HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR

UNIFORM

Hi-Visibility Vest

The expected life of hi-vis garments is 6 months. However, clothing can wear out quicker with regular use, exposure to sunlight, heat and strenuous work that leads to soiling and tears.

1. Machine/hand-wash your hi-vis apparel with like colours in cold water only. Use the ‘delicates’ cycle if using a washing machine and wash with a mild detergent. Do NOT use bleach or fabric softener.

2. Don’t wash jeans, work clothes or other rough fabrics (including those with hook-and-pile fasteners) when washing reflective or neon clothing. The microscopic glass beads on the retroreflective heat transfer film can be worn off by rough texture.

GENERAL UNIFORM CARE

1. Pants and shirts do not need to be ironed if they are washed and allowed to drip dry.

2. If pressing is required, turn the garment inside out before ironing.

3. Make sure the iron is set to the appropriate temperature before you begin to press the garment.

4. Officers needing blazers or additional safety vest should contact their supervisors.

Black Pants

1. Do not use strong detergent on black clothing. Mild liquid detergent or dishwashing liquid is ideal.

2. Do not use bleach on black fabric.

3. Do not wash your black garments in warm water. Cold water is best for black items.

4. Wash black items or dark clothing together.

5. Wash black clothing gently and inside out or on the wrong side.

6. Do not scrub vigorously.

7. Do not twist or squeeze the garment after washing. Instead, hang it up and allow it to drip dry.

8. Hang black clothes on the wrong side or inside out to line dry outside.

9. Zip up all pants before hanging in the sun to prevent discolouration in the crotch area.

10. Do not leave black clothing in the sun to dry for long periods. The colour will become burnt out.

White Shirt With Black Collars

1. Wash white shirts in cold water with blue soap or a mild powdered or liquid detergent. Do not use bleach on whites as it discolours the garment and weakens the fabric.

2. Separate your whites. Do not mix white clothing with coloured ones.

3. Remove all stains before washing. You can use dishwashing liquid or baking soda with an old toothbrush. If the stain refuses to come out, repeat the process using a little hot water to rub the stained area gently.

4. Do not twist or squeeze the garment after washing. Instead, hang it up and allow it to drip dry.

5. Hang shirts by the bottom. The collar should be hanging down.

6. Hang the garment in sunshine but do not leave it outside for too long. Take the item out of direct sunlight as it will burn out the black collar.
