Harry’s dancefloor challenge Harry Phillips (Local Market Negotiator) aka “Vinnie Barbarino” together with dance partner Evita Dapsevica aka “hot stuff” danced the Samba and then the “disco jive” group dance at this years 1970s inspired Guernsey Dancefloor Challenge.

because my grandma is a huge fan of strictly, so I’m hoping to impress her with some dancing skills. I’m also hoping to show that those with size 12 feet are able to bust some moves and look half decent!”

Non-dancers are paired with dancers and “challenged” to learn two technical ballroom routines over a three-month period and then perform them to their friends, family and the public. Dances are delivered in a unique style and music theme each year. Dancers need to have a lot of courage stepping into the challenge, and give real commitment to learn in such a short period of training.

Over the past 15 years The Dancefloor Challenge has raised thousands of pounds, which is split between the Guernsey Amateur Dancesport Association (GADA) and another charity, which this year is Friends of Frossard.

Harry commented, “I’m a fairly confident person in general, but I must say this is quite out of my comfort zone, so I’m pretty nervous. I think at the same time it’s for a brilliant cause and I’m looking forward to learning how to dance.

Natalie Wrigley aka “soul sister” and her professional dance partner Mickey Haimes aka “soul man” danced splendidly over the 2 day competition to become the overall winners of this year’s challenge. Natalie has been an annual fundraiser for the Charity.

Headteacher Mrs Judd said, “It was a lovely surprise to receive these tasty gifts. Like everyone, we have had ups and downs in getting our jobs done over the course of the pandemic, but the team here have really gone the extra mile to keep the children motivated engaged and up to date on everything, and it is so nice to have that appreciated.”

WOMEN AS THE NEW FACE OF WEALTH: THREE FACTS ABOUT THE BOOST OF WOMEN’S WEALTH ACROSS THE GLOBE According to consultancy group Boston Consulting Group (BCG), women now hold an average of 40% of global wealth, and this could rise at a compound annual growth rate of 7.2% by 2023, outpacing the 5.2% compound annual growth rate projected for men.

Why should this matter for women and their assets? As women become wealthier, their influence is growing. They are beginning to redefine areas that have traditionally been focused on, and dominated by, men.

JEAN-LUC LE TOCQ

Head of Private Banking, Guernsey

Wealth creation among women is growing; there has been an unprecedented increase over the last decade in the amount of wealth earned and controlled by women. Jean-Luc Le Tocq of Julius Baer Guernsey sets out why this makes it more important than ever to improve financial literacy and active wealth planning among women.

Here are three facts regarding empowering women’s wealth management and promoting female financial literacy:

1. Women are savvy investors but there is a lack of financial confidence: studies suggest that despite their tendency to underestimate their financial knowledge, women as a group tend to outperform men A number of studies over time suggest that women tend to outperform men in their investments. The University of Warwick, for instance, tracked investors’ performance for three years. Its findings in the 2018 research paper ‘Are women better investors than men?’ indicated that women outperformed men at investing by 1.8%. Men were likely to pick more speculative stocks, while female investors had a longer-term perspective. Researchers indicate that behaviourally women tend to be less confident about their investing than men, and are therefore more likely to be risk averse (47% vs 39% for men, based on 2015 industry research by SigFig, the Wall Street Journal and Vanguard) and open to advice (64% vs 56% for men).

2. Women have less earning power compared to men: the gender gap in wages translates into wealth and retirement gaps

Women earn less than men, with women earning 81 cents for every US dollar earned by men on an uncontrolled basis (this measures median salary for all men and all women), according to our 2021 Women and Wealth report. Even on a controlled basis (measuring median salary for men and women with the same job and qualifications), women still earn less, at 98 cents for every US dollar earned by men. Part of this is because women lose earnings with time out of the workforce as they spend more time than men raising children. This appears to be the case even in Scandinavia, where social policies are more generous and culture more egalitarian. Over time, the disparity has resulted in yawning wealth and retirement gaps that are hard to close.

3. Women have a longer life expectancy: they live longer, and hence need to plan for a longer retirement Women live longer than men on average. According to the international organisation Population Reference Bureau, women outlive men in almost every society. In more developed countries, the average life expectancy at birth is 79 years for women, 72 years for men. In less developed countries, where high maternal mortality reduces the difference in longevity, women can expect to live an average of 66 years, compared with 63 years for men. Yet, women may not be prepared for a longer retirement, with only 53% of women reportedly starting to save for retirement vs 65% for men. The facts are clear; women are generating more wealth and are gaining more control of their money. To maximise this trend there is a need for more active participation by women in managing their wealth. Guernsey Market continues to go from strength to strength As we enter the spring of 2022, the shift of the global landscape we have seen over the last couple of years continues and the Guernsey Market continues to go from strength to strength. As the world recovers from COVID19 and learns to live with the disease as part of the “new normal” our eyes are keenly fixed on the conflict in Ukraine and the uncertainty this brings. At times where the markets are at unease, in times of turmoil, we often see people turning to property as a way to diversify their portfolios and take advantage of the typically secure Guernsey market that has held its value well over the years.

The dramatic increases in demand for Local Market property has helped to invigorate the Open Market up from the bottom up as more and more locally qualified applicants (either through birth or through licence) have seen the benefits of owning Open Market homes. This has reduced the number of “entry level” Open Market properties which are available and increased applicant competition at the lower end of the market. There is still a premium for Open Market property and locally qualified purchasers see the benefits of paying a premium to have access to higher price ceilings as they seek to add value to the

properties they acquire. As the world gets back to normal and supply chains begin to recover we are seeing an influx of applicants to the island to fullfil the demand that has been building since mid 2020. Spring brings about a fresh influx of new applicants to the market and the team have been inundated with valuation requests and new instructions coming to the market. If you are considering selling your property or would like to discuss your options in confidence do not hesitate to contact us, and one of the team would be delighted to talk you through your options.

OPEN MARKET

Collas Crill launches new planning application service Collas Crill has launched a new planning application service for homeowners in Guernsey and Jersey considering applying for planning permission.

Chris Crew Senior Planning Consultant, Collas Crill T: 01481 723191

Over the last two years Channel Island homeowners have responded to restrictions on travel, increased home working and a rising property market by driving a boom in home extension, remodelling and improvement projects. The time it takes to actually start a project has increased over the same period. Paul Nettleship, Partner and Head of Property Law in Guernsey, said: ‘Appointing an architect, if required, seeking initial advice and securing necessary planning and building regulation permissions, as well as factoring in the availability of contractors, tradespeople and materials all take time that can be outside homeowners’ control. ‘This can lead to delays, escalating costs and added stress for the homeowner and, in the worst case scenario, could mean that a project needs to be scaled back or abandoned altogether.’ The new service will be led by Senior Planning Consultant, Chris Crew, and brings together his and the Channel Islands property teams’ planning expertise and detailed knowledge of the application process. Chris joined Collas Crill in April 2022 to offer specialist planning advice. He is a Chartered Member of The Royal Town 20

|

Planning Institute and has more than 17 years’ experience gained in the UK and Guernsey. He joined the firm from the States of Guernsey Planning Service where he worked as a Senior Planning Officer for eight years. The new planning service offered by Collas Crill will ensure all the necessary plans, drawings and supporting information are collated, and the property team will complete and submit the planning application on the client’s behalf. ‘This planning application service allows us to take the strain out of what can be a stressful process and is a natural extension of our offering to clients. It ensures that the application is right first time, avoiding additional delays and costs and makes it more likely that

It is one of the largest teams in Guernsey and includes a dedicated UK real estate offering. Where were you at midnight? Guernsey residents are lucky! We often enjoy sunny summer days, clear and crisp winter days, colourful autumn days and the beautiful days of spring on our lovely Island. Despite this, we are often asked by our clients how many days they are able to spend in the UK visiting family, friends, attending sporting or cultural events, staying for extended periods in a “pied a terre” or indeed working in the UK. A frequent and common misconception is that spending no more than 90 days in the UK, in a UK tax year, is all that is required to remain not UK tax resident. This may be correct for some but not all, as individuals have their own unique set of circumstances that need to be carefully considered when determining residence. A simple “one size fits all” 90-day approach is ill advised.

Therefore, counting the number of days spent in the UK and understanding what ties you have is critical to ensure you remain non-UK tax resident. Determination and advising upon UK tax residence is highly complex. There are other factors contained in the UK Statutory Residence Test that may be applicable depending upon the circumstances involved, as well as potential interaction with the Guernsey/UK double taxation treaty. If you would like to discuss UK tax residence with us and determine the number of days you may be able to spend in the UK, please get in touch. We would be pleased to have an initial discussion without obligation.

Please call 01481 755862 or visit www.lts-tax.com

Falling foul of the rules and becoming UK tax resident can have material financial consequences, such as a significant exposure to UK income, capital gains and possibly inheritance tax, depending on individual circumstances. A day therefore matters, and a day in these circumstances usually means “presence at midnight”. But that is not all, as the number of days you are able to spend in the UK is often determined by how many “ties” an individual has with the UK. Ties with the UK are primarily based on family connections, accommodation, working in the UK, and spending 90 days in the UK in either of the last 2 years. Simply put, the more ties, the lower the number of days you are able to spend before triggering UK tax residence.

A better life for you

2022 has got busier as the weeks have rolled on. With travel restrictions now lifted in many places, we have seen plenty of individuals and businesses coming to the island from further afield to visit Guernsey for themselves. As is often the case, the period leading up to the end of the UK’s tax year in early April is very busy as people who have been planning their relocation for some time actually move into their new homes. It’s fantastic to see continued interest in our beautiful island and to hear the positive feedback about Guernsey life from recent arrivals. Guernsey has many compelling reasons which attract businesses and individuals to our shores. Amongst other things, we are a safe, stable,

independent jurisdiction with an enviable work/life balance. Speaking to recent arrivals a few days ago we were reminded that the safety and security angle is such a refreshing discovery for those who settle here. If you are considering moving to Guernsey or would like find out more information about island life in general, the team at Locate Guernsey are always happy to answer questions so please feel free to get in touch with us. www.locateguernsey.com

Leafy Cove, La Garenne, Grand Havre Bay, Vale GY3 5SG |

FOR SALE BY PUBLIC AUCTION

Leafy Cove Rare opportunity to fully renovate or redevelop a detached Victorian cottage and large sheds on a generous size plot in an iconic coastal setting. In the lee of Vale Church and facing a sandy beach is this traditional stone-built cottage in complete disarray but with outstanding potential to create a most desirable seafront home. Leafy Cove is one of only six cottages along a historic part of the north-west coast that resounds with a sense of bygone Guernsey. Standing 50 yards from high water, the overgrown plot is 200 feet in length and has a road frontage of 110 feet. Across the road is the coastal path between L’Ancresse and Grandes Rocques, with Les Amarreurs harbour and golf links a short stroll away. The cottage is of traditional stone-built construction under a slate roof and measures 1,000 square feet on the ground floor with further accommodation on the first floor. There are also front and rear flat-roof porches. The sheds are close-to and of mainly timber construction. The larger measures 480 square feet and the smaller shed is 190 square feet. The parallel-sided plot is 200 feet in length at its mid-point and the slightly-angled road frontage measures 110 feet. Measurements are approximate and taken from the States Cadastre records.
