Gloria's MY JUST YOU STORY
MALTA, MDINAS & MIRACLES
We met Gloria at the Destinations Travel Show in London in January. The Just You team were thrilled to hear that she loves our festive tours so much she's returned to Malta numerous times! Here's what she had to say about her latest trip…
When I was a nurse in London, I worked every Christmas and New Year. When I retired, I decided that December would be a time just for me – and my family encouraged me to head off on my own festive adventures.
I've now enjoyed seven festive breaks, the first being Christmas and New Year in Thailand in 2010. These days, I prefer stays a little closer to home in Europe.
I love going away for both Christmas and New Year. I've now been to Malta three times with Just You.
My son asked why I told everyone about my recent Malta trip with such enthusiasm, as if it were my first visit, even though I've been five times. Surely it must feel repetitive by now?

Not a bit of it! I love the Maltese culture, meeting wonderful new people, and the island's excellent public transport makes it so easy to make the most of my free time there, especially as the bus stop was right outside the hotel.
On my latest trip, I was captivated all over again by a. As a fortified city, it's a truly fascinating place. Though it's over 4,000 years old, it carries an air of mystery and timeless beauty that I find utterly enchanting. Wandering its winding streets brought a wonderful sense of anticipation, you never quite know what treasure waits around the next corner.
I had a wonderful time in Valletta too. Being a London lady at heart, I've always loved the energy and vibrancy of a great city. Our local guide shared so many brilliant stories, his passion for his homeland was infectious. If you’re looking for a light bite to eat here, I thoroughly recommend the Maltese quiche at Caffe Cordina. The

cafe has a great spot on Republic Square so you can soak up the atmosphere.
I'd recommend visiting Mosta Church, which features one of the world's largest unsupported domes.. Alongside breathtaking paintings and artefacts, you can see a replica of the bomb that landed on the church floor in 1942. Thankfully it didn't explode and no one was hurt, but even as a replica, it brings home just what a miracle that must have felt like at the time.
Not your average Christmas
Christmas Day itself was wonderfully relaxing, with free time to stroll along the promenade. Simply sitting and watching the waves roll in was a real tonic, certainly not your average Christmas Day!
The hotel was first class; I've been telling all my friends how superb it was. My room was very comfortable, there were several restaurants to choose from, and the buffet was both varied and excellent quality, and there was even champagne served at breakfast. The staff were outstanding too, and it's often those small thoughtful touches that make all the difference, especially at this special time of year.
Fun and fireworks
On New Year's Eve, during our Gala Dinner, a Scottish band performed Auld Lang Syne and other classics. The hotel had a number of bars and lounges with live entertainment,so after dinner we danced the night away with the biggest smiles!
Our Holiday Director, Brian, was absolutely amazing, kind, professional and so wonderfully organised. I felt completely at ease in his hands. He thought of and took care of everything and even arranged for the hotel to call my room to check I was on my way down to dinner when I was running late.

Before I arrived, the hotel had given everyone hats to wear and the group had picked out a glitzy gold hat for me to wear, because it matched my outfit perfectly. It was such a fun, joyful moment, and just one of many examples of the spirit that makes a Just You tour so special. Everyone genuinely looks out for each other.
The highlight, though, was heading to the top floor to watch the fireworks light up Valletta. The vantage point was phenomenal; it felt as though the city was right there in front of us.
The hotel's location overlooking Salina Bay was perfect and it had direct access to the beach. If you've never been to Malta, please do go! Find out for yourself just how magical it is. And if you're thinking about your first festive adventure, my advice would be to think about what you truly want. I love history and warm weather, which is why Malta and Northern Cyprus work well for me.
Have a browse through the brochure – something will surely catch your eye, and that's the very best start to any great trip.

Janet TRAVELS WITH

Prague is honestly one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited and if you look up, you’ll see it has the most astonishing architecture.
But my visit was for the city’s festive markets, so I was very much keeping my eyes to the street level for the souvenirs, the food, the bright lights at night and the atmosphere – it makes it all really special.
There’s plenty of markets to explore, you’ll have a great time and, best of all, by travelling with Just You, you have people to share it all with too.
Our group were so enchanted by this city, many of us have said we would love to come back and explore again. So come and see it for yourself, you won’t regret a single moment!

Our hotel is set between the beach and the mountains, and just a five-minute walk from the centre of town. After time to settle in, we’ll get to know one another better over a welcome drink. (D)
DAY 2 MALAGA & MIJAS
After breakfast we’ll set off for our included excursion that will introduce us to the highlights of Malaga, famed as the birthplace of artist Picasso. Malaga is enveloped by more than 3,000 years of history, making it one of the world’s oldest cities. One of its highlights includes the elaborate Malaga Cathedral, considered one of the jewels of the Spanish Renaissance and visible from any point in the city. As you marvel at its exterior, you’ll observe its unique construction styles, as well as Renaissance features, you’ll see Baroque and Gothic elements too. It truly is a place you’ll want to stop and stare for a while to take it all in. Another popular site is Alcazaba, an Arab palace-fortress which dates back to the Moorish period. Built between 1057 and 1063 during the Hammudid Dynasty, its construction used elements of the ancient Roman theatre which sat at the foot of the palace. It's a wonderful sight to behold and the intricacies of the stonework and construction are so unique, you’ll be amazed by this feat of engineering, especially given its position at the foot of Mount Gibralfaro. (B,D)

DAY 3 CHRISTMAS EVE, MIJAS
Spend today at leisure or join our optional full-day excursion to Granada and the worldfamous Alhambra Palace. Standing high on a hill overlooking the city, the palace was built by the Moors in the 13th and 14th centuries and has been added to over time to become a magnificent 26-acre complex of pink stone courtyards, pools, fountains, grand halls and cool patios. It’s thought that the fortress boasts over one mile of walls and 30 towers just to give a little perspective on the sheer scale of this iconic landmark. The pure symmetry of the palace tilework is suitably impressive and conforms to mathematical principles in order to achieve perfection. The designers however had other ideas, and it’s said they included one mistake that’s invisible to the naked eye, as they considered complete perfection to be a defiance of God. (B,D)
DAY 4 CHRISTMAS DAY, MIJAS
It’s Christmas Day so enjoy some time to relax and take the opportunity to explore. Maybe you’ll decide to have a leisurely day at the hotel, or perhaps you’ll wander around Mijas with your fellow travellers. Back at the hotel we’ll get together for a festive Christmas Day dinner with wine. (B,D)

We are off to the beautiful hilltop village of Frigiliana today, situated in the foothills of the Almijara Mountains and the first stop on our included excursion. We’ll have time to explore its winding alleyways dotted with whitewashed houses and ornate balconies, and it won’t take long to realise just how rich the town is in history and culture. We’ll then head onto the

laidback town of Nerja, with its lovely sandy beaches and hidden coves. The main town and its narrow streets reveal charming trinket shops and traditional tapas bars. (B,D)
DAY 6 RONDA
Admire magnificent scenery as we drive to the vibrant clifftop town of Ronda. Steeped in history, the city’s strategic position made it a formidable stronghold dating as far back as Roman times. Enjoying a spectacular location on a towering plateau, the town is divided by El Tajo, a precipitous gorge more than 600ft deep. The gorge quickly captivates visitors with its rugged mountainsides, verdant valleys with the Guadalevin River running through. It's unsurprising that these very vistas have inspired artists, writers and travellers for centuries. (B,D)
DAY 7 MIJAS
Explore at your own pace today or join our optional full-day excursion to Gibraltar. See the famous Rock of Gibraltar, standing as it does at one of the world’s most strategic crossroads. The majestic Rock which dominates the Mediterranean has, over the years, been fought over and occupied by different nations. Crowned with history, the Rock of Gibraltar, as it is known throughout the world, is now an attraction high on the list for visitors from around the world. As a duty free port it offers fantastic shopping opportunities for hand embroidered linen, perfumes, Havana Cigars and jewellery including gold and silver to entice visitors. We explore Gibraltar in comfort, on an included panoramic Rock tour to give us an opportunity to learn about the Rock’s fabulous history, visiting the St Michael’s Cave and The Ape’s Den. In your free time, maybe visit the Alameda Botanical gardens, the Museum, or relax on a terrace at the Marina and enjoy a drink by the warm Mediterranean waters. (B,D)

DAY 2 AMMAN
This morning we'll visit Jerash - one of the largest and best-preserved Roman cities that still exists today. Your tour highlights are sure to be the Temples of Artemis and Zeus, Hadrian's Triumphal Arch and a street of columns that stretches for a mile. For lunch today we'll visit Beit Khayrat, a woman-owned cafe in nearby Souf for a traditional Jordanian meal. Later we'll return to Amman for a walking tour, where we'll mingle with the locals as we step inside the King Abdullah Mosque and look around the busy vegetable market. We'll also see the well-preserved Roman amphitheatre, which in its heyday could accommodate 6,000 spectators. We're going to head to a restaurant this evening for dinner. (B,L,D)
INTERCONTINENTAL, AMMAN (5 STAR)
DAY 3 MADABA - PETRA
A day of exploration lies ahead as we journey south to Petra today. The route we follow, along the King's Highway, gives us the chance to visit some fascinating sites. First is Madaba, where St George's Church is home to the famous Mosaic Map. Dating back to the 6th century, it is the oldest map of Palestine in existence. After you've admired this revered work of art, you've got the chance to make your own as we include a visit to a mosaic school to learn this intricate craft. After a traditional Jordanian lunch, we'll continue our journey

to Mount Nebo. This elevated ridge rises 700 metres above sea level and, according to the Hebrew Bible, it's from here that Moses saw the Promised Land. We'll stand here today and take in panoramic views of the Holy Land and the valley of the River Jordan.
On arrival in Petra, we'll enjoy dinner at our hotel. We'll be heading to the famous 'lost city' of Petra tomorrow, but if you'd like to start your discoveries right away, come with us on an optional trip tonight. Following a path lit by candles, we'll walk through the Siq to view the incredible Treasury building. This is also subtly illuminated by the glow of many candles spread out before it - a truly awe-inspiring sight. (B,L,D)
PETRA PILLARS HOTEL, PETRA (4 STAR)
DAY 4 CHRISTMAS EVE, PETRA
We’re going to explore Petra – a ‘rose-red’ city carved by the Nabateans out of vast cliffs, which we’ll reach via a journey along the Siq. The excitement builds as we walk through this long, narrow gorge, which is an experience in itself as the colours and formations of the rocks that tower above us are incredible. After walking 1km, we are rewarded with the sight of the Treasury building, which is almost perfectly preserved and features ornate carvings on its façade.
One of many wonders here, we’ll tour the site with a Local Guide, who will tell us about the Nabatean culture and show us highlights including intricately carved tombs and a Roman-style theatre. There’s plenty of time to explore at your own pace before we return to the hotel. This evening join your travelling

DAY 5 CHRISTMAS DAY, PETRA - WADI RUM
This morning we’ll visit the ancient fortress of Shobak. This is one of the largest and most impregnable of the forts built by the Crusaders and is an impressive example of military architecture. Every stronghold was built to be a day’s journey from its neighbour, and at night, beacons were lit to signal to Jerusalem that each was safe. For lunch today we'll visit a Jordanian family and enjoy a home cooked lunch of traditional Jordanian specialties. We’ll then head to Wadi Rum, a vast desert whose rocky landscape has been carved by the forces of nature. With sand dunes and sandstone rock formations of all shapes, sizes and colours, this magical landscape is sure to leave a lasting impression. Tonight, we are staying in the heart of Wadi Rum, where our hotel is in the guise of a Bedouin camp and you’ll stay in your own Bedouin-style tent. Once you’ve settled in, enjoy an included dinner of traditional dishes and afterwards, maybe join an optional stargazing excursion. As you look up to the clear desert skies, an Expert Guide will tell you about the constellations you will see. (B,L,D)

on earth, and its waters are renowned for their buoyancy and therapeutic qualities. Due to the high salt content as well as 21 other minerals, it’s impossible to sink in the Dead Sea, so enjoy relaxing and floating in this natural spa. (B,D)

DAY 7 DEAD SEA - DAY AT LEISURE
Spend the day at leisure enjoying the facilities at your hotel, or dipping in and out of the relaxing waters of the Dead Sea. Alternatively you can join an optional excursion to the nearby River Jordan and the biblical site of the baptism of Jesus. Later we'll enjoy a farewell dinner. (B,D)

a maze of cobbled streets, and delightful redroofed, whitewashed houses. It’s hard not to fall under the enchanting spell of this walled city. As well as spectacular panoramas, the city has many unique stories to tell too. It’s known as the Wedding Present Town after King Dinis and Queen Isabel visited for their honeymoon and the king gifted his wife the whole town as a wedding gift. From 1282 until the 1834, the town was controlled by Portuguese queens. Óbidos was also home to one of the world’s notable female artists, Josefa De Óbidos. A 17th century artist, the subject of her creations were mainly of fruits, flowers and inanimate objects. Many of her works carried religious meanings and so during free time here, you may wish to visit some local churches to observe some of her masterpieces. On that note, and with such beautiful surroundings, it’s perhaps unsurprising that Óbidos is classed as a creative city. A lot of traditional crafts are still produced here today, including the famous local drink, Ginja de Óbidos so keep your eyes peeled for it during your discoveries if time allows. (B,D)
