• O N N E W YEAR'S EVE of the year of our Lord, 1943, five young Army Corps officers sat in a bar in the town of Artesia, New Mexico, and, at the stroke of 12, declared with the optimism that was part of the now-extinct bombardier's make-up that on the same date 25 years hence, they would all meet again in that strange and cold, little town and drink a toast to what life had blessed them with.

Just 18 months after that date, only one of them was still involved with life and until this year the survivor had given little thought to the fact that in 1968 he would have to find his way to Artesia and drink the toast and fling the glasses against the wall and curse the fates.

The events of the past 12 months have positioned in the survivor's mind the frightening thought that perhaps the other four might have died in vain after all. That Waggoner went down over Merseberg, Germany in the violent air battle of November 2, 1944, for no better reason than a carload of holiday drunks die on a Florida highway. That Swiller and Taylor failed to return from a raid on Tokyo on that Christmas Eve for the same reason that a man falls dead on the street in Tyler, Texas. That Shanklin died on take-off from an unremembered Pacific Island the following June for the identical cause that an old lady in Clearfield, Pennsylvania never awoke from a night's sleep.

These nagging doubts frighten the survivor, for even when he was uprooted for the Korean mess, they had never before crossed his mind. • Now the survivor has never been a man who waves flags or declares loyalty to his country in a voice calculated to get him elected to public office or to impress his superiors. From time to time, he has been known to hold his breath when a band like Auburn's plays the National Anthem as the hymn it should be or when the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sings America the Beautiful in front of the mountains of Utah or when the flag goes by in the arms of three Tech students on its daily trip to the flagpole. But he has always left the superpatriot bit to others, who like to use it.

But the sudden, creeping, quiet and loud complaints by American youth and some oldsters, who should know better, about such things as military drafts, undeclared wars in Viet Nam, and the waste that they now say Korea was, have had an effect on him that is coming nearer and nearer to turning him into something he basically despises.

He has heard young girls, including one of his own daughters, speak like the only responsibility of the young in this country is to sit around and enjoy the Camelot that those four and thousands of others have died for. He has heard the young men talk of going to graduate school to avoid the draft or of protest marches and teach-ins for this and that as if the only answer to all of their imagined woes was to extend that much-misunderstood phrase, academic freedom, into every area of our life. He has seen the restless, ceaseless marching for causes and the picket lines screaming insults at the U. S. Marines. He has heard the arguments for banning the bomb and admitting Red China to the United Nations. He has listened as the other side cursed the UN for reasons they never seem to be able to explain except by more cursing. And he has seen the men back of the sheets trying to preserve their own kind of law and their own kind of order by acts of terror. And he has suddenly grown completely sick of the entire mess. * * * A W E REMAIN a nation of televisionwatchers and movie-goers and radiolisteners and fancy-car-drivers and frug dancers and window shoppers and sports buffs and church-attenders and weekend loafers and gripers because the whiskey is the wrong brand and lovers and wives and husbands that somewhere along the way has failed as a nation of law-respecters and parents. The small minority who do the picketing and the marches do not concern the survivor nearly as much as the others who can't understand why they must be directly touched by a war that is not really a war nor do they bother him as much as those who respect only the laws they personally have selected as their own laws. When this nation begins to move away from responsibility and law and order it is TECH ALUMNUS

directly on the road to the Rome that used to be.

-:- * * • T H I S WAK that is not a war concerns all of us as surely as it does those proportionately few who are fighting it in that far-off, comic-opera place with its nasty terrain and confused people. Once the commitment was made to fight it, we were in it whether we liked it or not. The only choice left was to back the effort and get it over with.

No matter how badly we think that the situation has been handled, it isn't logical or especially intelligent to walk around with signs of protest over U. S. policy when men we do not know are dying because of it. Only the fact that this war is undeclared saves from charges of treason those peace-criers who look so much like those in England during the signing of the Munich pact—you know, the-peace-in-our-time paper. Certainly, we all have the right to complain but never at the risk of the country we profess to be attempting to save from a fate worse than death.

No manner of protest by any minority will change the facts of the coldwar/hot-war life. If the protesters think they are slowing down the individual fighting men by their demonstrations, they have another think coming. The only ones they will ever reach are those who would run in the fight anyway.

The U. S. Marines have a special philosophy about battle that has made them consistently the finest fighting men in the world. They expect to get all of the dirty jobs in war and in their acceptance and the doing of them, they have a grace and style all of their own. Other units in Viet Nam and in prior wars have fought with just as much valor and success. But the difference is the expectation of the task and the lack of complaining about the doing. Soldiers constantly gripe about their work which is not surprising. But Marines seldom speak to outsiders.

And that's why nothing will reach them from stateside. They will just shake their shoulders at the demonstrations and go on about their business.

And while we are sitting in our fine, relatively safe homes during the holiday season, we might think about how fortunate we are to have men like these protecting us. And we might also try and figure out what we can do to make up for failing them so many times.

ACK IN 1959, when I was asked to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Alumni Association, I immediately had visions of (1) better football tickets, (2) plenty of excellent fellowship, and (3) very little work. In retrospect, with the exception that I predicted correctly on the fellowship, my clairvoyant batting average turned out to be a flat zero.

During my initial year on the board, we thought we had work cut out for us just wrestling with the critical problem of attempting to keep Tech's teaching salaries competitive on a national scale through your roll-call-supported faculty salary supplementation program. As it still remains, this program was the major one in the mind of each trustee of both the Association and the Georgia Tech Foundation, Inc. But there were some other serious problems beginning to crop up that obviously needed attention from us if Tech were to continue to grow.

Both boards urged President Harrison to call on them for support in his efforts to solve these problems. The president took them at their word.

Initially, he turned to the Foundation for funds to support an analysis of the Institute's current strengths and weaknesses by a top team of consultants.

The funds were immediately made available and Arthur D. Little, Inc. was chosen to take that look at Tech through the eyes and ears of the experienced outsider. As it turned out, this program was considered so important by one of the state's leading business organizations that the company agreed to pick up the cost of the survey, and the Foundation funds were never needed for this purpose.

The report—published in the December, 1963 issue of the Alumnus— not only brought out Tech's strengths, weaknesses, and areas of concern for the future, it also demonstrated an effective new tool for the Tech administration: how a relatively minor

grant can point the way to increased support from private, local, state, and federal agencies.

The report suggested immediately establish a campus planning office and with the help of the Foundation this was done the following year. It also strongly urged Tech to enter into a long-range, land-acquisition program to allow for orderly growth. When you have over $15,000,000 worth of buildings on the drawing boards and very little land on which to put them, this becomes a first-priority program in a hurry.

That year, again with the help of Foundation funds, the firm of Perkins and Will of Chicago was hired to produce a master campus plan for Tech's expansion of the coming 20 years. This study was reported in the May issue of this magazine and Tech already has the "right of eminent domain" for the first phase of the campus renewal area. THE NEW ADMINISTRATION SET-UP WHICH BECAME EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 1, 1965

D A N M C K E E V E R - cont. and Will group and the campus planning office, did his job so well that Tech's first urban renewal project was approved by the federal agencies concerned in only 10 days after it reached Washington, which has to be a new record for cutting red tape. This project will add over 60 acres to the campus to the west across Hemphill Avenue. A second phase of an additional 30 acres in the renewal area is now in the planning stage.

But the biggest change in Georgia Tech was not the land expansion or the new building program, it was the administrative reorganization which grew out of a third project, backed by the Association and Foundation. This time, Booz, Allen & Hamilton, a nationally-known management consul-

tant firm, was called in to work with the president in a program that was long overdue. On October 13, the new administrative structure that the president evolved with the help of this company was approved by the Board of Regents of the University System, just eight days after the president presented it to the Tech faculty in the stormy session of October 5 (see box for a report on that session). That same day, President Harrison presented his program to both the Foundation and Association boards and was commended highly in separate resolutions by both groups.

The administrative reorganization—• most extensive in Tech's 77-year history—will be made in two steps to allow for orderly transition from the existing administrative setup. Under the first step which will be phased in

immediately, Tech will have five vice presidents responsible for the major operational areas of the institution and reporting directly to President Edwin D. Harrison. The organizational structure under which Tech has operated since 1948 has had nine and at one time as many as 12 chief administrators reporting to the president.

In explaining the reasons for the adoption of the new plan President Harrison said, "In recent years, Tech has emerged into a complex operating organization with numerous and varied programs in undergraduate and graduate education, in basic and applied research, and in extension teaching and services. The responsibilities for properly using all of these activities to assist the State of Georgia in attaining its rightful place in the technological and industrial world of today TECH ALUMNUS

and tomorrow have burdened the existing administrative and operating structure to the point where its revision has become a necessity.

"The two major shortcomings of the existing structure;â&#x20AC;&#x201D;designed for an institution with a maximum of 5,000 students, mostly at the undergraduate level, and for a blue-sky research budget of $1,000,000â&#x20AC;&#x201D;are the inability to develop current short-term and longrange institutional plans to carry out our goals and responsibilities and the lack of specific policy and procedure guidelines to permit the simplification of routine administration. Tech now has grown to an institution of over 7,200 students with almost 1,000 of them in graduate schools and our total research budget is at the $7,000,000 level. We can no longer operate with any degree of effectiveness under the 1948 organizational plan which has been modified two or three times in the past decade in stop-gap attempts to make it fit the size of our faculty, student body, budget, and short-term growth plans."

The new plan provides for the establishment of five vice presidencies.

These positions cover areas of Planning, Development, Financial Operations, Academic Affairs, and Special Projects. Dr. Paul Weber, Tech's current Dean of Faculties, will become Vice President for Planning and will serve as Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs until that position is permanently filled. Joe W. Guthridge, currently Director of Development for the institution, will become Vice President for Development in an expanded program that will better coordinate all of the areas of development which have become so important to present-day universities. Jamie R. Anthony will become Vice PresidentController and will direct the financial operations of the institution. These three appointments were effective November 1.

The heaviest responsibilities under the new plan will be in the office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

President Harrison said in October that he had already started screening outstanding administrators with technical backgrounds in order to fill this post as soon as possible. Under the first step of the plan the following administrators will report to this Vice President: Dean of Engineering; Dean of the General College; the Directors of the Cooperative Division, the Extension Division, the Engineering Experiment Station, and Southern TechNOVEMBER-DECEMBER 1965

nical Institute; the Deans of Research Coordination and the Graduate Division, the Director of Libraries, and the Director of Program Development and Evaluation. The Registrar and Director of Admissions will eventually report to the Vice President for Academic Affairs but for the present will continue to report directly to President Harrison. The Vice President for Academic Affairs will also serve as President of the institution when President Harrison is away from the campus. His general administrative function will be to provide leadership and direction to the academic, research and related substantive programs of the Institute.

Dr. Paul Weber, the new Vice President for Planning, will serve as chief institutional planning officer for Georgia Tech, advising on the organization and direction of planning efforts in all divisions, departments and schools, evaluate plans, and prepare and maintain a comprehensive longrange plan for the development of Georgia Tech.

Mr. Jamie R. Anthony, the Vice President-Controller, will serve as the principal officer of administration in the areas of financial and administrative services and controls. Those reporting to him will include the directors of physical plant, purchasing, personnel services, auxiliary services, research administration, and both the computer systems coordinator and the internal auditor.

Mr. Joe W. Guthridge, the Vice President for Development, will be a principal advisor to the President. He will supervise the work of the director of public relations, the director of alumni affairs, the director of publications, and the director of resources development. Temporarily he will also be responsible for the work of the director of placement, the campus planner, and the campus architect.

The other top administrator still to be named is the Vice President for Special Projects who will assist the President directly in the development of basic institutional policies and administrative guidelines and evaluate their use and effectiveness. He will also participate, as directed by the President, in key internal and external relationships and undertake special assignments to relieve the administrative load on the President and the other Vice Presidents as directed.

Dr. Jesse W. Mason, Dean of Engineering for 17 years, declined the position as Vice President of Special

Projects although everyone concerned including Dr. Mason agreed that he was the best man for this position. As President of the institution, Dr. Harrison relieved him of his responsibilities in a statement to the faculty on October 5 in order to "develop the unified administrative team we must have to continue the growth of Georgia Tech."

This action brought on the faculty reaction of October 5. Dr. Mason, of course, will continue in his faculty rank as professor of Chemical Engineering.

The search is on now for a man to fill this position. "He probably should come from this campus and know it extremely well in order to fulfill this important position," said President Harrison.

The final implementation of the second-phase of the plan is expected to take from two to three years. Basic differences from the first plan will be the appointment of a Vice President for Student Affairs, and the creation of the Colleges of Science, Industrial Management and Architecture, each of which will have its own Dean. This along with the General College and the Engineering College will eventually give Tech five major academic areas.

Now I have no illusions that these projects combined have solved all of the many problems associated with a growing, vigorous technological institution in this age of science and technology. Just as an example we might -look at the Tech undergraduate scholarship program which is by everyone's admission woefully inadequate if the institution is to attract the cadre of superior students (who are in financial need) that it must have to sustain its reputation for quality. Only the efforts of many of our alumni clubs and some foundations and corporations have kept this from being a disaster area. Eventually, the Association and the Foundation will probably be asked to step into this area with your help.

And there are other areas that need attention immediately.

The Alumni Association and the Georgia Tech Foundation have proved one important point over the past six years â&#x20AC;&#x201D; strong alumni organizations can help build a better institution and yet not meddle in the affairs of that institution. Everything you have done as alumni has been a vital growing influence for a better Georgia Tech. And if this is all I have learned in the past six years (which it isn't, obviously) it has been a most liberal education.

The alumni of Tech have been involved in many quaint operations none stranger than how they ever got organized

T H E M A N Y rR O F GE;ORGE P. ÂŁIU GENESIS of what has how become one of America's strongest and proudest alumni organizations was distinguished by a series of false starts spanning a period of a quarter of a century. Previous references to the evolution of the Georgia Tech National Alumni Association in historical sketches and official school literature consistently placed the Association's birth around 1920. But a few documents in a tin box buried deep in a forgotten file of the present Alumni Association reflected a much earlier attempt at organizing the alumni at Tech.

According to those authentic documents forwarded to the Association

by Frank Neely, a 1904 graduate, back in 1949 and then promptly assigned to limbo until 1961, the original date of a petition for a charter for the Alumni Association of the Georgia School of Technology was June 28, 1906. And, the first annual report of the Association by Secretary-Treasurer R. H. "Pud" Lowndes begun iff 1908, completed in 1911, but never published, indicates that many organizational attempts dating back to 1896 were made before the charter was finally granted by Fulton County on June 20, 1908, almost two years after the application was first made.

After a series of smokers in 1896 failed to get an alumni organization started, an informal group of alumni

headed by A. R. Colcord held a special banquet in June, 1903. There were 60 alumni present at this first banquet. The group unanimously urged Colcord to continue as the first president of the organization during the business meeting. Colcord demurred on the grounds still used by alumni the world over: "It is time for new blood. Let the younger men take over and build this organization."

Obviously, no younger men had any interest in this challenge for the organization held its banquets in 1904 and 1905 without a sign of officers or business transactions.

In the fall of 1905, J. B. McCrary, one of Tech's strongest alumni leaders for over 55 years and a member of the first sophomore class at Tech (then called juniors) stepped into the picture and at his own expense held a smoker to discuss with other alumni the much-delayed idea of setting up a permanent alumni organization. The first bona fide business meeting of the new organization established at this informal smoker was held on June 21, 1906, at 3:00 p.m. in the Piedmont Hotel in downtown Atlanta. Out of this meeting came the charter petition the following week. One of the four alumni listed on the 1906 charter application was W. H. Glenn, a classmate of McCrary's (other names on the petition were McCrary, J. W. Little and W. P. Walthall). Glenn was

the same man who headed the group which began the reorganization in 1919 establishing much of the presentday structure of the Georgia Tech National Alumni Association.

The Association lay dormant during the war years from 1913 through 1919.

But, even after its reorganization as the National Alumni Association of the Georgia School of Technology in 1920, the alumni group remained in hot water. This first of two major reorganizations was instituted to tie together the alumni clubs which had sprung up across the country for the second of the school's major fund raising effortsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the Greater Georgia Tech Campaign. Conceived in 1917 but not operative until 1921, this campaign was a financial success of sorts. But its aftermath caused many students and alumni of that era to harbor a distrust of anything connected with the name, Alumni Association, for years. To this day, a few Tech alumni have not forgiven the Association for its part in the campaign.

Documents of the period indicate that this fund drive was tied to an industrial growth campaign for the State of Georgia with the tag line, "A Greater Georgia Tech means a Greater Georgia." The goal of the campaign in 1917 was stated as $500,000, but by 1920 when the serious planning began this figure was upped to $1 million. By the time the camTECH ALUMNUS

paign finally got underway in 1921, the figure rose again to $5 million. By 1923, the goal by some mysterious circumstance was again returned to $1 million, and the subscriptions had reached $1,735,121.11 which included $150,000 from the Carnegie Foundation, a gift contingent on Tech securing pledges of over $1,500,000.

The bitterness didn't always fade The key to the alumni-student bitterness towards the campaign is fairly evident in the figures released in 1923.

At that time collections totalled only $290,308. Since the campaign was being run by professionals on a percentage basis, pressure went on for payment with many of the delinquent accounts being turned over to highpressure agencies for collection. The hue and cry brought about by this move forced Tech officials to suspend this practice and appoint alumnus W. J. Milner as campaign collections manager. Milner had a better success with collections and did a fine job of quieting down the ired tempers, but as late as September, 1928, the Georgia Tech Alumnus magazine carried a strong plea asking the large number of pledges still unpaid to make a special effort to complete payments to the campaign at once. By this time the campaign name had been changed to the Greater Georgia Tech Expansion Fund, which had purchased the property for the Physics Building, Ceramics Building, Brown Dormitory, Harris Dormitory, the Dining Hall, and other dormitory units and paid for the construction of Harris and Brown Dormitories. It also had purchased property on the corner of Cherry and North Avenue (where the Aeronautical Engineering Building was finally built).

The campaign contributed $250,000 towards the Physics Building (including the $150,000 Carnegie Fund), $108,000 for an addition to the Chemistry Building and $7,000 for the new Ceramics Building. Other contributions included remodeling Kifowles Dormitory and the Shop Building, and gymnasium work. In the same report it was stated that the new Dining Hall had just been completed at a cost of $161,000. The structure was made possible through appropriations for the property together with substantial contributions from the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. ures available indicate that roughly $850,000 of the $735,121 pledged was finally collected), but the campaign itself did stimulate the growth of Georgia Tech. And for this reason was important.

The Association, in 1923, took its next step forward by inaugurating publication of the Georgia Tech Alumnus which began as a ten-times-a-year publication with Albert H. Staton, an exceptional athlete and student at Tech, as editor. Staton was the first paid secretary of the Alumni Association after its reorganization. The first issue was made possible by a grant of $300 from the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. Publication of the first four issues was supported by personal contributions from Y. Frank Freeman, W. A. Alexander, Joseph Rhodes, and L. W. Robert, Jr. In recalling those early struggles, Staton said recently, "As in so many other school enterprises, the initiative for the organization of the Alumni Association was taken by that great friend and good servant of Tech's Coach Alex. In the summer of 1922, he talked with Mr. Y. Frank Freeman, another grand man and loyal supporter, who agreed to finance the project. Alex approached me with the idea that I might try to get lists of the alumni together, and form the nucleus

of an Association. Being married, and with a young mouth to feed, I grasped at any offered straw, and went to work.

"From the beginning, Tech alumni showed the loyalty to their university, which has characterized them to this day. As I wrote, asked and sought by all means, the addresses of past graduates, the answers poured in, with the needed addresses, and with badly needed pecuniary assistance. We can truly say that the Tech alumni's friendship for their college has a firm financial base.

"The first months were spent in getting lists from the school records, and from friends and alumni, but our files filled rapidly with the needed names and addresses. Also, we established modest dues, but many voluntary gifts were made by alumni, to help finance the establishment of the Association. I wish I could remember the names of all our early benefactors, but after forty years, I do well to remember my own children's names. We also managed to hold a small meeting, chiefly Atlanta alumni. " P e r h a p s the most entertaining achievement of the first year's work was having Dr. Coon's portrait painted.

forgotten. He had come to Atlanta to paint the portraits of a few 'grandes dames' of our burgeoning city, and agreed, under gentle pressure, to paint the good Dr.'s portrait. He was moved to do so, I believe, more by the character of Dr. Coon, then by the financial consideration. He was particularly intrigued by the Dr.'s philosophy of life, as expressed in some of his pungent aphorisms.

"The sayings that most entertained the kindly artist were, 'Lots of people are killed by automobiles, but not near enough!' Dr. Coon did not like the automobile. It made him hurry, it poured forth a nauseous exhaust, it made a horrendous noise; all things that he detested. He did succumb to his wife's insistence, however, and finally bought an electric vehicle, high enough to walk into with a top hat on, and which his wife drove for many years. It must have been one of the last electrics in Atlanta.

"Another of the doctor's sayings that intrigued the Austrian portrait painter was, 'There is nothing wrong with lynching, they just lynch the wrong people!' to which we can all perhaps agree. At any rate, he finished the portrait, and it hangs now in the Library, I believe, a fine likeness of the old gentleman, and a wondrous good painting as well."

Staton remained as secretary and editor until June of 1923 when he left to go to South America to carve a successful career for himself in industry. His place was taken in November, 1923, by R. J. "Jack" Thiesen who remained as secretary and editor of the magazine until 1951 when he moved over to the Georgia Tech Alumni Foundation as executive secretary, and Howard Ector, secretary of the Foundation since 1947, came in as secretary and editor of the magazine.

In May of the same year, Ector resigned from alumni work to return to the business world, and W. Roane Beard, a 1940 graduate, was named executive secretary of the Association and editor of the magazine. Beard, assistant to Thiesen from 1947 through 1950, was the natural choice to succeed Ector. Under Beard's direction, the Association experienced the greatest growth period in its history.

In March, 1953, the current editor took over the magazine after serving as associate editor for five months.

The magazine's circulation has now reached over 18,000, a far cry from the early circulation figures. In the past seven years, the magazine has received over 26 national awards in competition with other alumni magazines.

During the first 23 years of its existence, the Alumni Association was strictly a dues operation forced to live within a very limited budget. That it was able to create the platform on which the Association has been able to build so successfully over the past 15 years is a tribute to the efforts of Al Staton, Howard Ector, Jack Thiesen and the hundreds of George P. BurdelPs who worked so hard in the formative years.

The placement service is started During the year 1923, the Association created what has become one of Tech's most important assets, its alumni placement service. Nine years later, the Tech placement operation was formed under the direction of Dean George Griffin, then an associate dean of men. Under Griffin and his associate, Fred W. Ajax, both the senior and alumni placement operations rapidly became among the most respected of all university placement organizations. Ajax, an English professor at Tech for nine years, moved into administration in 1940 on a loan basis from the English department.

He never went back to English teaching and has served Tech as cooperative director, dormitory proctor, veterans' coordinator, associate dean of students, placement director, and finally director of public relations. In 1949, a drastic budget cut formed the dean of students to return the alumni placement system to the Association. With the guidance of the Tech placement director, Alumni Secretary Roane Beard and Bob Eskew and Tom Hall (associate secretaries, 1955-65) and Mary Bowie have done such a good job on this program that it has remained permanently as an important part of the Association's responsibilities.

A key man for a key year The key year in the growth of the Alumni Association was 1947 and the key man was George McCarty, an outstanding Tech alumnus whose name is attached to many important projects ranging back to his student days when he was one of the principal organizers of the ANAK Society. On February 21, 1947, McCarty wrote a letter to the trustees of the Alumni Association recommending that the Association and the Georgia Tech Foundation proceed with plans to adopt a regular annual alumni roll call on or before July 1, 1947. This required scrapping the dues-membership concept and asking instead for money from alumni on an annual basis based on the- ability of the alumni to pay.

The Association Board immediately ratified and organized the plan which turned out to be one of the best moves that a Tech alumni group has ever made.

The first year of the roll call gave the Association little to brag about— 1,356 alumni contributed $22,550, which represented contributions from 7.6% known alumni. But, by 1965, 14,920 alumni gave $279,609 for a record-breaking 52.4% of the known alumni. In 1961, Georgia Tech was recognized nationally for "The Best Sustained A l u m n i P e r f o r m a n c e " among all public supported institutions of higher learning. The award, a handsome trophy and a $1,000 check, was presented by the American Alumni Council and the United States Steel Foundation. Tech was cited mainly because it was the only public supported institution of higher learning to receive contributions from over 40% of its alumni for six consecutive years. There was no such organization in existence at the time, so the creation of a new corporation for this purpose became the first objective of the two hard-working agents.

Realizing that—in order to exist and prosper—such an organization must have an outstanding group of leaders, the agents approached several of Tech's most successful alumni and asked their help in founding a corporation to administer the insurance dividends for the best interests of Georgia Tech.

Most of the Tech alumni, well aware of the financial difficulties under which the school had to operate, were eager to help the institution secure additional funds in any way that appeared legitimate. The insurance agents had little trouble securing the backing of six outstanding Tech leaders in the Atlanta area. T h e remainder of the meeting was spent in reading and discussing the charter and by-laws of the infant organization. No financial report was m a d e at this meeting as the insurance dividends h a d not yet started rolling in.

I n fact, the dividends never did roll in and by the end of the first year of the Foundation's existence it h a d become apparent to the members of the Board of Trustees that the insurance scheme would never produce the expected windfall of funds for Georgia Tech. Only 32 policies had been sold.

And the first-year dividends amounted to the grand total of $378.96. Cash contributions and bank interest brought the year's receipts u p to $462.37, a rather insignificant beginning for an organization that was to furnish Tech with over $1,800,000 in grants as well as build an endowment of its own of over $1,500,000 in 30 years.

The rebirth of the Foundation At the end of the first 10 years, the Foundation had still been unable to accomplish a single one of its original objectives. T h e failure of the insurance plan, the nation-wide depression, and the general a p a t h y of the large corporations and benevolent foundations toward the plight of the state-supported institutions of higher learning, all contributed to this failure. By this time the assets of the Foundation only amounted to $2,796.50. And, excepting a few scattered student loans, the Foundation had been unable to help Tech in a n y way.

I n the early forties, a group of Tech alumni—headed by Cherry Emerson, F r a n k Neely, George M a r c h m o n t and Alumni Secretary J a c k Thiesen—decided to try to resurrect a n d rebuild the Foundation. T h e advancing age and indicated retirement desires of President M. L. Brittain were mainly responsible for this move to make the Foundation financially able to carry out its original purpose—to aid the school monetarily.

T h e Foundation leaders felt t h a t to attract the best possible replacement for Tech's soon-to-be retired president, financial aid for the institution beyond t h a t granted by the state was imperative. T h e y also felt t h a t if Tech were to maintain and strengthen her position as one of the country's leading NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 1965

engineering schools, the institution would have to undergo a tremendous expansion program in the coming postwar decade. It was obvious that the present or future state support would be financially inadequate for such a n expansion, and rebuilding the Foundation could well be the first step in securing additional aid for the school.

T h e first active step toward the rebuilding of the Foundation was taken on September 8, 1943, when a meeting of the Board of Trustees was held.

At this meeting the Board approved changes in the charter a n d by-laws which were suggested by the Georgia Tech National Alumni Association's Executive Board. These changes, designed to strengthen the Foundation's organization, included an increase of the number of governing trustees from the original six to a minimum of 14 a n d a maximum of 2 1 .

Through the original charter of the Foundation, the National Alumni Association had the power to elect trustees to fill any vacancies on the Foundation's Board. As soon as they were notified that the Foundation Board h a d approved the charter a n d by-law changes, the National Association's Board met and selected eight new m e n to the Foundation Board. From that time until the present, the two governing boards have worked in close cooperation to aid Georgia Tech in any way possible.

A failure leads to success T h e new 14-member Board of Trustees of the Foundation met for the first time in November of 1943. And at that meeting Cherry Emerson unveiled the plans for a fund-raising campaign designed to p u t the Foundation on its financial feet. T h e campaign, a simple class-competition plan, h a d as its goal a grand total of $300,000 by the end of the year, 1944.

Selling points of the plan were to be the need for a Greater Georgia Tech a t the end of World W a r I I and for a n expanded budget for the use in building a great postwar faculty. None of the funds were to be spent until the end of the war. Until t h a t time the funds would be invested in government bonds. Not a penny of this money was to be used for athletic purposes, a policy still in operation in the Foundation.

T h e fund-raising campaign was given the blessings of the Foundation Board of Trustees a n d got underway immediately. T h e original goal of

$300,000 was never reached during this drive, but the Foundation did realize over $175,000 by the fall of 1945 and became a financial force to aid Georgia Tech. This campaign also served another very important purpose—helping to lay the groundwork for the Annual Roll Call campaigns which have contributed increasing amounts to the Foundation treasury a n d have supported the National Alumni Association.

The tompanies begin to catch on T h e fact that the Foundation was able to establish itself through a fund campaign among the Tech alumni helped to bring from outstanding corporations large gifts for the benefit of Georgia Tech. T h e first such gift was a check for $100,000 presented to the Foundation by the Georgia Power Company late in 1945. T h e Foundation appropriately used these funds to set u p the South's first AC-Network Calculator which was completed in November of 1947. I t was the fifth calculator to be installed at a n American university and the first to be owned b y a foundation rather t h a n a group of power companies. Although the Georgia Power Company, in effect paid for the calculator, it has consistently refused free use of the network board, preferring to pay for the time at the same rate as the other power companies who use it. Since its completion, the calculator has been used for the design of a half billion dollars of transmission and distribution systems.

Other Southern corporations soon joined the Georgia Power Company in contributing large sums of money to the Foundation although the Georgia Power check still remains the largest contribution from a n industrial organization.

Some of this money has gone into relatively large projects such as the AC-Network Calculator, Tech's outstanding Fluid Flow Laboratory, the president's h o m e a n d a promotional movie on Georgia Tech. But the largest portion of these funds has been used in financing the great number of projects necessary for the efficient operation of the school.

universities in the Georgia University System.

These projectsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;for which funds are not available through the state's budget because of custom, statute or Regent actionâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;concentrated on supplementing the salaries of outstanding Tech professors who otherwise would not be financially able to stay at Georgia Tech because of the many inducements offered them by other institutions and by industry. The Foundation also has offered use of its funds for the moving expenses of professors whom Tech has managed to lure away from industry or from other schools.

Other past projects include Tech's membership in the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies, where over a million dollars a year in peace time atomic research is accomplished, and membership in the University Center, responsible for bringing some of the world's outstanding scholars and scientists to lecture in the various colleges and universities of Georgia.

Current projects in addition to salary supplementation and moving expenses include aiding the members of the faculty in publishing books and scientific papers and in attending special conferences in their specialties.

They also include financial aid to Tech's extensive guidance and Resting program for the present-day students.

In November of 1950, the by-laws and charter of the Foundation were completely revamped and brought up to date. And in November of 1954, the name of the organization was changed to the Georgia Tech Foundation, Incorporated. This latest move was made to eliminate the confusion that might have been created by the use of the similar names of the two Tech alumni

organizations: The Georgia Tech National Alumni Association and the Georgia Tech Alumni Foundation.

A problem that had to be solved In his annual report of 1956, Dr. Paul Weber presented in no uncertain terms what he considered the major problem at Tech, a problem that he would doggedly attempt to solve during 17 months as acting president: "In spite of increases in allocation of funds from the Regents for 1956-57, which will permit some additional faculty to be hired for next year, the departmental teaching loads will be just as high, if not higher, next year. The effect of overloading a teaching staff is not only to lower the standards of instruction but also to reduce opportunities for study, research, and other activities which enable a faculty member to keep up to date in his field, improve his teaching, and enhance his professional reputation.

"It cannot be overemphasized that Georgia Tech's greatest need is for higher salaries. Although the salaries for next year will be approximately 13 percent higher on the average than they were two years ago, we are still not competitive with the leading engineering schools of the country, and we are far below what our faculty members can obtain in industry.

"In seeking additional personnel, Georgia Tech's aim is to employ the best men we can attract to the institution. To achieve this aim, we must increase our salaries substantially and we must be able to promise no more than reasonable teaching loads. It is very difficult to interest promising young men in teaching at Georgia

Tech when they can obtain much higher salaries in other engineering schools and in industry. Furthermore, our low salary scales have been responsible for many resignations of faculty members who we would like very much to have kept on the staff.

Almost inevitably when a professor resigns, we have to employ a replacement of comparable qualifications at a higher starting salary than the salary paid the man who resigned.

"We lost more staff members at the assistant and associate professor level through resignations than we gained through new appointments. The quality of our staff declined. The American Society For Engineering Education reports that a survey of 93 of the 150 accredited engineering colleges indicates that these institutions want to hire over 1,000 additional engineering teachers for the fall of 1956-57. It must be remembered that Georgia Tech is in competition for new teachers with the leading schools of the country. The much higher salaries paid at these schools, together with the tremendously higher salaries offered to men of such qualifications in industry, make it imperative that Georgia Tech salaries be increased a great deal during the next few years. If this is not done, Tech will decline in importance as an engineering institution, even if we should be able to add the finest facilities in the nation."

The beginnings of a new idea By the following year, Weber's appeals and continuing efforts to aid the faculty salary situation had paid off handsomely from two sources. The Regents had secured an additional $300,000 for the operation of Tech, and the Georgia Tech Foundation's faculty salary supplementation program was initiated with the 1957-58 year. These two items, though seemingly unrelated, were tied together through a campaign that was conceived by, of all people, two Georgia graduatesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Senator (then just former Governor) Herman Talmadge and Atlanta lawyer, Robert Troutman, Jr. In March of 1955, these two Georgia men approached Tech alumni leaders Ivan Allen, Jr. (now mayor of Atlanta) and Walter Mitchell and asked for their aid in getting a program started that could be one of the most important in the history of the two institutions. The plan, initially called the Joint Tech-Georgia Development Program, consisted of four steps: (1) TECH ALUMNUS

each school was to carry out a study of its own needs; (2) the alumni associations and foundations of the two schools were to radically increase the tempo of their respective alumni rollcall drives; (3) the alumni leaders of the two institutions would then go to the General Assembly jointly to try to get state funds increased to the two institutions; and (4) a concentrated solicitation of business and industry was to be set up jointly by the two schools to secure even more funds for the major needs at Tech and Georgia as established by the studies.

The year of the breakthrough Allen and Mitchell bought the idea immediately and began laying plans to convince the boards of the Georgia Tech National Alumni Association and and the Georgia Tech Foundation that Tech would benefit greatly from this program. Enlisting the aid of Fred Storey, the president-elect of the Alumni Association, the men soon sold the Tech alumni leaders on the concept. By that summer, the first two phases of the program had already gotten under way at Tech and Georgia. A study committee consisting of Chairman Cherry Emerson of Atlanta; Fuller Callaway of LaGrange; and William Wardlaw, Jr., and William A. Parker, both of Atlanta, was immediately appointed and the needs study was on its way. Outstanding business and industry leaders, both alumni and non-alumni of Tech, were named to head the various subcommittees making this detailed study.

During his 17 months as acting president, Dr. Paul Weber set the stage for the Tech faculty supplementation program, one of the most important developments in its history.

Every one of the subcommittees came up with the identical number one need at Georgia Techâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;better salaries for the teachers. The key to the campaigns was established by the needs committees, and the concentrated alumni campaign was kicked off in the fall of 1955 with Allen as the Tech chairman and Talmadge as the Georgia chairman.

To set the pace for this new concept of the alumni roll-call campaign, Tech's Association and Foundation trustees increased their own pledges at a special joint meeting of the two boards in August of 1955. Thirtythree men who had been giving a total of $6,984.00 per year to the roll call pledged $27,450.00 per year for the coming five years. The campaign was a success with a record-breaking $162,182.00 coming in from Tech alumni alone, compared to $71,900.00 the previous year. In addition, special gifts totaling over $70,000 came to the Tech Foundation as a result of the stepped-up direct mail and personal solicitation campaign.

The approach to the Georgia Legislature was inaugurated through the Board of Regents with the presentation of the Georgia Tech needs and alumni support to the Board of Regents in late 1955. It was completed by a presentation of the joint Tech and Georgia efforts for higher education at a dinner for the lawmakers in Atlanta in January, 1956. These efforts led directly to the increased state appropriation for the 1956-57 year.

On March 26, 1957, Acting President Weber had one of the most satisfactory days of his life. On that day, the announcement was made by President Ivan Allen of the Georgia Tech Foundation that the Foundation in a move unprecedented in the state's higher education annals had voted $90,000 to supplement salaries of members of the Tech teaching faculty for the 1957-58 year and another $60,000 for the contingencies that might arise during the year. Weber's answer to this windfall for which he had worked so hard was measured and complete: "This is a red-letter day in the history of Georgia Tech. The grants which the Georgia Tech Foundation made today for faculty salary supplementation and other contingencies totals $150,000 and constitute the most important development in the operations of Georgia Tech in many years.

"One of the many fine experiences that comes with working at Georgia Tech is rediscovering the unquestionable loyalty and support the faculty and administration receive from the alumni. In the past this alumni support has meant a great deal to the school. But never in the history of Georgia Tech has it meant as much as it does today. Ivan Allen, Fred Storey, Walter Mitchell, Oscar Davis, and all the other leaders of this fine program of alumni support deserve the gratitude of every faculty and alumni member of the Georgia Tech family.

"All of the grants are subject to approval by the Board of Regents and will go to teaching faculty. These grants will enable Tech to keep many of its faculty members who otherwise might be lost to other colleges or to industry in today's highly competitive engineering and scientific talent market. The increased support granted Tech this year by the Board of Regents makes this Foundation grant all the more important. As Ivan Allen said in making the Foundation announcement, 'The day is past when the South and its institutions can be considered the Nation's poor relations.' The Foundation indicated their confidence in this philosophy when they pointed out thatâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;with alumni supportâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;they saw this type of a program as a continuing responsibility for the future growth of Georgia Tech.

Alumni leaders who mean something

"Georgia Tech is indeed fortunate in having alumni leaders who are so intensely interested in their college's welfare that they will take the time and effort to solicit business and industry as well as the alumni to produce such financial aid of their institution. We who are on the Tech faculty of today owe a real debt of gratitude to those who have gone before us and developed such loyal and interested alumni."

The year's successful program

proved to be a great stimulus to both future Tech roll calls conducted by the National Alumni Association and industry-business solicitation by the Joint Tech-Georgia Development Fund. Tech's alumni contributions have continued to climb with each passing year.

The reason why Tech is competitive

The Joint Fund continued a similar rate of growth to that of the roll call, and by 1965 had an annual goal of $400,000 for the first time. Few ideas have ever meant so much to Georgia Tech as the one conceived in the minds of two Georgia alumni in the year 1955.

The faculty supplementation program that grew from this idea has increased each year and by the 196566 year had reached a figure of over $280,000, including the contingency allotment for upgrading the faculty. The program had been credited by both Weber and his successor, President Edwin D. Harrison, as the main reason for the fact that Tech has managed to hold onto almost all of its key teachers during the past six years. It is also one of the major reasons why Tech has been able to add additional top teaching talent to its faculty during recent years despite a fierce national competitive market for scientists and engineers.

H E YOUNG MAN grinning as he gets his first look at the Alexander Memorial Coliseum and pensive over one of his up-coming speeches is Commander J o h n Watts Young, pilot on the first manned Gemini flight and a 1952 highest honor graduate of Tech in Aeronautical Engineering. His return to Tech on November 12 and 13, just 233 days after he first orbited the earth, was an occasion for rolling out red carpets and on his part enough public appearances and speeches to completely exhaust anyone b u t an astronaut.

He arrived in Atlanta with his vivacious wife, Barbara, at 11:28 A.M. on the 12th and was driven to the Governor's office where he was made an Admiral in the Georgia Navy, to which Navy career man Young quipped, "What kind of ships do we have?" He went through the ordeal of a press conference while his wife spoke to the Tech Dames Club. Then came the speech to the students and faculty a t the Coliseum, the ANAK initiation and the dinner at which he was made an honorary citizen of Atlanta, heard November 13 pro-, claimed J o h n Young Day in Georgia, and made another speech. Saturday, more of the same. B u t then by turning the page, you can follow his schedule and read some of his words about his personal homecoming.

In his major speech, Commander Young talks about the space program and his own feelings about Apollo IT IS a great pleasure to come back to Georgia Tech. Dr. Harrison and I have been corresponding on the probability of cornering all the engineers, in one building since September of 1962.

Looking at your faces I can see that Georgia Tech hasn't changed its curriculum since I left. You all look overworked and, frankly, like you haven't slept in months. No doubt that's from the all night poker game in Smith Dorm. Most of you probably want to hear how things are going—on the outside. The truth is that outside of the manned space program I haven't been

able to keep up with the real world either.

Today I'd like to present a view for you of our manned space program in its technical perspective. Every spacecraft mission is a tribute, in the main, to hundreds of engineers who have worked precisely as you are being trained here at Tech to work—with 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration, as T. Edison would say. When you have lived with several space projects as I have, you soon become convinced that the major effort of the engineering talent in our space program is in max-

imizing mission success in order to minimize the risk to astronauts. For obvious reasons I am all in favor of this approach.

Let me review for you briefly the history of manned space flight in the United States—-where we have been and where it looks like we're going.

As you know, the first program was Project Mercury which got under way in 1959. Unmanned tests, incidentally, included the world's record for the lowest orbital perigee. In a blaze of flame and smoke a Mercury Redstone lifted a little over an inch, shut down TECH ALUMNUS

its engine, and settled back on the p a d without tipping over. Several engineering fixes later, Al Shepard was launched on the first suborbital flight in M a y of 1961. Project Mercury was a n amazingly successful program considering t h a t we were venturing into an area which contained a lot of unknowns. It was in Project Mercury that we learned how to go about manned space flight missions—as well as how not to. At that time we developed designs and procedures for insuring mission success. A lot of people still believe that our m a n n e d space program involves luck. T h a t simply, within every means that we have at our disposal, is not so.

Success is built on things like rigid specification requirements, intelligent systems designs, equipment reliability, and involved and realistic testing a n d retesting of the components in each and every spacecraft. It, in short, involves a lot of h a r d work at the engineering level. If there is luck in our space program, we build it ourselves.

These designs, procedures and techniques are the major things that Project M e r c u r y taught us. We also found that weightlessness, or zero-G, didn't h u r t five p i l o t s — i n c l u d i n g G o r d o n Cooper on his thirty-four hour "flight" in M a y , 1963. We found that if astronauts were properly protected they could function effectively in the spacial environment. Project Mercury was Dr. Bob Gilruth's baby a n d initially it involved less than a hundred engineers and technicians at the N A S A Space T a s k Group at Langley, Virginia.

From that nucleus came the N A S A M a n n e d Spacecraft Center at Houston, Texas—now over 4,600 strong a n d growing. As a Gemini pilot I can say that it is very assuring to have a group behind you that has the mental anguish produced by the developmental experience of one m a n n e d program still fresh in mind.

E a r l y in 1961 Project Gemini was begun. Gemini was fathered by J i m Chamberlain, a remarkable engineer to whom the project owes much of its success and today's basic Gemini design is unchanged from the days of M r . Chamberlain's engineering guidance. T h i s spacecraft is a n unusual research vehicle. I t is more complex and the Gemini missions are more involved a n d extended t h a n those of t h e M e r c u r y series. W e found we needed two m e n to perform satisfactorily the more complicated work a n d experiments.

Of course, there are m a n y other differences between Project M e r c u r y and NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 1965

Gemini.

T h e Gemini has the capability to stay in orbit for more t h a n two weeks with its souped-up environmental control system, a space radiator, cryogenically stored oxygen for breathing, and power provided by the electricity making fuel cells. It h a s a long-life, hypergolic, rocket propulsion system for a t t i t u d e control a n d translation in space. I t can, therefore, rendezvous and join with another space vehicle, and it is designed to allow people to get outside—for "extra vehicular activity." T h e present Gemini program manager is Chuck Mathews—one of the most technically competent, a n d hardest working engineering managers a t the M a n n e d Spacecraft Center—a place which is frighteningly like Tech when it comes to plain, hard, technical work.

T h e first manned flight of Project Gemini took place on M a r c h 23 of this year, and, as you know, Gus Grissom was the command pilot and I was the pilot. Gus h a d a lot to say about the pilot input into the design of the spacecraft and, in fact, some of his fellow astronauts have been known to call Gemini the Gusmobile.

Our flight progressed very close to the planned mission with the only problem being a shorted electrical converter due to a loose nut floating in zero-G. We were in orbit after five minutes a n d thirty-four seconds of what the T V shows as noise, smoke and fire. Inside it was quiet a n d the ride was as smooth as glass. T h e orbital speed of the spacecraft was about 17,500 miles-per-hour. T h e apogee of the first orbit was about one h u n d r e d a n d twenty-three nautical miles with a perigee of eighty-eight nautical miles.

During the first orbit of the flight, Gus performed the world's first manually controlled, modification of orbit over Texas at orbital perigee. T h e " b u r n " lasted for a minute and fourteen seconds. It was accomplished by firing the translation rockets and slowing the spacecraft speed down about fifty feet-per-second. T h i s dropped apogee altitude thirty miles so t h a t during the second orbit the Gemini 3 spacecraft attained a n apogee of about ninety-three nautical miles a n d a perigee of eighty-seven nautical miles.

D u r i n g the second orbit, over t h e Indian Ocean, Gus fired the forward a n d A F T thrusters in a series of maneuvers to accomplish a translational movement. T h i s action lasted fifteen seconds, using a ten-foot-per-second burn, a n d changed the orbital p a t h

one-fiftieth of a degree. T h e completion of this planned maneuver proved the capability of minute changes in orbital p a t h in Gemini as desired. T h i s demonstrated the capability of the type of orbital changes required to accomplish a rendezvous mission.

During the third orbit, Gus fired the translation rockets again in a preretrofire maneuver. T h e maneuver resulted in a reentry perigee of forty-six nautical miles. T h e spacecraft would have reentered in the event the retrorockets did not function.

W e also performed every inflight test of the flight controls, the navigation system a n d the other on-board systems that we could devise. I think that we put about six orbits of testing into a three-orbit flight. On the whole, the spacecraft performed perfectly and I felt that we h a d an excellent workhorse, earth orbital vehicle for all the missions that we h a d planned for it.

T h e flight was the first in which a spacecraft was manually controlled through the reentry phase. Gus performed two banking maneuvers during this period with the spacecraft in the proper attitude to gain lift as planned.

T h e spacecraft touched down in the Atlantic, on the orbital path, about 58 miles short of the predicted landing point due to at least four different factors—all of which we have corrected for Gemini 6 and subsequent flights.

Last J u n e , J i m M c D i v i t t a n d E d White in GT-4 circled the earth sixtytwo times during their four-day flight.

On this flight we gained further experience in on-board orbital maneuvering, a feat that, as far as we know, the Russians have not yet accomplished.

During the third revolution of GT-4, E d White carried out the first (but far from the last) extra-vehicular activity in the United States m a n n e d spaceflight program. I n order to do this, the cabin of the spacecraft h a d to be depressurized. E d a n d J i m depended upon reliable spacesuits for using the spacecraft oxygen supply, for suit pressurization a n d breathing, and on the ship's environmental control system for suit temperature control.

T h e pressure suit was m a d e superreliable. I t had such features as a double zipper, self-locking, quick-hose disconnects, a n d a bulky, thermalmicro meteoroid outer garment, which was designed to stop micrometeorites —tiny particles t h a t zip along at forty kilometers per second. T o stop such a particle h e also h a d a triple visor on the pressure suit helmet which consisted of extra thick plexi glass, a 25

The extra-vehicular activity life support system included an umbilical line and an emergency oxygen chest pack.

The umbilical cord—that thin gold line—consisted of an oxygen line, an electrical biomedical, and communications line and a safety tether. The safety tether, incidentally, was strong enough to haul in a baby elephant.

Ed was outside Gemini 4 for twentyone minutes. He became the first man to control himself in space during extra-vehicular activity with a maneuvering unit, which you have probably heard referred to as a "space gun." With the aid of the "space gun," Ed was able to maneuver to specific points and to control himself in pitch, roll, and yaw. When he ran out of maneuver thrust he returned to the spacecraft using the tether. He experienced absolutely no disorientation.

Maneuvering in space by an astronaut outside the spacecraft is a vital technique in the development of manned space flight capability. This first extra-vehicular activity experience provides basic knowledge about maneuvering in space that will find application in later space missions: for example, in transferring from one vehicle to another, in assembling a space station, and in making external repairs or adjustments to a spacecraft.

During this flight we accomplished several firsts: for the first time, to our knowledge, the cabin of a spacecraft was completely depressurized. It was an excellent test of the spacecraft environmental control and coolant systems, ability to handle the thermal extremes of space since Ed and Jim were up for four days.

Later in August the eight-day flight of GT-5 with Gordon Cooper and Pete Conrad set an endurance record of one hundred and ninety-one hours, and, for the first time the United States established a lead over the Russians in man-hours in space. < Gordo now holds the individual record for time spent in space. What is more important, we have the assurance that we can endure in space for eight days —with no significant effects on the crew. This is the amount of time proposed for our first lunar missions.

The fuel cells, which were flown for the first time on Gemini 5, were a resounding success. As you probably know, the fuel cell works on a prin26

ciple which is the reverse of electrolysis—bringing H. and 0 2 together to produce H 2 0 and electricity. For longer flights, fuel cells have a significant weight-saving advantage over batteries of about two to one. The fuel cell is one of the key design factors in our lunar Apollo spacecraft because it would take a tremendous booster to haul heavy batteries to the moon and back—and that is not to say our Saturn C-5 lunar booster is small by any means.

Rendezvous in space is our next major objective in Project Gemini, for it is critically important to the Apollo lunar mission. The technique we will use on our initial rendezvous flight is relatively straight forward in concept.

After launching, the spacecraft will be placed into a catch-up orbit below and parallel to the target's orbit. At this time the spacecraft will be between 1,100 and 6,000 miles behind the target. The spacecraft's lower orbit with a higher velocity and shorter orbital period will cause the spacecraft to catch up with the rendezvous target.

At a predetermined position relative to the target, the spacecraft will make a thrusting maneuver to begin the transfer trajectory. During this transfer phase, a number of small velocity corrections will be made. The Gemini on-board computer will calculate these velocity changes using on-board radar data and the inertial platform and will cleverly solve, faster than real time, some orbital mechanics, linearized, differential equations. The braking end of the terminal phase of the rendezvous will be based on a combination of radar data and the crew's visual observation of the target.

Gemini 5 was the first spacecraft to carry the radar set and the rendezvous program in the on-board computer. In order to test these systems in flight, a rendezvous evaluation pod was carried in the spacecraft. It weighed seventy-seven pounds and carried flashing strobe lights and a radar transponder. Pete Conrad planned to eject the pod from the spacecraft at a predetermined time. Then Gordo and Pete would perform a series of maneuvers to put the spacecraft in position with the rendezvous evaluation pod as the target. Radar measurements were to be taken, computations and maneuvers performed, and the rendezvous completed, providing a valid test of the entire system.

The pod was ejected, but, as you know the entire effort was abandoned shortly afterwards, when a cryogenic

oxygen heater failed, requiring (we thought at the time) the computer, radar, and platform to be shut down to minimize electrical load. However, twenty-three minutes of rendezvous evaluation pod radar data were recorded. A specially configured transponder was set up at Cape Kennedy and tracked successfully at extraordinary ranges.

A rendezvous with an imaginary target was successfully performed on Gemini 5 using a series of four maneuvers based on ground computations.

In addition to the dropping of the oxygen pressure for the fuel cell 02 supply, other difficulties encountered in the GT-5 flight included faulty attitude thrusters, and accumulation of water from the fuel cell, which was in danger of exceeding the on-board storage capacity. This necessitated powering-down the spacecraft for periods to limit the amount of water produced in the power generating process.

Both these difficulties placed limitations on some of the experiments that were to be performed on the flight.

But in spite of these problems, the GT-5 crew carried out nearly all the scheduled experiments and mission objectives.

One of the main purposes of this flight was to study the effect of eight days in space on the pilots and this was achieved. Extensive medical tests have shown that Gordo and Pete are both in excellent physical condition. I think their performance on their exhaustive tour to Greece, Turkey, and Africa has shown to the world that this is the case.

As you know, the planned launch of GT-6 on October 25 with Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford was scrubbed when the Agena target vehicle failed to achieve orbit. Gus and I were the backup crew on that flight and, needless to say, we were all very disappointed.

We hope to put the GT-6 manned spacecraft in orbit while the GT-7 manned spacecraft is in its 14-day mission. For the purpose of the GT-6 mission, the GT-7 spacecraft will serve as the rendezvous target. The GT-7 spacecraft will be equipped with a radar transponder, acquisition flashing lights, and other minor modifications.

GT-7 will be placed in a one hundred and sixty-one nautical-mile, circular orbit. GT-6 lift-off will be the same as it would have been with Agena. Nominal rendezvous will be the same as it would have been with Agena. Nominal rendezvous will be efTECH ALUMNUS

fected on the fourth orbit of GT-6, although the rendezvous may go as late as the sixteenth orbit. Although the two spacecraft will not be able to dock, there is no foreseeable problem in staying in close proximity. They will come as close as had been planned for Agena, except for docking. Each spacecraft will do station-keeping on the other very much like formation flying airplanes. We feel this will demonstrate a very real potential rescue capability with two space vehicles.

There will be no significant constraints imposed on the GT-7 mission.

It will be carried out as currently planned. GT-7 will be the maximumduration mission for the design—open ended through fourteen days. This flight will permit evaluation of the effects of long duration spaceflight.

Some nineteen experiments have been planned for the GT-7 mission in support of future flights. The key to the GT-7/6 mission—we call it the "Spirit of 76"—will be the launch pad 19 turn around. It will require a tremendous performance by the Cape Kennedy engineers and technicians, NASA, the many contractors, and the Air Force to clean up the pad, install and properly test the GT-6 Gemini booster and spacecraft, and launch it ten days after GT-7 has lifted off. The morale of these men for doing this job is very high, and barring unforseen damage to the pad, unexpected major or component failures we should make it with time to spare.

Following GT-7/6, we will have five additional Gemini flights. These will involve further extra-vehicular operations and will investigate several techniques for rendezvous. There will also be a continuing program of medical and scientific experiments, all designed to support and provide operational experience for our moon program.

Project Apollo will have sufficient energy for deep-space operations. The development of the spacecraft and launch vehicle for the lunar flight is proceeding on schedule. Flight testing of boilerplate Apollo spacecraft and early model Saturn launch vehicles has begun. Testing of the Apollo launch escape system at White Sands Missile Range is nearing completion.

signed to fly three astronauts to the moon, and following a two-man lunar surface exploration, return all three safely to the earth's surface. The first lunar landing is scheduled to take place by 1970, and technically is an exciting challenge to many engineers all over the country. I saw an article the other day by an eminent scientist who said we would not get anyone back from the moon before the turn of the century. Fortunately, no one has told the engineers on the Apollo Project.

I'll bet we make it before 1970, and I'm betting a lot more than money on this one.

During Project Apollo, we will learn more about the moon's composition and environment. The moon is a big place, a lot of square miles, none of it under water, and it will probably require many trips and lunar bases before we explore it in the detail that we would like.

After Project Apollo, there will be other manned missions, to nearby planets. Please note that all these missions will require engineers. We are just now beginning to explore these planets, having made one unmanned probe of Venus, and a successful flyby of Mars. I can predict manned exploration of the planets. I don't know when, but it could be and probably will be done sooner than our present time tables predict. The first manned fly-by missions to Venus or Mars are

being studied for the mid-1970's. But concentrated development of high energy propulsion systems or other technical breakthroughs could accelerate this schedule.

Someone has predicted our first manned landing on Mars or one of its moons will wait until the 1980's; this type of prediction is based on present technology. What will our technology be in 1-975? I don't know anyone who can, for certain, guess right on that.

One could almost guarantee, however, that there will be technical advances that we haven't even imagined yet!

Who can safely say that the year 2000 will not find man on his way toward manned exploration of the stars? I believe this is one of the technical challenges of the next century.

Our future is indeed filled with exciting prospects. As we look forward to this future, we can remember the words of Dr. Robert Goddard, the father of American rocketry who stated: "It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today, and the reality of tomorrow."

To which I will be bold enough to predict that these realities of tomorrow will be developed by you all—the engineers of tomorrow. I wish you every success in your endeavors. They certainly won't be easy, but they will surely be interesting and rewarding.

ALL S=fi ONS HE MACHINE AGE came alive as the professors talked: an age in which one machine begets another within a finite number of months, and where one speaks of generations of computers and laboratory machines; an age in which engineers must maintain their ability of self-renewal to keep abreast of their own inventions.

Then an architect took the lecturn and said that it is indeed possible for man to create an orderly and decent environment for himself, but the men who are especially trained to do this, the architects, are going to have to take the initiative.

Finally, there was both comic relief and pathetic commentary provided by a presentation of what the Theatre of the Absurd has to say about the nakedness of man standing amofig his wonderful machineries.

This was the Sixth Alumni Institute: a lively, all-day session held October 29 as part of Homecoming activities.

Leading off the program was Dr. William Atchison, chief of Tech's Rich Electronic Computer Center who talked about the "Computer As An Intellectual Tool." He said that where-

as people used to be excited about how fast a computer could calculate, the big interest now is in applying computers to non-arithmetic tasks: in designing machinery, translating books and journals from one language to another, and in storing on magnetic tape the contents of a library so that information is instantly available when a question is asked. He mentioned how computers can be used to teach courses and noted that "there is no loss of face if you ask a computer a silly question."

Dr. Atchison stated that there are many things that, with computers, are technically possible. The important point is that there be men capable of using them to the best advantage.

Dr Arnold Ducoffe, director of the School of Aerospace Engineering, followed with a discussion of how the rate at which the world is changing is definitely some function of engineering, and, how at the same time, these revolutionary changes are creating a need for still more engineering accomplishments. He illustrated his points with facts from the aerospace industry where the accomplishments of technology have been most dramatic in

terms of speed, power, and size. The wingspan of the newest Lockheed transport, the C5A, will be greater than the distance of flight of the Wright Brothers' plane. The payload of the Vanguard rocket of 1958 was 3.25 pounds â&#x20AC;&#x201D; that of the 1965 Titan, 7,500 pounds.

In this fantastic world of advanced engineering, the Ph.D. has a half-life of just about ten years, he said very matter-of-factly, meaning that approximately fifty percent of what he will need to know at the end of the decade is completely unknown today.

He explained that the problem of obsolescence is a major reason that engineering schools today are no longer emphasizing "how to put something together according to present technology." Instead, they concentrate on theory, on "why something is true, in looking for the reason behind a phenomena." While a student may specialize in "a tiny piece of aerodynamics," he must have a thorough knowledge of math, physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, engineering mechanics, etc. "No longer do we just have to worry about the masses of air that pass over the wingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;we have to TECH ALUMNUS

worry about what the molecules are doing."

"Engineers can no longer just work — they have got to read, study, and keep abreast of the latest developments."

"The books, literature, and reports an engineer must read today to stay abreast the flight of present technology are," he said, "staggering compared with what was required just twenty years ago." "What you say today," he commented laconically, "has to be very carefully planned so that what you say tomorrow won't be obsolete.

"Our average faculty member who works fifty to sixty hours a week, spends at least fifteen percent of his time in the library."

In elaborating on the importance of theory in engineering today, he explained that it used to be that engineers could get along fairly well by employing the practical method of trial and error. Little theoretical understanding was needed. If something worked—fine, if not—then retarild it.

Later it was the fashion to test practical ideas in the laboratory, but, unfortunately, there are many things today that cannot be simulated in the lab. Outer space is one of these. Man dares to explore space on the basis of his theoretical understanding of the phenomena he will face.

Like Dr. Atchison, Dr. Ducoffe emphasized in his remarks that it will 30

be necessary in the modern world of technology to continue to train people at higher and higher levels. "But with all this technology we must make sure we guide technology—that it doesn't guide us."

Architect and alumnus, John Portman began his talk by noting that our "entire intellectual world is under attack—we are entering a new age," but that "transition is the flagship of opportunity."

This new world, he said, "is calling for a new kind of architect—an architect that must demand and take charge of development. The architects, must get ahead of growth and become initiators, so that they can make the right things happen at the right time."

Portman, a developer of the Peachtree Center, said he has made it his business to know the building birth cycle—to know when there is a need for a particular development, to ascertain if it is feasible, what the realty costs will be, how to finance the project, to design it, and finally, how to carry through the construction process into reality. The greatest architectural idea, he said, is nothing until it becomes a reality, and architects must take more initiative in accomplishing the concrete.

He used Peachtree Center as an example of an effort to prove what can be done with a "do-it-yourself, private enterprise, urban renewal effort with

a master plan." It is to be a city within a city, renewing the heart of downtown Atlanta. The first building in the complex, the Merchandise Mart, has been a going concern for four or five years, the executive office building has just been completed, and the 600-room Regency Hotel is on the way up to join the Atlanta skyline.

Portman said that property acquisition is the biggest deterent to private development since property owners will often raise their prices with such a new center growing nearby. "This puts us in an awkward position, but we do not want the power of condemnation," Portman said. "We believe in free enterprise." He went on to explain that a major defect in the federal urban renewal program is that as soon as the land is accumulated and cleared, it is chopped up into little pieces again and sold. There is no plan for future development and "there is uncontrolled growth once more."

When Regents' Professor of Chemistry Dr. Bill Eberhardt took the stand before the alumni, he told them that they who had once taken freshman chemistry, would not believe the marvelous advances in chemistry possible today because of extremely sophisticated equipment. Mr. McKeever welcomed all alumni visiting the campus for Homecoming.

1. The minutes of the last Annual Meeting, held October 24, 1964, and published in the November-December, 1964 issue of The Georgia Tech Alumnus were approved as published.

2. Mr. McKeever made announcements about the day's program and urged everyone to attend the Alumni Luncheon held at 11:30 a.m. in the Old Gym. 3. Treasurer Gellerstedt gave the financial report. He stated that the total income for the year was $145,825.35 and expenses were $149,934.24. He also stated that the Association had an operating reserve of $106,629.53.

The report was approved as presented.

4. Vice President Howard Ector introduced and inducted the 1965 National Advisory Board. This recognition is given to alumni outside the

School at Tech now has over $450,000 in major equipment, he stated. Much of it is being used by undergraduates and not just by professors and graduate students.

One of the most interesting things, Dr. Eberhardt said, with a smile, is that the more expensive and up-to-date equipment is, the easier it is to do experiments. Cheap and old equipment is much harder to work with.

The last session of the day featured Dr. Milton Chaikin of the English department commenting on The Theatre of the Absurd as a phenomenon is related to surrealism in the visual arts.

It deprecates reason and emphasizes the despair arising out of man's existence. Man's existence is absurd—he is both victim and fool. It is a commentary on the erosion of humanistic values of our age, of the debasement of taste, of the era in which the individual has become a member of the lonely crowd, and in which scientific destruction has become a reality.

"To some," Dr. Chaikin said, "the idea of progress has been disproved.

Our society has become an air-conditioned nightmare."

He used works from Eugene Ionesco and Samuel Beckett as examples of the style that has come to be known as The Theatre of the Absurd.

The lectures concluded a stimulating day.

7. President Edwin D. Harrison was called on for remarks. Dr. Harrison congratulated the new members of the National Advisory Board and the new Honorary Alumni. He urged all to continue to support the Alumni Association in order to make Tech a better institution.

8. John C. Staton, president of the Georgia Tech Foundation, Incorporated, expressed appreciation for the assistance made possible through the continued support of the Roll Call.

Mr. Staton then recognized the members of the Board of the Georgia Tech Foundation present at the meeting.

He stated that the salary supplementation program grows each year i s size and effectiveness. He recognized that special projects such as the recent campus study and reorganization and the Urban Renewal Project are possible because of the alumni support.

A very large sum of scholarship money is available through matching funds.

9. Mr. McKeever spoke about the Association and the time he has been on the Board. The Roll Call which 32

began not too many years ago, he stated, has produced the basic funds that have become available to the President as seed funds to do things and to get things started. Everything that the Association does continues over a number of years. The research program is continuing each year and gaining and progressing. The scholarship fund pushes on and we want this to become a real challenge. The "Tech Today" program will continue to be planned under Matt Cole's administration. Mr. McKeever stated that this program will be a great help to the school. The plan is to bring key alumni, state officials, business and civic leaders to the campus and give them a two-day weekend program to show them what Tech is and what Tech can be with their help.

10. Madison F. Cole, '41, took the gavel as 1965-66 president of the Association. He expressed his gratitude for service on the Board this past year and thanked all those concerned. Any year the Alumni Association meets begins a new era and a progressive era, stated Mr. Cole. He hoped we would have two aims this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; double the amount of money received from the Roll Call and carry out the plans for the "Tech Today" program.

Mr. Cole announced that the George McCarty â&#x20AC;&#x201D; ANAK Award annually presented at this meeting to the "Outstanding Young Alumnus" would be presented at half-time, November 13, to Commander John W. Young, AE, '52, the Tech Astronaut. Young and his wife will be with us for the TechVirginia game to receive this award.

He urged all alumni to be at the Alumni Luncheon.

11. Secretary Beard, on behalf of the 1964-65 trustees, presented a gift to Mr. Dan McKeever, retiring president of the Association.

12. Mr. Cole recognized the new members of the Board of Trustees of the Alumni Association that were present. The meeting adjourned at 10:30.

Recent Graduates Impress Harvard Two Georgia Tech graduates are among 14 students in a class of 671 at the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration to be named Baker Scholars. They are Walter G. Cornett, III, of Lakeland, Florida and William W. George of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The designation of Baker Scholar represents the highest scholastic honor given Master in Business Administration students prior to graduation. The first two and a half per cent of the class are elected each fall by the faculty on the basis of scholarship during the first year in the two-year M.B.A. Program. Another two and a half per cent are named in the spring, shortly before graduation.

Both Cornett and George were previously honored at Harvard Business School by their selection as two of five outstanding young men from colleges in the Southeast to be awarded J. Spencer Love Fellowships for their two years of study at the school.

Cornett graduated from Tech in 1963 and George in 1964.

The M.B.A. program is designed to equip outstanding college graduates for managerial positions of responsibility in business, government and other organizations.

A Comet in the Lab UNDER very low temperatures and pressures that simulate the conditions of outer space, a Georgia Tech student is creating in the laboratory the cold, solid gases that are believed to make-up a comet hurtling through the heavens.

Don Bivens is forming and studying frozen ices of ammonia, nitric oxide, acetylene and ethylene that spectrum studies by astronomers indicate form most of the substance of comets and also appear on the surface of Jupiter and perhaps other of the outer-most planets.

Bivens is one of a group of Ph.D. students in chemical engineering conducting their research in the area of cryo34

genics or very low temperature research, under the direction of Dr. Henry A. McGee, Jr. The work is being supported by grants from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

"This is exciting work on the very frontier of science," Dr. McGee says.

"When a student forms an hypothesis and starts his experiments he has no real idea what will actually happen.

These experiments are in the tradition of the true nature of research."

Dr. McGee goes on to say that NASA is not the only agency interested in studies of what happens to matter at very low temperatures. Many chemical and oil companies are now excited by this new dimension of preparative chemistry.

What was not possible at normal temperatures can sometimes be accomplished at these very low temperature ranges.

A Year for Volunteers IN ITS first year on a voluntary basis the Georgia Tech Army ROTC has enrolled 590 freshmen for an increase of 102 percent over last year's 581. Furthermore, 72 additional freshmen wanting to join the Army corps had to be turned down because they were physically disqualified.

Given a chance to choose the service these students seem to be showing that to join is "the thing to do." "Many freshmen have brought their friends in," Col. C. B. Drennon, Jr. says. "Seventy-two freshmen that indicated at preregistration that they were not interested changed their minds and came to us later."

According to Department of the Army sources, the Tech enrollment is easily the best that has been achieved by any school the first year ROTC has been put on a voluntary basis.

Colonel Drennon, a Tech alumnus, is equally proud that 78 percent of 422 returning sophomores have decided to continue the program they began last year when ROTC was compulsory. There are now 89 juniors enrolled in advanced ROTC in contrast to last year's 80, and

84 seniors have signed up—an increase of two.

Colonel Drennon believes there are a number of reasons for this success story.

In the first place he launched an intensive campaign to let incoming students know exactly what the Army ROTC could offer them. Then campus student organizations invited officers to talk to students at freshman camp and faculty members and the administration were very cooperative. Finally, Colonel Drennon believes that this generation of students at academically rigorous Tech have fortitude and a sense of loyalty.

He says that when a survey was taken of freshmen enrolling in ROTC summer quarter—they were not required to sign their names—44 percent said they joined because they "thought it was the thing to do" and only two percent to avoid the draft.

One hundred and twenty freshmen also signed up for Navy ROTC at Tech this year—a figure about the same as last year—and 312 for the Air Force unit.

The Recks and Steaks T H E Tech student is no sophisticated caveman who likes his steaks raw and red. Ninety-nine and 99/100 percent of the boys eating in Brittain Dining Hall prefer well-done meat, according to Director of the Dining Halls C. W. Boyd.

And this estimate is not based on a small sample. Boyd says that on nights when Brittain serves T-bone steaks, 2,000 to 2,500 students will show up in contrast to the usual 1,600-1.800.

At breakfast Techmen prove themselves to be healthy young men who apparently believe that "big ambitions grow on milk." "This white food is by far the favorite breakfast drink, followed by iced tea and fruit punch," Boyd says.

"From 1,400 to 1,800 will go through two lines at breakfast and we won't sell one gallon of coffee per line," Boyd declares.

I To be a victim of the hands that move on the goldtrimmed face is a fate that befalls most modern men. Even the denizens of academe' serve time, for the ivory tower is only too wellequipped with clocks which dispel any remnant of the myth that on the campus there is a timeless, leisurely, search for truth. Such freedom does not exist. In the classroom there are hourly, weekly, and quarterly deadlines. Then there are deadlines for getting research proposals in to supporting agencies, progress reports and papers—for publication and for delivering at conferences.

Conferences fall regularly at irregular intervals everywhere from the boardwalk at Atlantic City to Helsinki and Muscle Shoals, representing groups like the Association for the Advancement of Vacuum Thought and the Institute for the Escalation of Warfare Upon Bacillus Limpidimus.

On campus, there are also faculty conferences and committee meetings —but with no concluding deadlines. And there are meetings with students: freshmen who fear becoming dropouts and who cry for mercy or a tutor; sophomores and juniors who want reasons for majoring in a particular field; seniors begging for the last passing grade needed to graduate—or for the more fortunate—glowing recommendations for graduate schools or employers; graduate students needing guidance and inspiration to help them through the exacting and poverty-stricken years. All of these punch time off the professor's clock.

So do the government agencies and businessmen who want professors to consult with them for the good of country and the health of free enterprise. The demands are enormous—especially considering that the professor usually has a family that needs to see him occasionally.

Nevertheless, he is expected to be a wise counselor, a brilliant researcher (or executive of research), a businessman-consultant, an articulate citizen, a member of the faculty club, a writer with a clear and precise style, and an exciting lecturer. He must also, of course, keep up with the latest developments in his own field as well as be aware of the rest of the world in a general sense.

It should not be surprising, therefore, that the professor sometimes seeks escape from additional tasks by unavailability. Since it is rare for a professor to have his own secretary to keep track of him, it is relatively easy for the evader to escapes: A campus can be very spacious and when a telephone call breaks the bookish quiet of an empty office, the culprit may be visiting in the faculty club, consulting with students on the library steps, or at work in any one of a half dozen laboratories.

When he misses committee meetings he can plead professorial absentmindedness. UnavailabiKty and vagueness probably contribute to the myth of academic timelessness, but they are, in reality, largely premeditated. The Genus Academicus has to have some protective devices.

Perhaps we will next hear of the formation of a Ban the Clock Committee. It's been ticking too loudly lately.

speaking, the boys prefer scrambled eggs over fried ones, toast over biscuits, and especially like all kinds of Danish pastries and donuts, all of which seems a bit un-Southern.

Luncheon favorites are fried chicken, roast beef and hamburger steaks—not surprising—and at supper spaghetti is a big favorite. French fries are always preferred over creamed potatoes, rolls over cornbread, and fruit pies and cakes over puddings.

Students, like the rest of the American public, are also subject to food fads.

"Last spring, for instance, there was the grapefruit diet: if you ate half a grapefruit before your meal you could eat everything else you wanted and still lose weight. Consumption of grapefruit halves tripled," continues Boyd sourly.

He states that most of his customers come to meals dressed reasonably well "but not formally." Sometimes in the morning—particularly on the very early Thursday mornings before ROTC drill "I look down the line and just know they're still asleep."

According to Boyd, more students are buying meal tickets than ever before and, as usual, they continue to lose them. Many cards are left in shirt pockets and disintegrate in laundries; others are left on visits home. A few months ago one boy explained that "when I was home our dog ate my ticket." He didn't, however, say whether the dog enjoyed his meal or not.

FEDERAL grants totaling $40,000 have just been awarded three University System professors for research on the more effective use and control of our water resources.

The three professors whose research will be administered through the Water Resources Research Center at Tech are: Dr. Roger Barnhart of the University's School of Forestry, Dr. C. S. Martin and Marion R. Carstens of Tech's School of Civil Engineering.

The grants were awarded by the U.S. Department of Interior's Office of Water Resources Research under a 1964 law: Since this federal program began, 13 projects totaling $300,000 have been initiated through the Tech Water Resources Center, according to the director of the center, Regents' Professor C. E. Kindsvater.

Coach Tonto Coleman spoke on the athletic program at Tech and brought out many aspects of minor sports in addition to a report on football. H e pointed out to the group that Georgia Tech has one of the best all around sports programs in the country and that the school and alumni can be proud of the fine job that is being done. sonville. President Edward M. "Snake" Swanson presided at the meeting and reported that the club now had enough funds to establish a Jacksonville scholarship at Georgia Tech. A report was read during the business meeting on the TechMiami Freshman game plans (the game was sponsored by the Jacksonville Kiwanis Club and played on October 9 in the Gator Bowl where the Tech frosh lost to Miami, 14-8). Another report was made on the club's participation in the inauguration of Dr. Robert Spiro as president of Jacksonville University. Coach Griffin closed the meeting with a discussion on the 1965 team prospects and a movie on the highlights of the 1964 season.

To start the final segment of the season, T e c h trailed T u l a n e in N e w Orleans for over half of the game (for the third year in a row) a n d then rallied to win. Trailing 3-10 deep in the third period, the sophomore-studded J a c k e t s p u t on an 80-yard drive with T o m m y Carlisle going over from the one on the first play of the final period.

T h e next time they got the ball the Jackets, again led by K i m King a n d Lenny Snow, drove 77 y a r d s to t h e T u l a n e 3 from which Bunky H e n r y kicked the second field goal t h a t won it.

Returning to Grant Field, K i m K i n g took over where S a n d y Koufax left off to close out national southpaw week by personally rallying the Georgia Tech Yellow J a c k e t s to a convincing 23-14 win over the Auburn Tigers before 50,164. T h e left-handed sophomore, playing what Bobby D o d d called, " t h e best single game by a Tech quarterback since I have been coaching," accounted for 216 of Tech's 270 offensive yards, scored once on a sparkling 31-yard run, passed for another touchdown, a n d did everything else except

win t h e game ball. T h a t went to T o m Bleick, t h e defensive cornerback who scored the other Tech touchdown a n d generally m a d e life miserable for Auburn all afternoon.

T h e defense began the game fighting for Tech's life after Auburn got the ball at its own 45 on a short p u n t a n d drove for a field goal a n d then grabbed a fumble a t t h e Tech 25 a n d tried another. King didn't get a chance to show his wares until late in t h e first period a n d a t that time you could have got T e c h a n d 10 from almost anyone in the stadium excepting the Jackets, themselves. King hit 5 of 5 passes in a touchdown drive that put Tech ahead, 6-3, with 13:27 on the second period clock. T h e n Auburn came right back for a tie on a long drive t h a t was again climaxed by a field goal b y Lewis whose first one was for 49 yards a n d a W a r Eagle record. I t was t h e last time Auburn was to be in the game, but nobody realized it then.

A fumble on the second half kickoff led to the play that broke t h e Tigers' backs. Tech's T o m m y Elliott fell on it at the Auburn 31. On the next play, King started to drop back as if to throw t h a t bomb the book says y o u should unleash after recovering a fumble, spotted a n open space in t h e Tigers' defense, hipped his way past a pair of defenders at the line of scrim-

M i n u s Lenny Snow, their most feared running threat in over a decade, t h e J a c k e t s ' game plan was to go by air, but on this afternoon, first one thing a n d then another seemed to go wrong with the passing attack.

Stylish sophomore K i m King took Billy Lothridge's n a m e out of t h e record book in three places a n d erased 1948 quarterback J i m m y Southard's only entry in Ned West's prize ledger as the Jackets piled u p a 28-0 half time lead a n d then went on to whip Virginia, 42-19. With just two minutes left on the first half clock, K i n g smacked down the first Lothridge record (most passes completed in a season) when he hit E d Varner at the Virginia 10 for his 84th completion of the year. On the next play Lenny Snow scored Tech's third touchdown, a n d K i m King spent the rest of the afternoon adding 12 more completions to his first mark in the book. B y the middle of the fourth period, King h a d also broken Lothridge's record for the most yards gained passing a n d rushing in a game a n d Southard's mark for the most yards passing in a game.

On his final throwing try, the lefthander hit his favorite target for the afternoon, Craig B a y n h a m for 16 yards a n d broke Lothridge's record for the most passes completed in a game a n d his mark for most yards passing a n d rushing during a season.

Stymied for three quarters b y a tenacious and pressing Georgia defense and their own sudden propensity for errors, the Georgia Tech offense couldn't get moving until the final minutes of the third quarter against Georgia a n d by that time it was all over but the shouting. T h e Bulldogs,
