Author, broadcaster and Just You Brand Ambassador, Janet Ellis joined us to explore the sights of New York City on our five-day Big Apple break. Here's what she thought of the city that never sleeps...
I have been to New York in the past, but for work and so it hits differently when you’re seeing the sights as a tourist. I chose this tour as I was curious to see if you can really fit in all these incredible places in just four days, and I have to say you can.
Sensational sights
The whole city feels like a film set! Our first stop was a New York icon, Grand Central Station. The terminus is an architectural delight and felt instantly familiar as it's featured so many times on the silver screen. The beautiful Art Deco Chrysler Building is just a couple of blocks away, the Rockerfeller Centre a few blocks north, Macy’s a few blocks south – the list goes on.
Taking to the water
Observing the skyline from the water gave us a fantastic perspective (we were really spoiled with a great lunch onboard too!). The Statue of Liberty is a sight to behold and a reminder of the diversity that makes this city so special.
Pause for reflection
Visiting the One World Trade Center was a privilege, and we paid our respects together quietly. It’s been developed into a beautiful and relatively quiet space and we all enjoyed being there.
Time out
With free time built into this short break, there’s opportunity for you to experience the city on your own terms. There are so many museums and attractions, it’s hard to choose one or two to visit but I would highly recommend the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side.
A green oasis
Central Park is an incredible space. Our local guide told us about the development of this 6-mile oasis, its place in New Yorkers' lives and about those who have contributed to the park.
My advice is to come and devour all that the Big Apple has to offer with Just You. It’s done in bitesized chunks so you can really make the most of it. And hats off to our Holiday Director, Kristina - it’s one thing having your itinerary planned for you but having an expert to guide you is worth its weight in gold.

TURNING UP THE FEEL GOOD
Consistently rated a five star experience by your fellow Just You customers, we were keen to get the lowdown on the highlights of America’s Music Heritage. We spoke to Karen Goodall to get her verdict…
I've always wanted to explore North America, as I’m a big movie fan and of course the US and Canada are full to the brim with filming locations. I chose America’s Music Heritage as I have never seen Nashville or Memphis before, and I thought it would be interesting to learn more about their musical history. There were 25 in the group, which gave me the opportunity to meet different people. A few of us really hit it off and we would tag along with each other, but then other days it was nice to bump into other folks on tour and spend time with them.
In Nashville, the Country Music Hall of Fame was a big highlight for me and just looking at the walls, chock full with hit records, was amazing. I like a variety of music, so this tour was a great way to not only learn about them, but gain an appreciation for them.
It was fantastic to get out and explore Nashville itself, seeing all the different areas and buildings. And when in Nashville(!) I had to buy a cowboy hat to get into the rhythm of things. At $40 it was a bit of a bargain and the US is a great place to stock up on clothing.
Beale Street in Memphis was an eye opener, the atmosphere is incredible with the sounds of live music spilling out onto the streets. We went to BB King’s blues club to have a meal and watch a band perform, we had a wonderful time.
I revel in doing something a bit different to the norm, and our Holiday Director Jackie was fantastic at bringing us all together for some unique experiences.
One of those moments was entering the Peabody Hotel in Memphis for the duck march. Watching them being led through the hotel by the Duck Master, it’s extraordinary, we were all captivated.
I’m not a huge Elvis fan but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Graceland. I learned so much about his life, I hadn’t realised he had a twin brother, or that growing up, his family were really poor.
I was taken aback by just how small music studios are, it’s hard to believe that they managed to record anything! The tours are great as you learn so much about how music is recorded, and some of the artists behind the hit songs which was really insightful.
If you’ve got your eye on this tour, my advice is regardless of whether you’re a music fan or not, just go for it, take it all in, live it and breathe it. There are many fascinating stories and unexpected encounters to be enjoyed on this trip!

America’s musical soul runs deep, and this journey takes us right to its heart.
We start in Nashville, the country music capital of the world, visiting Studio B where the Nashville Sound was born, and the Country Music Hall of Fame with its extraordinary collection of artefacts and gold discs.
