Important Membership Announcement The Compensation Committee currently has six (6) committee vacancies: • • •

one (1) appointment to be filled by the Tribal Chair for a 4-year term; three (3) appointments to be filled by Tribal Council for a 2-year term; and two (2) appointments to be filled by the Compensation Committee for a 3-year term.

Interested registered voters of the GTB membership who are not currently employed by the GTB government, EDC gaming enterprises, or the Grand Traverse Resort are encouraged to submit a letter of interest to the Tribal Chairman’s office.

Please note: you must reside in GTB’s six-county service area to serve on this committee.

The Tribal Councilors’ Salary Ordinance states that the establishment of the Compensation Committee is to address the questions of compensation, allowances and benefits for Tribal Council positions.

The open committee positions will be filled according to 1 GTBC § 404(d) of the GTB Code: The Compensation Committee shall be composed of seven registered voters of the Tribe.

(1) Two shall be selected by the Tribal Chair and have a term of offices for four (4) years. Three shall be selected by the Tribal Council by a majority vote and have a term of office for two (2) years. The other two committee members shall be selected by majority vote of the five selected members and have a term of office for three (3) ears.

(2) Vacancies shall be selected in the same manner as the position which was vacated by term of office, resignations or death.

We need your input!

The Grand Traverse Band’s LIHEAP Program held a public hearing at the June 29, 2016 Tribal Council Special Session for the purpose of reviewing the past year’s LIHEAP program and receiving any comment on that program and/or recommendations for next year’s LIHEAP Program! We want to continue this gathering of comments from you with application review by the following method.

Last year’s application will be available for review at the following sites: GTB Tribal Administration Building in Peshawbestown, GTB satellite office in Charlevoix, GTB satellite office in Benzie, GTB satellite office in Traverse City, and at the LIHEAP program office at the Medicine Lodge. We need your comments by the end of July.

Your comments will be critical in developing next year’s LIHEAP program! LIHEAP provides funding assistance to low-income households, targeting those who are truly vulnerable: the disabled, elderly, and families with preschool-age children.

LIHEAP offers one-time financial assistance to qualifying low-income households who require support in paying their home heating or cooling bills. Applicants must have an income less than 150% of federal poverty level or 60% of state median poverty level to be eligible, however some states/tribes have expanded their programs to include more households.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Act of 1981 (Title XXVI of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1981, Public Law 97-35, as amended, authorized a number of block grants including the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP, administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, authorized grants since 1982 to states, tribes, and territories to assist low-income households with the costs of home energy.

For a direct grant to a tribe, an amount is reserved from the state’s allotment. GTB currently has a negotiated agreement between the state and the tribe on the number of households to be served. If a tribal grantee chooses to run a direct-funded tribal LIHEAP program, tribal programs must include a heating assistance program and/or a cooling assistance program and include a way to handle crisis situations, usually through a crisis intervention component. LIHEAP grantees may also choose to provide a low-cost weatherization program or other energy-related home repair. The allotments are based upon available federal funding, and it is important to continue this much needed program!

SORNA: Who needs to register with GTB? The GTB Code pertaining to Sex Offender Registration has designated who must register with the Grand Traverse Band Tribal Police Department. The following individuals are required to register with GTB Tribal Police:  A sex offender who has been convicted by GTB Tribal Court, regardless of whether or not that person is or will be residing on Tribal Lands.  A sex offender who is incarcerated by the Tribe while completing any sentence for a covered sex offense, regardless of their location.  A sex offender who resides within Tribal Lands, is homeless within Tribal Lands, or is transient within Tribal Lands.  A sex offender who is employed by the Tribe in any capacity or otherwise employed within Tribal Lands.  A sex offender who is a student in any capacity within Tribal Lands.  A sex offender who is visiting Tribal Lands.

Registration requirements pertain to ALL convicted sex offenders, regardless of the court or location they were convicted in.

Registered sex offenders who are visiting Tribal Lands are now required to register their presence with Tribal Police PRIOR to entry onto Tribal Lands, and may register up to 72 hours prior to their visit. This includes entering onto Tribal Lands for ANY PURPOSE with the exclusion of patronizing gaming establishments or Eagletown Market, and visiting Tribal Court for a valid purpose. You are strongly encouraged to contact the Tribal Police Department at 231-534-7777 prior to arriving in order to ensure that someone is available to assist you with registration.

PRESS RELEASE: STANDING ROCK SIOUX OPPOSITION TO DAKOTA ACCESS PIPELINE AND GTB’S OPPOSITION TO ENBRIDGE LINE 5.

PESHAWBESTOWN, MICHIGAN, SEPTEMBER 1, 2016. The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians (GTB), by Tribal Resolution 16-34.2792, and a letter to President Obama, joins in the Standing Rock Sioux opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota requesting that President Obama override the Army Corps Engineers permit authorization for DAPL pipeline construction based on lack of compliance with federal environmental law. GTB’s central and independent rationale in supporting the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is GTB’s opposition to Enbridge Line 5 under the Straits of Mackinac.

“Both of these pipelines are scars across land and water that could injure not only treaty protected rights of Native Americans but also the land and water inheritance of all Americans. If we are to take these risks with our common resources, then at a minimum, both the federal government and the pipeline companies need to be held to the highest environmental and legal standard of review to ensure the safety of land and water for all Americans,” Tribal Chairman Sam McClellan said.

HEALTH CARE INFLUENZA

What is Influenza (also called Flu)?

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Signs and Symptoms of Flu People who have the flu often feel some or all of these signs and symptoms: •Fever* or feeling feverish/chills •Cough •Sore throat •Runny or stuffy nose •Muscle or body aches •Headaches •Fatigue (very tired) •Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults. *It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.

How Flu Spreads Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby.

Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or possibly their nose.

Period of Contagiousness You may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. Some people, especially young children and people with weakened immune systems, might be able to infect others for an even longer time.

Onset of Symptoms The time from when a person is exposed to flu virus to when symptoms begin is about 1 to 4 days, with an average of about 2 days.

Complications of Flu Complications of flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes.

People at High Risk from Flu Anyone can get the flu (even healthy people), and serious problems related to the flu can happen at any age, but some people are at high risk of developing serious flu-related complications if they get sick. This includes people 65 years and older, people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), pregnant women, and young children.

Preventing Flu The first and most important step in preventing flu is to get a flu vaccination each year. CDC also recommends everyday preventive actions (like staying away from people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes and frequent handwashing) to help slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu.

Diagnosing Flu It is very difficult to distinguish the flu from other viral or bacterial causes of respiratory illnesses on the basis of symptoms alone. There are tests available to diagnose flu.

Treating There are influenza antiviral drugs that can be used to treat flu illness.

So our LIHEAP program has weatherization materials available to those who meet the low income eligibility guidelines. So income eligible individuals-come in and talk to Connie Two Crow and pick up your window plastic, caulk, weather stripping, etc. to keep your house warmer and heating bills down.

Our GTB food pantry is open: Tuesday –Friday 8:30 am – 11:30 and 1:30 – 4:30 pm.

On Monday’s about 11:30 am the food rescue truck arrives in Peshawbestown with vegetables, breads, cakes, frozen dinners, etc. from the Traverse City stores. No income guidelines for this food opportunity.

Check with Peggy if you are an Elder Caregiver or know someone who would benefit from these services for assistance.

Domestic Violence Project Coordinator CTAS PA 5 Sequetta Brand 534-7348 The three year grant was granted a six-month extension beyond the September grant fiscal year end due to a staff vacancy for several months and so the coordinator position will continue providing direct services to clients that are victims of Domestic Violence, Stalking, and Sexual Assault by their intimate partner. The services include a DV Attorney to assist with divorce or other legal needs.

Cedar Oil

Several Tribal Members gathered in St. Kateri Hall to learn how to make cedar oil. Penny Concannon was the instructor and shared this message: “The teachings Jim and I received with the making of cedar oil: Cedar Tree is our Grandmother. She is the provider of blessings, to calm us by smoke, or using her oil, and to bring healing in times of spiritual, emotional, or physical difficulties, by applying her to the sore physical place or on our life spot, the place where our collar bone indents at the base of our neck, with prayer and gratitude. I pass on this tradition so we can all share in the gifts of Grandmother Cedar, and honor those before us.”

The cedar was collected from trees on the property and were then crushed and after several steps, turned into the cedar oil. During Mass on Mother’s and Father’s at St. Kateri. All mothers and fathers were blessed with this oil by Sister Susan Gardner Pastoral Administrator at St. Kateri Parish.

ELK TAG FILLED

I was hunting on private property near Hillman, MI with my brother Ken. On Saturday evening our guide took us to a small sand hill overlooking an alfalfa field where we saw 3 elk but they sat down before we could get a shot. We went back there yesterday morning and as we came up over the hill we saw 2 and a couple other guys that were hunting with us went around the side of the hill and saw 3 more.

They waved me over and our guide set up his shooting sticks for me take a kneeling shot. I waited for what I thought was the biggest one to go by. I shot him one time through the shoulder (took out his lungs) at 120 yards with my 30.06, he walked only about twenty feet and went down.

Later my brother saw an eagle fly over, we put our tobacco down and thanked Gitchi Manitou.

OFFICER AWARDED FOR BRAVERY

On April 14, 2016, while enroute to work, Officer Felipe Martinez noticed a home within his neighborhood on fire. Martinez being concerned for the well-being of his neighbors checked the exterior of the home and began looking through glass doors and windows to see if his neighbors were in the house. Unable to be sure that the home was empty and coupled with information from other neighbors, Officer Martinez entered the full engulfed home at great personal risk, believing that his neighbor’s children were still in the home.

Officer Martinez busted down the front door and quickly proceeded upstairs to the second story where the fire was located.

After crawling through two bedrooms and a hallway, he briefly looked into a bathroom that was completely engulfed in flames.

Martinez then made his way back down stairs to the main floor of the home and checked every possible location a person could be. From there Martinez performed the same task down in the basement moments later. Only after completing the searches did Officer Martinez feel confident no one was in the home.

On August 31st 2016 , In recognition of Officer Martinez’s brave actions and service above and beyond the call of duty, he was awarded a Bravery Citation by GTB Tribal Chairman, Thurlow McClellan .

The GTB Fire Dept. is inviting the youth 12 years of age and under in the six county service area the opportunity to name the mascot. His future name will be Firefighter(______).

HOLDING THE LINE WITH STANDING ROCK

The Standing Rock protest encampment.

The largest of three camps hosting representatives of over 215 Indigenous tribes and many other supporters against the Dakota Access Pipe Line (DAPL).

A Grand Traverse Band delegation made an 18 hour journey to show their support and join the massive indigenous protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline currently being constructed near Cannonball, ND. The situation they face hits close to home. The GTB and many local tribes are currently facing a similar situation. The “Rally to Protect the Great Lakes” was held on September 26th 2016.This was in order to “Shut Down Line 5”, another oil line threatening our Great Lakes.

The journey was led by Tribal Councilors Tom Shomin and Percy Bird. Delegates were selected to join this team based on their knowledge of cultural rituals, in order to share the best representation of Ottawa and Chippewa customs with the Sioux. As Paul Rapheal put it “to join our fire with their fire.”

Some 50 miles north of the protest a U.S. Army traffic control checkpoint is in place. The soldiers halt vehicles with barricades, and razor wire to inform those passing through about the protest.

Approaching closer to the camp there are tribal flags, and signs propped and tied to a wide reaching fence blocking the construction of the Oil line. With statements to the Army Corps of Engineers and local authorities such as, “Children Don’t Drink Oil,” and “NO DAPL”.

The Camp itself is an impressive marvel of strength in community amongst the indigenous people of this country and those who support them.

Make shift shanties and lean-tos mixed with the more modern tents RV’s and campers. Amongst these are traditional Teepee’s and long tents belonging to Tribes across the country. The sheer structures alone display the wide variety of people supporting Standing Rock. The encampment has set up a community kitchen, and its own security check points and personnel to ensure that photos are not taken in certain areas. All media must obtain a press pass to be allowed to use any media capturing equipment within the camp.

Upon arrival, Councilor Tom Shomin and several others delivered a sizeable donation to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribes Council Chambers of collected blankets, water, food, and camping equipment.

The following day, a check for over $5000 was presented to Standing Rock by Councilor Percy Bird.

The donations would be given to those who have already spent weeks, and will continue to stay at the encampment to stop the construction of the Dakota You can see the spirit and bond within the people.

UNDERSTANDING PUBLIC SAFETY Boozho GTB Tribal Community,

The GTB Public Safety Department has been very busy the past two quarters working on numerous grants for generators, enhanced COPS grant program services, State/Tribal ICWA Implementation Partnership Grant, OVW Grant to exercise special domestic violence criminal jurisdiction, SORNA Adam Walsh Act (AWA) Grant, and fire prevention and safety grants.

As we move forward into the new fiscal year 2017 the GTB Public Safety Department has some new program events and activities.

CTAS Tribal Victim Assistance Grant

The Public Safety Department applied for a twoyear FY2016 AWA Implementation Grant to enhance SORNA services and grant announcements are pending in the fall of 2016.

Tribal Police Department Community Policing/Neighborhood Watch (CPNW) Meetings are held monthly in order to discuss problems and solutions in the community and share safety tips. Meetings are held Mondays at 6:00pm: 1st Monday: Peshawbestown Housing Office 2nd Monday: Charlevoix Office 3rd Monday: Traverse City Office 4th Monday: Benzie Office.

The CTAS TVA program provides support and assistance to victims of all crime, whether charges have been filed or not. The TVA program provides services to federally recognized tribal members living within the six county service area as well as to any person who has had a crime committed against them on tribal lands. CTAS Tribal Victims Assistance grant provides victim services for all victims of crime.

The TVA Director collaborates with USAO, Child Advocacy Center, GTB Prosecutor’s Office, GTB Tribal Police, AFS, Tribal Court, State Court, FBI, Women’s Community members are invited to participate in the Resource Center, Child & Family Services, and County CPNW meetings. Officer Homan provides snacks and Victim Advocates is happy to meet and discuss community police issue Currently the TVA Director Jackie Barnowski (231) 534-7525 is working on completing a grant required TVA Community Needs Assessment (C.N.A.). The C.N.A. victim service survey will gather data on effectiveness of TVA program services and determine if area agencies are aware of the GTB TVA victim service program. The TVA Director will be meeting with victim service agencies, victims of crime, Tribal and State Courts and police departments to complete the survey to assess the TVA program and determine if services are effective or can be improved. The C.N.A. survey should be completed during the first quarter of FY2017. SORNA Grant The Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act is Title I of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006. SORNA outlines mandatory minimum standards for sex offender registration and notification for all U.S. Jurisdictions, including states, Federally Recognized Tribes, and U.S. Territories. The purpose of this act is to help protect the public from sex offenders and offenders against children. The SORNA two year grant (10/01/2014 to 9/30/2016) was extended to 3/31/2017 to allow the SORNA Coordinator Denise Johnson to continue SORNA mandatory requirements and make additional SORNA Code amendments as needed as well as process SOR Policies and Procedures. Domestic Violence Officer Nate Meekhof

Our Fire Chief Todd Brewer plans to attend the first fire inspection training beginning in October and November in Traverse City as long as there are adequate students to hold the class. We wish him well in his training. He will also be working with our legal department to strengthen the fire code with enforcement measures to ensure all violations and deficiencies are addressed in a timely factor to protect tribal facilities and community members.

New Fire/Rescue Mascot “Animosh” Fire Chief Todd Brewer has a new fire/rescue department mascot and invites tribal youth 12 years of age and under to submit a name for the mascot.

The DV Officer participates in local DV Task Force meetings, GTB Community Coordinated Response (CCR) Team, trainings offered through Women’s Resource Center, enforces Personal Protection Orders issued by the Court, takes charge of dating violence, stalking, sexual assault and domestic violence related incidents and process services as appropriate. GTB Fire/Rescue Department New GTB Fire Chief Appointment – August 17, 2016 the Tribal Council appointed Todd Brewer as the GTB Fire/Rescue Chief. Todd has worked with GTB Fire/Rescue Department since 2013 as a fire prevention and safety officer and most recently as the EMT/Firefighter II. GTB Annual Fire Inspections The GTB Fire/Rescue Department is in the process of completing the annual fire inspections for all tribal buildings for FY2016 to address deficiencies to ensure our buildings meet the NFPA Fire standards for fire safety for our employees and visitors who frequent our buildings. Don’t forget to schedule annual home inspections to update your smoke alarms and fire extinguishers with Fire Chief Todd Brewer (231) 534-7666.

New Grant awarded: Fire Prevention and Safety The GTB Fire/Rescue Department was awarded a twelve-month Fire Prevention and Safety (FPS) Grant EMW-2015-FP-00142 effective 8/29/2016 to 8/28/2017. The FPS Grant goals is to create and adopt building code enforcement and awareness through 1) Code enforcement development and adoption; 2) Contract with local County Fire Inspectors to identify potential hazards in tribal buildings and; 3) Train two GTB staff for certification in Fire Safety Inspections and Code Enforcement.

GTB Emergency Management Office – As we move into the fall season the six GTB tornado shelters located in Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix and Peshawbestown will be inspected and locked for the winter season effective October 1, 2016 to April 1, 2017. In addition, the tornado siren test located at GTB Pow-Wow Grounds will restart on the first Monday of each month from April 1st to October 1st.

June 15, 2016 at the Tribal Council Regular Session the GTB Tribal Council approved the GTB Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan (NHMP). This is the first time GTB has a Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan.

The purpose of the GTB NHMP is to permanently eliminate or reduce long-term risks to people and property from natural hazards so that the Tribal Government assets such as transportation, infrastructure, commerce, and tourism can be sustained and strengthened. This can be accomplished through collaborative efforts/activities amongst departments within the GTB and assistance and expertise of numerous agencies, organizations, and individuals who assisted in the development of the NHM Plan. Without the technical assistance and contributions of time and ideas of these agencies, organizations, and individuals, the GTB-HMP could not have been completed. The GTB NHMP is effective for five years from 6/15/2016 before it is due for renewal. During the TCRS 6/15/2016 the Tribal Council also adopted Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Leelanau and Manistee County NHM Plans.

Tribal Prosecutors Office Matthew Feil is the Tribal Prosecutor and Chief Law Enforcement Officer responsible for the prosecution of criminal offenses. The Tribal Prosecutor serves as the Presenting Officer in the GTB Children’s Court, and represents the Tribe in Indian Child Welfare Cases in Tribal and State Courts. The Tribal Prosecutor Matthew Feil and paralegal Vicki Parzych completed the Full Case software training in Washington DC August 29 to September 1, 2016. GTB Tribal Courts Full Court system and the Prosecutor’s Office Full Case system is a compatible software system to save time to process electronic court cases and documents. The State Courts have been using electronic filing of cases for several years and this new electronic method will increase filings, pleadings and cases efficiently.

COUNCIL COMMUNITY MEETINGS

GTB Members were granted an open meeting with council on several occasions in September. The Tribal Council presented and discussed current affairs of Tribal government and gaming business, upcoming endeavors, and to gathered input from Tribal members.

Light food was provided and door prizes at each location. Council attended meetings in Benzie,Traverse City, and Peshawbestown.

The Charlevoix community meeting has been rescheduled to a later date not yet determined.

GTB members were able to voice their concerns with Council regarding issues like the proposed marina, casino gaming ideas, housing concerns, and the addition of more property for GTB business and its members.

TOM SHOMIN RETURNS

Tom Shomin was voted back into Council on September 22nd at the Tribal Council Regular Session. Since the removal of former councilor Frank Wilson, Council has had an open seat for some time. Plans to fill the vacancy were brought forth in the agenda and after some discussion decided in a vote, at the Council’s discretion.

Despite his term ending just three months ago, Councilor Shomin is still up-to-date and very familiar with the position. He jumped into the Council seat immediately after his swearing in ceremony. This addition completes a full seven member council, which the other Council members have not had for a while. Tom’s previous experience and proven dedication to GTB, makes Councilor Shomin a welcomed addition to the GTB Tribal Council in service to the membership.

TRIBAL COUNCIL EMAILS Exciting new changes have happened on the GTB website! Tribal members can now directly email the Tribal Council their questions, concerns, suggestions, and general inquiries.

Under the GTB member login on the www.gtbindians.org website, Tribal members can login, provide their email address, then type in the communication with Tribal Council. You will receive a receipt of your communication and shortly after receive a response. Tribal Council would like to encourage Tribal members to use this communication tool in advance of the GTB annual membership meeting (10/22/2016), at which time responses to received emails can be provided.

TRIBAL COURT – The Minor Trust Process –

GTB Tribal Court Staff is here to help with everything but we cannot answer legal questions!

After all, we are not actual attorneys. However, if we can help, we are here for you. Do you want to sue someone? We have a civil packet. Do you want to access your minor trust? We have a packet for that too! In general, we have packets for everything and if we don’t, let us know and the Judges will create a packet for your court needs. We are here to serve you! It is important to know what is offered your Tribal Court in order to utilize its services to their full potential. That’s why we are going to start including an article in the newsletter every month to highlight available services. Our hope is for the community to about the court process and to maintain the open-door policy for assistance.

This month we would like to start with the Minor Trust Process. Tribal Member minors (or those who have yet to start receiving distributions) have minor trust accounts with Huntington National Bank. Upon reaching 18 years, the young adult begins to receive the regular biannual per capita payments along with all the other adult Tribal Members.

Petitioner will need to pay a $100.00 filing fee; if you are unable to pay the filing fee, you can complete a second petition requesting the Tribal Court to waive the filing fee. Once the filing fee is paid (or waived by the Judge), the Tribal Court Clerk will take all the documents you submitted and create a case number and schedule a hearing.

The hearing is usually set out 10 business days but if emergency situation exists, we may be able to schedule a hearing earlier depending on the Tribal Court docket. After the hearing is scheduled, a Notice of Hearing parties (the minor, parents and the GTB Legal Department - if the Petitioner is over 18, the parents will not be noticed). The GTB Legal Department is noticed because they speak on behalf of the Tribal Council and ensure the amount requested and reasons for the request (health, education and welfare) are within the scope of the GTB Code, Tribal Court Rules and various memorandums.

The actual hearing to access the minor trust account be as short as 15 minutes or as long as 1 hour. BENZIE POWWOW

The GTB satellite office in Benzonia hosted their annual powwow on Saturday September 10th.

The Powwow was a lively yet quaint gathering.

The weather mirrored the inclement weather that was present during the GTB 2016 Annual Powwow. Members also were given a chance to fill out the GTB community survey while they waited for the event to begin. After the prayer a large feast was provided by volunteer staff.

The drum that was scheduled to attend was not able to arrive due to an illness. After some time, members rounded up a drum and some volunteer drummers on the spot to fill in, ensuring the ceremony’s continuation.

NRD FEAST AND GATHERING The Natural Resources Department hosted their annual Feast and Gathering on Saturday September 17th. The event was located at the Arthur Duhamel Marina, and drew in a large crowd. Cars lined the driveway into the marina due to the sheer amount of activities present.

The Feast and Gathering had adult and youth archery compitition, sling shot paint ball shoot, and of course, fishing. NRD released about 650 brook trout into the blocked off marina. Those that were caught were cleaned and fried up on the spot.

This event was again MC’d by Tribal Councilor Mark Wilson. Councilor Wilson announced the raffle ticket numbers for prize winners. There were over $2000 worth of prizes. The larger prizes were awarded to the highest scoring participants in each event.

The grand finale was the delicious feast cooked by none other than Tanya Rapheal and assisted

by JoAnne Cook. T-shirts were also available featuring a wild rice focused logo designed by Lydia Burfield. The NRD has also recently planted over 11,000 pounds of Minoomin, and had some for demonstration at he event.

Recently Eyaawing was donated a large wigwam. This wigwam was located in Northport at the “Fairy House” which was an art center for children. Eyaawing has added this object to our exhibits and will help us to show how life in the area was approximately 400 years ago.
