the end of the year, here goes: Georgia Tech was very lucky this year to get Dr. Edwin D. Harrison for its sixth president.

He has made an excellent impression on students, alumni, faculty and the general public. And he's heading Tech for bigger things in the future.

Paul Weber would get a national award for performance as an acting president if there was such an award.

Despite Tech's season's record, Bobby Dodd is the best coach in the business.

He played the entire season without a decent kicker and with one quarterback and no breakaway runner. And he did tell you so before the season started. Next year should be a different story.

Students are getting smarter every year. All you have to do to find this out is work on a couple committees with them. They'll outsmart you every time.

Whitey Urban is the most devoted football coach in the business. And he is one of the most underrated coaches we know. * * * A BILL DIEHL is becoming a better photographer with every issue. In the last two months he has had his work printed in three national publications.

We doubt if any college could match Tech's 1956-57 publication record: The Engineer was named the best college magazine of its type in the country; The Technique and The Blue Print received All-American ratings; The Rambler was just five points short of making AilAmerican in its first year; and The Alumnus took two national awards. Who said engineering students aren't wellrounded?

Tech alumni are more loyal than any other group of alumni in the state-supported category. The national recordbreaking year of 1956-57 proved that to one and all.

The Foundation program of supplementing faculty salaries with your Roll Call funds was the finest thing that has ever happened at Tech.

George Griffin is still the finest man we have ever known.

The Russians did more to advance American engineering education and research with the two Sputnik launchings than all the engineering educators have

been able to do in the past five years.

People have become science and engineering conscious now.

D. M. Smith, retired from active teaching for three years, still has one of the finest minds to ever grace the campus. He's tutoring the football players for the A.A., now. He's a real credit to the Scots.

With the nuclear reactor and the radioisotopes laboratory, Tech will be as well equipped for nuclear education and research as any college in the country.

A LAST YEAR, Georgia Tech did 409! of

all engineering research at colleges and universities in the Southeast. Tech's research program is growing by leaps and bounds. See the review on Tech's electronics research on page 16 of this issue.

Tech's new classroom building has been approved and soon will be under construction. Next on the calendar is the new EE building. The Alumnus will carry a story on the expansion plans for the campus in February.

Corbin Gwaltney of The Johns Hopkins Magazine is the best alumni magazine editor in America. And, did you see where the former editor of the MIT alumni magazine (1929-1939) Dr. Kiilian, now president of the Boston institution, has been given that big government appointment. Makes all the alumni editors a little more hopeful.

The most improved columnist in America is Jesse Outlar, sports editor of The Atlanta Constitution.

In the next four issues, The Alumnus will feature among other things a special article on the expansion plans for Georgia Tech, a photo-text story on the role of fraternities at an American university, a big 32-page article prepared by a group of the country's outstanding alumni editors on higher education in America and a special photographic essay on the spirit of Georgia Tech.

The Georgia Tech campus is a wonderful place to work. And Tech alumni are the best possible audience an editor could hope for. With this prepositional ending we bid you Happy 1958.

i GET A BIG KICK out of my increasingly frequent visits to the Tech campus. Whether it's for alumni business, a conference with administration officials, a faculty coft'ee or a meeting with student groups, I like what I find at Georgia Tech.

Although younger in appearance (or so its seems), today's students seem smarter than we were at the same age. They certainly have better qualifications for meeting older people and show more self-assurance than 1 ever felt. The work that they turn out confirms my observations. Campus publications, special events like Homecoming and Engineers Day, Drama Tech and the other student-planned activities reflect real effort and organization and, even more important, produce fine results.

The present faculty at Tech is just as excellent as the one we all thought the best after we had been out of school a while. They are enthusiastic about the interest you alumni have shown in their problems. Their spirit was upped considerably by the salary supplementation grants made possible by your contributions to the Annual Roll Calls. The morale factor is very important in maintaining a top-flight faculty. And the supplementation program that aided this morale so was the first big step in raising the standards of our teachers. Eventually we hope that the prestige and pay-scale, of our college professors will be on a level with doctors, lawyers and other professional people.

This year for the first time, our Roll Call went out of the State on a personal solicitation basis. The team of Dr. Edwin Harrison, Ivan Allen, Jr., Fred Storey and Bobby Dodd, shown on the opposite page, dramatically presented the needs of Georgia Tech to the alumni of Charlotte, Chattanooga, Jacksonville and Birmingham. A marked increase in Roll Call interest was attained in all four cities. The leaders who made these great Tech rallies successful were John Vickers.

CONGRATULATIONS AT YEAR'S END T O ANAK: for fifty OVI.R 200 members of ANAK, Tech's top leadership society got together in Atlanta on November 29 to celebrate the Golden Anniversary of the Society.

Among the group were (L. to R.) Cherry Emerson, '08; Don Stephenson, '58; George Griffin, '22; L. W. "Chip" Robert. Jr., '08; Fred Smith, '58 and the Society's founder, George McCarty, '08.

Kmerson and Robert were charter members of ANAK and Smith and Stephenson are 1957 members. Griffin was cited at the meeting as Mr. ANAK and Mr. Georgia Tech and an oil portrait of him was unveiled as a surprise.

You: for keeping the big cup GEORGIA TECH won something more important than the ball

game on November 30. For the second consecutive year, the Tech alumni whipped the Georgia alumni for the Alumni Membership Trophy. Charles R. Simons, president of the Alumni Association is shown in pregame ceremonies accepting the cup from Georgia Alumni President Phil Campbell. This year's score was 6,775 members for Tech to 4,910 for Georgia. Last year Tech won the contest which closes annually the day before the ball game, 6,608 to 4,183.

If Tech wins the cup again in next year's contest, your Alumni Association will receive permanent possession.

A real winning team i HI; GROUP of Tech administrators and alumni leaders shown at the right went out of the State to visit special alumni rallies during the past three months. It was the first personal solicitation carried on outside Georgia in the history of the Tech Roll Call.

Visiting Charlotte, Chattanooga, Jacksonville and Birmingham, the Roll Call team was amazed at the success of all of the meetings. Average attendance at the four big area meetings was 166. The record crowd for the series of meetings went to Birmingham where the picture at the right was taken. In the front row, 1. to R, are Coach Bobby Dodd and President Edwin D. Harrison. A WOMAN IN A MANS WORLD B

EING ONE of 33 girls in one of

the

world's best-known masculine strongholds is no easy task. The 5,600 male students at Georgia Tech are as proud as the alumni of the School's masculine reputation. And, believe me, they don't intend to see it changed one bit.

I remember when coeds first came to Tech some five years ago. I wasn't here then, but I knew a couple of girls who were. They told me that everyone was worried for fear that the girls might change Tech. Well, the worrying was for naught. Just come by the campus some day and take a look. The men are still wandering around wearing the standard campus costume of beat-up " T " shirts, blue jeans and that slide rule on their belts. We haven't changed Tech, but as one of the first coeds said upon graduation, "I'm afraid Tech has changed us considerably."

To me the main reason that the female-type student will never change Tech can be found in the toughness of the curriculum. The whole academic program is geared to the men, and its pace is such that a girl has to work so hard to keep up with her class that she has little time to think of changing things around the campus. Where else do coeds have an average college day of classes from 8-11 and from three to five threehour labs per week?

About now I suppose you're wondering, "Why does a girl enter Tech knowing how tough it is and realizing that she December, 1957

might be out of place?" I guess the answers to that are fairly simple. Tech is an excellent school, the best of its type in the entire South. There's a definite need for women in the engineering fields today. So, why not go to the best school to prepare yourself for a career.

Another answer could be that there is just enough of the pioneer spirit in some of us to make us try something just a little bit tougher than the usual.

I don't agree with the answer a lot of folks expect to hear from a Tech coed when she is questioned about why she came to Tech, i.e., to get a husband.

There is no doubt that Tech men would make good husbands. However, going to Tech for the sole purpose of getting a husband is doing it the tough way.

Chances are you'll flunk out of school before you come close to accomplishing your objective.

Being one of the few women in a man's world has several disadvantages that aren't readily visible when you select your college. For instance, people are always sounding off in the press about you. Not long ago a movie actress remarked in Atlanta that she wouldn't like to be a Tech coed because she felt that a girl needed competition.

She obviously didn't know what she was talking about. There's plenty of competition for a Tech coed in this city known the world over for its pretty women. Tech men date girls from Agnes Scott, Emory, the nursing schools, and

the Atlanta high schools in addition to the girl back home. And if these don't offer enough competition, there's always school work.

Then there's this matter of getting accepted by the Tech men. Each girl here has to do this on her own. The acceptance of the first coed didn't help me or any of the present group of girls a bit.

The way the Tech men look at it, each of us must prove herself.

After being at Tech for a while, everyone knows who you are. This makes dating for a coed a bit unusual. The opportunities for meeting boys from other schools are very limited, and most of the coeds date only Tech men (and since they are the best why bother with the rest). This sometimes leads to the feeling that you are living in the proverbial glass bowl since everyone you date knows all the others you date.

Another unusual factor about coeds dating at Tech is the resentment that the Tech men have for you because you have dared to strive towards entering a basically male profession. They seem to look upon all of us as walking "Univacs" or mental cases. "A woman's place is in the home," they reason. "And she should stay there." This may be true. But women have been successful in many heretofore male professions. And with the shortage of engineers, there is no reason why they can't be just as successful in this field. In fact, in the past few continued on page 8

years, women engineers have proven very successful working in industry. I guess the Tech men sometimes still prefer those "sweet, helpless little girls" that flatter them to death and then trap them at the same time.

One of the real disadvantages of being a coed at Tech, however, has nothing to do with the opposite sex. It's the complete lack of coed facilities for campus living. The girls dormitory is a converted house on Fifth Street which holds only 11 girls. General living conditions in this dormitory aren't designed for women at all. And, to top it all off, the girls pay more for their rooms than do the men. The girls can eat at the same price as the men. But they have to walk six blocks to the dining hall which is located right in the center of the men's dormitory. It seems only fair that the girls should have their meals closer to their dormitory.

And another thing, it seems that the administration at Tech was definitely not set up for girls. Whenever you need to find out anything specificaly concerning the girls, you generally make the rounds of every dean before you get your answer. The dormitory rules are a good example of the oddness of Tech's student rules when applied to girls. In one year, these rules underwent four complete revisions. Now the same rules apply to every girl living in the girls dorm whether she is a freshman or a senior.

This is obviously not fairâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;especially seeing that I am a senior. In comparison to Emory, Scott or Georgia, these rules are easy for the freshmen but tough for the upperclassmen.

An example of the unfairness of these rules can be found in the use of the library. The rules require the girls to be in their dormitory by 10:30 P.M., Sunday through Thursday. The library stays open until 11:30 P.M. which puts the girls living on-campus at a distinct disadvantage with the men. Being an engineering school, Tech has many labs.

And labs require reports. And since you normally work in pairs in labs and there are so few girls here that you normally end up with a boy for a lab partner, this curfew rule again puts the girls at a disadvantage.

No incentive for good grades

Coeds at Tech aren't given much incentive to make good grades. If a girl is making poor grades, the boys laugh about it. And if she makes good ones, the boys resent it. The subject of grades brings up another disadvantage of being a coed: there are few honor societies to give recognition for outstanding work

done by coeds. Most of Tech's departmental honor societies are for men only.

There are a number of coeds at Tech whose names appear on the Dean's List and who would be eligible for scholastic honorary societies if they were only open to women. But this is one rule we can't blame on Tech or Tech men as most of these societies are only abiding by the national rules.

At Tech, coeds can figure on encountering four general types of professors: Type one is the professor who stresses the fact that there is a lady present and conducts the class in a most gentlemanly manner. Type two is the professor who realizes that a lady is present and goes out of his way to demonstrate that her presence will not make any difference in his lecture or its presentation. Type three is the professor who completely ignores the fact that a girl is in the class. And type tour is the professor who conducts the class the way any normal coed class would be conducted.

But there are advantages

But being a coed at Tech does have its advantages as well as its disadvantages.

You get a real social education here on the hill, for instance. Since the girls arc so outnumbered you naturally get stared at by many men all of the time. At first this is annoying, but once you get over your initial embarrassment it becomes very valuable. It forces a girl to eliminate any self consciousness in her makeup and enables you to make friends with ease. This ease of making friends helps a Tech coed to get along with most any group of people. When you visit another campus you find that you can fit in with any other group without trying. It's something that I believe is not prevalent under normal coed college campus conditions.

But the greatest advantage of being a coed at Tech is that you can get the best in engineering education and training. And this in itself is enough reason for any girl bent on pursuing this career field to ignore all of the school's disadvantages. Georgia Tech is a unique institution, and I, for one, have no intention of trying to change it.

Being a Georgia Tech coed is novel. tough, wonderful, terrible, exciting, dull and heavenlyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;depending upon the time of the day and the day of the week. Like everything else it has its advantages and disadvantages. And in the past three and a half years I've seen a number of outstanding advances made at Tech in the acceptance of coeds. But, in the final analysis, the girls have made no changes on the rough, tough, masculine atmosphere that is Georgia Tech.

Coliseum went into effect with the opening of the 1957-58 basketball season. Chair seats for Tech's 16-game home season now are priced at $2.00 per game. They sold for $2.50 per game last year. Unreserved seats in the coliseum are now on sale for $1.00 per game. Last year they sold for $2.00 per game.

Tickets for all Tech home games may be purchased at the Athletic Association Office or at the gate the night of a game. Mail orders for tickets to any or all of Tech's home games are now being accepted by the Tech Athletic Office, Atlanta 13, Georgia. Checks or money orders made out to the Georgia Tech Athletic Association must accompany all mail orders.

The Tech team returns three of last year's starters. Buddy Blemker, Terry Randall and Gary Phillips from the nucleus of the Jackets for this season. The starting lineup will also include veteran Jimmy Johnson and sophomore Frank Inman. Coach Whack Hyder is counting on Ham Stith and bright prospect Duke Denton for help. Denton will not be eligible to Tech until January because of scholastic difficulties. If the Kentuckian passes his work this quarter, the Jackets could be in for another good season. But it's doubtful if they can match the sparkling 18-8 finish of the 1956-57 team.

THE END OF THE BOWL ROAD FOR THE FIRST TIME since the 1950 season, the Jackets will spend their New Year's vacations at home. Losing two and tying one of their last four contests ruled the national champion bowl trotters out of a trip this year.

Tennessee started the slide by single-winging Tech to its most decisive defeat in years, 21-6. The Jackets didn't score in the Knoxville game until a Braselton to Vickers pass connected with but 45 seconds to go.

Until early in the final quarter, the Alabama game looked like another loss. But a recovered fumble at the Tide's 19 gave Tech a chance to tie the game. Braselton sneaked it across and James added the point to make it 7-7. Alabama had scored the TD in the first period. On the kickoff following the Tech score, the Tide let the ball go untouched and James fell on it for Tech. On Fourth down at the 27, Urban Henry kicked his first field goal of his Tech career and Tech led 10-7. Alabama flubbed two more scoring chances as they missed field goals from the 17 and 16.

The Florida game was the SMU game in reverse. Tech fought off the Gators all afternoon in the mud and never threatened themselves. It was the second 0-0 game on Grant Field since 1938.

Georgia won its first from Tech in nine years, 7-0, in the season's finale. Tech threatened all through the first half but could get no closer than the Bulldogs' eight. In the dying minutes of the third period, Georgia drove 50 yards to a score. Tech threatened again inside the Georgia 20 but could not produce a score.

New facilities such as computers and nuclear reactors of a most expensive type must be added. Staff to instruct in new disciplines must be obtained in salary competition with industry which is attempting to solve the technical problem on which our immediate survival depends. Only the utmost effort on the part of those who are informed will save the life of the goose so that the supply of golden eggs can continue.

"As the outstanding technological school of the southeast Georgia Tech should expand rapidly into the gradute field and offer teaching and research in the most important of the new disciplines and technologies. As the only engineering, architectural and industrial management school in the State of Georgia we are obliged to offer engineering, scientific, architectural and management courses to a rapidly increasing group of Georgia boys. As a truly regional institution we should make our facilities available to the best of students from other parts of the southeast. Through Southern Tech we should furnish Georgia industry with a rapidly increasing supply of technicians. Through our Engineering Experiment Station we should furnish industry and government with the most up-to-date research facilities and consulting services.

Walter Mitchell, Atlanta business and civic leader, who served as chairman of the Committee of the Georgia Tech Foundation which carried out the threemonths study of Tech pointed out that a similar study was made in 1955. The purpose of this second study was to see what progress had been made, what the needs of Tech are today and what part the Tech Foundation can play in meeting these needs.

"There is reliable evidence that Tech still has the quality in faculty, in students and in research that she should have," Mr. Mitchell said. "The Trustees of the Foundation are committed to a program to do everything they can to see that Tech's position of leadership is not lost, because we believe that it is of great importance to the young people, to the business and industry and to the general prosperity of our state that this be maintained," Mr. Mitchell said.

"From this study we find that there has been some improvement in the last two years. However, we are not holding our own with many neighboring southern institutions. Only half of the salary goal has been met and only half of the most essential equipment has been secured. None of the building needs shown in the study made two years ago has been filled. We were shocked to find that in a list of 32 leading educational institutions Tech's salary scale ranked 31st. We find that several southern colleges have a higher salary scale and more modern teaching equipment than Tech, and we do not know how long Tech can hold her position of leadership under these conditions.

"To meet these demands Tech needs $2,000,000 in annual operating expenses predicated upon present enrollment. It needs $500,000 a year for equipment for the next 8 years and between $4,000,000 and $5,000,000 a year for buildings for the next 5 years. In addition, Southern Tech needs a permanent campus and increased funds for operating expenses and equipment.

"It is certain that enrollment will increase to approximately 7,500 b'y 1965 and it will take a vigorous tightening of admissions policy to hold it to this level. This will be an increase of about 4% per year necessitating a continuing yearly increase of at least $250,000 each year in operating expenses."

Dr. Harrison paid tribute to the department heads at Tech and to the alumni and business leaders who have worked diligently during the summer

"The needs we are discussing are over and above the important Development and Nuclear programs for which the Governor has already made commitments.

The interest and concern which the Governor and the Board of Regents have shown for Tech's problems are most encouraging and have made important progress possible.

"The Foundation Trustees have authorized grants to supplement the salaries of 80 leading professors during this school year in order to keep the fine faculty that Tech now has. Contributions from Alumni and from business have made it possible for the Foundation to fill these emergency needs in the field of faculty salaries. This current study, like the one two years ago, was made by the state's business and industrial leaders. The needs are realistic, based on cold, hard facts."

most critical period in its history," says Dr. Edwin D. Harrison, the Institute's president in submitting a report of the needs of Tech to the Trustees of the Georgia Tech Foundation at a recent meeting in Atlanta.

Dr. Harrison went on to point out that like all engineering schools, its problems are acute but its opportunities are great. "Within a few decades the southeast has been transformed from an agricultural economy to a rapidly expanding industrial economy," continued Dr. Harrison. "The change has found the region short of facilities and trained men and with inadequate facilities for training men. Georgia Tech, for many years the region's outstanding technological institution, is logically expected to take the lead in overcoming this shortage. If we act with energy and foresight we can continue as the leading technical institution of the southeast and one of the most respected in the world. Even more important, we will make the contribution to our state and nation which is the obligation of such an institution. We hold our place at the present due to our reputation, our long history of high standards, an esprit de corps on the part of the staff which enables us to hold people in the face of today's competition from places with far greater resources.

"In this struggle to meet a grave situation the technical schools have a peculiarly difficult position. The increasingly technical nature of our economy faces us with the demand for a greater percentage of technically trained men and at the same time an insistence on a much higher type of training. This is rendered peculiarly acute by the realization, which is growing on us, that competition with other countries which are exerting every effort to outstep us in this regard must be met or the very survival of our way of life is endangered.

In order to furnish our economy with vastly increased numbers of technically trained men and simultaneously greatly upgrade the training of at least a considerable percentage of these imposes fantastic goals for the technical schools.

Tech's unique course in survival in the w a t e r could save your life this summer

DROWNPROOFING S

ii, Georgia Tech has been stressing a course called drownproofing in its physical training program.

Developed by Tech swimming coach, Fred R. Lanoue, using Tech students as guinea pigs, the one-quarter course is now required of all Tech freshmen as part of the PT curriculum.

Fundamentally, drownproofing is a technique of breathing while swimming in deep water with such an absolute minimum of energy expenditure that complications like multiple cramps, heavy clothes, disabling injuries, rough water and long immersion have little or no effect on survival.

Coach Lanoue's course, now being taught at Emory, Duke, Kenyon College and the U. S. Naval Academy, as well as at Tech, is aimed at teaching survival and not fancy swimming strokes. As the originator of drownproofing says, "Drowning ranks second only to automobile accidents as a cause of accidental deaths. Anyone who uses the water for either recreation or work owes it to himself and his family to learn to protect himself in the water. This technique is cheaper and better than any insurance or life-saving gadget a man can buy. We do not try to influence people away from using life jackets or boat cushions or from exercising extreme caution while on or near the water. What we're trying to accomplish is a change from fear of the water to respect for the water. We try to teach the boys that a technique in the head is worth a million helping hands that may be out of reach."

Statistics gathered a year ago on 4,000 Tech students who had completed the course show how well Fred Lanoue has done his job. Of the group, 3,800 of them could swim a mile in trunks; 3,600 could swim a mile wearing pants and long-sleeved shirts; 3,200 of them could tread water 45 minutes with wrists tied behind backs; 2,500 of them could recover a body from an 11-foot depth and tow it 60 yards; and every single one of them learned to swim before graduation. All this at the cost of a few bruised shins and toes, for not one serious accident has been traced to the course since its inception.

The Georgia Tech Engineering Experiment Station is also the South's largest university-connected engineering research and development agency. During the past year, over 40% of Georgia Tech's $2,250,000 plus research budget was devoted to work in the electronic fields.

At the close of World War II, Georgia Tech was doing a research volume of just over $200,000 and less than 2 5 % of it was devoted to electronics. Tech's greatest research growth has been in electronics, and the future outlook is for an even greater increase in this research field.

Around 90% of all of Georgia Tech's electronic research is government sponsored. Most researchers agree that the majority of the great forward strides in this field at university research centers have been sponsored by the military. Failure of one tiny component in missile may well void the entire capacity of that missile to deliver its load. The Vanguard failures exemplified this fact.

Examples of miniaturization trends are the transistor and cryotron, both developed through research work in solid state physics, the real coming field in electronics development according to most Tech researchers interviewed.

The interference problem is becoming acute. Hence the emphasis at Tech on quartz studies (which increase the efficiency of the crystals on keeping the communications device on a constant frequency without modulating thus allowing placing channels of communications closer together on the frequency bands ).

Communications and meteor trails

INTERFERENCE STUDIES ARE A BIG PART OF COMMUNICATION RESEARCH.

The old basic versus applied research argument has never been settled at Tech.

For engineering itself is an applied science. Tech does little of what the public would call basic research, the longhaired, lonely scientist type. Dr. James E. Boyd, physicist and director of Tech's Engineering Experiment Station sums it up this way: "Your creative engineering is all in the applied science field.

How do you expect to take away from the engineer the creativeness of design?"

W. B. Wrigley, head of the Station's communications branch says, "Differentiating between basic and applied research is almost an impossibility in the engineering fields. In half of our work you couldn't get the people working on the same project to agree on whether the project was basic of applied."

An example of basic research

At Tech there is a considerable amount of fundamental electronics research work being sponsored all the time.

Some of this work which is basic by one definition (no end product is in mind when the project starts) has resulted in new techniques for improving old products or even entirely new products. One example at Tech of this is thin metal film studies started 7 years ago under a U. S. Signal Corps contract. The original mission of the project was to study the effects of various thin metal films when plated to quartz crystals (used to hold radios on fixed frequency). Out of these studies has come new techniques for fabricating much more stable quartz crystal resonators, better standards for checking quartz crystals, and soldering 18

techniques useful in the transitor and printed circuitry fields as well as in quartz crystals work.

New products from basic research

Example of a new product was the VHF rheostat developed at Tech a couple of years back. The new rheostat was an incidental development during a fundamental research study on the electrical properties of quartz crystals. Heretofore, variable and fixed resistors had unwanted reactances which appeared at very high frequencies. Consequently, electrical properties of quartz crystals could not be measured at these high frequencies since the standard measurement process depended on a comparison techniques utilizing fixed or variable resistors. Tech engineers realized the only solution to the problem was to invent a variable resistor designed to eliminate the unwanted reactances. Using thin metal techniques, the Tech engineers came up with the new device which is now in initial production runs. The new V H F rheostat will be the answer to many similar problems in other electronic equipment operating in this frequency range such as television and mobile communications.

The big problems in the field

Biggest R & D problems in the electronics of the future according to Tech researchers are (1) reliability of electronic components (2) miniaturization of components, and (3) interference in communications work. Other problems facing R & D men in this field include the effects of neutron bombardment on electronic components in case of atomic aircraft, or atomic warfare.

Best example of need for reliability

Other hopes for increased channels lies in metor-scatter research being carried out by Georgia Tech and other research groups for the Air Force. Under this project, Tech is studying the form of meteors, how often they occur, and in what section of the sky. End product of this nation-wide project is the perfection of a communications system that may permit the sending of more than 1,000 words a second by "bouncing" radio messages off the trail of meteors as they flash through the sky at speeds up to 160,000 miles an hour. What limits the number of broadcast channels now is the ionosphere, the "reflecting board" that returns radio signals to the earth. The ionosphere isn't thick enough to handle the higher frequencies.

That's where the metors come in. As they rip through the shell of air that surrounds the earth, they leave a 10 to 20 mile ionized electrical wake like a jet plane's vapor trail. Radio signals stored up on magnetic tape by teletypes are squirted out at incredible speeds when a meteor trail is lined up in the right position to bounce it to a companion receiving set.

The directors of this project hope to add hundreds of more communication "channels through this meteor-scatter process. "That's two to three times what we have available now," says Mr. Jesse James, who is earning his Ph.D. degree working on the meteor project at Tech.

One of the troubles the Tech men encountered when they organized their meteor study was trying to eliminate television signals that came bouncing off the ionosphere from a television station in England.

Lately, the meteor-scatter group has spent a great deal of their own time keeping track of the Russian Sputnik as it whizzed around the world.

Robert P. Stuntz, ME '40, has been appointed assistant sales manager of The Babcock and Wilcox Company's Refractories division. His offices will be in New York City. Stuntz joined Babcock and Wilcox in 1940 as a plant engineer in the Company's Augusta works. He was appointed assistant district sales manager in 1950 and a district sales manager in 1951. He belongs to the American Ceramic Society, ASME, AIME AISE and other professional societies.
