We are continuing to follow-up with on all of the discussion and information I have been reporting on for the past year regarding our EDC and financial status. As a Tribe we cannot have business plans or investments made without a cost benefit analysis, a financial review by one of our trusted financial institutions, and input from membership. If we look at the investments in the past 10 years we have spent 10’s of millions that has not benefitted our Tribe in any way financially.

The Revenue Allocation Ordinance of our Tribe was wellwritten and if followed would require the checks and balances for all investments that I am mentioning.

The RAO specifically states in clear and simple language: § 1604. Use of Net Revenues; Tribal Economic Development (b) The Tribal Council shall have the authority to appropriate and expend net revenues allocated to Tribal economic development to supplement funding for ongoing Tribal economic enterprises.

Requests for supplemental funding for the Tribal ongoing businesses and enterprises shall be considered in accordance with GTB governmental procedures. The Tribal Council shall thereafter allocate those net revenues designated for Tribal economic development to the ongoing business or enterprise as it deems necessary and reasonable. (c) Separate accounting and audits shall be done for economic development projects of the GTB/EDC. All enterprises and businesses are to be treated as “stand-alone entities” in the accounting and audit statements. (d) The GTB Economic Development Plan shall be operated pursuant to the development policy adopted by resolution of the Tribal Council. At a minimum, this development policy shall provide: • • • •

(1) Criteria for business plans; (2) A mission statement; (3) The Tribal Council or its appointed agent shall review developments on a monthly basis; and (4) Establish a minimum internal rate of return

We are conducting interviews for a new CEO and CFO at EDC. We are looking for bright, experienced individuals that will hear our visions and plans to have all businesses operating in the BLACK and a long-term economic plan for our future: Sports betting, Class II gaming, online gaming. It has become apparent that cost-benefit analysis and return on investments has not been a part of planning by previous management. We must get out of the habit of investing our Tribal funds into projects that have no plan for a return on that investment. This is a past practice by previous Council and is something I like to call ‘gifting’ Tribal dollars. Their mentality was that we are gifting dollars and they would not include those dollars into any business plan for any type of planned return on that investment.

Every direct and indirect investment into any project would be a part of a business plan and require cost benefit planning.

M n o o m i n G i i z i s ( R i ce Moon) We are looking at new plans on previous poor business decisions: 1) Profitability of the TCCH gas station; 2) planning for brokering our white spaces for franchises and partnerships to become profitable. We know that there are other areas of management that need attention within EDC and we will work towards these changes.

I would like to discuss a variety of other issues facing our Tribe and the membership:

TURTLE CREEK MARKET GRAND OPENING

The Grand Opening of the New Turtle Creek Market took place on June 29th at 9am. The event had a great turnout as many were excited to see the new GTB operated fuel station for themselves. A prayer and Drum Ceremony was given and Tribal Chairman McClellan Welcomed everyone with opening remarks. David Bernard from GTRC and Steve Feringa went over Development Details. This was all followed by a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony by Councilors Mark Wilson, David Arroyo, Secretary Tina Frankenberger and Chairman McClellan.

The Turtle Creek Market gas station is now open to the public. Be sure to stop in as they are currently giving discounts to tribal members for fuel.

SAMUEL BAGENSTOS: A SUPREME COURT CANDIDATE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS PROTECTING THE RIGHT TO VOTE DEFENDING THE RIGHTS OF AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES FIGHTING FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS DEFENDING WORKERS’ RIGHTS PURSUING LGBT RIGHTS

I recently was invited to interview Samuel Bagenstos, a Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School, currently running for MI Supreme Court. Mr. Bagenstos specializes in constitutional and civil rights litigation. I was given the opportunity to ask him questions concerning current Native American legal affairs, his track record concerning the defense of civil rights and how voting for Mr. Bagenstos would benefit the Grand Traverse Band and the Native American Community.

Samuel Bagenstos has been a civil rights lawyer for more than 20 years. He served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights under President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder. He has spent most of his career fighting unjust practices that violate people's rights. One particularly high profile case Mr. Bagenstos took part in was the assistance for the people

of Flint at the onset of the Flint Water Crisis. “In Mays v. Snyder, Sam has been representing Flint residents seeking relief for injuries they received in the Flint Water Crisis. After a federal district judge barred their constitutional claims from going forward, Sam took the case to the federal court of appeals and won. This gave Flint residents a chance to make their case in court and hold officials accountable.” He has also represented and won several cases involving the rights of women to equal treatment in the workplace, for the rights of people with disabilities, and for the right of all Americans to vote. Bagenstos has brought four civil rights cases to the Supreme Court of the United States.

Mr. Bagenstos identified that the current MI. Supreme Court seats are persuaded toward the right wing side of politics. He is hoping that if he is elected he will “even out the pendulum.” When asked about his stance on Line 5 Bagenstos stated “we know its going to be one of the biggest cases to be brought to MI supreme court. Issues concerning the environment grow more and more important.” Mr. Bagenstos expressed his understanding on how important the waters of the Great Lakes are, especially for those of us living in Northern Michigan. Having a representative that takes the environment into consideration will be an asset concerning the potential hazards of Line 5.

When asked about the treaties of 1836 and 1855, as well as HR 3133, Mr. Bagenstos stated that the US Government has a “historic debt to Native Americans,” believing in the assistance of Native American tribes by the Federal Government and the recognition of such treaties as historically and morally important. Bagenstos also respects the self Governance of Tribal nations and states that “not only are relationships but partnerships with tribes are crucial in supporting and maintaining their self governance.” One thing is certain, If elected Mr. Bagenstos is dedicated to protecting our Civil - By Jared Sonderegger, Editor Rights.

OEW Traveled to Peshawbestown on July 9th through the 11th for a 3 on 3 Summer of Hope basketball tournament.

This free to attend traveling basketball tournament allows for many Native communities to network and share stories of their struggles and triumphs from over 25 Tribes across the country.

This was event held at the GTB Housing Basketball Court. It was a tremendous turnout with great food, music, and team building games at the end of each quarter.

Environmental Documentary Earns Multiple Awards

Some say you can’t try turn back the hands of time.

Especially when it comes to environmental and cultural injustices that have occurred over the past 100 years. Yet that’s exactly the story revealed in the one-hour documentary, The Ottaway – A River Reborn.

And it’s a story that’s earning high acclaim within the television industry.

The film, produced by Discover Mediaworks from Madison, WI and broadcast in Michigan through CMU Public Television, recently earned recognition by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences by winning a prestigious Emmy Award from the Michigan Chapter. Ironically, during the same week, the Outdoor Writer’s Association of America awarded the film honors as the top Conservation Documentary in their national awards.

“It’s rare for a film to be honored with these two awards,” said Dan Bertalan who directed, filmed and edited the production.

“But it’s also a rare honor to have the chance to tell such a remarkable story of cultural irony, controversy and revelations through the hearts of minds of thirty impassioned stakeholders.”

With funding support from the Grand Traverse Band of the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, the film explores the struggle of trying to remove multiple dams and restore the Ottaway River that flows through the heart of Traverse City, Michigan (known as the Boardman River). The film weaves together the foundations of Native American values, the complexity of a changing society, and the unspoken voices of nature’s population of “environmental citizens” whose lives are interwoven with history and future of the river.

Plans are already underway for a sequel documentary as the final chapter of the river unfolds with the building of a stateof-the-art selective fish passage that will once again connect spawning fish from the Great Lakes with historic waters they haven’t been able to reach in over 100 years.

William “Billy” Cabinaw Born on a cold but nice Thursday, February 24, 1955 went to meet his ancestors on July 3rd, 2018. He is survived byFire his brother Sacred Joseph L. As the nursery rhyme says “Thursdays child has far to go” and Billy did, after graduating Funeral Service from Mancelona High School in “73 he served with distinction in More information to follow. the US Navy as a S.E.A.L. then onto the oil well drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico but his heart was always in Northern Michigan. The great outdoors was his favorite place to be and while he enjoyed hunting and fishing, his interests where far more varied. As a skilled orator he always spoke his mind and was multilingual, fluent in both sarcasm and bulls#*t he was also an accomplished guitarist and artist. Billy was a proud member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians and spent many hours traveling and enjoying the company of his fellow tribal members and Elders. Billy would want all of his family and friends not to weep but to be honest and share his stories and to experience life to the fullest as he did.

HERITAGE DAY POWWOW / PARADE

The National Cherry Festival held the Heritage Day Pow Wow Dance at the Festival Open Space in Traverse City on July 3rd. As always this was presented by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. There was an abundance of beautiful and colorful regalia on display for Cherry fest on lookers from across the country. The heritage Day Pow Wow helps spread insight on Native American culture and celebration, as attendees can see the fluid Native spirit through traditional dance, dress and music.

Visitors were welcome to take part in the festivities having opportunities to dance and view exhibits from GTB Gov. Departments. Vendors were on site featuring hand made Native American crafts.

Samantha worked tirelessly using her gifted craft and artistry to create beaded gifts that were presented to WWII veterans as gifts during a the SACO cultural exchange. This included visiting guests from Taiwan. The recipients were overwhelmed with gratitude and the gifts presented a great pride for our GTB community and nation. Chii Megwech Samatha !

The Grand Traverse Band also participated in several local parade events, Including Heritage Day Parade and the Junior Royale Parade. Jamie Kalush, the Education Youth Site Coordinator from Charlevoix/Antrim won the, “Director’s Award” from the Heritage Day Parade 2018. Congratulations Jamie!

The Miss Wiigwaasmin contest was also held during the PowWow. The winners were; Wiigwaasmin Warrior-Aydrian James Day, Miss Wiigwaasmin-Yasmin Alfonseca, Little Miss Wiigwaasmin-Emma Stevens. Congrats to all!

A Golden Eagle Feather dance fan was donated by GTB Tribal Elder, Linda DePetro, and presented to Samatha Callaway- TwoCrow for her recent commitment and dedication to a cause, on behalf of Eagletown Post 120 and the GTB community.

MI. INDIAN FAMILY OLYMPICS

On Friday, July 20th, the 31st Michigan Indian Family Olympics took place at Central Michigan University’s Bennet Track & Field in Mt. Pleasant MI, hosted by the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe. After opening ceremonies a storm cell emerged causing the event to be postponed for about a half hour.

Participants and staff were told to seek shelter until the storm passed. The beginning events were overcast in the morning as participating GTB athletes took the field braving the wind and rain to earn their medals. The weather cleared up in the afternoon and the humidity set in. GTB participants continued to push through the thick air and heat giving their all in the variety of competitive events.

Overall GTB came in 3rd place overall from all participating tribes. This was the first year not having won the Tug of War event. We are looking forward to heavy participation by GTB members next year to win back that trophy!

ELDERS OPEN FORUM Tuesday, July 10 2018 10:00 am- 12:00 pm, Traverse City Three Mile Office

Chairman McClellan began by discussing the projects that Tribal Council is looking into pursuing. He mentioned the importance of diversifying. He stated that a meeting was held recently on the fiber optics project. Everything is looking good; we hope to eventually set up an LLC. Tribal Council hopes to provide its own internet and cable services, similar to what Charter would offer. Chairman McClellan mentioned hemp/cannabis and sports betting as other business opportunities. He discussed the U.S. Supreme Court decision that opened up sports betting for areas outside of Las Vegas.

Councilor Brian Napont discussed some issues he has noticed within his first month on Tribal Council. He discussed the many projects GTB has going on that are outside of gaming. He stated that gaming is where we make the most money, adding that we need to concentrate on gaming revenue. He is concerned about diluting our resources with projects outside of gaming.

Councilor Napont stated that we have released the CFO and CEO of our casinos. He added that management on the gaming side has been lacking and we need to act now.

Seasons Buffet was discussed. GTB Elder Leonard Corey asked if it is true that Seasons won’t be finished until the fall. Councilor Napont replied that the deconstruction started in December 2017, and the contract to have it remodeled wasn’t signed until this July.

Secretary Tina Frankenberger replied that this project will not be finished until the first of the year 2019. She stated that Tribal Council is looking into other options to make this profitable, including bringing in a franchise restaurant or other businesses. GTB Elder Pat Castaneda asked who determined the contract.

She thought that Seasons was supposed to open again this summer. Councilor Napont replied that the former CEO and CFO made the contract decisions.

Chairman McClellan added that the CEO and CFO were just at the top of the decision making, there was still a team working beneath them and that is what we need to focus on improving. He stated that the numbers tell the story and added we must stop losing money. Councilor Napont discussed the negative effect on businesses.

He stated that there has been nothing done to support LSC and we should be attracting more tourists to that casino.

The quality of food at Seasons Buffet was discussed. Pat Castaneda stated that when Seasons opens up again, new chefs should be hired. GTB Elder Pat Putney added that in the past, food in the pans was dry and unappetizing. Meal comps at Seasons Buffet were also discussed. Leonard Corey stated we need to show that the comps are coming back into making money. Ways of improving Seasons Buffet were discussed at length. Councilor Napont stated that he believes buffets are good for bringing in gamblers. GTB Elder Marcia Emery stated she had heard that when Seasons reopens, it will be using menus instead of a buffet. She has heard a lot of disagreement about this. Chairman McClellan stated that we are in business on the EDC side to make money. Our primary focus there should be making money, not creating jobs. Leonard Corey suggested bringing in a nationally recognized franchise restaurant, such as Applebee’s, to help increase revenue.

The new gas station near Turtle Creek Casino was discussed. Marcia Emery asked if there would be a restaurant in the gas station.

Treasurer Jane Rohl stated that there is white space available in the gas station for a store or restaurant to come in.

Leonard Corey stated the design of the entrance to the gas station is poorly done. The gas station is not easily accessible from the main road. Pat Castaneda mentioned that flashing lights or a larger sign is needed. Marcia Emery stated that the banners can’t be read from the road. Chairman McClellan stated there was little planning done on this new gas station and the sign is not sufficient.

Leonard Corey asked whether or not Tribal Council has done anything to correct the losses on the EDC side and the mismanagement by the former CEO and CFO. He stated the importance of getting reports from the EDC staff. Councilor Napont stated that things will change because the Membership elected board members who will hold the EDC management staff accountable. He reiterated that the more we try to diversify; we are pulling revenue from the casinos.

Treasurer Rohl stated that EDC affects every dollar spent on the Government side, adding that we need to focus on increasing gaming revenues. Eagletown Market is not very profitable and she foresees problems with this new gas station as well. The original plan was to have slot machines in the new gas station, but that won’t be happening until 2019. Pat Putney stated she has spoken to three TCCH employees who love the new gas station.

Pat Castaneda spoke to report that after many months of bringing her housing issues before Tribal Council, her issues have been addressed and Housing is just waiting for a contractor to fix her roof. The lights at the Charlevoix community center have been fixed. Pat stated that Elders living in Charlevoix needed a representative to speak up for them. Chairman McClellan stated that we are in the process of finding a Tribal Manager who will oversee all departments and hold people accountable, making sure Tribal members get answers. Pat added that she never sees Tribal police officers out in the Charlevoix area.

GTB Elder Linda Francis asked if winterization is still being done on housing units. She asked how she could get her house winterized. She would like her crawlspace to be insulated; she is having problems with the floors being very cold. Linda asked if there is a duct cleaning service that GTB uses. Sonya Zotigh will follow up with Housing Department. Councilor Napont stated he will take these issues up when going over budgets.

Treasurer Rohl stated that we will be refocusing our priorities. We need to look at doing more preventative maintenance on housing units.

Tribal Council would like to provide that to all GTB members. Secretary Frankenberger stated we should be taking care of housing issues and focusing on services, rather than doing so many giveaways. We have to prioritize and what benefits the membership as a whole should always come first.

Housing issues were discussed further. Pat Castaneda stated that renters get paved driveways, but those who own their homes have rocks in their driveways. Renters get snow removal services and owners do not. Chairman McClellan stated that sidewalks are needed in Charlevoix. Linda Francis discussed issues with the mail carrier driving too fast and blowing her horn at Linda as she walks down the road. The mail carrier has also left rude notes.

GTB Elder Tony Sineway spoke next. He discussed an incident regarding kids shooting off fireworks near his house at approximately 2:00 am. Someone had put a pop rocket in his window aimed at the air conditioner, and shot the AC unit off the window. He had called Tribal Police but the officer said he couldn’t come out, because he was the only officer

there at the time. Treasurer Rohl suggested that the police captain and the Public Safety department manager could come to the next Elders Open Forum meeting. GTB used to have a neighborhood watch program; she wants this to be reinstated.

Cross-deputization of police officers was discussed. Leonard Corey mentioned an incident regarding a Benzie Elder reporting kids climbing on roofs. Police are not on patrol in Benzie from 3-7 am. It was mentioned that Grand Traverse County is the only county where there is no cross-deputization.

GTB Elder Elizabeth Yates spoke to mention that she needs blacktop on her driveway. Councilor Napont mentioned that many Elders need home repairs. The needs of the Government side are high and EDC needs to get their revenues up. The Elders emergency program was briefly discussed. Councilor Napont asked Sonya Zotigh if she knows what this program costs annually.

She replied that housing spent $250,000 on home repair. There are pots of money we can look at to supplement the Elders emergency fund.

Pat Castaneda discussed an incident where a GTB member had a house fire, and was moved into a house that supposedly had black mold in it. She asked how this was allowed to happen.

She also wanted to know why that house remained vacant for so long. Chairman McClellan replied that these concerns have gone on for some time and have not been addressed; we need to step it up.

Leonard Corey stated that he used the Elders emergency fund, sent in the receipt, but was told there was nobody available to sign and process the expense. GTB Elder Tanya Raphael replied that the process often takes a long time. It has to go through several different people. Problems with New World Systems software were discussed.

GTB Elder Ernie Gablow discussed problems he is having with internet service. The internet appears to be available, but he cannot actually connect to it.

Sonya Zotigh stated she spoke with George McClellan regarding Wi-Fi at the Elders complex. It is not activated yet. Treasurer Rohl spoke about installing additional towers for better signal. This should be possible soon. Chairman McClellan reiterated that Wi- Fi is coming. He stated he will look into a time frame and get an answer back to Ernie.

Pat Putney discussed the health fair luncheon. She had asked Anna Harwood with Elders Advisory if she would do the health fair, and was told that they did not get paid for last year’s health fair. OMB won’t let them get paid because it looks like they are working.

The Elders Advisory was not paid for either the health fair or the MIEA conference in 2017. Sonya Zotigh stated that this will be taken care of, and asked that they resubmit the invoices. It will be paid out of the Elders program.

Joyce Wilson discussed the driveway to the park on Kewadin Rd. It is in disrepair. Secretary Frankenberger stated that there is a plan to extend the small driveway up to the parking lot. This will either be fixed this year or next spring.

Leonard Corey asked when the Constitutional Committee will be brought back. Sonya Zotigh replied that there is a Work Session scheduled. Chairman McClellan added that many areas of our constitution are vague and need to be looked into.

The 2% distribution was briefly discussed. The Elders Advisory was funded for $56,817.

GTB EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS See a Flash, Dash Inside According to the National Weather Service (NWS), summer brings an increase in lightning strikes.

While the warm weather invites many outside activities, if you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you. Take a moment during National Lightning Safety Awareness Week (June 24-30) to learn how to stay safe in a thunderstorm with tips from NWS. Outdoors: •

When thunder roars, go indoors - move inside a sturdy building or hard top vehicle with the windows up as soon as you hear thunder.

•

Do not take shelter in small sheds, gazebos, dugouts, bleachers, under isolated trees, or convertible automobiles.

•

Avoid open fields, the top of a hill, or a ridge top.

•

Stay away from water, wet items, such as ropes, and metal objects, such as fences and poles. Water and metal do not attract lightning, but they are excellent conductors of electricity.

Indoors: •

Stay indoors. Stay inside at least 30 minutes after you hear the last clap of thunder.

•

Do not touch anything plugged into an electrical outlet.

•

Use a corded telephone only for emergencies; cordless and cellular phones are safe to use.

•

Avoid contact with plumbing; do not wash your hands, and do not take a shower or bath.

8 Steps to Prevent Vehicular Heatstroke On hot days, the temperature inside your car can reach deadly levels in just 10 minutes.

In 2017, 42 children died of vehicular heatstroke. Heatstroke begins when the core body temperature reaches about 104 degrees. A core body temperature of about 107 degrees is lethal.

When left in a hot car, a child›s temperature can rise quickly. A child›s body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult›s.

Help prevent vehicular heatstroke with these eight steps from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: 1. Never leave a child or pet in a car unattended—even if the windows are partially open or the engine is running, and the air conditioning is on.

2. Make a habit of looking in the car—front and back—before locking the door and walking away.

3. Ask your childcare provider to call you if your child does not show up for care as expected.

4. Place your purse or briefcase in the back seat so you do not accidentally leave a child or pet in the car.

5. Write a note or place a toy in the passenger’s seat to remind you of the child or pet in the car.

6. Teach children not to play in cars and store keys out of a child’s reach.

7. If you see a child alone in a locked car, get them out immediately and call 911.

8. Remove the child from the car and rapidly cool them if they are in distress due to heat.

Your Tribal Fire Dept. Has taken delivery of its first new fire truck in over 13 years. This truck will replace the current rescue when it goes into service after training and outfitting.

The older truck was replaced because it would no longer pump water. This new truck gives us the firefighting package we need as well as the rescue we need. This gives us greater capacity to fight fire and has different rescue options to help us make you safer.

Caregiver Program WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR FAMILY CARE GIVER SUPPORT SERVICES? • Informal, unpaid family Caregivers of older adults. An older adult is the age used on your Title VI Part A application that was determined by the tribe to be an elder. .

• Grandparents and relative caregivers, age 55 and older, who are the primary caregivers of a child not more than 18 years old because the biological or adaptive parents are unable or unwilling to serve as the primary caregiver of the child. They must be related to the child by blood, marriage, or adoption and live with the child.

The OAA requires that the Family Caregiver Support Program give priority to: • Caregivers who are older individuals with the greatest social need.

• Older individuals with the greatest economic need, particularly low income individuals.

• Older individuals providing care to individuals with severe disabilities, including children with severe disabilities.

Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Elders Program – Elders Emergency Services Aanii GTB Tribal Elders: Tribal Council has approved another fiscal year of funding for the “Elders Emergency Service Component” for FY 18. This program is for all elders living within the six-county service area and there are no income requirement.

The guidelines for this service is categorized on your age ranging from $300 to $500.

The Elders Emergency Service program is to assist elder’s that may have an emergency, but is not limited to any situation.

Examples: Food, Heating, cooling, snow removal @ $25/per trip and lawn care up to $25 per cut, appliance purchase, clothing, reimbursement or another emergency.

This program can be used in conjunction with LIHEAP and/or HUMAN SERVICES. Each Elder is required to complete an application. In order for the application to be processed in a timely manner, it is important that the directions for this program be followed and completed properly.

The Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority (CORA) in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, has been monitoring contaminant concentrations in the fillet portions of fish from the 1836 treaty-ceded waters of lakes Superior, Huron, and Michigan since 1991. The goal is to provide up to date consumption advice for their CORA member tribes.

For the first time since the program started, CORA has included fatty acid analysis in 2016 monitoring of fish in Lake Superior. Ten species were targeted by CORA based on 25 years of experience and regular discussions with Anishinaabe fish consumers. This paper reports these results and presents some preliminary discussion of the consequences for consumption advice for the CORA member tribes who inhabit the Great Lakes region. Six of the species were sampled from Lake Huron and Lake Superior and four were sampled from supermarkets.

Wild caught fish are an important link to the culture of Great Lakes Native American tribes and important sources of food and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA N-3). While some PUFA N-3 data from the Great Lakes is available, this dataset provides an important supplement and is specific to the 1836-treaty ceded waters of CORA. This paper confirms the presence of PUFA N-3s in Great Lakes fish traditionally harvested by the CORA tribes. © 2018 International Association for Great Lakes Research. Published by Elsevier B.V. Introduction The Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority (CORA), previously through the Inter-Tribal Fisheries and Assessment Program (ITFAP), in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, has been monitoring contaminant concentrations in the fillet portions of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) and lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformus) from the 1836 treaty-ceded waters of lakes Superior, Huron, and Michigan since 1991 (Fig. 1).

CORA represents the fisheries interests of five Ojibwa and Ottawa tribes (collectively called Anishinaabe) around Michigan ceded through the 1836 Treaty of Washington. The contaminant monitoring program was initiated to assist with the development of consumption recommendations for certain fish species (targeted by the tribes due to regional, cultural, and commercial significance). The CORA fish consumption advisories are thus created for and by the Anishinaabe tribes. In addition to the cultural importance of fish subsistence, the CORA-regulated commercial fishery annually harvests about 2 million kg of lake whitefish and 0.5 million kg of lake trout from the three upper Great Lakes, and many Native American families derive income from the fishery (Taylor and Ferreri, 2000).

Consumption of many wild caught ocean fish may also provide considerable benefits from consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). It is important for organizations such as CORA, however, to highlight the value of the local fish caught and consumed by the populations they serve. Our extensive work with these groups through focus groups and outreach have demonstrated the need for cultural contextualization of the entire risk assessment process, including monitoring (Dellinger et al., 2017). Many tribal members will ignore advice that is perceived as negative towards their cultural practices. The CORA monitoring program therefore works to characterize the positive aspects of the culturally-important local species. This focus (including the beneficial PUFA N-3 content of the fish monitoring program) is meant to promote trust, interest, and enthusiasm within the Anishinaabe tribes who receive the eventual advice. The data reported here support the efforts to provide nutritional benefit data collected by and for Anishinaabe tribal fish consumers.

Funding from the National Institutes of Environmental Health Science (NIEHS) was secured in 2016 to investigate PUFA N-3 during otherwise routine harvests and CORA contaminant monitoring. The primary purpose of this paper is to present, for the first time, polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) data that will be used to develop recommendations on ten species of fish collected by CORA which are purchased near Sault Ste. Marie Michigan or caught in the treaty-ceded waters. We also discuss the implications of using these results in recommendations

CAMP ALDEN DEDICATION

The Alden Camp received good participation by the

enrolled Children this year. GTB Gov. staff delivered classes to the attending children on a variety of subjects from Natural Resources to Health Care. As always the Camp Councilors offered Traditional teachings which were instilled in the youth who attended. These lessons from their elders were accompanied by fun filled games and events.

This year a memorial was dedicated to Tyvin Whitiker for his many years in devotion to servicing the camp. Tyvin was devoted to Camp Alden and its mission of instilling the tribal youth the traditions of the Native American culture and language. On July 19th a ceremony was held for the Plaque Dedication. Members of Tyvins family were present and the gratitude of his memory was shared by all. This monument was built by Facilities Maintenance and will remain at the camp reminding generations to come of Tyvin’s dedication.

Tyvin worked tirelessly at Camp Alden to ensure that the youth were inspired to be their best. His presence is sorely missed by everyone. Chi-Miigwetch Tyvin.

IMLS Grant Awarded Eyaawing has been recently awarded a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This Grant is to begin a Genealogical database which will be available for individuals to use once developed . Staff will take classes to help us learn ways to find information for the Family tree information. We will also be trying to obtain documents from the National Archives and other document repositories.

The Projects intended outcome is to have a living document for generations to come and learn of their own genealogy and alleviation of historical trauma.
