Letter from the Chair Greetings from the Hilltop!

This year was an exciting one for the Department of Health Management and Policy. More than anything else, it was marked by growth and forward momentum. At the same time, we remain deeply committed to the work that matters most in the department and across the university: the formation of students and the production of new and valuable knowledge.

In this annual report, we highlight achievements made by our students, alumni, staff, and faculty. We also highlight departmental successes in the education, research, and service that improves the lives of people in our community and around the world.

A few things in particular that I would like to highlight: • This summer, we were proud to graduate 26 undergraduates, who have now joined our alumni community. We are excited to see the good they do in the coming years.

• We also graduated 17 Master of Science in Health Systems Administration Students. Though they are the first graduates of our newly revamped program, they are part of a long and distinguished history of MHSA students who are taking up leadership roles to improve healthcare.

• We had 41 new students join our community. They include 17 first-year undergraduates and 12 undergrads who transferred into the Healthcare Management and Policy major. They also include 12 new MHSA students.

• Our faculty is rapidly expanding. We added four new professors: Maria Alva, Sam Halabi, So Yeon Kang, and Daniel Kim. Their expertise covers health economics, health literacy, health policy, and public health law. All are world-class scholars and teachers. Please spend a moment to read more about them later in this publication.

• Prof. Ryung Suh took on a new role as the chief of staff at the Veterans Health Administration. He remains with us on a part-time basis while serving America’s veterans and being integral to ensuring that they receive the highest standard of care.

• Tyler Hill joined us as our new program coordinator. She immediately dove into the hard job of keeping both the department and me on track, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

• Finally, throughout this year of change, our students, faculty, staff, preceptors, and other friends of the department made important contributions to knowledge and to the fields of health policy and health management. Read on for the specifics.

The department and I are grateful to all of your support over the past year. We look forward to building new things with you in 2024.

Commencement The School of Health held their first commencement on May 20th, 2023. Students, family, friends and loved ones gathered at Gaston Hall to celebrate.

Addressing the Class of 2023, Dr. Christopher J. King Dean of the School of Health, acknowledged the challenging path experienced by the students, including the pandemic, and charged the graduates to use what they’ve learned to help shift a system of sick care in the U.S. to a system of health care.

The School of Health was honored to welcome Camara Phyllis Jones, MD, PhD, MPH as the commencement speaker for the graduating Class of 2023.

For Dr. Jones, doing better requires the graduates to be “social justice warriors” and address racism.

Dr. Jones, a senior fellow in the Satcher Health Leadership Institute and Cardiovascular Research Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine, was presented with an honorary doctor of science degree from Georgetown before addressing the graduates.

Student Highlights MHSA students traveled to Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay as a part of an experiential learning opportunity.

While there students got the opportunity to learn about the different health care systems within these countries.

Students from the School of Nursing and School of Health – including Arthi Thyagarajan (HCMP’23) and Halina Kwan (HCMP’’26)volunteered at Food & Friends for the annual Day of Service. Students worked in shifts to help pack medically tailored meals for Food & Friends clients.

Jayla Romain (MHSA’24) and Micah Kinser (MHSA’24) were recipients of this year’s Foster G. McGaw Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to outstanding healthcare management students.

Student Highlights Kate Gabriel (HCMP’23) was the Tropaia student speaker for the First Annual School of Health Tropaia Ceremony. Tropaia is the schools’ ceremony that celebrates student achievement during annual graduation festivities.

MHSA student Thomas Levu (MHSA’24) was awarded the CAHME/Judy Baar Topinka Foundation Scholarship for Health Policy. The scholarship is awarded to a graduate student focusing on health policy who exemplifies ethical leadership and perseverance.

Faculty and Staff News Sam Halabi joined the department as a Full Professor in July. He will also serve as the Director of The Center for Transformational Health Law.

Dr. So-Yeon Kang joined the department as a tenure-line Assistant Professor in July. Dr. Kang holds a PhD in Health Service Research and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Robert Friedland returned from his sabbatical year in August.

Faculty and Staff News Dr. Daniel Kim joined the department as an Assistant Professor in July. Prior to joining the department he was an Assistant Professor at Idaho State University.

Dr. Gutekin Gollu transitioned into the role of MHSA Faculty Director in July.

Dr. Maria Alva joined the department in July as an Assistant Professor.

Before joining the department she was at McCourt School of Public Policy.
