In the heart of the Canadian Rockies, sits Banff National Park - staggering views appear at every turn here. Snow-capped mountains, crystal-clear lakes, sparkling streams and swathes of forest are just some of the attractions in this stunning destination. Don’t forget about the abundant of wildlife too – grizzly bears, elk, and mountain goats roam freely. Lake Louise is of course the jewel here, with its glacial, jade-green lake set high in the mountains and surrounded by dramatic, soaring peaks – it’s no wonder it’s described as one of Canada's most beautiful locations.
A true Eden for nature lovers, Monteverde’s misty forests are alive with biodiversity. Towering trees are draped in moss, and colourful orchids bloom in abundance. Treetop walkways offer a unique way to explore this magical, mist-covered world. If you don’t spot, you’ll definitely hear the incredibly vocal howler monkey and it’s also one of the best places to spot the resplendent quetzal, a dazzling green and red bird sacred to the ancient Maya.
Situated at the meeting point of three countries – Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina – Iguaçu Falls is a force of nature and is considered one of the world's largest natural wonders. Higher than Niagara, wider than Victoria, Iguaçú actually consists of 275 separate falls which plunge into the water below, creating a deafening roar and a constant mist that shrouds the surrounding rainforest. The walkways even bring you close enough to feel the spray creating a unique experience.
Carved by the Colorado River over millions of years, the Grand Canyon is one of the most awe-inspiring sights on the planet. The sheer scale of this vast chasm, with its layers of red and gold rock will leave you speechless. This mile-deep canyon is a breathtaking sight however viewed, whether it’s from the ground or air, the canyon’s ever-changing light and colours make every visit unique.
Perched high in the Andes, the incredible ‘Lost City’ of Machu Picchu is the crown jewel of South America. This ancient Incan city, hidden in the clouds for centuries, was rediscovered in 1911 and is a marvel of engineering and mystery. Your first glimpse of the stone ruins against the lush green mountains is nothing short of magical. Explore the fascinating citadel and don’t forget to look down at the valleys swathed in jungle below.
Energetic, exciting and entertaining –Rio de Janeiro is bursting with energy and home to the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer. Built in 1931 as a symbol of peace, it is listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and standing at 38 metres high it looks down onto the city and its people. Head to the top of sugarloaf mountain for incredible views of the city and Christ the Redeemer and make sure you relax on the famous Copacabana beach with a caipirinha in hand.
“The tour was excellent, with a Holiday Director and driver who accompanied us the whole way, plus some local guides with intimate knowledge of the cities we were visiting. The tour exceeded our expectations and enabled us to tick o so many items from our bucket list. Thank you Travelsphere!”

Better known by its famous moniker, The Rock, Alcatraz was America’s maximum-security prison notorious for its celebrity inmates and failed breakout attempts. Here’s everything you need to know about this spooky but iconic landmark isolated on its own island just over a mile from San Francisco Bay.
The site of America’s most famous penitentiary was discovered by Juan Manuel de Ayala, a Spanish explorer who sailed the first ship into San Francisco Bay on 5 August 1775. Declaring the 22-acre rocky outcrop La Isla de los Alcatraces (translating as ‘Island of the Pelicans’ after its plentiful feathery visitors), it became simply known by its English name - Alcatraz. Years later, it was converted into a fort and an American Civil War military detention, before finally operating as a federal prison from 1934 until 1963. While there were no facilities for capital punishment (criminals handed a death sentence were transferred to San Quentin State Penitentiary) eight prisoners were murdered, five committed suicide, and 36 tried to escape.
Of the 1,576 prisoners incarcerated at Alcatraz, gangster Al Capone was the most legendary. Not only was the charismatic mob boss among the first to occupy the sinister facility in August 1934, but he was also thought to have bribed the guards for preferential treatment and extra privileges during his four-year sentence for tax evasion. Known as Convict 85, he was allowed to play banjo in the prison band, the Rock Islanders, and live in a cell with upgraded amenities. Other notable inmates included bank robber and kidnapper George ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly and celebrated outlaw Roy Gardner. Equally illustrious was psychopathic murderer Robert Franklin Stroud, the so-called ‘Birdman of Alcatraz’ whose 1955 biography by Thomas E Gaddis was adapted into a film in 1962, starring Burt Lancaster in the title role.
Smaller than a walk-in wardrobe and measuring nine feet long by five feet wide, the 336 cells in B-Block and C-Block were just roomy enough for most men to extend their arms and touch each wall. D-Block o ered more space, but prisoners here were confined to their cells for pretty much 24 hours each day. Facilities were basic throughout; there was a bed, toilet, small sink with cold running water, and no light. However, hot showers were provided and visitors (although strictly regulated) were allowed. The food was also considered the best within the entire American prison system, with menus that included hearty dishes like bacon jambalaya, beef pots, and pork roast with all the trimmings. At any one time, there were 250 prisoners along with 150 sta who lived on the island with their families in separate housing that was once Civil War barracks.
The island’s cli s were surrounded by the shark-infested and freezing waters of the Pacific Ocean, but that did little to prevent an estimated 36 prisoners trying to escape to freedom. Of these, 23 were captured, six were shot, two drowned, and the other five went missing and were presumed drowned. Security was extremely tight; doors had state-of-the-art locking mechanisms, guard towers were strategically placed, and the entire place was fortified by steel and concrete. Yet in spite of this, on the night of 11 June 1962, brothers John and Clarence Anglin and fellow inmate Frank Morris pulled o a prison break so impossibly daring their story inspired the Hollywood blockbuster.
After 29 years of operation, the fortified prison closed on 21 March 1963 because Attorney General Robert F Kennedy decided it was far too expensive to run - the cost of keeping an inmate here was three times as much as anywhere else in America. The island was designated part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1972 and opened to the public the following year. Nowadays, it ranks as one of San Francisco’s most popular tourist attractions, welcoming 1.4 million visitors annually. But it’s not just the cell house that garners attention; the prison is also home to surprisingly lush gardens, interesting birdlife such as cormorants and snowy egrets, and the first lighthouse built on the West Coast (the current structure was completed in 1909 as the 1854 original was destroyed in San Francisco’s 1906 earthquake).

Holiday Director Jacqueline O'Donoghue has travelled all around the world with our groups, but one of her favourite tours to do is The Best of the Deep SouthNashville, Memphis & New Orleans. We recently caught up with her to see why she loves this tour so much.
This exhilarating journey through the Deep South will immerse you in the rich, colourful, complex history as well as incredible music – country music in Nashville, Memphis the home of the Blues and New Orleans the birthplace of jazz.
Music is at the heart of this fantastic tour. It takes us to Nashville, known as Music City, and it's where people go to make their dreams come true. It’s where Johnny Cash first picked up his guitar, it's where Elvis walked into historic Studio B and recorded most of his songs – over 200, and it hosts the Grand Ole Opry, the show that made country music famous.
And Memphis, home to the blues, the world famous Beale Street and BB King’s flagship Blues Club. And then New Orleans, the birthplace of Jazz, a colourful, vibrant, multicultural city and home to the biggest street parade in the world – Mardi Gras.
There are so many wow moments on this tour and there really are highlights every single day, but if I had to go with my three favourites I’d say…
The recording studios in Nashville Studio B. A lot of the greats recorded there – Elvis, Dolly, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, Jim Reeves loads of them recorded there. And in the studio you can hear the voices of when they were recording songs and you get the chance to sit at Elvis’ piano. And then Sun studios in Memphis. It was where Elvis was discovered and they’ve got great memorabilia there. When you visit you even get the opportunity to hold the microphone which Elvis used.
Graceland - a lot of people go on this tour just for Graceland and some people even dress up as Elvis when we visit, which
is really fun. The house is as it was when Elvis died but they also have an entertainment facility now which has all the di erent museums, so all his cars are now in one place and he had some amazing cars.
Elvis’ music is played throughout Graceland, you see clips from his films, all his iconic jumpsuits and his albums. They’ve named the restaurants after his family members as well, so Gladys Diner after his mother, Vernon Smokehouse after his father and Aunt Minnie’s ice cream parlour.
New Orleans’ French Quarter - the French Quarter of New Orleans is another wow moment – it’s amazing, it’s like a living museum. We do a walking tour around the French Quarter and go for brunch at the historic Court of Two Sisters restaurant, which is really nice because we sit in the pretty courtyard with the jazz group playing and the food they serve is just great.
In the south they eat a lot of fried chicken foods, but Memphis is known for its BBQ and that’s always something I recommend.
In New Orleans the food is fantastic, it’s Cajun and creole food and things like gumbo which is like a thick stew is a must try. I’d also recommend trying a mint julep, which is a bourbonbased cocktail traditionally sold in the south and also the main drink of the Kentucky Derby, so that’s a good one to try as well.
good one to try as well.

SPRING Spring in Canada is a time of remarkable transformation, as the days grow longer, the country awakens with a range of colours. Cherry blossoms in Vancouver add generous spurts of pink to the city as hundreds of cherry blossom trees come to life. Apple orchids in British Columbia begin to bloom, adding explosions of white to the landscape. While in Banff National Park, thawing of emerald lakes mark the arrival of spring.
Whether you’re exploring the charming streets of Canada’s cities or walking through lush landscapes of the Rockies, spring in Canada is a time of natural wonder and cultural discovery.
As the bright colours of summer begin to fade, Canada dons a cloak of autumnal splendour.
The country’s vast and diverse landscapes are set ablaze with red, orange and gold leaves, creating a symphony of colour that sweeps across the country. In Eastern Canada, the charming cities of Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto offer a picturesque setting for leisurely strolls through streets lined with trees of fiery hues. In the west, sunshine and calm waters make for incredible sights in the national parks, and if you’re lucky you may see grizzly bears fattening up for winter.
In each season, Canada reveals a new layer of beauty. This diverse land invites you to embrace its captivating transformations. Come, journey through the changing colours of Canada, where nature's artistry knows no bounds.
Canada, a land of sublime natural beauty, unveils its captivating transformation as seasons change across its landscape. From the thick blankets of winter snow to the burst of spring's wildflowers, each season paints a unique portrait. Travel with us through the changing colours of Canada.
Canada in Summer is a season of pure joy. The country’s awe-inspiring national parks like Banff and Jasper burst with wildflowers, lush green forests, sparkling turquoise lakes and abundant wildlife. For unbeatable views of the Rockies take an incredible ride on the Banff Gondola. Glide up high over the town of Banff to the summit of Sulphur Mountain. From the observation decks you’ll experience superb sights of the Rockies in full colour bathed in sunlight. In cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, vibrant street festivals and sidewalk cafes come alive offering a fusion of culture and cuisine. Vancouver Island is undoubtedly one of the most exciting places in the world to go whale watching and the Summer months provide the best time to see these magnificent creatures.
Canada is truly magical during the winter as the snow and ice brings this spectacular destination to life. In the cities, historic streets are adorned with festive lights, creating a cosy ambience, but the true highlights of a Canadian winter are to be found in the Rockies. Prepare yourself for a sensory overload as you discover snowy alpine scenery, glistening glaciers, ice-covered lakes and verdant pine forests where wolves, elk and deer roam.
In winter, Lake Louise transforms into a magical winter wonderland. The shimmering blue waters turn to a powderwhite ice as the lake freezes over, and you can swap the lakeshore trail around the perimeter for ice-skating and snowshoeing across the lake.
Jasper’s national park can be described as a Christmas card come to life, with its snow-dusted evergreens and frozen landscapes. The ice caves, incredible ice formations and frozen waterfalls at Maligne Canyon are a must-see.
Travel ambassador, broadcaster and presenter Penny Smith, treated herself to a new woolly hat and joined us for an unforgettable winter experience in Canada’s Alberta.
What a holiday. People have asked why I wanted to go for a jaunt round the Canadian Rockies in the winter when it was positively perishing in Britain. Well I think I’ve proved why. Because it is immense fun. You’d be hard pushed to find a more amazing walk than the one down an ice gorge in Jasper, with turquoise blue frozen waterfalls and the opportunity to slide down snow packed steps.
The good thing about going in winter is that it’s easier to see the wildlife without all that pesky foliage. So we even got to hang out with a moose gnawing its way through twigs on a monochrome hillside - a fantastic spot by one of the group. There were elk, deer and some bald eagle nests as well. No bald eagles themselves…. they’re busy having their hair done in winter. And that’s another bonus about going in the winter season...you don’t need to bother about your hair because you’ve always got a hat on. And you get to have an exhilarating facial by standing in a roaring wind off a glacier. It’s a win win.
“Do you fancy some random facts? Canada is the second largest land area after Russia. Its motto is “From sea to sea”. Its national symbols are the maple leaf and the beaver. And a little fact from me… If you type “Beaver eating cabbage” into You Tube, it will make you happy. As did this holiday.”
Taking the incredible gondola ride up to the dizzying heights of Sulphur Mountain in Banff, we ended at a spot where you are surrounded by ridiculously picturesque peaks, draped in fluffy white pillows. And as for Lake Louise…. It’s not part of a UNESCO site for nothing. It is spectacular. In summertime, the glacial lake is like a sparkling aquamarine. In wintertime, you can skate on it, walk round it, play games on it and drink hot chocolate or mulled wine whilst sitting on ice seats beside it. As for the beautiful hotel, The Fairmont Chateau…It’s lush and luxurious with possibly the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in. If it wasn’t for the lure of a snow shoe shuffle through powder, I’d still be there. And Holiday Director, Caroline, made sure that we didn’t miss the sights that were a little off the beaten track - in collaboration with fab Matt the coach driver.
“Great organisation and assistance by the Holiday Director, Glen, throughout the trip and the communications sent to us by Travelsphere prior to the trip were excellent. This trip was the 6th that I've done with Travelsphere. Great company.”

We believe that we should take care of the communities we visit, which is why we decided to set up the Travelsphere Cares initiative. Through this scheme, we donate some of the profits from selected tours to help those in need – it’s a great way to give something back, and by booking, you’re helping too. Here we take a look at two such projects.
In 2011, two years after the earthquake that hit San Miguel de Sarapiqui, the CoopeSarapiqui cooperative established the Mi Cafecito Co ee Tour to try to find ways for the co ee producers to earn more money. Now The Mi Cafecito Co ee Tour is a tourism and agriculture co-op which has created many employment opportunities for the community and connected 200 local farmers with a market to sell their products.
On our The Best of Costa Rica tour you get to see the Co-op in action. During your visit of this community co ee plantation, you will gain an insight into the lives of Costa Rica's co ee producers. There will also be an opportunity to sample the co ee and purchase some to take home as a souvenir.
We have a range of Travelsphere Cares initiatives in The Americas and beyond. Learn more about all of our projects that you could visit at travelsphere.co.uk/cares

There are not many holidays where you get to scale mountains, sip on endless glasses of wine, explore iconic cities, ride under a waterfall in a subtropical rainforest, relax on a beach and see a Wonder of the World, but that’s exactly what this tour o ers and then some.
With an opportunity too good to miss, my friend, Ryan, didn’t take much convincing to join me on this trip. Usually it’s a long (and often painful) task to pick and plan a holiday, but this one lasted all of 10 minutes. Both of us had wanted to visit South America for some time but had never been on a guided holiday before, so it was a step into the unknown, but a step we can both now say we are thankful we took.
From the moment we arrived at the airport and were welcomed by our smiling Holiday Director, Simona, everything was easy and taken care of. So o we went on our South American adventure.
Our first stop was Chile’s vibrant capital of Santiago. Here we took a guided city tour which started with a cable car ride up San Cristóbal Hill. The hill is one of the highest points in the city and provided incredible views across Santiago and the surrounding Andes Mountains, we also got to try our first bit of South American cuisine – a Chilean empanada.
Argentina – I’d do the drive every week just for the views!
Sitting at the foot of the Andes surrounded by vineyards, Mendoza is the heart of Argentina’s wine region. The city itself had more of a town feel with wide tree-lined streets and beautiful plazas dotted across the city. During our time here we of course visited a few vineyards. I wasn’t much of a wine drinker before, but that all changed in Mendoza. The famous Malbec was like drinking velvet, while the Cabernet Sauvignon left flavours of blackcurrant, black cherry and blackberry on the tongue.
“Jaw-dropping, unbelievable, dazzling, extraordinary, spectacular, I simply don’t know enough superlatives to describe our time in Chile, Argentina and Brazil.”
The famous saying “it’s not the destination, it’s the journey” has never felt more true than on the drive from Santiago to Mendoza through the Andes. It was an early start but so worth it! We saw the sun rise over the mountains, weaved through dramatic valleys, and travelled past snow covered peaks. At this point, our guide, Cecilia, mentioned that some Chileans will take this drive across the border just to do their shopping as items are cheaper in
I was looking forward to Buenos Aires and it certainly did not disappoint. On our first day we explored the Recoletta cemetery and the famous tomb of Eva Perón, which during our time in Buenos Aires became evident how important she was to the city and Argentina. We then drove past the iconic Obelisk of Buenos Aires to Plaza de Mayo, and it was then onto the colourful district of La Boca. The area was buzzing with people, the restaurants, cafés and bars spilled out onto the streets, kids were playing football on every street corner and shops were full of souvenirs and endless Boca Juniors football shirts.
The next leg of our journey took us to the rainforest, as we headed to Iguaçú Falls. It’s the largest waterfall system in the world but nothing could have quite prepared me for how incredible it is. The
the waterfalls and volume of water is unbelievable – my photos and videos just don’t do it justice. One of my highlights of the whole trip was what followed the tour. We travelled through the jungle down to the river and hopped into a boat for an unforgettable trip under the falls, where even the best waterproof jacket on the market wouldn’t keep you dry. It was time to leave Argentina behind and visit the third and final country of the trip (and the one I was most looking forward to), Brazil. The iconic city of Rio de Janeiro was all that I’d hoped it to be and more. We travelled by cog railway up Corcovado Mountain to see the imposing Christ the Redeemer statue. It was bigger and so much more impressive in person than it looks in photos. We then visited another iconic Rio landmark, Sugarloaf Mountain. The views across Rio and of Christ the Redeemer from here were simply jaw-dropping.
On the final night the whole group went to a Brazilian Churrascari, an all-you-can-eat barbecue restaurant. Steak, followed by lamb, chicken, fish, wild boar, ostrich, pork and steak again, all washed down with beautiful wine. I don’t think I’ve ever ate so much in my life, but it was the perfect way to spend our final night.
To round o the holiday, on our last day we took advantage of our hotel’s excellent location on Copacabana beach and relaxed on the golden sands, swam in the sea and sipped on caipirinhas.
