Health Department The Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency (NMCAA) has been given a grant from the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) to purchase diapers for families who will benefit from this assistance. NMCAA has connected with GT County Health Department and Benzie-Leelanau Health Department staff to reach families to give diapers to. Families were eligible to receive diapers for children under 36 months of age and could receive diapers for multiple children. Jennifer Brammer LMSW, along with other GTCHD staff helped facilitate this project to connect many local families to this VERY generous resource.

Did you know? We all know about benefits like health care, paid leave time, and retirement benefits. But did you know that the County offers other benefits? In the next few editions of the Communicator, we will highlight benefit programs that maybe are not well known, but offer value and cost savings to employees. 457(b) Deferred Compensation. Grand Traverse County offers a 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan to provide employees a convenient way to save for retirement and a means to supplement their pension, defined contribution plan, and Social Security benefits. Contributions into a 457(b) account are made through payroll deductions, and you may start, stop, increase or decrease deductions at any time. You decide how much to have withheld and invested from each paycheck, and it may be as little as $10 or 1% of your pay. Participants contribution is made pre-tax, which will reduce your current federal and state taxes, but you will pay income taxes when you make a withdrawal from your account. You can make withdrawals from a 457(b) account after separation from the County. Contact Human Resources if you would like to learn more about deferred compensation or to enroll in plan today!

Parks and Recreation "Where is the Director" "Where's the Director?" County Parks Director John Chase will be visiting the County parks for the next 10 weeks. Say hello and give him a warm Grand Traverse County welcome. Be sure to follow along on the Grand Traverse County Parks and Recreation Facebook page each week and let us know in the comments if you recognize any of the parks! Watch the video here.

County Clerk Bonnie Scheele & Chief Deputy Clerk Samuel Gedman "We are excited and proud to come into work every day because of the environment that Bonnie and Sam created for us in the County Clerks' office. We wanted to share our appreciation and gratitude for both our leaders. They provide a wealth of knowledge, especially regarding Elections, and are always sharing their knowledge with everyone within the office. Bonnie’s enthusiasm and love of the job is contagious. With her welcoming presence and warm smile she is really easy to talk to, she listens and makes you feel like you are special and needed. Sam has an outgoing personality that radiates kindness as well as humor that keeps you asking how do you know this. He also has a calming presence, especially during busy times, which is helpful during Election seasons. They both do an amazing job making the office a welcoming and fun office to be a part of.” We have the “dream team” bosses! - Christine, Marsha, and Rachel County Clerk Office

WELLNESS FEEL, THINK, LIVE, BE... WELL!

REV- UP YOUR ROUTINE

STAYING HEALTHY WITH A DESK JOB

We all have established some form of routine in our lives one way or another. There are certain habits or routines, however, that have been shown to help promote health, and productivity, improve sleep, reduce stress, and improve mood. Those types of routines may vary from person to person, but the key is finding a morning, daytime, and evening routine that works well for you! Some of the benefits of a morning routine include the following: Set the tone. If you begin your morning on a positive note by doing something to better your health or wellness, you’re likely going to carry that positive feeling with you throughout the day. Create a sense of control. There is so much that happens throughout our day that we cannot control, but a benefit of establishing a healthy morning routine is that we create a sense of control by following a set schedule each morning. Boost self-confidence. When we feel calm, cool, and collected, we’re naturally more confident. Plus, having a routine in place means that we can accomplish more throughout our day, therefore, leading to an increase in self-esteem. As important as it is to start our morning with a healthy routine, it’s just as important to end our day with a healthy evening routine to reduce stress, allow for relaxation, and promote quality sleep. Having an evening routine in place helps us to decompress after a long day both mentally and physically.

Quick tips and strategies to staying healthy: 1. Avoid static positions for too long 2. Start using work blocks 3. Do quick exercises when you can 4. Do desk stretches for better mobility and strength Read the full article and watch examples here.
