TIPS REGARDING RECENT BLACK BEAR SIGHTINGS

- Photo provided by Tom Sullivan

GTB Tribal Police had several sightings and complaints lately regarding Momma Bears and their cubs, specifically around the Benzie Reservation. Bear sightings have been more prevalent in the 6 county area this year thus far. The Michigan DNR has informed GTB Tribal Police that they “haven’t ever seen a year like this spring and summer with nuisance bear complaints and having to trap so many.”

Tips to help when dealing with black bears.

Remove Potential food rewards: Bears remember reliable food sources. Store them in a garage or shed.

☛Remove easy to access trash cans, ☛Bird / pet food kept outside ☛BBQ grills

* Keep family pets secure: This could prove to be potentially dangerous for your beloved family animal.

* Make some noise: Bears will generally avoid loud areas with human talking and music.

* Beekeepers near bear management units are encouraged to contain their hives.

* If you’re out on a hike and see a bear out walking along, just keep walking.

☛ Make plenty of noise, ☛ Talk/ Sing ☛ Make sure the bear knows you are there

1. Never run or climb up a tree! Stand your ground, 2. Look as big as possible 3. Slowly walk away, backward ,out of the Bears path.

If you have a nuisance bear around your house, call the Michigan DNR.
