Aanii Boozhoo! And hello to Makwa-giizis (February), Niizhing mdaaswaak-shi-niizhtana-shi-niizh nsa-biboongad (2022). I hope everyone’s had a safe and enjoyable post-holiday season, and staying warm and safe during these cold winter months.

COVID. The highly contagious omicron variant of COVID-19 has created additional challenges, and I sincerely hope that everyone continues to exercise safety and caution.

To keep everyone safe, we would like to remind all GTB members and employees to follow safety guidelines and wear a mask if inside a GTB government building, an EDC facility, and/or any tribally owned facility. This is for the protection and safety of our employees and the entire community. It is also critical that Tribal members and community members wear masks when out in the public and at public gatherings, abide by frequent hand-washing, and practice social distancing. If you must attend a public gathering, it is imperative that you wear a face mask. Health officials have confirmed that public gatherings are one of the top causes of outbreaks, and the reason is because mask-wearing and social distancing are not enforced, in some instances. Please follow and practice established safety guidelines, and please refer to the Health Care updates in this issue for further information.

2022 Tribal Council Meetings The Tribal Council Regular Sessions occur at 9:30 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month.

The Tribal Council Special Sessions occur at 9:30 a.m. on the last Wednesday of every month.

Both sessions will be held on zoom.

Due to the pandemic our elders haven’t been able to gather together for our normal activities. Until further notice there will be no group activities per our Emergency Covid response team.

Here are some finished projects from some of our elders that they have done in the safety of there homes.

NEW Youth Intervention Specialist

Aanii, Ryan Memberto ndizhinikaaz, Ma’iingan ndodem, Peshawbestown ndoonjibaa. My name is Ryan Memberto. I am Wolf clan from Peshawbestown and I am the new Youth Intervention Specialist I for Leelanau county. I graduated from Suttons Bay High School and have been a member of this community my whole life. I consider myself a lifelong student of our Anishinaabe culture and language and I believe that it’s crucial for our tribal youth to learn our traditions and language because the youth are the future of our tribe. In our culture, we are taught to always think ahead for seven generations because the decisions we make today can have a lasting impact on the lives of our children and grandchildren and even their children. If we don’t pass on these traditions and our language then someday they will cease to exist.

I really look forward to working with our tribal youth and their families to share my knowledge and help enrich the lives of the youth within our tribal communities. Miigwech.

Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story – Ages 3-5 (and beyond) 2019, Kevin Noble Maillard

Kevin Maillard’s first book is told in a lyrical, rhyming style. It is about fry bread, history, family, and much more. “Fry Bread is food . . . is color . . . is shape . . . is sound. . .” In addition to the main story, there is discussion about how fry bread became a part of many Native Americans’ diet after the people were forced from their land and given limited rations by the United States government. He has included his family fry bread recipe.

Kevin Maillard is an enrolled citizen of the Seminole Nation. Fry Bread is beautifully illustrated by Peruvian artist Juana MartinezNeal.

We Had a Little Real Estate Problem: The Unheralded Story of Native Americans & Comedy 2021, Kliph Nesteroff, comedy historian 14  This is an account of Native Americas impact on the world of comedy - from the early days of the Wild West shows in the late 1800s – when Native Americans were forced to tour in wild west shows as an alternative to prison, to the Charlie Hill breakthrough of the 1970’s, to today and the 1491s and The Native Ladies of Comedy, and more.

It was one of the most reliable jokes in Charlie Hill’s stand-up routine: “My people are from Wisconsin. We used to be from New York. We had a little real estate problem.”

Public Safety WINTER WEATHER PREPAREDNESS & SAFETY TIPS When it comes to winter safety, be prepared with winter weather preparedness tips for yourself, your family, and your home.

Extreme winter weather can occur at any time and everyone should have emergency supplies in your vehicle and at home. You never know when power outages may occur or if you will be stranded on the road in the middle of winter.

Listed below are a few things to be prepared at home and on the road. Learn more at www.Ready.gov for more WINTER PREPAREDNESS TIPS: • Check on neighbors as extreme cold affects older adults and young children differently. Don’t forget about your pets as cold can affect animals.

• Create an emergency supply kit for your car. Include jumper cables, sand, a flashlight, warm clothes, blankets, bottled water, and non-perishable snacks.

• Keep the gas tank full.

• If trapped in your car, stay inside and out of the cold.

• Pay attention to weather reports and warnings of freezing weather and winter storms.

• Have access to Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio for emergency alerts.

• Keep extra batteries for radios and flashlights.

• Gather supplies in case you need to stay home for several days without power.

• Install & test: smoke alarms & carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups.

• Keep an emergency preparedness kit at home with extra flashlights, batteries, first aid kit, non-perishable food and medications.

• Annually inspect your homes pipes so they will not freeze.

• Sign up for your community’s warning system.

GTB Fire Department FIRE IS FAST In less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into a major fire.

Here are some important ways to keep your home safe from fire.

SMOKE ALARMS

Working smoke alarms give you early warning if there is a fire.

Put smoke alarms on every level of your home.

✔ Place smoke alarms inside and outside of all the sleeping areas. ✔Make sure all of your smoke alarms work. Test them each month. ✔Replace smoke alarms that are 10 years old or older.

IN THE KITCHEN

Cooking is the number one cause of home fires.

FIREFIGHTERS ANDERSON AND JOHN Probationary Firefighters JORDAN ANDERSON 705 and M’KONZ JOHN 706 will finish their State of Michigan Firefighter I and II training. They will have a graduation ceremony on February 22nd.

As they conduct thier final pratical exam, there will be various stations, putting their mind and body to the test; providing safety to the community.

If you see them around wish them well on their final exams!

✔Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, broiling/boiling food. ✔If you leave the kitchen, turn the burner off. ✔ Keep things that can burn away from your cooking area. ✔Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove, so they won’t get bumped.

Heating is the second leading cause of home fires.

✔Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, wood stoves, space heaters and radiators. ✔When you leave a room or go to bed, turn heaters off or unplug them. ✔Plug space heaters directly into the outlet and never use an extension cord or power strip. ✔Make sure your heater has an automatic shut-off switch that turns it off if it tips over. ✔ Have your furnace, chimney and chimney connector inspected by a professional each winter. Make repairs before cool weather sets in.

Updates From Health Administrator: Soumit Pendharkar The GTB Health Department has administered 5,079 doses as of January 24, 2022.

-59% of GTB Tribal members in the 6-county service area age 12 and over have received at least 1 shot; -82% of GTB Elders in the 6-county service area have received at least 1 shot; -17% of GTB Tribal members in the 6-county service age 5-11 have received at least 1 shot.

There are currently 1,392 Omicron cases currently reported in Michigan.

-Case rates are expected to increase in the Traverse City Region and plateau in the Detroit Region.

-Vaccination is still the best tool we have to moderate the impact of COVID-19. All though we anticipate a rise in new cases and breakthrough infections, vaccines continue to protect us from severe disease. Booster doses have been further shown to strengthen and broaden protection against Omicron and other variants. Everyone should get vaccinated and get your booster dose, as soon as you are eligible.

-Continue to practice mitigation measures including masking at work/school and indoor public places.

-Stay at home if you have symptoms such as chills, fever, or mild respiratory/flu-like illness and get tested.

- At-home COVID-19 test kit continue to be available at the GTB Health Department no cost. Please call 231-534-7200 to make a request, while supplies last.

Alternatively, you can request free tests at the COVIDTests.Org website set-up by the federal government. Private insurers are also required to cover up to eight FDA approved over-the-counter tests per month per covered individual.

Local health departments in the State of Michigan are shifting away from contact tracing for the general population.

If you test positive or have been exposed, please follow guidelines for isolation and quarantine. The general public is no longer required to report a positive at-home test result. If a pharmacy, provider, or medical professional tests a person, they are still required to report results. Also, if you test positive, you should report the results to your primary care provider to get care you may need. The GTB Health Department has now received a new monoclonal antibody therapy called Evusheld.

In addition to Evusheld, the GTB Health Department currently is able to offer REGEN-COV, Sotrovimab, and Paxlovid.

Evusheld received an FDA Emergency Use Authorization for pre-exposure prophylaxis of COVID-19 in adults and pediatric individuals (12 years of age and older weighing at lest 40 kg): who are not currently infected with COVID-19 and who have not had a known recent exposure to an individual infected with COVID-19 and who have moderate to severe immune compromise due to a medical condition or receipt of immunosuppressive medications or treatments and may not mount an adequate immune response to COVID-19 vaccination or for whom vaccination with any available COVID-19 vaccine, according to the approved or authorized schedule, is not recommended due to a history of severe adverse reaction to a COVID-19 vaccine and or COVID-19 vaccine component.

Dr. Derek Schmidt, new Chief Dentist, born and raised in Rochester, MN. He was active in sports throughout his youth and went on to study Ecology at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities for his undergraduate degree. He moved to Ann Arbor in 2014 to attend dental school at the University of Michigan where he met his fiancée, Cassie. In 2018, they moved to the Traverse City area and have been practicing dentistry ever since.

He and Cassie have a yellow lab named Ned who joined their family in early 2020. When not busy with Ned at the beach, Dr. Schmidt enjoys hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, and spending times with friends and family in his free time. He is very excited to join the dental team at the Grand Traverse Band and looks forward to providing excellent dental care to his patients.

2022 Ice Fishing Safety Guide Ice fishing is one of many winter activities to pass time during the cold season. If you enjoy fishing in the open water, you may also enjoy ice fishing and it comes with many benefits: great aerobic activitiy, access to areas on a lake that is not accessible with a typical boat, & connecting with your inner Anishinaabe roots.

In the winter, the same public launch/park you fished in the summer freeze solid, the entire surface is accessible with gear.

Please note: GTB NRD does not recommend driving larger vechicles on the ice.

If the ice is snow covered, the ice appears white and not clear (slush), or if the ice is near inlets, outlets, or springs: assume the ice is not safe. No ice is 100% safe, use caution!

● Larger fish like Pike and Walleye you will use a stronger line and spoons. These fish can be targeted with tip ups. For Pike use steel leaders and for walleye use monofilament leaders, or a larger minnow weighed down close to the bottom. Most people fish with a pole for panfish and have tip ups out for pike and walleye nearby. ● If spearing, make sure to bring pine boughs and sticks to mark the large spearing hole when moving or leaving for the day aerobic accessible.

Maple Suger Shack 2022 will be an exciting year for the GTB sugar shack activities. With the evaporator prepared for a big boil, the Natural Recsource Department (NRD) will be evaporating sap and bottling syrup from the maple trees surrounding the NRD building on Putnam Rd. We are considering options for producing value-added maple products as well.

Giitiigan Production Through the winter, The GTB Agriculture & Food Sovereignty Department will be offering GTB members a few crops that will be stored for distribution through the winter months. These crops include:

studying to become a fully-certified sound therapist through biofield tuning.

She explained that the specific sound therapy works with the body’s electrical system, both the central nervous system and the magnetic field that surrounds the body by using different sound frequencies in tuning forks.

Either weighted or unweighted tuning forks are placed on and around the body for targeted nervous system relaxation in response to physical or mental traumas, ranging from 174 to 528 hertz depending on the body’s response and what is needed specifically by the client.

Though using tuning forks for sound therapy is a relatively new practice, Miller said Anishinaabek have known the power of sound since time immemorial — which is why certain sounds, like drum and the eagle bone whistle, are used in ceremonial practices.

Miller has since worked under the instruction and alongside elders and traditional healers within her community. She has been given Anishinaabek teachings about medicinal plants, practices and ceremonies used in her culture.

She takes some of that deeply-rooted knowledge to expand her understanding of trauma work and combines it with biofield tuning, sound therapy, and massage therapy to help heal those who have an interest in her line of healing work.

TRAVERSE CITY — The first time Courtney Miller was drawn to sound was around the age of 12 when she attended “Gneejawnisananik,” a culturally-based summer camp in Alden for Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians youth.

Both physical and mental traumas can build up in the body, Miller said, and that the use of these therapies has been beneficial to her clientele over the years. She said that she sees an array of people from different backgrounds and needs for these specific therapies.

It was when she first heard the rhythm of a traditional drum.

“I really do believe that the therapies can help with one’s connection to themselves and their healing,” Miller said.

Members from the community presented a song to the camp one evening — and Miller recalled how the thumpthump, thumpthump of the drumstick hitting the stretched, taut deerhide of the drum echoed her own heartbeat, and that it moved her.

During the song someone blew on an eagle bone whistle, and the high-pitch sound hit a blood memory for her.

“I had never heard that sound before, yet it was so familiar to me,” Miller said. “I knew its importance immediately.”

From then on, Miller was curious why her body and mind reacted that way to those sounds, not knowing that later in life it would lead her to a path of healing others.

In the following years, Miller’s immediate family began to reconnect with their culture, making traditional regalia and dancing at pow wows.

“It was healing, I learned to reconnect to myself through the movement of dance in rhythm to the sounds of those beating drums,” Miller said.

Now, 42, Miller is a licensed massage therapist, and in the last decade has been
