General manager’s REPORT Wayne Watt

The Student Guild’s activities and operations on the Gold Coast campus in 2016 were focused on consolidating, streamlining and fine tuning our extensive range of services to our students and staff.

Following a hectic and facility-development based 2015, particularly the major construction of our food and beverage precinct, 2016 provided the Guild and their new tenants with the first full year of operations upon which to form the benchmark for their business strategies and evaluation. Having communicated to the tenants the possible effects of “down time” during semester breaks and in particular over the Christmas vacation, the precinct surprisingly gained unexpected patronage from the Gold Coast University Hospital and the surrounding precinct to support their operations during these times. To complement the existing tenancies and, with the support of the Student Guild Board, Guzman y Gomez and Providore Raw were positioned in the redeveloped refectory site. Push Architects were once again engaged to design this space to ensure a continuation of their themes and aesthetics utilised in the original stage of the Link refurbishment.

Push had submitted this original project to the AIA QLD State Architecture Awards and this design and structure won the 2016 Australian Institute of Architects Queensland State Medal - Beatrice Hutten Award for Commercial Architecture, 2016 AIA Gold Coast/Northern Rivers Building of the Year, 2016 AIA Gold Coast/Northern Rivers - Regional Commendation.

The “Beatrice Hutten Award” is the first “named” award Griffith University or a Griffith University building has been awarded, which is indeed a special and prestigious honour.

Push Architects Director, Paul Curran, and his team deserve all accolades received for this innovative yet practical design in transforming the “old” Uni Bar and refectory into a contemporary precinct containing boutique, student friendly food and beverage tenancies.

The aforementioned awards are testimony to Push’s cooperation with the Guild and the University and their professionalism and commitment in developing this unique venue for the campus.

It would be remiss of me not to reiterate our sincere

appreciation of the research and expertise the Guild Commercial Manager - Dennis Bollington - has committed to the redevelopment of this exciting, social and service orientated precinct, for not only campus staff and students, but the ever increasing number of community customers/ clients.

All Student Guild departments and commercial outlets have shown increased attendances and turnovers respectively whilst maintaining service levels at the highest standards. The professionalism of all the Guild staff and their continued commitment to the development within each of their respective departments, facilities and commercial outlets is greatly appreciated and I thank them most sincerely.

Please find their individual reports and photos in the following pages where they share their outcomes from another highly successful student focused year.

Integrated into this pool of talented staff were a number of new personnel the Guild was fortunate to gain the services of. Some in new roles and others replacing former staff members; Sport and Recreation Manager - Ryan Lenegan, Venue Manager - Bobby Smith, Uni Fitness Manager Shigeyuki Shinomiya, Student Support Manager - Kate Delaforce and Finance Manager - Mila Lutz.

In relation to the last two positions in particular, the former Student Support Manager - Steve Harris who had reestablished the position and department following the introduction of the SSAF funding, left to join the Queensland Cancer Council and his contribution to this department’s re-establishment is greatly appreciated. Kate Delaforce has added her own specific strengths to this role and associated programs and services. The previous Finance Manager - Martin Lamb unfortunately succumbed to an ongoing illness and after much consideration decided to retire. His contribution and efficiency within this specialised area was critical in the Guild’s commercial development, particularly when the bookshop was operational. We wish him every happiness in his retirement and hope his circumstances continue to improve.

Associated with this I would like to acknowledge Brigitte Oschadlin for her commitment and the inordinate amount of time and effort she contributed as Finance Officer in

covering Martin’s role during his illness and time away from work. Her efforts are truly appreciated. Dennis Bollington is also acknowledged and thanked for his time and expertise in supporting Brigitte during this stressful and busy time.

All new staff members have brought a new energy and perspective, not only to their respective departments, but also to the Guild’s general environment.

One of the “sad” losses at the end of 2016 was the closure of the Visual Arts Café. Originally opened in 1995 as Colours and then renamed by Cater Care as Coffee Cellar, this venue was taken over by the Guild at the beginning of the year and, as Visual Arts Café, re-established itself among the staff and students at the eastern end of the campus. The existing area will now be utilised by the University whilst a new, contemporary café will be opened within the eastern end of the new spine path during 2017.

Last but not least I must thank the Board - not only have they been a responsible group of student representatives but their stability and common sense approach in all matters relating to their fellow students has been as refreshing as it has been appreciated.

The three year term President - Cameron Harrison - and Vice President - Ashley Ngauamo - developed a close working relationship and not only chaired the Board meetings and Sport and Cultural meetings respectively but were students who participated in the majority of the events, activities and sports available to them. This broad and personal contact with their peers enabled them to be positive and informed representatives of the Gold Coast campus community. Ashley was well respected by both her fellow board members and the many students she associated with throughout her role as Chair of the Sport

and Cultural Committee. We wish her every success in her chosen field upon graduation.

Cameron Harrison - “Mr President” - has been a steady, strong and significant member of all the boards he was a member of and/or chaired. His priority remained in providing the best possible outcomes for the students and staff on campus and worked closely with myself and insured the Board’s objectives and the management service provisions were aligned. It is rare, within a Student Board environment, to have a President, be lucky enough to see a major project through to fruition. I know Cameron is especially proud of this achievement and the Board’s contribution in securing, approving and witnessing the completion of the development of the new food precinct and Uni Bar facility. Although there have been many and varied decisions and projects overseen by this Board, this is of particular significance and should be acknowledged.

As I have stated on previous occasions it has been a pleasure to have been associated with Cameron during his time on the Board and particularly as President. I have appreciated and valued his time, direction and friendship, and on behalf of all of the staff and students associated with the Guild I wish him every success with his medical career.

STUDENT SUPPORT & ADVOCACY KATE DELAFORCE

Student Support & Advocacy Manager

The Student Support and Advocacy department provides Griffith University students with support and advice in regards to Griffith University policies. These include, but are not limited to review of grade; special consideration; academic misconduct concerns; deferred assessment; and exclusion. It is also responsible for overseeing several Student Guild services consisting of the Intercampus Bus; Justice of the Peace volunteers; Emergency Loans; Assignment Help; Financial Bursaries; Exam Support; Tax Service; and Legal Advice Service.

Student Support and Advocacy services are in place to provide students with safe and reliable resources as well as professional advice and support in relation to academic concerns. The key objective this year was to enhance the availability and accessibility of the Student Support services offered. We achieved this through enabling the provision of more Student Support consultants and appointments, and therefore increased support to students.

Advocacy

Bursaries & Financial Support

In 2016 the Student Support and Advocacy Manager engaged with 223 students via email, phone or in person on a formal basis to provide academic and personal support, assistance and advice. Of these appointments, 85% were undergraduate students and 15% were postgraduate students. It can also be noted that 79% were domestic students and 21% were international students.

In 2016 the Student Guild provided individual bursaries and vouchers to students experiencing extreme financial hardship and/or students who demonstrated a significant contribution to the Griffith University community. Throughout the year, 13 bursaries of $1000, two bursaries of $500, and eight Bookshop, go card or Coles vouchers of up to $500 were provided to currently enrolled Griffith University Gold Coast students. Four bursaries were specifically allocated to students of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander decent.

Events The Student Guild engages with a number of existing national events relevant to student support. In 2016 this included R U Ok? Day, reminding people to have meaningful conversations for suicide prevention; Harmony Day, reiterating Griffith’s mantra that “everyone belongs” and celebrating the diversity of our campus and Gold Coast community; Help End Homelessness, as well as Relay For Life and University Mental Health and Wellbeing Week, as detailed below.

Relay for Life

University Mental Health and Wellbeing Week

Held Saturday 17 September, the Griffith University Gold Coast Relay For Life had more than 40 registered teams for this 18 hour event. Planning for the Relay began in March 2016 and with a huge team effort combined of Student Guild and Cancer Council employees, and student volunteers. The event hosted the greatest number of activities to date and an increase in registered teams from previous years. Once again, the Candlelight Ceremony reminded everyone of why they were there and what their efforts were achieving and in total, this event raised over $50000, a significant increase from the amount raised in 2015.

Funds raised for cancer research, prevention & support

University Mental Health and Wellbeing Week was held 10-14 October on the Gold Coast campus. The week focused on raising awareness and breaking down the stigma of mental illness with the tagline “The Big Mindset together we can stop the stigma”. Students were presented with the opportunity to spray paint a giant head with one side representing negative thoughts (stigma) and the other side, positive thoughts (breaking down the stigma). We also provided students with a safe space to relax and reflect, providing beanbags, free tea and candles with positive affirmations. At the conclusion of the week, we deconstructed the head to symbolise breaking down the stigma. This event was extremely well received by students, with many engaging in meaningful conversations with Student Guild employees and volunteers throughout the week.

Services Intercampus Bus The intercampus bus provides transport between the Gold Coast and Nathan campuses for students and staff. This service was offered Monday to Friday during each semester only, including examination periods, and provided five departure times each way. This service was predominantly utilised by students - see breakdown of passengers for each semester below.

Justice of the Peace

Legal Service

The Student Guild coordinates Justice of the Peace volunteers to be available to students and staff in order to certify documents as needed. During each semester, the Justice of the Peace volunteers saw an average of 174 clients per month and certified an average of 583 documents per month.

The legal service aims to provide free fortnightly legal advice to all currently enrolled Griffith University Gold Coast students. Powered by McInnes Wilson Lawyers, students are offered 15 minute personalised legal consultations with a qualified lawyer via face-to-face or phone. This service was available from Weeks 1-13 at the Student Guild office every Wednesday fortnight from 9am to 11am.

Tax Service In 2016 the Student Guild’s tax service was provided

by Etax Accountants, Australia’s number one online tax agent service. Eligible, currently enrolled Gold Coast students were provided with a personal discount link after attending an appointment at the Student Guild. This allowed students to lodge a tax return with the help of online accountants completely free of charge. The service was offered from 25 July through to 26 August and serviced 244 students in total.

Assignment Help The Assignment Help service aims to provide currently enrolled Griffith University Gold Coast students with academic support, specifically basic proofreading and editing, as well as referencing, planning and layout, research techniques, or general instruction on course and University assignment guidelines. Students were offered 30 minute personalised appointments with an Assignment Help Advisor and the focus was on the students’ assignment prior to submission. This service was offered from Weeks 2-13 at the Student Guild office Monday to Friday each week, with a total of 689 appointments made by currently enrolled students.

Exam Support Free Exam Breakfasts During the University examination periods throughout the year, the Student Guild once again provided students with free healthy breakfast options prior to their exams.

Students were offered breakfast shakes, bananas, apples, almonds, breakfast bars, ice tea and water. This has been an extremely well received initiative and continues to grow each year.

Survive the Exam Cram The Student Guild introduced a new initiative in 2016 which focused on supporting students who were on campus late at night studying during the examination periods. Students were offered coffee, tea, Red Bull, muffins, doughnuts, lollies, muesli bars, fruit and almonds between 9pm to 11pm at various locations, times and days throughout the examination period. We serviced more than 2000 students throughout semester one and two examination periods, with this initiative receiving praise from students who commented on the comfort they felt just taking a break and chatting with a Guild volunteer during a highly stressful period. Several students sent through a personal message to thank the Student Guild, confirming the need to continue this initiative in the future.

Gold Coast Association of Postgraduates (GCAP) KATE DELAFORCE

Student Support & Advocacy Manager

GCAP aims to create a positive experience for Gold Coast postgraduate students through the provision of academic services and support; opportunities for increased social engagement within the postgraduate community; and assistance in preparation for the transition from postgraduate study to the workforce. In 2016, the number of postgraduate students registered remained consistent, seeing 919 postgraduate students actively engaged as members. With approximately 2710 postgraduate students enrolled at the Gold Coast campus, this means 34% of Griffith University Gold Coast postgraduate students participated in at least one GCAP event.

GCAP held its Annual General Meeting on Thursday 24 May. On Wednesday 7 September, the GCAP Committee held a General Meeting to approve a new GCAP Constitution which outlined a change in the committee structure to a Board structure. Events and Programs Major Events

Winery Tour

GCAP hosted two major social events for postgraduate students in 2016. The Secret Cocktail Party was held at Dreamworld on Saturday 16 April in which the venue was exclusive to attendees on the night. The popular Cocktails in the Sky Party made its return in Semester 2, and was held on Saturday 3 September on the 77th floor of the Q1 Resort and Spa Building in Surfers Paradise.

Both events were a sell out with 300 attending the Secret Cocktail Party and 350 attending the Q1 Cocktails in the Sky Party.

On Saturday 28 May, 24 postgraduate students enjoyed a trip with GCAP to the wonderful Gold Coast Hinterland to taste some of Queensland’s finest wine. This event included four wineries, a brewery, a distillery, lunch, and round-trip transportation. This was a sell-out event with all who attended speaking very positively of their experience.

Networking Lunches GCAP provided students with several opportunities to network with other postgraduates across the campus over a casual luncheon. With nine free lunches provided over two trimesters, 900 students used this opportunity to meet with others and share postgraduate experiences.

This event continues to be the foundation for engaging Gold Coast postgraduate students and increasing GCAP membership numbers.

Friday Social GCAP continued to host Friday afternoons at the Uni Bar, providing another space for postgraduates to network with each other whilst enjoying a bite to eat and a beverage.

More than 800 postgraduate students participated in the Friday Socials over the 6 events held across both semesters.

Australia Zoo On Saturday 19 March, GCAP hosted a day at the world famous Australia Zoo. This event included roundtrip transportation and the opportunity to cuddle a koala, hand-feed the kangaroos, walk with a Sumatran tiger or watch a crocodile launch from the water’s edge. In total, 35 postgraduate students attended this event.

Uncommonwealth Games GCAP introduced a new event in 2016 designed to encourage postgraduate students to socialise in a relaxed and fun environment. This event provided members with a mix of entertaining/sporty activities including water bowling, potato sack races, water balloon dodgeball, flipper relays, and human hungry hippos. All attendees were rewarded with lunch and refreshments for their efforts. In total, 38 GCAP members attended this event.

Beenleigh Artisan Rum Distillery Tour & Sirromet Winery Tour On Saturday 8 October, GCAP hosted a day tour to both the Beenleigh Artisan Rum Distillery and Sirromet Winery with 16 GCAP members in attendance. This event included a tour through the real-life working distillery, followed by sampling of the seven products from the Beenleigh Range. The event also included a full guided tour at Sirromet Wines to see first-hand how their wines are made, with lunch included.

Ask Roulette Ask Roulette saw students meet up in a safe, social environment for engaging stories, random connections and tons of laughter! We held this event on Friday 8 April, Thursday 5 May, and Thursday 2 June at the Uni Bar Gold Coast campus hosted by Kevin Filo. Over the three events we had over 75 students take part.

Funding and Awards The GCAP Funding program is designed to provide support to postgraduate students who may be experiencing financial hardship that may significantly impact the completion of their academic studies or research; and/ or support postgraduate students to engage in community charity work both domestically and internationally. The GCAP Awards program aims to award postgraduate students who have achieved academic success and made a significant contribution to Griffith University and/ or their community. This award acts to benefit GCAP members by furthering their research, education, and/ or professional and personal development as students through the exposure to learning opportunities outside of Griffith University. In 2016, GCAP restructured its Funding and Awards Program, with the following Funding and Awards on offer for GCAP Members.

Examples of previous CCEF projects include a dental student who went to Papua New Guinea to provide emergency dental services and supporting students from Hope4Health on the Sumba Project.

Postgraduate Coursework Awards

FUNDING SUMMARY

The Postgraduate Coursework Awards program aims to award postgraduate coursework students who have made a significant contribution to Griffith University and/ or their community whilst achieving academic success.

This acts to benefit GCAP members by furthering their research, education, and/or professional and personal development as students.

GCAP provided over $50000 in funding and awards to GCAP members throughout the year.

Higher Degree By Research The Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Awards program aims to award postgraduate students who have made a significant contribution to Griffith University and/or their community. This award acts to benefit GCAP members by furthering their research, education, and/or professional and personal development as students through exposure to learning opportunities outside of Griffith University.

Financial Hardship Funding GCAP recognises the demanding nature of postgraduate studies and how students may experience financial hardship as a result of unexpected changes to their financial status. Therefore, GCAP aims to provide funding for Griffith University Gold Coast campus postgraduate students who may be experiencing financial hardship so as to assist in the completion of their academic studies or research.

Charity and Community Enhancement Fund The purpose of the GCAP Charity and Community Enhancement Funding (CCEF) program is to provide support to assist postgraduate students to engage in community

GCAP Awards Night In 2016, the Board introduced the GCAP Awards Night to recognise and celebrate postgraduate students who were successful in receiving a GCAP Award. This event looked to recognise postgraduate students for their academic achievement, development, involvement, and university engagement at Griffith University. This was a hugely successful event.

Message from the President GCAP strives to support Griffith’s postgraduate students on the Gold Coast campus across multiple platforms, and I’m pleased to say that 2016 was another successful year for us. Not only have we continued to help provide the work-life balance for students through our social and networking events, but restructured our funding and grants policies so we could continue to award and financially support as many of our postgraduate coursework and Higher Degree Research (HDR) students as possible. A number of new ideas for networking, social and academic events were implemented by our GCAP Board throughout the year, and these proved to be successful and positive experiences for postgraduate students.

One major achievement for GCAP as a postgraduate organisation in 2016 that needs recognition occurred at the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA) conference in November 2016 of which we are an affiliate. It was here where we gained the support of other postgraduate associations at universities across the country, and resulted in GCAP becoming an official voting member on this national council. This provides us as your GCAP Board with the power to represent and advocate for you as postgraduate students on the Gold Coast at a national level in regards to issues affecting Australian postgraduate students.

Our GCAP membership has continued to increase throughout 2016, so I’d like to end by saying a huge thank you to all of our postgraduate students on Griffith’s Gold Coast campus for your continued support and returning each year with such enthusiasm. The Student Guild’s administration and reception team is the first point of call for many students with queries by phone, email and in-person. The services and support provided by administration staff are critical to student needs, particularly through orientation periods for commencing and continuing students when demand for accommodation, go cards and general information is at a peak. Administration coordinates and delivers a range of key services in a professional and welcoming environment to assist students on campus, as detailed in the report below.

In 2016 reception staff responded to more than 23000 enquiries via phone, email, website submissions and inperson queries regarding Student Guild specific services and facilities. We also continue to receive and respond to non-Guild related enquiries ranging from on campus directions to staff locations, parking and general Gold Coast information.

Accommodation Transport Service The number of students utilising this free transportation service, to view accommodation options in the local area, increased by 9% in 2016. The service operates two weeks prior to both Semester 1 and 2, with international students predominantly benefitting by enabling them to compare rooms in units and houses in person. International students from Switzerland, Croatia, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Ghana, France, Nigeria, Jordan, Canada, Kenya, Vietnam and Zimbabwe experienced a chauffeured experience to accommodation destinations with firsthand knowledge on the suburbs’ facilities given by the driver. Suburbs of interest to students included Parkwood, Labrador, Southport and Surfers Paradise with 132 destinations in total inspected.

Off Campus Housing Options Purpose built off-campus accommodation complexes such as Nexus Place (Ashmore), University Square (Parkwood), University Village (Parkwood) and Metro on Central (Labrador) provide varied options for shared living, many having their own bathroom with their bedroom. All provide ease of access to Griffith with public transport options (Translink.com.au), personalised shuttle buses or within walking distance. All complexes received 100% occupancy rates during 2016 enabling other options from fellow students or the community to be considered.

The Student Guild provides a service of advertising rooms or units to students on our website and purposebuilt accommodation noticeboard located on campus outside the Student Guild office. Current Griffith students advertise for free and non-students pay $10 for one month of advertising. Generally advertising is preferred during peak periods being up to one month before the commencement of classes.

Advertising decreased in 2016 possibly due to competitive websites that offer no fee to advertise accommodation, such as flatmates.com and gumtree.com.au.

Welcome Packs New and potential students were given ‘Welcome Packs’ throughout the year which provide accommodation options such as the student-built accommodation complexes, on-campus and off-campus listings which are located on our website. Additional information relating to the Gold Coast, Student Guild, Griffith University and the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) is included in flyers, magazines and maps which enable students to obtain physical handouts opposed to directing them to only online sources. One hundred and fifty packs were distributed and will continue to be an available source of information to visitors.

Employment The Student Guild assists Griffith Careerboard by processing casual and part-time Gold Coast advertised positions which we also add to our own employment noticeboard in G07. Casual and part-time positions decreased by 18% in 2016 however we found an increase in other job vacancy advertisements - predominantly volunteer, full-time and work-experience based roles, which were directed to the appropriate Griffith departments. Casual and parttime positions not advertised with us were still filtered from Careerboard which enabled 197 additional Gold Coast positions to be added to our noticeboard for students to view in person rather than being primarily viewed online.

Ancillary Services go cards Discounted public transport is provided via Translink’s go cards which can be purchased and topped up at the Student Guild. New concession go card purchases decreased 50% in 2016 as Translink introduced a new process of having concession fares applied to adult go cards from 1 April 2016. The new process increased adult card purchases by 346%, enabling students to continue to use their go card when graduating or deferring, as concession prices revert back to adult fares. Overall, new go card purchases decreased due to the collaborative process. Adult go cards can also be purchased at the tram stations and pre-paid go cards are also available at The Uni Store. Daily ‘go explore’ cards are also available at the Student Guild which provide daily unlimited Gold Coast travel on buses and trains and 23 were sold to visitors of the Gold Coast campus.

End of Trip The End of Trip facilities are located at G40, G42, G52 and G16 and provide a shared storage facility for bicycles and include showers. Some facilities provide temporary lockers which allow up to 12 hour free storage

hire. The Student Guild provides a service to sell and reactivate swipe cards to access these facilities. This service increased 11% in 2016.

Lockers Locker hire increased 24% in 2016 with 92 of 132 lockers occupied by students. Our general and bike lockers provide students with the option of storing their belongings or bike in a long-term facility. Our general lockers are located inside G05, G01 and G23 and the bike lockers are located outdoors (near G14) for ease of access, although still provide protection from environmental elements.

Court Hire Bookings for the tennis, basketball and volleyball courts at The Pavilion (G32) can be made in-person at the Student Guild by students and staff, 7 days a week, including free equipment.

Tutors Our tutor service provides a web platform for current students to offer paid tuition for various subjects. We saw a steady 7% increase from last year’s figures with a total of 204 registered tutors in 2016, 20% of which were international students.

GUGC Sport delivers and oversees sporting life on the Gold Coast campus, ranging from social sports to student clubs, scholarships and local competition. Australian University Sport events, particularly the Northern and Australian University Games (AUG), are calendar highlights, and Griffith University Gold Coast (GUGC) continues to perform to a high representative standard.

At the Northern University Games (NUG) this year on the Sunshine Coast, GUGC registered a team of 229 participants. It was a successful week with a gold medal result for open baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s netball and men’s and women’s touch football, awarding Griffith Gold Coast a total of six pennants. It was a very close competition tying with QUT on the same number of pennants, however finished 2nd overall due to a countback to silver and bronze medals.

The GUGC Sport scholarship program plays an important part in securing and providing financial support to high level student athletes. In 2016 the second semester scholarships were continued (introduced in 2015) due to its success. Overall 25 Griffith Gold Coast student athletes were afforded scholarships and Griffith certainly benefited from their representation at the Northern and Australian University Games. Of the 25 scholarship athletes five competed at NUG, 16 at AUG and four represented Griffith at both championships. In addition, 11 students were a part of a gold medal pennant team,

seven silver, four bronze and nine 4th placed teams.

Eleven athletes were also presented with Green and Gold team selection recognising their high level performance during the week of the Games.

The Australian University Games were held in Perth where 96 participants from the Gold Coast campus competed in a combined Griffith University team. Within the combined Griffith team, 79% were Gold Coast students, 86% of which participated in Division 1 medal matches and 94% were selected in Green and Gold teams. Griffith University progressed through to three gold medal pennant finals with men’s touch football able to back up their 2015 success and came home with the gold. Griffith finished 11th of 42 universities - a great result considering the location of the event and high costs associated.

Blues Awards for Sporting Excellence Recognising outstanding sporting performances of Griffith University students, the Blues Awards are a combined effort between the Student Guild, Campus Life and the Griffith Sports College and in 2016 were again held at the Griffith University Gold Coast Uni Bar and Function Centre.

This year 28 Full Blues Awards were presented to Griffith students who had competed at an international level and 39 Half Blue Awards were presented to students who had competed at a national level in the preceding 18 months.

FISU World Netball Championships A particularly noteworthy achievement in 2016 was the selection of the entire Griffith University women’s team to represent Australia at the 2016 FISU World Netball Championships in Miami, Florida. The Uniroos team competed against 11 other countries for the title of World Champions over five days of competition from 13-17 July. The Griffith University team’s selection to represent Australia is a source of particular pride for the Gold Coast campus with ten of the twelve players, and two members of the management team enrolled as Gold Coast students.

The selection reflects the high calibre of the team who were undefeated at all Australian University Sports events in 2015 (including Australian Uni Games and the Northern Uni Games). The team included several players from the Golden South Jaguars in the Queensland State League as well as Queensland representatives in the under 21 division.

In support of this achievement GUGC Sport assisted these student athletes both in-kind and financially, and we are very proud of their achievement. The Griffith University Australian team beat the Mighty Cranes from Uganda to place 3rd overall and receiving a bronze medal, placing behind Jamaica and South Africa who courted five international players each respectively.

RECREATION GUGC Sport provides a range of recreational trips each semester providing students the chance to experience some of the best activities the Gold Coast and surrounding areas have to offer at an affordable price. There were many of the same popular trips offered in 2016 with the addition of a new ‘Griffith Takes Over - Titans’ event, which attracted almost 200 students to watch the Titans take on the Penrith Panthers. This may have been the first time many of the students in attendance had seen a live sport match and for some, their first time experiencing the game.

Courses, Workshops and Volunteer Program

Stevie Snook Programs Officer

The role of the Programs Department is to increase student participation in non-academic activities as well as provide beneficial services aimed at enhancing their experience at university, developing their skill-set, or providing support where possible.

After the success of its introduction in 2015, the Kids Holiday Club was again offered to Griffith students and staff whose primary school aged children are on school holidays while they are still in semester. Growing from the previous year, the club was offered in both the April and September holidays hosting 73 kids collectively.

The program includes on campus activities such as arts and crafts, activities on the basketball court, Sand Studies presented by the CoastEd department and also has Nutrition and Dietetics students host daily interactive morning tea demonstrations. Off-campus excursions also take place twice per week including Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, indoor play centres and mini golf.

In 2016, the Guild Crew Volunteer Program continued to increase in size as well as hours undertaken by the volunteers themselves. A Senior Volunteer position was introduced giving the Crew’s experienced volunteers the opportunity to take on more responsibility and lead those new to the program. The Senior Volunteers successfully organised and executed the team building and Leadership Camp for Guild Crew which has, in the past, been outsourced to an external company.

For the third consecutive year, the Student Guild Volunteering Abroad trip took place. Twenty-nine students travelled to the small, underdeveloped community of Dhulikhel in Nepal, where they taught English and assisted with painting and repairs at two local primary schools. The initial goal was to paint six walls at each school however the volunteers were so determined and hardworking they managed to complete 24 walls over the two schools including bright, educational murals on 20 of them. Over 100kgs of educational resources were also donated to the schools including reading books, notepads, posters, pens, a television and speakers. The final act of service from the volunteers was to donate enough new clothing so that every child at one school received a new outfit. This was a very overwhelming achievement for all involved as the children each only owned one outfit at the time; their school uniform that had been donated by the school.

The Student Guild Events Department is responsible for providing a wide variety of different cultural and social events, providing students with the chance to socialise and interact outside the classroom. The Events Department aims to provide high quality events tailored specifically to meet the needs and wants of Griffith University Gold Coast Students.

The focus for Events in 2016 was to expand the events calendar to reach a wider student demographic and provide ‘something for everyone’. Some of the new events and programs added to the calendar included free monthly movie nights, Sunday Funday (beach activities) at Budds Beach, arts and craft events such as Wine and Untangle, free mixed and women’s Self Defence Classes, and an Anzac Day presentation featuring Victoria Cross recipient and keynote speaker, Mark Donaldson. 2016 also saw the introduction of Stress Less Week, falling in Week 13 of each semester. The purpose of Stress Less Week is to provide students with activities that aid in the

reduction of stress before they head into the exam period - events included free yoga, craft workshops, wellness activities and games days.

The major events were still as popular as ever in 2016 with all six themed Uni Bar parties selling out in advance, the Guild Ball increasing to 1100 attendees and the Student Guild Race Day again being the largest ever with 3000 attending the event at the Gold Coast Turf Club. Overall it was a very successful year for events with total attendance at 46722 across 57 events.

Joining a club on campus is a great way to meet likeminded people, share interests, build networks, make friends and make a difference. On the Gold Coast campus, Student Guild affiliated clubs include academic, cultural, special interest groups as well as recreational sport to competitive sporting clubs. In 2016 there were 66 cultural clubs with 12,492 members and 31 sporting clubs with 1954 members creating an overall total of 97 clubs with 14,446 members.

The Student Guild has a primary role in providing all clubs with financial support and administrative guidance, enabling the continued improvement of club structures for the benefit of members and increasing diversity to cater for student needs.

Clubs are provided with an opportunity to recruit new members at the Sign-on Days held at the start of each semester and during O’Week. In O’Week clubs were invited to participate on Monday, Tuesday or both days with 45 club stalls held over both days. Semester One Club Sign On Day saw 32 cultural and 29 sporting clubs and the semester two event had 35 cultural and 22 sporting clubs were in attendance.

Along with O’Week and Club Sign On Days clubs were given the opportunity to participate in Club Experience Day. The day was held for clubs to showcase what they offer to students with activities including a rock climbing wall, ball throwing accuracy competition, cheer demonstrations and lots of different food.

The success of a club is largely due to work of the administrative committee. To aid this, the Student Guild held its third Clubs Conference in 2016 with guest speakers covering topics such as financial management and club governance, whilst Student Guild staff addressed the processes and resources of the Student Guild.

An additional club funding scheme continued to be available enabling Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) funds to be allocated to clubs and club activities, assisting clubs and their members outside of the existing club grants and subsidies. The additional funding application process enabled the Student Guild to support 25 Hope4Heath students to travel to The Global Health Conference in Newcastle, assist the A Capella Choir Club

host the Voices in Paradise event engaging high school and university students, provide the Griffith Racing Team with a custom made laptop to operate their race car, allow the Griffith Athletics Club to purchase an ice machine for ice baths, assist the Griffith University Association of Pharmacy hold a guest speaker presentation, and finally, help the Outdoor Adventure Club train their Executive Members on rock climbing and safety practises.

At the annual Guild Awards many outstanding clubs were recognised as a whole along with the standout club administrators, club events, initiatives and achievements.

STUDENT GUILD AWARDS Clubs, volunteers and athletes are an integral part of the Student Guild and each year the Guild Awards are held to acknowledge their achievements throughout the year. Held on Friday 21 October, 167 guests consisting of volunteers from the Guild Crew, sporting and cultural club executives and their members celebrated, and were acknowledged for, their hard work and successes for 2016 across a range of award categories. The Uni Bar strives to provide a great environment for all students and staff to enjoy. In its second year of operation (since being newly renovated), our focus has been to deliver quality beverage options to go hand in hand with the newly upgraded food precinct in The Link building. This is reflected in our new wine lists, upgraded cocktails and more draft beer options.

Our customers were taken on a journey with regular tastings of new products. This would not have been possible without the support of our valued suppliers including Amadio Wines, Diageo, Lion, South Trade, Red Bull and Robert Oatley Wines. The work carried out in these areas would have contributed significantly to the 20% increase in drink sales achieved in 2016.

The Uni Bar delivered interactive activities including bingo, trivia, Spin2Win, pool competitions and beer pong on a daily basis as a means of boosting student engagement.

We also provided live music on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays with the aim being to create a relaxing, ambient atmosphere for everyone to enjoy and unwind.

The amount of positive feedback has helped confirm this is what the students are looking for.

Function Centre revenue increased by 25% in 2016 as this part of the business continues to grow. The Function Centre, main bar and terrace provide three distinctly different areas where parties and functions are able to be held. This diversity has proved popular with staff, students and the general community at large.

There were 6 major parties held during the course of the year including Beach Party, Toga Party, Doctor and

Nurses Party, Where’s Wally Party, Halloween Party, Back to School Party and each of these were sold out.

Other major events included State of Origin, Oktoberfest, Melbourne Cup, the Vice Chancellor’s Christmas Party, Griffith Long Service Medal Ceremony, Blues Awards and Clubs Awards night. There was also a welcoming of the Gold Coast City Council for their planning of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Bar meals were reintroduced in the second semester and these have once again proved very popular.

A big thank you must also go to our major sponsors and business partners including Griffith University, Providore Catering, Shooters nightclub, Melbas Nightclub, Lion, Wild Oats, Amadio Wines, Diageo, Red Bull, Coca Cola and Southtrade. Our team would also like to extend a warm thank you to all of our valued patrons in 2016. Finally, a huge thank you to all of the Uni Bar staff members. Your hard work and unique personalities all help forge the incredible culture that makes up the Uni Bar environment. I have thoroughly enjoyed leading this great team in 2016 and with the continued support of the Student Guild we are looking to further success in 2017.

Uni Fitness has grown in 2016 across most categories and as a result we have welcomed more students into our facilities. We are committed to providing an enjoyable experience for all members and assisting them to achieve their health and fitness goals.

One of the big changes we saw in 2016 was the expansion of our group fitness timetable. We have introduced new Les Mills programmes such as BodyVive 3.1 and CXWorx and these have proved to be very popular with members and visitors. The addition of more dance-themed classes such Burlesque and Hip Hop were also well received and attracted participation by both new and existing members.

Uni Fitness has also hosted a huge dance event in Semester 1 - Ultimate Dance Party. We reached a full capacity of 80 for the night and all of the participants really enjoyed it. Whether they were a Griffith student, staff or community member, they all moved in time together and the effect was absolutely amazing. We also organised a 90 minute Twilight Yoga challenge in Semester 2. This was designed as a Stress Less Week activity to help students chill out and take their minds off study workloads and upcoming exams.

Uni Fitness were once again proud to participate in the Mother’s Day Classic - a charity fun run event held Australia wide. Members of Uni Fitness and the Griffith community worked together and received an award for the Largest Tertiary Team for the fourth consecutive year.

Uni Fitness will see huge changes in 2017 with the opening of the Aquatic Centre and Functional Training Centre as well as an upgrade of our existing facilities.

THE UNI STORE DEBBy HAGUE Manager

The Uni Store continued to evolve in 2016 and although sales for the year were marginally down on a record 2015, the results were considered more than satisfactory.

The level of sales was a very strong indicator that our mission of providing products and services, covering a variety of different areas which meet the wants and needs of students and staff while on campus was in fact being met.

The Uni Store is always on the lookout for new and exciting products and 2016 saw the launch of our own Gold Coast specific Griffith merchandise which resulted in sales of logo wear going up substantially on the previous year. Our most successful lines have been new hoodies, t-shirts, backpacks and pens. We have also branded our top selling Watermate bottle with 177 units sold in 2016.

These bottles are unique in that they have a lock which helps prevent leakage. We are currently working on further broadening our existing logo range with exciting new products and suppliers.

2016 saw many new lines including a beautiful new range of cards which sold extremely well and the big square glass money boxes from Splosh continue to be a hit.

Woodwick Candles continue to remain our top selling giftware line. These candles are excellent quality, long lasting soy candles with a beautiful fragrance. The customers love the crackle the wooden wicks makes as the candles burn. Many new scents were introduced in 2016 and our customers really like the loyalty card with a real benefit of getting every 10th candle free.

The bulk lolly and confectionery ranges were once again huge in 2016 with sales of $89K of bulk lollies and $93K worth of confectionery. A substantial number of new lines were introduced including specific gluten free and/or halal lollies. This was a direct result of listening to the wants and needs of our customers and meeting the demand.

The Uni Store has a huge drinks range and sales have been helped by the first class merchandising that is able

to be achieved by using the modern built in refrigeration display and making sure the fridges are kept full and care is taken with respect to facings. Sales for 2016 at $165K represented the biggest selling department at 20% of total sales and was up on the previous year by some 15%. The large spike in drink sales on Market Days continues to grow as they get bigger.

The Fuse earphone range and Walk n Talk mobile accessory range continued to broaden. This played a major factor in the technology department being up over $6K on the year before bringing the department sales to $41K for the 2016 year.

The staff of 2016 did a great job with customers regularly commenting on the exceptional level of customer service and the fact our staff are always willing to go the extra mile. An example is offering free Christmas wrapping for all students and staff which proved very popular. This was

coupled with a very fun and successful 10% off Discount Day in December which will be continued in 2017.

Some of the staff top picks for the year were Fitkicks which are a lightweight flexible shoe retailing at $34.95 suitable for wear during yoga, pilates, walking or in water play. The $9.95 Hardcover Kitchen cookbooks including titles such as Raw, Simple, Student, Curry, Bakers, Easy & Smoothie were also popular.

Burleigh Heads where we saw a lot of our Australian products being hand made in their factory, which was so great to see. A huge thank you from myself and the team here at The Uni Store. We would like to thank all of our customers and the Student Guild management team for their continued support as we continue to grow and look forward to a very promising, very strong 2017.

The Uni Store Facebook page was successful in promoting new lines, marketing, and running games and competitions throughout the year, which saw us giving away lots of prizes. We finished the year with over 700 likes.

We believe it is important to keep up with the latest trends continually seeking new lines and new suppliers.

VILLAGE CAFE Shaun Edie Manager

Village Café is located on the south side of the Griffith University Campus and services a wide ranging cross section of customers including the following.; -------

Griffith University Village residents International students from GELI and the newly renamed Griffith College Researchers and staff from nearby research centres Students and staff from the Queensland Academy of Health Sciences High School Griffith University students and staff Neighbouring residents

We are the only shop in the immediate precinct and we supply a wide range of café lines including coffee, drinks, sandwiches, burgers and other hot foods. We also stock a range of convenience items including snack foods, groceries and stationery.

Over 50% of our customers are international students from countries including USA, Canada, China, Korea, Japan, Germany, France, England and South Africa.

2016 was our biggest year yet, with increased revenue of $37,500 (6%). This was influenced by several factors, the most significant being a full year without disruption due to construction. 2015 was heavily impacted in the first quarter due to the external refurbishment and development of the collaboration space.

The Coffee Kart located within the Collaboration space continued to service the growing foot traffic from the G55 multi story car park. This effectively creates an “express service” for students and staff passing through and wanting a coffee before classes.

In May 2016, Village Cafe was approached by the neighbouring Queensland Academy of Health Sciences High School to provide daily lunches for the students and staff. After a lot of research into the Queensland Governments “Healthy Choices” initiative, a healthy menu was developed with the students ordering via an online portal.

This valuable service was commenced in Term 3 and apart from being an additional revenue stream has also helped strengthen the relationship between QAHS and Village Cafe, and by extension, the Student Guild.

Overall, there was an increase of 9,500 (10%) transactions and although the average spends per customer reduced slightly from $7.31 in 2015 to $7.24 in 2016, the mix of products sold and the way we produce and source them resulted in a gross profit increase from 51% in 2015 to 54% in 2016.

The Village Café is continuously striving to meet our customers’ wants by introducing innovative new products, providing value for money and good customer service in a safe and friendly environment.

I would like to thank all my staff, especially my Assistant Manager, Casey Haslemore, the staff of Griffith University Village, namely Ky Lower and Maree Wilson, and the Student Guild staff, particularly Dennis Bollington, Commercial Manager, and Wayne Watt, General Manager, for their ongoing support throughout 2016, and I am confident we can continue to grow in 2017.

VISUAL ARTS CAFE

The Visual Arts Café previously outsourced as the Coffee Cellar, was owned and operated by the Student Guild in 2016 and commenced operations before the start of first semester. The café itself is located on the ground floor of the Visual Arts building (G14).

Rochelle Stewart was appointed the Manager of the café.

She did a great job building on the business generated previously with particular emphasis on providing quality coffee. Shaun Edie the manager of Village Café was also instrumental in getting the café open and operational.

The café and surrounding areas could have best been described as run down and as a result we spent minimum money tidying up the café and surrounds prior to opening under the Student Guild banner. However we were always mindful in spending that it was a potential building site that could have resulted in restricted access and loss of trade. The University’s Eastern Spine Project was being built in close proximity to the café but fortuitously we were able to trade without too many restrictions throughout both semesters in 2016.

Management continued to listen to the wants and needs of students and staff and the menu continued to evolve throughout the course of the year. The fact that it was going to be a building site made it difficult to budget.

However, sales exceeded budget by 2.13 times which gave the café a result for the year that exceeded all expectations.

There are no other food outlets within a close proximity and as a result we needed to operate with a reasonably diverse menu. The menu included coffee and cakes, rolls and wraps, gourmet burgers and chips, fresh salads, and a variety of hot dishes for those customers wishing to dine in. Fresh fruit juices, smoothies and acai bowls were also part of the offering.

The University took back the café site at the end of 2016 for its own purposes and as a result the café has now ceased operating. However all is not lost. The Student Guild will be operating a new and exciting café at the eastern end of the G06 building not far from the old site.

This café will be part of the University’s Eastern Spine Project and is due to open during the second half of the 2017 calendar year.
