Jazz Festival
Student Combos Join us for the Guildhall summer Jazz Festival, when the intimate Milton Court Studio Theatre transforms into a jazz club featuring some of the most celebrated artists on the UK jazz scene. Talented Guildhall jazz musicians showcase their work in combos led by Guildhall professors during the day, before evening concerts offer performances from a spectacular line up of special guests including Cleveland Watkiss, Laura Jurd and Nikki Iles.

Beasts of London Step into an immersive tour through London’s history, narrated by the animals who once lived here.
Inspired by objects in the Museum of London’s collection and created in partnership with Guildhall School, this show explores the fascinating role animals have played in shaping the capital. Be guided through time, and discover how creatures – from lions and elephants, to horses, rats and pigeons – have shaped the city and its beastly history. Beasts of London is a fully interactive digital installation using video projection mapping created by Guildhall Video Design for Live Performance artists. Celebrities and Guildhall actors will voice characters, the School’s production artists are designing the experience and its composers are creating the musical soundtrack. Festival of Classical Improvisation Guildhall School’s Centre for Creative Performance and Classical Improvisation, led by Professor David Dolan, presents the first international festival celebrating the revival of Classical Improvisation in Western art-music performance. Keys, Bone and Bellows Formed by trombonist John Kenny, organist Bert Mooiman and pianist David Dolan in 2015, Keys, Bone and Bellows is a trio of a kind you are not likely to have heard before. Extemporising and mindreading, they will navigate through a variety of musical styles, exchanging roles between leading and following, and exploring the full power and palette of colours of Milton Court Concert Hall’s organ. Guildhall School’s award-winning Opera department presents a double bill of early operatic works exploring romantic love: pursuit and passion, happiness and heartbreak. Handel’s pastoral cantata, full of sparkling arias, was commissioned by Rome’s Academy of Arcadia when the composer was just 22, and follows Aminta on his campaign to woo the nymph, Fillide. The theme of Cupid’s arrow also runs through John Blow’s Venus and Adonis, composed 25 years earlier for the court of King Charles II and considered by many to be the earliest known English opera. Guildhall is proud to present Merrily We Roll Along, the School’s first production of the musical since giving its 1983 European premiere. Set in New York, the story follows the lives of a successful but disillusioned composer and his two estranged friends in reverse chronology, with the clock ticking backwards from 1976 to 1957. A brilliantly melodic score coupled with Sondheim’s sharp and piquant observations of human frailty makes for a witty and poignant story about the importance of staying true to one’s hopes and aspirations. Rachmaninov The Bells Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue Duke Ellington Sacred Concerts (excerpts) In the first concert of the academic year, new Guildhall School musicians perform together for the first time on the Barbican Hall stage in an eclectic programme of orchestral, choral and jazz works.

The evening begins with Rachmaninov’s epic choral symphony The Bells, featuring a new English translation by Stephen Plaice and showcasing the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Head of Opera Dominic Wheeler. For the second half of the concert Guildhall jazz musicians and singers take to the stage for a programme including a jazz orchestra arrangement of Gershwin’s famous Rhapsody in Blue, plus selections from Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts – described by the composer as “the most important thing I have ever done”.
