Letter from the Chair Greetings from the HilltopDespite numerous challenges faced by our community in 2021, there are many accomplishments to celebrate. In this document, we highlight achievements made by students, alums, and faculty as well as noteworthy initiatives that advance our mission.

• In the summer, we celebrated 36 students who fulfilled their graduation requirements and joined our alumni community.

• After obtaining input from employers and key stakeholders, we made curricular changes to the Master of Science in Health Systems Administration (MHSA) and welcomed a cohort of 18 working professionals.

• We continue to be ever-inspired by alumni accomplishments.

We feature Ken West, a newly named hospital president and CEO, and Lara Wilson, director of Rural Health Care Transformation at UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown, as well as Vanessa Villaverde, who now serves on the School of Nursing & Health Studies Advisory Board.

• In a commitment to deepen work at the intersection of race, policy and health, we proudly welcomed nationally renowned health equity and racial justice scholar, Dr. Derek M. Griffith to the department. We were also thrilled to confirm that Father Michael Rozier would serve as the first Jesuit Chair in the School of Nursing & Health Studies – effective Spring 2022.

• Our accomplishments would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our staff.

We were proud to recruit Danielle Simcic, Associate Director of the graduate program and Angel Phan, Program Coordinator.

• We also express gratitude and congratulate Drs. Patricia Cloonan and Laura Anderko on their retirement.

• And throughout the year, our esteemed and prolific faculty made noteworthy contributions to research, scholarship, and practice. Their work is cited.

We are grateful for alums, preceptors, adjuncts, and key partners who helped make these accomplishments possible. And we look forward to working with you as we launch the School of Health in 2022.

MHSA Class of 2023 Based on feedback from students, alums, and employers, the nationally accredited Master of Science in Health Systems Administration is now a two-year, part-time hybrid program that targets early career working professionals. In 2021, 18 professionals with diverse backgrounds in the health, health care, and policy sectors joined our community of learning.

Student Highlights Madison Dyer, NHS’22 serves as president of Students Advancing Food Equity (SAFE). The club focuses on raising awareness about food insecurity, spreading education on how to eat affordably and healthy and rescuing food from being wasted and bringing it to the Hoya Hub, the on-campus food pantry.

Melody Emenyonu, NHS’24 focuses on intersection of health and advocacy. She is a contributor to the African Society of Georgetown, Black Student Alliance, Georgetown Scholars Program, Georgetown University Minority Association of PreHealth Students and Students Helping Aspiring Physicians Excel.

Nicole Feenstra, NHS’22 hopes to advance health equity by pursuing work at the intersection of health administration and research. She is especially interested in addressing stigma and misinformation that historically compromised women’s access to timely, high-quality care.

Student Highlights Matthew Fisher, NHS 22’ plans service-focused medical center. He has been accepted to medical school and is interested in pursuing family medicine with an obstetrics fellowship. Fisher says his HCMP courses have helped set himself apart as not just a future physician, but a physician-leader.

Joanna LaCoppola, NHS 22’ will attend Georgetown Law and hopes to focus on health. She believes her background in health care management and policy coupled with a law degree will uniquely position her to serve the most vulnerable.

Reona Pereira, NHS’23 focuses on health policy to create change. She is a member of the Lecture Fund and has leadership roles with GU Jawani and Georgetown Individuals Vocal and Energetic for Services (GIVES).

Sannidhi Shaskikiran, NHS’22 leads as president of the Academy Health Chapter and Hindu Students Association. She values holding “programing that engages and promotes community-building among students, connects with other faith groups on campus and gives to Dharmic and South Asian communities through various philanthropic endeavors.”

Alumni News Dorothy Hector, NHS ‘12 practices finance law in NYC. Hector says Georgetown taught her a framework for problem-solving and gave her the confidence in her work to take the path that works best for her even when she saw others taking a different approach.

Isayah Henry, NHS ‘21 authored “Innovator’s Clinic: How Small Innovators Are Positioned Best to Address Healthcare’s Longest-Standing Challenges” that c released in August 2021. The book is about how innovators are redesigning the future of healthcare, through the use of technology and unique business models.

Robert Longyear, NHS ‘19 authored “Virtual Care Blueprint: How Digital Health Technologies Can Improve Health Outcomes, Patient Experience and Cost-Effectiveness”. Released in September 2021, he explores the science, frontline clinical perspectives and potential impact of RPM-based virtual care programs.

Alumni News Samantha Schlageter, NHS ‘21 co-authored a new white paper on excess mortality during COVID-19 with Dr. Michael Stoto. The paper illustrates how excess mortality can provide more complete estimates of the burden of COVID-19, as well as how the virus differentially affected sociodemographic groups. The authors also explore how the virus disrupted health and social systems.

Vanessa Villaverde, MHSA ‘17 joins the Georgetown University School of Nursing and Health Studies Advisory Board. She hopes her position on the board will enable her to share her enthusiasm for the opportunities of startup creation with current health systems administration students.

Ken West, MHSA ‘09 was named president and CEO at Regional Medical Center of San Jose. Since 2009, he has worked at HCA Healthcare hospitals in Virginia, Florida and California with increasing responsibility in executive leadership roles.

Lara Wilson, MHSA ‘08 was named director of Rural Health Care Transformation at UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown. She will be leading rural health transformation initiatives from her experience in the nonprofit, hospital and community health industries.

Faculty and Staff News Derek Griffith joined the department as a professor and co-director of the university’s Racial Justice Institute. Dr. Griffith is a distinguished scholar with expertise in psychology and public health. His accomplishments center on health equity with a special focus on ethnicity, gender and race.

Angel Phan joined the department as the program coordinator. She is interested in advancing health equity and studied public health with a concentration in community health and health promotion.

Fr. Michael Rozier will be joining the department as Visiting Professor and Jesuit Chair to NHS in 2022. Fr. Rozier has an academic background in public health, moral theology, and health administration. He will be teaching Delivering Care Across Continuum in Spring 2022 and deliver the annual NHS Values Based Lecture on February 24, 2022. In addition to teaching, Father Rozier will support efforts to better integrate our core values in 12 teaching, research, and service.

Faculty and Staff News Danielle “Dani” Simcic joined the department as the Associate Director of Graduate Studies for the Master of Science in Health Systems Administration. Dani is a student affairs professional by training with 10 years of experience in the field of higher education.

After 12 years of dedication, Laura Anderko retired in June. During her tenure, Dr. Anderko served as the Robert and Kathleen Scanlon Endowed Chair for Values Based Health Care. In addition to her productivity in teaching, research, and scholarship, Dr. Anderko was a champion for the NHS public health minor and her leadership was instrumental in increasing the number of students who pursued the minor.

After 25 years of dedication, Patricia Cloonan, former chair of the department and dean of the School of Nursing & Health Studies retired this year. Dr. Cloonan says the focus of her work has been driven by the overall commitment to engage students in the extraordinary domain of health and health care within the context of Jesuit values.

Department News HSA Department and AARP DC Collaboration Results in New Study of Disparities • In collaboration with AARP, Christopher King, Patricia Cloonan, and alum Amelia Bedri, MHSA’20 coauthored a report that highlights health and socioeconomic disparities in Black older adults in the District of Columbia when compared with other racial groups.

HSA Department Partners with MedStar Health on New Community Health Needs Assessment • As part of it’s triennial cycle, the department provides quantitative and qualitative services to support MedStar Health’s Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). In 2021, Christopher King served as the faculty lead. Current student, Karan Buddala, HCMP ’23 and two alumni, Amelia Bedri, MHSA’20 and Arylene Campos, HCMP ’21 contributed to the body of work.

HSA Department Helps Create Implicit Bias Education Module for DC Department of Health • As part of a city-wide effort to eliminate the harmful effects of implicit bias in medical settings, video re-enactments with narrations were created for the DC Department of Health. The purpose of the training is to explore individuals biases and identify institutional norms that perpetuate biases decision-making. The modules were created by Christopher King and Deliya Wesley, Senior Director, Health Equity Research, MedStar Health. The series was complemented by a video animation created by Karan Budalla, HCMP ’23.

Launching the School of Health Two years ago, President DeGioia announced the launch of two new schools– a School of Nursing (GSN) and a School of Health (GSH).

The Department of Health Systems Administration will serve as one of three inaugural departments in the School of Health. In 2021, faculty and staff underwent extensive planning for a July 1, 2022 kickoff.

Interim Dean In September, John Monahan was announced as interim dean of the School of Nursing & Health Studies.

Professor Monahan is the senior advisor for global health at Georgetown, and he holds appointments in the School of Medicine, Georgetown Law and the McCourt School of Public Policy. He began his work with Georgetown more than two decades ago.
