Robby Harman Sordam (Vocals) Composer and vocalist Robby Harman Sordam, born in Amsterdam to a Dutch mother and Surinamese father, started at the age of 5 with accordion lessons; at 12 he switched to trumpet; at 18 to guitar; at 22 to piano. During his high school period he formed the guitar-duo RoGuill together with Guilly Koster (host of the National Tv-Talkshows ‘Bij Lobith’ en ‘Massiv’). Together with Koster he composed and performed the music in 1975 for the music-theaterplay ‘Faja Siton’ which was performed in both the Netherlands and Surinam. As vocalist Robby participated in various ensembles and projects, a.o. Farawee, FraFra Sound, Kaseko Revisited, Odo Switi no Todo, the theater tour Mathurin Meets Music , the FraFra Big Band & Vocals tour and the IKO Kaseko Crossover Concert with the Metropole Orchestra. For a while now Robby Harman has been working on an original musical concept: vocal swing-ballads and improvised music with Afro-Caribbean influences. Harman arranges lyrical Pop-melodies and classical harmonies from the Afro-Surinamese traditions according to an existing Jazz-approach with room for schematic improvisations. The result is crossover music where musicians improvise on self-written compositions with Caribbean themes, European Pop-influences, Rock, North-American swing and African polyrhythmic traditions.
