Aanii Boozhoo! Hello and greetings to Nimebine-giizis (May), Niizhing mdaaswaak-shi-niizhtana-shi-niizh nsa-biboongad (2022). Gekpii gii-mino-kami (It’s finally spring)! I hope everyone is enjoying Spring 2022 – I’m looking forward to the upcoming summer months!

Maamwigaabwidaa (Let’s Stand Together) Anishinaabemowin Teg’s 28th Annual Conference was held via Zoom from March 31 – April 2, 2022. The keynote speaker at the language conference was Dr. Anton Treuer, who is a professor of Ojibwe at Bemidji State University and an author of 18 books. Presenters included Dr. Alan Corbiere; Dr. Shirley Williams; Helen Roy-Fuhst; Barbara Nolan; Patricia Ningewance; Dr. Mary Ann Corbiere; Ninaatig Staats-Pangowish; Martina Osawamick; Yvette Pitawanakwat; Dr. Anton Treuer; Jacob Wemigwans; Rochelle Allan; Edwin Taylor/ Rita Sands; Brian Peltier; and Velma Assiniwe. Various aspects of our language and culture were the focus of this event. This was an awesome conference full of learning and laughter and the sharing of our language and its cultural teachings. Hopefully next year this annual conference will be returning to an on-site conference event.

Ma'iingan and the Anishinaabeg is the title of a current and ongoing project that is sharing the teachings of ma’iingan’s interconnectedness with our Anishinaabe people. Hopefully it will bring awareness to those that support the atrocities of wolf hunts, inasmuch as it is also a tool to teach our youth so that they may understand the sacredness of our connection to wildlife and the environment. It will be 42 years since our official date of Federal Recognition and, in looking back at our tribal history, there were three attempts by GTB for seeking federal recognition: Ben Peshawbe petition in 1934 (the same year the Indian Reorganization Act was passed); Casper Ance petition in 1943; and the final, successful petition Dodie Chambers, et al., submitted in 1978. The story of the 1978 petition follows: On May 19, 1978, Leelanau Indians, Inc., represented by Michigan Indian Legal Services, formally petitioned the federal government for federal recognition on behalf of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, the fourth tribal group nationwide to begin the Federal Acknowledgment Process (FAP). Ardith (Dodie) Chambers, the chair of Leelanau Indians, Inc., drove with three others all night to Washington, D.C., to deliver the petition to the Department of the Interior, only to be turned back at the lobby. On October 18, 1979, the Bureau of Indian Affairs published a notice in the Federal Register indicating its preliminary determination that the Grand Traverse Band should be federally recognized. On May 27, 1980, the Grand Traverse Band officially became the first petitioner to earn federal recognition under the FAP… (Fletcher, Matthew L.M. (2012). Below is the actual language posted in the Federal Register on March 25, 1980: This notice is published in the exercise of authority delegated by the Secretary of the Interior to the Assistant Secretary-Indian Affairs by 209 DM 8.

Pursuant to 25 CFR 54.9(h) notice is hereby given that the Assistant Secretary acknowledges that the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, c/o Miss Ardith Harris, Post Office GTB NEWS 2

May 2022 Wawaaskoni Giizis (Blossom Flower Moon) Box 37, Suttons Bay, Michigan 49682, exists as an Indian tribe. This notice is based on a determination that the group satisfied the criteria set forth in 25 CFR 54.7.

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians is the modern successor of several bands of Ottawas and Chippewas which have a documented continuous existence in the Grand Traverse Bay area of Michigan since as early as 1675. Evidence indicates these bands, and the subsequent combined band, have existed autonomously since first contact, with a series of leaders who represented the band in its dealings with outside organizations, and who both responded to and influenced the band in matters of importance. The membership is unquestionably Indian, of Ottawa and Chippewa descent. No evidence was found that the members of the band are members of any other Indian tribes, or that the band of its members have been terminated or forbidden the Federal relationship by an Act of Congress.

Proposed findings that the band exists as an Indian tribe were published on page 60171 of the Federal Register of October 18, 1979.

Interested parties were given 120 days in which to submit factual or legal arguments to rebut evidence used to support the findings that the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians exists as an Indian tribe. The 120-day comment period ended February 16…

This determination shall become effective May 27, 1980 unless the Secretary of the Interior requests the determination be reconsidered pursuant to 25 CFR 54.10.

It was a 46-year journey to federal recognition, and another 8 years for development and approval of the GTB Constitution, for a total of 54 years to establish a federally recognized tribal government, having a government-to-government relationship with the United States, with inherent rights of self-government through tribal sovereignty. Many Miigwetches to everyone’s hard work throughout the process, from our tribal members to Leelanau Indians Inc. to Michigan Indian Legal Services attorneys, and especially to our ancestors.

I would like to note that it was also on May 27th, 186 years ago, that the Treaty of 1836, also known as the Treaty of Washington, was proclaimed.

With that treaty, Michigan became a state in 1837, while hunting and fishing rights were retained by tribes in the bordering waters and ceded territory (2/3 of Michigan).

Below is a map of the 1836 Treaty’s ceded territory: Memorial Day is on Nsimdina nsagwon-gizi (the 30th day) of Nimebine-giizis (May), Niizhing mdaaswaak-shi-niizhtana-shi-niizh nsa-biboongad (2022), an annual remembrance of those who lost their lives fighting for the freedoms we enjoy today, lest we ever forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Poppies – worn not only on Memorial Day but also on Veterans Day – are symbols of loss of life and also of recovery and a renewal of life for those who survived. Others may also visit cemeteries to clean and decorate the graves of those we’ve lost. A national moment of remembrance will be held at 3:00pm local time, to take our hats off, remember and pray.

Free Financial Coaching Available to Tribal Citizens

Since June 2020, with grant support from the Wells Fargo Foundation, the Oklahoma Native Assets Coalition, Inc. (ONAC) has been offering three types of free financial coaching to tribal citizens across the United States: 1) credit counseling, 2) homebuyer education, and 3) financial management (i.e. budgeting).

May 4, 2022 & June 10, 2022 From 9am - 4pm Michigan Indian Legal Services is offering remote estate planning.

Confidential sessions are offered one-on-one, by teleconference (Zoom) or phone call, with a certified credit counselor, homebuyer education provider, and financial educator, Felecia Freeman (Citizen Potawatomi). Typically, these sessions will last for an hour and are scheduled at a mutually agreeable time.

WILLS, POWERS OF ATTORNEY, PATIENT ADVOCATE DESIGNATIONS, FUNERAL REPRESENTATIVES, AND LADY BIRD DEEDS.

MILS is offering digital estate planning clinics on Wednesday, 5/4/22 and Friday, 6/10/2022 to make creating your estate plan as safe and convenient as possible. These documents can be signed and executed from the comfort of your own home. This Program is open to Tribal Members, Employees, and their family. The guidelines of this program will allow us to cater to a broader group than is typically permitted by MILS’ funders.

Thus far, ONAC has offered this free financial coaching to those participating in ONAC’s other programming. Now, ONAC is offering these financial coaching services to a wider group of tribal constituents.

This Program is available to those who make up to 500% of the poverty and eligibility guidelines. The threshold starts at $67,950 and is increased by $23,600 for each additional household member. “You will likely qualify, even if you

did not qualify before for other services.”

Additionally, we are open and still offering our services statewide to income-eligible individuals and tribes, advocates for the rights of individuals, which advances systems of justice, and works to preserve Indian families through State and Tribal Courts.

ARP Supplement Rental Assistance This a short-term supplemental Rental Assistance Program through the American Rescue Plan that provides rent subsidies for income qualified working families, Elders and disabled Tribal members. This is a tenant-based program where the tenant is subsidized not the rental unit. The family must find their own housing. This allows the family to select a rental unit that meets their needs and the program requirements.

A. To be eligible for rental assistance, applicants must meet all of the below conditions: 1. Be an enrolled Tribal member of the Grand Traverse Band or have GTB enrolled dependents residing in the home; 2. Be eighteen (18) years of age or older; 3. Reside in one (1) of the following counties: Leelanau, Grand Traverse, Antrim, Charlevoix, Benzie, or Manistee; 4. Qualify as a low income family, defined as a family whose income does not exceed 80% of the median income, as published annually by Office of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); 5. Live in a space that requires rental payment; 6. Not receiving assistance through the Emergency Rental Assistance Funds through the US Department of Treasury program;

NAHASDA Rental Subsidy Assistance *Please note the differences in the programs* Eligibility for Rental Subsidy Assistance A. To be eligible for rental assistance, applicants must meet all of the below conditions: 1. Be an enrolled Tribal member of the Grand Traverse Band; 2. Be eighteen (18) years of age or older; 3. Reside in one (1) of the following counties: Leelanau, Grand Traverse, Antrim, Charlevoix, Benzie, or Manistee; 4. Qualify as a low-income family, defined as a family whose income does not exceed 80% of the median income, as published annually by Office of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); 5. Live in a space that requires rental payment. For example; apartment, mobile home park, town house, etc. Rental assistance will not be offered for assistance with mortgage payments, lot rent (of participant owned/mortgaged home) or when renting an individual room; 6. Not be delinquent on their rent at the time assistance is offered; B. The applicant is eligible to receive up to $250.00 per month for rental assistance.

C. Rental assistance may be provided for a maximum of six months in a two-year period.

D. Applicants who receive benefits and become ineligible due to receiving the maximum six months of benefits are eligible to reapply two (2) years after date of initial application.

E. An applicant may not receive rental assistance while receiving the benefit of any other form of housing subsidy for the same dwelling unit. (with the exception of the ARP supplemental assistance) F. Applicants that owe monies to the Grand Traverse Band Housing Department are not eligible for Rental Subsidy Assistance until the balance is paid in full.

B. The applicant is eligible to receive up to $250.00 per month for rental assistance.

C. Rental assistance may be provided for a maximum of six months.

D. Applicants must be received no later than 9/30/2022.

ELDERS SPOTLIGHT

Alvina Napont was born and raised on Beaver Island. In her young years she never knew there was a mainland, as everything she knew was on the Island. She bonded with the other native families of the Island with friendships lasting still now. As children they found things to do, making up games to keep busy. They would climb up shed roofs to jump off, play kick the can and throw the bottle over the roof. Another favorite past time was riding the cows. They made mud pies and played with rag dolls made of old socks. Many hours were spent at the beach during the hot summer months. The “Big Tree” was a favorite hangout area where they would play hide and seek or tag. After using a scrub board to clean their laundry, it was hung on the line to dry. In the winter what fun they had getting buried in snow by the snowplow as it drove by their fenced yard. The only girl with a pair of ice skates was willing to let everyone have a turn wearing them to skate across the frozen lake ice of Paradise Bay in town.

From their home, they had their slue of paths to walk to town or friends and relative homes through the tall grasses and bushes, some of those shortcuts still exist today. During weekends the town kids would sit on the Shamrock front porch steps while listening to the music inside. At the Town Hall on Saturday nights a movie would often play, like “Hop Along Cassidy”. Sunday mornings Lloyd and Eva McDonough would pick them up to haul them to church. A big Sunday meal would follow. Fish and rabbit were often eaten at mealtime. Her father was a fisherman during the summer fishing on “The Stella”. He made sure they were never hungry or cold. They burned wood to keep warm, and a lantern for light. Going out to the outhouse was normal daily life.

Between September and May she attend school in Harbor Springs.

Although bilingual only English was used at school. Everyone had a number, assigned seats, and ate what was on their plate, or faced the consequences. Treats were far and few. Between school and her seamstress mother she learned how to sew quite well. Over the years she has sewn many outfits for those she loves. Each one of her grandchildren received one of grandma’s homemade blankets.

With her 6 children giving her 10 grandchildren who gave her 18 greatgrandchildren and a step granddaughter, that’s a lot of blankets.

Another of her sewing specialties are the numerous dresses and ribbon shirts she has made her loved ones.

She smiles as she recalls a recent phone call. Her youngest, baby Olivia, said hi grandma just as plain as day. She states how wonderful it is to watch her family grow. There are only 3 Cornstalk girls left of the 12 siblings. Proudly she says she has had a good life so far with many great memories. She is looking forward to the family reunion they have planned for this summer. She is excited to see all the family together and have time to chat with each of them.

Ruth Ann Bailey Bussey was born in Peshawbestown on September 26, 1944 to Josephine and Raymond Bailey. She graduated from Suttons Bay High School in 1962 and after two years of college on December 30, 1964, she married John Bussey and they moved to Grand Rapids Michigan. She became a stay-at-home Mom to raise the first three of her children. The Ruth and John Bussey family stayed in Grand Rapids for 16 years but kept in touch of what was happening in Peshawbestown during that time. In late 1970's the department of Social Services was administering the Tribal lots and decided that to qualify for a lot you had to be poor because that was their definition of being Indian. As a result, it was beginning to look like Indian lots might be going to non-Indians. The elders of the community asked young people who had moved away for employment to consider moving back to Peshawbestown to fight to keep the land in Indian hands. During the 1970's Ruth and her husband had homesteaded a lot and visited it almost every weekend and cleared the land and put a travel trailer on the lot in hopes of building one day. They fought social services and won and were able to keep the land. They were issued a 99 year lease by the County of Leelanau. They were asked to move back by the elders and in 1980 they left their employment in Grand Rapids and returned to Peshawbestown, put a mobile home on their homesteaded lot and became members of the community. They immediately became part of the movement for Federal Recognition. Creating jobs to allow people to stay and live in the community. Once Federal Recognition was achieved Ruth was asked to take the role of Health Director because of her college experience in the medical field. John was asked to become the Manpower Director and manage the CETA program based on his years of business management experience.

Dodie Harris Chambers who was, the first Tribal Chair left that position to take over the housing program and Buddy Raphael took over as Tribal Chairman. In those early days, money was tight, and staff were often asked to take on additional positions, Ruth was asked to be on the Housing Board and to assist that program. She was also asked to assist in grant writing for the Health Program and other programs. In the early years grant writing was very important to keep staff employed in a variety of positions. Over the next few years, the GTB developed what was considered the best Tribal management team in the country and the GTB became highly recognized in Washington D.C. which helped the Tribe secure Grants and contracts from the federal government and private foundations as well.

This strength of governance of programs and grants paved tlfe way for the Tribe to become a Self-Governance Tribe both in BIA grants and contracts and Indian Health Service grants and contracts. Ruth as Health Director played a pivotal role in this and was noted as a very good negotiator on behalf of the Tribe for Indian Health Services Annual Negotiations.

Aanii Missy! Our Elder Highlight for Antrim County is Melissa Alberts from Kewadin, MI. So, without divulging her age, we’ll just say she is still a baby (maybe toddler) elder!

Missy is the daughter of Wilmer and Florine (Anderson) Alberts Sr. Her paternal grandparents were Whitney (“Chief Blue Cloud”) and Beatrice (Nahgahgwon) Alberts.

Her maternal grandparents were Percy and Louisa (Williams) Anderson Sr. Melissa was blessed with four older siblings: Theresa Shananaquet, Michael Shananaquet, Martin Shananaquet, and Mary (Alberts) Pelcher; and two younger sibs- Patricia (Alberts) Poertner, and WilmerAlberts Jr. Today she has three beautiful daughters, Holly, Rosey, and Zeegwan. She also has four grands: Samuel, Gerald, Robert and sweet Ophileah! Missy says, ... “they are my heart! <3 “ Melissa was born and raised in Elk Rapids, MI but journeyed between Elk Rapids and Mikado, MI. Mikado was a second home to her; it was where she learned to pound black ash, weave baskets, that potatoes are good for any meal, run barefoot, ride horses, and pick wild strawberries. So, so many things! She, along with her brothers, sisters would stay with their Grandma Beatrice on holidays and summers; and those times are where some of her very best memories come from!

Her hobbies and interest involve rescuing Black Ash baskets, stopping at yard sales and playing Euchre, Cribbage and Scrabble.

She loves watching football and basketball games and supporting our Native youth in their games! She is a Tiger fan for life! Did I mention she loves to hang with family and laughing with sisters!

She has worked for the tribe for many, many years. She is an alumnus from NMC, FSU and GVSU. She has degrees in Business Admin and Computer Applications. She loves being outdoors or in the water, trekking through the woods and neighborhood or just being with family! She says, summer is almost upon us, so Baamaa-pii, see you at the Indian Beach in Kewadin!

Dora Eastman grew up in Detroit downriver (Lincoln Park Southgate area). She has been living in the Ptown area for the last 3 years and loves it up here. Has 3 children but lost 2 boys. Still has a daughter. Her mothers name was Bertha Paul. She lived in Ptown and moved to Detroit. Her Grandmother’s name was Pauline Paul. She has a brother name Manuel Reyes. She also has a sister name Maria Harper. Was a waitress for 30 years.

Harriet Marez was her best friend.

Lavern Scott, an accomplished pool player not only learns to make a clean shot, but to set up his next shot. Lavern Scott, an Grand Traverse Band Elder. occasional tournament pool player, crafted together his life like a well played game of eight ball.

His best shot: He married his sweetheart Vada (Sissy) Scott-now going on forty years! They had two wonderful daughters, Rachel King and Heather Lutz. This bought them four grandchildren: Alivia Lutz, Benjamin Lutz, Nichola King and Brady Gannon.

He provided for his family by working at Tower Automotive, manufacturing auto parts, and also working with friends on various side jobs.

Lavern has enjoyed the Grand Traverse area, he relates that he never really ventured too far away from here ... "I have everything and everyone I ever wanted right here" . He relishes the open areas and opportunities for hunting and fishing. He feels that by spending time with the grandchildren and passing on our traditions by showing them (not just telling) and making time for them (by doing things together) creates our family and cultural spirit, Of course, Lavern still finds time for a game of pool and as any real pool player knows that he never relies on a lucky shot. It is the acquired craft, careful ability to plan and temperament that has made all the difference in his game and in the Elder his family treasures!

2. Know where your electrical shut off is to reduce house fires.

3. Make an emergency communication plan for your family on where to go, what to do and how to reconnect.

4. Make sure you have insurance to cover cost of any repairs.

5. Make a pet emergency plan and know what shelters will take pets as most shelters cannot accept pets, except service animals.

6. Know your evacuation routes in your community.

Depending on where you are, and the impact and the warning time of flooding, go to the safe location that you have identified.

Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts.

If told to evacuate, do so immediately. Never drive around barricades. Local responders use them to safely direct traffic out of flooded areas.

Be aware that snakes and other animals may be in your house. Wear heavy gloves and boots during clean up.

Listen to EAS, NOAA Weather Radio, or local alerting systems for current emergency information and instructions.

Avoid wading in floodwater, which can contain dangerous debris and be contaminated. Underground or downed power lines can also electrically charge the water.

If flash flooding is a risk in your location, monitor potential signs such as heavy rain.

Learn and practice evacuation routes, shelter plans, and flash flood response.

Gather supplies in case you have to leave immediately or if services are cut off. Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication.

Don’t forget the needs of pets.

Obtain extra batteries and charging devices for phones and other critical equipment.

Obtain flood insurance. Homeowner’s policies do not cover flooding. Get flood coverage under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Keep important documents in a waterproof container. Create password-protected digital copies.

Protect your property. Move valued items to higher levels. Declutter drains and gutters. Install check valves.

Consider a sump pump with a battery.

Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters. Turn Around. Don’t Drown.® Just six inches of fastmoving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.

Stay off of bridges over fast-moving water. Fast-moving water can wash bridges away without warning.

Avoid driving, except in emergencies.

Use a generator or other gasolinepowered machinery ONLY outdoors and away from windows.

Be aware of the risk of electrocution.

Do not touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water. If it is safe to do so, turn off the electricity to prevent electric shock.

If your vehicle is trapped in rapidly moving water, stay inside. If water is rising inside the vehicle, seek refuge on the roof.

If trapped in a building, go to its highest level. Do not climb into a closed attic. You may become trapped by rising floodwater. Go on the roof only if necessary. Signal for help.

Grand Traverse Band Tornado Shelters Open 2022 Spring and Summer Season Each tornado shelter will be unlocked from April 1st to October 1st for the spring and summer months. GTB Fire Deparment will lock the shelters each year for the winter season.

Don't Let Your World Go Up in Smoke.

If you live in an apartment or condominium you need to know how to get out quickly if a fire starts. Follow these steps to stay safe.

{ Don’t prop open exit or stairway doors. These are installed to slow the spread of heat and smoke if there is a fire. { Speak to your apartment manager if you see a damaged smoke alarm, fire extinguisher or an emergency light that has burned out.

In the event of a fire, stay calm. Move to the exit as you have practiced. Call the fire department once you are outside.

Make sure your apartment has working smoke alarms.

Have a smoke alarm inside each sleeping room. Test them every month. Replace the batteries every year. Tell your apartment manager if you think there is a problem with one of your smoke alarms.

Be Prepared Create an escape plan. Discuss how you will get outside. Practice your plan. { Count the number of doors there are between your apartment and the nearest fire exit.

Memorize the number in case you have to find the exit in the dark. { Know where all the exit doors and stairs are on your floor. { Learn your building evacuation plan if you have one. Create and practice an escape plan for your own apartment.

{ If your door feels warm to the touch, do not attempt to open it. FIREFIGHTER BADGE PINNING CEREMONY On Wednesday, April 20th, families gathered at the Tribal Council Chambers to witness the badge pinning of the two newest firefighters to join the GTB Fire and Rescue Department, Jordan Anderson and M’Konz John. Fire Chief, Garrett Fairchild, had the honor of swearing in these two into service while Anderson and John nobly recited the Firefighter’s Oath. To receive these badges, both men had to prepare for months to be tested on their knowledge of fire operations and pass hands-on and written tests. Each Firefighter selected a special family member to pin the badge to their uniforms and afterwards, Lakota Raphael, from GTB Conservation Department, sang to celebrate these men’s bravery in their field.

Each year, the National Weather Service in Gaylord presents Weather Spotter Classes across northern Michigan. The presentations are free, open to the public, and usually last about 1 1/2 hours. There is no need to pre-register for the classes. The training provides details on things such as tornado development, thunderstorm hazards, severe weather safety, things that may fool you, and how to make a complete report to the National Weather Service.

2015 was the costliest severe weather season ever recorded across northern Michigan. Tens of millions of dollars in damage occurred when severe thunderstorms raced across parts of the area in August with 100 mph winds and softball size hail. Clean up from these powerful thunderstorms took nearly two years, lasting until 2017. Spotters played a pivotal role in helping the National Weather Service warn for these dangerous storms.

The GTB Health Department has administered 5,223 doses as of April 14, 2022:

63% of GTB Tribal members in the 6-county service area age 12 and over have received at least 1 shot.

82% of GTB Elders in the 6-county service area have received at least 1 shot.

19% of GTB Tribal members in the 6-county service age 5-11 have received at least 1 shot.

64% of eligible GTB Elders in the 6-county service area have received a 1st booster dose.

24% of eligible GTB Elders in the 6-county service area have received a 2nd booster dose.

We continue to offer vaccinations through clinics on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Medicine Lodge, Benzie, Charlevoix, Traverse City offices as well as Turtle Creek. Please call the COVID-19 Vaccination Line (231-534-7475) if you would like to schedule a vaccination or for any questions.

Currently, adults age 50+ can choose to receive a 2nd booster at least 4 months after their 1st booster. *CDC Nowcasting data estimates that 85.9% of specimens now sequenced in the U.S. are BA.2. In Michigan, over 50% of specimens sequenced are now BA.2. Case rates in Michigan are showing an increase with projections suggesting a coming increase. *According to MDHHS data, unvaccinated people aged 12 and over in Michigan had 2.9 times the risk of testing positive for COVID-19 in February compared to people up-to-date on their vaccination. In January, unvaccinated people aged 12 and over in Michigan had 25 times the risk of dying. * You are protected best when you stay up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations. This means, you have received all recommended doses in the primary series and booster shots when eligible. Vaccination is still the best tool we have to moderate the impact of COVID-19. Vaccines continue to protect us from severe disease. Booster doses have been further shown to strengthen and broaden protection against Omicron and other variants. Everyone should get vaccinated and get your booster dose, as soon as you are eligible.

COVID-19 testing & at-home COVID-19 test kits continue to be available at the GTB Health Department for FREE. Please call 231-534-7200 to schedule a test or make a request for a COVID-19 test kit. Testing currently occurs Monday through Friday

GTB Family Health Clinic we offer a number of treatments for COVID-19 including Evusheld, which is indicated for pre-exposure prophylaxis against COVID-19.

What this means is that Evusheld is given before an individual might be exposed to COVID-19 and is meant to prevent infection and progression to severe illness. Evusheld is a monoclonal antibody treatment indicated for patients who are considered moderately to severely immunocompromised. It is given as two injections and patients are monitored for an hour following treatment. In addition to COVID-19 vaccination, Evusheld is another way that we can protect the GTB community.

Other treatments we currently stock include the oral antiviral (Paxlovid) and monoclonal antibody treatments.

Assistance with inpatient residential treatment referrals for substance use disorder and developing aftercare plans for sober support to individuals returning to their communities.

Contracted psychiatrist one day per week who provides psychiatric evaluations and medication management for adult tribal members and assists with our licensed therapist for the appropriate referrals for children under 15.

A behavioral health therapist’s role is to provide assessment and ongoing outpatient counseling to Tribal Members wishing to make life changes. **

**As BHS has limited availability for licensed therapy at this time, support staff is available to assist with referrals to outside providers in the six-county area.

The elk herd in Michigan is located in the tip of the mitt of the northern lower peninsula region. They reside in small groups scattered among private and public land. In the past, some Tribal hunters have been fortunate to harvest Elk near a road for an easier haul out, while others have gotten elk and needed a group of friends and family to drag it out. Every hunt is different. Plan on the elk weighing over 400 lbs.

The questions below are for Natural Resources Department data collection. You will not be excluded from a tag based on your answers. Answer all questions to the best of your knowledge and leave any notes at the bottom.

AGGRICULTURAL & FOOD SOVEREIGNTY 2022 GTB MAPLE SUGAR SHACK Through March the GTB Sugar Bush was hosted at the Natural Resource Department Office property. Groups of GTB Youth Services, Suttons Bay Public School groups, and GTB citizens stopped in to celebrate the beginning of the Sugar Bush Season.

Tribal Elder Jerry Luskey put down Asema (tobacco) and said a prayer to commence the sugar bush season in a good way.

With a late start to the warmer weather of spring, much of the sap was not collected until April. Maple syrup is bottled for community give-away at community events, and also is planning to be sold at Eagletown Gas Station. Working with Leanne and the Strongheart Center crew, we are planning to have the maple syrup bottled in a Commercial Kitchen setting for the 1st time, allowing GTB to sell product made here in Peshawbestown!

Keep your eye out for maple syrup for sale at Eagletown starting in May.

VEGETABLE PLANT GIVE-AWAY We are planning on having veggie plants to offer the GTB community this spring starting in May. In years past the Agriculture & Food Sovereignty Dept has offered plants to community members to help incentivize people growing their own food at home.

GTB Agricultural staff will be at the Pow Wow Ground/Cultural Building Pavilion

May 19th & 25th 4:00pm – 6:00pm FREE vegetable plants.

Plants available to community members include tomato, pepper, hot pepper, basil, squash, broccoli, kale, and more! GTB Citizens and GTB Employees can participate in the give-away. Attendance will be tracked using sign-up sheets and will be shared each month with the Agricultural Coordinator."

This information is a snapshot of the quality of the water that we provided to you in 2021. Included are details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and state standards.

Vulnerability of sub-populations: Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune systems disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from them health care providers. U.S. EPA/Center for Disease Control guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, the U.S. EPA prescribes regulations that limit the levels of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. Food and Drug Administration regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which provide the same protection for public health.

Sources of drinking water: The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells.

Water Quality Data The table below lists all the drinking water contaminants that we detected during the 2021 calendar year.

The presence of these contaminants in the water does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. Unless otherwise noted, the data presented in this table is from testing done January 1 – December 31, 2021. The EPA allows us to monitor for certain contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these contaminants are not expected to vary significantly from year to year.

All the data is representative of the water quality, but some are more than one year old .

Parts per million (ppm) or milligrams per liter (mg/l): one part per million corresponds to one minute in two years or a single penny in $10,000.

Parts per Billion (ppb) or Micrograms per liter (ug/l): one part per billion corresponds to one minute in 2000 years, or a single penny in $10,000,000.

Picocuries per liter (pCi/L): Picocuries per liter is a measure of the radioactivity in water.

Millirems per year (mrem/yr): measure of radiation absorbed by the body.

Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety.

Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water.

MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible using the best available treatment technology.

Treatment Technique (TT): A required process intended to reduce the level of a contaminant in drinking water.

Action Level (AL): The concentration of a contaminant which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements that a water system must follow.

Level 1 Assessment: A study of the water supply to identify potential problems and determine (if possible) why total coliform bacteria have been found in our water system.

Level 2 Assessment: A very detailed study of the water system to identify potential problems and determine (if possible) why an E. coli MCL violation has occurred and/or why total coliform bacteria have been found in our water system on multiple occasions.

Information about lead: If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. GTB Department of Public Works is responsible for providing high quality drinking water but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Monitoring and Reporting to the EPA Requirements: The U.S. EPA require us to test our water on a regular basis to ensure its safety. We met all the monitoring and reporting requirements for 2021. We will update this report annually and will keep you informed of any problems that may occur throughout the year, as they happen. Copies are available in the GTB Newsletter. Strong work ethic and selfmotivated to learn more. 10 years’ experience in project management for Division 9 Trades and construction estimating. Experience with project schedule development Working knowledge of the software: Microsoft Office Productivity Suite & Microsoft Windows operating systems Vehicle for transportation, travel will be required. A Valid Driver’s License. Must be insurable with GTED insurance carrier.

-$55,000 - $65,000, annually.

Wages commensurate with experience.

Project Estimator/Project Manager (Traverse City) (FT) Prior work experience on

45-Day Posting Compensation Committee Vacancies (2) committee vacancies: (1) appointment to be filled by the Tribal Council for a 2-year term; and (1) appointment to be filled by the Compensation Committee for a 3-year term.
