During the Easter season we are concluding each petition in the Prayers of the People with the Spanish phrase “Oremos al Señor,” which means “Let us pray to the Lord.” The congregation is invited to respond in English (“Lord, have mercy”) or in Spanish (“Señor, ten piedad”). This small and simple change brings with it a number of blessings, which I will describe below, and is also consistent with the inclusion of other non-English words during the Eucharist. Kyrie eleison is Greek. Amen is Aramaic. Halleluiah is Hebrew. Alleluia and sanctus are Latin. We also sing in several different languages—look at the Christmas section of the hymnal for examples. Notice how blessed we are when one of our choirs sings in a foreign language.
