FishPass Project. There are no current updates to report on the legal challenge to the Giigook Mah-joway (FishPass) Project since the trial judge’s decision last May, who ruled that the Project cannot move forward and whereby the Traverse City Commissioners voted unanimously to file an appeal. I’ll be posting any updates on this appeal.

anii Booshoo! And hello to Miin-giizis (July), the seventh A month of the year Niizhing mdaaswaak-shi-niizhtana-shibezhig nsa-biboongad (2021). Summer is upon us and, as always, looking forward to safely enjoying the outdoors and great weather with family and friends.

Treaty of 1855, AKA the Treaty of Detroit, was signed on July 31, 1855, which ceded 1/3 of Michigan. Leelanau County and Antrim County tracts of land were reserved for GTB (please see attached map). This treaty was signed by an “Ottawa Chippewa Tribe,” and it provided for allotments of individual land tracts to Native people (40 acres to individuals and 80 acres for families).

Participants in the treaty signing were as follows: Three lead Grand Traverse Anishinaabe ogemuk – Aghosa, Onawmoneese, and Peshawbe – represented the villages at the 1855 treaty negotiations in Detroit, which lasted from July 25 to July 31, 1855. Several lesser ogemuk attended as well and signed the treaty – younger Indians educated in American schools, who could speak, read, and write English. The Anishinaabe representatives grouped themselves together as regional confederacies, with five groups: Sault Ste. Marie, Mackinac, Grand River, Little Traverse Bay, and Grand Traverse Bay…The Grand Traverse bands chose delegates to the treaty council as village bands (Aghosatown, Eagletown, and so on), signed the treaty as a regional confederacy (the Grand Traverse Band), but negotiated as a tribe (Ottawa, although one of the delegates was Chippewa). An entire chapter in Mr. Fletcher’s book The Eagle Returns is devoted to the Treaty of 1855 and it’s fascinating reading. Directly related to this topic is GTB’s 5th Amendment lands claim, which is based on the illegal taking of these treaty allotments without compensation. We are currently in a holding pattern until key presidential appointments are made and confirmed, and I will keep you posted on the progress of this historic endeavor.

Youth Pow-Wow. On June 8th a (virtual) Youth Pow-Wow was held, and it was so refreshing to hear the Pow-Wow drum and see the Pow-Wow dancers! GTB Tribal Elder and Veteran Linda Woods spoke as head veteran. Isadore Toulouse, Fluent Language Instructor, provided the invocation in Anishinaabemowin and had various language lessons during the event. Drummers included Tom Peters, Wally Hall Jr., Shocko Hall, and Ryan Memberto. Robert (RJ) Smith was emcee and did a great job pulling it all together. The young dancers were wonderful, some were prize winners, and a good time was had by all. Chi Miigwetch to everyone, including staff and community, for all your work in maintaining our traditions!

COVID Updates. We continue to meet on a weekly basis with government and EDC staff as we watch local, state, national and world news closely. Please refer to the Health Care updates in this issue for further information.

To keep everyone safe, we would like to remind all GTB members and employees to follow safety guidelines and wear a mask if inside a GTB government building, an EDC facility, and/or any tribally owned facility. This is for the protection and safety of our employees and the entire community. Please get your vaccinations, assist others that may need help in getting their vaccinations, and please follow and practice established safety guidelines.

July / 2021 Minni Giizis (Berry Moon) of the fresh water. The Great Lakes tribes are supportive of balance on dealing with growth and protection of our precious resources. We cannot support sending White Fish to extinction in this region and call that growth. That’s not a good trade-off.

That’s death to an essential Great Lakes resource preserved in our treaties. For Great Lakes Indigenous people, fishing extinction can be literal death to our cultures and people.

There’s a correlation between the dwindling White Fish – our staple food source – and increasing health problems. Fewer fish means more heart disease and diabetes. Leaders in Tribal office, in local business, and in communities now recognize the inevitable disruption or change that could have a negative impact on fisheries & recreation and the local economy.

Our biologists are identifying disruptions in the Great Lakes and the fact that we have a crisis in our water, and it is the core of everything we care about. We’re talking about food, fisheries, energy & energy production and whether it’s normal fluctuation in the climate or climate change, our waters are changing. Our biologists have been at the table making suggestions, evaluating the changing situation and offering ideas for how to make it stronger, and how to protect our Great Lakes ecology & fisheries to make sure they survive. Maybe the White fish & other species will be able to muscle their way back to the Great Lakes so all Tribal & other communities can prosper in the future.

h-Boozhoo Aanii --If the Tribes of the Great Lakes are not careful, the region could see something our ancestors would have thought inconceivable: The Great Lakes’ Last White Fish. The Great Spirit made the waters here to teem with fish. For thousands of years, five of our CORA Tribes – the Grand Traverse Band on the Grand Traverse Bay & surrounding area and the other tribes across the Great Lakes Basin – have enjoyed White Fish as the center of our diets, cultures, economies and spiritual lives. With the ongoing negotiations, a proposal was put forth that represents the best chance we’ve seen in years for restoring White Fish & other species to harvestable numbers. Not a day goes by that we’re not thinking about the future of the fish, of our people and of this region. We’re honored to serve on the Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority (CORA) Commission, a regulatory body that manages and restores fishing stocks in the Great Lakes. More important, we’re each members of families.

We’re great-grandsons, grandsons, sons and fathers. One of us is a grandfather. And we’ve made a promise to those ancestors who came before us, and to those who will follow in the future: The last White Fish is not going to happen on our watch. Throughout the Great Lakes region, we and CORA see people coming to the same conclusion. They see that decades of failed federal plans and dollars spent have not restored abundant, harvestable fish to the Great Lakes. Some species of salmon & other species have nearly disappeared from their icy spawning grounds and with scientists & biologists confirming the Great Lakes are warming & winters are vanishing, everything in the water such as fish supply & food supply will be impacted. There are still some unknowns to the true extent of the impact of climate change on the Great Lakes which could mean disruptions to seasonal patterns, ecological shifts & changes to the fish pattern, and less cycling of nutrients for food sources for fish.

Tribes across the Great Lakes have their biologists & conservation committees working on restoring the Great Lakes and our White Fish. Many have worked over the last couple years to bring White Fish back to abundance in the Great Lakes Basin.

There is a lot of hard work ahead of them as non-native invasive species are showing up on the lake bottom with warming temperatures & the shift of lake ecology, and the biologists and other individuals must keep up their long-term monitoring 4 GTB NEWS

The treaty rights of Indigenous people in the Great Lakes assured we would always have access to White Fish. We secured that specific right to the fish because White Fish & other species are essential to our ways of life. We can’t bring White Fish back in those sustainable numbers of the 19th and 20th centuries, but we can try to bring them back in harvestable abundance. We can only accomplish that goal by working together, and continuing habitat restoration once they’re out. It’s what our treaties have promised, and it just makes good business sense across the waters. It means more money in communities from tourism, recreation and revitalized waterfronts. It’s the just and the right thing to do. It’s the strategy and pathway the Great Lakes region can take to fulfill its treaty promises and to accommodate growth. We’ve made our promise to our future generations. We cannot support any more degradation of our fishing.

Not only are there concerns with the changing climate in the water, but we see the evidence with land-based food as well, and our farmers are struggling with harvest change. Our four seasons are not predictable anymore, with more frequent cold snaps later in the spring and a later start to winter has been taking its toll on all farmers. The stress that the changing climate is putting on the fishing industry is putting stress on farmers and forcing some to go out of business. The world is changing, and we must be prepared for it for the next generation.

Living where we do, surrounded by beautiful freshwater every day, it’s hard not to care about the lakes at least a little bit, but it’s also easy to take for granted. Why should we care about the Great Lakes? Because of the adage: We really don’t care about water until the taps run dry.

Grand Traverse Economic Development (GTED) Updates SPOTLIGHT ON GTED BOARD OF DIRECTORS e would like to take a W moment and remember our friend and GTED Board

Member Walter “Duke” Maniteau. He was a Business Mentor and also served on the Natural Resources and Environmental Committee for GTB. Duke served in the U.S. Marines and believed in the philosophy once a Marine, always a Marine. He lived his life accordingly being selfless and generous to help others in need and would support those who needed him.

He was always one to ask thought provoking questions and provided ideas for moving business in a forward direction. He was quick witted and shared stories from his experiences with nature and overcoming on the job challenges.

SUBSIDIARY CEO UPDATES The Small Business Administration (SBA) 8(a) program is a formal business development program designed to assist socially and economically disadvantaged small business, such as tribally owned small businesses that are at least 51% owned by an Indian tribe, to enter the federal marketplace through training and development in contracting, financial, technical, marketing, and management skills.

Tribal small businesses can use the 8(a) program as a tool to successfully market and compete for federal contracts. Tribes are unique because they may own multiple entities participating in the 8(a) program.

In addition, Indian tribes are exempt from competitive threshold limitations per 13 CFR 124.506(b) and are eligible to receive sole-source contracts of unlimited value.

In the Human Services Department at GTB, the Anishinaabek Family Services (AFS) and Behavioral Health Services (BHS) work together and collaborate as necessary to provide emergency and on-going services for all tribal members and families in the six-county service area. AFS provides prevention, intervention, child protection, and adoption services for our tribal members and their families. BHS offers counseling, case management, psychiatric, medication assisted treatment (MAT) and peer recovery support services for your mental health and substance use needs. Our offices are open Monday through Fridays from 8am to 5pm with emergency on-call services available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Tele-health or zoom sessions are available to ensure your access to services while the building remains closed to clients.

A drug called Naloxone, along with rescue breathing, can reverse an opioid overdose and save a life. Consider getting a drug checking kit to learn more about what’s in your drugs. When dosing, start low and go slow. Don’t re-dose for at least an hour, sometimes setting a timer helps. You can always take more, but you can’t take less.

Take care of your body. When the heat is on, whether you’re having some alcoholic beverages or taking drugs, remember to take bio-breaks, drink a bottle of water, sit down, and have a snack. Your body will thank you later.

Agriculture & Food Sovereignty eshawbestown Giitigan (Farm): In 2019, an agricultural site P was established on a hill just north of the Strongheart Center in “Eagle Valley”. The Ag. Dept worked hard over 2019 to install a well, provide electric, place a barn and fence a 3-acre plot to grow great food for the GTB community. 2019 saw over $4,000 worth of produce delivered to GTB members through the GTB Food Pantry, during the 2019 GTB Health Fair, and other community events.

In 2020, as the pandemic stymied progress on so much in the community, a team of active GTB gardeners helped to keep the Peshawbestown Farm productive. With a good haul of potatoes and other annual crops, this team provided hundreds of dollars’ worth of produce to the GTB community through the challenging times of 2020. A big Megwetch to Delora Wilson, Joyce Petoskey, and Danielle (Blossom) Paul for helping maintain our garden sites and keeping the GTB agricultural sites in production during 2020.

GTB Community Garden Agriculture Survey: In order to better gauge the interests and desires of the GTB community, the Agriculture Dept has developed a survey which responses will help guide future agricultural developments. The survey will be made available to members at major events in 2021, such as the 2021 Pow Wow, and other events that are held this year. In 2021, the Agriculture Dept has re-established a full-time position to help manage GTB agricultural lands and programs.

The Peshawbestown Giitigan is being planted with the help of a grant from Rotary Charity of Grand Traverse the GTB Agriculture Dept received in 2019. The plan for the Giitigan can be seen in the Peshawbestown Farm Plan below.

Included in this plan, and the grant funding, was purchasing corn seed from GTB member Virginia Fields. This corn has been planted in a ¼ acre plot in the Giitigan. The corn that will be harvested this fall, will be used in cultural events, elders’ meals, and other GTB programming. A BIG MEGWETCH to Virginia Fields for growing, harvesting, and offering this beautiful corn to be grown by the Agriculture Department for the GTB community to enjoy!

Kewadin Garden: The Kewadin Garden site saw a good deal of investment over the past 2 years. In 2019, the hoop house on site grew over $3,000 worth of produce, much of which was sold to Bourbon 72’s, the fine dining restaurant located at Turtle Creek Casino. This is a great place for the GTB community to gather, garden, and spend time outdoors together.

In 2020, Blossom Paul, and other community members sought and received a grant to purchase a shed, additional tools, compost, and other supplies for the garden site. Megwetch Kewadin Gardeners for making 2020 productive!

2021 will see the replacement of the plastic on the hoop house.

The hoop house requires additional work to make functional, including some framing, and general upkeep. Once new plastic is installed, the community should be able to grow vegetables well into November or December!

Benzie Satellite Office Garden: For several years GTB members in Benzie County have considered having a garden at the Benzie Satellite Office. In 2020 GTB received a grant to fund the purchase of several supplies for the Benzie site. These supplies include a storage shed, hand tools compost, and other gardening supplies.

In June, the GTB Ag. Dept. visited Benzie to install the shed, and prepare a garden site for use by GTB members in the area. As the Ag. Dept. moves forward, it is always on the minds of Dept staff to ensure time and resources are spread judiciously around the 6-county service area. Come celebrate Niibin (It is Summer) with the Heritage Library. Librarian Francis Carew will host a series of events in honor of the occasion. The events promote literacy in children, children’s health and wellbeing, and the joy of learning to play a musical instrument. They are free, open to the public, and all ages are welcome.

Come enjoy the relaxing art of Tai Chi with Librarian Francis Carew. Francis teaches Yang style Tai Chi, a low impact exercise that improves cardiorespiratory function, hypertension (high blood pressure), muscular strength, balance, mobility, flexibility, and mind-body awareness. This class promotes health and wellbeing. It is free, open to the public, and all ages are welcome.

Class starts June 1 and will be held outside the GTB Heritage Library: 2821 N West Bay Shore Dr. Peshawbestown, MI 49682. Social Distancing is required to participate until further notice.

Notes From The Health Administrator By: Soumit Pendharkar GTB Health Administrator e continue to make progress in crossing the important 70% W vaccinated threshold. We now have 76% of our GTB Elders vaccinated and 50% of GTB Tribal Members age 12 and over.

The risk of going unvaccinated impacts not only those who choose not to be vaccinated, but to those around them. Lower vaccination rates puts children under 12, who don’t yet have a COVID-19 vaccine authorized for their age group, at risk, as well as the small percentage of those individuals who cannot be vaccinated, or those with certain immune disorders. The more people are vaccinated, the more we can protect the GTB community.

All COVID-19 vaccines currently authorized for emergency use have been proven to be highly effective at preventing severe disease and against known variants, including the highly infectious variant known as Delta.

Below is a breakdown of identified COVID-19 cases caused by all variants of concern in Michigan as of June 14, 2021.

The GTB Health Department and the GTB Behavioral Health Department are continuing to conduct the Post-COVID-19 survey.

This survey is for GTB Tribal Members, 18 years of age and older, living in the 6-county service area who tested positive. The survey seeks to understand how COVID-19 impacted the lives of those who tested positive. If you would like to participate in the survey, please contact Tamra Newton (Community Health Representative Supervisor) at 231-866-1120. Participation is voluntary, confidential, and a participation incentive of $250 is available based on available funding.

The American Indian Commercial Tobacco Program (AICTP) is a free resource dedicated to helping Native Americans in Michigan begin their journey to quit using commercial tobacco.

In Anishinaabe culture, traditional tobacco is a sacred medicine used for prayer, ceremony, and offered as a gift.

The AICTP offers up to 10 coaching calls per quit attempt with a dedicated Native American coach scheduled at a convenient time. If medically eligible, callers can sign up for 8 weeks of nicotine patches, gum and lozenges or combinations of these medicines to increase the chance of quitting commercial tobacco for good.

The program is open to men, women, pregnant women and youth on their journey to quit using commercial tobacco.

Baby’s Breath Workbee Join ISN to remove baby’s breath from Elberta Beach in Benzie County! Spreading over northwest Michigan’s beaches and dunes, baby’s breath crowds out native plants and degrades important habitat. Help restore Elberta Beach back to a diverse, healthy landscape! With a deep taproot, removal is hard work but extremely rewarding. Shovels and other tools will be provided but please bring your own work gloves to protect your hands while using shovels. Long pants are recommended as there is some poison ivy on the beach. Registration is required. COVID-19 event protocols will be followed.

Autumn Olive Community Workshops Autumn olive is a troublesome invasive species that can quickly take over a landscape and crowd out native plants and animals. With thousands of seeds and an extensive root system, management can seem overwhelming – especially once plants grow to be quite large. Fortunately, with some effort and the right knowledge, autumn olive can be controlled with chemicals or using mechanical methods. ISN is hosting two workshops to communicate the options available to landowners struggling with the plant. They will review how to identify autumn olive at various stages of growth and provide hands-on removal demonstrations. There will also be information available regarding landowner assistance programs if the outbreak is too large to personally handle. Registration is required. This community training will focus on: How knotweed grows and spreads The best time and methods for controlling knotweed Hands-on demonstrations at a knotweed-infested site Techniques for preventing the spread of knotweed including proper handling of waste.

Veterans in Crisis Veterans in Crisis Receives Over $14,000 Donation from Grand Traverse Resort & Casinos in Honor of Military Appreciation Month WILLIAMS BURG, MICHIGAN (WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16, 2021) rand Traverse Resort & Casinos G presented two checks totaling $14,103.88 to Veterans in Crisis today at

Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel. The donation will help Northern Michigan veterans who have been honorably or medically discharged with financial, mental health, and job support programs.

In honor of Military Appreciation Month, Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel collected $8,958.56 in appropriations through Food and Beverage Department specials and $5,145.32 from the Cash in on Kindness guest collection initiative at both Turtle Creek and Leelanau Sands.

Bourbon’s 72 Chef Will McCullough, who initiated the idea of a Food and Beverage department benefit, presented the check raised through a portion of the proceeds from 470 orders of a Bourbons 72 Prime Rib Special and over 10,000 draft beer sales over the course of the month to support the many local veterans that have offered their lives to keep the abundant freedoms we so greatly enjoy.

Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel General Manager Johnny Barrientoz presented the check from the May Cash In On Kindness program, which provides a collection box at both Turtle Creek and Leelanau Sands casinos for guests to donate their change for a change. The program has raised over $41,000 since it’s inception in February of

2020, with non-profit recipients including including GTB Food Pantries, American Heart Association, Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities, Father Fred Toys for Tots, Michael’s Place, Child & Family Services, Cherryland Humane Society, and FLOW (For Love of Water). Veterans in Crisis received over $4,000 in November 2020 and received such positive feedback, Grand Traverse Resort & Casinos decided to assist with fundraising through the May casino collections and upcoming Heroes Cup Golf Invitational this August.

“Veterans in Crisis is a veteran-led group that rapidly serves those who have honorably served us. The money will be used as a “hand up” for needs such as rent assistance, medical bills, vehicle repairs, and more for our veterans living in the 21-county area of Northern Michigan and the Eastern U.P.,” said Veterans in Crisis Chairman of the Board David Mikowski, who accepted the check on their behalf, along with the other two founding Board Members Vince Fotchman and Jim Sanborn.

Nationally Recognized Musicians Support Michigan Tribal Communities Highlighting the Need for Increased Vaccinations Among Young Adults n award winning group with more than 30 million plays on A Spotify is lending their music to Michigan tribal communities in a Public Service Announcement (PSA) encouraging the uptake of the COVID vaccines among young adults across Michigan. “The Halluci Nation,” formally known as “A Tribe Called Red”, blends instrumental hip hop, reggae, electronic dance music with elements of First Nations music, particularly vocal chanting and drumming.

These PSAs were developed based on local survey results and an assessment of demographic trends within Michigan. In large, data indicates that COVID-19 infections are highest among young adults between the ages of 20 and 29 years old. This same age group has been one of the most hesitant age groups to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Sharing reliable and accurate information while also debunking misinformation will help to build confidence within the AI/AN young adult population to encourage vaccine uptake.

U.S. Army Corps to Require Critical Environmental Review of Enbridge Tunnel WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23, 2021 embers of the Great Lakes Business Network (GLBN) applauded M today’s decision by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) to require an Environmental Impact Statement for Enbridge’s proposed Line 5 oil tunnel. Now the project will be subject to review under the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) -- a decision hotly contested by Enbridge.

“This is a huge victory for the Great Lakes and the communities which depend upon them, said Joe Short of Short’s Brewing Company. He continued, “There is little doubt that Enbridge’s oil tunnel will not stand up to scrutiny given the overwhelming scientific and technical concerns already looming over the project. We expect the results of the EIS to show what we have long suspected -- that this is not a serious project, but rather a costly delay and distraction tactic by Enbridge.”

Tribes, businesses, and environmental public interest organizations, including the Bay Mills Indian Community, which is represented by Earthjustice and the Native American Rights Fund,” said Whitney Gravelle, president of Bay Mills Indian Community. “We are encouraged to see that the Army Corps of Engineers heeded our call to undertake a more rigorous analysis of the environmental impacts -- and impacts on treaty-protected interests -- of Enbridge’s massive tunnel project underneath the Straits of Mackinac. Bay Mills remains very concerned that the pipeline threatens our way of life.”

Convicted Of a Crime? Michigan's Clean Slate Law Can Give You a Fresh Start In April 2021, Michigan enacted the Clean Slate Law to help those with criminal records seek expungement through the legal system. The law will help people find better jobs, qualify for housing and higher education loans, and give peace of mind that past mistakes are no longer a hinderance. Courts set aside your conviction(s) if you meet specific criteria.

Criteria You Must Meet •

Your crime(s) must be ones that can be expunged, or set aside. o For example, most criminal sexual conduct convictions, some child abuse crimes, felony domestic violence if you have a previous misdemeanor domestic violence conviction, driving while intoxicated, terrorism or human trafficking cannot be expunged. o Convictions for which the maximum punishment is life in prison cannot be set aside.

• You may have too many convictions. o If you have more than three felony offenses in Michigan you might not be able to expunge any convictions.

• There are waiting periods.  The waiting periods range from none at all for misdemeanor marijuana related crimes to seven years for more than one felony conviction.

The Process of Cleaning Your Record • • • •

You do not need an attorney to set aside your conviction(s). However, it is strongly recommended given the complexities of the law.

If you meet the criteria set forth in the statute, you must submit the required paperwork to the court in which you were convicted. You must also file this same paperwork with the Michigan State Police, the prosecutor in the county in which you were convicted, and the Michigan Attorney General’s office.

The application should include supporting documentation of why your conviction should be set aside, such as letters of recommendation, attendance at AA, or other improvements you have made in your life Once all the documents are submitted, a hearing will be scheduled in the court you were convicted in.

Costs • Free legal representation may be available to you if you live in one of the following 10 counties and meet in-

Attention Tribal Members: Letters of interest are being solicited to fill the remainder term of a vacancy created by a Gaming Commissioner’s recent resignation. This is an appointed position of the Tribal Council pursuant to: 18 GTBC § 205(a) The Gaming Commission is comprised of at least two, but not more than four, members appointed by the Tribal Council and one member elected by the membership of the Band.

Commissioners will serve staggered terms of four years. There is no prohibition on successive terms of service.

And 18 GTBC § 206 Qualifications for Membership; Length of Service: (a) To be elected or appointed to the Gaming Commission, an individual must be an enrolled member of the Grand Traverse Band and at least eighteen (18) years of age. (b) The Regulatory Department must conduct a comprehensive background investigation and credit check of each candidate or potential appointee. For each candidate or appointee, the Election Board or the Tribal Council, respectively, will determine whether the investigation reveals that the person’s prior activities, criminal record (if any), or reputations, habits, or associations pose a threat to the public interest, or threaten the effective regulation and control of gaming, or enhance the dangers of unsuitable, unfair or illegal practices, methods, or activities in the conduct of gaming. (c) A person must pass an independently administered alcohol and drug test substantially similar to the pre-employment test given to prospective tribal employees prior to being considered as an appointee or to be qualified as a candidate. Failure or refusal to submit to the test, or the presence of alcohol or illegal drugs at the time of testing, will disqualify the person from appointment or candidacy. (d) A person is not eligible for election, appointment, or continued service on the Gaming Commission if: (1) The person is simultaneously a Tribal Council Member, although this provision does not prevent non-voting participation under § 205(b) of this ordinance; (2) The person was convicted of, or entered a plea of guilty or no-contest to, a felony, a gaming offense, or any misdemeanor which involved an element of dishonesty or moral turpitude; (3) The person or any member of the person’s immediate family has a financial interest in any gaming activity or facility, other than the receipt of a per capita benefit, or an immediate family member’s employment in a gaming operation.

(4) The person is employed by any gaming operation.

Bee-Ware! Bee Hives Near Strongheart

Bee Hives North of Strongheart

The Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society is hosting a public event called Harvesting History Sunday, August 29 from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be highlighting many places, including the Mission Point Lighthouse, the replica log church here, The Dougherty House, (built with Native American labor,) the Hessler Log Cabin, and the Council Tree. We are hoping to exhibit Native American crafts, for sale or demonstration, and Native American harvesting techniques. We’d also love it it someone would like to plant a Three Sisters Garden near the Council Tree., or demonstrate native dances or music. We will pay $50 per exhibitor to help defray travel costs. We will be displaying work of other crafters and food traditions also.

In 2019 bee hives were placed North of the Strongheart. We are asking you avoid that area for the safety of the community Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians and the bee’s. The bee hives are managed

by Jelenik Farms LLC. Agriculture & Food Sovereignty Department GTB benefits from having these bee’s as they help increase pollination. Signage will soon be added around hives to help keep Apiary Location Map everyone aware of their presence.

Annual August PowWow Canceled The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Annual Peshawbestown Powwow, August 21-22, 2021 has been canceled for this year. We will be hosting our Annual Family Language Camp virtually, along with a virtual powwow on August 19-22, 2021. The COVID-19 virus first attacked our Indigenous elders, it has now turned its focus towards our children ages 0-11. There are no vaccines available to protect this stage of life from the COVID-19 virus. Our children remain vulnerable and it is our responsibility to protect our next generation.
