Interested registered voters of the GTB membership who are not currently employed by the GTB government, EDC gaming enterprises, or the Grand Traverse Resort are encouraged to submit a letter of interest to the Tribal Chairman’s office.

The Tribal Councilors’ Salary Ordinance states that the establishment of the Compensation Committee is to address the questions of compensation, allowances and benefits for Tribal Council positions.

The open committee positions will be filled according to 1 GTBC § 404(d) of the GTB Code: The Compensation Committee shall be composed of seven registered voters of the Tribe.

(1) Two shall be selected by the Tribal Chair and have a term of offices for four (4) years. Three shall be selected by the Tribal Council by a majority vote and have a term of office for two (2) years. The other two committee members shall be selected by majority vote of the five selected members and have a term of office for three (3) ears.

(2) Vacancies shall be selected in the same manner as the position which was vacated by term of office, resignations or death.

GATHERING OF NATIONS MOVES AFTER THREE DECADES.

The University of New Mexico announced that it will no longer host the Gathering of Nations. The UNM had hosted the event in their basketball arena for the last thirty years. University officials claimed the decision was made with monetary and operational appeals in mind but it appears the association between UNM and the Gathering of Nations officials had been tense for many years.

The University claims to be facing budgetary restrictions stating that hosting the event was excessively expensive. They also claimed police and security services were not allowed access to the arena to maintain a presence during the cultural event. The contract was terminated with no notice a week after this year’s event. In very little time a new venue picked up the event.

Knowing how immense of an economic impact it had, administrators did not want the event to leave Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Gathering of Nations is the largest gathering in the world of Native Americans and indigenous people. “The 33rd event attracted around 3,000 dancers from over 700 tribes around the United States, Mexico and Canada. It also brought in 800 Native American artists and craft people, with more than 75,000 onlookers. The basketball arena was filled to capacity each day. Over 122 countries tuned in to watch the event over live streaming, and millions followed the event on social media.

The event fetches around $21 million in economic growth.”

For the next four years, at least, the 34th Annual Gathering of Nations will now be held at its new location at Tingley Coliseum and the New Mexico State Fairgrounds in Albuquerque NM. April 27 to 29, 2017.

We need your input!

The Grand Traverse Band’s LIHEAP Program held a public hearing at the June 29, 2016 Tribal Council Special Session for the purpose of reviewing the past year’s LIHEAP program and receiving any comment on that program and/or recommendations for next year’s LIHEAP Program! We want to continue this gathering of comments from you with application review by the following method.

Last year’s application will be available for review at the following sites: GTB Tribal Administration Building in Peshawbestown, GTB satellite office in Charlevoix, GTB satellite office in Benzie, GTB satellite office in Traverse City, and at the LIHEAP program office at the Medicine Lodge. We need your comments by the end of July.

Your comments will be critical in developing next year’s LIHEAP program! LIHEAP provides funding assistance to low-income households, targeting those who are truly vulnerable: the disabled, elderly, and families with preschool-age children.

LIHEAP offers one-time financial assistance to qualifying low-income households who require support in paying their home heating or cooling bills. Applicants must have an income less than 150% of federal poverty level or 60% of state median poverty level to be eligible, however some states/tribes have expanded their programs to include more households.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Act of 1981 (Title XXVI of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1981, Public Law 97-35, as amended, authorized a number of block grants including the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP, administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, authorized grants since 1982 to states, tribes, and territories to assist low-income households with the costs of home energy.

For a direct grant to a tribe, an amount is reserved from the state’s allotment. GTB currently has a negotiated agreement between the state and the tribe on the number of households to be served. If a tribal grantee chooses to run a direct-funded tribal LIHEAP program, tribal programs must include a heating assistance program and/or a cooling assistance program and include a way to handle crisis situations, usually through a crisis intervention component. LIHEAP grantees may also choose to provide a low-cost weatherization program or other energy-related home repair. The allotments are based upon available federal funding, and it is important to continue this much needed program!

SORNA: Who needs to register with GTB? The GTB Code pertaining to Sex Offender Registration has designated who must register with the Grand Traverse Band Tribal Police Department. The following individuals are required to register with GTB Tribal Police:  A sex offender who has been convicted by GTB Tribal Court, regardless of whether or not that person is or will be residing on Tribal Lands.  A sex offender who is incarcerated by the Tribe while completing any sentence for a covered sex offense, regardless of their location.  A sex offender who resides within Tribal Lands, is homeless within Tribal Lands, or is transient within Tribal Lands.  A sex offender who is employed by the Tribe in any capacity or otherwise employed within Tribal Lands.  A sex offender who is a student in any capacity within Tribal Lands.  A sex offender who is visiting Tribal Lands.

Registration requirements pertain to ALL convicted sex offenders, regardless of the court or location they were convicted in.

Registered sex offenders who are visiting Tribal Lands are now required to register their presence with Tribal Police PRIOR to entry onto Tribal Lands, and may register up to 72 hours prior to their visit. This includes entering onto Tribal Lands for ANY PURPOSE with the exclusion of patronizing gaming establishments or Eagletown Market, and visiting Tribal Court for a valid purpose. You are strongly encouraged to contact the Tribal Police Department at 231-534-7777 prior to arriving in order to ensure that someone is available to assist you with registration.

WILDLAND FIRE SAFETY Aanii Community Members, Now that summer is here, wildland fires (brush fires) can ruin your day quickly. Wildland fires start because of camp fires being unattended, not on purpose but by accident, from campfires not being put out all the way. The best way to tell if the camp fires are all the way out is to pour LARGE amounts of water into the fire, stir the embers, put your hand over the now wet embers and “feel” for heat.

I know camp fires are great to sit around, but they are the No.1 Reason wildland fires start. I know pow-wow (Jingtamok) season is here so be extra careful with your fires during the pow-wows. Our Peshawbestown Pow-wow is coming up pretty quick. I know as I am getting excited to dance at our powwow. Be safe and extra careful with your camp fire during our summer months.

Build A Kit

A disaster supplies kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.

Try to assemble your kit well in advance of an emergency. You may have to evacuate at a moment’s notice and take essentials with you. You will probably not have time to search for the supplies you need or shop for them.

You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours or it might take days.

Additionally, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment and telephones may be cut off for days or even a week, or longer. Your supplies kit should contain items to help you manage during these outages. ** Official website of the Department of Homeland Security

HEALTH CARE Why do my eyes twitch?

Eye twitching is a repetitive, uncontrollable blinking or spasm of the eyelid, usually the upper lid.

Eye twitching (blepharospasm) often affects the eye muscles of both eyes.

If you have eye twitching, you may have an involuntary movement that recurs every several seconds for a minute or two.

Most people develop a minor eyelid twitch at some point in their lives.

Although the cause is generally unknown, it may be associated with: • Fatigue • Stress • Caffeine This minor form of twitch is painless and harmless. It usually goes away on its own. But it can be quite annoying. And that's especially true if the spasms are strong enough to cause the eyelids to completely shut and then reopen.

Eye twitching can also be a side effect of certain medications.

Minor eyelid twitch is often associated with lifestyle factors, such as: • Fatigue • Stress • Lack of sleep • Use of alcohol, tobacco, or caffeine Minor eyelid twitch also can be caused by irritation of the surface of the eye (cornea) or the membranes lining the eyelids (conjunctiva).

Sometimes the cause of minor eyelid twitch cannot be identified. In almost all cases it is painless and harmless.

First human case of West Nile virus for 2016 confirmed in Michigan LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) today confirmed the state’s first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) for 2016. The resident is an older adult from Livingston County and is currently recovering.

“Hot, dry summers are ideal for the mosquito that transmits West Nile virus, and this case is an important reminder to stay vigilant against mosquito bites throughout the summer,” said Dr. Eden Wells, Chief Medical Executive at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. “All residents older than six months of age should use repellent and take extra care during peak mosquito-biting hours between dusk and dawn.”

To date, 13 birds have tested positive for WNV so far this season, and 3 WNV positive mosquito pools have been detected in Oakland and Saginaw counties. Infected birds and mosquitoes can provide an early warning of WNV activity in a community. For the most current information on mosquito-borne virus activity in Michigan, visit www.michigan.gov/westnilevirus.

Residents can stay healthy by using simple, effective strategies to protect themselves and their families by reading and following all repellant label directions. The following steps are recommended to avoid WNV: • Maintain window and door screening to help keep mosquitoes outside.

• Empty water from mosquito breeding sites around the home, such as buckets, unused kiddie pools, old tires or similar sites where mosquitoes lay eggs.

• Use nets and/or fans over outdoor eating areas.

• Apply insect repellents that contain the active ingredient DEET, or other EPA approved product to exposed skin or clothing, and always following the manufacturer’s directions for use.

• Wear light colored, long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors. Apply insect repellent to clothing to help prevent bites.

Most people who become infected with West Nile virus will not develop any symptoms of illness. However, some become sick three to 15 days after exposure. About one-in-five infected persons will have mild illness with fever, and about one in 150 infected people will become severely ill.

Mild illness may include headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting diarrhea, or rash. Severe symptoms of WNV are associated with encephalitis or meningitis, and may include: include stiff neck, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, muscle weakness, convulsions and paralysis. People 50 and older are more susceptible to severe WNV disease symptoms.

DRUM PROTOCOL

There seems to be some confusion when it comes to singers and the big drum. They assume singers are being disrespectful because they’re not standing during certain songs. And it would appear that way if you do not know the drum protocol or the unwritten laws of the drum or better known as drum teachings.

Long ago when the drum was giving to the men they were given instruction to sit and listen. Then one day the first song came, it was the birds that gave them their songs.

Then they had to learn how to sing in harmony with each other and play the drum as one. The men had to learn to care for the drum with the utmost respect and never leave it unattended when brought out. The songs and drum became a vital part of our culture in all things we do.

Singers were well respected and revered by the people; for they knew they carried the songs for the people. For ceremonies, lodges, families and community gatherings and the people knew how important the singers were. People also knew when the singers gathered in the drum pit with their drums it became a sacred space and were left alone. And no one else entered, because the singers were highly respected.

When one drum group of singers was singing their song, another group of singers might be going over their next song. And maybe a new song was coming to one of the singers at that moment. And should they be standing and not focusing on their song they may miss that song.

People understood the importance of songs and that’s why they were exempt from standing and left alone, and man’s original instruction was to sit at that drum.

Although the times have change since then, the unwritten laws of the drum has not and it still holds today. When the young men becomes singers and if their teacher knows the drum teaching than those teachings are pass on them. So it’s not that the men are being disrespectful, it just that not all people know the drum teachings. And if a man chooses or the whole drum group chooses to stand during certain songs it’s their decision.

MI. INDIAN FAMILY OLYMPICS

The Michigan Indian Family Olympics were held on July 22nd, on Central Michigan University’s Bennett Field in Mt. Pleasant. It reached a sweltering 95 degrees as participants gave their all in a wide variety of events. Many GTB members were honored with awards in events such as archery and the 400 meter run in multiple age groups.

This devotion to teamwork would strike a sense of pride in anyone contributing or watching the events. Even those participating in individual events weren’t doing so for personal accolades, but for the representation of the athletic prowess of their families and their tribe.

As the day grew hotter participants continued to honor their teammates and their tribe. Many words of encouragement were shouted to competing members from the sidelines. They pushed through, they carried each other, they banded together as a strong community.

The Grand Traverse Band dominated the final tug of war event. GTB took each of the three age ranges beating out the other teams rather quickly.

They were awarded with The Michigan Indian Family Olympics Tug of War Traveling Trophy. All of those who participated in these events should be honored to have experienced such comradery.

HERITAGE DAY POW WOW AND PARADE

The Annual Heritage day festivity was celebrated on July 5th as part of the National Cherry Festival.

The event was sponsored by Grand Traverse Band government and Grand Traverse Resorts and Casinos. It was a beautiful, yet sweltering day as many powwow participants braved the hot weather in traditional dress and regalia to honor Native American heritage.

There were also stations representing the different governmental department services.

These included booths from the Natural Resources Department, the Eyaawing Museum and several others. Each station handed out brochures and reached out to the public to inform them of their service to the GTB community.

All traditional dress was quite impressive. This of course was backed by the skilled dancing which could only be possible to the multiple drum groups that were present. Food and drink vendors were on site to assist with nourishing and hydrating the participants and spectators. Some merchants were set up to sell handcrafted jewelry, artwork, and traditional knickknacks of various sorts.

The GTB float, and participants, took part in the Heritage Day Parade, the Cherry Royale Parade, and the Venetian Festival parade throughout the month of July. Volunteers who walked with the parade on each occasion were given food and beverage as compensation. This was a noble undertaking and shows the devotion of the Grand Traverse Band in representing the tribe.

During the Heritage Day celebration The Miss Wiigwaasmin Princess Pageant was held.

This years winners included Grand Traverse Band Member Keeley Two Crow and Saginaw Chippewa Member Kyla Henry . Congratulations to all contestants and keep striving for traditional heritage.

The Miss Wiigwaasmin Princess Pageant began in 2012 and the Little Miss Wiigwaasmin Pageant began in 2015 at the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City, MI.

Both Miss and Little Miss Wiigwaasmin are young women who are living the way of her ancestors and who wish to represent their people surrounding the Cherry Capital of the World.

Both Princess Pageants are sponsored by the Ogini’iande Kwewok (Women in Wellbriety).

Rita Bear Gray (Canadian Cree) lives in Seattle Washington.

She is the mother of two beautiful daughters, and a spiritual mentor for many. Rita is an international speaker and has served with many organizations. She was with Wiconi International where she led women’s ministry. For the International Reconciliation Coalition (IRC) she served at the Northwest Field Coordinator.

As a Native woman following the Jesus Way she was set free to dance in worship, honoring her Native culture, and to help others find this freedom also.

She has spoken at churches and conferences over the years sharing her faith in Jesus and helping others to find faith also. She has led many retreats for women bringing a message of healing through forgiveness and worship.

Also ​4 Fires​ will be bringing their drum for some singing and dancing.

Grand Traverse Band (GTB) Gneejawnisananik “Our Children’s Camp” 2016 Gneejawnisananik “Our Children's Camp” Is an experiential learning summer camp for GTB girls & boys who will come together to celebrate their Native heritage and culture while having fun as they are challenged to follow the teachings of the seven Grandfathers’.

Programs/Activities To provide Learning & Recreational experience’s in a culturally-based setting where children can explore cultural values, social relationships in a safe non-judgmental nurturing environment. Recreational programs offer sports, games, swimming and in a fun-competitive format. All activities are age specific. Creative expression and planning skills are encouraged in our craft workshops.

Counselors In order to provide positive role models staff are selected and trained to model outstanding qualities for our campers. They are experienced and committed to helping our children to flourish mentally, physically and spiritually.

Counselors work with each camper to develop goals while giving encouragement and support along the way. Counselors were selected to be part of camp because they are friendly, have a genuine love of children and value Native American cultural and heritage.

Camp Setting

Campers Campers are assigned to clans of no more than 10 campers. Each clan is led by individual counselors who are responsible for ensuring the well-being of each camper and keeping the fun-level high!

The camp is an indoor/outdoor facility with showers and indoor toilets, an indoor meeting area and mess hall. The camp has cabins for the campers to sleep in. It has a fire pit, nature trails, small creek, cultural workshops and programs. “Our Children’s Camp” is for GTB Youth ages 8 to 14 years old living in the six county service area of the GTB which include the counties of, Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Grand Traverse, Leelanau and Manistee.

HONORING OUR FATHERS

On Monday, June 27th the Strongheart Center hosted the “Honoring our Fathers event.” This was an evening of feast, dance entertainment, and communion dedicated to our uncles, fathers, and grandfathers. The ceremony altogether was a tribute celebrating all men who play a significant role in the development of our children’s lives.

Food was provided during the function for participants to enjoy throughout the occasion. The presenter,Bill Martell, highlighted the importance of strong male figures throughout childhood development and the responsibility of the father role in the overall family unit. Stories were shared amongst the audience, as they recalled memories of their own fathers.

Music and dance lessons soon trailed the final utterance of the speaker. This spectacle highlighted the event as volunteers took to the dance floor.

Many surprising moves were busted, finally demonstrating that dads can dance after all. The dance lessons and music were hosted by Mel and Nancy Kiogima of Night Moves Social Dance.

Concluding the dance revolution, once all rugs had been cut that is, a raffle offered some awards to the attending fathers. They received prizes such as power tools and other implements to sustain the wellbeing of their family’s household. Ensuring that dad can maintain that bothersome sink or wobbly step.

GTB tribal members Andrew Marshall (parents Heather & David Marshall) and Araya John (parents Teia and Tim Wheelock) were crowned this year’s Suttons Bay Prince and Princess. They were chosen through a lottery drawing from all area schools first grade classes. Both Andrew and Araya each received a crown or tiara and sashes with their names embroidered.

The float was displayed in the Junior Royale Parade as well as the Grand Royale Parade during the Traverse City National Cherry Festival.

Congratulations Andrew and Araya! Way to represent the Community on a grand scale.

The Prince and Princess took part in a variety of youth Cherry Festival activities during the week. These festivities included a trip to the MSU Horticulture Research Farm, a cherry pie eating contest, sand castle building, and the Traverse City Cherry Band Classic concert.

The theme for their featured float was the Cherry Capital Airport “1969 Grand Opening of the new runway.” Parents were responsible for creating the float, which included decorative cherries, a nice fabricated landing strip runway and hovering “Blue Angel” balloons.

BENODJENH CENTER CARNIVAL On July 19th the Benodjenh Center welcomed all families and children in the community to their summer carnival. Many activities were available to kids and families such as: face painting, a photo booth and gum drop tree, ring toss, prize fishing,cake walk with baked goods and a kids optical coarse. These events awarded participants with tickets, redeemable in the large prize area.

The celebration was also used as an oppurtunity to recruit children and families for the 2016-2017 school year. Applications were available and staff on hand to answer any questions about the Early Head Start (Center & Home Base) Head Start, Great Start Readiness, Family Spirit, and Healthy Start Programs.

Emergency services were also made an appearance. The Tribal Police, and the GTB & Suttons Bay/Bingham Fire and Rescue Departments were on site to display and demonstrate their equipment and vehicles. This created many smiles and laughs, fulfilling each childs curiosity on what its like to turn on the sirens.

We are currently taking applications for the next school year for EHS/HS/GSRP. If you are in need of an application or know anyone that needs one for children birth-4 please contact the center or stop by. You may also fill out the application online or print it off from our website. We will begin processing and evaluating applications at the beginning of August for the coming school year.

Native American Fish and Wildlife Society 2016 Summer Youth Practicum August 1-5, 2016 Northwest Indian College, Bellingham, WA The Native American Fish & Wildlife Society is proud to sponsor its Pacific Region/National Summer Youth Practicum hosted by Northwest Indian College scheduled for August 1, 2016 to August 5, 2016 in Bellingham, WA. The Practicum is designed to provide Native American students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of natural resources. One of the goals of the Society is to encourage Native American youth to pursue careers in natural resources management.

During the program, students will spend their time at the Northwest Indian College participating in classroom sessions, field education, recreational activities, field trips, traditional methods, and, most importantly they will interact with professional, cultural and spiritual teachers. A unique aspect of the program is the use of Native American professionals who are active in their field and Tribal Elders as teachers. The Summer Youth Practicum is open to incoming 10-12th grade Native high school students who are interested in the preservation, protection, and enhancement of natural resources.

Students must be in good physical condition as physical activities are a part of the Practicum. Travel Days are Monday August 1 and Friday August 5, 2016.

SAVE THE DATE : AUGUST 3rd and 10th The Natural Resources Department would again like to invite interested Tribal Members to float the newly restored Boardman River. For over 90 years, this section of the river has been trapped behind a structure once known as the Brown Bridge Dam. This trip will be a leisurely guided canoe float. We are making arrangements to have experienced canoeists and knowledgeable project staff attend to each small group.

This is an excellent opportunity for you to see the real Boardman River as it lazily winds its’ way through the plains area of the upper Boardman Valley.

2 excursions are being offered - pick your favorite time and reserve your canoe!

(We seriously do need to know who will be joining us on these dates so we will be able to plan a successful adventure. Please RSVP no later than the Friday before the trip date.)

You should plan on arriving at the canoe launch site at 9:30 am. We estimate that the float time on the river will take 2 1/2 hours.

We will have you leave your car at the Brown Bridge parking area and a shuttle will take you to “Shecks Campground”, the canoe launch site. In this way your car will be at the end of the trip. We recommend you enter the area off Garfield Road.

Heading south on Garfield, turn left on Brown Bridge Road, this is directly opposite the East River Road sign (you’ve gone too far on Garfield if you reach the little town of Mayfield). Proceed on the gravel Brown Bridge Road and watch for the canoe access parking signs. The Parking site will be less than a mile from Garfield Road. We will shuttle you to the launch site from the parking area.

The launch site offers access to porta-jon facilities. This is a rustic area so please come dressed accordingly.

Jewelry Making with Doris Winslow

On July 16th Doris Winslow demonstrated her experiance in Native American Jewelry making.

Doris taught her skills for those attending the event and walked them through the step by step process

of traditional bead and quill work. Doris has been creating Native American jewelry for many years.

This craft was handed down to her and now she continues to teach this skill to future generations.

Medical Plants Of Leelanau with Tracy Koivisto On July 23rd Eyaawing was joined by Herbalist Tracy Koivisto of Rising Roots Wellness. She showcased the traditional medicinal uses of commonly found plants of Leelanau County. Her goal is to inform people of edible and medicinal plants while demonstrating how important and beneficial a mutual relationship with nature truly is.

Tracy is a Certified Clinical Herbalist, being a graduate from the Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism, and Certified Holistic Nutritionist. During her presentation she explained the importance of mindful harvesting. This is her position concerning not being just a “taker� but to give Mother Nature an offering in gratitude for what you do take. She explained that she typically will offer tobacco for harvesting a plant. Tracy has a deep respect for plants and Mother Nature and believes in human and nature coexistence.

During the presentation Tracy took the group out doors on a short hike. She demonstrated the types of plants we can access right in our own back yards, or even surrounding a parking lot. She presented the group with many healing plants and the medicinal properties they contain.

Ruby has been playing the fiddle since she was ten and has been able to learn from some of the most talented fiddlers from the US and Canada.

She has been playing music with George (Jaach) Trudeau since she was a teen and he is her favorite piano player. They will have your toes tapping. Ruby plays Old Time, Country, French Canadian, Celtic, Bluegrass, and Metis fiddle tunes.

LELAND BELL: (ENTERTAINMENT) BIOGRAPHY Leland Bell is an Anishinabe from the Wikwemikong Unceded First Nation on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. His Anishinabe name is Bebaminojmat. He is Loon Clan and is a “second degree” member of the Three Fires Midewiwin Society. Leland is a Musician and Artist and will be playing a variety of music. His music biography is extensive goes and dates back to 1972.

GEORGE (JAACH) TRUDEAU: (ENTERTAINMENT) BIOGRAPHY George carries on the family tradition of music entertainers. George has played with that piano sound of honky tonk, with country bands, blues and southern country rock throughout Manitoulin Island and North Shore region of Ontario, Canada. When he moved to Michigan over 12 years ago, this was where he heard Ruby John playing fiddle for the first time and the tradition continues. George and Ruby have been playing as a duo throughout the upper regions of Michigan at festivals, venues and into Canada. Ruby is by far George’s favorite fiddle player and considers her as a professional. A lot of memories return for George as he hears Ruby play the fiddle with the accompanying sound of the piano.
