Set Apart in the Power of the Spirit By The Rev. Gwen Buehrens
There’s a story about compassionate response that I’d like to share with you. Zelda Cornish once worked in a shoe store in Truro, Nova Scotia. Looking out the front window one wintry day, she noticed a barefoot boy standing on a warm grate outside a bakery, trying to keep warm. As she tried to figure out what to do, a woman stopped and said a few words to the boy— and then they went together into the shoe store. The woman bought some socks and shoes for the boy.
Scripture Lessons Today
The boy asked the woman, “Are you God’s wife?” The woman hesitated for a moment, not sure what to answer. Then she said, No, I’m just one of his children The boy said, “Well I knew you must be some kin to him.”

“If every Bible is lost, if every church crumbles to dust, if the last believer in the last prayer opens her eyes and lets it all finally go, Christ will appear on this earth as calmly and casually as he appeared to the disciples walking to Emmaus after his death, who did not recognize this man to whom they had pledged their very lives; this man whom they had seen beaten, crucified, abandoned by God; this man who, after walking the dusty road with them, after sharing an ordinary meal and discussing scriptures, had to vanish once more in order to make them see.” – Page 11 My Bright Abyss: Meditations of a Modern Believer, by Christian Wiman
