County Spotlight A great humanitarian example!

Corrections Deputy Andrew Bates It goes without saying that Corrections Officers have been faced with adversity and challenging times particularly as we transition out of a two year pandemic and we see an increased jail population with high risk offenders, mental illness and drug addictions. These challenges no doubt weigh on staff physically and mentally, but they seem to always remain professional and keep moving forward as displayed in a recent random act of kindness on behalf of Corrections Deputy Andrew Bates who upon releasing an inmate from jail provided them with his own cash so they could purchase a bus ticket to get home. Thank you Officer Bates for paying it forward and setting a great humanitarian example! - Captain Chris Barsheff

POTENTIAL ARPA PROJECTS

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

Organizations Seeking ARPA Funding: Grand Traverse County is requesting information to understand the range of potential projects that may be eligible for funding, as well as the likely amount of funding to be requested. Organizations seeking ARPA funding that meet the criteria listed below are encouraged to fill out the request for information form. The request for information (RFI) is not the official application for GT County ARPA funding. A more detailed application and evaluation process will be forthcoming later this summer. RFI form closes after August 8th gtcountymi.gov

With the RFI we are hoping to start to identify the playing field we are on when it comes to potential projects that could come through the application process. We have had significant input on how the funds should be spent, but we have not had the opportunity to identify the range of potential specific projects that are being considered within our community. - County Administrator Nate Alger

WELLNESS FEEL, THINK, LIVE, BE... WELL!

988 SUICIDE & CRISIS LIFELINE AND MICHIGAN CRISIS & ACCESS LINE

REV-UP YOUR ROUTINE

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is a 24/7 toll-free nationwide hotline, made up of a network of independently operated and funded local call centers (200+) across the country. As of July 16, 2022, 988 will be the new three-digit dialing code connecting people to the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL), where compassionate care and accessible support is available for anyone experiencing mental healthrelated distress—whether that is thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress. People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support. Moving to 988 does not mean the 1-800-2738255 number goes away. After July 16, 2022, using either number will get people to the same services. In the end, 988 is an easier-to-remember way to access a strengthened and expanded network of crisis call centers. 988 is not intended only for suicide-related crises. The Lifeline responds 24/7 to calls, chats, or texts from anyone who needs support for suicidal, mental health, and/or substance use crisis, and connects those in need with trained crisis counselors. The Michigan Crisis and Access Line (MiCAL) is Michigan’s statewide crisis and access line. The MiCAL staff answer Michigan’s 988 calls. It does have its’ own number because it predates 988, but Michiganders can call either number to get help. The Michigan Legislature gave Michigan an advantage by codifying and funding the Michigan Crisis and Access Line back in 2020. In doing so, the Michigan Legislature gave Michigan a head start in developing a comprehensive statewide call center. Public awareness activities and marketing are set to begin in early 2023. Our current focus and priority is to develop and strengthen infrastructure to increase Michigan’s capacity to meet needs and requirements. Once solidified, we will focus our efforts on marketing and advertising the 988-dialing code throughout Michigan.

We all have established some form of routines in our lives one way or another. There are certain habits or routines, however, that have been shown to help promote health, productivity, improve sleep, reduce stress, and improve mood. Those types of routines may vary person to person, but the key is finding a morning, daytime, and evening routine that works well for you! Some of the benefits of a morning routine include the following: Set the tone. If you begin your morning on a positive note by doing something to better your health or wellness, you’re likely going to carry that positive feeling with you throughout the day. Create a sense of control. There is so much that happens throughout our day that we cannot control, but a benefit of establishing a healthy morning routine is that we create a sense of control by following a set schedule each morning. Boost self-confidence. When we feel calm, cool, and collected, we’re naturally more confident. Plus, having a routine in place means that we can accomplish more throughout our day, therefore, leading to an increase in self-esteem. As important as it is to start our morning with a healthy routine, it’s just as important to end our day with a healthy evening routine to reduce stress, allow for relaxation, and promote quality sleep. Having an evening routine in place helps us to decompress after a long day both mentally and physically.
