DEAR GUILD HALL COMMUNITY, We are thrilled to welcome you to Guild Hall’s 95th Season. Could our founder (and the “first lady of East Hampton”) Mary Woodhouse have imagined her vision lasting almost a century? This success is rooted in our founding purpose: to “create a finer type of citizenship” through the arts. You’ll see references to this inspiring statement throughout this summer’s programs, which are topical and aimed at bringing us together while expanding our circles.

Introducing the new Academy of the Arts President, Susan Stroman

It is with immense gratitude that I humbly accept the role of President of the Academy of the Arts at Guild Hall.

To be entrusted with this position by an institution so deeply woven into the fabric of the East End’s cultural life is an honor that I do not take lightly.

Guild Hall has long been a sanctuary for artists—painters, poets, playwrights, dancers, actors, musicians, and visionaries of all kinds. They are the life force of Guild Hall. At this year’s awards dinner, we celebrated 40 years of the Academy. Those honored at that first event were Alan Alda, Kurt Vonnegut, and Willem de Kooning. For decades, it has celebrated both the emerging and the established, giving voice to new talents and honoring those who have made indelible contributions to the arts.

As a director and choreographer, I have devoted my life to storytelling through movement, dance, and music. I’ve seen firsthand how the arts can transform lives, challenge perceptions, and bring us closer together.

The theater has been my home, my classroom, my laboratory, and my heart—and the lessons I’ve learned there have deepened my appreciation for institutions like Guild Hall, which embrace the full spectrum of artistic expression. At Guild Hall, I can see the best artwork, concerts, various styles of dance events, actors, comics, films, lectures on books and science, and live streams of famous theater and opera performances — no other theater in New York City can say the same. Guild Hall is exceptionally unique.

The world is changing rapidly, and the artist’s role has never been more vital. I am one of those people who believe that art can make a difference.

Through art, we must reflect on the world as it is and imagine it as it could be. Guild Hall gives us that opportunity— to dream together, to create together, and to share our stories with open hearts. I want to ensure the Guild Hall remains a vibrant hub for artistic excellence.

SUSAN STROMAN is a five-time Tony Award-winning director and choreographer.

Her work has been honored with Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel, and a record 6 Astaire Awards. She directed and choreographed THE PRODUCERS, winner of a record-making 12 Tony Awards, including Best Direction and Best Choreography. This year alone, she’s had two shows on Broadway — Delia Ephron’s play LEFT ON TENTH (produced by Daryl Roth) and the new musical SMASH, which opened to high praise in April and is a NY TIMES Critic’s Pick.

Artists often come to be associated with specific mediums or bodies of work when in fact their practices are much more expansive. Visual artists are frequently also musicians, designers, performers, filmmakers, writers, furniture makers, and so on. An encounter with one of the couches made by John Chamberlain, an artist best known for his metal sculptures, can be surprising, but the reality is that artists integrate their studio practices into all their life activities.

This presentation focuses on East End artists who have produced functional furniture as an extension of their creative practices—as a means of problem-solving, as an element of designed living, and as a way to foster social spaces. Functional Relationships: Artist-Made Furniture presents work by Scott Bluedorn, John Chamberlain, Liz Collins, Quentin Curry, Peter Dayton, Connie Fox, Kurt Gumaer, Mary Heilmann, Yung Jake, Donald Judd, Julian Schnabel, Karen Simon, Strong-Cuevas, Mark Wilson, Robert Wilson, Evan Yee, Nico Yektai, and Almond Zigmund.

In conjunction with Functional Relationships, Guild Hall commissioned two projects as further explorations of this common practice: Lindsay Morris’s photographs of interior spaces show how artists utilize furniture and shape their domestic environments, while Almond Zigmund’s installation Wading Room in the Marks Family Gallery South provides an artist-designed environment for activation through public use and a series of participatory programs.

Almond Zigmund makes large-scale site-responsive installations, discrete sculptures, works on paper, and paintings that explore the interplay between space, perception, and the built environment. Her work is characterized by crisp geometry, vivid colors, and intricate patterns that often suggest walls, barricades, and enclosures. Zigmund is also the creator of Almond Artist & Writers, family-style dinners at the restaurant Almond in Bridgehampton, where people come together to share and celebrate the artistic process; she has organized more than sixty-five gatherings to date. It is in this spirit of supporting the power of community engagement that Zigmund was invited to create a site-specific environment in conjunction with the exhibition Functional Relationships: Artist-Made Furniture.

Wading Room houses selections from Guild Hall’s permanent collection; functional, artist-made furniture for public use, including chairs designed by Almond Zigmund in collaboration with Justin Allen (Shepard Co Design); and other artist-made objects: lighting, chairs, rugs, stools, vessels, and sculpture. The artists Sabra Moon Elliot, Kurt Gumaer, Saskia Friedrich, Karen Simon, and Nico Yektai have also contributed to the space. A series of participatory public programs and collaborative projects will take place throughout the run of the exhibition.

Guests are encouraged to linger, lounge, and interact in this artist-designed environment and to visit often to explore its potential.

Marks Family Gallery North and Tito Spiga Exhibition Space

Mary Heilmann: Water Way will be the artist’s first large-scale solo presentation with an institution on the East End of Long Island, where she has been an integral part of the region’s creative community for decades. From California to New York City to Bridgehampton, Heilmann has prioritized living in close proximity to water, which has had a profound influence on her life and work. Whether as a direct image or referential title, water has long been a recurring theme throughout her practice.

Guild Hall is pleased to realize an exhibition that Heilmann has had a strong desire to stage—one that brings together over 40 works of a focused area of her output.

The exhibition includes works on paper, ceramics, and paintings spanning from the 1980s through the present.

Joel Mesler’s practice sheds light on universal themes by filtering them through autobiography, humor, self-deprecation, and surprising compositional juxtapositions. Mesler has explored the power of acceptance, allowing emotions—as well as the cultural forms in which they become entangled—to exist at the center of his projects. An artist, collector, and former art dealer, Mesler’s installation mimics his studio, office, and exhibition space, featuring work by a select group of his contemporaries.

The space will function as a gathering and meeting place where the artist will host office hours. Mesler’s office hours create a simultaneous performance and public program.

OFFICE HOURS: DURING MUSEUM OPEN HOURS, WEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY, 12-5 PM It’s a surprise! Joel Mesler will be “in and out of the office” throughout the exhibition. Stop by anytime during the museum’s open hours, and if Joel is “in office,” he practices an open-door policy. You’ll never know when he’ll magically appear!

SATURDAY, AUGUST 23, 12-5 PM 15-MINUTE SESSIONS $250 DONATION TO GUILD HALL Over the past 8 years, Joel Mesler has painted over a thousand portraits. Part performance, a hap-happyhappening, Mesler has created unique opportunities for guests and passersby to sit for a mini-portrait session at venues such as Independent Art, Levy Gorvy Dayan, The Mark Hotel, on a ferry, and even at artist Austyn Weiner’s wedding. You, too, could experience portrait painting with Mesler!

Good for all ages, but no farm animals are allowed this time, based on museum rules : )

HAMPTONS INSTITUTE CO-PRESENTED WITH THE COMMON GOOD

The Hamptons Institute (HI), established 2010, returns to Guild Hall this summer featuring leaders in their fields discussing ideas that shape our community and the world. The 2025 installment is guest-curated by Ellen Chesler, author and HI co-founder (with Guild Hall late Chair, Mickey Straus), and Patricia Duff, founder of the nonpartisan non-profit, The Common Good, dedicated to civic participation, civil dialogue, and finding solutions and common ground. Each evening will explore a single topic from the perspective of multiple professionals, followed by a Q&A.

GUARDRAILS ON DEMOCRACY MONDAY, JULY 7, 7 PM Norman Eisen, globally recognized authority on law, ethics and anti-corruption, and Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the ACLU, lead a panel discussion on the prosecutorial process and enforcing legal limits on the current Trump administration. Moderated by James D. Zirin, author, legal analyst, and television show host.

SNL: 50 YEARS OF AMERICAN SATIRE MONDAY, JULY 14, 7 PM Saturday Night Live has been responding to American politics for five decades lampooning Presidents from Jimmy Carter to Donald Trump. Susan Morrison, author of the bestselling book Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live and the articles editor of The New Yorker joins SNL special guests to talk about the longest-running and most relevant comedy show on television.

Stirring the Pot returns for the 15th consecutive year with a series of four insightful and entertaining talks. For the first session, New York Times food & wine writer Florence Fabricant will have a conversation with chef and restaurateur Andrew Carmellini, who has opened a collection of restaurants after making his name at the original Café Boulud. Marc Murphy, a chef and television personality, follows. Then we’ll welcome Christina Tosi, known for her uncommon confections and string of Milk Bars. The final guest will be Pete Wells, who was the chief restaurant critic for The New York Times for 12 years.

Marc Murphy, a Food Network personality and New York City chef and restaurateur, has trimmed his portfolio and now mainly cooks for private events and pop-up dinners in a space in Tribeca. He’s active in food-related philanthropy, lives in Manhattan with his family and also escapes to his beach house in Bridgehampton. A surfer, he once had a fish shack in Manhattan’s West Village he named Ditch Plains. He was born in Milan and now he’s making olive oil In Umbria, Italy with his brother, Paul, and guests will have the opportunity to purchase the olive oil after the program.

Pete Wells finally shelved his aliases a year ago after 12 years as the restaurant critic for The New York Times. His specialty, as he has put it, is writing “with opinion and analysis about all kinds of restaurants serving all kinds of cuisine in all kinds of neighborhoods for all kinds of prices.” He’s from Rhode Island and worked as an editor at Food & Wine and at The Times before being tapped to call the vast world of New York restaurants home turf.

Christina Tosi, an award-winning pastry chef and prolific cookbook writer whose iconic creations, notably cereal milk soft-serve, compost cookies and everyday birthday cake, are widely sold at her Milk Bar stores and elsewhere. We have another Ohio native here, but she now lives in Manhattan with her husband, restaurateur Will Guidera, and their daughter.

Her background is diverse, including engineering, and the food world noticed her once she began working for David Chang’s Momofuku empire in 2005. After the program, Christina will sign copies of her new book, Bake Club, which will be available for purchase.

Andrew Carmellini’s rustic and refined cooking combines American roots and Italian heritage and is on display in more than a score of restaurants in New York and elsewhere.

Each represents a distinctive element in his varied portfolio, assembled after making his name as chef de cuisine at the original Café Boulud in 1998. The Ohio native now unties his apron and puts his feet up, when he can, on the North Fork.

MARGARITA ESPADA MINERVA PEREZ FUENTEOVEJUNA: EAST END The 2025 Community Artist-in-Residence award goes to theater artists Margarita Espada and Minerva Perez. As CAiRs, they have created a contemporary, community-driven adaptation of Fuenteovejuna, a classic Spanish play by Lope de Vega.

Written between 1612–1614 and first published in 1619, Fuenteovejuna is based on a 1476 uprising in the Castilian village of the same name.

After enduring abuse by a local commander, the villagers united to kill him. When questioned under torture, they famously responded, “Fuenteovejuna did it.”

This new version reimagines the East End as the village. Home to people from over 20 Spanish-speaking nations and where over half the school population is Latino, the East End faces ongoing injustices: wage theft, housing exploitation, worker safety issues, mental health challenges, and limited access to transportation and health care.

The adaptation explores how divisions—by language, class, immigration status, and more—can fracture a community, and how unity can become resistance.

ABOUT COMMUNITY ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE The Community Artist-in-Residence (CAiR) supports the creative economy, imagination, and civic life on the East End by commissioning regionally based artists to develop socially engaged or participatory work. Artists are provided with creative mentorships, administrative support, a commissioning fee, and a shared studio/workspace on the Guild Hall campus.

The Guild Hall William P. Rayner Artist-in-Residence (WPR AiR) program offers artist collectives the time and space to research, experiment, and develop new ideas and projects. Artists are provided with creative mentorships, administrative support, a commissioning fee, living space, and a purpose-built studio.

The 2025 WPR AiR program welcomes two artists-in-residence back to Guild Hall this season for premieres of work developed while in-residence: Whitney White: The Case of The Stranger on June 21 and Music From The Sole: House is Open, Going Dark on August 22.

The Guild Hall Teen Arts Council (GHTAC) is the region’s first paid teen arts program.

As employees of Guild Hall, GHTAC members work to curate public programming, advance their creativity, increase Guild Hall’s outreach to local teens, and learn through collaboration with Guild Hall staff.

“When I moved here in eighth grade, I didn’t really have a huge community or place where I could express myself.

Even when I joined the Teen Arts Council initially, I was a little hesitant to open myself up to people because it was this whole group of people that I hadn’t met before and I wasn’t super comfortable with. And I’ve seen all these people come in and out of Guild Hall and the Teen Arts Council, and I’ve gotten to meet so many artists and residents, all these people I never would’ve had the opportunity to even get to know in the first place. And it’s just been such an amazing process.”

STUDENT ART FESTIVAL: RAUSCHENBERG 100 NOVEMBER 16, 2025-JANUARY 4, 2026 The 2025 Student Art Festival: Rauschenberg 100 honors the centennial of Robert Rauschenberg’s birth by joining an international museum initiative organized by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Guild Hall will partner eight public schools and 10 east end artists to collaboratively delve into what Rauschenberg called the “gap between art and life,” valuing chance and collaboration in a wide range of materials, subjects, styles, and creative techniques.

The Festival concludes with an exhibition of new works and creative presentations by the partnered public schools and artists, and a special presentation of Rauschenberg’s work held in Guild Hall’s permanent collection. The permanent collection exhibition will be co-curated by the Guild Hall Teen Arts Council and Museum Director & Curator of Visual Arts, Melanie Crader.

ABOUT THE STUDENT ART FESTIVAL The Guild Hall Student Art Festival (SAF) is a beloved tradition that encourages and celebrates the artistic achievement and imagination of students, Kindergarten to Grade 12, on the South Fork of Long Island.

Through close collaboration with schoolteachers and districts, we explore an annual theme, partner each participating school with regional artists, produce an exhibition of new works, and link the tenets of creative production to civic participation.

The Clothesline Art Sale is one of the most beloved and affordable art traditions in the Hamptons since its inception in 1946. For 79 years, it has provided accessible artwork to the community, while supporting the local artists who thrive here.
