This magnetic attraction derives from the love of Christ we share with each other. This love is the reason we grew by over 10% this last year.

I am struck by the many occasions when the love of Christ flows freely within the parish community. You have probably heard comments about how warm and welcoming All Saints’ is.

Three specific examples came to my attention recently in quick succession. One example came from a parishioner who e-mailed to report on two people whom she had telephoned. Another person lent her truck so someone could move a piece of furniture. Third, a couple donated money to my discretionary fund in response to the needs of a member. This love of Christ is also the animation of the Spirit and is marvelous to behold.

We are succeeding wonderfully in being an inviting and welcoming community and yet, at the same time, there are additional steps we can take. We have a number of older members who cannot drive and others who are recovering from surgery or illness. I minister to these folks as regularly as possible, but they would appreciate contact from other All Saints’ friends. Informal expressions of love occur all the time, as they should, but we could also benefit from organizing ourselves around the ministry of caring. After all, the very first church ministry undertaken by the apostles was caring for the widows in the Jerusalem congregation, as you will read in Acts 6:1-6.

A second next step in deepening our culture of transformation is to listen to our parents and grandparents about their hopes for their children.

By holding conversations with small groups of parents and grandparents we can decide how All Saints’ can best support them in bringing Christ into their homes and engendering faith in the hearts of their children.

I invite any and all interested persons to learn more about our emerging Caring Ministries by joining Robin Reyes and me on March 14 at 4:30 p.m. in the library. I also encourage you to attend one of the “Family and Faith Conversations: Walking the Way of Christ” held by the Discipleship Commission. Sierra Service Project Youth Mission Trip

states travel to one of the summer sites for an unforgettable week of serving, learning, worship and fellowship. Youth from many denominations are all a part of SSP’s mission work.

The middle school trip (for those entering 7th or 8th grade in the fall) will be to a Native American reservation in McDermitt, Nevada, July 29 to August 3, and the high school trip (for those entering 9th to those who just graduated) will be to South Los Angeles, July 29 to August 4. The format is informal: we sing some praise songs, pray, fix food, eat food, then play more songs. All are also encouraged to bring a song, or an instrument, or both, or just come and hang out and enjoy the fun. This is a gathering that is enjoyable for people of any age.

Anglican Chant in Lent During the season of Lent the choirs of All Saints’ will present the Psalm each week. Normally the congregation participates in the reading or singing of the Psalm, but during this penitential season, the choirs will present them alone. The Chancel Choir will present versions of the Psalm in Anglican Chant: a tradition formed during the 1930's by the late Ray Francis Brown, who studied the pointing of Psalms in England before serving as Director of Music at the General Theological Seminary for thirty years.

Celebrating our Centennial: Morning Prayer March 11 is a special day in the Centennial anniversary celebration of the parish, where

March 11, 2012 is the one year anniversary of the earthquake that devastated Japan. To honor the people of Japan, the Chancel Choir will present an anthem at the 10:30 a.m. Morning Prayer service titled “Cherry Blossoms Will Return.” This song was composed by area musician Joan Cobb with help from our very own Yoriko Hongo, who contributed the Japanese portion of the text. Todd Samra has arranged the work for choir. Please come and witness our subtle commemoration of this tragic event.

Easter 2012 On Easter Day (April 8, 2012), a new musical version of the Nicene Creed will be offered at the 10:30 a.m. service. This version, found in the 1982 Hymnal as S105, was composed by Calvin Hampton, a progressive composer who contributed much to the 1982 Hymnal. Because this setting is a challenge, small rehearsals will be offered during the announcements in the weeks preceding Easter.

Caring for One Another

With Robin Reyes serving as coordinator, we are beginning our Caring Ministries. Caring can include a number of ways of sharing Christ’s love and of remembering our members and friends. For instance, the Caring Ministries can include visiting people, sending notes or birthday cards, telephoning, or giving rides. Of course, we all extend love to friends, but by coordinating our efforts we can remember more people and thus build a stronger community for Christian transformation.

Perhaps you prefer the silky sound of a fine barbershop quartet, or the spirited, rustic energy of folk ensembles like the Chieftains. Whatever your taste, if you love the sound of the human voice raised in song, you’re sure to be transported by Trio Mediæval, the Norwegian ensemble coming to All Saints’ on Friday, March 2, at 8:00 p.m.

Trio Mediæval, comprising Anna Maria Friman, Linn Andrea Fuglseth, and Torunn Østrem Ossum, was founded in 1997. They made their US debut in 2003 and regularly tour to great acclaim (and sold-out houses) in Europe and North America. In a glowing review, the New York Times wrote that their three voices “blended with a supernatural clarity and beauty”; the Irish News said, "If you could bottle the joie de vivre that comes from the members of Trio Mediæval you could probably sell it not just as a pick-me-up, but as some form of basic life-force." I heard them in 2008, in a truly unforgettable concert that included sacred music from medieval England and France, newlycomposed works written especially for the three women, and rollicking Norwegian ballads about kings, lovers, and bandits. I can’t wait to hear them again! And just think: no need to travel to the Kennedy Center, Vienna Konzerthaus, or Wigmore Hall. They will be right here at All Saints’.

Book Club The If you’re a movie aficionado, you’ve probably seen the advertisements for The Hunger Games due for release in late March. The All Saints’ Book Club is reviewing the book The Hunger Games at our March 13, 2011 meeting—giving you plenty of time to decide whether you wish to see the movie. The book, written by Suzanne Collins, is a deadly “Survivor” reality show with Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar undertones, where teenagers fight for the right to eat.

As negative Utopias go, Suzanne Collins has created a dilly. The United States is gone. North America has become Panem, a TV-dominated dictatorship run from a city called the Capitol.

Panem is divided into 12 Districts (the former 13th had the bad judgment to revolt and no longer exists). The yearly highlight in this nightmare world is the Hunger Games, a bloodthirsty reality TV show in which 24 teenagers chosen by lottery, two from each District, fight each other in a desolate environment called the ''arena.'' What a powerful calling is prayer!

Not only are we given the gift of being able to intimately communicate with The Creator of the Universe, we are also told by Jesus again and again to pray. What an amazing thing we are able to do!

Join us during Lent for this year’s topic of Prayerful Living. Beginning on Wednesday, February 29th, we will convene in Seccombe Hall at 5:30 p.m. for our annual Lenten Soup Suppers.

After our meal and time for fellowship, we will explore prayer more deeply. Each week we will learn about new styles of prayer that open us to God’s presence and offer new ways to relate to Him. These prayer styles that engage our minds, as well as our imaginations, will actively help us to connect with God and break through our own inner noise which can often be our biggest barrier to feeling God in our lives.

The types of prayer include Centering Prayer, Prayers of Blessing, Meditative Prayer, Prayers of Examen, Written Prayers, Prayers of Distress, and also learning to use the Psalms as a means of spiritual growth. During each Soup Supper we will explore a type of prayer and actually practice it together as a Parish and on our own. After going home and trying out the prayer styles, we will follow-up with a lively discussion on each week’s prior practice.

The Soup Suppers are on February 29, March 7, 14, 21, 28, and April 4. We hope you will attend and enjoy wonderful home cooked soups, quality fellowship time, and an opportunity to deepen your prayer life!

Sunday Morning Lenten Study Series

During Lent our Bible study will use a series of presentations by Walter Brueggemann, arguably America’s leading Old Testament scholar and teacher. The series is called Embracing the Prophets: Confronting Today’s Pharaohs. The series will run from February 26 through April 1.

We will meet in Grant Hall and begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. Please join us for this Lenten series.

Lenten Quiet Day Enrich your Lent with a quiet time of meditations and silence. Join Fr. Rick in the chapel at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 3. Bring your Bible, prayer journal or paper, and food to share. We will conclude with a shared meal at noon.

Family and Faith Conversations: Walking the Way of Christ Please join us for one or more nights in our newest series of Family and Faith Conversations: Walking the Way of Christ.

This round table discussion series is devoted to learning more from families with young children about how they would like All Saints’ to help deepen their faith experience both at home and in our church. These conversations will help us enrich and transform our current offerings as well as envision how we can support families in faith and formation in the years ahead.

Some of the topics to be discussed include: children’s spiritual growth, time and space for spiritual life as a family, and types of programs and activities of interest. We will also be discussing Gospel-based values and modeling authentic faith, both as parents and a faith community.

Meanwhile our budget also recognized about $85,000 in regular plate offerings, and called for another $71,000 to support our mission and vision, raising the total needed for our operating budget to $376,200.

The generosity of our members has been outstanding. Gifts, donations and increased pledges to date place us just about $44,700 away from our goal.

ourOutreach Lenten Coin Boxes If you haven't done so yet, please pick up and fill a Lenten coin box during Lent. Lenten coin boxes are an especially good way to teach young children about tithes, offerings and the mission of the church.

Outreach:

We serve others with the compassion of Christ by offering sustenance to those in need.

This year the offering goes to St. Patricks' School, Locorbe, Haiti. Fr. Rick and others visited the school in 2009 and we have a working relationship with the priest in charge, Fr. Lazard.

Rebuilding the Cathedral in Haiti In January and February Rosemary Smith championed the campaign to help rebuild the Episcopal Cathedral in Haiti. The campaign was launched in partnership with the diocese.

Bishop Mary Grey-Reeves asked every church to participate and help rebuild our church in Haiti.

Episcopal dioceses and congregations nation wide are joining together by donating $10.00 per person : $10.00 equals one brick. Our website will provide you more information and a video appeal by Bishop Mary.

As of the date of releasing this issue, we have raised $805. We will keep the campaign open until the end of March with hopes that we will reach our goal and be able to send $1,000. For the price of two grande lattes at Starbucks, you can make a difference bringing comfort, spiritual vitality and the grace of God to others.

Small Bites for Big Hunger On Friday night, May 11, the Outreach Commission will present Small Bites for Big Hunger, a fund raiser to help alleviate hunger. We will have celebrity chefs, fine wines, a silent and a live auction. In this way, we can continue to give sustenance to those in need.

Liturgical Note

All Saints' has a new church website. It is an active site, providing breaking announcements, news, online contributions, access to Facebook and photo galleries and current stories of the ministry and life of All Saints'. Its a great way to stay in touch in between Patter issues and reduce our carbon footprint doing our part to reduce paper consumption and postage costs.

By: Fr. Rick One spiritual practice in the Christian tradition is making a reverential bow. Sometimes bows are part of someone’s personal piety, and other times they become part of our liturgical ceremony. You might notice that I and others bow or reverence when entering the chancel. During Lent we will bow to each other at the beginning of the service.

The purpose of such a simply gesture is similar to the verbal exchange when the celebrant says, “The Lord be with you,” and the people respond, “And also with you.” The bow acknowledges God’s image in the other and Christ’s presence between us. I pray that you find this Lenten practice meaningful.

Women and men from the Episcopal Church and 20 Anglican Communion Provinces will gather for the 56th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) in New York City February 27 to March 9.

The 2012 theme of UNCSW is the empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, development and current challenges.

In addition to the provincial delegates, nearly 90 delegates will attend. While many of the 90 are from the United States, other countries represented will be Ghana, Malawi, Rwanda, Sudan, and Zambia.

The retreat will be held at the magical site of Mission San Antonio de Padua. Father Vincent Raj will be facilitating our spiritual learning.
