PRESIDENT’S REPORT CAMERON HARRISON

What an exciting year, and how fortunate we are to be involved in growing and developing our campus for students of future generations to enjoy. This has truly been a year of success for the Griffith University Gold Coast Student Guild. The commitment of both Student Guild employees and Student Board representatives ensured the success of numerous events, services, support and programs. There has been increased engagement with Griffith University Executives, and their support for our projects and programs is truly appreciated by the Griffith Community. In my third year as Student Guild President, the ongoing provision of the Student Guild employees and Board continues to promote a positive ethos and environment that extends to the services we provide on campus. I would like to thank them all personally. We have also welcomed a number of new students to Board this year, and their input and insights have benefited us greatly. The ongoing decisions made by the Student Guild Board rely highly on the ability of the Student Guild staff to implement such, and I thank them for their efforts and commitment. The Student Guild Board met regularly throughout the year, planning events, thinking of new ideas and trying to keep your Guild experience as exciting as possible. We think that the number of sold-out events suggests we are having some success. Apologies to those who missed out on tickets to our popular events - capacity at our 3rd Annual Student Guild Ball was doubled, and over 2,000 students packed out the new Gold Coast Turf Club Events Centre for Race Day, with room to grow again next year. All of our events are of course continually supported by the ever-growing, ever-dedicated Guild Crew volunteers who ensure the smooth operation of these events. Griffith University also boasted its best ever University Games result, finishing second overall at the annual multisport event - the best result to date from a Queensland university! A great effort from all sporting teams competing and respective team managers. The achievements of these GUGC Sport athletes as well as all Student Guild clubs and societies were also celebrated at our annual Guild Awards in semester two. Thank you to all club executives,

we understand taking on your respective club roles is not a small commitment, and your ability to balance university studies, work, other commitments and running a club, that other students will enjoy and benefit from, is no easy task. Another quiet achievement of the Student Guild was winning a national university CampusLink Conference award for the ‘Most Successful Printed Publication’ for our revamped Getamungstit. Thank you and congratulations to the entire editorial team involved in this enjoyable, student friendly magazine – we look forward to next year’s editions. Perhaps the most noticeable difference on campus this year was the opening of the new Uni Bar and food precinct in Link Lane. The campus has welcomed Burger Urge, Providore and Flavour Asia who have provided fresh and delicious options for all of us to enjoy. This is a serious addition to the campus and real value add for students and staff. We look forward to watching Link Lane and other areas of our campus develop more next year (apologies for the construction). These are exciting times to be at Griffith University. There are countless achievements, events, and services that are showcased in this publication, and I urge you to read on. It is clear that the Student Guild is heading in the right direction, continuing to meet student needs on and off our campus and I look forward to reflecting on our development in another 12 months. I would like to once again thank the Staff and Board for their dedication and passion, and for the students who get involved and make it all worthwhile.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT WAYNE WATT

The Student Guild’s development of their extensive services, events, activities and commercial facilities continued to flourish throughout 2015. The foundations and changes established in the previous year and the continuance of the Student Services and Amenities Fee funding enabled the Student Guild to produce one of its most successful and engaging years. This is well supported by the department reports and statistics outlined throughout this annual report. The completion and opening of the Link food precinct was the Guild’s major commercial venture and success in 2015. The planning, negotiating and preliminary construction of the previous year became a tangible reality with the Uni Bar and the first tenancy - Burger Urge commencing trade in time for Orientation Week. The other tenants - Flavour Asia and Providore - followed a number of weeks later and the vision of a boutique university food precinct became a reality. The students, staff and community response and utilisation of this precinct has been an overwhelming success and more than justifies the inordinate amount of time and consideration the Guild’s Commercial Manager - Dennis Bollington - had contributed to researching, sourcing and negotiating this precinct’s mix of new food and beverage outlets for the campus. His contribution to the success of this commercial precinct is immeasurable. Melding this new facility with the redesign and relocation of the Uni Bar and Function Centre was also an element which was critical in completing an environment to meet the needs of students and staff. Rebecca Clark - Venue Manager - collaborated closely with the Commercial Manager to ensure the transition and operation of this new contemporary space was seamless. Rebecca’s advice, time and experience in contributing to all facets of this new facility is acknowledged and is greatly appreciated. Unfortunately in the latter part of the year Rebecca left the Uni Bar for a new and exciting challenge and we thank her for her contribution during her time with the organisation. 2015 also saw the end of a long and mutually beneficial association with Cater Care Australia (CCA) who had been the Guild’s preferred food and beverage contractors for over 12 years. It was a difficult and disappointing decision to end this wonderful association with a company who had commenced its operations in the early 2000 and had developed and promoted the Gold Coast

10

campus outlets as their flagship operation upon which they have built a strong, professional and respected company. The Chief Operating Officer/Director - Mr Colin Redman - has been a driving force in our continued association and was always available to negotiate and structure offers we believed were of great benefit to both our campus community and their business objectives. The most significant loss associated with this difficult decision was the Operations Manager - Lisa Masters having to end her association with the Student Guild and the Gold Coast campus community after 16 years of loyal service. Lisa was an integral element of Cater Care’s food and beverage services to the campus and her commitment and time is unequalled and her contribution can never be repaid. We thank her most sincerely and wish her every success in her continuing role with Cater Care Australia. The significant growth and development of our events department is attributed to the Events Manager - Cameron Sherwood - and his team in providing organised, professional and innovative events which are embraced by the student population. From Orientation Week through to the Vice Chancellor’s Christmas function, Cameron’s expertise ensures all facets of these activities are coordinated and managed to guarantee success. The Student Guild’s flagship social event - Race Day - once again exceeded expectations with a new venue available at the Gold Coast Turf Club. Cameron was able to double the student numbers to 2,000 and it continued its record of being sold out well in advance. His coordination and negotiation with the Turf Club and the management of staff and volunteers assured an outstanding event, appreciated by all. Linda Gillespie’s contribution of coordinating the Student Guild’s business partners and staff in the corporate function complemented the student’s festivities and her coordination of this important element of the day is greatly appreciated. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Student Guild’s business and commercial partners and campus tenants for their contribution in providing excellent services and products to the campus community. The Marketing Manager - Jess Brown - continued the rollout of the Guild’s rebrand across the campus and


streamlined campaigns to advertise and promote all aspects of the Guilds operations. Jess was instrumental in the student publication - Getamungstit - being awarded ‘Most Successful Printed Publication’ at the annual Tertiary Access Group’s (TAG) CampusLink Awards. The Guild’s management team were extremely disappointed, to say the least, when the Link food and Uni Bar precinct was only awarded a ‘Highly Recommended’ award in the ‘Most Successful New or Refurbished Building’ category!! The marketing department has been a continual resource and support for all Guild departments and in their respective growth and exposure to the campus community. The President - Cameron Harrison - and Vice-President - Ashley Ngauamo - were elected to their positions for a third term and this stability has enabled the Board to focus on developing a committed approach to their collective role and direction over the past 12 months. The continuing Board members and the newly elected students have formed a solid and unified platform upon which to discuss and debate issues of importance and relevance to their fellow students. It is refreshing to have positive, thoughtful and relevant matters tabled for discussion whilst also having open and considered input on matters proposed by the Guild’s management and staff. 2015 successes can be attributed to the Board’s overarching and commonsense approach to their important role as student representatives.

staff across all departments has ensured his knowledge of the Guild’s operation is comprehensive and current which is advantageous in conveying well balanced opinion and direction to his fellow Board members. It has been a pleasure to work with Cameron during his three terms as President and I have appreciated his time, direction and friendship. His overall support and commitment to the management and staff of the Guild has been greatly appreciated. Although I have noted specific staff contributions, particularly in relation to the Guild’s events, facilities and programs, this in no way detracts from the contribution of all Guild staff, to not only their specific departments, but to the entire Guild’s presence on this campus. All staff, permanent and casual, are integral in the Guild’s reputation and sustainability and I convey my sincere thanks to all for their contribution. Please find their reports following and trust this gives some appreciation of their commitment, time and contribution to the Griffith University Gold Coast campus.

Manager Student Support & Advocacy

Keeping in line with the Student Services and Amenities Fee legislation, the Student Support and Advocacy Services department provides Griffith University students with assistance, advice and advocacy in regards to Griffith University policies. These include, but are not limited to: grievances; appeals; special consideration; academic misconduct issues; deferred assessment; review of grade; probation and exclusion; dissatisfaction of academic matters; as well as harassment and bullying concerns. This position is also responsible for overseeing several Student Guild services. These include: the intercampus bus; Justice of the Peace; emergency loans; Assignment Help; scholarships; exam support; tax service; and legal advice service. Student Support and Advocacy services are in place to provide students with safe and reliable resources as well as professional advice and support in relation to academic issues. Following the successful provision of such services in 2014, the key objectives for Student Support this year were to enhance the availability and accessibility of Student Support services as well as maintain the key professional services already offered. We achieved this through securing a stand-alone office space on campus, enabling the provision of more Student Support consultants and appointments, and therefore increased support to students.

ADVOCACY

BURSARIES

In 2015 the Student Support and Advocacy Manager met with 165 students on a formal basis providing comprehensive support with formal appeals and representation at meetings. Of these appointments 69% of the students were domestic and 31% international. It can also be noted that 86% of the students requesting assistance were undergraduate and 14% enrolled in postgraduate studies.

In 2015 the Student Guild continued the Student Support Bursary program providing financial assistance to Griffith University Gold Coast students in dire circumstances. Each semester the Guild provided 10 bursaries of $1,000 each of which four were specifically allocated for students of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander decent.

Some cases are very informal and resolved quickly, while others have taken several months of meetings to be completed. The Advocacy Manager also provided advice and guidance to an additional 83 students informally via telephone or email correspondence.

EVENTS In addition to the continued support for Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ) events (Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, Daffodil Day and Relay for Life) this year the Student Guild took on a new CCQ initiative, the Cancer Free Challenge, for which the Student Guild received two major awards:

1. ROOKIE AWARD 2. HIGHEST FUNDRAISING TEAM - $13,222 On the weekend of 17-18 October the 3rd annual Griffith University Gold Coast Relay for Life took place. This event had 22 teams and 198 participants of Griffith students, staff and the local community registered. Planning for the event began in March 2015 with a group of 12 student volunteers attending bi-weekly meetings from March until October. The 18 hour event kicked off at 3pm with the opening ceremony and the Patron of the 2015 Griffith University Gold Coast Relay for Life, Student Guild Board President, Cameron Harrison welcoming

everyone to Relay and shared his perspective, as a future medical practitioner, of how important this event is. Once the ceremony had finished, cancer survivors and carers walked the first lap closely followed by those who had come to support the event and the Cancer Council. The event included a number of musicians performing on the Relay stage from the Queensland Conservatorium. Aside from all the fun going on at Relay, the Candlelight Ceremony reminded everyone of why they were there and what their efforts were achieving. In total, this event raised $30,733 and helped once again to create a community of giving amongst Griffith students and staff. We look forward to supporting this event again in 2016.

SERVICES INTERCAMPUS BUS The Student Guild continues to provide an intercampus bus service for students and faculty to travel between the Gold Coast and Nathan campuses. The statistics below demonstrate this service is predominantly utilised by students, however staff also made regular use of the intercampus bus. In 2016 we look forward to continuing this service as it provides a safe, reliable form of transportation for Griffith students and staff.

JUSTICE OF THE PEACE

EXAM SUPPORT

The Student Guild provides Justice of the Peace volunteers on campus for two hours, four days per week to certify documents for students and faculty. During the 2015 academic year, the Justice of the Peace volunteers saw an average of 153 clients per month and certified an average of 620 documents per month, which is relatively consistent with 2014 figures.

During the university examination period of Semester 1 and 2, the Student Guild provided students with a free healthy breakfast option prior to their exams. Each day students could stop by one of two Guild booths set up at strategic locations on campus to partake in a healthy breakfast. On each occasion students were extremely happy to receive breakfast, many mentioning they had forgotten to eat or had no time.

TAX SERVICE

ASSIGNMENT HELP

For six weeks beginning the start of Semester 2 the Student Guild once again engaged Cassidy and Edwards Accountants and Tax Agents to provide returns for Griffith students. During these six weeks the accountants had 277 appointments (an increase from 229 in 2014).

LEGAL SERVICE The Student Guild provides a free fortnightly legal advisory service through McInnes Wilson Lawyers. This service saw 25 students in Semester 1 and 14 in Semester 2. Additional phone consultations were available as necessary each semester.

The Assignment Help program aims to provide domestic and international students with editing and proofreading of assessment items before submission. Each semester 30 minute appointments from weeks 3-12 were offered at the Student Guild Student Support Hub. We had four regular consultants this year providing excellent service. In Semester 1 our Assignment Help consultants saw 400 students, up from 198 students in 2014. In Semester 2 they assisted an additional 351 students, up from 191 students in 2014. GOLD COAST ASSOCIATION OF POSTGRADUATES (GCAP) STEVE HARRIS

GCAP aims to create a positive postgraduate (higher degree research and coursework) student experience for Gold Coast students through the provision of academic services and support; opportunities for increased social engagement within the postgraduate community; and assistance in preparation for the transition from postgraduate study. In 2015, the GCAP Committee worked hard to develop programs and events for postgraduate students. Overall GCAP had 3,502 postgraduate students participate in 41 different events and programs. In 2015 the number of postgraduate students registered with GCAP remained consistent, seeing overall membership at 915 students actively engaged as members. With approximately 2,714 postgraduate students enrolled at the Gold Coast campus, this means that 30% of Griffith University Gold Coast postgraduate students participated in at least one GCAP event. On Thursday 21 May, GCAP held its Annual General Meeting to elect new committee members. We were pleased to welcome some great new students giving GCAP its largest committee of 14 to date, over which the Executive Committee below resided. EVENTS AND PROGRAMS MAJOR EVENTS This year GCAP hosted two major social events for postgraduate students - the Q1 cocktail event and annual themed ball. Both events were a huge success selling out at 350 students each for a total of 700 participants.

GCAP PRESENTS GCAP was proud to continue the GCAP Presents series of guest speakers on campus in 2015, though on a smaller scale than 2014. GCAP invited the founders of Barefoot Wines, Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey to share their story of success to Griffith students. We had 75 students and staff attend this very informative and inspirational event.

ASK ROULETTE In 2nd semester GCAP introduced an event called Ask Roulette. Taking place at the Uni Bar, Ask Roulette saw students meet up in a safe, social environment for engaging stories, random connections, and tons of laughter! Over the three events we had over 100 students take part. We look forward to watching this event grow in 2016.

NETWORKING LUNCHES Throughout Semesters 1 and 2 GCAP provided students with the opportunity for networking with other postgraduates via a fortnightly buffet lunch. With 14 lunches over the year, 1,400 students used this opportunity to meet others and share postgraduate experiences. These events still prove to be the foundation for engaging Gold Coast postgraduate students and increasing GCAP membership.  

EXPLORE AUSTRALIA

GCAP decided to draw back slightly on this program in 2015. In Semester 1, two excursions were offered to students. Both the Mt Tamborine Winery Tour and the Gold Coast Seaway Kayak Tour sold out with 42 students enjoying the experiences.

SUNDAY FUNDAY Another part of the GCAP social engagement plan included Sunday Funday. Under this initiative students were invited to a local area for beach activities and a BBQ. These events were also family friendly. Through the four Sunday Funday events, 90 students participated.

FRIDAY SOCIALS On the first Friday of every month GCAP arranged further networking for students via a social at the Uni Bar. Over the eight social events, 1,000 students participated, enjoying pizza, a beverage and good company!

FUNDING AND GRANTS The GCAP Funding and Grants program is designed to provide recognition for student achievement and opportunities for student development. Currently, GCAP offers three different programs, a Scholarships program, a Professional Development and Conference Funding (PDAC) program, and a Charity and Community Enhancement Fund (CCEF). Together these three programs provide over $60,000 in funding to Gold Coast postgraduate students.

SCHOLARSHIPS The GCAP Scholarship and Awards program looks to recognise and celebrate postgraduate students for past academic achievement, development, involvement and university engagement. The aim of the scholarship program is to encourage and motivate students to develop a wide skill set and maximise their experiences during their postgraduate study at Griffith University. Scholarships are available for a variety of achievements such as academic excellence, university contribution, or community involvement. Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. In 2015, 20 scholarships were again awarded to an increased annual value of $20,000.

CHARITY AND COMMUNITY ENHANCEMENT FUND The purpose of the GCAP Charity and Community Enhancement Fund (CCEF) program is to provide support for the following initiatives: 1. Assist postgraduate students to engage in community charity work both domestically and internationally; 2. Assist new and existing initiatives and organisation that benefit GCAP members; and, 3. Assist postgraduate students to implement programs that enhance the student experience of GCAP members Essentially, the CCEF aims to either (a) assist GCAP members who are helping others or (b) assist groups provide support and other opportunities to GCAP members. Examples of previous CCEF projects include a dental student who went to Papua New Guinea to provide emergency dental services and supporting students from Hope 4 Health on the Sumba Project. Overall in 2015, GCAP provided $20,000 to eight groups of students participating in domestic and overseas volunteer programs.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND CONFERENCE FUNDING The GCAP Professional Development and Conference Funding (PDAC) program aims to provide postgraduate students with support to attend academic conferences and take advantage of professional development opportunities. This initiative acts to benefit GCAP members by furthering their education, professional and personal development as students, through exposure to learning opportunities outside of Griffith University. In Semester 1 2015 GCAP provided 18 students with $12,140 in funding and in Semester 2, 22 students with $10,500 in funding.

ACADEMIC SERVICES ACADEMIC WORKSHOPS In Semester 2, GCAP introduced an Academic Workshop Series. Workshops ranged from improving reading and writing skills; Microsoft Excel skills; writing research grants; as well as how to successfully balance life and postgraduate study. The workshops were delivered by Griffith staff as well as GCAP’s two Academic Services Directors, Brittany and Tihana. We had 45 participants through the seven workshops. This is an exciting growth for GCAP and we look forward to expanding on these workshops in 2016.

ASSIGNMENT HELP The Student Guild’s Assignment Help program supported by GCAP was conducted from academic weeks 3 - 12 in each semester. After achieving poor numbers in 2014, we are happy to report an enormous increase in the use of this service. Overall, 107 postgraduate students accessed Assignment Help appointments during the year.

The Student Guild’s administration and reception team is the first point of call for many students with queries by phone, email and in-person. The services and support provided by administration staff are critical to student needs, particularly through orientation periods for commencing and continuing students when demand for accommodation, go cards and general information is at a peak. Administration coordinates and delivers a range of key services in a professional and welcoming environment to assist students on campus, as detailed below.

The Student Guild’s free transportation service provides commencing students with the opportunity to view accommodation in person before signing contractual agreements. Our service operates in the two weeks prior to week one in both semesters. In 2015 we transported over 120 students, including international students from Canada, Switzerland, Denmark, India, Nigeria, Germany and Sudan.

Our accommodation service provides Gold Coast students with accommodation options from fellow students and the community in conjunction with studentbuilt accommodation complexes and nearby Sphere Apartment living. In addition to the listings, we also provide students with key information from the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) regarding tenancy information, bond management, dispute resolution, investigation, policy and education services.

Our service has remained consistent with 2014 figures demonstrating that the majority of international students arrange permanent accommodation prior to arrival. Feedback from international and domestic students who have used our service appreciate having the chauffeured service provided. Accommodation packs are also provided by the Student Guild including accommodation options and Gold Coast information, such as maps and discounts. We distributed 150 accommodation packs to current and potential new students in 2015.

In 2015 we introduced online payment as an option for advertising accommodation (in addition to the physical listings via a noticeboard on campus) in an attempt to streamline processes and make the service more accessible. This online service addition was well received with 50% of students and non-students opting to submit their listings online instead of visiting our reception office.

EMPLOYMENT SERVICE The Student Guild assists the Griffith Careers and Employment service through advertising part-time and casual Gold Coast employment opportunities in the Careerboard on the Griffith website in conjunction with our on-campus noticeboard in G07. This free advertising service enables positions to be advertised for one month unless stated otherwise. In Semester 1, 61 casual positions were advertised to Griffith students and 42 positions in Semester 2. These figures have remained consistent with 2014.

ANCILLARY SERVICES GO CARD AND TRANSPORT go card purchases, top ups and expiry date changes are provided at our Student Guild reception. New go Cards continue to be a primary service at the commencement of each semester and concession go cards increased by 19% in 2015. The extension grace periods for concession cardholders would have contributed to the increase in concession go cards in conjunction with the termination of the Tertiary Transport Concession Card in November.

TUTORS The Tutor database on our website this year enabled 191 students to offer personalised tuition to fellow students and the community. Domestic students primarily offered tuition with 167 current students registered compared to 24 international students. The database increased by 12% when compared to 2014 figures - this increase can be attributed to the implementation of online registrations now available via our website.

LOCKERS Bike and general locker hire has remained consistent with 2014 figures with a total of 74 lockers hired (including 12 bike locker users). Our locker service provides students with long-term hire options, including vacation periods, as opposed to the short-term 12 hour locker hire available at each End of Trip Facility.

END OF TRIP FACILITIES The University’s End of Trip Facilities are located at G52, G40, G16 and G42 and continue to benefit students by providing showers, enclosed bike racks areas with toilets and 12 hour locker hire. The Student Guild continues to provide access to these facilities on behalf of the University. New access cards can be purchased at the Student Guild for a refundable deposit of $10.00. Students and staff can contact us by email or phone to have access added to their existing swipe card. A total of 71 new swipe cards were issued to new users in 2015 which were predominantly purchased in Semester 1.

COURT HIRE (TENNIS, VOLLEYBALL, BASKETBALL) Court bookings for The Pavilion (G32) enable exclusive hire of our tennis, basketball and volleyball court facilities for students and staff. Tennis court hire proved to be the most popular in 2015 with an increase hire rate of 32% from 2014. In an attempt to enhance the support for the Student Guild’s clubs and societies, the Student Guild offered free bookings to these groups in 2015, making up approximately 35% of total confirmed bookings. We continued the provision of free equipment hire.

ADMINISTRATION ENQUIRIES Student enquiries in person via our front-of-house reception staff somewhat declined in 2015 largely due to the introduction of online website payments for the majority of our services. This includes sport program and recreational trip registrations, event ticketing and ancillary services such as tutoring, accommodation and employment. Conversely, we saw a substantial increase in enquiries via social media and email.

University sport reaches all levels, from international and national level representation to local league games and social practice. The Student Guild supports students’ sporting needs through many different avenues, such as social sport, Northern and Australian University Games, clubs and local competitions.

Whether it is social or competitive, sport can enhance a student’s experience while studying at university. With this in mind our key objectives for 2015 were to facilitate and increase student participation in sport, diversify sports on campus, increase elite athlete representation, and improve participation as well as performance at a club and representative level.

scholarships and Griffith certainly benefited from their representation at the Australian University Games. Of the 20 scholarship athletes, 13 were a part of a gold medal pennant team, one silver, five bronze and one 4th placed team. Six of these student athletes were also presented with Green and Gold team selection.

The GUGC Sport scholarship program plays an important part in securing and providing financial support to high level student athletes. In an attempt to expand the scholarship program and offer ongoing support, 2nd semester scholarships were introduced in 2015. Overall 20 Griffith Gold Coast student athletes were afforded

The Australian University Games were again held on the Gold Coast where 290 participants from the Gold Coast campus competed in a combined Griffith University team; a 13% participation increase in comparison to the previous Games held on the Gold Coast in 2013. Griffith University was awarded seven pennants and finished an impressive 2nd of 42 universities, which is a best-ever result achieved by a Queensland university in the history of the event. Due to this result, in conjunction with Griffith’s performance across a range of Australian University Sport Championships and University Games throughout 2015, Griffith was also awarded a 2nd place Overall Champion result - again the best a Queensland University has ever placed.

At the Northern Uni Games in Toowoomba, Griffith University Gold Coast (GUGC) took away a combined team of 262 participants. PROGRAMS

RECREATION, COURSES & VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

The Programs Department aims to enhance the student experience by providing activities for students to engage in outside of their academic timetable, providing a platform to create relationships and obtain skills outside of the classroom. A key achievement in 2015 was the implementation of a new a Kids Holiday Club program, catering to Griffith University staff and students in need of childcare services during the public school holidays. In its infancy, the program saw 30 children registered. The Kids Holiday Club was predominantly hosted in the Function Centre where each child had access to colouring in, arts and crafts, a wide range of games, books and an interactive morning tea demonstration each day presented by a student from the Nutrition and Dietetics faculty. The children were also able to enjoy on campus facilities including the tennis and beach volleyball courts, as well as two offcampus excursions to mini golf and an indoor play centre. The Guild Crew Volunteer Program has grown exponentially throughout 2015, more than doubling in size. Student volunteers were able to take part in more frequent and recurring roles such as fortnightly Market Days and weekly Uni Bar activities. They were also afforded the opportunity to attend two team building and leadership camps throughout, providing personal and professional development and ultimately bringing them closer together as a team. After selling out the annual themed Trivia Night in 2014, the Programs and Sport departments combined this year to introduce a second event. Both events sold out with all funds raised going towards our student volunteer trip to Cambodia and assisting to send our athletes to Australian University Games. As an extension of the Guild Crew program, the Student Guild coordinated a trip for 25 student volunteers to travel to Battambang, Cambodia. While there each student had the opportunity to teach English in a primary school, paint and repair a school building, construct wash basins and assist in laying the foundations for a new ‘Community Action for Development’ school to be built. Not only did the volunteers make a physical difference in the Battambang community, they impacted the lives of the local school children by improving the quality of their learning environment and their ability and confidence to speak the English language.

SOCIAL & CULTURAL EVENTS CAMERON SHERWOOD Events Manager

The Student Guild Events Department is responsible for providing a wide variety of different cultural and social events, providing students with the chance to socialise and interact outside the classroom. The Events Department aims to provide high quality events tailored specifically to meet the needs and wants of our students.

Events in 2015 hit the ground running with a massive O-Week, over 7,000 students attended Student Guild activities in the first three days alone and 3 of the 4 evening events were at capacity. The fortnightly Market Days continued to be one of the most popular on campus events. The introduction of the Second Hand Text book Fair and the continuing Volunteer Fair provided a valuable service to students. Harmony Day and Sustainability Fair aim to illustrate the amazing work being done in these areas on campus. In its new home in the Events Centre at the Gold Coast Turf Club, Race Day was able

to accommodate 2,000 attendees, selling out and becoming the largest Student Guild Race Day in the event’s 17 year history. Now established as the premium black tie event on the events calendar, the sold out Guild Ball doubled in attendee numbers from 2014 and really lived up to its reputation as one of the ‘must attend’ events of the year. Tickets to the themed Uni Bar parties became the hottest commodities around with all 5 events selling out in advance, the frenzy for tickets peaked with the Halloween party selling out in just over 24 hours.

Joining a club on campus is a great way to meet likeminded people, share interests, build networks, make friends and make a difference. On the Gold Coast campus, Student Guild affiliated clubs include academic, cultural, special interest groups as well as recreational sport to competitive sporting clubs. In 2015 there were 43 cultural clubs with 4,630 members and 30 sporting clubs with 1,669 members creating an overall total of 76 clubs with 6,299 members.

The Student Guild has a primary role in providing all clubs with financial support and administrative guidance, enabling the continued improvement of club structures for the benefit of members and increasing diversity to cater for student needs. Clubs are provided with an opportunity to recruit new members at the Sign-on Days held at the start of each semester. In Semester one 41 cultural and 28 Sporting clubs had a stall and in semester two 28 cultural and 21 sporting clubs were in attendance. The success of a club is largely due to work of the administrative committee. To aid this, the Student Guild held its second Clubs Conference in 2015 with guest speakers covering topics such as financial management and club governance, whilst Student Guild staff addressed the processes and resources of the Student Guild. An additional club funding scheme was also introduced in 2015 enabling funds to be allocated to clubs and club activities, assisting clubs and their members outside of the existing club grants and subsidies. Through the additional funding application process it enabled the Student Guild to support six Hope4Heath students to travel to Sumba for a health based project, assist the A Capella Choir Club host the Voices in Paradise event engaging high school and University students, provide Toastmasters with Communication and Leadership Skills certifications for members, contribute to the GU Pride Society for Pride Day events, send a United Nations student to attend the World Model United Nations Conference in Italy, assist two Medical Student Association members to travel to Ubuntu on a medical volunteering expedition, and finally, assist the Planning and Environmental club with catering for a first-time personal development event.

At the annual Guild Awards many outstanding clubs were recognised with 14 new awards introduced in 2015 including two major awards, Recreational Sporting Club of the Year and Recreational Cultural Club of the Year. A summary of all club awards is presented at the end of this report. Many new sport partnerships came to fruition in 2015 to help strengthen and increase the sustainability of existing clubs and branch out into new sporting areas. Musgrave

Mustangs Football Club became the home of Griffith teams in the Gold Coast Football competition with over 60 students playing for the club. The Surfers Paradise Demons Football Club now has many Griffith students playing for the club with the north end of the ground now affectionately known as the “university end�. GUGC Sport also partnered with Southport Surf Life Saving Club, teaching beach skills and keeping uni students involved with the beach culture of the Gold Coast. The GUGC Baseball Club continues to grow particularly due to a new partnership with the Robina Braves, providing a value add for students through facilities and other combined resources. Continuing valued partnerships include Griffith Uni Colleges Knights Rugby Union Club, Parkwood Sharks Rugby League Club, Southport Labrador Cricket Club, Surfers Paradise Rowing Club and North Gold Coast Roosters Hockey Club. In 2015 GUGC Sport also implemented a new level of funding specific to recreational sporting clubs, providing additional financial support for training to compete at various competitions at a higher level. Many clubs benefited from this with improved results at a local and university sport level. We also welcomed many new sporting clubs including Cube, Golf, Lawn Bowls, Lift Bootcamp, Mixed Martial Arts and Surf Life Saving. Each club had a successful first year and has increased the number of diverse sporting clubs on offer at the Gold Coast campus.

The Uni Bar always had a goal to provide an outstanding non-academic area on campus. The opening of the completely revamped and refitted Uni Bar and Function Centre in early 2015 has provided us with an exciting, beautifully designed space that should more than meet the expectation of both students and staff. We have only received positive feedback on how good the Uni Bar looks and feels, and this has come from visitors as well as those people on campus. On a weekly basis the Uni Bar provided activities and games for students to participate in outside of the classroom. We experienced positive engagement in 2015 as outlined in the participation numbers below.

The ever popular Uni Bar Social Club reached a total of 851 members in 2015, a 2% increase from the previous year. These members really appreciated the discounted food and beverages and also benefited by free entry into the weekly Social Club Draw. In 2015 the Function Centre held a total of 127 events for Griffith University clubs and departments as well as external clients. These events were held across the Uni Bar and Function Centre with some events also held on the new Terrace area. This was a significant increase from the previous year with the new venue being the primary draw card for event organisers.

In closing I would like to thank all our valued patrons and clients who visited the new Uni Bar in 2015. JEANETTE SHEPHARD Manager

2015 was another great year for Uni Fitness. Once again we were excited to welcome new and existing members to the facility and help them achieve their health and fitness goals. This year Uni Fitness was given a facelift with a colour change to the interior and exterior of the facility – a bold royal blue to match the Uni Fitness uniform. Uni Fitness and GUGC were again proud participants of the Mother’s Day Classic – a charity event held in May to raise money for breast cancer research. We were also honoured to receive the award for the largest tertiary team for the third consecutive year. A huge congratulations must go to all those who participated. 2015 saw the introduction of the much anticipated SpinA-Thon which saw members cycling as many classes as they could in a month for their chance to win a bike of their own! The promotion was a great success and enjoyed by long-time spinners and newcomers alike. We look forward to hosting the event again in 2016! As in previous years, the Uni Fitness 2015 group exercise timetables had a great mix of classes for members of all ages and abilities. We introduced the very successful Les Mills Grit Series in Semester 2 which was well received amongst members and visitors. The attached table sets out statistical information for attendance and membership for 2015 compared to 2014. We have commenced a complete review of the Gym facility to address those areas showing a decrease from 2014 to 2015. Uni Fitness looks forward to assisting all Griffith students and staff to achieve their health and fitness goals in 2016.

THE UNI STORE DEBBY HAGUE Manager

The Uni Store was opened in 2014 with the express purpose of providing products and services covering a variety of different areas which meet the wants and needs of students and staff while on campus. In 2015 we saw substantial growth across nearly all sectors of the business which is a good indicator that we are meeting the needs of our customers. Total revenue went up a very healthy 15 % between 2014 and 2015. The different sectors include stationery, merchandise, food and drink, confectionery, technical lines, newspapers, magazines and cards and an ever increasing amount of interesting and beautifully displayed giftware. The gift and souvenir figures for 2015 were more than double that of 2014. This is due to continually extending our gift range, seeking new suppliers and working out what sells. It is proving to be an extremely popular category for customers seeking that special last minute gift idea. Woodwick Candles have been an absolute stand out item and is our top selling giftware line at 522 for the year. The Bulk Food Range was a huge hit for 2015, with substantial growth following the introduction of healthier treats. We have extended both our snack and drink range to include a bigger variety of gluten free and high protein treats after listening to our customers and implementing what they want. Our Perfect Fruit which is a gluten free, fat free, dairy free, cold fruit whip has been hugely successful. The installation of a larger Perfect Fruit machine, which now holds two flavors, along with our free sampling on Market Days saw us become the number one seller of Perfect Fruit for the whole of Australia during the busy semester period. We have instigated a number of loyalty card programs including Woodwick Candles, Perfect Fruit, Giant Microbes and have just recently had Lion come on board with a loyalty card to promote their Dare milk products. The take up on these has exceeded expectations and it is obvious something our customers like to have.

We have launched our own newly designed, higher quality brand of Griffith merchandise and the feedback has all been very positive. The most successful lines have been the new hoodies, t-shirts, duffle bags and pens. We are currently working with suppliers and will continue to broaden our own Griffith range of merchandise. 2015 saw the introduction of high quality technology lines such as the Fuse earphone range and Walk n Talk mobile accessory range. You know you are on the right track when sales go up by 437%. We are always looking at ways to improve our customer service. An example of going the extra mile was offering free Christmas wrapping for all students and staff leading up to Christmas. We also provided special events including a discount day in December and extended trading hours to encourage customers to shop in their own local Campus store and enjoy the experience. We look


forward to repeating this in 2016 and making it bigger and better. Facebook was used extensively in 2015 to run games and competitions throughout the year with lots of prizes. We now have close to 600 likes and this is continuing to grow. At The Uni Store we like to keep up with the latest trends such as grown-up colouring books and a modern range of lunch bags. We have also had the opportunity to support smaller local businesses with products such as Little Box Of‌, Puzzling Puzzles, which has a range of wooden games and puzzles, and a new local chocolate range which is absolutely divine. Management recently took a trip to Annabel Trends in Burleigh Heads where we saw a lot of our Australian products being hand made in their factory which was great to see.

We have also introduced lines from Sistaco, a not for profit organisation supporting a women’s refuge. We stock their funky nail polish, which is not only great quality but also changes colour in the sun. One of the most satisfying things about working in The Uni Store is the amount of feedback we get on how good the shop looks. We are always looking at different ways of merchandising and changing stock so that it looks fresh and interesting. I would like to thank all of my hard working staff for all their efforts during the year and also the management of the Student Guild. We wish to thank all our customers for their continued support. We continued to grow in 2015 and we look forward to an even better year in 2016.

VILLAGE CAFE SHAUN EDIE Manager

Village Café is located on the south side of the Griffith University Campus across from Smith Street and services a diverse range of customers including; -------

Griffith University Village residents International students from GELI and the newly renamed Griffith College Researchers and staff from nearby research centres Students and staff from the Queensland Academy of Health Sciences High School Griffith University students and staff Neighbouring residents

We are the only retail space in the immediate precinct and we supply a wide range of café lines including coffee, drinks, sandwiches, burgers and other hot foods. We also stock a range of convenience items including snack foods, groceries and stationery. Over 50% of our customers are international students from countries including USA, Canada, China, Korea, Japan, Germany, France, England and South Africa. 2015 saw a revenue increase of $82,600 (17%) which was a really good result considering the Village was a building site in the early part of 2015 with limited access. Overall, there was an increase of 10,500 transactions (14%) and an average spend increase per customer from $7.10 in 2014 to $7.31 in 2015 (3%). The Village Café is continuously striving to meet our customers’ wants by introducing innovative new products, providing value for money and good customer service in a safe and friendly environment. A decision was made during 2014 to build an undercover collaboration space outside the existing shop. This project was completed in March 2015 and the feedback on the refit and makeover has been very positive and has been regularly described as a great use of space. During the planning stages of the collaboration space, the University began construction of a multi storied car park with a capacity of some 1,300 car spaces directly

opposite the Village Café. With this in mind, it was decided to add additional resources including a Coffee Kart previously located in the Uni Bar. The Coffee Kart is located within the collaboration space and has been set up to cater for the anticipated additional foot traffic from the new car park. This effectively creates an “express” service area for students and staff passing through wanting a coffee before classes. After a lot of research and communication with Griffith University’s technical department, it was decided to expand Griffith University’s Wi-Fi network to include the collaboration space. This was one of several options being explored but was considered by far and away the best solution. This work was completed in November 2015 and students are now benefitting from having a free Wi-Fi network being accessible for all students to utilise. I would like to thank all my staff, especially my Assistant Manager, Casey Haslemore, the staff of Griffith University Village, namely Ky Lower and Marie Wilson, and the Student Guild staff, particularly Dennis Bollington, Commercial Manager, and Wayne Watt, General Manager, for their ongoing support throughout 2015, and I am confident we can continue to grow in 2016.

MARKETING JESSICA BROWN Marketing Manager

The Student Guild Marketing Department is primarily responsible for developing and delivering the marketing strategies and publications for all Student Guild departments. Following a successful rebrand in 2014, it was critical to position the Student Guild as the primary delivery agent for sporting, cultural, recreational and advocacy based services on the Gold Coast campus. To achieve this we conducted a review of current processes and systems. We identified the need to improve the accessibility of our programs and services, via improved online platforms.

In February 2015 we launched a new Student Guild website, a significant improvement from previous, enabling online payments and a user friendly and mobile responsive experience for students. We also implemented a new booking system for Student Support and Advocacy appointments (linked to the website), and other Student Guild services including the intercampus bus, legal service and assignment help service. This certainly proved successful with the quantity of bookings increasing across the board, particularly for assignment help which saw a 93% increase in the number of student bookings from 2014. In addition, we launched online ticketing for the majority of our Student Guild events. This contributed to a 20% increase in overall event participation from 2014 and ongoing, positive feedback from students. The relaunch of the Student Guild’s student publication, Getamungstit, was another key objective in 2015, to address a number of issues with the magazine’s format, content, purpose and direction. Getamungstit lacked a clear vision, was essentially a Student Guild brochure and did not include student content other than mandatory club reports. Its readership was comprised mostly of its contributors - club executives, Student Guild staff and occasional student submissions. Following a detailed review, a student focus group and a proposal accepted by the Student Guild Board, edition one of the brand new magazine (The O’Week Edition) was released in April 2015. The purpose of the new magazine was to appeal to the majority of the campus population, not just those that engaged with Guild clubs or activities. Key objectives included: -- improve the quality and content in order to produce a magazine that students want to pick up and enjoy reading -- include content that is of academic, social and general interest to students

-- to increase student readership -- to maximise student authorship of magazine content -- to establish a student team to drive the publication of each edition -- provide feedback on student work to develop their writing skills In accordance with the above objectives, we formed a new partnership with the Queensland Conservatorium of Art’s design studio, Liveworm. Getamungstit is now entirely designed by students with up to eight different students designing the magazine each edition. We also established an Editorial Team comprised of two staff editors and four student editors. The student editors shape the magazine and drive the publication process, liaising with students to coordinate content including, but not limited to, 18 registered contributors.

The Student Guild was recognised for the successful relaunch of Getamungstit at the 2015 CampusLink Awards for Excellence in Campus Service, as part of the Tertiary Access Group (TAG) Conference, when presented with the award for ‘Most Successful Printed Publication’. This award category comprised anything from annual reports to cook books to student guides, produced by member institutions Australia wide.
