Welcome to one of the Caribbean's utopia, The University of the West Indies, where dreams come to life, and aspiring men and women are molded into legends of this world. Lots of experiences await you, both inside and outside of school. Don't be afraid to be yourself, and if you're scared about trotting this path of your life, remember, we're all a family here and we'll help you wherever possible. Hone your passion, develop your talents, and feed your determination, because those traits will be very instrumental in where you end up later in life. By the way, if you're still unsure of what you actually want to be, or what you want out of life, remember that maybe sometimes the journey isn't so much about becoming anything. Maybe it's about un-becoming everything that isn't really you; so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place.

It is indeed my pleasure to warmly welcome you to The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Today you begin a journey that will define the rest of your lives. This opportunity affords you access to administrative, technical and academic support, information and the tools with which to explore it. Talk with your lecturers, attend all your classes, read widely, formulate opinions and debate them actively. You are here, not just for the garnering of knowledge, but for the the training of the mind for innovation, creativity and the positive transformation of your lives and of the lives of your countrymen, the Caribbean Region and indeed of the world. Remain focused and resolute as you set increasingly higher goals for yourself, consistently surpassing them in your journey towards excellence. Your day to day experience promises to be dynamic, stimulating and rewarding. No two days will be exactly the same. There will be the constant quest for improvement, the reality of looming deadlines, the reward of innovative solutions and completed tasks, and the thrill of the next new challenge. Embrace these moments as they will define the quality of your sojourn. Finally, the UWI Guild's Motto, "Together We Can Make It Happen", is particularly applicable for us all this year, it being your first year as a student of The University of the West Indies and my first year as the Principal of the Mona Campus. I look forward to the year as we both play our parts together, towards making great things happen.
President's Message Dear Baby Pelican, In writing the President's greeting, it is expected that I will congratulate you on a successful matriculation to the premier university in the Caribbean that is also ranked among the top 5% of universities in the world. However, I prefer to tell you what I wish someone told me in my first year. Firstly, no one truly cares about your CSEC or CAPE passes. Approximately 5000+ first year students will enter this space with you and will be regarded as the same; an ID number. It therefore means you must seek to find your own niche on the campus, whether it be through the Guild Council or other leadership roles, as a debator or athlete for the university or any other involvement in the myriad clubs and societies available. But while you get involved there must be a balance. The 3. 6 GPA and above that is required for a first class honours degree is possible for all of us but it comes through personal responsibility. No one will command you to leave your room and attend class or to complete assignments or study. No one, especially the lecturers/tutors, will demand that you create a relationship with them and you may very well complete your degree as average, unknown and forgotten. Your forefathers fought for this space that you currently own and even though you will struggle with issues at SAS and the course/lecturer you do not like or the less than desirable group members and the expenses to be a university student you, must push beyond these challenges and claim the space. You will claim it by reading for your degree, making and maintaining friendships that will be crucial to both your mental health and social development while seeking out internships and exchange programmes along with other ways to develop holistically. You will also seek opportunities external to campus that include employment, volunteerism/advocacy and mentors hip, and if you are spiritual, maintain a close relationship with your God. I moved unto the university with two bath pans, $25,000 to pay my hall fee des posit and no clue how to fund my tuition or become the "ideal UWI graduate". Today, I am the Guild President with the responsibility for 20,000 students writing a letter to you. My story however is not uncommon, and if the hundreds of others can do it - so can you! Greetings new Pelicans! It is with the utmost enthusiasm that I welcome you to the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. Notably, your choice to be a part of this noble institution not only represents your commitment to excellence, but your willingness to actualise into that "light shining from the west." Indeed, you are now a member of a revered academic community and, easily, it aligns with the idea of what you will consider the most important stage of your life. It will if nothing else, underscore lessons that will guide your future. Admittedly, this period of life will be met with a lot of caution and trust me, it is fine. However, it is important that an equal measure of courage be demonstrated so as to embrace this new challenge. Your journey will never be perfect - it will always be a 'cereal bowl' of mixed emotions and varied experiences. Nonetheless, once you believe in yourself and there is passion then you can always achieve greatness. May your journey be one filled with success, memorable experiences and growth. Count it a privilege to join this league of dynamic young people here at The UWI. By matriculating to this institution, you have been given an opportunity to walk in the footsteps of many civic leaders and great men and women who have made indelible contributions ,ationally, regionally and globally. Some of you may be the first in your family to attend university. Conversely, some of you may come from a long line of UWI Alumni. Whatever the case, you now have an opportunity to write your own story here at The UWI. At this moment, the playing field has been levelled and you have been blessed with a fresh start - a ticket to success. You will come to realize that your sojourn here is not solely to attain academic success. Instead, you will be immersed in traditions that allow for cultivation of leadership and interpersonal skills and also foster healthy exchange of culture and philosophies. The years you will spend here will help to mould and define your character. In this space, you will learn more about yourself and others, so never be afraid to GROW and CHANGE. Remember The UWI is your place to shine so grab every opportunity to build a better you. I won't fool you all into thinking this journey will be blissful like having Devon House Ice Cream on a Sunday. There will definitely be sweet moments when you feel as if nothing can go wrong and then there will come times when you feel as though your ice cream just fell off the cone. In these moments of failure and despair remember that you have people cheering you on, people who are willing to help. The Guild will be one of those primary cheerleaders who will advocate for you as best as we can so you can have a rich UWI experience. Despite our help, the ball is still in your court and so I charge you to go fourth with utmost courage and determination. I implore you to be focused, open minded and responsible as you begin the experience of a lifetime. Take heed to the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson and go where there is no path and leave a trail. Carve out your success, leave your legacy, take nothing for granted, make friends, study hard but remember to have fun. Welcome to the family new Pelicans. The word is love. Enjoy!

Congratulations on having matriculated into the University of the West Indies, Mona; be open to all that comes with that. You have made this decision with something in mind: a career, the desire for a certain experience, among other things - in all this, I ask you to be cognizant of the changing tides that are so very frequent on our shores. Your major may change, your experience may be skewed for whatever reason, and you probably will realize that university life is nothing you thought it to be. Persevere, for that is what is expected of the distinctive UWI Graduate - PERSEVERANCE. Now, to digress from psuedo-academic advising, Mona is really an EXPERIENCE. There are so many events to witness and to bring to life - from Freshers' Cocktail to Homecoming to UWI Carnival. There are moments of respite all throughout the year allowing you to unwind and breathe through it all. Nevertheless, as we are to be excellent on the Ring Road, we are to excel in our respective disciplines. You have options too: SPEND A SEMESTER or two at the Western Jamaica Campus, located in the tourism capital of Jamaica. Visit us in Montego Bay, for the sun, sand and sea, what more could you need to lyme and read for your degree? Here at WJC we boldly manifest our university's motto: Oriens Ex Occidente Lux - A Light Rising From The West. Remember, and I cannot stress this enough, that we are all Pelicans hailing from The UWI, Mona, so whatever affiliations or loyalties to a Faculty, Hall ... or Campus that we might have must not trump that predominant truth. Always trust, too, that this college journey will open many doors for you and be fertilizer to your potential. All the very best in everything! On the behalf of the Office of the Guild of Students, I extend a hearty welcome to you and offer congratulations on your matriculation into The University of the West Indies. We stand ready to provide guidance and assistance when called upon. Though my responsibilities as the Guild Manager requires that I provide direct oversight to the Guild Council, the services of my office are extended to all students within the university community. The services offered range from the booking of the Student Union facilities to simply helping you to find solutions to problems encountered as you transition into rniversity life. I strongly recommend that you capitalize on all opportunities provided for you to become involved in co-curricular activities. Such involvement can aid in your interpersonal development, the growth of your network as an individual, and ultimately assist with your development into the ideal UWI graduate. That being said, it is important to note that your journey throughout university will be marked by both successes and challenges. I use this opportunity to encourage you to use the challenges encountered to build your character and the successes achieved to serve as motivation in achieving greater successes. THE HISTORY OF THE GUILD OF STUDENTS FORMATION The Guild, formed in 1951, operated then as separate folds - Guild of Undergraduates and Guild of Graduates before combining in 1990 to create the Guild of Students.
EMBLEM irhe emblem of the Guild of Students was made public on ili Aursday, September 26, 1997 and has affixed on the lower Rer:iphery of the image its motto, "Together We Can Make It Happen." Of note, the 'blue' in the background is the Caribbean Sea which unites us as a region and the 'Caribbean Sun,' which signifies a guiding light of inspiration for today's aspiring leaders. Also, the 'stairs' indicate the climb to another level of success, 'mortarboard' crowns the success from undergraduate to 'graduate level and the 'golden chain' represents the friendship that binds us together as students.
STRUCTURE : ,,~ The Mona Guild of Students is led by a 45-member student government body called the Guild Council which includes representatives from the halls of residence, commuting populace, Western Jamaica Campus and United Theological College of the West Indies. This contingent is divided into three (3) main groups namely the Executive, Representative and Hall Chairperson cohorts.
ACHIEVEMENTS The Guild Council has procured notable multi-level achievements in the areas of education, economics, politics and regionalism while in the same breath, contributing to the social and cultural advancements of the university community.

DID YOU KNOW? Hello Freshets! Welcome to the University of the West Indies, where we strive to unearth all potentials and most warming, congratulations on your matriculation. You are challenged and graced with another chapter in the book of life, a new slate to carve your present and future endeavors. This experience promises to be a transforming and fulfilling one. So as you traverse through this new phase let me be the cliche person to remind you of a particular cliche phrase "YOU ARE HERE TO READ FOR YOUR DEGREE", that first and everything else after. It is paramount that you put your best foot forward and become the best version of yourself. Whilst you are the best version of yourself we also want you to be the best ambassador to our noble institution. Therefore here are some facts 'UFI' know and 'UWI Know'! Did you know??
1. Our university has been recently ranked in the top 5% of the best universities in the world?
2.lt is the largest most longstanding higher education provider for the commonwealth Caribbean? 3.lt gain independent university status in 1962? 4. It was first called the University College of the West Indies? 5.The faculty of Medical Science was the first faculty? 6.We have a museum that catalog and exhibits our history? 7. We host approximately 36,000 students across all four campuses? 8. Our motto is Latin? 9.We recently added music studies in the faculty of Humanities and Education 10. Wi place pretty?
UWI FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE We heard the testimonials, the successes, that the top performers each year were persons who participated in the First Year Experience (FYE) programme. But there remained scepticism. We were already in 'First Year', and we obviously would 'experience' each day. So, what is the programme's significance? And for those who previously heard of FYE, it was assumed to be a set of inconsistent trips and workshops. For that first FYE gathering, most of us freshers were encouraged by one word: refreshments. However, the goose bumps that the speakers and performers provoked proved far more valuable. The forward-thinking and self-assurance that each exuded was ultimately what hooked many of us.
From financial management sessions and sexual health forums, to therapeutic painting, academic planning, masquerades and scavenger hunts, the experience was wholesome beyond prediction. The purpose driven FYE facilitators and insightful weekly guests really envisioned our best interests and executed with interactivity at the core. Considering the mental stimulation, grooming of habits, and holistic development that us First Years received, the FYE programme was a compass that navigated the sometimes-turbulent waters of our nine-month journey thus far. Although a few had aborted the mission prematurely, the dedicated attendees appreciated the priceless benefits. Feeble sails were reinvented into wings. As an incoming fresher, you are currently on the runway of University, transitioning to the rest of your life. The First Year Experience shall engender an attitude that inspires you to adjust your gear and take flight. Done By - Cedella Mckie
Freshers' Events- These are the first set of events slated under the CEAC portfolio targeted to our Freshers'. These include Freshers' Concert, Freshers' Cocktail and Freshers' Fete. Integration Thursdays - Lyme that happens on a given Thursday at the Students' Union which allows students' to de-stress, relax and pre-game for the weekend.
Runci Rules - Rund Rules has pride itself on being one of the best Block Lymes on the Campus. After rebranding itself from Ruption, Rund Rules has left an impact on its patrons with its rich frat experience and energy.
Wet Fete - Wet fete is block b butchers of Taylor hall annual water party. It is the only water party on campus and not only have it grown over the years but it as continue to lead the pack in providing a holistic experience for our patrons each year.
Mask-A-Raid - Mask-A-Raid, heading into its thirteenth staging, has continued its trend of being a premiere event on the university campus. Under the theme, "Midnight Fantasies," this year Mask-A-Raid is bound to provide you with an experience you will never forget.
SOHO - THE UWI Mona food inclusive brunch party. This year SOHO will be approaching it's third staging and it promises to be a DON'T MISS EVENT!
Pop Up Lyme - George Alleyne Pop Up Lyme .The party that you never know when it's coming, but when it does, it will blow your expectations through the roof.
Open Ear - Open Ear is a cultural concert which serves as a salute to Jamaican music. In the past Open Ear has featured artists like: Sevana, Romain Virgo, Bounty Ki Ila and Beenie Man. The theme of this year's staging is Open Ear: Ultra Clash which is set up to be a battle between Jamaica's two main music forms: Reggae and Dancehall and it promises to be a must-attend event.
Culturama - Irvine Hall since 1966 has hosted the biggest cultural extravaganza on the UWI, Mona campus 'Culturama'. The week long activities includes performances, competitions and both culinary and artistic displays. Come see which halls, island associations or block will dominate this year.
Carnival - The most exciting period of the school year is in March because of Carnival. The Carnival season kicks of with a Band launch in February, then in March there's the Weekend starting from Thursday: Launch Party, Friday: Carnival Jouvert, Saturday:Carnival Ring Road &. After Party, ending on Sunday with a beach party at Sugarman Beach.

A.Z PRESTON HALL "Preston a di bes one if yuh neva guess Preston then yuh guess wrong!" "There are only two halls on campus, assembly hall and us." These lines from our infamous cheers speaks sumptuously of the most prestigious and noble hall, The AZ Preston Hall. Established in 1995 and named after former Vice Chancellor, Aston Zachariah Preston, the Aston Preston Hall is home of some 332 residents. Preston hall attracts students with an array of interest in sports, undying love and appreciation of opulent culture, prolific academic standards, unrelenting passion for the creative arts and many more. Unlike other places in which you could reside, Preston Hall was sponsored by the European Union and boasts thirteen clusters, each sponsored by a respective member country of the Union. We have grown to be one of the most recognizable and is known as "Sandals Mona", "the Cultural Mecca" and "the Vybiest Hall." Amidst all the accolades attached to our name, we here pride Preston as a home and we are a family that bleeds one purple blood. However, our noticeable and notable purple isn't just for showcase, but it represents wisdom, dignity and determination of noble students whom together play one band, and create one resounding sound whilst forever, "In Relentless Pursuit of Excellence."

Our Hall colours - red, black and silver - is reflective of our passion and strength to dominate this modern environment in which we hunt for success. It is for this reason the Wolf Pack effortlessly dominates every area )f student life: leadership, sports, the arts, and most importantly, academics! Let us warn you that University is by no means a stroll in the park. There is much learning and unlearning, discovering, and rediscovering that will punctuate your experience here. But we know that you will make the right choices, as you have started on the right footing by opting to pursue a tertiary education. GEORGE ALLEYNE HALL Greetings Freshers. Welcome to the George Alleyne Hall, home of the Panthers! As a first year student, university can be quite an overwhelming experience, especially living on a hall of residence. The biggest challenge you will face on hall is having your independence, your roof, your rules!! Just kidding, the point is the responsibility that comes with living on your own is tremendous. Hall life is a wonderful experience and you forge relationships that will last a life time. The keys to navigating your time on hall are; 1) Come prepared with all essentials 2) Manage your time 3) Learn to share and respect living in a communal space 4) Be your brother's keeper. On George Alleyne Hall, we are a family and we look out for each other. Panthers are known to be on their own, but not this pride, sticking together will get you through the jungle known as The University of The West Indies!
IRVINE HALL "A dream doesn't become reality through magic, it takes
sweat, determination and hard work." - Colin Powell. It is an honour for me to share a message about the very first hall built on the UWI Campus, Irvine Hall, the hall of culture, pride and vibes. Irvine Hall is named after its first warden, Sir James Irvine, who was the chairman of the committee which recommended the founding of the University. Bearing our motto, "Know Thyself", it was founded in 1950, and since the inception, has provided a unique living experience. Several trailblazers has passed through this prestigious hall, such as, The Honorable Peter Phillips (current leader of opposition), The Honorable Keith Rowley and Jamaican champion in field events, Fredrick Dacres. You have already, undoubtedly, displayed a zeal for excellence for choosing to reside on this incredible hall. Here on Irvine, the vine and the vibes are synonymous. That came from the halls original setup where all blocks branched off a single spine, representing the vine, and the vibes speaks for itself. Residing on this hall allowed me to gain greater exposure and undertake experiences that enhanced my personal growth and development.

As phoenix we blaze our own trail and create our unique path across the UWI landscape. Our teal and gold has shone brightly since our naming in 2016 wherever we travel just like our spirit. WE embody a special flame that burns throughout the campus space. Living on this hall, the home of the phoenix is your opportunity for so much growth and new experiences. I implore you all to take every opportunity to expand yourself as much as possible. Named in honour of the courageous Jamaican nursing pioneer, Mary Jane Grant Seacole, the Mary Seacole Hall was built in 1957 to meet the demand for housing accommodation for an increasing female student population at the University of the West Indies, Mona. The hall boasts a rich legacy of advancing women's growth and development and has the honour of being the only sorority on the UWI Mona campus housing over 250 women from Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. Our programmatic agenda exposes the women to a host of personal and professional development sessions including -The Leadership Academy, the annual Elect-Her Women's Leadership Training Workshop, The First Year Experience Programme, UBUNTU Programme (Volunteerism and Outreach), The I'm Glad I'm a Girl Foundation and numerous clubs and societies. Its 'So Hard to be a Seacolite, But So Good'! Black and White is always right!

REX NETTLEFORD HALL It is with great pleasure that we extend a warm welcome to all new students to the University of the West Indies. Without any doubts, you are embarking on a journey that will lead to exposure to multiple opportunities for holistic development. Needless to say, undertaking this journey to pursue a tertiary education is a big step and so it is our hope that you will take the necessary measures to ensure that your tenure here will be a fulfilling and successful one. Some of these measures include striking the right balance between academic pursuit and your social involvements; both of which are very important. Get as involved as you possibly can while being here but never let it be to your own detriment. Also, ensure that you do not take for granted the many avenues for assistance that are available if you are ever in need. Speak to your lecturers regularly and use up office hours whenever you need to. Surround yourself with individuals who have your best interest at heart. Use the resources that the Library has available and do not forget to study, study, study! All the best in your tenure here at the University of the West Indies. It is our hope that hall your hopes and desires will be achieved.
TAYLOR HALL Jesse Owens once said, we all have dreams but inorder to make dreams turn into reality, it requires a vast amount of determination, dedication, self- discipline and effort. I wish to extend my sincerest congratulations to you for matriculating to the greatest tertiary level institution in Jamaica, the University oft e West Indies. For those who have been given the opportunity of residing on the most prestige hall on campus, Taylor Hall, cherish this opportunity. Taylor hall has over the past six decades cemented its name in history as the "movers and shakers" of the campus creating leaders, innovators and role models. We know it's a daunting time for any fresher but just know, your seniors have your back! We are never too busy or too far away to assist you with any problems you have. Always remember to pace yourself and only do what you can handle. Don't watch no crowd and follow nobody! Social Sciences Firstly I would like to congratulate you on being accepted to the University of the West Indies, Mona and a special welcome to the members of the only nation on campus, the Faculty of Social Sciences. This step in your journey is one that will require your utmost effort and your continued focus to the task at hand. Distractions will come but always remember your purpose and always remember the goals you have set. I encourage you to also strive for excellence, do not be average when you were designed to be great. Strive to be better than average and your rewards will be better than average. Complete your degree in the allotted time and take no courses for granted. An extra year, that's an expense i think all students should fear. Apart from academia however, try to be as involved as you can. Too many students pass through the university and leave just as they came without much growth. Therefore I implore you to Join a club, make friends, play some dominoes and enjoy your Thursday night at integration and become involved with hall activities. To the fresher's especially, this is the year that sets the pace and standard for your university life. Try to make some lasting memories. See that person you sit beside in class, talk to them, they will be there to guide and help you when you need the help. Work towards your fitness goals, we have the facility to help you. Sport The journey of a thousand miles begins with just one footstep. Firstly, me start off by saying to all new students Congratulations and welcome to the Faculty of Sports. Your university experience has just begun. The faculty and its committee are elated in having you as our newest addition to the family. For some who may not know, the Sports Faculty is the newest member to the UWI family, and it is an honour to be selected as the first official faculty representative. For this school year 2019/2020, My committee and I are very enthused in getting the faculty the recognition it needs as well as being very involved in events other than sports, with the help from the Guild's Council we will be successful. We are looking forward to collaborating with other faculties by not only strengthening our faculty relationships but also promote unity and unison amongst us. For our objectives to be achieved we the faculty must work as one and that is where you our newest member comes in. Throughout the school year, we will be having several activities. One major objective the committee has for this school year is to have school tours in order to spread the awareness of the new faculty in the surrounding community. Student- athletes in the school systems are often frowned upon but with these school tours we would be able to reach out to these athletes/sport lovers and introduce them to the course we offer, provide guidance for their career paths while still being heavily involved in sports. Being an athlete myself, along with a committee consisting of athletes, the goal is to give tips on time management, studying as well as setting up tutoring sessions which would increase number of passes in the faculty. We are also trying to set up a faculty week to spread awareness to the university students about the faculty and its courses. With your help we look forward in having a promising school year. Therefore, my committee and I are looking forward in meeting and conversing with all of you. We wish you nothing but the best. Tips as a commuter: Try not to choose early morning classes, worst if you are traveling to school from far as.The journey to school can be filled with traffic and uncontrolled hindrances. Choosing a class later in the evening gives you more time.
Also do not choose classes that are late in the night, because after certain hours transportation is scarce and walking from campus late in the night is very unsafe.

6) Know when to stop. Make time to relax. This is very important and is just as essential as understanding a concept taught in class. Take care of your well-being emotional, physically, spiritually, mentally and social. Balance is essential.

WUNDER KRAFTS (@ @WU nderkrafts) Wunder Krafts is a handmade business started in the summer of 2017 by Tishauna Green. Its sole purpose was to provide a source of income for tuition payments and bill payments, but it soon became a hit among the students on campus. Wunder Krafts specializes in the production of neckaces, bracelets, keyrings, earrings and anklets cattered to both male and female. These are made from glass, clay, resin, stainless steel chain, leather etc. According to Tishauna, "Starting Wunder Krafts was the best decision I made since coming to UWI. It served as an escape from the stress of school and the stress of life."
ON TIME CHICKEN (@@ontimechicken) Phillip' Season' Watson, an academic scholarship student that majors in Accounting, has a love for well seasoned and prepared food, so he channelled this love for food to start his business, On Time Chicken. According to Phiilip, "As a student myself, I realized that there was a niche for tasty home cooked meals and efficient food delivery as the rigours of university and everyday life can be quite demanding and we're often left with no time to cook a meal for ourselves." With Chef Andrew' Pong' Findlay turning up the heat in the kitchen, On Time Chicken aims to provide to their loyal customers a colourful array of Jamaican dishes such as steamed fish, stewed pork, curried chicken and goat, barbi- fried chicken, fried chicken; with roti, seasoned wedges,fries, rice and peas, roti and festival as sides.On Time Chicken firmly believes in dedication, hard work and community involvement. Not only do they pride themselves on their tempting food, but also their love for growth.
DJ NOi (@ @deejaynoi) Jade "Dj Noi" Francis is a third year Actuarial Science student who not only seeks to excel in school but also to provide musical entertainment of the highest standard. Disc Jockey Noi, a Christian DJ, aims to remove the stereotype attached to gospel music and religious events by giving patrons a wonderful and unique experience. He started out compiling songs on CDs for his personal use but after a while his love for music and his curiosity led him to find and utilize Virtual Dj, a mixing program. Fast forwarding a few years later, the name Noi can be heard not just echoing throughout Gospel Events but on Local and Regional Radio Stations, Sports Days, Track Meets, Expos and Health Fairs. According to him, "My most memorable moment so far was when I was featured on Weekend Smile, TVJ, on April 20, 2019."
Everyone has to start somewhere. I know it may be easy to let your circumstances define you, but there is strength in overcoming the things in life you didn't really choose. Find your passion, develop it, and soon enough, you'll create a wave of positivity that no one can stop.

Get to know a little bit more about Allison Hey Allison. What's your current year and major?
Oh, thats nice. Are you involved in any co-curricular activities on campus?
During the competition, I was faced with quite a number of adversities, you know, the usual trying to juggle school work and other activities. One of my main motivations to stick to the task I had ahead was my mother. That woman is the total woman epitomized. Her strength is unmatched. Having been a breast cancer surviver for 10 years, she recently became ill again with further medical challenges. I had to juggle being with my mom when I could and being at rehearsals, yet still, I was very determined and dedicated. I knew what I wanted and I knew I had to make my mom proud. She has been a tower of strength for me throughout and it would be very disappointing not giving my all and my very best. You are a very strong woman. What does winning this competition mean for you? And what's next?
Okay kool. So what pushed you to enter Miss UWI? Was it you first year pagent?
No it wasn't. This was actually my third pagent. Ever since I applied for the University of the West Indies, it was a dream of mine. I knew that this was something that I not only wanted to doo, but I had to do. I love pageantry and will support any avenue that gives myself along many other beautiful ladies the opportunity to showcase what it really means to be beautiful and powerful. Well said. What challenges did you face during the competition?
Thank you. I plan to be very visible on the Mona campus, making my presence known in the different clubs and societies and also partnering with cooperate Jamaica's to get projects and plans up and running. I also see myself entering Miss Jamaica. Just like my island, Mi likle but mi talawah! The future is bright. I also would love to get my charity initiative, "We survive Jamaica", off the ground. It's aimed at sensitizing and supporting those directly and indirectly affected by cancer.
Ohh. We Survive Jamaica sounds like a brilliant idea. I hope everything works out in your favor.

1. Get involved be active, join clubs and societies and be consistent in your attendance and participation. Where there is a seminar/forum being held on campus about a topic your interested in be sure to attend. University is a great space for networking through all the activities. Don't waste that opportunity!
2.Never put off for tomorrow what you can do today.
3.Assignment first party later, complete assignments in small portions. Completing your assignments in bulk can be too much of task. 4. WALK WID YUH I.D ! 5. Money Management is key. Cook ... and if you don't know how to cook, learn. Not everything you see, you should buy.
6. You'll hear that sleep is just a concept. Don't believe that, sleep is vital to your wellbeing and in being a productive student. Get those Zs' so you can attain the high As. 7. Commuters, you have an association .The commuting students committee is there for you. Use them. a.You see that deadline 10 weeks from now? Yea man it same one. Don't put it off!!! Get on it right a way and ask questions. 9. There is no Good health without good mental health, There are councilors at the health centre you can talk to, talk to friends or family. Take time out for you. 10. Your now a student of the University of the West Indies, you are a light rising from the West. Embrace the university experience and try something new, unlock your great potential.
Alcohol Poisoning What is this? Alcohol poisoning is very serious and sometimes can be fatal. Consequence of drinking large amounts of alcohol in a short period of time. Also, drinking too much too quickly can affect your breathing, heart rate, body temperature and gag reflex and potentially lead to :oma and death.
What are the symptoms of Alcohol poisoning? Alcohol poisoning signs and symptoms include: 1. Confusion 2.Vomiting 3. Seizures 4. Slow breathing ( less than 8 breathes in a minute) 5. Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths) 6. Blue-tinged or pale skin 7. Low body temperature (hypothermia) 8. Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened
Complications with Drinking too much
What is the Level Di Liquor Campaign ? The campaign is aimed at sensitizing and educating our youth population on the numerous effects associated with being inebriated. The campaign also seeks to inform the youth to make wise and informed decisions when it comes to alcohol intake and ways we can encourage them to reduce alcohol consumption.
Severe complications can result from food poisoning, including: 1. Choking. Alcohol may cause vomiting because it depresses your gag reflex, this increases the risk of choking on vomit if you've passed out. 2. Stopping breathing. Accidentally inhaling vomit into your lungs can lead to a dangerous or fatal interruption of breathing (asphyxiation).
Tips for preventing drunkenness 1. Have a wholesome meal before consuming any alcoholic beverage -Eat whole foods such as chicken as this will help to slow the pace at which you will get drunk and if you do get hangovers.
3. Severe dehydration. Vomiting can result in severe dehydration, leading to dangerously low blood pressure and fast heart rate. 4. Seizures. Your blood sugar level may drop low enough to cause seizures.
2. Pace yourself when drinking - Try to resist joining in on round after round. Remember, drinking is a marathon, not a race!
5. Hypothermia. Your body temperature may drop so low that it leads to cardiac arrest.
3. Stay away from sugary chasers! - Combining alcohol with low calorie mixers gets into your bloodstream as fast as drinking a shot.
6. Irregular Heartbeat. Alcohol poisoning can cause the heart to beat irregularly or even stop.
3. Stay Hydrated. - Don't wait until your body signals that you're dehydrated to start downing glasses of H20.
7. Brain Damage. Heavy drinking may cause irreversible brain damage. 8. Death. Anyone of the aforementioned issues can lead to death.
4. Practice to say "no" to more drinks. - Instead of accepting drinks, just say, no thanks, and change the conversation.

MARCOMM (n) The acronym for the Office of Marketing, Recruitment and Communications. Mona Bowl/Bowl (n) The centre of sporting activities on campus where the cricket pitch, football fields, jogging trails as well as the netball, basketball and tennis courts are located. The gynamsium and pool are also found in this vicinity.
OSSD (n) The acronym for the Office of Student Services and Development. OurVLE (n) Our Virtual Learning Environment is the online academic support system for university students.
All-nighter (n) A term used when studying for the entire night. Beat (v) Studying for long hours or all night Beat Food (n) High-energy, low-nutrition foods that require little or no preparation. These come in handy during the Beat Season. Beat Season (n) The season for studying; usually starts once the first draft of the exam timetable is published. Fresher (n) The name given to a new student until official induction into his or her hall. Guild Council (n) The student body government of 41 Councillors that provides representation and manages the affairs of the Guild of Students.
Ringroad (n) A large roundabout located in the centre of the campus. Traffic flows around the ringroad in one direction. The administrative buildings are situated in the centre with the faculties of Social Sciences and Humanities and Education and the main library on the periphery. On the outskirts are the other faculties, eateries and some halls of residence. SAS (n) 1 An acronym for student administrative system, where students can go online and register for classes, view their transcript, request overrides etc. 2A physical office.
SSDM (n) An abbreviation for the Student Services and Development Manager. Union (n) The informal term given to the hub of the campus (the Students' Union); the official home of the Guild of Students. It houses the office of the guild of students, a weightroom/gym, a supermarket, restaurants and other stores. It is also the venue of many parties and events organized by the Guild Council, including the Integration Thursdays series.
