Herbs at home Three easy herbs you can grow at home.

The sun is shining, the birds are singing which means it’s time to get out those gardening gloves! Not everyone is born with the gift of the green thumb. If you think it is about time to give it a go, why not try growing these three heavenly herbs?

According to the Royal Horticultural Society, the best time to get out your trowel and start sowing those seeds is early Spring. Herbs can be grown in the home or outdoors - all they need is sunlight, moisture-retentive soil and regular watering!

Select pots with drainage holes and pop them on a tray on the window sill.

Sage is one of our favourites despite it often being overlooked! It pairs perfectly with a variety of meat-based dishes (or meatalternatives) as well as Italian dishes such as pasta and gnocchi – yum!

RAVISHING ROSEMARY The perfect addition to Mediterranean dishes, this evergreen shrub is easy to grow all year round. Use in both savoury and sweet dishes.

MARVELLOUS MINT Of course, we had to include a herb that makes cocktail hour more flavoursome and fun! Mint is one of the most iconic herbs. Use it in anything from a minty mojito, a classic G&T to dips, pasta, pesto’s and more!

Easy DIY bird feeder STEP BY STEP TUTORIAL At Weird Fish, we love supporting charities that make a difference, one of our long term partners are the RSPB, a national wildlife charity. We spread the word on the fantastic work they do through our men’s graphic tees, our Artist T-Shirts.

With the RSPB we are hoping to inspire you all to encourage wildlife into your garden! This is a great one to get the kids involved in and aware of the nature and wildlife around them. Here is how to make an easy DIY Bird Feeder from a plastic bottle – yay for recycling and repurposing plastic!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

Here is what you will need to get started and make your very own bird feeder!

Make sure all your plastic bits and bobs are clean (plastic bottles, yoghurt pots and milk cartons)!

Plastic bottles such as a plastic water bottle Birdseed ( if you have a nut allergy please be careful and ensure your seed is nut-free) A good pair of scissors Plastic yoghurt pots or a milk carton String, Wire or Twine

Make a few small holes in the bottom of your feeder to allow any rainwater to drain away.

If your feeder starts to wear out or the food in it goes mouldy, recycle it and make another one! Remember to keep your feeders well stocked, especially in winter. Birds come to rely on them and will go hungry if you forget.

Cut a hole in the side large enough to allow a free flow of seeds, but in such a way that it won’t all fall out on the ground in the slightest puff of wind, and won’t get wet if it rains.

Hang it with wire, or even a piece of strong string from a tree or your washing line.

The Tallahassee Way back in the summer of 2016, we launched what would become the iconic, 100% organic cotton jersey dress of your dreams, and yes, your prayers have been answered, this dress has pockets!

Our Tallahassee dress is a year on year favourite. It is practical, stylish and can be worn no matter the weather.

Our design director Beth shares the tale that ended in the creation of the perfect day dress.

‘

I was packing for a trip to Tallahassee in Florida.

It was going to be hot and as a sun worshipper I was excited to soak up some vitamin D. Packing however was not going well. My bed had been submerged by a sea of clothes. I’m organised when I pack, I knew I needed outfits that were perfect for exploring Cascades park, visiting Lake Overstreet, going out for dinner, going to museums, shopping… essentially, I was trying to cram most of my summer wardrobe in my case.

When I was back at work, this experience kept nagging at me. I wish I’d had something comfortable, completely versatile, and vibrant, generally to complement my lifestyle.

Sunny days makes me think of day dresses and cooling organic cotton is the perfect fabric for warmer weather. Comfort is key to all our designs, so the shape is designed to flatter and the soft fabric will make it feel like a favourite from day one. Prints require minimal accessorising, so in my opinion, they’re always a winner. I can complete the outfit by adding a pump or sandal and a block colour bag. For the Spring and Summer, prints are the perfect way to add a vibrant pop of colour.’

Come to a seated position, either on the floor or on a cushion, and cross the legs Relax the shoulders, jaw and face. Feel the sitting bones rooting down towards the ground and lift the crown of the head up towards the sky.

We spoke with Chelsea Baker from Bloom Studio and Wellbeing in Cheltenham to find out the four stretches you should be doing every day to help with your posture and wellbeing as well as a little bit about her and her studio!

Come to a table-top position.

As you breathe in, tilt your pelvis back and feel your tail bone lift up towards the sky. At the same time, lift your heart forwards. Draw the shoulders back to feel a deeper opening across the chest.

As you breathe out, think about scooping your pelvis back underneath you and bringing your chin towards your chest.

You can push the ground away to feel a deeper stretch.

Continue to flow from one position to the other, breathing in and out through the nose.

Feel free to have a wiggle around here! Explore where your body wants to move to, allow the spine to move.

Bring your feet hip-width distance.

Fold forwards over the legs.You can bend your knees as much as you like, which is a lot kinder on the lower back!

Either bring the hands to the floor or hold on to opposite elbows for a bit of a ‘dangle’.Breathe and hold for 5 - 10 breaths. You can stay still or gently sway from side to side.

BENEFITS: Stretches the hamstrings and calves, can be calming, releases tensions in the neck.

WATCH OUT FOR: Back injury - bend your knees! You can place your hands on a wall with your arms parallel to the floor.

BENEFITS: Massages the spine, increases mobility, stretches the back and neck, increases circulation of spinal fluid.

WATCH OUT FOR: Wrist pain - you can make fists instead of palms on the floor. Knee injury - you can do this spinal movement sat on the floor or a chair.

Come to hands and knees.

Bring your big toes to touch, and your knees wide Sit your bottom back towards your heels. (You can pop a cushion on top of your heels if this is not accessible for you) Either reach your arms forward, bring them by your sides or you can bring your hands underneath your forehead. (Use a cushion to bring the ground closer to your forehead so that you can comfortably rest your head) Stay for 30 seconds or up to 10 minutes!

BENEFITS: Stretches the back, hips, ankles and, knees and chest.

Can be restful and calming for the mind and body.

WATCH OUT FOR: Knee/ankle injuries - you can place a blanket inbetween your knees, or substitute for another resting pose. Back/hip discomfort - you can bring your knees closer together. Explore where they feel best.

CHELSEA BAKER FROM BLOOM STUDIO AND WELLBEING Chelsea Baker from Bloom Studio and Wellbeing in Cheltenhen.

How did you get into Yoga?

I started going to yoga classes when I lived in Australia in 2016 - not long ago at all! My dad had very recently passed away, and I was looking for a way to exercise and keep my mind off things!

I returned to the UK in 2017, ready and raring to teach. I was very fresh off the yoga boat! I have It was something that just immediately made since continued to take training classes, as there me feel better. My amazing teacher would read is always so much more for me to learn. I remember thinking most of all, I wish I had this when I was a teenager!

When did you decide to launch your Yoga studio?

Why is yoga so beneficial?

The physical part of yoga is great for both our bodies and our minds.

Stretching releases tension in the body, which can build up over time - especially when we are sat down all day or experiencing stress.

Yoga postures can build strength and flexibility, whilst its philosophical background and the focus on the breath is what sets it aside from other exercise classes.

When we focus on our breath, either moving from one posture to another or trying to stay in a posture for a bit longer, we are aware of the present moment. As we build this awareness, we become much more in tune with our bodies, and it can help to quiet our busy minds.

I had the opportunity to launch my studio last year, which was so exciting.

We opened Bloom in August 2020, after the first lockdown. I wanted to create a space that was, most of all, welcoming and inclusive.

I have so often heard people say that they don’t go to yoga because they aren’t flexible enough, find studios intimidating or, worst of all, that they don’t have the right clothes!! It is so important to me that yoga and wellness are accessible to all, regardless of body type, age, background or clothes that you wear! Yoga can be done anywhere, wearing anything, by anyone.

Bloom is a space that offers classes in yoga, dance, fitness, meditation and other things that help us feel good in mind, body and soul!

We regularly run special events, and we have a cafe downstairs where you can chat after/before class! We also have a lovely treatment room from The real benefit is when we see this mindful where therapists practice massage, acupuncture, awareness come into play when we’re going reiki and more! about our daily lives, not just on our yoga mat!

BERRYLICIOUS SUMMER FRUITS ARCTIC ROLL A classic dish best served with a splash of sunshine. This delicious Arctic Roll is the perfect dessert to enjoy on the porch with a chilled glass of white while watching the sunset on a warm Spring evening.

Method

1) Heat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4.

Crack the eggs into a stand mixer (or use a large mixing bowl and an electric hand mixer).

Add 120g of the sugar and a pinch of salt, then whisk at a high speed for a few minutes until the mixture has tripled in volume and is nice and fluffy!

2) Take a large handful of blueberries (the more the merrier) and cut each in half (set aside the rest). Dot them around the lined baking sheet, cut-side down.

3) Add the lemon zest to the egg mixture and whisk for another minute. Sift in the flour, then fold in using a large spoon to keep in as much air as possible. Evenly spoon the batter over the blueberries, then transfer the tray to the oven.

Bake for 13 minutes until golden and cooked through.

4) Sprinkle one of the 2 large sheets of baking paper with 10g of the remaining caster sugar.

Flip out the cooked sponge onto the un-sugared paper, then flip it back onto the sugared paper so the blueberry-stained sponge faces down.

Starting with the long side, roll up the spongelike a swiss roll, using the baking paper to help you. Leave to cool for 30 minutes. Put the ice cream in the fridge to soften slightly.

5) Once the sponge has cooled, unroll it and spread the jam all over. Put the frozen berries in a food processor and whizz with the remaining 60g sugar until smooth. Dot the frozen berry mixture over the sponge with generous spoonful’s of ice cream, fresh berries and the remaining blueberries (set aside some berries for serving). Leave a border around the filling,

INGREDIENTS 3 large free-range eggs 190g caster sugar 150g fresh blueberries Finely grated zest 1 lemon, plus a squeeze of juice 80g plain flour 500g tub good-quality vanilla ice cream 125g berry jam 250g frozen mixed berries 250g fresh mixed berries, any large ones halved 50g dark chocolate Fresh, unsprayed rose petals for decorating

so when you start to roll it up there’s room for the filling to spread out a little. Reroll the sponge around the filling so the 2 long edges meet.

Wrap the baking paper around the roll and twist the ends so it looks like a big Christmas cracker, then pop in the freezer for 4 hours.

6) When ready to serve, toss the remaining berries in a bowl with a little lemon juice. Shave the chocolate into curls over the arctic roll, dot over the remaining berries and the rose petals, then enjoy.

BANANA SPLIT MINI PAVLOVAS A great dessert to serve at birthday parties, BBQ’s and other gatherings, these Banana Split Mini Pavlovas are the perfect portion!

INGREDIENTS 300 ml thickened cream 250 ml fudge ice cream sauce 8 meringue nests 2 firm, ripe bananas 8 tsp crushed peanuts

Method 1) Beat the cream in a small bowl with an electric mixer until soft peaks form.

2) Pour the fudge sauce into a small saucepan. Stir over low heat until warm.

3) Just before serving, place 8 meringue

If you have a nut allergy, skip the nuts!

nests onto serving plates. Spoon the cream into nests. Top with sliced bananas and drizzle over the warm fudge sauce.

4) Sprinkle each with 1 teaspoon of crushed peanuts.

BLUEBERRY BREAKFAST ICE LOLLIES These breakfast ice lollies are great for any time of day and are quick and easy to make on those hot Spring days! They are also a great option to help break the habit of skipping breakfast as they are light and delicious!

Method

1) Pour the blueberries into a small microwaveable bowl and heat in the microwave for 30-40 seconds, or until the blueberries have slightly softened but are still keeping their shape. Leave to one side for a moment.

2) Weigh the granola into a small bowl and place it to one side.

3) Now add the yoghurt to the bowl of blueberries and stir to combine. If you wish to use the optional honey, now is the time to add it.

4) Layer the ingredients into the ice lolly moulds. First of all, spoon a third of the

yoghurt and blueberry mixture into each mould. Take half of the Granola and sprinkle a little into each mould. Use another third of the yoghurt and blueberries to create another layer. Now it’s time to add the final layer of granola and last of all, add the final third of the yoghurt and blueberries, leaving enough space to insert the lolly sticks.

5) Place the breakfast ice lollies into the freezer for at least 4 hours, or until frozen solid.

6) Take the ice lollies from the freezer around 15 minutes before you are ready to serve. This will make it easy to remove them from the lolly moulds.

TEQUILA SUNRISE

I’ll drink to that!

TEQUILA SUNRISE Watch the sunset while drinking a sunrise! A zesty cocktail made to warm the soul on those cool spring evenings. This recipe serves two!

Method

INGREDIENTS 4tsp grenadine 100ml tequila 2 tbsp triple sec 2 large oranges or 4 small oranges, juiced 1 Lemon, juiced 2 maraschino cherries to serve

Pour grenadine into two glasses (2tsp per glass) and set aside.

Using a cocktail shaker add ice, tequila, triple sec and the fruit juices and get shaking! Pour the concoction into the glasses, trying to avoid disturbing the grenadine layer. Garnish each glass with a maraschino cherry and enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

If you like Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain.

250ml coconut milk 250ml pineapple juice

We would much rather be in the sunshine listening to this 70’s classic, signing along with a Pina Colada in hand!

CLASSIC MINTY MOJITO Put that homegrown mint to good use and make a classic mint mojito, the perfect pitcher to share with family and friends!

Method

INGREDIENTS 6 limes 4 tbsp granulated sugar 4-5 mint sprigs Ice 350ml white rum 600ml sparkling water

Chop each lime into 6ths and pop into a large pitcher. Add in the sugar and squish the lime with a muddler to get all the juices out. Using the leaves from the sprigs of mint, rub them with your hands – this will help bring out that minty flavour, then add them into the jug! Add in as much ice as you desire and pour in the rum and sparkling water, mix and you’re done!
