Back to School Preparedness
As the school year resumes, even though we are in a pandemic, we still need to prepare kids to return to school. FEMA provides resources for families to develop emergency plans. Go to Ready. gov to access templates and educational materials to open communication with your family to have preparedness plans for any type of emergency.

Some simple steps to get you started on a Family Communication Plan: 1. Sign up for Alerts and Warnings 2. Make a Plan 3. Practice Emergency Drills 4. Know Evacuation Routes 5. Secure important documents, etc.
Please visit www.Ready.gov to access all these resources on emergency preparedness and know school emergency plans, childcare facilities, after-school programs, evacuation routes, social media and contact information, etc.
Watch a 4-minute video “It Started Like Any Other Day, about families who experienced disaster and learn what to do to help you prepare. www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_omgt3MEBs . Click the lower right to turn on the video. Create #BacktoSchool Family Emergency Communication Plan

Add school social media and contact info to your family communication plan. • Update school records and discuss emergency contact numbers with kids before they go: https://www.fema.gov/ media-library/assets/documents/34330 • Get the kids involved in building their own emergency kit: ready.gov/kids/build-a-kit Center for Disease Control has resources for keeping kids safe when they go #BackToSchool. Tornado Awareness
Tornadoes can strike at any time and northern lower Michigan tornadoes have happened. Be aware of the signs of a Tornado and be ready to take shelter to keep you and your family safe. The Grand Traverse Band Tornado shelters will be closing October 1, 2020 for the season so have plans to seek shelter if storms occur at any moment. FEMA provides up to date information on preparedness. The article below can be found on: https://www.ready.gov/tornadoes or How to Prepare for a Tornado to plan and take action to keep you safe.
Tornado Preparedness
Earlier this month, hundreds of thousands of households across the Midwest remained without electricity, days after a serious windstorm that hit the Midwest and devastated parts of the power grid. According to the National Weather Service, the derecho produced seven tornadoes in the Chicago metropolitan area, including an EF-1 tornado with 110 mph winds. The weather service also confirmed two tornadoes in southern Wisconsin and two in northern Indiana, including an EF-1.
About 1,200 tornadoes hit the United States every year and everyone in the Midwest is at risk of experiencing a tornado warning. Tornadoes are violently rotating columns of air that extend from a thunderstorm to the ground. They can destroy buildings, flip cars, and create deadly flying debris.
Tornadoes can: • Happen anytime and anywhere; • Bring intense winds, over 200 MPH; and • Look like funnels

THE ONLY THING SCARY ABOUT HALLOWEEN SHOULD BE THE COSTUMES
The way we STAY SAE ! celebrate Halloween in Michigan will be different this year due to COVID 19. There are still many ways to celebrate safely. Here are some tips to help Michiganders stay safe this year.
Make sure to also check on and follow guidance or regulations released by the local health department.

HOMEOWNERS Do not hand out candy if you are sick. Wear a face mask covering BOTH your mouth and nose. Use duct tape to mark 6 foot lines in front of your home and leading to driveway/front door. Position a distribution table between yourself and trick or treaters. Distribute candy on disinfected table to eliminate direct contact. Wash hands often. Consider handing out candy in an open space where distancing is possible, rather than from the front door. Consider a neighborhood costume parade, it is an easy way to keep safe space between children. HERE ARE SOME IDEAS FOR SAFE HAOEE AHERI S : Consider refraining from Halloween gatherings this year or use an online meeting platform to have a virtual party instead. If you choose to have a gathering: Only have a few people over to limit the possibility of crowding. Indoor gatherings over 10 people are prohibited by EO 2020 176. Have all food and party favors set out individually to prevent cross contamination. (Avoid buffet style or shared food and drinks.) Make sure there are plenty of areas with hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol. Stay 6 feet away from others. Wear a fun face mask, instead of a costume mask.

PARENTS AND TRICK - OR - TREATERS Share with your children that this year may be different than last, but let them know some of the new ways you plan to celebrate and still have lots of fun. Stay home if sick. Talk with your children about safety and social distancing guidelines and expectations. Keep a 6 foot distance from others not in your family group. Trick or treat with the people you live with. Participate in one way trick or treating and guide children to stay to the right to ensure social distancing. Avoid congregating in groups around houses. Carry a flashlight at night and ensure your children have reflective clothing. Wear a face mask covering BOTH your mouth and nose A costume mask (such as for Halloween) is not a substitute for a cloth mask. Do not wear a costume mask over a protective cloth mask if wearing both causes difficulty breathing. Instead, consider using a Halloween themed cloth mask. Only go to houses with safety measures in place. Inspect candy. Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use sanitizer containing at least 60 percent alcohol, especially before eating or after coughing/sneezing, and as soon as you return home. Check out halloween2020.org to find exciting activities and ways to celebrate Halloween this year based on levels of COVID risks in your area.

Halloween Activities From the Fire Chief Winter Is Among Us Halloween Activities Winter Is Among Us Fire Prevention Week 2020
Wow, what a year! I started with GTB Fire Rescue a little over a year ago and have been serving as your Fire Chief for the past nine months. Pandemic, social distancing, COVID, mask, among a whole list of other words I never thought I would be using daily.

Several GTB Tribal departments have been instrumental in planning this endeavor including Tribal Administration, Health Department, Emergency Management, Office of Management and Budget, Office of Program Development and Evaluation, Facilities Management and the Tribal Architect. All these departments and individuals provided input in the program design, and the proposed plan represents the consensus for the common good of the Grand Traverse Band. All parties will continue to be involved in the Project through the design, construction, and implementation phases of the Project. The Project will be completed over a twelve-month period.
We appreciate the ICDBG CARES Grant award number 20BV2625480 to provide generators to the tribal facilities. The Generator Project will enhance assistance to community members in crisis in the preparation, prevention, and response to the COVID-19 pandemic to protect its vulnerable population and critical assets to preserve life and safety. *****************
