T long last the Georgia Tech Athletic As:ociation is going to embark on A a program to improve the seating location of season ticket holders who are Tech Alumni. True, it's a long range program, but we have the word of Howard Ector, the new AA business manager, that the Athletic Association intends to do everything in its power to carry this program out.

This move all came about as a result of the recommendation of the Special Ticket Committee appointed by the Athletic Board last J a n u a r y to look into the ticket situation. The large number of Tech graduates in t h e postwar years so swelled the alumni body that a new policy was deemed desirable to avoid alienating the affections of the alumni toward the Athletic Association and even the Institute itself. The exact r e commendation of the committee was that the Athletic Association work out a consistent program to improve t h e season ticket locations among the alumni through the years to come.

This new approach leaves it squarely up to the alumni to support the AA by purchasing their season tickets early each year if we are ever to see positive results from this program. If we do not support this program by purchasing season tickets in the formative years, it will wither and die as the AA will be forced to revert to the old first come-first served policy of selling season tickets to anyone in order to keep u p their financial standing.

Tech that has brought considerable fame and honor to the "fiats," through its participants. We are speaking of golf, the sport that gave us Bobby Jones, '22, Watts Gunn, '28 Charlie Yates, '35 and Tommy Barnes '37. All four have been in the news of late, so it might be well to recall their exploits.

Bobby Jones, the greatest of all golfers, has been in the news lately because of his friendship for the President and indirectly because of the exploits of one Ben Hogan. Once more a great controversy is being worked over by the sportswriters — this time, the greatest golfer, Hogan or Jones? Not too many years ago, it was Nelson or Jones, before that it was Little and Jones. Bobby seems to be holding his own. Disregarding nostalgia in the case of Bobby or Ben, it is always well to remember that Jones was an amateur and did not depend on golf for a living.

It is also well to recall that Bobby played with wooden shaft clubs on courses that were archaic compared to the modern day layouts. Although, Hogan must be classed as the greatest of the "play-for-pay" boys, we can't see him putting Bobby Jones in the shade.

Watts Gunn, who was the first Tech golfer to win the National Intercolligiate and who went to the finals of the National Amateur only to lose to the aforementioned Mr. Jones, has recently been named the President of historic East Lake Club in Atlanta. Watts, former Walker Cup team member now a prominent Atlanta businessman, still gives the ball a roll although he has long since given up tournament golf.

Tommy Barnes, one of Atlanta's famous golfing brothers, was runner-up in the Dogwood Tournament in Atlanta. Tommy was Southern Intercollegiate champ while attending Tech, winning the 1938 tournament in Athens.

He has since been a consistent winner in local, state and Southern tourna-

ments. Two of his brothers also attended Tech.

The fourth famous golfing alumnus is Charlie Yates, who has recently been named to Captain the United States Walker Cup Team in their matches against Great Britain in September.

Charlie, winner of the National Intercollegiate while in school and the British Amateur in 1936, has been President of the National Alumni Association for the past year, (incidentally, Bobby Jones was President of the National Association in 1932 and was a member of t h e Board of Trustees for a number of years.) Charlie played on the Walker Cup Team in 1936 and 1938, winning his singles match both times and winning the doubles in 1938 after being involved in a draw in '36. He will be a nonplaying Captain this year.

While we are on the subject of Charlie Yates, the ALUMNUS wishes to salute him for his untiring efforts as President of the Association. On other pages in this issue, you will find the statistics of the tremendous success of the Sixth Roll Call which was directed

by Charlie. He has been a great asset to the National Association while in office and a gentleman in every way as the boss. He has once again shown the "Stamp of a Champion."

From the Secretary's Desk . . . ow that you have had time to recover from the shock of the last cover (March-April) on your magazine, we will return to our stylized gold border type of cover. It probably puzzled some of our younger alumni but brought back memories to some of the older ones. It was Bob Wallace's idea to celebrate the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Georgia Tech ALUMNUS — and I thought it was well done.

Should you have the misfortune of having me or Bob Wallace as guest speakers at an Alumni Club Meeting, you should note a slight improvement in our delivery of a speech. Both of us are charter members of the White and Gold Toastmasters' Club. Members of the faculty and administration here at Tech make up the Club and I have been greatly impressed by the friendly atmosphere and quality of the members. Charlie Commander, YMCA Secretary, is the President. The purpose of the Club is to improve speechmaking; including preparation, delivery, gestures, appearance, conveyance of message and develop leadership. It really is a fine thing; I hope I'm not too old to learn.

On April 26-30, The Georgia Tech Christian Mission sponsored "Religious Emphasis Week" here on the Tech campus. Excellent speakers and counselors were on hand to promote greater interest by Tech students and faculty in their religious life. As you know, college age is the age when time seems to get more and more scarce. There is a tendency for the college student to neglect his religious life. The change from a home atmosphere to dormitory or fraternity life is a big one, and the importance of keeping in touch with God becomes increasingly important. Charlie Commander, YMCA Secretary, and a student committee, worked hard to set up a splendid program, which no doubt was of great benefit to Tech and its student body.

YOUR ASSISTANCE NEEDED On April 8 the Board of Regents, University System of Georgia, passed a resolution which will require the assistance of Tech Alumni. The summation of the resolution, which applies throughout the University System, is as follows: Any resident of Georgia applying for admission to Georgia Tech shall be required to submit certificates from two Alumni who are citizens of Georgia on prescribed forms certifying that the alumnus is personally acquainted with the applicant and that the applicant is of good moral character and a suitable person to pursue successfully courses offered at Tech. Further, each applicant must secure the same type certificate from the Ordinary or Clerk of the Superior Court in his county.

Any non-resident of the State shall submit a similar certificate from two alumni or from two reputable citizens of the community. Also the applicant must submit a certificate from a judge or court of record of the county in which he resides, certifying good moral character and reputation.

The right to require aptitude and intelligence tests is reserved.

The above is in addition to already existing requirements.

appeared in the March issue of THE LAMP, the Standard Oil Company's magazine. It was adapted from a talk given by Mr. Abrams, chairman of Standard of New Jersey's board. Although Tech is a State-supported school, many of the points brought out by Mr. Abrams apply to our problems, and we believe the article worthy of reading and re-reading.

CORPORATIONS |More a n d better education is needed if we a r e t o maintain a free society.

Men today need to know how to t h i n k ; to weigh a n d a p p r a i s e ; to achieve steadiness of vision.

A growing school of thought believes reasonable aid t o education is a justified use of t h e corporation's money.

HE public today expects corporations to be good and constructive citizens.

The people who own and manage corporations wish to meet and fulfill this public expectation. Increasing numbers of business managers, I believe, feel that corporations should not take substantial benefits from their membership in the economic community while avoiding the normally accepted obligations of citizenship in the social community.

This widening sense of social consciousness is disclosed in many ways: enlightened employee policies, openness in relations with shareholders, greater participation in community efforts. Here I want to talk about still another area, that of business contributions to educational institutions.

Present-day policy in taxation has gone pretty far in eliminating the large private benefactor, and there is little evidence that he will ever return. The accumulation and inheritance of large fortunes is rarely possible today. The corporate giver has gradually been taking on more of the load from the private giver.

There has been a question, though, whether corporate funds may properly be used for such purposes. Happily, there is a large and growing school of thought which believes that reasonable aid to worthy activities, including education, is a justified use of the corporation's money.

WAS interested to note, in a report of the Commission on Financing Higher Education, that 60 to 75 per cent of community leaders, stockholders and the general public, in response to opinion surveys, have declared themselves in favor of corporation contributions for general welfare purposes, including higher education.

It also appears that many of the legal questions which have blocked corporate giving in the past may now be melting away. Many states have passed laws clarifying the right of corporate managers to make qualified grants. Perhaps

the most difficult legal hurdle has existed in New Jersey and in a few other states where the law has been difficult to interpret and apply. Fortunately, a case has been entered in the New Jersey courts that may soon bring a clear answer to this knotty question.

Tax legislation also has, of course, influenced corporation giving. Under today's tax structure the government more than matches a corporation's dollar contributed to approved activities.

I am impressed with the common sense view of Mr. Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., chairman of the board of the General Motors Corporation, that ". . . if corporations do not intervene with generous donations, the federal government will by default be given this responsibility.

Government aid will mean increased taxes, with the final result that business will in effect be aiding . . . but without any freedom of choice."

Moreover, the Congress has lent strong encouragement to giving by corporations. Because of the nature of the present tax structure, a contribution by a corporation requires earnings roughly a quarter less than would be required if the same contributions were made out of dividends by individual stockholders with average income.

While the practice of corporate giving is growing, the record to date isn't too good. In the fifteen years that the t a x laws have permitted corporations to deduct charitable contributions up to 5 per cent of their net taxable income, their grants for all purposes, of which education is just a part, have averaged closer to 1 per cent or less, I suspect.

Figures available for three of those years, 1947-49, show this was the case.

(Even so, the total averaged $235 million a year.)

Now, if we take the figures of net profit before taxes of all corporations for the last five years, 1948-52, we get a glimpse of some very dramatic, even though theoretical, potentials. The average profit before taxes for those years was about $37 billion per year — and 5

per cent of that figure is in excess of $1% billion. I do not feel that corporations can reasonably be expected to give anything like such sums simply because the tax laws encourage it. But the figure does emphasize that in prosperous times corporate managers have ample leeway to make contributions when they believe that such contributions would constructively serve the interest of the corporation by benefiting the business community or the nation.

HE important thing is that corporate gifts should be made when the direct or indirect benefits — and I want to underscore indirect benefits — are worth more to the company than the costs after tax adjustments. On the other hand, gifts by publicly owned corporations can never be justified — no matter how small the gifts — when the motive of giving is based solely on personal associations, or is based simply on a tax allowance and nothing more.

What are these benefits? Are they only assumed, or are they real?

Education, more and better education, is needed if we are to maintain that most cherished of man's works —• a free society. More than ever before, men today need to know how to think; to weigh and appraise; to achieve the steadiness of vision and purpose that wisdom brings.

The circle of problems that besets the American people is ever widening, calling in ever sterner tones for maturity and good judgment in their solution.

Unless we have prudent and mature people on whom we can rely, great dangers are ahead for the general wellbeing of the country, and incidentally, for stockholder's investments in corporations.

The direct benefits are more evident.

The task of management is becoming increasingly complicated, requiring a wide diversity of talents and training.

We must look more and more to institutions of higher learning for the men and women we need. Corporations pay

Maintaining the private liberal arts college as a genuinely independent institution is indispensable to our way of life.

Freedom rests on the competition of free choice, both in the business world and in the world of ideas. the colleges and universities little or nothing for training the personnel which they now eagerly recruit each June. I am convinced that American business neither needs nor wants a free ride, least of all from our private educational institutions, which we know to be hard pressed financially. In my opinion, it is not good business to withhold from these institutions needed support.

Business and industry have been direct beneficiaries of American education in another way. It has given us prosperous and more valuable markets. The more effective our higher educational system and the larger the number it can serve, the greater will be the nation's earning power and the greater the consumption of commodities. I believe education has done more to create and expand markets for business than any other force in America.

It is particularly important for us to retain a strong and vigorous group of private institutions of higher learning.

The independent liberal arts college especially must be preserved in its full vigor. So-called liberal or general education is essential to the kind of free society in which business moves ahead and prospers. Maintaining the private liberal arts college as a genuinely independent institution, I believe, is indispensable to our way of life. For freedom rests on the competition of free choice, both in the business world and in the world of ideas.

American corporations would be among the first to suffer if, because of inadequate support, freedom of choice in the educational world should be limited to state-supported colleges and universities. Our intellectual resources, our spiritual and material well-being and our basic freedoms depend in considerable measure upon how well higher education performs its essential tasks.

The quality of that performance will suffer if, because of inadequate support, the private educational institutions are taken from private hands.

Having said all this, I must admit that May-June, 1953

it is no easy thing for corporation managers to know how to give to education.

The most popular forms of educational giving seem to fall into four categories: 1) Special purpose gifts to institutions in the local community; 2) Gifts for research â&#x20AC;&#x201D; usually in the natural sciences; 3) Fellowships and scholarships; 4) Gifts for general educational purposes to individual colleges, or to groups of colleges.

Each of these approaches has its merits. Each also has its limitations or unsolved problems. This is particularly true with respect to support of general education in private institutions.

SEEMS to me that the biggest reInessTmaining roadblock is that the busiworld simply does not now know enough about the "how" of giving to education. This may sound strange. But, for example, we businessmen do not know how to measure relative academic merit and performance; and, to be quite frank, some of us are not sure that anyone else has developed a really effective means of doing so.

Even though we should get satisfactory answers regarding merit, would it follow that gifts should be concentrated among the most meritorious institutions, letting the others die on the vine?

If we need, as I understand we do, all of our present educational capacity, perhaps we should aim instead at ways of bringing the quality of the less favored college up to desired standards.

In the absence of other criteria, the allocation of business grants may follow either the channel of the "old school tie," or tend to gravitate toward institutions that most closely represent the point of view of the donor. Neither of these is a satisfactory basis. Some careful attention must be given promptly to developing adequate standards to guide business policies on financial aid to higher education .

A group of businessmen have worked for some months to do something con-

structive about this situation. The group includes Mr. Irving Olds, until recently, chairman of the board of United States Steel Corporation; Mr. Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., chairman of the General Motors Corporation; Mr. Walter Paepcke, chairman of the Container Corporation of America; and Mr. Henning W. Prentis, Jr., chairman of the Armstrong Cork Company. These four, with the writer, are the incorporators of a membership corporation recently organized under the laws of the State of New York. It is called the Council for Financial Aid to Education, Inc. A few sentences from the Certificate of Incorporation of this new corporation describe its main purposes and objectives: "The purposes for which the corporation is to be formed are: To promote a better understanding by the managers and owners of American business . . . and by the members of the public, of the substantial contribution which higher education has made and is making to the effectiveness, the skill, the growth and the success of American business and to the development of this country, and to aid in bringing about a recognition by the managers and owners of American business . . . and by the members of the public, of the importance to American business and to the nation as a whole of securing adequate financial support of higher education in this country. . . .

"To serve in an advisory and cooperative capacity, both to prospective contributors and to educational institutions in connection with the formulation, adoption and carrying out of the programs of various kinds having for their general purpose the obtaining of financial support. . . ."

The Certificate of Incorporation specifies that "the corporation is not itself to distribute funds to educational institutions or to solicit contributions for such purpose." A phrase used recently by a member of the new administration in Washington also applies here. "No ninety-day miracles can be anticipated."

To apply the principles of the charter to practical working arrangements is a longer job than that. be inaccurate to say that we InewTareWOULD today seeing the adoption of a set of attitudes by corporate managers toward the place of corporations in society.

That change occurred some years ago.

But it is appropriate to predict that business management will continue to enlarge its social vision; and that business contributions, including those to education, will become an important aspect of this enlarging viewpoint. The interests of the stockholders of the corporations of America require no less.

ENGINEERING EXTENSION DIVISION A Report The Engineering Extension Division was organized by President Van Leer in 1945. Prior to that time, the Evening School and the Industrial Education Department were carrying out similar work under separate leadership. Director of this Division since its inception has been Roger S. Howell, '14, who was

head of the Evening School from 1923 to 1945. The Division now numbers four units: Industrial Education headed by Thomas H. Quigley, Evening School headed by Milton R. McClure, Southern Tech headed by Lawrence V. Johnson and Short Courses and Conferences, Directed by Charles H. Taylor. Two of these units have been added in the past five years, thereby doubling the responsibility of the Division.

The Evening School "Granddaddy" of the Engineering Extension Division and best known of its four departments, the Evening School was established in 1908 to give the people of Atlanta an opportunity to secure additional education while maintaining a full time job.

Under the direction of Dick McClure, IM '40, and his assistant, Clint China, the Evening School now offers the people of Atlanta four separate programs of education. In all four programs, Evening School classes are taught with the same high standards maintained in the day school and, in many instances, are taught by regular day school faculty members.

The College Credit program, one of the original programs of the Evening School, is designed to give working Atlantains an opportunity to take college courses during their non-working hours.

Three quarters work in the regular day school are required before a degree can be obtained through this program. (The only Bachelors degree ever offered for work exclusively in a Tech Evening School was in Commercial Science. It was discontinued when the Commerce Department was transferred to the University of Georgia.) The majority of students entered in this program take their first, second and part of their third

year in the Evening School, and then obtain a leave of absence from their job to complete their degree work in the day school. Most of the subjects in the freshman and sophomore years and many junior and senior subjects are offered in the Evening School. Other subjects will be made available in the evening classes when requested by a sufficient number of students.

Through the Adult Education program, special subjects are available to men and women of the Greater Atlanta area who desire a technical training program related to their employment or contemplated employment. Although college credit is not given for the completion of these courses, students with sufficient background to absorb them find them useful for more immediate practical purposes. A large variety of highly specialized subjects such as Architecture, Gemology, Building Construction, Radio and Television, Speed Reading, Machine Shop, Mechanical Drawing and many others are offered each quarter for interested adults. Once again, the high standards, synonymous with the name Georgia Tech, are carried out in presenting the subjects.

ated by the Evening School at the close of World War II as an aid to GI students who desired entry into Tech but lacked the necessary scholastic background for admission. This once temporary program has become a permanent one because of its popularity with the nonveteran high school graduates of Georgia. The Pre-Frosh program now has a three-fold purpose. One, it provides an opportunity for prospective students to fulfill entrance requirements; two, it provides a college adjustment opportunity; and finally, it serves as a proving ground for students dubious of their aptitudes for engineering work. Subjects offered in this full or part time program are Algebra, Geometry, English Composition and Rhetoric, Rapid Reading and Elementary Physics.

The Technical Institute program presented in the Evening School parallels the curricula at Southern Technical Institute. A student may secure his Associate in Science degree in 4Vz years of night school work, while it takes only two years to complete the same requirements at the full time school in Chamblee. Associate in Science degrees in Building Construction, Electrical Technology, Electronic and Radio Technology and Mechanical Technology are available in the Evening School as well as at Southern Tech. A student may transfer from this program to Southern Tech or vice versa at any time during his training without loss of credit.

With 45 years of continuous service to the people of Georgia and an increased enrollment of 800 for this quarter, the Evening School is looking forward to more improvements in their services and many more years of constructive education.

Unprecedented demand for engineers in the aircraft industry is imposed by the tremendous technological problems and high speeds associated with modem air warfare. Design and development of a single heavy bomber, capable of today's high performances, requires almost 20 times as many engineering hours as in World War II.

A Need lor Technicians

Southern Technical Institute The advent of electronics, supersonic aircraft, atomic energy, television and modern chemistry has produced a new technical revolution in industry. This revolution plus the growing shortages of our most readily available natural resources, both material and technical, have forced the introduction of a new member onto the American industrial team.

This new industrial man is the technician. A combination of some of the experience, knowledge and skill of both the engineer and the mechanic, the technician applies his training in mathematics, physics, English, human relations, management and his specialized field to the processes, machines, instruments and supervision of modern industry. He may serve as a lab technician or engineering associate in the laboratory; engineering aide, foreman, inspector, process specialist, specification writer or department head in the factory; or as a construction, installation, operation or maintenance specialist in the field. The need for this new type of industrial man is great. In May-June, 1953

a recent study, the Engineers' Council for Professional Development indicated that seven technicians are needed for every engineer and 35,000 of these specialists are needed in the South at the present.

The Southern Technical Institute, a unit of Georgia Tech's Engineering Extension Division, was organized in 1948 to help alleviate this critical shortage of technical personnel in the South.

Southern Tech's program is designed as a terminal program enabling graduates to go directly into industry in a specific technical position or line of activity.

Southern Tech. located in Chamblee, Georgia, offers eight different courses of study, all leading to the Associate in Science degree. In two normal school years, the student may complete the requirements for his degree in any of the following fields of technology: Building Construction, Civil, Electrical, Electronics and Communications, Gas Fuel, Heating and Air Conditioning, Industrial, and Mechanical.

Four areas of subject matter are com-

mon to all eight courses of study: Communication Skills (drawing, blueprint reading and English)—Basic Sciences (chemistry, physics and math) — Supervisory Abilities (human relations, personnel management, labor relations and supervisory t r a i n i n g ) — a n d the Technical Specialties.

In the first five years of its existence, this young ward of Georgia Tech has been fully accredited by the Engineers' Council for Professional Development and received listing in the Bulletin of the United States Office of Education as an accredited institution of higher learning. At present, nine out-of-state and seventeen in-state scholarships totaling $28,990 are available to students.

A well rounded extra-curricular program is offered to all students at Southern Tech. A student with an interest in journalism may gain experience on the Technician, the campus newspaper, or the Technician's Log, the yearbook.

Those with an interest in athletics will find some sport in Southern Tech's intercollegiate or intramural programs to their liking. Southern Tech plays a varsity schedule in basketball, tennis, golf, cross-country, baseball and track, while intramural competition between departments features touch football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, go'f and Softball. A student council, glee club, honor society and many different types of clubs round out the non-academic program.

Southern Tech is located on a campus which was once part of the Atlanta Naval Air Station. Six large buildings house the dormitories, classrooms, offices, book store, dining hall and library used by the students and officials of the school. Southern Tech, like its big brother, is co-educational and, strangely enough, both carry the same number of co-eds on the roster this quarter — two. (Fifty per cent of Georgia Tech's coed population dropped out last quarter and we are once again back to the two original ones.) The steadily increasing enrollment (this year's figures are a healthy 42% over 1952) along with its active corporation support and interest indicates that the Chamblee school is well on its way to permanency as a Southern institution.

SHORT COURSES CONFERENCES ESTABLISHED

Short

EJ Courses and Conferences Department is one of the youngest activities at Georgia Tech. This department of the Engineering Extension Division has grown to the point where it accounts for introducing approximately 2,500 outsiders to the campus every year.

Holding these Short Courses and Conferences on the Tech campus has proved helpful to both the Institute and the personnel who attend them. The Institution benefits by absorbing the experience and knowledge of the practicing engineer or business man through the work and association of the faculty who engage in the program. Industry benefits through the increased knowledge of its personnel attending the programs coordinated by the Short Courses and Conferences Department.

The Need President Van Leer recognized the need and the possibilities for this type of adult education service long before its installation. This type of service has already been proven at a number of large state universities throughout the country, and considerable evidence had begun to accumulate indicating the need for it in the State of Georgia. The amount of requests and suggestions concerning this type of adult education in Engineering and business fields in the South proved once again the old adage, "there is no age limit for the desire to learn more."

Short Courses A variety of short courses, in practically all the fields of engineering and management, have been conducted each year, running anywhere from three to thirty days in length, depending upon the problems and subject matter to be covered. It is easy to visualize the need for special courses in constantly changing subjects such as Materials Handling, Quality Control, Time Study, Concrete Design, Stress Analysis, Municipal Planning, Lubrication, Electronics, Personnel Management and Industrial Relations. To insure the best and most accurate instruction, the most experienced and best qualified instructors from Tech, other schools and industry present the short courses in their respective specialties.

These programs run from one to three days in length depending on the type and subject matter to be covered. They are initiated through requests from outside groups, and the decision on holding them is based on the need for this type conference and whether Tech has a definite interest in the proposed conference. Tech prefers to have conferences on the campus to which the school can make a definite contribution. Typical conferences held on the campus in r e cent years include: Broadcast Engineers Conference, Georgia Highway Conference, Industrial Financing and Development Conference (Southeast), Conference of Southern High School Teachers

and the Industrial Vision Conference. A number of the conferences have become annual affairs and afford an excellent means of getting all interested parties together to exchange ideas of mutual interest. As in the case of Short Courses, the conference programs are staffed with the best available instructors from both Tech and outside sources.

The Use The short courses and conferences have brought to Georgia Tech many people who would never have had an occasion to visit the campus otherwise.

Tech has gained many new friends in the engineering and industrial worlds through the activities of this department. There is no better way of showing the Alumni and the people of the State of Georgia that this is their school, and that Tech is desirous of aiding them in as many ways as it possibly can to solve the problems in their industries.

Counseling Service If you know of any high school seniors or recent graduates who are undecided about coming to Tech, why not suggest that he (or she) attend one of the counseling clinics sponsored by the office of the Dean of Students. These clinics are designed to assist the high school senior or graduate in formulating realistic educational and vocational goals.

The student undergoes a comprehensive series of psychological tests and then, through a personal interview with his counseler, learns the relationship of his test results and past experiences to various types of training and occupational goals.

Conference attendees are also given the opportunity to talk with faculty members about specific curricula problems as well as general problems facing a student entering college. If the prospective student desires to make specific plans to enter school, he may do so at the clinic.

The 1953 counseling clinics are scheduled for ten two-day periods throughout the summer from May through August.

Jobs A-Plenty Dean Fred Ajax, Tech's placement director, estimates that the demand for Tech graduates is running 75 percent ahead of last year. So far in 1953, Fred has arranged for 25,000 interviews between companies and graduating Seniors. The average salary offering this year is a cool $350 per month. planning his route and making his transportation arrangements.

This is the third year that the local Rotary organization has backed this worthy plan. In 1951 they sent one Tech student to Europe while in 1952 two made the trip. The students will stay at the homes of foreign Rotary members while in Europe and will rough it as much as possible to cut down on the expenses. This year's contingent, Dean Davidson, Alan Cooper, Lou Hochstaedter and Bob Heard were selected by the committee on the basis of their potential ability to represent Tech in other parts of the world, plus their campus leadership and point averages.

Harris honor-

The following paragraph is the summation of an interesting and educational speech given by Tech's Dean of Engineering J. W. Mason, who is now on a year's leave of absence working with the du Pont Company in the Yearin-lndustry program. This speech was on the Yil program presented on April 1 at the Newark plant of the du Pont Company.

"As an individual, I feel that I have gained much from the program. Not the least of these benefits has been a renewed faith and pride in what the engineering colleges of America are doing.

In my more discouraged moments, as a teacher and an educational administrator. I have had my faith restored by reflecting that, in spite of the defects in our work, so many hopeless looking freshmen have developed so well by the end of four years. My year in industry has extended this experience. I see evidence everywhere in the company of remarkable results achieved under very difficult circumstances, and I realize that these results are in a large measure the work of men who, a few short years ago, were those same not-too-unpromising seniors who had developed from those most unpromising freshmen. My year in industry is strengthening my belief in the fundamental soundness of our present program of engineering education. There is much improvement in detail. Dead wood must be eliminated.

New ideas and techniques must be added and, on this score, I have received a number of valuable ideas. But it is impossible to see some of the things which are being done in this company, often by men only a few short years from the classroom, without feeling that THE GEORGIA TECH ALUMNUS

our product is fundamentally sound.

However, engineering education must be dynamic and not static if it is to fulfill its mission. The "Year-in Industry" program is an attempt to aid the schools in keeping their programs abreast of the times and, in the long run, the benefits to du Pont, to the engineering colleges and to American industry as a whole, will perhaps be as great as I know that the immediate benefits are to one participant."

AST year, the Atlanta Women's Chamber of Commerce presented Tech with the Certificate of Award as winner in their annual Clean-Up, Paintup, Fix-up and Beautification Program.

Tech, the only entry to receive an award in all four classifications for 1952, has previously been presented with Certificates of Achievement by the same organization for the years 1949 and 1951.

The responsibility for this laudable advance in the beauty and cleanliness of the Tech Campus rests on the able shoulders of James R. (Bob) Jenkins, the institute's first full-time Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds. Prior to 1945, the year Bob joined the staff at Tech, the Superintendency of this department was held by a Professor as a part-time assignment.

The growth of the Building and Grounds Department has paralleled the increase in the school's physical plant, the operation and up-keep of which is the responsibility of the department.

In 1945, the total building square footage (floor space) was 692,195 with a value of $3,200,000; today, that square footage has increased to 1,500,000 and the value has grown to $15,000,000. In the past eight years, the number of employees has expanded from 80 to 175.

Bob Jenkins, a native Atlantain, attended Tech Evening School in 1931 and then entered Atlanta Law School, where he received his LLB degree in 1936. A great believer in the value of education, Bob also completed an International Correspondence Course in Civil Engineering, a course in building maintenance at Columbia University and then returned to Atlanta Law School to receive his LLM degree in 1949.

Before coming to Tech, Bob worked with his father in the construction business; with the government as an Assistant Area Engineer, Chief Building Inspector and Concrete and Reinforcing Specialist; and with Robert and Company as a Resident Engineer.

One of the founders of the Southeastern Regional Association of Physical Plant Administrators of Universities and Colleges, Bob is presently serving on the Executive Committee. He is a charter member of the Georgia Tech Toastmasters Club as well as a member of the American Military Engineers, Georgia Engineering Society, Shriners, Masons, Elks, Civitans and Sigma Delta Kappa. He resides with his wife, the former Janie McMichael, and their two children at Bojan Farm in Doraville, Georgia.

COMMENCEMENT S P E A K E R — Dr. Arthur Stanton Adams, President of the American Council on Education and former President of Neu> Hampshire University will speak at the 1953 Commencement to be held at the Fox Theater on June 15th at 9:00 A. M. Dr. Adams, holder of honorary degrees from 15 different colleges and universities, headed the Administration Section of the Navy's training program during World War II, and was also administrator for the Navy's V-12 program.

Faith to Live By University Christian Mission Week was observed on the campus during the week of April 26th. Nine outstanding speakers covered a wide variety of subjects to present a complete answer to the theme question of this year's mission, "Wanted: A Faith to Live By." The highlight of the week was Dr. Edward McCrady's address at the Presidents' Convocation on Monday, April 27th. Dr. McCrady, President and ViceChancellor of the University of the South and the "Amazing Dr. McCrady" of a recent Saturday Evening Post article, gave an inspiring speech to a capacity audience in the school gymnasium.

Leon Lassoed Tech's All-American Halfback, Leon "Muggsy" Hardeman was married to the former Miss Susan Adams of Cedartown, Georgia on April 26th. Best man, Jacket Center Dick Inman, almost missed the affair in Cedertown when he forgot his full dress suit. However, a pair of pants was borrowed from a local Doctor and a coat from a Druggist to save the day.

WHITES WHIP BLUES IN T-DAY CLASSIC 24-7 A record T-game crowd of 10,000 curious football fans filed out of Grant Field the night of April 24th convinced that the 'Jackets would not fare too badly under the new rule as long as Pepper was around.

The incomparable little ex-Brown High quarterback was the big difference as the White team took a good Blue squad apart in a repeat of last year's Sugar Bowl score. Pepper kicked a field goal, passed for one touchdown, booted three extra points, ran the Tech style T with exceptional skill and was a nuisance to the Blue team on defense all evening. The Blues, meanwhile, were plagued with three pilfered passes, one interception going for a score; a fumble at a crucial time in the contest; and a partially blocked kick that also led to a White score.

Coach Broyles' Whites started a drive the second time they got their hands on the ball. Hard running by Billy Teas and Glenn Turner carried the ball to the Blues' 12 where they finally ran out of steam. At this point, Rodgers stepped back to the 18 and put one through the uprights for the first three points of the game. Bill Fulcher, sophomore guard from Augusta, set up the next White score by partially blocking a Leland Sims punt which gave the Whites the ball on the Blues' 24. Eight plays later, Pepper passed to Co-Capt.

Sam Hensley for the touchdown. Pepper added his first extra point and the Whites were ahead 10-0. The Whites' defense was tough in the first half, as the Blues never crossed the mid-field

stripe until five plays before the half ended.

Blue head coach Ray Graves must have said some inspiring words in his half-time message, for his boys scored from fifty yards out the first time they touched the ball in the second half. Leon Hardeman returned a White punt 18 yards to the fifty to start the drive. Six plays later, Larry Ruffin scored from the Whites' four and Hardeman made it 10-7 with a perfect placement. Three of the six plays in this drive were passes from Bill Brigman to senior end Bill Sennett of Alcoa, Tennessee.

The Whites came right back with the most gratifying drive of the game from 80 yards out, following the Blues' kickoff. The key man in this drive was George Humphreys, junior fullback from Whitwell, Tennessee, who had started the game as second string fullback for the Blues and was switched to the White squad after minor injuries removed Turner and Linwood Roberts from the game. Buster's younger brother and Billy Teas gained 64 of the 80 yards in this drive, which was climaxed

by Humphreys' two-yard plunge for the score on the best play of the night.

Rodgers, whose fake to Teas on the scoring play completely fooled the Blues, added the point and the Whites were out in front 17-7.

Sophomore quarterback Jack Hall of Augusta closed out the scoring with a 44-yard sprint, carrying an intercepted Brigman pass. Pepper added his final point and the game ended 24-7. The White line, featuring Vereen, Frey,

Hensley and Trainer from last year's great defensive unit, was too much for the Blues. The standout lineman of the game, however, was the Blues' sophomore guard Franklin Brooks of Atlanta's O'Keefe High, who bids well to be another great Tech guard in the mold of Hardy, Steber, Healy and Beck.

Coach Dodd and his staff were pleased with the showing of the boys in the game and called it "the best job of the spring." Punting, a Tech highpoint of the past two seasons, will still be a problem come fall. But the availability of four good punters will do much to help ease this situation. Jimmy Carlen and Leland Sims both kicked creditably in the T-game and Dave Davis and Bobby Woolfe, both out with injuries, will be available this fall. Despite the score, it was a good ball game which should eliminate some of the pessimism that has surrounded the 'Jackets this spring.

TRIBUNE SELECTS DODD One of the great honors that may be bestowed on a college football coach is to be chosen as head coach of the AllStars for the Chicago Tribune's annual August clash in Soldiers' Field. Coach Dodd has been selected for this singular honor for the second consecutive year, making him the second coach to head up the collegians twice. Notre Dame's Frank Leahy is the other holder of this distinctive honor.

The '52 All-Stars under Coach Dodd and his staff put up a great battle before falling before the Los Angeles Rams 10-7. This year Bobby will have the services of at least three of his '52 stars when he mentors the Collegians against the Detroit Lions on the night of August 14th. George Morris, Hal Miller and Bobby Morehead automatically qualified for the team when they were selected on the Tribune's 1952 Ail-American team. Once again, Dodd will limit the squad to fifty men, an innovation of Bobby's which met with the unanimous approval of the players last year.

THE ROUGH TWENTY DAYS "Spring practice showed me one thing for sure, the boys aren't happy with the new rule." — Coach Dodd Spring training, 1953, has come and gone leaving a thick pall of gloom centered around the Athletic office. It was a disappointing and grueling twenty days capped by a very successful T-Day game on April 24th.

When asked for his comments on the success of the 'Jackets' efforts to switch back to the single platoon system, Coach Dodd, a nonalibier of long standing, replied, "The one thing that stood out in spring training was the dissatisfaction of the players with the new rule style of play. There are two basic reasons for t h i s — one, no athlete enjoys doing something that he can't do well and that's what we had to ask of the boys; two, our practice sessions had to be twice as long as they were in the past."

In this short statement by Tech's famous mentor may be hidden the answer

to the success or failure of the future football teams at the flats. Actually, the coach believes that he will field a good ball club in '53. one that will not disgrace the school while on the field. However, as Bobby pointed out at recent alumni meeting in Atlanta, the end of the streak is near, to expect another season like the last two would be living in a fool's paradise.

The coach also pointed out that the new rule hurt Tech more than most of the other SEC teams because of Tech's great reserve of specialist manpower. Some of the boys made the change over from offense to defense or vice-versa with ease, while others haven't made the transition at all. The kicking will suffer this year, and those of you who saw the Engineers last year know how much that has meant to the

team. The greatest pass defense in college football in '52 will also be hurt badly by the new rule. On the other hand, it's pretty hard to conceive of a real bad team with personnel like Hardeman, Turner, Teas, Larry Morris, Ruffin, Vereen, Sherman and the other returning stars from the '52 team. From this corner it looks like an 8-3 year with the big hurdles being Florida, Alabama, Notre Dame and Georgia.

Although the link squad only won one of their first six meets, the boys gave a good account of themselves in every match but one. Once again the 1953 story of rebuilding was heard before the season and once again the season's record verified it.

SPRING RESULTS TENNIS

THE MINORS This spring was one of the worst in Tech's history as far as minor sports were concerned. Only the Tennis team managed to hold their heads above water, as they had a won-lost record of 9-7. Some of the blame for this poor showing may be placed on the new substitution rule in football which forced Coach Dodd to rule that all football players must make spring practice.

The season had it bright spots. The 'Jackets knocked Florida out of the league lead in late April with a split of a two-game series in Atlanta and split the last series with league champs Georgia. The large number of underclassmen that Coach Pittard was forced to use this season should help the Tech cause in baseball for next year.

BASEBALL

Coach "Shorty" Bortell's tennis team bettered last year's evenup record with a 9-7 season. Two of these losses were inflicted by Tulane's great undefeated court team led by Ham Richardson. The team, once again, did as well as expected for the year, and the presence of a good group of Freshmen on the squad will help next year.

1953 was figured to be Tech's best year on the diamond in many years.

However, things didn't go so well with the 'Jackets and they wound up the season in fourth place in the final SEC standings with a won-lost record of 8-13.

Hard luck played a big part in this mediocre season. Loss of two outfielders and two infielders to various injuries hurt the team, and at one time Coach Pittard was playing an infield void of lettermen due to football practice, scholastic problems and injuries. Tech's pitchers tossed many a good game only to see sloppy infield play throw away a win. In one series of four games, the 'Jackets committed 23 errors.

TENNIS

TRACK 1953 was the worst season in the history of Tech track. The cindermen did not win a single dual meet and finished last in two triangular meets. Tech's only consistent point-getters were half-miler Hugh Tannehill and pole vaulter Dick Ralston. The track squad was small and inexperienced and not too much was expected of them this season.

MILLEDGEVILLE, GEORGIA The Baldwin County Georgia Tech Club held a dinner meeting on March 19th at the Sanford House in Milledgeville. Twenty alumni and guests were present at the affair presided over by E. Culver Kidd, prominent druggist and State Representative from Baldwin County.

Dean Griffin and Secretary Beard were the guest speakers. The Dean spun many a yarn from his famous collection and outlined the current situation at Tech. Roane gave a resume of the work of the National Association and explained how the Milledgeville Club could help the Association. The "Sugar Bowl" films were shown to wind up the meeting.

HOUSTON, TEXAS Tech's transplanted Texan, Coach Tonto Coleman, was the feature speaker at the Houston Georgia Tech Club on March 3. The genial Tonto talked on "Tech football for 1953" before a capacity audience at the Tap Room of the Grand Prize Brewery. Tonto closed out his talk by showing the "Sugar Bowl" film and the "Highlights of 1952." Honor guests at the meeting were the football coaching staffs from Rice Institute and the University of Houston.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA The spring meeting of the Greater Atlanta Georgia Tech Club was held at Druid Hills Golf Club on April 22, 1953.

Approximately 200 men gathered for refreshments, light snacks and fine fellowship. Heavy hands made short work of the light snacks, so the meeting got underway without an overfed, sleepy group.

John Nichols, CE '28, presided. He called on Howard Ector. IM '40, Business Manager of the Georgia Tech Athletic Association, to talk on the ticket situation for the "T Day" football game.

The Club had been instrumental in selling tickets for this game. Howard also told of efforts by the Athletic Board to improve the ticket situation for alumni at the regular season games.

J. Frank Willett, EE '45, gave the treasurer's report, and Horace Holleman, '41, read the report of the nominating committee. The slate was accepted unanimously. New officers are: President R. A. Coach Bobby Dodd. guest speaker, gave a very informative talk on how the present football team looked in spring practice, how the new rule would affect them and how he thought they would fare next fall. He explained that the past two undefeated seasons were possible due to Tech's reputation made by its Alumni. Coach Dodd explained that due to lack of student and alumni interest, other sports were suffering. He felt that without interest and support, scholarships could not be given in track, baseball, tennis, etc.

He closed by saying that he would continue to try to play as many men as possible, in spite of the new substitution rule, on the theory that a fresh man, though not as capable, is better than a tired man.

GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA Tech Backfield Coach, Frank Broyles, was the principal speaker at the February 23rd meeting of the Greensboro Georgia Tech Club. Over forty members, wives and guests assembled at the Mayfair Cafeteria in downtown Greensboro to hear Coach Broyles speak on Tech's '52 team and the prospects for the '53 season, especially in light of the new substitution rule. A dinner and a short business meeting preceded Coach Broyles' talk, and the film "Highlights of 1952" was shown by the Coach to wind up the affair. Burt Wilder, '21, President of the Club handled the arrangements for this successful meeting.

The recently organized Milwaukee Georgia Tech Club held their second meeting on March 2 at the Elks Club in Milwaukee. Twelve Tech alumni and their wives turned out for the combination dinner and business meeting.

Dave Emmert, '27, charter president of the club, gave an interesting talk on Georgia Tech alumni clubs, their objectives and accomplishments. The new officers elected at this meeting were Ed Collat, '22, President; Jim Winnette, '45, Vice-President and Bud Cloud, '47, Secretary-Treasurer.

when the sound system broke down middle way through the film. After the film, Coach Coleman held a very successful question and answer period with the club members to close out the program.

As an interesting sidelight of this club's activities, we would like to report that they have put out a complete directory of club members including a history of the club and the by-laws under which they operate. It is attractively bound and has all the earmarks of a professional job.

NEW YORK

The Georgia Tech Club of New York held their annual spring meeting, April 29th, at the Yale Club in New York City with 56 members and guests present. Foundation Secretary Jack Thiesen stopped off at the meeting on his way to Europe and brought the members up to date on the Foundation activities.

During the business meeting, a prolonged discussion of the financial affairs of the club resulted in the members' acceptance of a motion to change the annual dues to $2.00 a year for members out of school less than five years and $5.00 for members out of school more than five years. The following new officers were elected by those in attendance at the meeting: Hazard Reeves, '28, President; J. F. Nicholl, '27, VicePresident and Ted Powell, '29, Secretary-Treasurer. Outgoing P r e s i d e n t Jack Holman, '28, was given a standing vote of thanks for his hard work on behalf of the Club and Georgia Tech in his two years in office. The Cleveland Georgia Tech Club held their annual spring dinner meeting at the Hermit Club on April 27. Following a nostalgic dinner featuring southern fried chicken and hot honey biscuits the club held its annual election of officers.

Elected to lead the club for the next twelve months were J. C. Lemon, '29, President; George Walsh, '28, VicePresident and A. F. McDougal, '26, Secretary-Treasurer.

The meeting was closed out with a showing of the football movie, "Highlights of 1952." The next meeting of the Cleveland club will be held the night of July 17 when members will get together to eat and attend a night baseball game between Cleveland and Philadelphia.

Their assignment is to interest Charlotte area boys of high calibre in attending Tech. To this end they have brought a goodly number of boys to Atlanta for special events at Tech and to show them the school.

The next meeting of this club will be their annual two-day outing to be held J u n e 5-6 at the Mill Power Supply Company's Bridgewater Club House in Marion, N. C.

PHILADELPHIA, PENN. Self introductions and minute autobiographies by all present were the features of the annual spring meeting of the Georgia Tech Club of Philadelphia which was held at the University Club in the "City of Brotherly Love."

After the dinner, talks and business meeting, the club members and their guests enjoyed the "Highlights" movie.

The program proved to be one of the most successful ones put on by the Philly club and brought out more than the usual number of newcomers.

J. E. Yarbrough, '06, Studebaker dealer here for the past 36 years, recently retired. The Yarbrough Motor Company will continue as usual. The franchise has been taken over by Mr. Yarbrough's eldest son, J. E. "Jack," class of '34. Mr. Yarbrough will continue to make his home at 911 Springdale Road, N. E., Atlanta, although much of his time will be devoted to his three cattle farms.

Clifford Waterhouse, '08, well known contractors' equipment dealer in Mississippi, died on April 6 in Jackson, Mississippi following a brief illness. A man of wide business and civic repute in Mississippi, Mr. Waterhouse had served on the staffs of Governois Bilbo, Bailey and Wright of the State of Mississippi.

He is survived by his wife, two children and three grandchildren.

Edward B. Hook, Sr., EE '11, died March 30 in an Atlanta hospital. He was employed by the Federal government as an industrial engineer at the time of his death. Mr. Hook served as lieutenant colonel in the Corps of Engineers during World War II. Surviving are his wife, whose address is 27-13th Street, N. E., Atlanta, two sons, John A. and Edward B., Jr., two brothers and one sister.

Colonel George R. Barker, EE '17, has been named chief of staff of the Third Army at Fort McPherson. Prior to his promotion he was deputy chief of staff, Third Army. Colonel Barker won his commission in the cavalry during World War I and served as chief of staff of the 16th Corps in Central Europe during World War II. George Marshall (Pup) Phillips, '19, Civil Defense Director for Atlanta and a leading Atlanta insurance executive, died unexpectedly on May 1 at his home in Atlanta. "Pup" was one of the stars of the great Tech teams of '16, '17 and '18 and was prominently mentioned for All-American center in '18. He was Atlanta's CD Director in WW II and was called upon to carry out the job again after the start of the Korean crisis.

The Atlanta Journal, in an editorial, said of Mr. Phillips. "And now 'Pup' Phillips is suddenly dead. He will be remembered with warmth and gratitude by his fellow citizens.

The best memorial they could erect to him would be enthusiastic completion of the civil defense system for which he struggled so long and so ably."

He is survived by his wife and one son.

Colonel James W. Smith, CE '31, was recently awarded the Legion of Merit at ceremonies held at the Central Air Defense Force Headquarters, Kansas City, Missouri. The award was for outstanding performance of duties while assigned as Director of Engineering at Headquarters, ADF, Nagoya, Japan.

Colonel Smith is presently serving as Director of Installations at CADF, Kansas City, Mo. He was stationed in Japan for two years, and has spent a total of 62 months in overseas theatres.

Paul M. McLarty, '32, has recently been appointed Agency Instructor of the Atlanta Branch of New York Life Insurance Company.

He will have charge of administering the company's educational course for new reciuits. In addition, he will have general supervision of the branch's brokerage operations. He will also continue his sales promotion work of Accident, Sickness and Hospitalization insurance.

W. D. Cornwed, '28, has been named a director of the Roy D. Warren Company, Inc., which deals in real estate, mortgage loans and insurance. Mr. Cornwell started in the construction business here in 1928, and is associated with Builders Specialty Company.

R. Everette Kreeger, '28, recently opened offices at 1628 Candler Building, Atlanta, for general law practice. He received both a bachelor's and master's degree from the Atlanta Law School. Mr. Kreeger was connected with the Western Union Telegraph Company in Atlanta for more than 25 years.

Wallace, '46, is among 89 Rensselaer P o l y t e c h n i c Institute students named to Tau Beta Pi honorary society, one of the highest honors bestowed upon undergraduate engineering students. Lt. Wallace is attending Rensselaer on a special training program for members of the Navy's Civil Engineering Corps.

TOM DAISLEY, '47 Thomas F. Daisley, '47, has been appointed sales manager of WIS-TV, Columbia's recently-authorized Channel 10 television station.

His office is in the WIS building, 1111 Bull St., Columbia, S. C. Tom had previously served as sales representative for WIS radio. He joined the company in 1948. His radio career began in 1945 as an announcer at an Atlanta station while attending Tech.

Pete G. George, IE '47, was recently promoted to manager of a newly-organized manufacturing standards department at the Ford Division's Atlanta assembly plant. Pete joined the company in 1947. 100 YOUNG MEN INCLUDE 19 ALUMNI AND FACULTY Tech was highly honored in April when three of her faculty and 16 of her alumni were selected among Atlanta's 100 Young Men, a three month program co-sponsored by Time Magazine and the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.

The 100 final nominees representing over 30 fields of endeavor, were selected from an original list of 1100 Atlanta leaders under the age of forty.

A 12-man committee, headed by Tech's Vice-President Cherry Emerson, selected the 100 men on the basis of their present and potential future leadership in business and civic affairs.

Tech faculty members honored were J. R. Anthony, Comptroller; M. J. Goglia, Professor in the M.E. School and Robert E. Stiemke, Director of t h e C.E. School.

John C. Shannon, '49, recently received one of Philco Corporation's annual Achievement Awards. The Achievement Awards were established to extend recognition to members of the research and engineering division for meritorious achievement in performance oT their work during the year. Mr. Shannon, who is a junior engineer with the company, was recommended by his supervisors for the award for his effort in maintaining production of military equipments. The Award consists of shares of the Corporation's Common Stock and is accompanied by a parchment citation scroll.

Promise of a golden future Yellow uranium ore from the Colorado Plateau is helping to bring atomic wonders to you Long ago, Indian braves made their war paint from the colorful sandstones of the Colorado Plateau.

THEY USED URANIUM-Their brilliant yellows came from carnotite, the important uranium-bearing mineral. Early in this century, this ore supplied radium for the famous scientists, Marie and Pierre Curie, and later vanadium for special alloys and steels.

Today, this Plateau—stretching over parts of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona — is our chief domestic source of uranium. Here, new communities thrive; jeeps and airplanes replace the burro; Geiger counters supplant the divining rod and miner's hunch.
