first contact, with a series of leaders who represented the band in its dealings with outside organizations, and who both responded to and influenced the band in matters of importance. The membership is unquestionably Indian, of Ottawa and Chippewa descent. No evidence was found that the members of the band are members of any other Indian tribes, or that the band of its members have been terminated or forbidden the Federal relationship by an Act of Congress.

Proposed findings that the band exists as an Indian tribe were published on page 60171 of the Federal Register of October 18, 1979.

Interested parties were given 120 days in which to submit factual or legal arguments to rebut evidence used to support the findings that the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians exists as an Indian tribe. The 120-day comment period ended February 16…

This determination shall become effective May 27, 1980 unless the Secretary of the Interior requests the determination be reconsidered pursuant to 25 CFR 54.10.

anii Booshoo! It’s already Nimebine-giizis (May), the fifth A month of the year Niizhing mdaaswaak-shi-niizhtana-shibezhig nsa-biboongad (2021), and looking forward to safely enjoying the outdoors and sunny weather with family and friends.

It was on May 27, 1980 that GTB achieved federal recognition! It will be 41 years since our official date of Federal Recognition and, in looking back at our tribal history, there were three attempts by GTB for seeking federal recognition: Ben Peshawbe petition in 1934 (the same year the Indian Reorganization Act was passed); Casper Ance petition in 1943; and the final, successful petition Dodie Chambers, et al., submitted in 1978. The story of the 1978 petition follows:

A 46-year journey to federal recognition, and another 8 years for development and approval of the GTB Constitution, for a total of 54 years to establish a federally recognized tribal government, having a government-to-government relationship with the United States, with inherent rights of self-government through tribal sovereignty. Many Miigwetches to everyone’s hard work throughout the process, from our tribal members to Leelanau Indians Inc. to Michigan Indian Legal Services attorneys, and especially to our ancestors!

An interesting coincidence is that the Treaty of 1836, also known as the Treaty of Washington, was proclaimed on May 27th, in 1836. With that treaty, Michigan became a state in 1837, while hunting and fishing rights were retained by tribes in the bordering waters and ceded territory (2/3 of Michigan). Below is a map of the 1836 Treaty’s ceded territory:

On May 19, 1978, Leelanau Indians, Inc., represented by Michigan Indian Legal Services, formally petitioned the federal government for federal recognition on behalf of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, the fourth tribal group nationwide to begin the Federal Acknowledgment Process (FAP). Ardith (Dodie) Chambers, the chair of Leelanau Indians, Inc., drove with three others all night to Washington, D.C., to deliver the petition to the Department of the Interior, only to be turned back at the lobby. On October 18, 1979, the Bureau of Indian Affairs published a notice in the Federal Register indicating its preliminary determination that the Grand Traverse Band should be federally recognized. On May 27, 1980, the Grand Traverse Band officially became the first petitioner to earn federal recognition under the FAP… (Fletcher, Matthew L.M. (2012). This notice is published in the exercise of authority delegated by the Secretary of the Interior to the Assistant Secretary-Indian Affairs by 209 DM 8.

Pursuant to 25 CFR 54.9(h) notice is hereby given that the Assistant Secretary acknowledges that the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, c/o Miss Ardith Harris, Post Office Box 37, Suttons Bay, Michigan 49682, exists as an Indian tribe. This notice is based on a determination that the group satisfied the criteria set forth in 25 CFR 54.7.

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians is the modern successor of several bands of Ottawas and Chippewas which have a documented continuous existence in the Grand Traverse Bay area of Michigan since as early as 1675. Evidence indicates these bands, and the subsequent combined band, have existed autonomously since 2 GTB NEWS

Memorial Day is on Nimebine-giizis Nsimdina-shi-bezhigwongizi (May 31), 2021, in annual remembrance of those who lost their lives fighting for freedoms we enjoy today, lest we ever forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Poppies – worn not only on Memorial Day but also on Veterans Day – are symbols of loss of life and also of recovery and a renewal of life for those who survive (https://www.almanac.com/content/when-memorialday). Others may also visit cemeteries to clean and decorate the graves of those we’ve lost. A national moment of remembrance will be held at 3:00pm local time, to take our hats off and pray.

Chairman’s Letter

Keira Duvernoy and Jim Dulzo from the Benzie County Democrats invited John Petoskey and me to speak at their monthly meeting via Zoom on April 17th. Topics of discussion included Earth Day, the appointment of Secretary Debra Haaland, the Biden Administration, the American Rescue Plan, and an overview of GTB history and other areas regarding Indian Country. Over 60 people participated during the meeting. This was a great event, and time well spent. It was good to learn that other people in our area are willing and eager to learn about who we are. The meeting is posted on YouTube, and we plan on making a presentation soon with the Benzie County Democrats about our Lands Claim Initiative. When the details are set, we will share the link.

Tribal Council Meetings are held twice a month: Tribal Council Regular Session - The third Wednesday of each month.

Tribal Council Special Session - The last Wednesday of each month.

FishPass Project. There have been several local news reports on the legal challenge to this important Giigook Mah-jowag (FishPass) Project, which has been delayed until trial that may possibly be held in May of this year. I’ll be providing updates as we move forward in protecting the Ottaway and the restoration of traditional migration routes of native fishes such as the Nmé (sturgeon) and ogaa (walleye), while mitigating impacts of invasive species. Michigan was the nation’s coronavirus hotspot as of April 5th (https://upnorthlive.com/news/local/gov-whitmerreceives-first-dose-of-covid-19-vaccine Retrieved 4/7/21) where Michigan’s Governor appealed to citizens and visitors to “really put our foot down on the pedal on vaccines and implore people to do what we know keeps us safe: masking, distancing, hand washing…Whitmer says the problems the state is facing come down to compliance, an increase in highly contagious variants, and pandemic fatigue.” We need to keep ever vigilant against this dangerous virus.

To keep everyone safe, we would like to remind all GTB members and employees to follow safety guidelines and wear a mask if inside a GTB government building, an EDC facility, and/or any tribally owned facility. This is for the protection and safety of our employees and the entire community. It is also critical that Tribal members and community members wear masks in public gatherings, abide by frequent hand-washing, and practice social distancing. If you must attend a public gathering, it is imperative that you wear a face mask. Health officials have confirmed that public gatherings are now one of the top causes of outbreaks, and the reason is because mask-wearing and social distancing are not enforced, in some instances. Please follow and practice established safety guidelines.

Councilor’s Update

h-Boozhoo Aanii --Finally, nice weather is here, and April showers will bring May flowers as the old saying goes. By the time the newsletter reaches your home, we will have moved our clocks forward, giving us an additional hour of daylight and our bodies and minds will have adjusted to the change. The extra hour will give time to work outside in the yard or the garden, or maybe an extra hour to golf.

While COVID-19 numbers are trending upward, precautions are still the name of the game. There have been several Tribal Member inquiries regarding the reopening of the summer activities. The Tribal Council knows we are all anxious to get back to normal, but we still need to make sure we are exercising every precaution to keep the community safe. The Tribal Manager, Health Director, and staff are reviewing all pertinent information and should have some suggestions to Council very soon. Council will get information out as soon as decisions are determined.

I am confident we will have information by the end of April or early May. Please watch the Website for updated information.

On March 15, Congresswoman Deb Haaland made history by being the first American Indian to ever lead the Department of Interior, and the first American Indian to ever serve on the Cabinet of any President in history. This has also been an historic year with so many highly qualified American Indian people being appointed to positions in government that serve all Americans, rather than just the usual positions that only administer tribal programs.

The Tribal Council and Legal calendar in March and early April were extremely busy with representing the Grand Traverse Band at federal consultations with tribal governments across this county. On January 26, President Biden signed an Executive Order on Tribal Consultation and Strengthening the Nation-toNation Relationships, which requires each federal agency and department to submit a detailed plan of actions the agency will take to implement meaningful consultation with tribal governments. The Executive Order gave all 67 federal agencies 90 days to submit their plan, which means that these agencies only have approximately 30 days left to engage in official consultation with tribal governments about how they are going to carry out the government-to-government relationship with tribes.

Attending these Zoom and phone consultation sessions has been a monster of a task, but each meeting is critical. To make things even more challenging, many of these consultations are 4 GTB NEWS

May / 2021 Nmebine Giizis (Sucker Moon) scheduled at the same time or overlap. To address this challenge, Legal Department staff have been ensuring that we submit written comments to agencies with the Tribal Chairman’s signature as well.

An additional critical topic of federal consultation involves the new American Recovery Program Act (ARPA), which is the biggest infusion of federal money into Indian Country in the history of the United States.

The Congress appropriated $20 billion dollars to be used by Tribal governments for recovery from COVID-19. $1 billion is set aside to be divided among all Tribal governments and Alaska Native Villages using a formula yet to be developed, and $19 billion is set-aside funding for tribes through scores of different federal programs. Many of you have heard about this on the national news already. By the time this newsletter reaches your home, we will have moved forward on many of these issues because of the deadlines.

We are in high-gear and working hard to influence the development of a formula that most benefits the Grand Traverse Band members in our consultation, but our Grants Department only has one person on staff at this time to help prepare to apply for many of these grants that will soon be available. As a Tribe, we are advertising for Grant Writers for the Tribe and may be unable to take advantage of many of these grant opportunities.

At a time when people are unemployed, the Tribe has a headscratching problem: We’ve got plenty of jobs on the Government and Gaming side but few people willing to take them. We keep hearing about all the unemployed people, but we certainly can’t find any of those folks.

The problem is that a lot of those job openings are in the area of gaming, and these types of jobs are now being shunned by many workers during a fearful pandemic. Most job seekers, we believe, are looking for remote work. The problem is that those are not the jobs available right now. That is leading to a mismatch in filling jobs, and there’s an understandable fear of getting sick and then infecting kids or other family members at home.

A pandemic is a shock both to labor and demand and it’s a significant shock to labor supply. There are many, many people who have pulled back and are deciding to sort of wait out this year and come back to work when the conditions are right. But we need workers to survive in our gaming businesses.

Spring brings a sense of hope and optimism for better days ahead and this time a year ago brought many, many changes to our lives. 2020 was a year of extreme challenges, hardships, loss of family and friends to COVID-19, and our children were home with online learning. Adjustments and adapting to the restrictions, practicing social distancing, and wearing masks have been our new normal.

With the changes, we also had many unsung heroes. Chi Miigwetch to all or our employees, and that is meant to include all Tribal Members wherever you live, all the Government staff, Casino staff, and all the businesses under our tribal operations.

Continue to be safe, practice social distancing and wash your hands.

Grand Traverse Economic Development (GTED) Updates SPOTLIGHT ON WIINGASH PROPERTY GROUP he Pugsley property redevelopment progress continues along T as our hard winter days start to subside. GTED’s real estate development projects such as Pugsley, will be managed by our

real estate development company, Wiingash Property Group, LLC. Wiingash is the newest addition to the GTED family of companies.

Our current focus for this site is on developing a capital improvement needs list for building improvements based on a priority system. We are seeking funding options to help offset some of those costs. An energy audit has been started, to help us find ways to reduce our consumption and take a thoughtful approach to having a sustainable development.

Our marketing packages are underway to attract businesses to locate on our campus. Even without marketing, we have already had interest in available space for lease at the facility. Finding the right companies to offer a positive economic impact and job creation is our goal. In addition to our other work at Pugsley, local zoning requires a vegetation buffer to be added to offset our impact on our neighbors. We have started this process by supporting our local conservation offices and non-profits in multiple counties through their seedling and plant sales.

Supporting our local agencies is a win-win for all of us.

SUBSIDIARY CEO UPDATES Terraport offers a full range of Telecommunications and Satellite communications and Technology services and solutions through its own internal capabilities and that of proven, key teaming partners, ATLAS Space Operations, EPSG Telecommunications experts and others. GTED EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Elaine Clement, Director of Administration, graduated from the Traverse Connect Leadership Grand Traverse program March 18, 2021. Leadership Grand Traverse (LGT) is a communitybased program that prepares participants for decision-making leadership roles in areas such as policy, program implementation, and development. The program provides unique access and exposure to many of the major assets and leaders across our region, including natural resources, parks and recreation, community and economic development, health and human services, transportation, and agriculture. It was a very good experience learning about all the different organizations and meeting the community leaders in Traverse City. The program provided leadership training that was challenging and working with the participants provided unique perspectives on different scenarios we encounter each day in the field. I recommend this program to anyone who is looking to level up with their professional development said Ms. Clement.

Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails, Inc. (TART) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that formed in 1998. TART Trails’ mission is to provide and promote a trail network that enriches people and communities throughout the greater Traverse region.

Congratulations to Krystina John, Director of Talent Acquisition for being accepted into Traverse Connect Women’s Leadership Cohort 2021. This program is launching a new Women’s Leadership Cohort with the goal to learn, explore, challenge, and empower women through leadership development and problem-solving.

EverGROWTH Consulting will facilitate monthly sessions that are two hours in length for 8-12 members. Each session will start with a 30-45 minute training and discussion on a specific leadership opportunity. Topics will be customized based on the needs of the members, but could include: Can You Have it All?, The Imposter Syndrome, The Art of Communication, Courageous Leadership, Building Resilience, The Authentic Leader, Leading a Diverse Workforce, Small Group Dynamics, Bringing Your Leadership Competencies to Life, and Active Listening Skills.

The remainder of each session will focus on discussing the challenges that members are facing, and working as a team to identify solutions. We will spend time revisiting past challenges to provide ongoing support.

Behavioral Health Updates Human Services GTB’s wrap-around Family and Behavioral Health Services Mino Gizep!

In the Human Services Department at GTB, the Anishinaabek Family Services (AFS) and Behavioral Health Services (BHS) work together and collaborate as necessary to provide emergency and on-going services for all of tribal members and families in the six-county service area. AFS provides prevention, intervention, child protection, and adoption services for our tribal members and their families. BHS offers counseling, case management, psychiatric, medication assisted treatment (MAT) and peer recovery support services for your mental health and substance use needs. Our offices are open Monday through Fridays from 8am to 5pm with emergency on-call services available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Tele-health or zoom sessions are available to ensure your access to services while the building remains closed to clients.

May 2021 Heritage Library Events Join the Heritage Library as we celebrate the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians’ 41 years of Federal Recognition. Librarian Francis Carew will host a series of events on Zoom in honor of the occasion. These events promote the Anishinaabe oral tradition, literacy in children, enjoyment of music, and health and wellbeing. They are free, open to the public, all ages are welcome, and you can join anytime.

Notes From The Health Administrator By: Soumit Pendharkar GTB Health Administrator e have exceeded an important milestone. We now have 72% W of our GTB Elders living in the 6-county service area vaccinated. Reaching the 70% threshold was an important goal for the GTB Health Department and we will continue to vaccinate more GTB Elders going forward. Our next goal is for GTB Tribal Membership living in the 6-county service area age 16 and over to reach the 70%. This is currently at 46%.

Below is a summary of COVID-19 vaccination statistics as of April 19, 2021.

-72% of GTB Elders in the 6-county service area have received at least 1 shot.

-46% of GTB Tribal Members living in the 6-county service area age 16 and over have received at least 1 shot.

-2,910 doses administered including 1,336 fully vaccinated individuals and 242 partially vaccinated individuals.

-1,573 first doses administered and 1,337 second doses administered.

-2,145 Moderna doses administered, 761 Pfizer doses administered, and 4 Johnson & Johnson doses administered.

A reminder that we are currently vaccinating all Tribal Members age 16 and over and members of their households. We are also vaccinating all GTB employees including government, gaming, resort, and other entities, and their households. If you have been vaccinated elsewhere, we would appreciate it if you could please call the vaccination line at 231-534-7475 and voluntarily report this information. This will help us to keep our statistics updated.

Breakthrough Cases. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reported 246 breakthrough cases on April 5, 2021 that occurred between January 1st and March 31st.

Breakthrough cases are those where an individual tests positive 14 or more days after fully completing a vaccination series. GTB Health Department is happy to report that there have been no breakthrough cases among individuals who tested for COVID-19 with the GTB Health Department and are fully vaccinated. The MDHHS continues to examine its data. Breakthrough cases are expected with any vaccination, including the COVID-19 vaccines.

However, the number of potential cases identified to date do not appear to be in excess of what might be expected with the efficacy rates reported in clinical trials. Studies indicated that even if vaccinated individuals do become ill, they are far less likely to experience severe illness requiring hospitalization or resulting in death.

Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Pause. In an abundance of caution, we wanted to share additional information about this vaccine and the recent decision by the FDA and CDC to pause the administration of the vaccine. At this time, six cases of rare and severe blood clots in the brain in combination with low levels of blood platelets have been reported out of approximately 7.7 million Johnson & Johnson vaccine doses given in the US. All six cases occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48 years, and symptoms occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination.

Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare, with a rate of less than 1 in a million.

If you received the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine and develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination, contact your healthcare provider or seek medical care. If it has been longer than three weeks after vaccination, still contact your healthcare provider or seek medical care, but they symptoms may or may not be related to this vaccine.

Your safety is a top priority for the GTB Health Department.

Vaccination is the safest, most effective, and most reliable way to keep yourself, your family, and your community healthy and safe from COVID-19.

I encourage you to register for the GTB Health Department Lets Heal Telehealth platform. Please call 231-534-7478 to speak to our coordinator and create an account. A draft flyer has been included in this newsletter article. A mailer was sent to every GTB tribal member household. The Lets Heal telehealth platform is a convenient way to get care from your GTB Health Department medical provider from the comfort and safety of your home.

Additionally, GTB Tribal Members living in the 6-county service area are able to access Lets Heal for 4 covered visits for common conditions at any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, within minutes.

Get your free pulse oximeter unit with every registration of the GTB Lets Health telehealth platform. The GTB Health Department is providing the Nonin ONYX Vantage 9590 Fingertip Pulse Oximeter free to GTB Tribal Members living in the 6-county service area, while supplies last, with every registration of the GTB Lets Heal telehealth platform. Limit one per household, supplies are limited. Please call our coordinator Judy Stott at 231534-7478 to create a Lets Heal account. Registrations occur over the phone.

A pulse oximeter measures how much oxygen is in someone’s blood. It is a small device that clips onto a finger. They are used in clinics and hospitals and for home use also. A pulse oximeter reading will have 2 numbers, the pulse rate (or heart rate) and the “SpO2” or percentage of oxygen in blood. Some people with COVID-19 have low levels of oxygen in their blood even when they feel well. Low oxygen levels can be an early warning sign that medical care is needed.

Follow your health care provider’s recommendations about when and how often to check your oxygen levels. Be aware that multiple factors can affect the accuracy of a pulse oximeter reading, such as poor circulation, skin pigmentation, skin thickness, skin temperature, current tobacco use, and use of fingernail polish. To get the best reading from a pulse oximeter, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use. Write down your oxygen levels with date and time of the reading so you can track changes and report these to your health care provider.

When taking pulse oximeter measurements, pay attention to whether the oxygen level is lower than earlier measurements, or is decreasing over time. Changes or trends in measurements may be more meaningful than one single measurement. Do not rely on a pulse oximeter to assess your health condition or oxygen level. Pay attention to other signs and symptoms of low oxygen levels such as bluish coloring in the face, lips, or nails, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, chest pain or tightness. Be aware that some patients with low oxygen levels may not show any or all symptoms. Only a health care provider can diagnose a medical condition such as hypoxia (low oxygen levels).

If you are concerned about the pulse oximeter reading, or if your symptoms are serious or getting worse, please seek medical attention. Pulse oximeters cannot be used to diagnose or rule out COVID-19.

The GTB Health Department and the GTB Behavioral Health Department are now conducting the Post-COVID-19 survey. This survey is for GTB Tribal Members, 18 years of age and older, living in the 6-county service area who tested positive. The survey seeks to understand how COVID-19 impacted the lives of those who tested positive. If you would like to participate in the survey, please contact Tamra Newton (Community Health Representative Supervisor) at 231-866-1120. Participation is voluntary, confidential, and a participation incentive of $250 is available based on available funding.

CDC & FDA Statement / Lets Heal

Joint CDC and FDA Statement On J& J Vaccine s of April 12, more than 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & A Johnson (Janssen) vaccine have been administered in the U.S. CDC and FDA are reviewing data involving six reported U.S.

cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the J&J vaccine. In these cases, a type of blood clot called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) was seen in combination with low levels of blood platelets (thrombocytopenia).

All six cases occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48, and symptoms occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination.

Treatment of this specific type of blood clot is different from the treatment that might typically be administered. Usually, an anticoagulant drug called heparin is used to treat blood clots.

In this setting, administration of heparin may be dangerous, and alternative treatments need to be given.

CDC will convene a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on Wednesday to further review these cases and assess their potential significance. FDA will review that analysis as it also investigates these cases. Until that process is complete, we are recommending a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution. This is important, in part, to ensure that the health care provider community is aware of the potential for these adverse events and can plan for proper recognition and management due to the unique treatment required with this type of blood clot.

Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare. COVID-19 vaccine safety is a top priority for the federal government, and we take all reports of health problems following COVID-19 vaccination very seriously. People who have received the J&J vaccine who develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination should contact their health care provider. Health care providers are asked to report adverse events to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System at https://vaers.hhs.gov/reportevent.html.

2020 Census Apportionment Results Delivered to the President he U.S. Census Bureau announced today that the 2020 Census T shows the resident population of the United States on April 1, 2020, was 331,449,281.

The U.S. resident population represents the total number of people living in the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The resident population increased by 22,703,743 or 7.4% from 308,745,538 in 2010.

“The American public deserves a big thank you for its overwhelming response to the 2020 Census,” Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo said. “Despite many challenges, our nation completed a census for the 24th time. This act is fundamental to our democracy and a declaration of our growth and resilience. I also want to thank the team at the U.S. Census Bureau, who overcame unprecedented challenges to collect and produce high-quality data that will inform decision-making for years to come.”

“We are proud to release these first results from the 2020 Census today. These results reflect the tireless commitment from the entire Census Bureau team to produce the highest-quality statistics that will continue to shape the future of our country,” acting Census Bureau Director Ron Jarmin said. “And in a first for the Census Bureau, we are releasing data quality metrics on the same day we’re making the resident population counts available to the public. We are confident that today’s 2020 Census results meet our high data quality standards.”

The new resident population statistics for the United States, each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico are available on census.gov. · The most populous state was California (39,538,223); the least populous was Wyoming (576,851).

“Our work doesn’t stop here,” added acting Director Jarmin.

“Now that the apportionment counts are delivered, we will begin the additional activities needed to create and deliver the redistricting data that were previously delayed due to COVID-19.”

Redistricting data include the local area counts states need to redraw or “redistrict” legislative boundaries. Due to modifications to processing activities, COVID-19 data collections delays, and the Census Bureau’s obligation to provide highquality data, states are expected to receive redistricting data in mid-to-late August, and the full redistricting data with toolkits for ease of use will be delivered by September 30. The Census Bureau will notify the public prior to releasing the data.

In addition to these newly released statistics, today Secretary Raimondo delivered to President Biden the population counts to be used for apportioning the seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. In accordance with Title 2 of the U.S. Code, a congressionally defined formula is applied to the apportionment population to distribute the 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives among the states.

The apportionment population consists of the resident population of the 50 states, plus the overseas military and federal civilian employees and their dependents living with them overseas who could be allocated to a home state. The populations of the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico are excluded from the apportionment population because they do not have voting seats in Congress. The counts of overseas federal employees (and their dependents) are used for apportionment purposes only.

· After the 1790 Census, each member of the House represented about 34,000 residents. Since then, the House has more than quadrupled in size (from 105 to 435 seats), and each member will represent an average of 761,169 people based on the 2020 Census. · Texas will gain two seats in the House of Representatives, five states will gain one seat each (Colorado, Florida, Montana, North Carolina, and Oregon), seven states will lose one seat each (California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia), and the remaining states’ number of seats will not change based on the 2020 Census.

Upon receipt of the apportionment counts, the president will transmit them to the 117th Congress. The reapportioned Congress will be the 118th, which convenes in January 2023.

Community Meeting Announcement on PFAS The Michigan PFAS Action Response Team providing PFAS informational meeting for the Grand Traverse Bay Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians he Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART) invites you T to attend an informational PFAS community meeting for the Grand Traverse Bay Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Tribal

Members. PFAS are a large group of human-made chemicals that do not occur naturally in our environment. They are used in many commercial products such as stain repellents, fast food wrappers, and waterproofing sprays. They are also used in manufacturing.

Representatives from the Michigan Departments of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) will host the virtual community meeting on May 25, 2021 at 6 pm. After the presentations, there will be time for you to ask questions.

The meeting is planned as an online event, rather than an inperson meeting, to comply with current state measures designed to slow the spread of the COVID-19.

Happy Retirement Dr. Lee! he GTB Dental Clinic is wishing Dr. William Lee a happy and T well deserved retirement! Dr. Lee has been on staff with GTB for 10 years. Prior to his tenure with GTB, Dr. Lee was in private practice for 32 years in Traverse City. Along with his work with GTB, Dr. Lee also supervised clinical internships as an Adjunct Clinical Professor for the UM School of Dentistry as well as an Adjunct Clinical Professor for Northwestern Michigan College in their Dental Assisting Program.

A small retirement ceremony was held to honor his many years of serving the GTB community. Tribal Council and Co-workers wished Dr. Lee well and thanked him for his dedication. We are sad to see him go, but wish the very best as he moves forward.

2022 Budget Hearing

To Dr. Haken, Mary, Shirley, Tamra, Mary-Jo, and Scott, My husband and I would like to say thank you for being there for us during a very difficult time, our time walking through Covid this last January. There are not enough words to express our gratitude that we have for all of you.

These people addressed above are the ones we seen help us however, there are so many others that were unseen to us doing the same things, helping others who were walking through Covid as well and for some, who are still walking through it.

Dr. Haken thank you for being there as we walked through this very real and debilitating virus. Each phone call you made to check on us (which were many) showed your true care and concern for us. You gave me hope when I needed it, when I couldn’t see the other side of Covid. I’m thankful you are one of my doctors.

Nurses Mary and Shirley, thank you for always being available to answer questions for Jim and I, for working outdoors in sometimes frigid temps doing Covid testing for all of us and for doing such a great job taking care of the clinic and the patients during such a stressful time. As I’ve said, I only know a few names to thank but there is a great team of people who has made this stressful year a little less stressful for all of us. Thank you to all of you too!

To all of you that made it possible to get our Covid vaccines, thank you. I can’t imagine all that went into each day you offered it to us. Everything looked very organized and very well run.

Great Job! Tamra, Mary-Jo, Scott and whoever else who made it possible for giving care packages to us who had Covid, thank you also. This act of kindness and love blessed us and so many other families.

This task must have been very laborious from shopping, packing and delivering. Thank you to all of you too!

Whitmer Leading by Example by Moving All State Facilities to Clean Energy by 2025 pril 22nd, 2021 - ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Michigan League of A Conservation Voters released the following statement today after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced all state facilities will transition to 100% clean, renewable energy by 2025.

“Governor Whitmer’s MI Healthy Climate Plan set Michigan on a path to carbon-neutrality by 2050, and she is making sure the state does its part to achieve that goal by moving all state facilities to clean, renewable energy by 2025,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “Tackling climate change will take local, state and federal government working together. Here in Michigan, we have a real opportunity to get to work with the MI Healthy Climate Plan that will create clean energy jobs, reduce energy costs and protect our air, water and health for the future.
