Many good things for Tech have come about during this period, and I am glad to have been your representative in this challenging and interesting time.

About the most important single happening of this period, of course, has been our stepped-up Roll Call.

The benefits of your generous contributions already have been strongly felt on the campus. Thanks to you, they will continue to be effective for years ahead.

During 1956-57, for the first time in years, Tech did not suffer a single major loss in teaching faculty members. Top administration leaders at Tech credit the faculty supplementation program, made possible by your contributions, for this record.

Our new president, Dr. Harrison, has taken the reins and is already working just as hard for Tech as if he'd been here always. His pleasant and engaging personality and his enthusiasm for Tech have made him one of us. You'll enjoy meeting him at the annual meeting of your Association, Homecoming Day. The annual meeting gets underway at 10:00 a.m. on November 2 in the Wilby Room of the Price Gilbert Library. It will be followed immediately by the famed Ramblin' Wreck parade.

It sure wouldn't be right to close this column without thanking Dr. Paul Weber for his splendid assistance and cooperation in alumni activities during his period as acting president.

A brief look at the operations of the Foundation during

Tech Foundation, marked one of the important milestones in its history.

During this fiscal year the cornerstone was finally laid for building a stronger Tech through a program of supplementation of faculty salaries.

In the previous year, under Walter Mitchell's presidency, two important new steps were taken. A study was made of Tech's needs by a Committee headed by Cherry Emerson. This Study Report clarified which of the needs should be met from state funds and which from private or Foundation funds. The Report pointed clearly to the need for supplementation of the salaries of selected faculty members if the quality of the faculty was to be properly maintained, for state funds alone are not enough to meet today's competitive salary scales in the engineering and scientific fields.

At the same time a plan was developed to insure increased income to the Foundation in order to meet these needs for supplementary funds. The Alumni Association intensified its annual Roll Call Campaign with the close cooperation of the Foundation. As a result, the Alumni responded with contributions in each of the last two years which amounted to approximately as much as all previous Roll Calls together.

In addition, the Tech Foundation worked with the Foundation of the University of Georgia to set up the Joint Development Committee. This Committee has organized a continuous solicitation of business and industry in the state for contributions to the Foundations.

Many of the large business firms have a direct interest in Tech and recruit personnel from the graduating class. Others realize that industrial progress demands well-trained manpower and so they have a stake, too, in the kind of job Tech does. As a result, the response to the appeal for annual contributions was most encouraging.

Thus, the groundwork for the Development Program had been carefully and ably prepared by leaders from the Alumni, the Faculty, and business and industry in Georgia. In order to put the Development Program into operation, we asked each member of the Foundation to serve on one important Committee.

The Committee on Needs, headed by Walter Mitchell, is made up of the following members: John C. Staton; Fuller E. Callaway, Jr.; Ben R. Gordon; Thomas Fuller; George W. McCarty; John P. Baum for the Foundation; and J. J. McDonough and Oscar Davis from the Alumni Association. It is the responsibility of this Committee to see that the Study Report is brought up to date each year. In this way, the Foundation will always have before it a clear picture of Tech's immediate and long-term needs and can decide which of these should be met from State funds and which from private funds. From this basic information the Trustees will chart the Foundation's course. This Committee is now in the midst of an intensive job, working with department heads at Tech and with the men who made the original Study Report in order to prepare an up-todate assessment of Tech's needs.

The Committee on Funds is headed

by Howard Johnson and made up of the following members: Cherry L. Emerson; Julian T. Hightower; Frank M. Spratlin; Robert H. White; Charles R. Yates; Y. F. Freeman; Wayne J. Holman; George S. Jones, Jr.; George T. Marchmont; and C. Pratt Rather. It is the responsibility of this Committee to see that adequate funds are available to the Foundation to carry on the needed annual supplementation of faculty salaries and for other purposes. The Committee works closely with the Alumni Association and the Joint Tech-Georgia Development Committee which are the major sources of such funds.

Mr. Robert H. White assumed the cochairmanship of the Joint Tech-Georgia Development Committee in order to continue the important solicitation of funds from business and industry. Working with Mr. White on the Executive Committee of the Joint Development Fund are: Inman Brandon, Robert B. Troutman, Sr., Jack J. McDonough, John Staton and Joel Hurt.

William C. Wardlaw, Jr., Vice-President of the Foundation, and Henry W. Grady, Treasurer, are co-chairmen of the Committee on Finance and Allocations.

The following members are serving on this Committee: Robert B. Wilby, William A. Parker, and George W. Wood-

ruff. It is the responsibility of this Committee to invest the funds of the Foundation and also to recommend to the Trustees specific grants to be made to Tech. All requests for grants reach the Foundation upon the recommendation of the president of Tech who in turn has received the requests from heads of the various departments. These requests are studied by the Allocations Committee within the framework of the program developed by the Committee on Needs and the funds available as determined by the Committee on Funds.

During the past year the Allocations Committee worked very closely with Dr. Weber, Acting President, Dean Mason and Dean Hefner to present a plan for supplementation of faculty salaries for the school year 1957-58. There is intensive competition from other universities and from industry for the kind of trained men that Tech must have on its faculty.

In order to keep the ablest men at Tech and to secure new faculty members to fill vacancies, a plan was worked out to supplement salaries amounting to approximately $90,000 for the school year beginning September 1957. The Committee recommended this plan to the Trustees in April. It was adopted with the additional commitment of another $60,000, making a total of $150,000 for the year for the strengthening of the faculty. Each individual grant must be separately approved by the Trustees.

Realizing that this Development Program cannot fully succeed unless the alumni and the leaders of business and industry understand its importance, the Foundation has encouraged the development of a Speakers' Bureau to take the story to alumni and civic groups during the coming year, and is assisting the administration leaders who have undertaken to organize this effort. Charles R. Yates is chairman of this program for the Foundation.

This important Development Program is the work of many hands. The faculty, the alumni and the business friends of Tech have worked together to make it possible. The program of the Foundation is designed to further this cooperation so that needed funds will be provided and wisely used to build a greater Georgia Tech.

WHY INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT IN GEORGIA?

N RECENT MONTHS, industrial develop-

ment has become an increasingly important subject in Georgia. Through the vigorous efforts of the Georgia Department of Commerce, our State and local Chambers of Commerce, and other industrial development groups, more and more Georgians are becoming aware of the importance of intensive work in this field. Serving to heighten further the interest of our citizens in this work is the growing seriousness of economic problems in sections of the State.

Governor Marvin Griffin has provided vigorous leadership for the State's industrial development program. He has led groups of our outstanding business and civic leaders into northern and eastern communities to tell interested industrial leaders the story of Georgia's potentials.

During his administration, the budget of the Department of Commerce has been greatly increased to take care of steppedup advertising and industrial solicitation programs. And he has encouraged the allocation of additional funds for the development of our ports and for other important projects that will increase Georgia's capacity to attract industry.

But one of the Governor's most significant moves for the long-range future of Georgia was his special $50,000 allocation to the Board of Regents to establish an industrial development research program a year ago at the Georgia Tech Engineering Experiment Station, the South's largest engineering and industrial research agency. Governor Griffin took this important step because he realized that only scientific research could solve many of the important problems facing the State in this field. Georgia's industrial development agencies needed this research to give them the answer to the questions asked by more and more industrial prospects before they decide upon a new plant location or the expansion of

an established plant. Facts like the size of the market that Georgia offers, the availability of natural and human resources and the cost of locating and operating a plant in this state are extremely important to industrialists looking for a location.

The various state and private agencies concerned with industrial development in this State are extremely proud of their significant contributions to our economic progress. But, in the past, they have been hampered by a lack of basic data that only scientific research can produce.

In the highly competitive industrial market of today, there is a limit to what can be achieved through good will and salesmanship.

One of the aims of Tech's research group is to provide the detailed information required by the basic industries needed by Georgia for a balanced economy. But this practical aim has had to wait until other, more basic problems could be solved. It was essential that the first research step be an analysis of Georgia's economy—its present strengths and weaknesses, the changes that were taking place, and its potentials for industrial growth. A special report—Georgia's New Frontiers, authored by experienced economists, John L. Fulmer and Ernst W. Swanson—just issued by Tech summarizes this analysis to date. The report clears away many misconceptions of Georgia's industrial growth and points the way toward a systematic and effective program for the fullest possible development of the State's resources.

The decision to concentrate on this analysis, important to the entire State, was not an easy one to make. No one wanted to postpone the solution of Georgia's immediate but more limited industrial development problems. But if these crucial basic problems had been ignored, Continued on page 8

Concentration on immediate rather than on longer-range problems would have resulted in greater numbers of counties and communities in desperate need five or ten years from now. By focusing on research designed to pinpoint Georgia's weaknesses, and at the same time point out the State's greatest potentials for increased wealth, the work at Georgia Tech aims at problems whose solution will mean more industry and greater wealth for more communities within the same period of time. Its work has thus complemented the important work which established groups were already doing on the urgent, shorter-range problems.

As the program expands, Georgia Tech expects to add both individuals and research teams who will spend as much time as may be needed working closely

with both State and private development groups to answer specific requests for information and analysis. Until the staff can be expanded, however, broader gauged problems must continue to receive priority.

For example, a study in progress is designed to determine the feasibility of locating a major oil refinery in Georgia.

Why should a great deal of time and money be spent on such a study when relatively few persons would be employed in the highly automated plant—when and if such an industry could be secured?

The answer is simple, but important: This is one of the so-called "breeder" industries—those which generate further industrial and economic growth. If, as anticipated, the analysis demonstrates that Brunswick or Savannah would be a likely spot to locate a refinery, other multimillion dolar installations would shortly be added to the $40 million or more plant required for the refinery operation. Such high-wage industries would add greatly

since World War II have been struck by the multitude of economic changes that have hit this State. Northerners especially are impressed They come in increasing numbers seeking the new markets in those sections of the State which have gained in income and employment. To them the fact that Georgia has enjoyed phenomenal economic progress is now an old story.

Yet the true magnitude and consequences of these changes are barely captured by even the most traveled of people. Going back before World War II, per capita income for Georgia was less than $300 a year, almost a pittance according to present ways of thinking.

At that time, for the United States as a whole, the per capita income was almost $250 more. By 1950, this gap had been narrowed so that Georgia's income was

no longer around half of the nation's; it had increased nearly 15 per cent. In 1955, the latest year for state income statistics, Georgia's per capita figure reached $1,333—72 per cent of the national figure of $1,847. Preliminary estimates place the 1956 figure at 76 per cent of the national, or around $1,450.

The gap is being closed gradually but surely.

Put in other words, Georgia's per capita income, stated in constant dollars (to take out the inflationary water of a boom age), has increased at around 5.5 per cent per year since 1940. This rate is almost twice the nation's rate of income growth.

This astonishing change from the 1930's and even the 1920's is largely related to what amounts to a complete inversion of Georgia's economic structure.

The completed research report will thus provide the State's industrial developers with a powerful weapon with which to bag a multi-million dollar industry which can be expected to continue to generate additional new industry almost indefinitely. Most such industries are now going elsewhere—to Florida.

The conclusion is inevitable that Governor Griffin made a wise decision when he asked Georgia Tech to undertake a research program which would have as its primary goal the greatest long-run returns for the State as a whole. Given this aim, the present limited staff had no choice but to concentrate on the basic research which would help all concerned with industrial development out of the jungle of innumerable specific needs which daily crowd in upon them.

turing was close to the bottom of the scale of economic importance and farming was at the top. Georgia's population was then predominantly rural. During World War II, manufacturing moved into first place as a generator of income and employment. Farming is now being forced to give way to it and to the trades and services. As late as 1940, total agricultural income amounted to 16 per cent of the total income payments of the State.

By 1950, this ratio had dropped to 11 per cent. Now the estimates give a figure barely over 8 per cent.

Manufacturing payrolls also stood at 16 per cent of the total income payments in 1940. Currently, they stand at 25 per cent, or three times the portion of income accounted for by farming. In fact, payrolls do not reflect the entire income derived from manufacturing.

Other important incomes are payments to security holders and to corporate officers or to business partners and individual businessmen. For certain kinds of firms —particularly those in which new ideas on commodities and services are being created through research and development—the return upon the investment is often well beyond the average of the industry. Consequently, in such firms and industries the income per person employed is as a rule much greater than the income per person in farming, where research on an individual basis is either slow in coming or is not feasible under persent methods of farming.

These changes in the nature of income and employment explain why Georgia's population is becoming more and more urbanized and why the State's rural population has in a number of counties dropped to near danger points. Farming is most essential to the maintenance of the well being of the city worker, but farming must be reconstructed to be maintained itself. New crops and new ways of farming are clearly needed.

In a world of many new materials and technologies no one industry can afford to stand still and rest on its laurels. For soon the industry with ideas on new things takes away from the unprogressive what has been gained. The same truth holds for a region.

All in all, what is happening is that the people of Georgia are learning one of the main secrets of economic growth: to get more income and a high level of employment the State's economic structure must be enlarged; and, particularly, the industries comprising the structure pushed to the point where they best complement each other. Farming, manufacturing, lumbering, mining, food processing, trade, services; all—not just a single industry—must contribute their shares to the total income and employment, to the extent that their resources command. Modern economic research shows definitely that the closer industry moves towards eliminating Georgia's importations of a host of products and services, which could be adequately and efficiently produced in the State, the closer the total State economy comes toward producing the highest possible income out of Georgia's own resources.

This revamping of Georgia's economy needs to be extended to all sections of

the State in some form or other. There are still large areas in which the old style economy is operating. In those sections, as a rule, per capita incomes are well below the State's average and even further below the nation's average. Employment is far from what might be possible were the resources of these sections assessed and a well-conceived program for their utilization planned and put into operation.

The case of a Chicago firm which decided against building a plant in the Southeast illustrates the importance of having research findings available. The company's executives believed there was a big enough market in this area for certain types of castings to warrant the establishment of a branch plant. Before deciding to invest millions of dollars, they wanted to check on the size of the existing and potential markets for their products. They visited several states, asking each interested industrial development group for the data they wanted. Unfortunately, no one had an adequate answer.

As a result, neither Georgia nor any other southeastern state has secured the proposed plant.

Other prospects have been lost because we lack data concerning Georgia's mineral resources. Last September a cement manufacturer was interested in the possiblity of locating a plant in a section of the State known to have limestone deposits. When the company representative learned how little information was available on the size and quality of these deposits, he lost interest quickly.

What is the answer to this frustrating situation? How can the many communities which know they have limestone, or fuller's earth, or sand, or dolomite, or monazite sands learn the value of these deposits? How can they determine whether or not the basic information available on the State's geological makeup offers potential wealth toward the building of a new industry?

The answer to these questions can be found through an extensive mineral resources program. Such a program would have two aims: first, it would determine the possible industrial uses of known deposits. Second, it would determine what additional deposits might be found by a systematic prospecting and assaying program. The pay-off for the State could be millions of dollars from just one mineral.

At least one of the big oil companies is interested in the possibility of mixing the plastics it manufactures as a refinery by-product with wood—perhaps Georgia pine—to produce a superior synthetic paneling which could be the basis of a major industry for the Southeast. This new paneling, already being made on the West Coast, is termite and mildrew proof, waterproof and fire resistant. And it can be produced in beautiful grains which make it attractive for many building and furniture purposes.

This is only one of the hundreds of possible products that might result from a large-scale forest products research program. The Herty Foundation's recent announcement of the numerous types of paper which can be made from bamboo points up a current research success. A stepped-up program could result in Georgia's gaining many new industries which would add greatly to the State's economy.

Georgia could become a steel center.

A new steel making process, which eliminates the need for coal and limestone, makes the Georgia coast a likely location for the industry's next big steel mill.

Other states also want this steel mill.

Research will play an important role in the location of this large and costly installation. Information on port facilities and potentials, on transportation, power and other costs must be collected, analyzed and presented as effectively as possible to the interested firms. The state which does the best research job will have the definite advantage.

A greatly strengthened agricultural economy could be developed through an extensive program of research into the possible industrial uses of agricultural products and by-products. Acceleration of present State research at the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station and Georgia Tech's Engineering Experiment Station could be expected to produce new products of value to established firms as

well as for the building of new industries.

Of critical importance to Georgia's continued economic growth is our labor supply. To advance as rapidly as we would like to, we must determine how to make the best possible use of our available manpower.

Georgia, like most states, has a shortage of skilled workers. Yet, despite our economic gains, many persons are leaving the State because they cannot find suitable employment. This is particularly true of tey groups like our college and university graduates. We need to determine what industries can best be developed to help keep these people within the State.

Other questions must be answered.

What skills will be required in the years ahead as industrialization and automation upgrade the State's work force? The answer to this crucial question may be that Georgia should establish a network of training schools like Southern Tech throughout the State. We know that the already serious shortage of skilled workers is expected to grow more acute in the years ahead. If ways can be found to eliminate this shortage, we can gain many high-wage plants which would otherwise go somewhere else.

The goods Georgia manufactures each year now have more than twice the value of the State's agricultural products. Manufacturing employment far exceeds the number of workers left on the farms.

For more than 15 years farm employment has been dropping at the rate of about 9,000 a year. During that same period manufacturing employment has gained an average of 9,000 workers.

Each new plant announcement emhasizes the fact that Georgia's future lies in the development of its industrial potentials. That future can be unbelivably rich. But our gains will multiply only if we expand our research activities many times. It is up to the people of Georgia to decide their own future.

HIRTEEN YEARS from now, Georgia

is expected to have a population of 4.5 million people, a personal income of 9.2 billion dollars, and retail sales of 6.2 billion dollars. Reasons for this expected 67 per cent increase in Georgia's personal income and retail sales by 1970 can be found in the recent growth trends of population and per capita income.

The natural rate of population increase in Georgia since 1950 has averaged 2.22 per cent yearly compounded in comparison with 1.6 per cent for the United 11

But Georgia's annual rate of growth has been cut to 1.2 per cent, or only 54 per cent of its natural increase, by the great loss in the State by out migration. Migration loss reflects efforts on the part of the people of Georgia to find economic opportunities which have not been available to any great extent in this State until the last decade.

Since present trends of migration loss show a decline, there is hope of stopping this population drain. This decline trend is due to the rapid rise in employment in the State's manufacturing and associated activities since 1947. The net result of these increased economic opportunities is that more people are being kept at home for jobs in Georgia.

On the basis of recent growth of Georgia's economy and that which can reasonably be expected in the future, the reduction in migration loss is certain to drop even further. By 1970, or even before, the State's net loss from migration may have ceased altogether. This highly desirable condition in population growth will occur only if employment opportunities are sufficient to keep most of the maturing young people at home. For a time in the period around 1970, Georgia should grow at the annual rate of its natural increase. And then, if economic development continues aggressively, the State may begin to gain population from other states.

Everyone knows that per capita income is rising in Georgia, and many know that it is rising more rapidly than for the United States. If trends in the relationship from 1946 to date persist, the income ratio of Georgia to the United States should be 82 per cent by 1970. The accelerated growth toward economic balance and maturity in the so-called low income areas is responsible for this rapid rise in Georgia's per capita income. Agriculture, traditionally a low income industry, is being replaced largely by manufacturing which averages substantially higher wages to its workers. This shift has been occurring throughout the United States 12

where state and local economies have been heavily dependent on agriculture.

In the underdeveloped areas in the Nation's economy, particularly rapid growth has occurred with rebalancing. This rebalancing has been carried out in wage patterns as well as in the distribution of employment. In Georgia, the low wage activities have declined or become relatively less important in two main areas.

Agriculture as a source of employment in the State has shown an absolute decline. The textile industry, which has been held steady more or less in employment for some time, has declined in relative importance because of the growth of other industries.

A ground swell beneath all of these favorable trends has been the rising level of productivity of workers everywhere.

This gain in output per man hour has averaged about 2 per cent yearly compounded in the United States over a long period of time. In recent years, gains in productivity have been higher than 2 per cent yearly. Comments by satisfied manufacturers from other states attest that gains in labor productivity of workers in Georgia have been equal to or greater than those gains over the United States. The gains of labor productivity output have been due to the rise in educational level, steady increases of investment in labor-saving machines, and growth in the division of labor. This rising productivity of labor is the basic

cause for the increased per capita income and higher standards of living in both Georgia and the United States.

Georgia's per capita income is expected to continue to rise more rapidly than that in the United States beyond the period under review. Here are the reasons why: first, the educational level of Georgia is rising rapidly, and there is an aroused public interest in even more rapid progress, both in the level and quality of education. Second, the rebalancing between agriculture and industry will continue, but more important, industry is undergoing a balancing within itself, mainly in the direction of metalworking industries. Third, with the coming of metal industries, Georgia and the South will be forced to give more attention to automation. The expected growth in the metals industries will support not only the construction of these labor saving devices but will make it a necessity in order to keep up with the rest of the country. Already Georgia has a number of companies, some locally grown, which are capable of construction of high quality automatic production equipment.

Taking all of these considerations into account and projecting them by statistical methods, Table I represents a forecast of the future course of Georgia's economy.

In order to obtain the greatest practical value from this analysis, the various industry segments of Georgia will need to translate the projections to their own peculiar situation, as has been done for motor vehicles in the last line. The forecasts given are based on projections of recent trends. To achieve them Georgia will need to continue to promote economic and industrial development at least as energetically as at present. Stepped-up activities in research and development programs not only would make more certain the projections but could push them significantly beyond those presented by the forecasts.

September 21 was his day. No matter what he does in his next three years as a Jacket quarterback, he'll never have a better one than in Tech's 13-0 victory over Kentucky.

The game was rated a toss-up by the "experts." But, the issue never was in doubt from the opening quarter.

And, although there were many Tech stars like Stephenson, Askew, SimerviUe, James, Watkins, Flowers, Nabors—this relatively easy win belonged to the slim man under the center who called a "perfect game" in the eyes of the coaches, scouts and 40,000 fans who packed Grant Field.

On an oppresively hot day for football, one in which Tech captain Don Stephenson lost 17 pounds during the game, Braselton was in there on all but eight offensive and defensive plays. He completed four out of eight passes with one going for a score. He handled the ball and the team like a vet. Someday he just might be one of Tech's all-time greats. But Fred Braselton will never be more valuable than he was on that hot September 21, 1957.

USS Bergall. Ison, Tech's ail-American end in 1939, was executive officer and Captain Hyde commanding officer when the damaged sub. a gaping hole in her side, met three enemy warships.

Their daring escape was recreated in a new television film series, "The Silent Service." Ison, now an Atlanta businessman, appeared at the close of the episode entitled, "The Bergall's Dilemma." when the series had its premiere on CBS, Saturday, September 14.

Robert E. Honer, MS '51, specialist in electronics and microwave systems for more than a decade, has been appointed chief electronics engineer at Convair (San Diego) a division of General Dynamics Corporation. Honer joined Convair in 1953 as design specialist in charge of the microwave group. His career has included color television research immediately following World War II and research work at the Georgia Tech Engineering Experiment Station.

• To our engineers falls the monumental task of developing manufacturing operations and of planning the installation of telephone central office equipment across the nation. He takes part in the second phase, General Development, after the first year on the job. In this phase he devotes nine weeks to courses in human relations, semantics, engineering statistics, electronics, measurements and instrumentation, systems circuit analysis. The third phase, Advanced Development (4 weeks per year), is available to selected engineers and is geared to the individual to help develop his creative engineering abilities; goes deeply into such subjects as magnetics, computer applications, electronic switching, radar fundamentals, feedback control systems and technical paper writing.

• Besides this company-wide program, a number of our divisions offer individual engineering courses in their own specialties. Biggest freshman class in history greets President Harrison GEORGIA TECH'S largest freshman class was the first group of students to meet their most prominent member, Dr. Edwin D. Harrison, the Institute's sixth president.

"This will be my favorite freshman class at Tech, for I'm a freshman here myself," said the president in his appearance at the YMCA Freshman Camp near Toccoa. Georgia.

The initial freshmen reaction to this opening statement by the new president was typically Tech. "Well, whÂŤre's your rat cap then, "yelled a brash firstyear man from the back of the crowd.

Dr. Harrison parried this neatly with a laugh an then won the group over with an excellent short talk on "How to study at Georgia Tech." Later Dr. Harrison made a big hit with the group by putting on a rat cap and singing "Rambling Wreck" for the first 26

time with the group of over 400 freshmen who attended the camp.

On the following Monday, Dr. and Mrs. Harrison held open house for the more than 1650 freshmen that helped swell Tech's 1957 registration to a record high of 5,627. This figure broke the 1956 record by over 200 as

Howard hughes fellowships Ten awards are open to candidates interested in studies leading to a Doctor of Philosophy or D o c t o r of Engineering degree or in conducting post-doctoral research.

Each Fellowship provides a cash award of not less than $2000 . . . a minimum salary of $2500 for summer or part-time w o r k . . . up to $1500 for tuition, books, and research expenses. . . and moving and transportation costs. Eligibility is based on the completion of one year of graduate work in physics or engineering, and qualification for graduate standing at California Institute of Technology, U n i versity of California (Berkeley), or Stanford University. Application closing date: January 15, 1958.

O n e hundred awards are open to participants w h o will complete courses leading to the Master of Science degree within 2 academic years. Tuition, admission fee, and books will be provided. During the summer they will have the opportunity to work with experienced Hughes scientists and engineers, while receiving salaries based upon their ability and technical experience.
