Booshoo Aanii, Mina-nkweshkan nimkodaading (Happy New Year), and welcome Niizhing mdaaswaak-shi-niizhtana-shi-niizh nsabiboongad (2022)! I look forward to new beginnings in Minidoogiizis (January) as we roll up our sleeves and dig in to the hard work of addressing the continued problems resulting from the pandemic, and other issues and concerns that face our tribal nation.

COVID. The highly contagious omicron variant of COVID-19 has created additional challenges, and I sincerely hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday season.

To keep everyone safe, we would like to remind all GTB members and employees to follow safety guidelines and wear a mask if inside a GTB government building, an EDC facility, and/or any tribally owned facility. This is for the protection and safety of our employees and the entire community. It is also critical that Tribal members and community members wear masks when out in the public and at public gatherings, abide by frequent hand-washing, and practice social distancing. If you must attend a public gathering, it is imperative that you wear a face mask. Health officials have confirmed that public gatherings are one of the top causes of outbreaks, and the reason is because mask-wearing and social distancing are not enforced, in some instances. Please follow and practice established safety guidelines, and please refer to the Health Care updates in this issue for further information.

JANUARY 2022 HERITAGE LIBRARY EVENTS

Nimaamaa-aki (Mother Earth) in our region has transitioned to Biboon (It is Winter). Come celebrate Biboon at the GTB Heritage Library. Our librarian Francis Carew will host a series of events this month to honor the season. *Music Lessons: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 3-5 PM Guitar, Bass, Piano, and Voice lessons by appointment only-Sign up for a weekly 30-minute time slot. Must bring your own instrument-The Heritage Library has a piano for piano lessons.

All events are free, open to the public, and follow GTB Covid-19 protocols. They promote literacy in children, Anishinaabe culture, and the musical arts. Events hosted by the GTB Heritage Library, GTB Lifelong Learning, and the Institute of Museums and Library Services.

Grand Traverse Band-Youth Services $25 Youth Christmas Gift Application Eligibility: GTB youth 0-17 years old living within the six-county service area. $25 Christmas gift checks will be mailed to youth addresses on file with the membership/accounting offices.

On January 6th, 1838, Samuel Morse demonstrated his telegraph system for the first time, at the Speedwell Iron Works in Morristown, New Jersey, using Morse code. Morse code is a method of communicating using a sequence of dashes and dots — or dits and dahs — which sound like clicks. Later, the American code was improved by Joseph Henry, an American Scientist, and that new code was first displayed on January 11, 1838. An International Morse Code was adopted in 1851 and has remain mostly unchanged since then.

The popular Maritime distress signal, “SOS” was widely used up to 1999. “SOS” is still an effective way to signal that you need help. It can be signaled with a flashlight, sounds, or objects. The pattern is three short, three long, three short.

•• • – – – ••• By the way, SOS does not stand for “Save Our Ship,” or anything else, really.

During WWI and WWII, Morse Code was used to communicate sensitive information. The Code Talkers occasionally translated their messages from English to their indigenous language and then to Morse code and back.

Morse code can be heard, seen, or felt. An American prisoner during the VietNam war was put on television and was able to blink his eyes to get a message out that he was being tortured. Computers can now translate typed words into Morse code, using lights, vibrations, and sounds.

Fire Rescue

GTB Fire Department -On 12/16/2021 GTB Fire responded to a medical call for service at 3:17am. Over the next 10 hours GTB fire responded to 12 more incidents related to high winds in the area. Shortly after returning to the station around 4:00am, the Putnam Road area lost power, including the fire station.

The station generator was started and plugged in so we could continue operating.

At 5:29pm the first wind related incident came in, an unknow fire. Units from GTB Fire and Suttons Bay Fire were dispatched to this incident. Two engines, one rescue unit, one ALS ambulance, two brush trucks, and one chief responded. Upon arrival it was found that a power pole had broken in half, as a result of a tree falling on it and started a brush fire. As units were responding, several other calls for service came in for Sutton’s Bay Fire.

Leelanau Sands Casino Management and GTB Fire were in contact with the American Red Cross to set up a shelter at LSC. With power starting to be restored and the Lodge offered discounted rooms, the decision was made not to set up a shelter, but to allow the resources to be allocated to areas harder hit with the storm. GTB Fire had 6 personal working throughout the incident and was support by, Tribal Mgmt., Tribal Maint., Tribal Police, Tribal Emergency Mgmt., Tribal Communications, Leelanau County Road Commission and Leelanau County 911/Emergency Mgmt.

GTB Fire also responded on multiple tree and power line down called through out the morning.

Power was out for most of the Peshawbestown area and several roads were blocked due to trees down with power lines. GTB Fire assisted with the removal of trees blocking roads that were not entangled with any power lines. GTB Fire supplied generator power to assist when the generator at the Medicine Lodge had mechanical problems. Throughout the next 24 hours, until power started to be restored, GTB Fire assisted in monitoring generators that were in use, continued to check for any further issues as a result of the wind. • Prevent use of medical devices.

Power Outages Extended power outages may impact the whole community and the economy. A power outage is when the electrical power goes out unexpectedly.

Power Outage Tips: • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.

• Use a generator, but ONLY outdoors and away from windows.

• Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.

• Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.

• Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices.

• Check with local officials about heating and cooling locations open near you.

How to Protect Yourself During A Power Outage:

Go to a community location with power if heat or cold is extreme.

Preparing for a Power Outage Take an inventory of the items you need that rely on electricity. Plan for batteries and other alternative power sources to meet your needs when the power goes out, such as a portable charger or power bank. Have flashlights for every household member.

Determine whether your home phone will work in a power outage and how long battery backup will last.

Know Your Medical Needs Talk to your medical provider about a power outage plan for medical devices powered by electricity and refrigerated medicines.

Find out how long medication can be stored at higher temperatures and get specific guidance for any medications that are critical for life.

Food Storage Have enough nonperishable food and water.

Keep freezers and refrigerators closed. The refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours. Use coolers with ice if necessary. Monitor temperatures with a thermometer. Throw out food if the temperature is 40 degrees or higher.

Using Appliances During Power Outages Install carbon monoxide detectors with battery backup in central locations on every level of your home. Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Generators, camp stoves or charcoal grills should always be used outdoors and at least 20 feet away from windows. Never use a gas stovetop or oven to heat your home. Turn off or disconnect appliances, equipment, or electronics. Power may return with momentary surges or spikes that can cause damage.

Returning After A Power Outage: • When in doubt, throw it out! Throw away any food that has been exposed to temperatures 40 degrees or higher for two hours or more, or that has an unusual odor, color or texture.

• If the power is out for more than a day, discard any medication that should be refrigerated, unless the drug’s label says otherwise. Consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately for a new supply.

Updates From Health Administrator: Soumit Pendharkar • The GTB Health Department has administered 4,783 doses as of December 20, 2021.

-Continue to practice mitigation measures including masking at work/school and indoor public places.

59% of GTB Tribal members in the 6-county service area age 12 and over have received at least 1 shot;

-Stay at home if you have symptoms such as chills, fever, or mild respiratory/flu-like illness and get tested.

82% of GTB Elders in the 6-county service area have received at least 1 shot;

-Pick up a free at home COVID-19 test.

You may obtain an at-home COVID-19 test kit for home-use at no cost. Please call 231-534-7200 to make a request.

You can use at-home testing to reduce the risk of spreading the virus during this holiday season. Please consider keeping at-home-tests at home or where you may need them. At-home tests may be used if you have COVID-19 symptoms or have been exposed or potentially exposed to an individual with COVID-19. Even if you don’t have symptoms and have not been exposed to an individual with COVID-19, using an at-home test before gathering with unvaccinated children, elders, those who are immunocompromised, or individuals at risk of severe disease can reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

19% of GTB Tribal members in the 6-county service age 5-11 have received at least 1 shot; 87% of GTB government employees are fully vaccinated.

• It is anticipated that the latest variant of concern, Omicron, will become predominant in our area. In the U.S., Omicron currently accounts for 73.2% of the total COVID-19 infections. There are 10 Omicron cases currently reported in Michigan.

-The rapid increase in Omicron cases has startled public health officials, with cases doubling every 1.5 to 3 days. Healthcare facilities are bracing for impact, with COVID-19 hospitalizations at a pandemic high accounting for 22.9% of inpatient beds in Michigan.

-Vaccination is still the best tool we have to moderate the impact of COVID-19. All though we anticipate a rise in new cases and breakthrough infections, vaccines continue to protect us from severe disease. Booster doses have been further shown to strengthen and broaden protection against Omicron and other variants. Everyone should get vaccinated and get your booster dose, as soon as you are eligible.

• The GTB Health Department has now delivered monoclonal antibody therapy treatments to 6 patients. This treatment is offered to al l patients who meet clinical criteria. The treatment is authorized for high-risk patients for treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 and post-exposure prophylaxis in high-risk patients. Clinical trials in high-risk, positive patients have reported 70% reduction in hospitalizations or deaths. As post-exposure prophylaxis, 98.5% of patients in one trial remained asymptomatic and for those who became symptomatic, symptoms resolved sooner than the placebo group. High-risk criteria for severe disease include older age (e.g.

65 or greater), BMI of 25 or greater,

pregnancy, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, immunosuppressive disease, currently receiving immunosuppressive treatment, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, chronic lung diseases, sickle cell disease, neurodevelopment disorders or other conditions that confer medical complexity, having a medical-related technological dependence not related to COVID-19 (e.g. tracheostomy), other medical conditions or factors that place the patient at high risk for progression to severe COVID-19.

The GTB Health Department is monitoring the effectiveness of its new monoclonal antibody treatments against variants. If you have questions, please contact the clinic at 231-534-7200 and request to speak to a medical provider.

• January is Cervical Health Awareness Month. Bringing awareness to cervical health is important as cervical cancer is the 4th most common cancer among women.

Approximately 99% of cervical cancer cases are linked to infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV), a common virus that is passed through intercourse. One of the best ways to prevent HPV infection is to receive the HPV vaccine. Here at the GTB Family Health Clinic, we offer HPV vaccination and screening for cervical cancer.

It is with great sadness we say goodbye and wish Helen Cook the best for the next part of her journey after 24 years in serving clients in Human Services at GTB. This thank you from BHS Counselor, Bill Martell, says it all: “I would like to thank Helen for her years of service working for the tribe. She has helped countless GTB families and individual tribal members in many, many ways. Her commitment, kindness, and warmhearted care for those she has served, often presented with a good dose of Irish-Scottish humor, has made her part of our GTB tribal member family and she will always be remembered as a member of that family. Her leadership, intelligence and sense of justice has been a great reflection on what it means to be a social worker. If you had the opportunity to work for her, you knew you were doing good work and that you had someone who would advocate for you and treat you fairly. 2022 will be an exciting year for the GTB sugar shack activities. With the evaporator prepared for a big boil, the Natural Re¬source Department (NRD) will be evaporating sap and bottling syrup from the maple trees surrounding the NRD building on Putnam Rd. We are considering options for producing value-added maple products as well.

2021 was a productive year at the Peshawbestown Giitiigan. Produce grown by the Agriculture & Food Sovereignty Department made its way to Elders Program, Benodjehn Center, GTB Food Pantry GTB Employee Distribution, the GTB Satellite Offices, and was sold to Executive Chef James Broome at Turtle Creek Casino.

Production was down slightly from the inaugural year; 2019. That was due to a late start (Ag Dept staff was hired end of May) and no longer managing production of the hoop house space at the Kewadin/ Antrim Garden. The community members at the Kewadin/ Antrim Garden did a great job managing the site, producing food, and distributing it to the tribal community in Antrim and Grand Traverse County. Approximately $10,000 worth of produce was distributed.

Estimated Project Timeline (Activities Vary Based on Temperature)

With another successful year in the rearview, GTB is well poised to begin its most productive year yet in 2022. A hoop house in Peshawbestown is planned for construction in the spring. This structure will allow for the production of warm season transplants such as tomato, pepper, Drilling/setting taps: eggplant, cucumber, squash, and other popular crops.

INTERNATIONAL MIND-BODY WELLNESS DAY “International Mind-Body Wellness Day” Jan 3 is recognized as ‘International MindBody Wellness Day. One thing we all have in common is being in the thick of this relentless health pandemic, which has no-doubt taken a toll on our health in one way or another. One of the most important things we can do is to take care of ourselves from the inside-out. When we nurture our mind-body wellness, it can be an effective preventative medicine improving our overall health. Studies have shown the many benefits of intentional movement & mindfulness to reduce stress and boost our immune system. Remember, taking care of ourselves can be done in many fun ways and is different for everyone. It can be as simple as taking a walk outside breathing fresh air, stretching, sledding with the fam, practicing yoga, anything you enjoy – do that. It can also mean self-care in the form of asking for help, talking to family/friends and allowing yourself grace because everyone’s journey is different.

Tribal Member Highlights Rio Red Sky Drops New Album “LAVISH” Rio Red Sky is an upcoming Musician/ Influencer based in Houston, TX. She is a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.

Growing up she always had a passion for being a good role model, along with the natural passion of loving to sing.

Rio states, “Life is about finding something you adore doing and letting it speak to your soul.” She has decided to venture into the music world while pursuing her collegiate education. Since she was a young girl, she remembers writing her own songs, and singing to every radio station that played.

Rio said, “I am beyond blessed to be able to express myself through music and create this amazing form of art for my friends, family, fans, and everyone around me. Music has allowed me to convey my emotions, my life, my weaknesses, and my strengths. My music is a personal diary that holds no judgment.”

She consideres her music a mix of Pop music, R&B, and Hip Hop. Her inner child who felt strength on stage, who felt loud and powerful singing, the girl who has a voice and will be heard. Inspired her to pursue music.

Cindy Winslow Introduces TCAPS Anishinaabe Expressive Cultural Series program

the event was part of the Indigenous Education Program’s monthly rotating exhibit on Anishinaabe culture.

Through a grant from the Northern American Heritage Fund, the program has been able to create traveling exhibits that teach about Indigenous culture through a historical and material approach.

Winslow, who previously worked at Eyaawing Museum and Cultural center, takes the exhibits to a different school each week. The exhibits’ contents change focus each month.

Winslow said TCAPS’ program has received a lot of positive feedback regarding their other programming, especially from the parent committee members, who help plan the Anishinaabe cultural events and whose children are in the program.

“They came up to me after the presentation last time and were like, ‘This was so great, let us know if you need any help on any of the ones in the future, et cetera, et cetera,’” Winslow said.

The program provides academic and cultural support to Indigenous students and is focused on a year-long approach to educating about Indigenous communities.

TwoCrow said growing up in the small town of East Jordan, their family had to keep their traditional arts “behind closed doors,” because it wasn’t socially accepted.

But TwoCrow said that her grandfather knew the importance of passing down their family’s traditions, so he showed her everything she knows today about the art of beadwork.

“He put his heart into everything he taught me and made sure those teachings were given in love,” TwoCrow said.

At age 11, TwoCrow was taught how to traditionally bead by her grandfather, she said from there, it took over her life. Soon she was dedicated to beading and explained that with each bead she laid, then sewed down, she grew closer to her cultural identity.

It was about middle school, when TwoCrow came to a realization, that she needed to decide whether she wanted to thrive in her Anishinaabek traditions, and face continued racism or to hide that part of herself and thrive in the mostly, non-Indigenous community she lived in.

“I dove headfirst into beading,” TwoCrow laughed, adding that she was inspired by her grandfather’s dedication to showing her the beauty of being Odawa from such as young age, despite how dangerous it was at times.

She said that in remembering her grandfather’s commitment, from there beading became a normal part of her every day.

“It was the first art that helped shape my identity as an Odawa kwe (woman),” TwoCrow said.

In an act of “recreating bloodline histories,” TwoCrow said that she takes inspiration for her art from childhood memories, cultural traditions, or images from her grandfather’s paintings of Anishinaabek florals.

From there, she said it is really up to her creative energy to meld them together into a piece that represents both the past, present and future.

TwoCrow said for her personally as an artist, that she likes to create “one-time pieces,” unique in the colors of the beads, materials used, and images she creates. It’s important, she said, that she gives her whole heart to every piece she crafts.

Besides being featured all over the northern region and state of Michigan at various museums and cultural buildings, TwoCrow’s beadwork is also held by the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C and has been featured at Electric Forest Music Festival.

Currently, TwoCrow works full-time as director of Suttons Bay Indigenous Education Program, while beading full-time also. She has an upcoming project with a popular streaming platform, stating she cannot give details just yet, but it will bring a lot of representation for Anishinaabek art into mainstream media.

As a mother of four, TwoCrow said that she has passed on those traditions of beadwork and Anishinaabek jewelry making to her three daughters.

It brings her a lot of happiness to see her children become connected to a family lineage of art, she said.

“Our family had a lot of cultural theft from colonization, I know my grandfather would be proud that I am carrying on our art.”

William (Pete) Palmer William (Pete) Palmer 72, formerly of Newberry, MI., passed away at his home on November 7, 2021 in Benzonia, MI. with his family by his side. He was born October 9, 1949. He is survivd by his wife Claudia, and his children, Will of Grand Rapids, Cheyenne, Gabby, Angel and Mack of Benzonia and grandchildren.
