the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners, explaining the tribe’s position in its 5th Amendment lands claim issue and requesting support of the Commissioners. The presentation went very well, and the tribe secured a resolution of support from this Board. Next steps include conducting presentations and requests for supporting resolutions at the Antrim County Board of Commission and at local county township boards, then soliciting support from state representatives before submitting a proposed Congressional bill. I will keep you updated as we move forward with our lands claim endeavor.

COVID. Some tribal members in our community have contracted the COVID virus, and although other tribal members have expressed the desire to know who these tribal members are, it is against our clinic and health care provider policies to do so. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy Rule “establishes national standards to protect individuals’ medical records and other personal health information and applies to health plans, health care clearinghouses, and those health care providers that conduct certain health care transactions electronically. The Rule requires appropriate safeguards to protect the privacy of personal health information, and sets limits and conditions on the uses and disclosures that may be made of such information without patient authorization.” (https://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/forprofessionals/privacy/index.html). ooshoo Aanii – it was nice to say BaaMaaPii to the year 2020, B and look forward to new beginnings, although the start of 2021 was fraught with national, state, local and tribal issues that carried over from the previous year, culminating with an attack on democracy during the first full week of January. Many citizens experienced a welcome relief as January moved to a close, with a peaceful change in national leadership and hope for the future. Here’s looking forward to the year 2021 as we roll up our sleeves and dig in to the hard work of addressing the continued problems resulting from the pandemic!

On January 20, 2021, before the Tribal Council Regular Session, a smudge ceremony was held beginning at 9:00am in the Council Chambers, thanks to information being shared across Indian Country to burn sage at 9:00am their time, so that by 9:00am Pacific Time, Indian Country will have smudged the entire country. Smudge America was held to bring healing to our nation on the day of the Presidential Inauguration. Prayers were sent to the Creator blessing all we do and to watch over all of us. I hope you’ve received your grocery cards with no problems, and I apologize if there were any issues – this is the first time the tribe has sent out grocery cards to all tribal members regardless of age or location where a delivery receipt was required in order to document this COVID-related assistance. If you haven’t received your grocery card yet then please contact my office.

To keep everyone safe, we would like to remind all GTB members and employees to follow safety guidelines and wear a mask if inside a GTB government building, an EDC facility, and/or any tribally owned facility. This is for the protection and safety of our employees and the entire community. It is also critical that Tribal members and community members wear masks in public gatherings, abide by frequent hand-washing, and practice social distancing. If you must attend a public gathering, it is imperative that you wear a face mask. Health officials have confirmed that public gatherings are now one of the top causes of outbreaks, and the reason is because mask-wearing and social distancing are not enforced, in some instances. Please follow and practice established safety guidelines.

Senator Menendez Remarks

Menendez Opening Remarks at Nomination Hearing for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations ASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), incoming W Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, delivered the following opening statement at this morning’s

hearing on the nomination of Linda Thomas-Greenfield to be U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Below are some of Senator Menendez’s remarks as delivered: “Thank you Mr. Chairman and thank you for expediting the hearing of Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield, so I appreciate your continued work in this regard.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield, congratulations on your nomination. Welcome to your fourth Senate confirmation hearing.

It is deeply reassuring that President Biden nominated you – a diplomat of immense expertise and skill – to be the next U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations. I believe you are superbly qualified to advance U.S. interests at the UN. We are deeply grateful for your willingness and that of your family to return to serve our country at this critical time. We are at a pivotal moment – an opportunity to repair and restore our place in the world. But we have to be honest about the challenges we face, including at the United Nations, in light of the Trump administration’s abandonment of U.S. leadership.

Over the last four years, the U.S. has accrued more than $1 billion in peacekeeping arrears, tried to pull out of the World Health Organization in the middle of a pandemic, undermined international protections for women, girls and LGBTI individuals, defunded or cut funding to key agencies like the UN Population Fund and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and pulled out of the Paris Climate Agreement. Meanwhile, China and other authoritarian countries have filled the vacuum left by our absence.

And later on in his remarks saying, China’s efforts to insert ‘Xi Jinping thought’ into UN resolutions has undermined the UN’s commitment to human rights. This is the same leader responsible for what the State Department has determined to be acts of genocide committed against 1.8 million Uyghur men, women and children in internment facilities.

When China has asserted leadership – and taken on leadership roles – in UN bodies, these organizations have ceased to uphold the values and interests of the broader international community.

Bit by bit, step by step, they are instead made to reflect China’s unilateral priorities, often at the expense of human rights. And

for all the bluster and tough-guy rhetoric, the record of the Trump administration to counter Beijing’s efforts has been one of abject failure.

Meanwhile, the net effect of the Trump administration’s policies towards North Korea has been to gut the UN sanctions regime painstakingly put in place to counter North Korean provocations, and its nuclear and missile programs. Today, thanks to Secretary Pompeo and President Trump, that sanctions regime is on life support. Last year, North Korea conducted ballistic missile tests – a clear violation of UN Security Council Resolutions – and the Administration did nothing. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on how to address this pressing concern.

As you have witnessed firsthand, the United Nations plays a crucial role in the maintenance of peace and security across Africa. It supports six UN peacekeeping missions already, but there are other ongoing conflicts that also demand the urgent involvement of the UN. I am thinking in particular of Cameroon, Ethiopia, and Mozambique, where a failure to properly address crises has already generated large refugee flows, and in some cases drawn neighboring countries into active conflict.

Finally, one area I hope that you and the Biden administration will remain closely engaged on is preventing the United Nations and other affiliated organizations from being used as fora for biased attacks on Israel. Such actions make a negotiated twostate solution more difficult to achieve.

After four tumultuous, exhausting years, the United States needs renewal and engagement with key alliances and institutions. If confirmed, the world will be closely watching how we achieve this at the United Nations. I look forward to hearing your views how you would achieve them.”

Councilor’s Update

h-Boozhoo Aanii --I hope you find this month’s newsletter useful and informative. As you know we’ve been working hard all year to improve our communications with all Tribal Members across all service areas and I am pleased to report that our Communications Department is working to make our newsletters available; but please be patient, we have only one person in the department.

With each passing day, COVID-19 is forcing us all to adapt and change how we do things. For some of us that means no longer seeing family and friends every week or visiting our favorite shops and restaurants. Instead of running to the stores, some of us are shopping online and having things delivered. Although these behavior changes are leaving some of us feeling disconnected, the use of technology is enabling those of us who are adopting it, to stay in touch and complete the business of the Tribe.

The Council know technology can’t yet replace the feeling of meeting in-person, but it is making the current environment a little easier to deal with. COVID-19 will change how I celebrate with family and friends this year. If you are sad because you can’t celebrate the way you normally do, please try to look on the bright side and give the technology a chance.

We are still conducting many of our government & EDC meetings on-line using Zoom or by conference call, which in the Tribal Council case included meetings with the Attorney, Tribal Manager, weekly round table meetings with the Chairman & Councilors, weekly staff meetings, and many meetings on specific issues involving our COVID-19 with our Health director’s response as well as many other topics.

For those of you who are struggling with the restrictions, please remember you are not alone and with each passing day we are steps closer to defeating the virus. If you or your family needs help, please reach out for assistance. Despite all the challenges we are facing, we will get through this together.

The rollout of the first vaccine began in December and continues to be administered at Strongheart Center for membership.

As the shipment comes in each week we are a step closer to a new norm. There will continue to be some tough days ahead and we still need to take precautions to protect ourselves and each other, especially those who are at risk from complications from the virus. As our Health Director, Soumit Pendharkar has indicated, the virus continues to spread and is already in communities and around the surrounding areas. We will likely continue to see a high number of cases, hospitalizations and possibly deaths.

February / 2021 Makwa Giizis (Bear Moon) Hopefully, in the coming months, we will have the virus under control and be in a better place to start thinking about life with less restrictions.

We as Indian People put our native values into action by taking care of one another, checking on elders, delivering food to those in need and helping neighbors.

Getting through this pandemic is not a sprint. It is a marathon. It is about facing and walking through the virus with courage and coming out stronger than ever. This is who we are and what we do.

What we have in common with other Indian peoples and our own members is six things that seem to get us through the hardest times: Our elders, our identity, our language, our ceremony and traditions, our spirituality and our sense of humor. Of course, you already know that, but the past year has proven our need to respect and protect these things.

Our ability to survive every crisis the world has ever thrown our way is built into our culture and all that makes us strong.

These are the traits that will get us through a pandemic, and we will come out stronger than before. As we go through this new year, Council hopes we will focus on strengthening, sharing and supporting all these things that make us strong once again.

The Council goal is that four years from now we will look back on the post-pandemic years as being a time of growth and prosperity for this Tribe. I know we can do this if we keep working together the way we have this past year. Now is a time for unity.

As we begin this new year, many have asked: When will the world return to normal? That depends on what “normal” means.

All of us have been impacted by the pandemic. We have all changed in some way. Things can never go back to the way they were but that does not have to be a bad thing.

Our future can be better than before the pandemic. If we move safely and continue to be smart, we can reemerge as the community we want to be and know we can be. We can get through this pandemic together because we are resilient.

We are already on the path of coming out stronger than before. Out of fear and uncertainty, many members and employees shined. They showed courage and determination, using creative problem-solving to meet our challenges.

History is not something that fate decides. History is made by people of vision and courage. We have plenty of both. When our history is written, it will define us not by how we suffered through tragedy, but by how we persevered despite tragedy.

Even when socially distant we are still united by our blood, by our history, our culture and our values.

The strength comes from all of you. If there is one thing we have proven, it is that no virus can stop us as a Tribe or take away our spirit. Despite what we have lost, despite the grief and hardship, we will be stronger and more determined in the new year.

What is a Peer Recovery Coach?

At GTB Behavioral Health, we are currently providing counseling, case management, psychiatric and peer recovery support services for your mental health and substance use needs Monday through Fridays from 8am to 5pm. Tele-health or zoom sessions are available to ensure your access to services while the building remains closed to clients. Our on-call counselor services are available 7 days a week, 24 hours per day.

We want to know how you or doing or what you may need. We are here for to support you however we can. We care about each one of you and want to assist you in the best way possible.

Boozhoo! My name is Heather Pineda, I joined the behavioral health team in October as the director of the medically assisted treatment program. I am excited about expanding services for tribal members, especially during the pandemic. I earned my bachelor’s degree in fine arts at the School of Visual Arts and am entering my third year as a graduate student at Boston University School of Social Work. I previously worked as a peer counselor and enjoy individual counseling and clinical work very much. I am honored for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the tribe.

Studies have shown that social distancing and other measures meant to reduce transmission of COVID-19 can also lead to depression, isolation, and boredom. Many months into the pandemic, “COVID fatigue” is setting in, causing some people to relapse or increase their substance use. Here at GTB Behavioral Health, we are here for you. Grand Traverse Economic Development (GTED) Updates VISION, PASSION AND DIRECTION THANKS TO STRATEGIC STRATEGY, PLANNING The Board of Directors and company leadership recognized the

need for continuity in strategic planning for long term success at GTED. They invited Eric Trevan to facilitate a work retreat and offer guidance toward defining GTED’s Grand Vision and Mission.

Trevan, an accomplished economist and professor, has a passion for and depth of experience with economic development for Tribal Nations.

In strict observance of and adherence to Covid-19 guidelines and regulations, teams from the subsidiaries, staff, and Board of Directors individually met and participated in thought provoking exercises. Through honest evaluation and open sharing of ideas the foundation and building blocks for the GTED Strategic Plan for FY21, Vision for the future and the Mission began to take shape.

The work retreat was well attended and was a big success.

Realigning with our purpose and the collaboration that took place in the sessions was energizing and motivating. The team has already begun to implement some of the insights gained and are seeing the progress weekly.

Trevan will return to Northern Michigan next month to continue the good work that was started and put those ideas into action. Stay tuned for more exciting developments!

SPOTLIGHT ON GTB HEALTH SOLUTIONS The team at GTBHS is working closely with fellow Michigan Tribal Health departments to build a network of open communication and collaboration with the sole goal of improving access and quality of care for Tribal Members and their specific. Through this network, GTBHS is identifying common barriers to remove and improvements that can be made then working to create and deliver customized solutions. These solutions range from IT capabilities, medical equipment, healthcare provider networks, lab services and support to call center and administrative support services. We expect to have big things to share with our community, near and far, over the coming year.

UPDATE ON THE FORMER PUGLSEY CORRECTIONAL FACILITY After extensive feasibility research, GTED has moved forward to complete the purchase of the former Pugsley Correctional Facility from the State of Michigan Land Bank Authority. We plan for the adaptive re-use of the existing buildings for much needed manufacturing and commercial space, in addition to some potential new construction as part of a campus business park. This economic driver will create diverse jobs and revenue for our community during these pandemic times where some workers have been displaced. We look forward to reporting on our progress!

here is plenty to be excited about at Bay Shore Steel Works. Introducing BSSW’s new FLOW waterjet machine. Pictured is the machine and its results. Impressive! Work that had previously been outsourced can now be done inhouse saving the company money and creating massive efficiencies and added productivity and value to our clients. We can train operators in house and offer assistance with certifications and continuing education.

BSSW is currently hiring many positions including welders and CNC machinists.

A water jet cutter is an industrial tool capable of cutting a wide variety of materials using an extremely high-pressure jet or water, or a mixture of water and an abrasive substance. Waterjet cutting is often used during fabrication of machine parts. It is the preferred method when the materials being cut are sensitive to the high temperature generated by other methods.

FUN FACT: The technique of using high-pressure water for erosion dates back as far as the mid-1880’s with hydraulic mining. It was not until the 1930’s that narrow jets of water started to appear as an industrial cutting device.

Lindsay has chosen to pursue a new adventure and thusly will be leaving GTED after nearly 5 years of incredible service and dedication. GTED is so thankful to Lindsay for all she has done for our organization and our subsidiaries. The accomplishments are too many to list and as GTED’s first employee, she will be missed. Thank you, Lindsay, and best of luck on your next adventure. Leona Monroe will begin as Interim HR Director starting January 25. Leona has extensive human resource management experience including hospitality and gaming and has held the position Human Resources Director. We all look forward to a seamless transition.

anuary 20th, 2021, Joseph R. Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States of America.

Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr. was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the first of four children of Catherine Eugenia Finnegan Biden and Joseph Robinette Biden, Sr. In 1953, the Biden family moved to Claymont, Delaware.

President Biden graduated from the University of Delaware and Syracuse Law School and served on the New Castle County Council.

President Biden served as a senator from Delaware for 36 years. Biden also served as the Chairman or Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee for 16 years. Biden was pivotal in writing the Violence Against Women Act. VAWA was a landmark legislation that strengthens penalties for violence against women, created resources for those who

survived sexual assault, and helped change the national dialogue on domestic and sexual assault.

President Biden also served as the 47th Vice President of America under the Obama Presidency. During his tenuriship as Vice President, Biden helped to pass and oversaw the implementation of the Recovery Act. President Obama and Biden also secured the Affordable Care Act. In his first day as President, Biden signed 17 Executive Orders addressing, COVID-19, Climate Change, Immigration, Racial and LGBTQ Equality, Healthcare, the Economy, Restoring America’s Global Standing, and Government Accountability.

Farewell Jared!

As we transition to a new Editor for the GTB Newsletter, I would like to take a moment to thank and honor my predecessor who resigned from his position December 7th, 2020. Jared Sonderegger was an outstanding leader who constantly strove to improve the Communications Department.

An Army Infantry Veteran, who served 2 tours in Iraq, his first 12 months, followed by a second for 13 months. Jared brought an abundance of knowledge and excellence with him that was highlighted in his work.

Jared worked with GTB for a cumulative 7+ years and we truly appreciate his time here. I was lucky to work under Jared for 3 years and learned much thanks to him. Jared leaves behind big shoes to fill and while Communications misses him, I wish him great success in his future endeavors. With that, I say Chi-Miigwetch for being a great boss, and an even better friend.

Vice President Harris was born in Oakland, California to parents who emigrated from India and Jamaica. She graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College Law. Vice President Harris joined the Alameda County Distric Attorney’s Office in 1990 where she specialized in prosecuting child sexual assault cases. In 2003 Vice President Harris was elected District Attorney of San Francisco, where she created programs to provide first-time drug offenders with the opportunity to earn a high school degree and find employment.

As a Senator, Vice President Harris championed to reform cash bail, combat hunger, provide rent relief, and improve maternal health care.

GTB Heritage Library’s Winter Storytime 2021 On Zoom

Wednesday February 24, 2021 5:30-7:30 PM Traditionally, storytelling was the foundation of the Anishinaabe oral tradition. In the winter the Anishinaabe moved to Winter hunting grounds. During these months’ storytelling was an important way to pass on tribal cultural history, stories, and Mino Bimaadiziwin (Living a good life). So, come celebrate Biboon (It is Winter) with an evening of storytelling on Zoom by the GTB Heritage Librarian Francis Carew. He will read the books Oh, Bother! Someone’s Messy (Winnie the Pooh), Fry Bread, and Voices from the Ice (Ojibwe Winter tale) to honor this ancient tradition. This event promotes Anishinaabe oral tradition and literacy in children. It is free, open to the public of all ages, and you can join anytime. This event is hosted by the GTB Heritage Library, GTB Lifelong Learning, and IMLS. he impact of COVID-19 on our lives, our activities, and our freedom has affected us all. The responsibility is ours, as a community, to help stop this virus. Now we have a new, safe, and effective tool to help us do that—COVID-19 vaccines.

We all need to step up to beat COVID-19. We ask you to join us in protecting yourself, your family and friends, and our community by getting vaccinated.

COVID-19 vaccination is one of the strongest tools we can use to fight this pandemic together. Getting vaccinated adds an important layer of protection for you, your family, and loved ones.

Here are some things you should know about the COVID-19 vaccine: • All COVID-19 vaccines currently available in the United States are very effective at preventing the disease.

• The most common side effects are pain in the arm where you got the shot, feeling tired, headache, body aches, chills, and fever.

Stopping a pandemic requires using all the tools we have available—wearing masks, staying at least 6 feet apart from people who don’t live with you, avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces, washing your hands frequently, and getting vaccinated.

We want everyone in our community to be safe. We all play a part in this effort, and you are key. Please call the GTB COVID-19 Vaccine Line (231-534-7475) to sign up to get your COVID-19 vaccination.

At the time of writing, 385 individuals have received a first dose and 48 of those individuals have received a second dose.

Please note, currently the demand for COVID-19 vaccine far exceeds the supply. We schedule vaccinations as we are notified of more vaccination shipments and administer all of doses within days of receiving the vaccine.

he GTB Health Department is excited to announce the Lets T Heal Telehealth Platform. GTB is the first tribe to develop its own telehealth app.

The GTB Health Department is following the CDC recommendations for prioritization and administration of the COVID-19 vaccine. As such, the GTB Health Department is now vaccinating elders 55 years and older, individuals with underlying medical conditions, and essential workers. Each individual is reviewed by our clinical team and those meeting prioritization criteria will be scheduled for vaccination.

Some commonly treated conditions: Allergies, Asthma, Bites, Bronchitis, Constipation, Minor Burns, Cough, Cold, Diarrhea, Earache, Flu, Mono, Pink Eye, Poison Ivy, Rash, Sinus Infections, Sore Throat, Sprains, Strains, Strep Throat, Swollen Glands, Urinary Tract Infections, Viral Infections, Wheezing/Sneezing

The “Lets Heal” app allows you to access your GTB Health Department providers from anywhere and allows you to access urgent care 24/7/365. You can access care via your smart phone, desktop computer, or tablet. During your virtual visit, a licensed provider will offer a diagnosis, treatment, and medication, if appropriate. You can be seen when you need, on-demand or schedule an appointment.

Benefits of Lets Heal: • Connect with your GTB Health Department provider or another Michigan licensed provider within minutes from anywhere, anytime, year-round.

• GTB Tribal Members living in the 6-county service area are enabled for 4 urgent care visits with non-GTB Health Department providers for access 24/7/365. Additional visits will need to be purchased by individuals in advance. All GTB Health Department patients can access GTB Health Department providers for telehealth visits on an unlimited basis during normal business hours.

• Can be used conveniently by the whole family without having to travel and save time compared to an in-person office-visit. This brings added comfort, convenience, and safety during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

• All visits and care are secure, confidential, and coordinated with the GTB Health Department.

GTB Administers COVID-19 Vaccines

he Grand Traverse Band administered the COVID-19 vaccine, T starting first with frontline care workers, followed by GTB Elders.

“It’s the beginning of the end of this global pandemic.” Said Mari Raphael moments before receiving the vaccine.

We would like to take a moment to recognize the workers who have been on the frontline fighting this deadly virus, their bravery and diligence does not go by unnoticed. ChiMiigwetch for all the services you have continued providing the membership.

As of writing this article, the Grand Traverse Band has 107 identified positive cases of COVID-19, with over 300 individuals receiving their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and 28 receiving the second dose.

How to cope with anxiety related to vaccination

Don’t forget about your pets and pack a Pet Kit to grab and go if you need to leave for an emergency.

In addition to preparing a home emergency kit, prepare a vehicle emergency kit with blankets, jumper cables, snacks, flashlight, shovel, etc. Listed below is several ideas to create an emergency supply kit for your vehicle and be ready for winter.

Bundle up! Are you Ready for Winter Weather?

Winter is the time for fun, cold-weather activities, such as sledding and skating. Cold weather, ice, and snow can be fun, but that may also be dangerous if you’re not prepared. Winter storms and severe cold can bring on a variety of risks, such as car accidents, hypothermia, frostbite, carbon monoxide poisoning, and heart attacks from overexertion.

A severe winter storm may: •

Last a few hours to several days.

• Cut off heat, power and communication services.

• Put older adults, children and sick individuals at greater risk.

Consider the following steps to be prepared this winter: •

Know what to do before, during, and after a winter storm.

•

Know your winter weather terms.

•

Listen to local officials and emergency alerts.

•

Start stocking your winter emergency kits. Create an emergency supply kit for your car including items such as jumper cables, sand, a flashlight, warm clothes, blankets, bottled water and nonperishable snacks.

•

Keep a full tank of gas.

•

Stay off the road during and after a winter storm.

•

Use safe heating devices and have a carbon monoxide alarm in place, especially if using alternative heating devices.

•

Keep out the cold with insulation, caulking & weather stripping. Learn how to keep pipes from freezing.

•

Be aware of the signs and basic treatments for frostbite and hypothermia as well.

When using a space heater, follow these safety tips: • Plug heaters directly into the outlet, never use an extension cord.

Keep anything that can burn 3 feet away • from heaters.

A Job Well Done! n early December, Elmwood Township Fire & Rescue, ITraverse along with paramedics from Mobile Medical Response City were dispatched to a medical emergency

in Elmwood Township. Upon arrival of Elmwood EMS, the patient was found in cardiac arrest. An AED was quickly placed and a shock delivered. Within 10 minutes of the patient calling 911 and going into cardiac arrest, his heart was successfully “restarted” by EMS. Elmwood and MMR were also joined on scene by Chief Fairchild from GTB Fire & Rescue, who was driving by the area and stopped to assist.

Today, 1/24/2021, the patient and his family were able to meet the responders who saved his life that night. With exception to two responders who weren’t able to make it, and the 911 dispatcher who was also not able to make it. A job well done to all!

SUBMIT A RECIPE AND YOU COULD WIN! The staff are excited to announce the next edition of the Grand Traverse Band Elders Cookbook. We all have something in common, through all our memories is often a special dish we share together. Whether it’s a cup of hot chocolate, commodity potatoes, frybread, or grandpa’s possum stew. We all have that special recipe that was created with love and instantly brings us back to that favorite memory.

We want to invite our elders to help us create this cookbook by submitting their favorite recipes. We will compile them into a cookbook to share with everyone. We’ll also be selecting a recipe at the end of the month in a drawing for a door prize.

Why a cookbook? Because food is awesome. We want to have fun and enjoy it with you all.

Line-5 Update

Enbridge Refuses to Comply With Governor Whitmers’ Order Enbridge will not comply with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s orders to shutdown Line 5 Pipeline by May, will not comply with easement revocation.

G

overnor Whitmer and Department of Natural Resources Director Dan Eichinger received a 7-page letter from Enbridge’s executive vice president, Vern Yu, questioning the order to shutdown Line 5. Stating “the Dual Pipelines will continue to operate safely until they are replaced on completion of the Tunnel Project.”

Line-5 continues to pose a catastrophic threat to the Great Lakes Waters that the Grand Traverse Band and other Michigan tribes have fiercely opposed. The 67-year-old pipeline was designed for a 50-year lifespan and with multiple shutdowns in 2020, due to damaged “ATC lines” and a reported “screw anchor support had shifted from its original position” it is clear Line-5 needs to be halted. Line-5 transports up to 540,000 barrels of crude oil (432,00 barrels) and natural gas (108,00 barrels) from Wisconsin to Ontario through the Straits of Mackinac.

With threats to a variety of unique and sensitive ecosystems, threats to wildlife populations, wild rice populations, and even groundwater, it is paramount that Line-5 be shutdown. Line-5 is an unacceptable risk to our collective health and wellbeing. It comes as no surprise that Enbridge would attempt to disregard the Governor’s orders and have stated they will not cease operations without a court order.

“Enbridge cannot unilaterally decide when laws and binding agreements apply and when they do not,” wrote DNR Director Dan Eichinger. “We look forward to making our case in court, not via letters and press releases.”
