless they arrive early in the morning, they won’t find a parking spot and may find themselves driving up and down narrow streets throughout the quaint neighborhoods.

In an effort to ensure smooth traffic flow and alleviate parking problems, the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce recommends festival goers utilize the shuttle service provided by BRATS (Baldwin Rural Area Transportation System). The shuttle will cost $2 each way.

Free parking will be provided at several convenient locations near the downtown Fairhope area. Plantation Pointe Shopping Center, Ecor Rouge Place and Eastern Shore Village Center will offer parking. All of the parking locations are less than a five minute ride.

The City of Fairhope is providing handicapped spaces in the parking lot behind Julwin’s restaurant. Once those are filled, it is recommended that handicapped drivers park and ride the shuttle services.

The festival hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and the shuttle service will continue to operate until most visitors are out of the area.

Tommy Cain, a fourth generation grocery store owner, started his career as a bag boy at 15 years old.
