Aanii Boozhoo! Hello and greetings to Waabigonii-giizis (June), Niizhing mdaaswaakshi-niizhtana-shi-niizh nsabiboongad (2022). Gekpii giimino-kami (It’s finally spring)!

I hope everyone is enjoying Spring 2022 – I’m looking forward to the upcoming summer months!

2022 Election. I would like to congratulate and welcome the 2022 elected Council Members Tina A. Frankenberger, Brian S. Napont and Jane A. Rohl as they begin their upcoming 4-year terms, and I would like to thank the following: the Community Drum (Fred Raphael, David Anderson, Tom Shomin, James Broome, Jacob Broome, Ryan Memberto, and Desmond Madera), our local American Legion’s Eagletown Post 120 (Geveva (Mikki) Pino, Al Pedwaydon, Steve Alguire, and Neal Hornine), John Fowler for his prayers, Judges Long and Akini for administering the Oaths of Office, staff at Leelanau Sands Casino Showroom, the GTB Election Board (Bill Fowler, Steve McClellan, Lawrence (Camp) Bailey, Frank Wilson, and Terri Cobb), GTB staff and tribal members for their contribution to the May 20th swearing-in ceremony – Chi Miigwetch! Bill Fowler did an awesome job as MC, and he shared words of wisdom on the need to respectfully address tribal issues through constructive criticism and offering realistic solutions – things to remember throughout all walks of life. The ceremony was recorded and will be posted on the GTB website – check it out!

E-Mkowaataagozijig V (Sharing Their Knowledge V) MnoKami/Ziigwan Maawnjidowin, the Annual Spring Symposium, was held virtually on April 21st and 22nd, featuring Brian Peltier, Patricia Osawamick, Aarin Dokun, Helen Roy-Fuhst, Isadore Toulouse, Dr. Rhonda Hopkins, Gene Cada, Yvette Pitawanakwat, Martina Osawamick, and Elizabeth Osawamick. Various aspects of our language and culture were the focus of this event, and it was – as usual – a very enjoyable learning experience!

Indian Citizenship Act of 1924.

The Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 was signed into law by President Calvin Coolidge 98 years ago, on June 2, 1924. The Act granted U.S. citizenship to all Native Americans born in the U.S., whereas before that date citizenship wasn’t automatically granted to Native Americans born in the United States as it is done with others born on U.S. soil. Some historians believe that this law was enacted partially because of all the Native Americans who served during World War I. Waabigonii-giizis (June) 2022 Events. Below are a couple notable events for Waabigonii-giizis: Noos-giizhigad (Father’s Day). Noos Giizhigad falls on Sunday, June 19th this year, and wishing all fathers, grandfathers, great grandfathers, stepfathers, foster fathers and all other father figures a Happy Noos-Giizhigad! It’s always good to show your appreciation by a phone call, a card, a gift and/or sending up a prayer for your loved one.

Niibin (Summer) Begins. Niibin officially begins on June 21th.

Traditional summer activities included fishing, hunting, gathering birch bark and berry gathering. Some of the best childhood memories are of swimming near the shores of Lake Michigan, looking for agates and Petoskey stones, picnicking, canoeing, camping, cooking hotdogs over the campfire, riding bikes, hiking in the woods, dune climbing, eating cherries, reading, attending fairs and festivals, and going to Pow-Wows!

To keep everyone safe, we would like to remind all GTB members and employees to follow safety guidelines if inside a GTB government building, an EDC facility, and/or any tribally owned facility – as determined by those entities. This is for the protection and safety of our employees and the entire community. Please follow and practice established safety guidelines, and please refer to the Health Care updates in this issue for further information.

Free Financial Coaching Available to Tribal Citizens

G R A N D T RAVE R SE B A N D O F O T TAWA AND CHIPPEWA INDIANS

Since June 2020, with grant support from the Wells Fargo Foundation, the Oklahoma Native Assets Coalition, Inc. (ONAC) has been offering three types of free financial coaching to tribal citizens across the United States: 1) credit counseling, 2) homebuyer education, and 3) financial management (i.e. budgeting).

May 4, 2022 & June 10, 2022 From 9am - 4pm Michigan Indian Legal Services is offering remote estate planning.

Confidential sessions are offered one-on-one, by teleconference (Zoom) or phone call, with a certified credit counselor, homebuyer education provider, and financial educator, Felecia Freeman (Citizen Potawatomi). Typically, these sessions will last for an hour and are scheduled at a mutually agreeable time.

WILLS, POWERS OF ATTORNEY, PATIENT ADVOCATE DESIGNATIONS, FUNERAL REPRESENTATIVES, AND LADY BIRD DEEDS.

MILS is offering digital estate planning clinics on Wednesday, 5/4/22 and Friday, 6/10/2022 to make creating your estate plan as safe and convenient as possible. These documents can be signed and executed from the comfort of your own home. This Program is open to Tribal Members, Employees, and their family. The guidelines of this program will allow us to cater to a broader group than is typically permitted by MILS’ funders.

Thus far, ONAC has offered this free financial coaching to those participating in ONAC’s other programming. Now, ONAC is offering these financial coaching services to a wider group of tribal constituents.

This Program is available to those who make up to 500% of the poverty and eligibility guidelines. The threshold starts at $67,950 and is increased by $23,600 for each additional household member. “You will likely qualify, even if you

did not qualify before for other services.”

Additionally, we are open and still offering our services statewide to income-eligible individuals and tribes, advocates for the rights of individuals, which advances systems of justice, and works to preserve Indian families through State and Tribal Courts.

ARP Supplement Rental Assistance This a short-term supplemental Rental Assistance Program through the American Rescue Plan that provides rent subsidies for income qualified working families, Elders and disabled Tribal members. This is a tenant-based program where the tenant is subsidized not the rental unit. The family must find their own housing. This allows the family to select a rental unit that meets their needs and the program requirements.

A. To be eligible for rental assistance, applicants must meet all of the below conditions: 1. Be an enrolled Tribal member of the Grand Traverse Band or have GTB enrolled dependents residing in the home; 2. Be eighteen (18) years of age or older; 3. Reside in one (1) of the following counties: Leelanau, Grand Traverse, Antrim, Charlevoix, Benzie, or Manistee; 4. Qualify as a low income family, defined as a family whose income does not exceed 80% of the median income, as published annually by Office of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); 5. Live in a space that requires rental payment; 6. Not receiving assistance through the Emergency Rental Assistance Funds through the US Department of Treasury program;

NAHASDA Rental Subsidy Assistance *Please note the differences in the programs* Eligibility for Rental Subsidy Assistance A. To be eligible for rental assistance, applicants must meet all of the below conditions: 1. Be an enrolled Tribal member of the Grand Traverse Band; 2. Be eighteen (18) years of age or older; 3. Reside in one (1) of the following counties: Leelanau, Grand Traverse, Antrim, Charlevoix, Benzie, or Manistee; 4. Qualify as a low-income family, defined as a family whose income does not exceed 80% of the median income, as published annually by Office of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); 5. Live in a space that requires rental payment. For example; apartment, mobile home park, town house, etc. Rental assistance will not be offered for assistance with mortgage payments, lot rent (of participant owned/mortgaged home) or when renting an individual room; 6. Not be delinquent on their rent at the time assistance is offered; B. The applicant is eligible to receive up to $250.00 per month for rental assistance.

C. Rental assistance may be provided for a maximum of six months in a two-year period.

D. Applicants who receive benefits and become ineligible due to receiving the maximum six months of benefits are eligible to reapply two (2) years after date of initial application.

E. An applicant may not receive rental assistance while receiving the benefit of any other form of housing subsidy for the same dwelling unit. (with the exception of the ARP supplemental assistance) F. Applicants that owe monies to the Grand Traverse Band Housing Department are not eligible for Rental Subsidy Assistance until the balance is paid in full.

B. The applicant is eligible to receive up to $250.00 per month for rental assistance.

C. Rental assistance may be provided for a maximum of six months.

D. Applicants must be received no later than 9/30/2022.

Elders Spotlight Aanii Vi! Our Elder Highlight for Grand Traverse County is Vi Clement from Grawn, MI. Violet Mae (Humminga) Clement is our oldest elder in the six-county service area. Vi is 95 years young! She is a former employee of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.

Vi parents were Jack and Alice Humminga. Her maternal grandma was Eliza (Agosa) Isaac.

Vi is the oldest of her siblings. She had 9 brothers and sisters. There are three left; her brother Gene, a sister Jane and herself. She had 6 children (5 boys & 1 girl) and her baby girl and oldest son has passed on. Thirty + grands and great grands! She said too many to count!

On August 11, 1926, Violet was born in Strongs, MI; in a logging camp by a tree stump, (her mum told her) by a Kentuckian midwife. They moved to Sault Ste Marie Michigan when she was four when her dad got a job at a sawmill. Her hobbies include gardening, knitting, crocheting, beading and embroidering and many babies have enjoyed the blankets she made especially for them. Now-adays, she also enjoys going to Cracker Barrel and watching a little tv.

She worked many years as an X-Ray Technician until she retired and moved to Grawn with her husband Tom Clement. She was the receptionist at the Education Department when it was in Williamsburg, MI. She helped the Education Department with paperwork as needed!

She remembers the fun times at family picnics and playing bingo when she was growing up. Her favorite song is “Amazing Grace” and she sang in the Choir and sometimes still does at St Patrick’s Church in Grawn. One of Vi’s favorite childhood memories is sitting on her bed and her grandma teaching her Ojibwe. She can sing “Happy Birthday to You” in the language, too! Grandma was always telling her: Maa-jon waa-weep-ton! (come here, hurry up!)

Her advice to our youth would be: Behave yourself and don’t do crazy things! Above all – “Honor your Father and Mother”! Good words, Vi! We love you! Vi at home wearing the earrings she just made. Beautiful, eh?

Thank-You to Brian Anthony Sr. who has sacrificed and made a difference during his Military career. First, he served 3 years in the 101st artillery of the Army. Then joined the National Guard for 17 more years. While active in Grayling National Guard he held several positions while he trained. For many years he was the Fire Chief of Army in the National Guard. He was then called out to the Gulf War, serving in Saudi, Kuwait, Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Panama.

Brian was a Sharpshooter, Engineer and NCOIC. Brian has earned an abundance of ribbons, metals, stars and stripes to be proud of during his service.

His wife Diane has been by his side the last 45 years. Together they raised 6 children, have 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

They are comfortably settled in retirement at their home in Boyne City. Brian has many memorable stories to tell of commercial fishing, family, places he has lived, military life, rattlesnakes, spiders and alligators to inform and entertain you.

Sandy Waukazoo was born in Peshawbestown in 1946. She had 8 brothers and sisters and like many young Indians at that time her family was split up and kids were taken away to various Foster homes. Sandy herself went to 8 different foster homes and recalls only one which she liked. That place was on a farm and had cows, and all the other animals and she developed a love for horses. She did say she used to ride the cows to!! When she was 14 and a half her foster parents were going to surprise her with a horse on her 15th birthday. They had it planned out and then suddenly the State came in unannounced and moved her to another foster home. She never got that horse but says it was the greatest birthday present that she never got.

Sandy has 4 children, 12 grandchildren and 22 great grand children and is very proud of them and the fact she is here to enjoy them.

Sandy loves to garden, grow things and keep her yard in great shape.

She likes taking people to the store, thrift shopping, restaurants and appointments and she says the main reason is she knows the feeling when you need to go someplace and have no way to get there. If you are on social media you may even see a post or two from her.

THE QUIET THUNDER OF A COMEBACK STORY

Five years ago, in Dauagiac, Indiana, Nadageki Chivis (known as Nada) was walking home from school when a dial a ride bus struck him in his side. Nada was instantly thrown to the hard ground and laid unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital and was in a coma for two weeks. Edna, his mother, fearing the worst and hoping for the best, related “it was the longest fourteen days of my life!” She sat at his hospital bed, barely eating and barely breathing…praying for Nada.

Prayers answered…Nada woke up and subsequently required four difficult months of intensive rehabilitation – learning to walk and talk again and generally relearn overall muscle coordination. When asked what drove him in therapy, Nada, a quiet and introspective young man, says “I just did what I had to do.” Edna, in contrast, is outgoing and quick to smile, was there at each step. She explained, "I'm a Mom!” The diagnosis was that Nada had experienced a traumatic brain injury as a result of the accident. Concussions are the result of an impact to the head that causes the brain to shake back and forth. In Nada’s case, the impact was so intense that it took extended time for the brain to recover from the trauma. Long term symptoms can include physical, emotional, and cognitive issues…Edna reported that Nada certainly experienced some fatigue, moodiness, difficulty paying attention and sleep disorders during his recovery (they are now back in Michigan living in Benzonia).

Fortunately, coining the old phrase –knock on wood–Nada has not had any acute long term repercussions, Still, during his recovery time the world began to be engulfed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Schools closed and went virtual and for someone who really needed to get back to the pulse of everyday life it was the last thing he needed.

Edna came to the Benzie Outpost in February 2022 to talk to the Youth Services Specialist about Nada. His grades were slipping, and he was spending almost all his time in his bedroom. She asked: “What can I do?” She convinced Nada to come in and talk to the Youth Specialist. And without any real significant words of wisdom or specific action plan implemented, Nada decided it was time to get up and go back to attending school (that was back open). And while it is completely in character for Nada to do things in an unassuming manner…Edna believes the prompting helped Nada (in his own way) come to that decision.

And well, Nada is a big person, so no one pushes him very far unless he wants to be pushed.

And how remarkable is Nada’s re-emergence? His English teacher, Tanika Greisiger, Benzie Central High School wrote “I have been really impressed with Nada in English class. He has been participating in our classroom discussions. He is a very insightful young man and we are very happy to hear what he has to say. I hope he continues to find his voice.” Overall, Nada’s current grades are all A’s and B’s as he is re-building his grade point average up every day–making up for when they were slipping. And Nada is even talking about attending college:” Maybe I can study culinary, maybe I can go into law enforcement, maybe I can study forestry…”

Join the Heritage Library as we celebrate the beginning of Niibin (It Is Summer). Our librarian, Francis Carew, will host a series of events this month to honor the occasion.

All events are held at the Heritage Library. They are free, open to the public, and follow current GTB Covid-19 protocols. They promote literacy in children, Anishinaabe culture, the musical arts, and health through Tai Chi. Events hosted by the GTB Heritage Library, GTB Lifelong Learning, and the Institute of Museums and Library Services. Clearly, Nada has now stepped outside and is exploring new opportunities! When asked why he came out of his room he replied, “my grades were getting pretty bad and I had to get back to school to fix them for my future.” Nada, like the turtle in the Grandfather Teachings, had no need to impress others or exaggerate his accomplishments.

And so … perhaps, the world simply whispers –Welcome back Nada glad you're here!!!

CHECK OUT SOME GREAT SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES Build a Fairy House on the Fairy Trails A truly unique and free things to do in Traverse City with kids is to explore the Fairy Trails. As of 2020, The Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park created a trail next to the Butterfly Garden and across from the Meadow’s Loop entrance. It’s filled with small fairy houses, and your kids are welcome to build their own fairy homes near the trailhead, as long as they use natural materials.

CHEAP KIDS MOVIES AT THE STATE THEATRE It can be expensive to watch a movie at a theater unless you visit the State Theatre at the right time. It offers classic films on Wednesdays and kids’ matinees on Saturdays for just 25 cents! Also, Friday Night Flicks are available for just a few dollars.

The Benodjenh Center is open Monday thru Friday from 7:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. Childcare is available for children between the ages of 3-12 year olds and infants and toddlers that are enrolled in the Early Head Start Center Base Program. The Benodjenh Center Head Start and Early Head Start serve GTB children and families. The CCDF Program supports child care for low income families through child care financial assistance for relative child care, family child care, and center-based child care. Parents who are working, attending job training, or getting an education may be eligible to participate. All eligibility requirements can be found on the application and sliding fee scale.

TICK BITES AWARENESS

AVOID TICK-INFESTED AREAS, USE INSECT REPELLENT, DAILY CHECKS, BATHE/SHOWER Know Protect yourself and your family against tick-borne diseases by following these tips: Avoid tick-infested areas: • As ticks live in grassy, brushy and wooded areas, walk in the center of trails to avoid contact with overgrown grass, brush and leaf litter at trail edges.

• Protect your pets – dogs and cats can come into contact with ticks outdoors and bring them into the home. Talk with your veterinarian about the best tick prevention products for your pet.

Use insect repellent: • Apply repellent containing DEET or Picaridin on exposed skin.

• Treat clothes (especially pants, socks and shoes) with permethrin, which kills ticks on contact or buy clothes that are pre-treated. Do not use permethrin directly on skin.

• Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when applying repellents.

Perform daily tick checks: • Always check for ticks on yourself and your animals after being outdoors, even in your own yard.

• Inspect all body surfaces carefully and remove attached ticks with tweezers.

• To remove a tick, grasp the tick firmly and as closely to the skin as possible. With a steady motion, pull the tick’s body away from the skin. Cleanse the area with an antiseptic.

Bathe or shower: • Bathe or shower as soon as possible after coming indoors (within two hours) to wash off and more easily find ticks that are crawling on you.

• Wash clothing in hot water and dry on high heat to help kill ticks in clothing.

Not all ticks spread the same germs. MDHHS can help to identify ticks you may encounter outdoors. Residents can email photos of ticks to MDHHS-Bugs@michigan.gov for identification.

Michiganders can also submit ticks to MDHHS for identification free of charge. For more information on how to submit your tick and/or photos, visit Michigan.gov/Lyme

Tick Bite: What to Do Ticks bites can make people sick. Below are some steps that you can take after a tick bite to reduce your chances of getting sick and how to get treatment promptly if you do get sick.

Remove the tick as soon as possible 1. Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as you can.

2. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Don’t twist or jerk the tick.

3. After removing the tick, clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.

4. Dispose of the tick by flushing it down the toilet. If you would like to bring the tick to your healthcare provider for identification, put it in rubbing alcohol or place it in a sealed bag/container.

Consider calling your healthcare provider In general, CDC does not recommend taking antibiotics after tick bites to prevent tickborne diseases. However, in certain circumstances, a single dose of doxycycline after a tick bite may lower your risk of Lyme disease. Consider talking to your healthcare provider if you live in an area where Lyme disease is common.

Watch for symptoms for 30 days Call your healthcare provider if you get any of the following: • Rash

• Headache

• Fever

• Muscle pain

• Fatigue

• Joint swelling and pain

Treatment for tickborne diseases should be based on symptoms, history of exposure to ticks, and in some cases, blood test results. Most tickborne diseases can be treated with a short course of antibiotics.

2021 Michigan Lyme Disease Risk Map Lyme disease is an emerging disease transmitted by the blacklegged tick in Michigan. Local risk for Lyme disease varies depending on whether infected ticks are in the area. Several local and state agencies partner to conduct surveillance for Lyme disease in people and animals. The below map classifies risk based upon field collected and infected ticks and reported human cases of Lyme disease in Michigan (see the legend for specific criteria). The map is updated as new information becomes available.

Blacklegged ticks are active from March to November in Michigan. They are commonly found in wooded and brushy habitats.

A single dose of doxycycline may be administered within 72 hours of tick removal only if the attached tick can be reliably identified as an Ixodes scapularis tick that is estimated to have been attached for longer than 36 hours or is not flat. The prophylactic dose for adults is 200 mg and for children is 4.4 mg/kg, up to a maximum dose of 200 mg.

If the tick cannot be identified or prophylaxis is not indicated, the patient should monitor their health for 30 days for fever, rash, or other symptoms.

Ixodes scapularis

Eryt h e m a Mig ra n s ( EM) The initial skin lesion occurs in 60-80% of patients and will present at the site of a tick bite after 3-30 days (average 7 days). A bull’s eye appearance accounts for less than 20% of all EM cases; the most common appearance is a homogeneously colored oval lesion.

When a patient has EM, testing for Lyme disease is not generally necessary or fruitful; empiric treatment is indicated. Clinical diagnosis of Lyme disease should be reported to your local health department.

If there is no apparent rash, but the patient exhibits fever, fatigue, headache, arthralgias, and/or myalgias, AND had risk of exposure to ticks, then testing for Lyme disease should be considered.

La b o ra t o ry Te s t in g A two-step test should be ordered, consisting of a screening test followed by a confirmatory EIA or Western blot. When ordering testing, keep in mind: • • •

Antibodies can take several weeks to develop, so patients may test negative if infected only recently.

Antibodies normally persist in the blood for months or even years after the infection is gone; therefore, the test cannot be used to determine cure.

Some tests give results for two types of antibody, IgM and IgG. Positive IgM results should be disregarded if the patient has been ill for more than 30 days.

In patients with persistent or recurrent joint swelling, retreatment with a second 4-week course may be needed.

GTB Fire Department GRILLING FIRE SAFETY PREPARE & STAY CALM Summer is the time to enjoy vacations, camping, and picnics; however, summertime also brings fires and burn injuries due to fireworks and outdoor cooking.

Know how to prevent a burn while you enjoy outdoor activity this summer. ►Wear short sleeves or roll them up when cooking on the grill. ►Use long-handled barbecue tools. ►Keep a 3-foot safe zone around grills, fire pits and campfires. ►Attend public fireworks displays; this leaves the lighting to the professionals.

First aid for burns:

► Place the burn in cool water for three to five minutes. ► Cover the burn with a clean, dry cloth. ► See your doctor if the burn is larger than your palm.

Fires start when the heat is too high. If you see any smoke or the grease starts to boil, turn the burner off. ►Make sure you are awake and alert. Clean your grill after each use. This will remove grease that can start a fire.

Open your gas grill before lighting.

Place the coals from your grill in a metal can with a lid once they have cooled.

COVID-19 Updates From Interim- Department Manager Doris Winslow

The GTB Health Department is reporting eight (8) new positive COVID-19 case for the workweek ending May 26, 2022. Our most recent 7-day positivity rate was 22.8% (compared to 16% for the State of Michigan). In the month of May 2022, we reported twenty (25) positives in total. We reported 96 new cases for January 2022, 22 new cases for February 2022, and 3 new cases for March 2022 and 3 new cases for April 2022.

Currently, all GTB service areas are in high community level risk for all GTB Counties. You can check your CDC COVID-19 community levels at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/yourhealth/ covid-by-county.html In Michigan, new cases are showing an increasing trend in all regions. Hospital admissions and hospital census are showing an increase, although ICU census continues to decline. We continue to closely monitor the spread of Omicron BA.2 in Michigan. In the U.S., BA.2 remains most predominant but the proportion of BA.2.12.1 is increasing faster than other lineages. BA.2.12.1 is the most common circulating strain in Northeastern U.S. In Michigan, since March 15, there have been 947 Omicron BA.2 specimens identified from 57 counties and City of Detroit.

STRONGHEART CENTER BENZIE FITNESS CENTER “Sandra Jewell - Why I Like the Benzie Strongheart Gym.

The gym is close to my home on the Benzie Reservation, that makes exercising more convenient for me.

I have severe arthritis in my knees and have been using the exercise equipment at the gym to flex my knee joints in a safe comfortable environment, much safer than having my knee seize up half way around the 4 Seasons Rd circle. This is much easier on my knees than trying to ride my adult tricycle around the rez.

When my knees hurt, I can't peddle the trike, so I prefer going to the gym and using the low impact equipment offered there. I've noticed increased flexibility in my joints since returning to the gym on a regular basis. I really enjoy the curves circuit workout and sit-down elliptical machine. Overall a workout at the gym is good for my body and helps with weight loss.

The elk herd in Michigan is located in the tip of the mitt of the northern lower peninsula region. They reside in small groups scattered among private and public land. In the past, some Tribal hunters have been fortunate to harvest Elk near a road for an easier haul out, while others have gotten elk and needed a group of friends and family to drag it out. Every hunt is different. Plan on the elk weighing over 400 lbs.

The questions below are for Natural Resources Department data collection. You will not be excluded from a tag based on your answers. Answer all questions to the best of your knowledge and leave any notes at the bottom.

This allowed GTB to sell product made here in Peshawbestown! These products are for SALE at Eagletown starting. You can purchase bottles of Maple Syrup for $7.99 & $10.99 and Maple Candied Pecans for $7.49.

VEGETABLE PLANT GIVE-AWAY Veggie plant give-away was a hit! Agriculture & Food Sovereignty Dept set up at the Pow Wow Grounds Pavilion and offered plants to community members to help incentivize people growing their own food at home.

Plants available to community members include tomato, pepper, hot pepper, basil, squash, broccoli, kale, and more! GTB Citizens and GTB Employees can participate in the give-away. To help get everyone excited for the growing season to come, here are a few photos from the 2021 growing season! Spring is just around the corner! Many came on down, picked through our flats of vegetable plants to take home to grow delicious food for your family!

This position is a great opportunity for someone who has a desire to learn and share information about traditional life ways, including traditional planting techniques, wild food gathering techniques and more!

"The Traditional Agricultural Life Ways Workshop Contractor will report to the GTB Agriculture and Food Sovereignty Coordinator.

Traditional Agricultural Life Ways Workshop Contractor will be developing curriculum and host a bi-monthly monthly workshop through the growing season. This includes developing posters, GTB Newsletter content, electronic/email promotions, and other advertisements to promote attendance of these events. This can include incentivizing attendance through rewards, prizes, or other techniques to encourage GTB tribal member attendance. Attendance will be tracked using sign-up sheets and will be shared each month with the Agricultural Coordinator."

This position can pay up to $25/hr, it is a great part-time opportunity to get involved and get paid a respectable wage for disseminating this important cultural knowledge.

MISSING & MURDERED INDIGENOUS PEOPLE COMMUNITY GATHERING On, Thursday, May 5th GTB held its first annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous People’s event to raise awareness of the epidemic within Indian Country. Scott Scholten lit the sacred fire while Pat Osawamick said the opening prayer, to start the day’s event. Behavioral Health shared many resources and materials to families to aid them with the signs of domestic abuse, addiction, and other factors that can play a role in Missing and Murdered Indigenous People.

The volunteers and community members hung red garments, such as ribbon skirts and shirts, as well as other red garments, to highlight the issue. The garments have a powerful presence, as they reflect power and strength of indigenous people, while bringing some familiarity to the people within our own community that have been afflicted. Some of these ribbon skirts and shirts were made at the month-long workshop(s) held by the Cultural Department, to help community members create their own skirt, or shirt, to honor those who have been stolen from us.

Native Americans face unacceptably high levels of violence and are victims of violent crime at a rate much higher than the national average. Native American women are disproportionately the victims of sexual and gender-based violence, including intimate partner homicide.

For far too long, justice has been elusive for many Native American victims, survivors, and families. Our community will not let our loved ones be forgotten.

MMIP Toolkit for Action

When should you report a person missing? Is this a voluntary disappearance? Should law enforcement be contacted? Should you organize community action?

community is a dramatic and life-changing decision and does not occur without significant reasons, one of which may be prevention of further abuse.

The harsh reality is that many Native people who are victimized by domestic violence disappear, are abducted, or are murdered by their abusers. The Department of Justice reports that Native women are stalked and murdered at higher rates than other populations of women in the United States. The lack of adequate law enforcement in tribal communities increases the importance of communities being informed and prepared to immediately respond to a disappearance.

The following actions may increase awareness of the steps to take and help prepare tribal communities to respond during this very difficult time.

The disappearance of every Native person requires an immediate response. The hours and minutes following a disappearance count. In order to respond immediately to a disappearance, it is recommended that advocacy programs develop a protocol ahead of time for when a person goes missing.

You should contact the local law enforcement where the disappearance occurred as soon as possible. Based on the circumstances, notifying tribal law enforcement in the local community of the missing person is also important. While many Native people live away from the community they consider home, they stay in touch with family and friends. When contacting law enforcement, provide as much detail as possible that could help establish the identity of the missing person. Write down the names of the people you speak to and request copies of any documents completed, including the missing person’s report.

The steps you take and contacts you make with law enforcement are very important to document. Keeping a journal will help you remember conversations with law enforcement and other agencies.

This process makes an already difficult situation less stressful, and writing down the dates and times, names and telephone numbers of everyone you speak to will be highly valuable. It is also recommended to complete a calendar at the end of each day of the events or developments.

Informing, maintaining, and increasing public awareness of the disappearance is very important. The alert, bulletin, or flyer circulated broadens the number of people who can help locate the missing person. The alert should provide basic information about the person and how to report any information to the law enforcement agency or community member serving as a contact person.

In organizing to respond to issues concerning missing and murdered indigenous people, GTB encourages each person to remember selfcare. Addressing the reality of missing and murdered Indigenous people is very difficult and can create high levels of stress. Stay connected to friends and family. Rely on your cultural beliefs and practices for support as a foundation for these efforts.

A consequence of this reality is that domestic and sexual violence occurs on a spectrum of abusive behavior and can include abduction and murder. If a person you know is missing, taking immediate action is very important. The quicker you respond, the faster they may be located and provided the help needed.
