National Women’s History Month. The theme for Women's History Month 2022 is “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” This theme recognizes the many ways in which women have provided healing and hope to humanity for countless generations. It’s been one year since Hon.Deb Haaland’s confirmation as Secretary of the Interior, and the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet Secretary. I continue to support her endeavors as Secretary of the Interior and in her work that, by all accounts, provides healing and promotes hope across Indian Country.

Daylight Savings Time. Daylight Savings Time begins the second Sunday in March and ends the first Sunday in November – in 2022 it begins March 13th and will end on November 6th. One way to look at it is, spring ahead and fall behind, and many people have their own way to remind themselves.

Ziigwan (Spring) Begins. In our history this was usually the time to move to sugar bush and meeting up with people you haven’t seen over the harsh winter months. It was also a time for fishing, trapping, and gathering birch bark for canoe building. This year the official start of spring is March 20th. Spring is a symbol of rebirth and new beginnings and has special meaning during these challenging times – here’s to the renewal of our spirits!

Aanii Boozhoo! Hello and greetings to Onaadidin-giizis (March), Niizhing mdaaswaak-shi-niizhtana-shi-niizh nsa-biboongad (2022). I hope everyone’s having a safe and enjoyable winter season so far.

GTB Onaadidin-giizis (March) Moment: Approval of GTB Constitution. The GTB Constitution was approved by Ross O. Swimmer, Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs, on March 29, 1988, stating the Constitution was effective the same date. As a reminder, the first elected Tribal Council (1988 – 1990) consisted of the following tribal leaders: Joseph C. “Buddy” Raphael, Chair; Percy “Chief” Anderson, Jr.; Gregory Bailey; Chris Bussey; Jack Chambers, Jr.; Louise Kane; and Leonard B. Miller. The first resolution passed by the Tribal Council after 3/29/1988 was the Enrollment Ordinance, and subsequent 1988 resolutions continued funding requests for services to tribal members and the establishment and growth of infrastructure in Peshawbestown. It’s always good to remember our history and where we came from, and all the hard work that our ancestors put into the journey to federal recognition.

E-mkowaataagozijig (Sharing Their Knowledge) IV. It was so enjoyable to participate in the E-mkowaataagozijig (Sharing Their Knowledge) Elders Forum last spring, provided by the GTB Anishinaabemowin Program in collaboration with Anishinaabemowin-Teg via Zoom. This year we’re looking forward to a continuation of last year’s gathering, which is E-mkowaataagoziig (Sharing Their Knowledge) IV – it’s tentatively scheduled March 17th and 18th, and it will have more emphasis on the language. The Zoom link will be forthcoming on the GTB website – please check our website for more information. I’m looking forward to more exposure to eyaawing – who we are – and our language!

COVID. Last year President Biden held a remembrance ceremony at the White House on February 22, 2021 to honor and mourn the 500,000 lives lost to COVID-19 in the United States – that number has risen to 955,597 lives lost at the time of this writing. Shall we never forget our loved ones who we lost to this deadly disease. My deepest condolences to those who have lost their lives to this terrible disease, including our tribal members and Native brothers and sisters across the nation. And I sincerely hope that everyone continues to exercise safety and caution.

To keep everyone safe, we would like to remind all GTB members and employees to follow safety guidelines and wear a mask if inside a GTB government building, an EDC facility, and/or any tribally Herkner Property and LIHTC Funding. Free Financial Coaching Available to Tribal Citizens Since June 2020, with grant support from the Wells Fargo Foundation, the Oklahoma Native Assets Coalition, Inc. (ONAC) has been offering three types of free financial coaching to tribal citizens across the United States: 1) credit counseling, 2) homebuyer education, and 3) financial management (i.e. budgeting).

Confidential sessions are offered one-on-one, by teleconference (Zoom) or phone call, with a certified credit counselor, homebuyer education provider, and financial educator, Felecia Freeman (Citizen Potawatomi). Typically, these sessions will last for an hour and are scheduled at a mutually agreeable time.

Thus far, ONAC has offered this free financial coaching to those participating in ONAC’s other programming. Now, ONAC is offering these financial coaching services to a wider group of tribal constituents.

If you are a tribal citizen interested in free financial coaching, you are welcome to complete the following registration form: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ONACcounselingregistration.

Once the form has been submitted to ONAC, our financial coach will work with you to schedule a remote session by phone or teleconference. This confidential financial coaching is available to any American Indian or Alaska Native in the United States, regardless of where you reside.

ANTRIM/GRAND TRAVERSE For the month of March, the elders can make a medicine pouch for themselves. The Elders program will provide material to make a Medicine pouch: the leather material with holes, the leather string, and the beads if you choose to sew them on your pouch.

Elder James Kenwabikise, son of Paul and Isabelle Kenwabikise grew up on Beaver Island. He is the baby of the family, with 13 brothers and sisters. His father and siblings taught James Commercial Fishing was a way of life at a young age. His family depended on it for subsistence. They targeted white (Dikmeg) fish mostly, but also caught Trout (Nmegos), Perch (Saawe) and a few other species. Many “moons” ago after his graduation, he moved to several locations around Michigan. Eventually he moved north to Charlevoix, where he continued his life journey as a commercial fisherman. Out on his fishing tug in the waters of Lake Michigan, he used his knowledge of fishing skills his family taught him to support his family.

He rekindled his relationship with his childhood sweetheart Barb, and now is on his 32nd year of marriage. With his roots set they raised their four children, and now get to watch their four young grandchildren grow. His gentleness of heart shows during family time, which is an important part of his life. His children choose to stay close to home making time to share adventures together as a family. With every new season brings new growth to his family.

The outdoors life suits James, especially on the water in the sun, enjoying all the seasons Michigan has to offer. With a friendly personality and quick wit he can humor all. He is always happy, bringing a positive energy for everyone around him.

As the cold days of Biiboon (Winter) fades, Niimaamaa-aki (Mother Earth) in our region transitions to Ziigwan (Spring). Come celebrate Ziigwan’s renewal with the GTB Heritage Library. Our librarian Francis Carew will host a series of events this month to honor the season.

Fishing with Grandma

Ages 6-8 2016, by Susan Avingaq & Maren Vsetula Adventure begins when Grandma takes her two grandchildren out for a trip to the lake.

After showing the kids how to prepare for a fishing trip, Grandma and the kids enjoy a day of jigging in the ice for fish. Grandma shows them every step they need to know to complete a successful fishing trip, from what clothes to wear, to how to drill and clear holes in the ice, to how to make a traditional Inuit jigging rod. By the end of the day, the kids have a yummy meal of Arctic char, and they have also learned everything they need to know to go out on the lake on their own.

The Benodjenh Center operates the Child Care Development Fund (CCDF) Program with funding provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Child Care. Parents of GTB members under the ages of 13 may be eligible for child care provider support. The CCDF Program supports child care for low income families through child care financial assistance for relative child care, family child care, and center-based child care. Parents who are working, attending job training, or getting an education may be eligible to participate. All eligibility requirements can be found on the application and sliding fee scale.

What you should know: Will my kids listen?

Adolescents who have a good bond with an adult are less likely to engage in risky behaviors. Tell your children you don’t want them drinking or using drugs.

Explain to them how you feel an what you expect from them.

Spend time with your kids and learn what is going on in their lives. If they think you will be there for them, they will be more likely to talk to you about drugs or situations that make them feel uncomfortable. This is especially important during times of change - such as a new school, a move, or a divorce- when they may feel anxious.

The role of first responders

Because wildfires happen year round and are increasing in size and intensity, it is important for fire service personnel to ensure that residents in their district are aware that wildfires can be caused by accidents or careless acts, as well as provide information about how to help prevent human-caused wildfire ignitions.

Firefighter/EMT’s Moore, Link and McDonald have also been training. Over the passed few weeks, they have brushed up their skills on ice rescue, traped or injuried firefighter, and forcable entry. Our full time staff trains daily in house and when available they also train with our neighboring departments.

The greatest danger of wildfires in Michigan occurs during the spring months of March, April, and May, and the autumn months of October and November. The majority of local wildfires are caused by people.

One of the major causes of wildland fire’s is debris burning. A careless person burning trash or yard waste can be responsible for causing wildfires that burn thousands of acres. Check with your fire department for burn bans and local ordinances on debris burning.

NOTICE FROM HEALTH ADMINISTRATOR

Updates From Health Administrator: Soumit Pendharkar The GTB Health Department has administered 5,079 doses as of January 24, 2022.

The GTB Health Department has administered 5,127 doses as of February 10, 2022: -60% of GTB Tribal members in the 6-county service area age 12 and over have received at least 1 shot; -82% of GTB Elders in the 6-county service area have received at least 1 shot; -18% of GTB Tribal members in the 6-county service age 5-11 have received at least 1 shot; -40% of GTB Tribal members in the 6-county service area that are vaccinated have received a booster shot.

• There are currently 2,882 Omicron cases currently reported in Michigan.

-All regions in Michigan are experiencing declines in positivity, case, and hospitalization rates.

-Vaccination is still the best tool we have to moderate the impact of COVID-19. Vaccines continue to protect us from severe disease.

Booster doses have been further shown to strengthen and broaden protection against Omicron and other variants. Everyone should get vaccinated and get your booster dose, as soon as you are eligible.

In November 2021, unvaccinated adults aged 18 years and older were 11.7 X greater risk for testing positive for COVID-19 and 59.2 X the risk of dying from COVID-19, compared to fully vaccinated adults with booster doses.

-Continue to practice mitigation measures including masking at work/school and indoor public places.

Face masks or respirators (N95/KN95) effectively filter virus-sized particles.

-Stay at home if you have symptoms such as chills, fever, or mild respiratory/flu-like illness and get tested as soon as possible.

• At-home COVID-19 test kit continue to be available at the GTB Health Department no cost. Please call 231-534-7200 to make a request, while supplies last. Alternatively, you can request free tests at the COVIDTests.Org website set-up by the federal government.

What this means is that Evusheld is given before an individual might be exposed to COVID-19 and is meant to prevent infection and progression to severe illness.

Evusheld is a monoclonal antibody treatment indicated for patients who are considered moderately to severely immunocompromised.

It is given as two injections and patients are monitored for an hour following treatment. In addition to COVID-19 vaccination, Evusheld is another way that we can protect our community. I would Tanya Raphael is my friend; I am sad she got fired and did not get also like to thank Tribal Council for help and tireless work they have promoted. 2. Bill Sky Eagle, TID 7003- (statement in chat)- My name is Bill Sky-Eagle, Tribal Member # 7003. I have been a tribal member for 32 years and an elder for 20 years. I appreciate our GTB Tribal Staff and leadership and for this forum. My statement: Other tribes nationwide are currently evaluating their blood quantum requirement. The realization is that, if no change is made, in 25-50 years, or less, there will be no full-blood tribal members. Few of current members will be eligible to become tribal members. Our children, grandchildren, etc. will have no pathway to tribal membership. I am confident that our GTB leadership is already carefully considering this, as well as GTB also looking at the possibility of making a significant change in our blood quantum requirement, with an eye to the future? If no change is made, what will become of GTB when there are no members?

Tribal membership is controlled by Article II of the GTB Constitution. Under the Constitution, a historical summary of GTB’s ancestral relationship with the United States is defined by the “Durant roll,” a 1910 federal census of GTB members prior to GTB’s federal recognition in 1980, Sec. II (a). The second element of membership, Sec II (b), was a summary of litigation between the United States and GTB that was effectively settled in 1985.

The third element of GTB’s membership, was a memorialization of the settlement of litigation between United States and GTB. Sec II (c). Incident to these 3 subsections, GTB establish the criteria of one quarter Indian, of which 1/ 8 would be Michigan Ottawa/ Chippewa blood. Any modification of tribal membership would necessitate an amendment of the GTB Constitution supervised an approved by the Secretary of the Interior memorializing the proposed amendments.

5. Deborah Running, TID #187- Thank you for having this zoom meeting and giving me the opportunity to attend, I really appreciate it. I want to echo the earlier comment about re-considering the blood quantum level. My sons have been raised as native men, but they don’t have enough blood to qualify. I just want to support the idea of reconsidering that.

Blood quantum is by its nature a contested application question that has been addressed several times and most recently when the Membership Ordinance was amended and enacted. Changing blood quantum requirements would require a Constitutional amendment by referendum or Tribal Member initiative under Article IX and in addition, would require a Secretarial election.

6. Mary Kelley, TID #2395- I just want to say it has been great participating in this meeting. I learned a lot of info. I did notice that John Petoskey and Sean Cahill were not acknowledged. Tribal Membership needs to understand the importance these two give to GTB and it is a privilege working with them.

I just wanted to say, when I think about my grandmother (and that generation) and the poverty they came from, and all the meetings they had to attend, all they had to do to make our way of life what it is today. I am so grateful for that and for all the tribal leaders I have had privilege of working with over the years. Membership should also 3. A floating holiday was added for use in January-April 2022. A $50 employee appreciation payment was given. Management does support GTB staff and all their efforts, but since COVID, everything has been hectic and not business as usual. 1. Krystina John, TID#5543- I just want to make a comment that I think it would be a good idea to also focus on financial wellness during this pandemic. I have seen GTB members struggling with budgeting and living paycheck-to-paycheck.

Maybe we could employ a financial coach that could offer help at each stage of life? Everyone at each stage of life is going through financial issues. For Youth-make it a requirement they have to go through this program to get their trust fund, etc., offer that advice to anyone in between who needs budget advice. This could also be helpful for those transitioning into retirement. Could be at EDC or GTED, we could pay a portion of costs for that individual.

GTB works with financial institutions that have offered to provide financial literacy training. There are no services offered on an integrated stages of life financial management program; however, we will consider this proposal in conjunction with current financial literacy programs offered to tribal members in connection with current housing programs (pathways to home ownership); employee training and management; (5/3 previous program for employees on financial management); children’s trust funds (educational seminars provided prior to distributions) and any other relevant financial training offered previously incident to tribal domestic assistance programs currently offered. Work sessions will be held for follow up with various departments to assess the nature of the need and develop a program in response to the need.

2. TaShena Sams, TID #4248- First of all, my condolences to families who have lost a loved one. In the past, GTB has always reached out, cancelled events out of respect to bereaved families if necessary. I don’t know if that was considered this time or not. There is a tribal member who has a funeral today, and another yesterday. My condolences and apologies that we are continuing this meeting.

3. Chat Comment-Dwayne Jarmon, TID#4418- I don’t need to speak on open mic, just wanted to ask about if the Tribe is working to access funds from the Build Back Better activities to support infrastructure at the tribe. Of course, it has to be funded.

When funding becomes available, GTB takes the necessary steps to acquire funding. Tribal Council and Management continues to monitor notices of funding availability. Federal statutes, CARES Act, ARPA, Infrastructure bill, and the yearly federal budget bills present multiple opportunities and are monitored on a monthly basis.

4. Dana Greensky, TID #1862- From what I have seen, I think there is a breakdown in communication between management and Tribal Council. I think because you have a lot on your plates, and so many different responsibilities, you entrust the management to fulfill their role responsibly; that doesn’t always occur. I don’t think there is a system in place to where there could be improvements in how management on both Gaming and Government side could handle different situations. If we don’t take the time to listen to our membership, if we don’t address different problem areas, we will not be able to fix those problem areas. I would like to ask that we do something about that, and have something in place for this. There are members who have been most likely wrongfully terminated, because GTB is a sovereign nation, who have no real means of due process.

You can’t sue GTB for being wrongfully terminated. Tribal Members have tried to bring these cases to court and are shut down. This is an issue because there is no avenue for enforcing people to follow federal regulations. I don’t know why we have an HR policy, if it’s not followed. People are being terminated, loss of income is affecting their families. I know there have been several GTB members who have gone to Tribal Council or Chairman and asked for assistance, asked ‘can you take a second look at this and help me figure out, I feel like I was treated wrongly-‘ and oftentimes they are turned away.

If we want to maintain GTB members in these positions, we have to address these problem areas. I would encourage anybody to speak and use the open door policy, hopefully even though the pandemic, we are still able to utilize the open door policy. Presentations have been great, but there is a lot you are unaware of. You don’t have to use the systems that are in place for members; behavioral health, emergency mental health care, you don’t see the process of how that fails sometimes.

Treat our members and get down to a human level, listen and believe when people tell you something, don’t brush us off. Take what we say to heart.

I have been going through the court process in Tribal court. I just want to mention that, when we have youth that are in care/AFS- make sure we have a native overseeing that case. I was in courtroom w/ non-native judge; I feel our trauma and history played a big effect on my court case and how it was handled. How non-natives have treated us and our youth. To have a non-native judge tell me I am not the parent of the children I have been the sole parent/caregiver to, was hurtful. You need to be aware non-native people are making decisions on native youth. That does not work. We need a native on behalf of Miigwetch for your comments. Communication is important to our youth to advocate for them.

6. Dwayne Jarmon- TID #4418- I wanted to bring up membership matters as well, from a different perspective. I’m a descendent of 6 different communities, I was enrolled at GTB when I was a kid. Some tribes have changed their constitutions; My daughter is enrolled in another tribe besides GTB and my other son is enrolled in another tribe. Because of the consent decree GTB signed with the BIA. The blood quantum should be corrected. It’s a challenge for me because my kids are members of tribes that I can’t go as the parent to those meetings, because I’m not an enrolled member of those tribes. We are trying to contribute as a native community to the community, and we really can’t because we’re so separated. We are seeing the impact of having the blood quantum issue. This has been difficult for me personally. Can you outline a response, what does it take to change blood degree requirements to less than ¼ DIB? I believe it takes a survey of the membership, the constitutional change has to happen, legal does an impact analysis, etc.

One more thing- I suffered early life trauma, that came out during the pandemic and negatively impacted my family. Complex PTSD symptoms. I bring this up because historically, natives suffer historical trauma at a greater rate than many other races. I encourage you to review the surgeon general’s recent report on mental health impact on children, especially with the pandemic.

Back to the conversation re: changes in employment-struggling to provide for your children, coming into a stressful work environment, not knowing if you’re going to bring home an infection to your children/family. This could cause negative impacts.

I have spent a lot of time with behavioral health providers. There are times I still don’t feel okay. I wanted to share, there are those who are willing to seek BH but may not able. I wanted to point that out, some of this may be happening with GTB members.

7. Alexa Funmaker, TID #4526- Our tribe needs more transparency.

Also, I believe every single department needs cultural sensitivity training, as well as ‘how to be a good human’ training. I’ve noticed, in many departments, it’s a toxic work environment. There’s no one to go talk to. We need a better system and to work together to build a better tribe for the future. We really need to fall back on Seven Grandfather teachings. Simplify our life will help us in the long run.

The Prosecutor’s office has 3 full time employees.

We continually seek to improve in these areas and hope to offer more resources and support for foster parents. We continue training our staff in foster care area. Foster care has been an ongoing challenge for GTB. 10. Deb John, TID #2418- I have enjoyed working as a part-time on call receptionist in different departments, and I enjoy working with the people. There are so many things that I believe can be changedwe are short staffed in so many departments. This makes it hard for staff to work with people. I have seen staff get upset and angry with the membership, because they are over worked and trying to get everything right. The majority get everything right, it’s just they are short staffed. I am not a manager/leader, it is hard for me to step forward and say what I believe is wrong. As a tribe we need to have more communication, so that we can work out all of the things that are not going correctly. People feel picked on, like they’re being put out as an example of what they’re doing wrong. If you believe someone is doing something wrong, bring it to their attention, let them know!

I really enjoy working for GTB; I have taken a year off because of COVID, but I do feel very protected in working in the position that I’m in now, because we’ve closed the doors and work on protecting the workers.

As of the time the question was asked, there were 66 GTB Members and staff in attendance. A count of 73 participants was noted earlier in the meeting. Dana Greensky, TID #1862- I want to bring to your attention, I have read online and heard a lot about GTB members being mistreated at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa and casinos. Mostly it’s regarding when we are trying to receive our discount, getting rooms discounted. When members make their reservations, they no longer say they are GTB members, because they will be talked to differently. They make reservations and then ask upon check in. I want to make Matthew Bryant aware that his staff at the front desk at GTRS, there are some employees who are problematic and being very disrespectful. I think there needs to be a reminder that GTB owns GTRS, we deserve respect.

Bill Sky-Eagle, TID #7003- Would someone on Tribal Council please speak to the issue of blood quantum? What is currently being done in preparation for the future? Obviously, this is a very important issue. Our GTB tribe needs to be able to prepare for the perpetuation of the tribe for eternity.

Tribal membership is controlled by Article II of the GTB Constitution.

Under the Constitution, a historical summary of GTB’s ancestral relationship with the United States is defined by the “Durrant roll,” a 1910 federal census of GTB members prior to GTB’s federal recognition in 1980, Sec. II (a). The second element of membership, Sec II (b), was a summary of litigation between the United States and GTB that was effectively settled in 1985. The third element of GTB’s membership, was a memorialization of the settlement of litigation between United States and GTB. Sec II (c). Incident to these 3 subsections, GTB establish the criteria of one quarter Indian, of which 1/ 8 would be Michigan Ottawa/Chippewa blood. Any modification of tribal membership would necessitate an amendment of the GTB Constitution supervised an approved by the Secretary of the Interior memorializing the proposed amendments.

15. Jackie Ogemaw, TID #4022- I wanted to say something related to Angie Sanchez’s comment about a centrally located person for different comments/ issues; I thought it would be an excellent idea if there was a central command for people’s IDs/information we can pull from.

Debra Fox TID #358- When I was hired on to the government side in 2007 the paperwork stated that there was an employee assistance center but there really wasn’t one because I tried to access it later in my employment and Human Resources stated there was no such service.

I work at the clinic, the clinic has a copy of my tribal ID, insurance, any information they need. For PNC to access, I have to give them a copy of what they need and also something for proof of residency. If I need to access something with a food voucher, I have to show all the info again. If we turned all the info into-somewhere- and then each department could just pull the information that they need. People don’t always bring all the information they need when they apply for services

For GTB members on this meeting who do not live in the 6-county service area, I am so happy you joined, thank you for participating. I want you to know that we see you. I will make sure our membership in total is looked after, and not just those who live in the 6-county area.

My personal experiences with the check in process/reservations at GTRS-I go right to the desk instead of calling reservation line. In person, I was told continually I had to use the reservation line. If someone is in front of you, that is your immediate customer, that’s who you need to service. This employee rolled their eyes at me; it’s not always vocal comments, it includes tone, looks. I was told there were no rooms available. I went out to my car and called the reservation line, they said they had multiple rooms available.

I appreciate other comments regarding this. Don’t let one bad apple upset the whole apple cart.

Our point of contact is the Tribal Managers Office, who is in contact with the Department Managers. The Tribal government will be implementing a new software program in calendar year 2022 to improve upon access to services. Krystina John, TID #5543- Can Tribal Council request that a Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance get created? (TERO). Lots of other tribes have this.

A TERO requires non-Indian businesses that do business on tribal land to give preferential hiring of tribal members. At the present time, GTB does not have non-Indian businesses that do business on GTB tribal land. GTB does have preferential hiring of Tribal Members on all GTBcontrolled businesses; however, since GTB does not have a single nonIndian employer that operates on GTB land, therefore a TERO would not apply to any present employers.

Tessie Moreno, TID #4100- Amanda can you please read this for me? I don't like to speak publicly: I am very grateful for the access our membership and households have been given for the availability of covid testing and vaccinations. After I had received my first vaccination, I had realized out in the public, others were not able to receive them yet. I saw on the news people were having trouble even getting onto the websites to register to get their vaccination scheduled. Our tribe made it extremely easy for us to get them quicker and I'm very grateful and have been. The tribe has made it easy for us to get tested too and we get to find out the result the same day. And the health staff have been absolutely amazing for these past couple years dealing with this head on. Thank you everyone.

Have employee's give quarterly assessments on their managers that are confidential and actually attended to.

Training is ongoing with all departments. Some departments have had trauma- informed care information and will expand this training to other departments. We have reached out to Inter-Tribal Council for additional training. We also have new Human Resources software with basic training. Joy Harjo is an American poet, musician, playwright, and author. She is the incumbent United States Poet Laureate and only the second Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to serve three terms. Harjo is a member of the Muscogee Nation (Este Mvskokvlke) and belongs to Oce Vpofv (Hickory Ground). An important figure in the second wave of the literary Native American Renaissance of the late 20th century, Ms. Harjo studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts,. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of New Mexico in 1976, and earned an MFA at the University of Iowa in its creative writing program.

Copies of Ms. Harjo’s books are available at local libraries, including tadl.org and sbbdl.org. Ask about book club kits too! If you would like to participate in the NEA Big Read as a family, the youth companion selection is Fry Bread, by Kevin Noble Maillard. We are able to present this event thanks to a NEA Big Read Grant secured by the Traverse Area District Library, the Dennos Museum Center, and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians.
