Campaign for Generations Update Thanks to an incredible group of donors and partners, the Campaign for Generations is making a strong push toward a successful finish. As of January, GTRLC has raised roughly $70 million of its $71.4 million goal, a remarkable achievement made possible by willing landowners and thousands of dedicated supporters who believe in our mission.

Upper Manistee Headwaters: The Milock Family Preserve Fundraising is complete, and this property will open to the public this summer. For a full story on this fantastic property, see page 10.

More than 5,200 acres have been protected through more than 50 projects. And it’s not just about acres, as GTRLC has also opened incredibly popular universal access trails at Arcadia Dunes, Arcadia Marsh and the St. Clair Lake – Six Mile Lake Nature Preserve. Another at Timbers Recreation Area will open in early summer (see story on page 18).

Mitchell Creek Meadows Preserve

Lower Woodcock Lake Preserve

After a major lead gift from longtime supporters Don and Jerry Oleson, GTRLC continues to raise money for this fabulous property in the heart of the region’s population center. The former Mitchell Creek Golf Course is bursting with potential as a preserve, and GTRLC staff and volunteers are in the process of completing biological inventories and creating a management plan for this property.

Approved last year, this phenomenal 230-acre property has a half mile of frontage on the Platte River and contains the entirety of the 22-acre lake it’s named for. After two major lead gifts and support from others, fundraising is nearly complete.

GTRLC is also in the process of acquiring a 38-acre addition to this preserve that will protect additional wetland habitat and provide more opportunities for future trail connections.

Preliminary planning is already underway with partners such as East Bay Township, TART and Norte.

GTRLC is completing a variety of biological inventories and is in the earliest stages of developing a management plan for this important preserve.

The “Ribbon of Protection” - Torch River Nature Preserve/Schuler Farm Conservation Easement Fundraising is nearly complete for these two critical properties that together protect more than 500 contiguous acres of exceptional natural, scenic and agricultural lands in the Chain of Lakes, one of the most storied and important watersheds in our region.

The 211-acre Schuler Farm conservation easement has nearly 1,000 feet of undeveloped frontage on Skegemog Lake, which augments the nearly 2,000 feet of undeveloped frontage contained in the contiguous North Skegemog Nature Preserve. The proposed 295-acre Torch River Nature Preserve has 1,500 feet of undeveloped wetland frontage along the Torch River.

This pristine frontage provides a welcome contrast to the heavily developed stretch of river that lies just to the north.

When combined with the existing North Skegemog Nature Preserve, protection stretches more than a mile from the shoreline of the Torch River on the east side of the Weiss property to the shoreline of the North Skegemog Nature Preserve.

Upper Manistee Headwaters Preserve Set to Open!

1,288 ACRE PRESERVE IN KALKASKA COUNTY WILL BE GTRLC’S SECOND LARGEST As always, there are many exciting goings-on at one of the largest and most noteworthy projects in the Campaign for Generations – and the biggest news of all is that GTRLC is preparing to open this stunning gem to the public this summer!

Upper Manistee Headwaters: The Milock Family Preserve is 1,288 acres of rich, diverse habitats bursting with ecological significance and recreational potential. The former Boy Scout camp 10

known as Camp Tapico was initially secured with a loan from local philanthropists Richard and Diana Milock, who later pledged $1 million to the Campaign for Generations.

Biological surveys continue On the heels of a detailed herpetological (reptile and amphibian) survey conducted by highly regarded specialist David Mifsud in the spring of 2019 (see story in our summer 2019 Landscript, available on the Publications and Stories page of www.gtrlc.org), other surveys were conducted and are planned at this preserve.

In August, retired Michigan Department of Environmental Quality aquatic biologist Joe Rathbun, a noted freshwater mussel specialist, guided volunteers on a mussel survey of the lake. He was joined by Brian Keas, director of educational development at the nearby Au Sable Institute, who conducted a snail survey.

Rathbun, who has conducted hundreds of surveys across the state, was very impressed with the property, particularly with 130-acre Grass Lake.

“Water quality looks to be really good, water

chemistry is fine, you’ve got really nice riparian and wetland vegetation around the perimeter,” Rathbun said. You’ve got loons nesting out there, and that’s a really good indicator. Everything I’ve seen about this lake indicates it’s about as pristine a lake as you’re going to find in (the Lower Peninsula).”

And he’s impressed about what’s not in Grass Lake as much as what’s in it. The lake is devoid of Eurasian watermilfoil, zebra mussels and other notable aquatic invasive species, largely because the Scouts didn’t regularly have outside boats entering the lake.

“Zebra mussels have colonized the Great Lakes and many, many lakes throughout Michigan,” he said. It’s really nice to study a population of freshwater native mussels that hasn’t been impacted by zebra mussels.”

Keas was equally impressed.

“The quality of this place is fabulous,” Keas said.

“The fact that it’s been so well preserved and isolated makes it a really unique property.”

Volunteers had plenty of fun, too. Nearby resident Mark Maddox “jumped at the chance” to get involved with the surveys.

“It struck me as funny as I was out there poking around with a net that here I am, 70 years old and retired, doing the same thing as I was when I was a kid at 10 or 12 years old, and having a great time doing it,” he said.

GTRLC Preserve Steward Angie Lucas is happy to continue the theme of citizen science at Upper Manistee and other preserves and natural areas in GTRLC’ service area.

“One of the most meaningful ways to engage people with our protected lands is to get their hands dirty learning about the plants and animals that call them home,” she said. “These types of activities really allow people to appreciate why land protection is important.”

Trail building commences Last fall, GTRLC secured assistance from AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) to help build trail at Upper Manistee.

In total, nearly seven miles of trail is ready for action.

One shorter wetland trail (roughly one mile) and one longer path (about six miles) will give visitors options when they arrive at the preserve.

“We took some of the best existing segments of old Scout trail and connected them, and we also built some new sections,” said GTRLC Stewardship Director David Foote. “It’s a really nice end result that gives people a lot to see.”

The longer trail is wide enough for biking, Foote said, but likely won’t be attractive to many mountain bikers because it is flat and relatively short. But visitors are welcome to use bikes on this path nonetheless, allowing them to see the preserve in a shorter amount of time if desired.

“ The quality of this place is fabulous,” Keas said. “The fact that it’s been so well preserved and isolated makes it a really unique property.”

Several dozen structures were removed or demolished as the property transitioned from a Boy Scout camp to a nature preserve, with the final buildings down

by December.

Much of the property is now returned to its natural state, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in nature without too many man-made distractions.

“We tried to recycle or repurpose as much as we could,” Foote said of the demolition process. “A lot of the material will be used elsewhere, which is great.”

A select few – including two historic and picturesque Civilian Conservation Corps-era cabins that predated the Scout era – were saved for historic or stewardship purposes. Also saved was a beautiful amphitheater that sits along Grass Lake. A picnic pavilion and

Marla sits in quiet reflection at Upper Manistee Headwaters: The Milock Family Preserve.

Marla Morrissey’s desire to protect wildlife and the environment was always there, a small fire smoldering under the busy matters of life that often get in the way of idealistic endeavors.

In sixth grade it was a postcard campaign to urge officials in her native California to protect the Tule elk, a rare subspecies native to that state.

Later on it was many hours in support of a ban on mountain lion trophy hunting there, an effort she felt compelled to get involved with after reading a magazine article.

“It’s that moment where you go from simply being aware to taking action,” she said. “I had no clue what to do, I was just a person sitting in a chair with a magazine – but I knew for sure I had to get involved.”

But despite these early efforts, the tiny flame didn’t become a bonfire until she became a mother.

Moving from her hometown of Los Angeles to the small California coastal town of Los Osos, her young son toddled around the beautiful coastal dunes, beaches and forests, allowing her to be reminded of the wonders of nature as seen through a child’s eyes.

She recalls an incident where her son wanted to look in a tiny creek for fish. So Morrissey grabbed a net from the family aquarium and they headed to the creek. Despite the assumption that the creek was relatively barren, her son netted a few small, shimmering steelhead from its waters.

“You know how you’re out there sometimes in nature, and you have an experience that is so vivid it just sears itself into your brain?” she said. “This was one of those. To this day I can bring the full picture of those fish to mind.”

Seeing her young child absorbed with nature’s wonders really inspired Morrissey to take environmental advocacy to another level.

“After my son was born, it was like the environment was another child of the family,” she said. “And we need to take care of our children.”

From restoration projects designed to save steelhead and other coastal fish to efforts to cultivate native plants and campaigns to purchase residential properties within fragile coastal dune habitat, Morrissey found herself more and more involved. These efforts had her in close contact and cooperation with state and federal agencies, local

land conservancies and conservation groups.

Morrissey became a major donor to GTRLC’s ongoing Campaign for Generations not long after purchasing the building that houses the CVS Pharmacy on Front and Division in Traverse City. Despite never having been to Michigan, her advisors had identified the property as ideal for investment. But it didn’t feel right to Morrissey to have a presence in the community without contributing in some way.

“As I started to learn about Traverse City, I wasn’t really happy with being an absentee landlord,” she said. “I could have chosen other things to get involved with to speak to our appreciation of being involved in this new community, but of course I sought out the (local) land conservancy.”

After establishing a relationship with Conservancy staff, but before even setting foot in Traverse City for the first time, Morrisey was one of two supporters who provided substantial donations to help GTRLC secure an option for the Lower Woodcock Lake Preserve.

Morrissey has since given additional gifts to the Conservancy, both before and after finally visiting for the first time last October. On that visit she walked the paths at the proposed Upper Manistee Headwaters Preserve and Lower Woodcock Lake Preserve, among other places, trips that only reinforced her already strong belief in investing in land protection.

“We’re not at the end of protecting habitat that’s pristine, but there’s less and less of it, and it’s of course more and more expensive,” she said. “I thought to myself, now’s the time. If you have the money to donate to habitat protection, do it now.”

But science can only take an organization so far.

Morrissey was also impressed with the staff’s passion, especially after her visit to Traverse City.

“The other hand holding all the science is the Conservancy’s apparent and very obvious deep love for these lands,” she said. “It really, really stood out. You want to pass this on to the younger generations who want to be living there, and that’s just wonderful.”

Morrissey plans to visit the area again soon.

And even if she never did again, she’ll always have a piece of it with her.

“As I approach my transition from this world, I’ll still be thinking of walking the trails at the Upper Manistee Headwaters Preserve. It’s so beautiful.

How the wind was in the leaves, the birds calling, it really struck me,” she said. “There’s a lot of beautiful places in the world, and you sure have one of them. It’s like seeing the steelhead in the creek, that’s how seeing Upper Manistee and Lower Woodcock were for me, the memories are vivid in my brain. I get to be there even when I’m not there.”

One doesn’t make such donations without significant trust in the organization on the receiving end. After spending time getting to know GTRLC, Morrissey was impressed with the scientific approach to prioritizing what lands to protect.

“If you want to do something good, you want to do the best good you can, and I have a lot of confidence GTRLC.ORG

Health Benefits from Being in Nature Our natural resources give us numerous and profound benefits. From clean water and beautiful views to healthy ecosystems and the pure, simple joy of a walk in the woods, nature is something to be celebrated and invested in. More and more experts are quantifying the value of nature’s benefits, allowing communities to make informed land management decisions and effectively advocate for land protection. In our region and throughout the country, land protection efforts have been definitively shown to boost the economy by protecting local food industries, attracting businesses and visitors and increasing property values.

One substantial and increasingly discussed benefit to investing in nature is the positive impact it has on our physical and mental health. Though many of us know it instinctively, an increasing body of professional studies has begun to demonstrate a clear and strong link between outdoor activities

and our health and wellness. Being outside, even for brief periods, can provide a host of benefits that scientists are only beginning to fully quantify and understand.

We heard from 558 people who visited Arcadia Marsh and Timbers Recreation Area in the summer of 2019 about what it meant to them to be out on the land, part of our ongoing efforts to learn how our work affects those who live and visit our region.

In 2020, we will continue to survey visitors at these places and at other protected land throughout our service area.

Timbers UA Trail to Open Soon!

TRAIL IS ONE OF SEVERAL COMPLETED ON GTRLC-PROTECTED PROPERTIES DURING CAMPAIGN FOR GENERATIONS The latest in a series of trails designed to let people of all abilities access nature’s wonders will open soon at one of Grand Traverse County’s most beloved recreation areas.

Crews are putting the finishing touches on a universal access (UA) trail at the Timbers Recreation Area in Long Lake Township. The trail, which consists of crushed aggregate and boardwalk components, could be open as soon as April.

“We are extremely excited for the opening of this UA trail,” Long Lake Township Supervisor Karen Rosa said. “Our hope is this trail will enhance access to the wide range of natural resources to community members with limited mobility, families with children in strollers, those in wheelchairs, and those with similar restrictions that cannot now easily access these resources.”

GTRLC helped Long Lake Township secure a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF) grant to protect the 250-acre Timbers property in 2012. The Conservancy also negotiated with the landowners (then the Girl Scouts) and helped raise money to match the grant. In 2017, the Conservancy helped the township secure a second grant for construction of the new trail, again fundraising for the local match.

The trail consists of more than a half a mile of crushed aggregate that leads from the parking lot 18

down to Long Lake. From there, a roughly 100-foot boardwalk takes visitors to a new fishing pier on Fern Lake. It also includes a spur to a picnic area behind the gorgeous and historic barns. UA upgrades were also made to the parking lot, which has been reconfigured.

Holiday Woods Natural Area Grant Approved MICHIGAN NATURAL RESOURCES TRUST FUND MAKES NEW NATURAL AREA POSSIBLE A new public natural area near the region’s population center will be possible thanks to another successful Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant.

In December, the Trust Fund board approved a $584,000 grant for the creation of the Holiday Woods Natural Area. This 145-acre preserve will incorporate the existing 80-acre Holiday Woodlands Preserve off Five Mile Road and add an additional 65 acres of natural land between that preserve and the Mt. Holiday Ski Area. The MNRTF grant will allow East Bay Township to purchase 20

both parcels and form the new natural area.

“I am thankful that the township is involved in areas of both conservation and development, as the balance of these seemingly divergent paths complement one another perfectly in a community’s development,” said Beth Friend, East Bay Township Supervisor. “The Holiday Woods Natural Area is a chance to conserve a substantial amount of ecologically and recreationally important property in an area projected to receive some of the highest long-term growth pressures of anywhere across the state of Michigan.”

Though the 80-acre Holiday Woodlands Preserve was temporarily secured by a citizens group in 2017, the group was struggling to make payments on the mortgage and risked losing the property, said group chairman Jim Lamond. After discussions with East Bay Township and the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, which was already in talks with owners of the adjacent 65-acre parcel, the decision was made to package both properties together and pursue a MNRTF grant.

“This is exciting, and it’s a huge relief,” Lamond said. “The property is safe, and that was the ultimate goal. We wanted to save this property that people really value, not only for now but into the future. We couldn’t have done this without the Conservancy.”

The Conservancy will raise less than $100,000 as a match to the grant. The initial 80-acre property remains open to the public and can be accessed from a driveway on the east side of Five Mile Road about a third of a mile south of Unity Church.

Mt. Holiday has agreed to handle maintenance duties of the new natural area.

“Since the natural area is adjacent to our property, we felt there was a need for us to do our part,” said Mt. Holiday board member and immediate past president John Lynch. “When you use and enjoy a piece of land, I think there is an inherent desire to be responsible for its (care).”

GTRLC Executive Director Glen Chown said the Conservancy is glad to have play a role.

“This is an example of citizens identifying a treasured property and beginning the necessary steps to protect it for future generations,” Chown said. “Thanks to these dedicated individuals and the leadership of East Bay Township, the Conservancy was able to step in and help make this dream a reality.”

About the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund uses money earned from the sale or lease of state-owned mineral rights to make grants to municipalities so that they can acquire land for public parks and natural areas, and also to provide recreational amenities on those lands.

Since 1976, this fund has granted roughly $1.2 billion to such projects across the state. The Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy has helped more than a dozen local municipalities secure more than $67 million in trust fund grant money since its inception in 1991.

Lynch said everyone associated with Mt. Holiday is thrilled at the prospect of a new natural area, and he’s thankful that GTRLC’s leadership helped make it happen.

“Our board cannot thank the GTRLC enough for spearheading this project. Making this land a natural area had been a pipe dream for Mt. Holiday, Mud Sweat, & Beers and East Bay Township for several years, and there were times where we did not think this project would work,” Lynch said.

“When GTRLC became involved, they were able to provide the guidance, leadership and resolve to make this area a reality. If it wasn’t for GTRLC, this area would not exist.”

Two Missions, One Goal GTRLC AND CRA WORK TO BOTH PROTECT AND ENHANCE LAND IN OUR REGION Glen Chown and Amy Beyer.

GTRLC has a long history of working closely with other conservation organizations in the region on a variety of projects designed to boost the health and vitality of our region’s land and natural resources.

While all of these relationships are important, few have been as long-lasting and impactful as the Conservancy’s close partnership with the Conservation Resource Alliance (CRA), a Traverse City-based nonprofit that serves 13 counties in northwest lower Michigan.

CRA’s primary mission is enhancing and protecting natural habitat by promoting and assisting with responsible stewardship of the land. This means things like erosion control, stream restoration, native tree planting and more, all under the guidance of trained biologists, engineers and field technicians.

GTRLC have referred dozens of private landowners to each other for land protection or stewardship or restoration work (depending on what steps the landowner first took), a powerful combination that has maximized conservation throughout the region.

“Land protection and land stewardship, these are basically the most complimentary missions you can have,” GTRLC Executive Director Glen Chown said.

“So when we combine our forces, we have a much better package for landowners and for conservation in our region as a whole.”

put rip-rap on their waterfront because they’ve got an erosion problem in many cases is also interested in protecting their land,” Chown continued. “And from the other direction, those who are interested in protecting their land with GTRLC are almost certainly going to be interested in stewardship and restoration of that land – they want to take the best possible care of it.”

For CRA, working to improve all habitat is important. But doing that work on permanently protected land is so much sweeter, CRA Executive Director Amy Beyer said.

“We appreciate that we have strong permanent land protection here in northern Michigan, because otherwise what we do today with all of our efforts at CRA could easily be undone tomorrow,” Beyer said. “It’s just so great to complete projects on protected land.”

Referrals between the two organizations only scratch the surface of their deep and impactful cooperation. Take for example the Flowing Well project, in which GTRLC protected a 1,720 acre former fish farm in Kalkaska County’s Excelsior Township. The property has 7,400 feet of frontage on the North Branch of the Upper Manistee River and more than 10,000 feet on associated creeks.

Many of these natural systems were severely impacted by a trout farm that operated on the property for decades. Concrete raceways, rearing ponds, dredged channels and nearly a dozen dams along creeks and the Upper Manistee were built over the years to support farm operations, drastically altering the flow, direction, natural features and health of these waterways.

Over a five year period beginning in 2009, CRA removed 11 dams of various sizes. Removal of these dams helped restore natural water flow, reduced sediment load, allowed for fish passage and reversed the warming effect these dams had on water temperatures. Then, CRA actively worked to rehabilitate these waterways by providing critical habitat improvements in the water and along the shore.

Chown said. “The land and water there is not only permanently protected, but now completely restored and healthy – and neither organization could have accomplished all of that by itself.”

Then there’s the numerous examples of joint fundraising, the “crown jewel” of these examples coming when GTRLC and CRA – along with the Leelanau Conservancy and Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians – were the recipients of $7.9 million grant through the 2014 Farm Bill’s Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP). Among other things, the money will be used for farmland protection and stream restoration in our region.

“Funders don’t want to see competition, they want to see cooperation and maximum impact,” Chown said. “A big part of the reason we secured that money is because it was very clear our organizations would work effectively together to GTRLC.ORG

get this important work done.”

GTRLC also is working with CRA on its Wild Roots program, buying hundreds of trees and planting them at various preserves and natural areas. An anonymous GTRLC donor with a strong interest in trees has helped fund these efforts.

“Our giant goal for wild roots is to get massive amounts of native trees and shrubs out on to the landscape, with no limits, really – public land, private land, protected land – just get them planted,” Beyer said.

Beyer and Chown said they sometimes hear comments that suggest the northern Michigan conservation scene, of which CRA and GTRLC are prominent members, must have redundancy.

But Beyer said the network of conservation nonprofits in the region is in fact “a carefully woven blanket of protection that has everything right where it belongs.”

“It’s a common suggestion that there must be overlap or there must be waste – people will say ‘How come it takes so many of you?’ But think of it this way – if you have a broken foot you don’t go the ear nose and throat doctor or the heart surgeon,” Beyer said. “None of us expect one doctor’s office to do it all because that would be more convenient.

Each of us are specialists with very specific expertise, and we work together for the best possible outcomes.”

Working Together GTRLC, MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES PARTNER TO PROTECT VALUABLE LAND This wonderful property will transfer from the state to GTRLC and be protected with a conservation easement.

If you look at maps of Michigan, especially on a regional or county level, you might notice that most large green swaths of state forest are irregularly shaped, disjointed or peppered with a considerable number of holes.

That’s because not everything within the designated boundaries of most state forests is actually owned by the state. The parts that are have often been accumulated over many years, and many private landowners still hold considerable acreage within forest boundaries.

said Kerry Wieber, the Forest Land Administrator for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

“Conservation organizations such as GTRLC are typically much more nimble and able to move much more quickly to secure property that is of high conservation value,” Wieber said. “Considering the DNR’s funding options consist primarily of grants with fairly long review/award cycles, when it comes to protecting lands with high resource and conservation values that are likely to be sold very quickly, we rely heavily on partners like GTRLC to assist the DNR.”

GTRLC has on many occasions helped the state acquire additional land for state forests. Sometimes these are “inholdings” – private parcels nearly or completely surrounded by state land – and sometimes they are important expansions. In any event, if GTRLC was involved, they were parcels of significant conservation value.

“There are countless examples where GTRLC has acquired and held property until the DNR has funding available to purchase it,” Wieber continued. “These types of partnerships go a long way in helping both the DNR and GTRLC accomplish our missions.”

The state considers this partnership “invaluable,”

land that is later acquired by the state, as was the case with the 160-acre Sand Lakes piece in 2017.

That is a fine example of a piece that the state would not have been able to move fast enough to protect – and a piece that would have had dire impacts for recreation had it been developed, as it contained a section of trail used for years by cyclists.

“There is a strong likelihood that the DNR would not have been successful in securing some properties that were likely to sell quickly if GTRLC had not stepped in as a partner and pre-acquired the property for the DNR,” Wieber said.

Right now, GTRLC and the state are in the process of a swap – three parcels for two parcels. Such swaps are possible when the value of the exchanged properties is even. This swap involves the state receiving 13 acres in Benzie County with 1,400 feet of frontage on the Betsie River, a 31 acre Antrim County property with 1,700 feet of frontage on the Jordan River and a 28-acre parcel in Cheboygan County (this piece, outside of GTRLC’s service area, was left as a bequest by a donor). All three parcels will be added to state forest holdings.

In exchange, GTRLC is receiving a five-acre Benzie County parcel with 720 feet of frontage on Platte Lake that is surrounded by GTRLC’s existing Medenbrook Nature Preserve and a nearly 80-acre parcel in Antrim County with about a mile of frontage on the Cedar River. The Benzie piece will be added to the Medenbrook preserve and the Antrim parcel will be restricted with a conservation

easement and re-sold.

The end result is a big win for conservation, as the state will add more than 70 acres of high quality land to its state forests, and that which it is trading to GTRLC will remain protected via the conservancy’s ownership and use of a conservation easement.

GTRLC Land Protection Director Chris Sullivan said working with the state to expand state forest land is a great way to accomplish regional conservation and recreational goals, especially when it comes to the protection and addition of various inholdings.

“Development of these in-holdings can have consequences both for wildlife and habitat surrounding the developed area, and it can impact recreational uses,” Sullivan said. “Even on public land, for instance, firearm hunters can’t hunt within 450 feet of an occupied building without the permission of the landowner.”

In many cases it’s also a practical matter that the state own the land, Sullivan said.

“Because the state already manages the land around these inholdings, it makes far more sense for these priority parcels to go to the state to manage with the rest of their holdings, than to have GTRLC own and manage a single property surrounded – or nearly so – by state land.”

Taking Ownership VOLUNTEER RICK BOBIAN AMONG THOSE WHO KEEP GTRLC TRAILS IN TIP-TOP SHAPE Rick Bobian didn’t know a single thing about building a mountain bike trail when he first showed up to Arcadia Dunes more than 10 years ago for a trail-building event at his sister’s suggestion. He also didn’t know much – if anything – about the Conservancy.

That’s amusing to think about now, considering the fact that he’s among the most knowledgeable and reliable volunteers on the Conservancy’s roster.

As it is with many who help out the Conservancy, Bobian’s role started out small, then grew along with his passion for the organization and its work.

The retired dentist, who grew up in Manistee and now lives in Bear Lake, got into the trailbuilding groove working with Preserve Steward Steve Lagerquist, who heads up much of GTRLC’s

efforts to build high quality and sustainable trail throughout its five-county service area. There was much to learn, everything from how to make a proper bench cut to dealing with water drainage, sight lines and more.

“I really enjoyed working with him so much,” Bobian said. “He made it so interesting, and he really loves what he does. And we just learned so much from him.”

Bobian’s efforts slowly transformed from merely building trail to making sure the trails he helped build – and even those he hadn’t – were in the best shape they could be.

Q As you look back over the past year, what excites you the most about the state of GTRLC’s volunteer program?

A Over the past year, I’ve tried to listen carefully to our volunteers and really focus on how I can help them be successful in their service to our shared mission. I’m so excited to take everything I’ve heard and put it into motion this year! We will be offering dedicated training for all of our volunteer opportunities, additional training to boost our volunteer’s capacity and comfort level (like chainsaw training) and more opportunities for feedback and communication. 2019 was a record setting year in terms of volunteer engagement for the Conservancy, and I firmly believe 2020 will be even better.

Q Going forward, what are GTRLC’s areas of biggest need from a volunteer perspective?

A I’m happy (and a little daunted) that the Conservancy’s volunteer program is quickly outgrowing my ability to directly oversee everything! Given the unparalleled success we’ve experienced in protecting land through the Campaign for Generations, we need more volunteer leaders stepping up within all of our volunteer programs to care for these incredible new preserves. Places like Upper Manistee Headwaters: The Milock Family Preserve and the proposed Lower Woodcock Lake Preserve, the proposed Torch River Nature Preserve and more will all need dedicated volunteers to ensure the trails are kept clear and the ecosystems are kept pristine, among other tasks. GTRLC also needs help leading hikes and hosting events, and we can always use help with office administration as well!

Q As you speak with volunteers, what do you hear from them about why they support our work?

A Across the board, our volunteers say the work itself is its own reward. No matter their specific task, Conservancy volunteers work to improve the environment and the incredible places here in Northwest Lower Michigan. Our staff and volunteers are all wonderful people which makes the work more enjoyable too.

Q W hat impresses you the most about GTRLC’s volunteers?

A Their dedication to our mission! As a staff member, it can be easy to feel ownership over the Conservancy’s mission to protect land and advance stewardship in our corner of Michigan,

but I am constantly reminded that some of the most stalwart, passionate conservationists working toward our common goals are volunteers! Our vision for the future means healthy water resources for the region; it means protecting important farmland and farming practices; it means safeguarding our quality of life and community character here in Northern Michigan; it means businesses and industry are able to thrive in conjunction with, and because of our natural resources; and it means protecting incredible habitats and ecosystems for wildlife, wildflowers and people. Up She Rises Up, up, up and up some more.

Despite very low Great Lakes levels only seven short years ago, water has surged to the other end of the spectrum now, shattering decades-old high water records. And while it’s impossible to predict with certainty, many who study these fluctuations believe levels will push even higher this year.

These levels have impacted countless properties situated along the shore. GTRLC owns or has helped protect a significant amount of coastal properties stretching from Manistee to Antrim counties. Issues on coastal properties range from the relatively harmless loss of beach enjoyed by residents and visitors to more serious erosion issues that have required property owners, including GTRLC, to take action.

For example, GTRLC installed stairs leading to the beach at Green Point Dunes when lake levels were low. Now that Lake Michigan is at a near record high, our stewardship team has disassembled the lower portion of the stairs.

“Had we not done that, the staircase might have become unstable,” said GTRLC Stewardship Specialist Steve Lagerquist. “This allowed us to protect most of that stairway, and hopefully we can reinstall the lower section at some point in the future.”

High water issues aren’t limited to properties directly on the coast. In low, wet place places in relative proximity to Lake Michigan (like Pyatt Lake on Old Mission Peninsula and the Reffitt Nature Preserve in East Bay Township) the water

that normally flows from those places into the Lake Michigan gets backed up due to high water levels, changing the experience at those preserves.

Executive Director Glen Chown said.

A review of Great Lakes water level history shows significant fluctuations over the years, said GTRLC Stewardship Director David Foote. But how much more water will rise, and how long it will stay there, is still anyone’s guess.

“Shoreline and riparian habitats are extremely dynamic and sensitive systems that need protection,” Chown said. “Our science-driven Priority Land Atlas explicitly targets these types of habitats to ensure that these natural systems are in place to not only provide critical habitat, but to help buffer these cyclical changes.”

“History has told us this that we should be looking forward to lake levels dropping sometime in the next several years,” Foote said. “But you never really know for sure if history is going to repeat itself again or if we’re dealing with a new normal.”

Maple Sugaring It’s almost time for GTRLC’s annual Maple Sugaring Day at the Maple Bay Farm!

This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, March 28th from 1 - 3 PM. This family-friendly gathering allows participants to learn about every step of the maple sugaring process, from tapping the trees to boiling the sap down to maple syrup and tasting the finished product. All of this takes place at the beautiful Maple Bay farm, which has its own delightful red sugar shack used just for his occasion.

Event participants will be able choose their own adventure in learning the maple sugaring process.

We will have staff and volunteers stationed in the sugar bush, cellar and sugar shack to demonstrate the sugaring process.

Dress for the weather! Full winter attire is recommended as Maple Bay is regularly cold and windy.

Sturdy, close toed shoes that can handle some mud are also suggested.
