Alana & Rocket: A match made in heaven.

Alana is a remarkable young woman. Having been born with oculocutaneous albinism, a rare genetic condition, Alana has less than three percent usable vision.

Alana has been supported by the team at Guide Dogs for as long as she can remember. She has overcome many challenges. Now 18 years old, Alana is a student at the University of Adelaide, and is as independent as ever, with assistance from her Guide Dog and best friend, Rocket.

When she was young, we helped Alana navigate her world by teaching her to use a white cane.

This opened up many possibilities, but Alana always knew that a Guide Dog could provide more independence and ultimately, freedom.

“A cane bumps the user into a problem, whereas a dog guides them around it,” Alana explains.

Turning 18 was important for Alana, it meant that she could receive a Guide Dog. We matched her to recentlygraduated Guide Dog Rocket, who not only provides physical assistance, but also emotional support. Navigating the world with Rocket by her side lowers Alana’s anxiety as she embarks on university life.

“It was clear that Rocket was the perfect Guide Dog for me from the start,” says Alana. “He’s so affectionate. He leans on me and provides reassurance. He’s also an ideal match for me as we’re both very fast walkers!”

Each Guide Dog we match is carefully selected to complement client characteristics and their specific needs, creating a unique and meaningful partnership. Guide Dog Orientation and Mobility Instructor Taylor worked side-by-side with Alana and Rocket as they solidified their partnership, supporting the duo as they progressed from initial training,

then learning to navigate the university campus and catch public transport.

“Alana and Rocket complement each other perfectly,” says Taylor, Guide Dog Mobility Instructor.

“I knew straight away that Rocket was the perfect dog for Alana.

“It’s as if they’ve always been together. Rocket adores Alana, and Alana adores Rocket. They’re a match made in heaven.”

But it’s only with the kindness of our generous supporters that we’re able to help people like Alana, by providing Guide Dogs to those who need them.

Having Rocket has made an enormous difference to my life.”

He’s quiet, calm and very focussed –but has a clear understanding of when work has finished - and can be very cheeky!”

“I wouldn’t leave the house nearly as much. If I didn’t have Rocket, I would be studying online from home and would miss out on so much” says Alana.

“It must be hard to realise the impact of a Guide Dog if you haven’t met someone like me. The work that Guide Dogs do is really changing people’s lives.”

Acquired Brain Injuries

Our Neurological Vision Services team work with people who have suffered a brain injury or neurological event that has changed a person’s vision. We help equip our clients with valuable skills to ensure they stay as independent as possible.

Orientation and Mobility

Our specialist Orientation and Mobility Instructors help people move safely and independently through their world. Mobility training offers everyday skills to keep clients moving safely and with confidence.

Occupational Therapies

Our Occupational Therapists enable those with low vision or blindness to maintain personal care, domestic skills and engage within the community.

In 2021, Guide Dogs SA/NT helped more than 900 clients with low vision and blindness to achieve independence, participation, inclusion and wellbeing.
