Hello, my name is Courtney Yaple. I am the new Youth Site Coordinator for Leelanau County. I live in Suttons Bay and love this area we call home; I am excited to be a part of the GTB community. I have a Bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in art from Central Michigan University. I started at GTB in mid-February; I am enjoying getting to know the youth and providing a positive outlet for them to connect with their peers and mentors. I look forward to the opportunity to provide healthy and meaningful activities for them weekly.

When children have the opportunity to connect with their peers and learn valuable social and life skills in a healthy atmosphere, the entire community benefits.

Important Membership Announcement The Compensation Committee currently has six (6) committee vacancies: • • •

one (1) appointment to be filled by the Tribal Chair for a 4-year term; three (3) appointments to be filled by Tribal Council for a 2-year term; and two (2) appointments to be filled by the Compensation Committee for a 3-year term.

Interested registered voters of the GTB membership who are not currently employed by the GTB government, EDC gaming enterprises, or the Grand Traverse Resort are encouraged to submit a letter of interest to the Tribal Chairman’s office.

Please note: you must reside in GTB’s six-county service area to serve on this committee.

The Tribal Councilors’ Salary Ordinance states that the establishment of the Compensation Committee is to address the questions of compensation, allowances and benefits for Tribal Council positions.

The open committee positions will be filled according to 1 GTBC § 404(d) of the GTB Code: The Compensation Committee shall be composed of seven registered voters of the Tribe.

(1) Two shall be selected by the Tribal Chair and have a term of offices for four (4) years. Three shall be selected by the Tribal Council by a majority vote and have a term of office for two (2) years. The other two committee members shall be selected by majority vote of the five selected members and have a term of office for three (3) ears.

(2) Vacancies shall be selected in the same manner as the position which was vacated by term of office, resignations or death.

SORNA: Who needs to register with GTB? The GTB Code pertaining to Sex Offender Registration has designated who must register with the Grand Traverse Band Tribal Police Department. The following individuals are required to register with GTB Tribal Police:  A sex offender who has been convicted by GTB Tribal Court, regardless of whether or not that person is or will be residing on Tribal Lands.  A sex offender who is incarcerated by the Tribe while completing any sentence for a covered sex offense, regardless of their location.  A sex offender who resides within Tribal Lands, is homeless within Tribal Lands, or is transient within Tribal Lands.  A sex offender who is employed by the Tribe in any capacity or otherwise employed within Tribal Lands.  A sex offender who is a student in any capacity within Tribal Lands.  A sex offender who is visiting Tribal Lands.

Registration requirements pertain to ALL convicted sex offenders, regardless of the court or location they were convicted in.

Registered sex offenders who are visiting Tribal Lands are now required to register their presence with Tribal Police PRIOR to entry onto Tribal Lands, and may register up to 72 hours prior to their visit. This includes entering onto Tribal Lands for ANY PURPOSE with the exclusion of patronizing gaming establishments or Eagletown Market, and visiting Tribal Court for a valid purpose. You are strongly encouraged to contact the Tribal Police Department at 231-534-7777 prior to arriving in order to ensure that someone is available to assist you with registration.

2016 ELDERS DISTRIBUTION ELDERS DISTRIBUTION ADDRESS CHANGE DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 21st. PLEASE CONTACT MEMBERSHIP OFFICE (231) 534-7101 REGARDING ANY ADDRESS CHANGES.

ELDERS TRUST FUND DIRECT DEPOSIT • If you have not already signed up for direct deposit of your elders distribution checks, Friday SEPTEMBER 2nd is the deadline to sign up for a direct deposit of your 2016 elders distribution and all future elders distribution checks. The form must be received in our office by September 2.

• This deadline (September 2) also applies to those that are currently signed up for direct deposit and wish to change the bank information.

• Please Note: If you do not have a valid address on file with the membership office, your elders distribution direct deposit will be suspended until a valid address is received in the Membership Office.

• If you need to change the information for your current direct deposit, please submit a new Direct Deposit Agreement form. To request one, you may call Christina Loucks at (231)534-7131. This form is also available on www.gtbindians.org.

• Once completed, the Direct Deposit Agreement form must be mailed in or dropped off at the Government Accounting building. Faxes will not be accepted.

• If you wish to cancel your direct deposit, you need to submit this request in writing to the Government Accounting office or fill out the Direct Deposit Cancellation form. If not using the form, please write that you wish to cancel your elders distribution direct deposit, sign, date, and include tribal id number and/ or social security number. The deadline to cancel your current direct deposit is Wednesday, September 21st.

2015 Annual Drinking Water Report Violations: = 0 The Peshawbestown water system performs bacteriological and water chemistry sampling every month or as required by the (EPA) Environmental Protection Agency.

The samples are taken to SOS Laboratories in Traverse City, MI for analyses. Reports are sent to the Peshawbestown water system for review and then sent to the EPA for monthly compliance.

I'm pleased to report that our drinking water is safe and meets all federal and state requirements.

During 2015, your tap water met all U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) drinking water safety standards. The Peshawbestown community water system routinely monitors for contaminants in your drinking water according to Federal and State laws. The table below shows the results of our monitoring for the period of January 1st to December 31st, 2015.

Where does my water come from?

Your water supply is from groundwater. Our community water system consists of three wells that provide water to our system. These wells are located within the reservation area and produce between 115 to 230 gallons/minute.

Why are their contaminants in my drinking water?

All sources of drinking water are subject to potential contamination by substances that are naturally occurring or man made. These substances can be microbes, inorganic or organic chemicals and radioactive substances. All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

Do I need to take special precautions?

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immune-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by cryptosporidium and other microbiological contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

MCL’s are set at very stringent levels. To understand the possible health effects described for many regulated constituents, a person would have to drink 2 liters of water every day at the MCL level for a lifetime to have a one-in-a-million chance of having the described health effect.

Source water assessment We have a source water protection delineation and plan available at the Tribal Water Utilities office that provides more information such as potential sources of contamination. Water Quality Data Table In the following table you will find terms and abbreviations you may not be familiar with. To Help you better understand these terms we have provided the following definitions. The Safe Drinking Water Act identifies a number of chemicals and microorganisms that are found in drinking water supplies. These substances can be classified in the following groups: Inorganic Contaminants: This group is composed mainly of heavy metals such as lead, copper, arsenic etc. They can enter the water supply naturally, from some mining runoff or industrial discharges.

Organic Contaminants: These contaminants are grouped into two categories Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) and Synthetic Organic Compounds (SOC’s). They include such compounds as Benzene, Styrene etc. They include herbicides and insecticides that are used in agriculture solvents in industrial and other compounds. There are 21 regulated VOC’s and 30 SOC’s that are required to be analyzed.

Radioactive Contaminants: Most of these substances occur naturally in ground water but can also come from nuclear power plants and some mining areas.

Microbial Contaminants: Include bacteria and viruses which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

Terms and abbreviations associated with water samples Parts per million (ppm) or Milligrams per liter (mg/l) - one part per million corresponds to one minute in two years or a single penny in $10,000.

Parts per billion (ppb) or Micrograms per liter - one part per billion corresponds to one minute in 2,000 years, or a single penny in $10,000,000.

Marina and LSC Update

The GTB Economy meeting was held Tuesday, May 31st at LSC and Thursday, June 2nd at TCC. The meeting discussed achievable revenue and spending for construction of the Marina and new LSC building. It was stated that the new Marina would not effect per-capita and provide six new job positions for the GTB. The market for Marina docking is in high demand currently in Grand Traverse county. So much so that a new marina is thought to fill up quickly. Some boat owners will wait years for a slot to open at a local marina and for their ticket to dock to be instated. These tickets are generally expensive and nonrefundable. The opening of more available docking space is sure to turn up a profit for the Grand Traverse Band. Accompanying the new marina would be the proposed newly remodeled LSC.

The remodel of the Leelanau Sands Casino will provide a certainty of more space for gaming support staff, restaurant staff, and room for larger performing venues. All these opportunities point toward potential profit and to new job positions. This in conjunction with the marina clientele, could be a new path for future revenue and expansion. With both of these enterprises collaborating with one another it is thought to be a way of bringing boaters in off the water to try their luck at gaming promotions, an eventful night out, or simply for a bite to eat.

ACTS OF HEROISM Shout Out to GTB Member Aiden Mitchell who was quick to think without panic and use the techniques he learned at school for fire from Frankfort Fire Department, when on Sunday May 8th soon after a fire was started in the woodstove a nearby aerosol can exploded due to the heat. I am so proud of Aiden for looking out for our elderly aunt’s and my sister’s safety and making sure they were warm and taken care of.Thank you Aiden! So very proud of you! Aunty Laney.

On 6/11 at approximately 1040pm, A Tribal Elder was attending an event in the LSC Showroom, when he suffered a Medical Emergency. Entertainment and Maintenance staff immediately called for Security to the Showroom, where they discovered the man had suffered a heart attack.

Lifesaving measures began immediately on this individual, with Security EMT Mark Galla and other Security Staff, performing CPR and administering an AED device, until more help arrived. The man was transported to Munson Medical Center by ambulance, where he is making good progress to recovery.

Because of the training and the quick response of the Security Officers, a Tribal Elder will be able to see tomorrow. And it is with great pleasure, that the Security Management Team wishes to Thank these Officers for a job well done. Security Officers Richard McGrath, Officer Chris Stoll, Officer Erik Sleder, EMT/Officer Mark Galla, and Supervisor Robert Portser… on behalf of the Security Management and the community, we would like to say “Thank You”… for saving one of our own.

Welcome Our New Tribal Council !

Friday, June 3rd marked the entrance of a new chapter in the GTB tribal council. Four new council members were elected to include Tribal Chairman Thurlow Sam McClellan , council Vice Chair Kimberly Vargo, Secretary Jane A. Rohl, returning incumbent Treasurer David Arroyo, and council member Percy Bird, Jr. They will accompany existing Tribal Councilors Mark L. Wilson, and Frank Wilson.

The ceremony kicked off with a song from GTB Community Drum, and the presentation of the colors from Eagletown American Legion Post 120. This was followed with a prayer from retired pastor Tom John. Some kind words were shared in an exit statement from former tribal council member Tom Shomin, who thanked the GTB for all the support over the years and looked forward to “starting the next chapter in life.” The former councilors were presented with Pendleton blankets in honor of their service to the tribe. Judge Wanageshik then took the stage to swear the elected council into service. Each member swearing to, “honor our ancestors and strive to empower the well being of our present and future members.”

Each newly elected official was then given a moment to share a short acceptance speech regarding their newly appointed positions, and the responsibilities that coincide with them. Each member of council was ecstatic to be given the great honor to serve the members of the Grand Traverse band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. After the ceremony, the council met for a photo opportunity, and to Re-hang photos of former council chairman at the GTB administrations hallway leading into council chambers.

Gneejawnisananik “Our Children's Camp” Is an experiential learning summer camp for GTB girls & boys who will come together to celebrate their Native heritage and culture while having fun as they are challenged to follow the teachings of the seven Grandfathers’.

To provide Learning & Recreational experience’s in a culturally-based setting where children can explore cultural values, social relationships in a safe non-judgmental nurturing environment. Recreational programs offer sports, games, swimming and in a fun-competitive format. All activities are age specific. Creative expression and planning skills are encouraged in our craft workshops.

Counselors In order to provide positive role models staff are selected and trained to model outstanding qualities for our campers. They are experienced and committed to helping our children to flourish mentally, physically and spiritually.

Counselors work with each camper to develop goals while giving encouragement and support along the way. Counselors were selected to be part of camp because they are friendly, have a genuine love of children and value Native American cultural and heritage.

The camp is an indoor/outdoor facility with showers and indoor toilets, an indoor meeting area and mess hall. The camp has cabins for the campers to sleep in. It has a fire pit, nature trails, small creek, cultural workshops and programs. “Our Children’s Camp” is for GTB Youth ages 8 to 14 years old living in the six county service area of the GTB which include the counties of, Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Grand Traverse, Leelanau and Manistee.

Campers are assigned to clans of no more than 10 campers. Each clan is led by individual counselors who are responsible for ensuring the well-being of each camper and keeping the fun-level high!

Rita Bear Gray (Canadian Cree) lives in Seattle Washington.

She is the mother of two beautiful daughters, and a spiritual mentor for many. Rita is an international speaker and has served with many organizations. She was with Wiconi International where she led women’s ministry. For the International Reconciliation Coalition (IRC) she served at the Northwest Field Coordinator.

As a Native woman following the Jesus Way she was set free to dance in worship, honoring her Native culture, and to help others find this freedom also.

She has spoken at churches and conferences over the years sharing her faith in Jesus and helping others to find faith also. She has led many retreats for women bringing a message of healing through forgiveness and worship.

Also ​4 Fires​ will be bringing their drum for some singing and dancing.

This trip will be a leisurely guided canoe float and an excellent opportunity for you to see the real Boardman River as it lazily winds it’s way through the plains area of the upper Boardman Valley.

Plan on arriving at Parking Location at 9:30 am. You will leave your vehicle at the Brown Bridge parking area and a shuttle will take you to “Shecks Campground”, the canoe launch site.

Directions to Parking Location: Head south on Garfield Road, turn left (East) on Brown Bridge Rd. this is directly opposite the East River Road sign. You’ve gone too far on Garfield if you reach the little village of Mayfield.

Continue on Brown Bridge Rd to the canoe access parking site, watch for signs.

The Natural Resources Department would again like to invite interested Tribal Members to float the newly restored Boardman River. For over 90 years, this section of the river has been trapped behind a structure once known as the Brown Bridge Dam. This trip will be a leisurely guided canoe float. We are making arrangements to have experienced canoeists and knowledgeable project staff attend to each small group.

This is an excellent opportunity for you to see the real Boardman River as it lazily winds its’ way through the plains area of the upper Boardman Valley.

2 excursions are being offered - pick your favorite time and reserve your canoe!

(We seriously do need to know who will be joining us on these dates so we will be able to plan a successful adventure. Please RSVP no later than the Friday before the trip date.)

August 3rd August 10th You should plan on arriving at the canoe launch site at 9:30 am. We estimate that the float time on the river will take 2 1/2 hours.

We will have you leave your car at the Brown Bridge parking area and a shuttle will take you to “Shecks Campground”, the canoe launch site. In this way your car will be at the end of the trip. We recommend you enter the area off Garfield Road.

Heading south on Garfield, turn left on Brown Bridge Road, this is directly opposite the East River Road sign (you’ve gone too far on Garfield if you reach the little town of Mayfield). Proceed on the gravel Brown Bridge Road and watch for the canoe access parking signs. The Parking site will be less than a mile from Garfield Road. We will shuttle you to the launch site from the parking area.

The launch site offers access to porta-jon facilities.

This is a rustic area so please come dressed accordingly.

GTB Unity Group planting at Brown Bridge

On Wednesday May 25th from 5-8pm GTB NRD staff facilitated tree planting at the old Brown Bridge dam site at the request of GTB Unity Youth Group staff. We planted over 100, 2-3 foot tall Cedar trees along the north bank of the river and near a small wetland complex in the bottomlands.

This effort was made possible by 14 Unity Group students, 3 GTB Education staff, 1 Tribal Elder, 3 NRD staff , and assistance from our OMB department. Thank you to all! - Frank Dituri

Expressive Culture Series

Nathan Barton and Eric Olson, great lakes biologists for the GTB Natural Resources Department, provided a presentation at Eyaawing for the June, 11th. This was the first entry of this summers Expressive Culture Series exhibits. They displayed their vehicles and equipment for sampling fish, and explained their role for the Natural Resources Department. During the presentation they discussed many interesting triumphs and challenges tribal fisherman and biologists alike continue to face on the waterways in the six county area.

Examples of invasive species, such as sea lamprey (left) and the Round Goby (right) were brought in

by NRD and showcased during the presentation on June, 11th. Both of these invasive fish species are responsible for the loss of thousands of pounds of fish each year.

Expressive Culture Series

On June 25th, Eyaawing’s 2nd entry of their Expressive Cultural Series welcomed traditional arrow maker Steve Feringa. Steve is a member of the Michigan Flint-Knappers, and showcased his skills in arrow making and presented his expertise of flint knapping. Steve has been making his own authentic bows and arrows utilizing flint knapping techniques for the last 20 years, and hunting with these hand crafted items for the last 15 years. His authentic bows and arrows are fashioned in the same manner as our ancestors did over 400 years ago. This is a skilled tradition that should be learned by generations to come. It is important to remember the amount of effort that went into hand crafting effective hunting tools for survival.

Can You Help Us? EXPRESSIVE CULTURE SERIES 2016 All summer long on most Saturdays Eyaawing will host an Expressive Culture Series at the museum from 12:00-3:00.

We recently put up a display of pow wow photos taken by communications at the 2015 Peshawbestown Pow wow.

We would like help identifying the beautiful people in the photos. Please stop into the museum and help us give the proper recognition to the amazing dancers.

We hosted several school groups here at the museum in June. The students had a wonderful time learning about the culture, and as always they enjoyed the fun craft projects!

Chairman Receives Proclamation

The Tribal Council will be met with the Grand Traverse County Administrator, Tom Menzel, Senator Jason Allen, and several others on Wednesday, June 22nd. The Tribal Chairman, Thurlow “Sam� McClellan, received a proclamation from the Grand Traverse County Board of commissioners welcoming him as the newly elected board chair at the beginning of the meeting. The consultation discussed the Veterans Administrations strategic goal to develop partnerships with tribal and local governments to manage and improve VA operations for seamless support in northern Michigan.

In 2005 the VA announced that it was seeking 22,500 net usable square space for outpatient clinics in Traverse City, MI. The concept is for a new medical center with long-term care, independent living, and a new national cemetery.

This project has the potential of creating up to 500 jobs in the area. A new larger VA medical center will make it more accessible for veterans in the Eastern U.P. and Northern Michigan, allowing them to receive the care they deserve sooner with less travel.

Kitchi Minogining Graduating Class of 2016

The Kitchi Minogining Tribal School class of 2016 commencement ceremony kicked off on Saturday June 18, 2016 at the Grand Traverse Resort. This celebrated the graduation of the following students; Carlos Bustos-McSauby, Maria Chippewa, Julian Crowley, Andrea Emery, Nicole Grant, Marrissa Laviola, Anthony Mcgrath, Alexander Mcgrath, Marcus Miner, Raevin Raphael, Sara Jo Scheiding, Vanessa Schocko, Mateo Stafford, Carly Wilson, and Sabrenia Zimmerman.

All graduates were incredibly excited to have achieved this tremendous milestone in life. They all appeared to be determined to keep striving, retaining this new found forward momentum towards great accomplishments. This is only the first of many. Well done Kitchi Minogining class of 2016!

This summer Kitchi Minogining Tribal School will be offering course recovery for students who need to repeat a required course in order to stay on track for high school graduation. In addition, KMTS high school classes and General Education Diploma prep courses will continue to be offered.

EDUCATION BANQUET Sally Smeltzer received her Bachelors of Science in Liberal Studies from Grand Valley State University and was awarded with the Eagle Feather Presentation.

The Education Banquet soon followed the commencement ceremony, and honored those tribal members who had received degrees or certificates in; Higher education (Bachelor’s, Associate’s, and Adult Vocational Training degrees) High School graduates and GED recipients from the six county Area.

A delicious meal and several decorative cakes were provided for all in attendance. Unfortunately, not everyone could attend the Education Banquet to receive their honors, so congratulations to all who couldn’t make it ! We wish you all the finest of good fortune, and a bright future of promise and prosperity.

Youth Services After School Program

In the constant cyclic orbit of time, summer is now upon us and the school year has come to pass once again. Infinite memories were developed by all of our children. These experiences are what will guide our young pioneers further into development, reaching beyond what we could possibly hope for them to achieve. Our objective as parents and teachers is to infuse our best selves into these children’s spirits. We must present them with knowledge in a way that excites them, captivating their young imaginations. This will inspire them to do greater than we ever could.

The following photos are mere glimpses into the amazing times these youths shared with each other and the Youth Services staff. They socialized, they rejoiced, and they grew with one another in a way that only happens amongst peers. We hope this collage can reflect the astonishing achievements of our future legacies expanding, forever growing for the better of our community and ultimately for the progression of humanity.

We thank these wonderful kids, teens, and the supporting youth services staff for their support.

Our children’s educational development can hasten them to achieve miracles.

Benodjenh Center Update Aanii, As our school year comes to a close we are busy preparing for the 2016/2017 school year which starts on Monday, September 12th, 2016. We are currently taking applications for the next school year for EHS/HS/GSRP. If you are in need of an application or know anyone that needs one for children birth-4 please contact the center or stop by.

We are also in need of another community representative to serve on our policy council. The policy council meets once a month for an hour and participates in the decision making process regarding the nature and operation of Early Head start including Home Base, Head start, and the Great Start Readiness Program. Our next meeting will take place on July 11th @ noon. Lunch is provided. Please contact Trista Erickson at (231)534-7994 if you have any questions or would like to be part of policy council.
