As a result of the Government's interest combined with the activities of a number of the universities and colleges, alumni associations, and student groups, it is virtually assured that those in the armed forces who wish to continue their education, after the war, will have that opportunity. .

The Government plans to finance those with satisfactory educational background who apply for the resumption of their studies and for such other courses for which they may be best fitted. Academic credit for experience and training in service is also a part of the project.

Veterans of 1918 got credit when they returned; b u t the way the American colleges and universities propose to apply the credits and otherwise go about the program, this time, may be new and much better, according to an announcement by the Associated Collegiate Press, which further stated, that: "At the end of the first World War, colleges lavished credit on students returning from service. It was 'blanket credit' then. The amount depended only on time served under arms or rank at demobilization.

To the veterans, however, this enthusiasm was hardly a boon. Many were assigned to academic levels beyond their reach and promptly flunked out.

In other cases, there was no adequate recognition of increased competence.

When peace comes this time, leading educators are determined, it's going to be different.

Service men and women have at least four broad educational opportunities while in uniform. There are hundreds of technician and officer candidate schools. Almost half of all enlisted personnel go to one or another. The Armed Forces Institute, cooperating with 79 colleges and universities, offers offduty education by correspondence.

Orientation courses and informal off-duty instruction in camp recreation programs likewise have marked educational value.

The problem of educators is to appraise such educational experience objectively and to grant credit that does justice to educational standards and competence of the veteran. Machinery to do this has been blueprinted and approved by important institutions.

The plan would work simply. On demobilization, a soldier, WAAC or other service man or woman would apply to the Armed Forces Institute for examination and guidance. The Institute would obtain full information on the person's record, then test to measure educational competence and specialized achievements.

Results of the records and tests would go to the college of the applicant's choice, with recommendations for the proper placement of the student."

War History Being Compiled The publication period of the ALUMNUS closes with this issue, until September. In the meanwhile, however, extensive work will again be done during the summer in securing and compiling historical, personnel data of World War II, in addition to the usual duties and placement work of the Alumni Office.

A request and an information blank is carried on one of the last few pages of this number, for the use of those who may be in position to send in data on Tech alumni who are in the armed forces. Any help that may be given the alumni office in this undertaking will be greatly appreciated.

Frank A. Hooper, 1916, Becomes Superior Court Judge F r a n k A. Hooper, Jr., Ga. Tech 1916, LL.M., partner Hooper, Hooper and Miller, Attorneys, and assistant city attorney, was formally inducted as Judge, Fulton County (Georgia) Superior Court, on Monday, May 17.

Judge Hooper formerly served an appointment as Judge of the State Court of Appeals and was a representative from Fulton County in the Georgia State Legislature, 1925-1928.

He is a member of the Georgia Tech Alumni Board and has just been unanimously nominated, along with other nominees similarly named, as an officer of the Georgia Tech National Alumni Association.

Succeeding Judge Bond Almand, who was appointed to the bench following the death of J u d g e Humphries, the new judge of the Fulton Superior Court was elected for the unexpired term of J u d g e Humphries, in the regular elections last fall.

J u d g e Edgar Pomeroy presided at the impressive induction ceremonies; he introduced Harllee Branch, Jr., president of the Atlanta Bar Association, who presented Judge Hooper. The latter followed with a fine and sincere speech

Second Graduation of 1943 Class

Alumni Attain High Positions

A number of entertainments and celebrations are planned for Georgia Tech's second streamlined commencement of 1943, over the week-end of May 31.

On Saturday night, May 29, the regular senior dance will be held. Dr. Brittain, President of Georgia Tech, will entertain the seniors and their families at an informal tea in his home on Sunday, May 30, it was also announced.

Graduation exercises on Monday, May 31, will be the big event on that day. About 80 co-operative and 60 regular students will be graduated at the time; a large majority of whom will go into the armed forces of the U. S., and the others, into essential industry.

On Commencement Day, February 1, there were 240 seniors who received their diplomas; these, with the 140 May 31 graduates, comprise a total of 380 to finish at Georgia Tech, this year.

Christopher F. Hammond, Jr., B.S. in M.E., 1934, of Savannah, Ga., was elected President of the National Association of Truck-Trailer Manufacturers at the annual May meeting of the organization in Washington, D. C.

Civilian Courses Will Continue

Henry McAlpin Schley, B.S. in C.E., Ga. Tech, 1919, and B.S. in Arch. M. I. T., 1922, a member of the Columbia University administrative staff since 1942, has been appointed Comptroller of the University, a new office created by the Columbia board of trustees, it was recently announced by Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, President of the New York institution.

Dean Skiles recently expressed every assurance that courses for civilian students would continue at Georgia Tech, under the direction of the regular faculty. In fact, civilians are expected to comprise one-third of the number of students, with the A r m y and Navy students each comprising a third.

The civilian students will be deferred every six months until they graduate, provided they take approved courses and keep up a passing average. No students taking Industrial Management, Textile Engineering, or Architecture, however, will be deferred, it was announced.

A committee has recently been appointed by the Executive Board to secure adequate housing, where needed, for the new civilian students, since the Army and Navy will take over the dormitories.

Mr. Hammond is Vice-President of the Steel Products Company, Savannah, Ga., nationally known manufacturers of Great Dane trailers. The company is handling some large trailer contracts for the Government, in addition to its important work on other essential products.

Mr. Hammond's election is a well-merited recognition of his efficient and excellent services to his company and to the heavy-duty trailer industry, in general.

The comptroller's new responsibilities include the co-ordination of non-academic business of the university's faculties and services. He had been coordinator of the department of building and grounds, the office of purchasing agent, residence and dining halls and the student athletic fields.

Mr. Schley is a native of Savannah, Georgia, fortyfive years old, and was formerly construction manager of Rockefeller Center.

Nominations for National Officers of the Georgia Tech National Alumni Association, covering the year 1943-'44, were closed on April 15, in accordance with the alumni ballot as published in the March A L U M NUS; and it is a pleasure to announce your unanimous selection of the following alumni for the terms beginning September 1, 1943: For President: C. A $15,000 fund was most generously bequeathed to Georgia Tech, among similar liberal bequests to other institutions, through the will of the late Mrs. Clarinda P. Lamar, widow of the Hon. Joseph Rucker Lamar, one-time associate justice of the United States Supreme Court, which was recently filed for probate in the Fulton County, Georgia, ordinary court.

The will, dated March 6, 1942, names William P. Lamar, James F. Alexander and Philip H. Alston as executors.

The Georgia Tech fund is to establish the Philip R. Lamar research in cottonseed products.

Institutions and individuals were bequeathed more than $125,000, through the terms of the will, it was announced.

Exceptional business and civic leader, with state and national prominence. Active alumnus in college and alumni affairs. He has been most cooperative in accepting interim appointment while Lieut. Chas. R. Yates, former treasurer, is in the U. S. Navy.

These retiring executives have done much for Georgia

Prominent Faculty Leaders Commissioned in U. S. N. R. Dr. Phil B. Narmore, B.S. Ga. Tech, 1925, and Ph.D., Univ. of Michigan, 1938, and Professor Fred W. Ajax, M.A. Emory University, both left Georgia Tech recently to enter t h e U. S. Navy as commissioned officers.

These two prominent leaders have been outstanding during and since their respective under-graduate days.

Dr. Narmore was Professor of Mechanics and Engineering Drawing; and, in addition, he has always been most active in scholastic and student affairs.

He has been Assistant to the Dean of the College for more than a year, faculty advisor for the Georgia Tech Engineer from its beginning, and faculty advisor, also, for the Blue Print over a period of years.

Professor Ajax was Assistant Personnel Director and Assistant to the Dean of Men; and had previously been a Professor of English at Tech, as well. He did an excellent job in all departments and was also very prominent as the faculty advisor for the Anak Senior Society and the Yellow Jacket magazine.

Alumni Office Now In UY" Bldg.

An exodus from Swann Hall and from Knowles Dormitory began over the week-end of May 1, as it was necessary for the Navy to have the buildings at once for remodeling in order to help house the Navy trainees who will attend Tech, beginning J u l y 1, in addition to those of that service who are now in the college.

The arrangement caused a wholesale moving of departments from Swann Hall; and, of course, the complete regular student evacuation from Knowles Dormitory. Both buildings will be made into modern dormitories.

Classes formerly held in Swann have been moved to various places on the campus. The offices of t h e Economics and Social Science departments have moved to the ground floor of the old shop building; and the office of the Modern Language department is on the second floor of the same building. The Industrial Education offices moved to the Civil Engineering building; and the Personnel Department is in the Ceramics building.

The Alumni Office moved to more spacious quarters in the Ga. Tech Y. M . C. A. building, corner of North Avenue and Fowler Street. The offices are on the second floor, in the northwest corner; they are large, comfortable, and conveniently located for alumni visitors, graduate procurement officials, and all. The new telephone number is Vernon 8540.

Commissioned Lieut. (j.g.) U.S.N.R. Recently resigned and departed for V - 7 naval training at Columbia University, New York City.

Summer Term Begins July 5 Examinations for the spring semester, concluding the regularly scheduled work for that period, will be held May 26-29. This will be followed by the spring graduation of about 60 regular and 80 co-operative students on May 31. The first Commencement Day of the year, under the accelerated program was held on February first, as previously published.

Registrations for the summer term are planned for the time between J u n e 28 and July 3; and the semester is to begin on J u l y 5.

The following schedule was submitted by the faculty advisory committee on the foregoing: May 26-29—Examination for spring semester.

May 31—Graduation. Approximately 60 regular and 80 co-ops will graduate at this time.

J u n e 28-July 3—Registration for all students ex-

cept new freshmen. No one will be able to register until this time.

J u n e 29—New freshmen register.

J u l y 5—Classes begin for everyone.

The semester starting the fifth of J u l y will close October 23. Registrar Chapin stated that it was too early to say how m a n y n e w freshmen there would be this semester, but a fairly large class is expected.

No figures have been released as yet on the number of non-military students returning; but they may comprise about a third with the majority of the enrollment, however, composed of the Army A. S. T. U. and the Navy V-12 men, a large number of whom are Ga. Tech upperclassmen, formerly of the Ga. Tech Enlisted Reserve Corps.

Citations and Service Mentions Ensign Jack W. Adams, B.S. in Chem. Engr., 1942, now on duty in the Pacific, writes that he frequently sees numbers of Georgia Tech men in his area; and, in keeping w i t h his college activities, h e expressed particular interest toward his part in the annual Anak award to some member of the faculty.

Lieutenant Frank W. Allcorn, U.S.N.R., of Atlanta, B.S. in I.M., 1941, has been awarded the Navy Silver Star for contributing "greatly to t h e sinking of an important amount of Japanese shipping," as announced by Admiral C. A. Lockwood on May 3.

Ensign Robert E. Becht, U.S.N.R., 1942 M.E., of Decatur, Ga., was recently home on leave. He states t h a t t h e fleet in the Pacific is constantly growing and that it is more t h a n a match for the Japs in every respect. H e participated in the highly successful South Pacific engagements of October 11 and November 13, and saw the sinking of t h e U.S.S. Wasp and t h e U.S.S. Atlanta.

Ensign F. M. "Bevo" Bristol, U.S.N.R., B.S. in I.M., 1942, has recently written home stating that he is a shipmate of Ralph Whittaker, '42, and Bill Hagler, '42, and added that they had met up with Commander Burton Davis, formerly stationed at Georgia Tech, skipper of an important tanker. On his trips he has also seen Ensigns J. O. Edwards, Dick Peterson, and Edgar De Jon, all of Georgia Tech, in some of the Pacific islands.

Captain Robert E. Brown, U. S. A r m y Air Corps Pilot, B.S. in I.M., 1938, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, in accordance with notifications in a letter from Lieut. General George C. Kenney to Captain Brown's parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. Earl Brown, of Atlanta, Ga. The decoration was for "extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights in the Southwest Pacific area from September 26, 1942, to February 13, 1943." Captain Brown participated in more than 50 operational missions including interception flights against enemy fighters and bombing planes.

Lieutenant M. Guyton Christopher, U. S. A. Air Corps Pilot, Ga. Tech 1940, was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action over the Gasmata shipping lane, New Britain, on December 1. An announcement of Lieutenant Christopher's death was carried in the March issue of the ALUMNUS. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Christopher of Decatur, Ga., and his mother will receive his silver star award.

Lieut. E. R. "Red" Collins, U.S.N.R., B.S. in I.M., 1938, former star Jacket blocking back of East Point, Ga., is handling an interesting assignment as operations officer of a PBY combat squadron, and is stationed at an Eastern port w h e r e he is helping to r u n a lot of "interference" for Uncle Sam's merchantmen.

Lieutenant Raleigh E. Drennon, U.S.N.R., B.S. in Gen. Sci., 1929, and Lieut. Luther Z. Drennon, U.S. N.R., B.S. in Gen. Engr., 1937, sons of Alderman Raleigh E. Drennon of Atlanta, are both seeing interesting service in the Navy.

A member of t h e Naval Reserve, Lieut. Raleigh Drennon transferred to t h e Seabees, last spring, and is now at a Pacific location, where he sees engineers from Georgia Tech, ever so often. Raleigh Drennon, it will be remembered, was alternate captain of the 1928, J a n u a r y 1, 1929, Tech Rose Bowl team and was on a Grantland Rice's All-America team, in addition to practically all other All-America and All-Southern teams.

Lieut. Luther Drennon was also on Tech's football teams. In a recent number of "Habit," the Naval Air Station publication at Hutchinson, Kansas, there was a sketch of the lieutenant and an article about his recent assignment as aide to the executive officer of the station.

Staff Sergeant Joe T. Holleman, B.S. Comm. 1929, A.P.O. No. 715, care Postmaster, San Francisco, California, has also r u n into some of t h e other good old "Ramblin' Wrecks" from Georgia Tech. Joe had a Navy commission all but in his grasp; however, something like one-half inch-short in height stood in the way. He wouldn't be dismayed and went on into the service, regardless, and is now coming u p t h e hard way in the Army, somewhere in the South Pacific. Popular and active in college, Joe was on the swimming team for four years and was captain in 1929, his senior year.

Lieut. Robert L. "Bob" Ison, U.S.N.R., B.S. in I.M., 1940, who has been in submarine service ever since his graduation, practically, was at his home in Atlanta on leave, during May. Bob was on the football team for four years and was All-America end on t h e Georgia Tech team that defeated Missouri in the Orange Bowl on J a n u a r y 1, 1939. He has steamed thousands of miles on "sub" duty and is enthusiastic about his work. Other than being the executive officer, navigator, electrical and engineering officer, he states that he hasn't much else to do but to ride around..

Major Gerald Johnson, Jr., B.S. in C.E., 1939, writes from "somewhere in China," that Georgia Tech is well represented in the F a r Eastern Area; and further stated that some time ago he met up with a number of his "Ramblin' Wreck" friends. He is stationed with Major L. V. Dawson, B.S. in C.E., 1920, of Charleston, S. C , and while in India he saw Capt.

E. K. Graham, B.S. in M.E. 1933; Capt. Robt. Earl Chan, B.S. in Chem. Engr., 1940; Capt. Ben S. Lowry, Jr., B.S. Engr., 1941; and Lieut. Hubert L. Nolan, B.S. M.E., 1940.

Ensign Geo. W. Morris, U.S.N.R., B.S. in M.E., 1943, wrote Commander Geo. Griffin, B.S. in C.E. 1922, at Tech, that he had a "get together" on the West Coast, recently, with Lt. (j.g.) Wm. H. Barnett, Archt. '41; Ensign Robt. B. Ingram, '43; Ensign Robt. C. Muir, Elect. '43; and Ensign Ben Hall Wolcott, Mech. '43.

The occasion was in honor of Ensign Ben Wolcott in celebration of his farewell to bachelor life.

Lieut, (j.g.) Jack E. Nettles, U.S.N.R., B.S. in C.E., 1941, was recently at home in Atlanta, after going into North Africa for the first landing at Safi. H e stated that the French were firing "for keeps," at the U. S. ships, before they were overcome. Nettles is a disbursing officer and was on the football teams at Tech, including the Orange Bowl team of J a n u ary 1, 1939.

Rivers, U.S.N.R., B.S in M.E., 1942, wrote from a Pacific island for detailed information and to express his sincerest thoughts on the death of his former roommate, "Gold Star" alumnus Lieut. J. J. Fields, 1942. Lieut. Rivers had read an account, in a copy of the Sept.-Oct. ALUMNUS, of the death of Lieut. Fields in an airplane crash. Lieut.

Rivers also stated t h a t the Georgia Tech contingent is doing a "bang u p " job, everywhere in the Pacific, and t h a t he is working along with several of them himself.

Guadalcanal, related non-informative but strenuous experiences about the top side of a supply ship. He watched the unfortunate sinking of the Astoria, Quincy, Vincennes, and the Australian cruiser Canberra, on August 9, 1942. He has also witnessed the decided turn and victories of the U. S. forces, and considered that the American supply lines are pretty well open to the Southern Pacific fronts.

Commander M. R. Sanders, U.S.N.R., BJ3. in M.E., 1918, former telephone official, builder and commanding officer of the Mayport, Fla., Naval Section Base, Inshore Patrol, and his efficient group of officers and enlisted personnel were featured in a onepage article and picture section in the Atlanta Constitution of Sunday, April 25. Other Georgia Tech men mentioned in the command, are: Lieut. Frank B. Wilson, U.S.N.R., B.S. Comm. 1932; Lieut, (j.g.) Jack F. Glenn, U.S.N.R., B.S: Gen. ScL, 1932; Ensign CM. Flynt, U.S.N.R., B.S.I.M., 1939; and Bos'n D. J. Bates, formerly with the Atlanta reserve unit for a period of years at the Georgia Tech Naval Armory.

Lieutenant Charles E. Southern, U.S.N.R., B.S. in Comm., 1933, was the Lieut, (j.g.) commander, at the time, of a gun crew on a U. S. merchant ship that sank a Jap submarine with four well-directed shots, after his own ship had been torpedoed and strafed, as reported in San Francisco, Calif., on February 24.

The action came as the first announced sinking of an enemy sub in the Pacific by a gun crew of a merchant vessel, it was stated. The merchant ship, itself, had to be abandoned after the sub went down; however, all hands "stood by" and were rewarded when their ship proved its stamina by staying afloat. The ship's crew and its gun crew boarded their vessel with all hands after a night in boats and on rafts; and the ship reached port and is in service, today, it was announced.

Lieut. Southern was a most popular student at Ga. Tech, and was a member of the football team during his entire time in college; he was also on the basketball, baseball and track teams. He entered Tech from Rogersville, Tenn., in 1929, graduating in 1933, as mentioned.

Lieutenant- Dean Spratlin, U.S.N.R., B.S. in M.E., 1939, back home in Atlanta, during the latter part of April, on leave from submarine duty in the Pacific, told some most interesting and also some humorous stories of the war; nothing whatever informative, of course, but plenty entertaining. Like all others who serve on the "pig boats," he is enthusiastic about the duty, and, at sea, he shares in the bearded and informal dress of the "dolphin-winged" men; who, however, are always alert and ever efficient, as their glorious records have shown and will forever continue to bear out.

'Gene Turner, Tech's immortal and really traditional former Y. M. C. A. head and founder, sends in a brief word from a section of the States that he has been transferred to "Somewhere in India." He has been sharing the days with Captain Garnett J. Giesler, B.S.E.E., 1932, formerly stationed at Georgia Tech, and Captain Ben S. Lowry, Jr., B.S. Engr. 1941, both of whom were subjects of a complimentary story in the local army publication, "Bull News," as issued "Somewhere in India." Lieut. James A. Georgia Tech, among a host of others, is very proud of the excellent work that is being done by its alumni through their "E" award and other achievements in essential industry, toward the "winning of the war."

Glowing accounts in connection therewith have been carried in the press and other publications, throughout the nation; and it is a genuine pleasure to carry a summary, at least, of the announcements in the ALUMNUS, under the heading of this article, as was started in the last issue, and to offer the best of congratulations to all concerned. * * * * On April 28, the Army-Navy award for Excellence in War Production was presented to the men and women of the Barnhardt Manufacturing Company of Charlotte, N. C. The company is one of the largest processors of raw cotton in the South, and serves the highest grade of purified cotton, as its principal product, for hospital, home, and industrial uses; and the Army-Navy "E" Award is a highly deserved recognition for the company's outstanding production for the armed forces, Red Cross, and other war services.

Officers of the company are: T. M. Barnhardt, Sr., President, who founded the business in 1900; J. C. Barnhardt, Vice-President, Ga. Tech 1932, and B.S. in T.E. North Carolina State, 1932; C. A. Three Army-Navy "E" production awards were presented on January 26 to the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company (subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation), and its employees in the Birmingham, Ala., district, at the Ensley Works, Fairfield Steel Works and Bessemer Rolling Mill, specific recipients of the honors.

President of the T. C. I. & R. R. Co. is Mr. Robert Gregg, B.S. in M.E., 1905, at Georgia Tech, M.E. Cornell, 1906, and Doctor of Laws, Tusculum College, 1942. Mr. Gregg received the Army-Navy "E" Flag award, in each case, for the employees and the company.

Accepting the "E" pins in behalf of their fellow employees were Thomas J. Outlaw, at Ensley; Thomas M. Howard, at Fairfield; and Ralph W. Armstrong, at Bessemer.

CCC Buildings Moved To Campus According to a plan submitted by Lieut. Colonel John B. Day, stationed at Georgia Tech, application was made to and approved by the War Man Power Commission for the removal of thirteen CCC buildings from Camp Rydal, Georgia, to the Tech campus for use by the Army trainees.

The erection of the temporary but substantial buildings by the trainees and others, has been completed; and the housing will be used for reserve rooms, recreation, study, and also dining room facilities, if need be. corned greetings from himself and the others to all of Tech and other good friends. * * * (Editor's Note: The foregoing items have all been given out in Government releases and dispatches and by press reports, and no individual units are mentioned. He is now stationed at the Aviation Base in Pensacola. The marriage is t o take place in May, after Cadet Lancaster's graduation.

An engagement of interest is that of Miss Kitty Mae McCrary to Cadet Clinton Griffin. Cadet Griffin attended Georgia Tech with the class of 1944. Former Student Excels At M. I. T.

On College Sports

Word has come to Dr. M. L. Brittain to the effect that Holton E. Harris, who until recently was an honor student at Georgia Tech and is now at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has received signal honors at that institution. He was appointed Cadet Colonel commanding the signal corps regiment. He also teaches radio theory at that school and is the president of a radio club which has constructed 175 short wave radio stations in the Boston area. This club will have charge of all radio communications in the Boston area in event of an emergency.

Added interest is connected with the case of Mr. Harris since he is the grandson of Hon. Nat E. Harris, who is one of the founders of Georgia Tech and for many years during his lifetime was Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Young Mr. Harris' home is at 1026 Erie Street, Shreveport, La., where he resides with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Harris. The latter, Mr. Dave W. Harris, is the son of Hon. Nat E. Harris; he is a graduate of Georgia Tech in E.E., 1912, and the Executive Vice-President of the Arkansas Natural Gas Company and Subsidiaries, at Shreveport, La.

It is always a matter of interest and uplifting morale for campus publications and personnel to have the pleasure and honor of being quoted by the press; and the following editorial from the Atlanta Journal of May 7 is greatly appreciated and quite significant. The editorial states: "A letter from a Tech senior to The Technique, the campus newspaper, presents a suggestive sidelight on the problem of intercollegiate athletics which now is perplexing our higher schools. The student writes: 'I am a senior who has taken part in a minor sport for four years. It is with the greatest of appreciation that I now write this letter.

'For my stay at Tech you have furnished me and my teammates with a good place to practice, good equipment and worthy opponents. It is with your help that I have learned to enjoy competition and to fight cleaner. For the fellowship, the trips and the good clean fun, I will be forever grateful.'

"The letter comes at a time when the Selective Service authorities are dismayed at the high percentage of physical incapacity among the youngsters of draft age—a condition which is blamed on several factors, among them the increasing tendency toward soft living among the American youth.

"Where the colleges as a whole seem to have failed in their physical education programs is in the emphasis put upon getting a winning football team at the expense of a broad system of competitive athletics for all students.

"At its recent stage of development, football has come to be a sport so important in its commercial and sentimental aspects that the players are recruited from hither and yon in a manner as coldly professional as that employed by organized baseball. These recruits already are crack athletes, and the resources of large coaching staffs are utilized for the purpose of painting these lilies of sports and welding them into a successful team.

"The college with a broad program calculated to enlist the activities of the general run of students in the competitive sports for which they are best equipped is one which does not permit t h e overemphasis on winning football to obscure its vision.

"That Georgia Tech is such an institution is attested by a visit to the campus where on any day in the year one may observe hundreds of young men preparing for or playing games which develop the Four Esses of virile manhood—strength, speed, stamina, and spirit. The letter quoted is one testimonial of t h e gratitude the young men feel for such a program."

Tech's World War II History As formerly published in the A L U M N U S , Georgia Tech is very proud of its many alumni who are in the armed services of the nation; and Tech, together with the Alumni Association, desires very much to have the correct historical data of each alumnus in the service.

The cooperation of those concerned and all other alumni, wives, parents and friends, is kindly solicited in keeping the alumni office informed as to records, rank and promotions, in this important undertaking.

Georgia Tech's war record stands among the highest in the nation as to numbers in the armed services and their respective ranks, training and efficiency; in addition to the very important and full war work of the college. Our war record information has proved most interesting since the very beginning of its publication in the September, 1941, A L U M N U S , and w h e n the War Directory is compiled it will be an invaluable source of Georgia Tech history.

Usry, M.E. 1925, is Manager of the Trane Company in Baltimore, Md. Robert Lamar "Molly" Williamson, B.S. 1927, has been Automotive Adviser with the 130th Infantry, 33rd Division, since May 15, 1942.

'Gold Star" Alumni Master Sergeant Sterling A. Cox, Jr., U. S. Army Air Corps, B.S. in M.E. 1917, of 2120 Beecher Circle, S.W., Atlanta, Ga., was killed in action, Pacific area, on December 28, 1942, according to a notice recently received by his mother, Mrs. Sterling A. Cox. Sergeant Cox had previously been reported as missing in action.

His family was also notified that Sergeant Cox had been awarded the Purple Heart for "military merit and for wounds received in action resulting in his death." Among his other honors and distinctions, he was a veteran of the first World War, in which he served overseas with the Eighty-second Division.

Aviation Cadet John Hicks Dumas, former Georgia Tech student, class of 1944, of Talladega, Ala., lost his life in a plane crash at the Coffeyville, Kansas, Army Air Field, on April 14. At the time of his death, he was a cadet lieutenant acting as adjutant of his squadron. Dumas was a popular campus leader at Georgia Tech, and was scheduled to finish his basic air training on April 27.

Captain Maurice F. Hooper, U. S. Army Air Corps, 1941 Ga. Tech, popular track star, lost his life in an airplane accident in the South Pacific war area on April 23. The information was contained in a recent message to Captain Hooper's parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Hooper, 496 Clifton Road, N.E., Atlanta, Ga. Captain Hooper entered the service about three years ago and finished his aviation training at Maxwell Field. He was an Army Air Corps operations officer, in his area, at the time of his death.

Lieutenant Robert H. "Bobby" Pair, Jr., A r m y Air Corps pilot, 1942 Ga. Tech, popular and brilliant football and track star, was killed in an airplane accident at Oklahoma City, Okla., on May 9, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Pair, of Atlanta. "Bobby" Pair was a star wingback at Tech when the Jackets played Missouri in the 1940 Orange Bowl game. He left college at the end of his junior year to enter the A r m y Air Corps and received his wings last May; since then he had been assistant operations officer at Alliance Field, Neb. He was on a routine flight to Oklahoma City at the time of the accident.

T.C., during his senior year. *>\ First Lieut. Thomas N. Warren, Jr., B.S. in I.M., 째A 1940, of Macon, Ga., has been reported lost in action in the Southwest Pacific, since August 7, 1942. Outstanding in campus activities, Lieut. Warren went into service not long after his graduation. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for gallantry in action at Midway and Wake Islands. His mother, Mrs. T. N. Warren, Sr., lives at 1781 Napier Avenue, Macon, Ga.

Missing In Action Lieutenant (j.g.) Edward S. Parks, Jr., U.S.N.R., B.S. in I.M. 1941, popular Tech leader, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Parks of Charlotte, N. C , has been reported missing during submarine action in the Pacific, as reported on April 22. Lieutenant Parks went into naval service in June, 1941, and had been stationed in the Pacific since November of the same year.

Gene Turner Interviewed in India Lyman Hoover, International Y Secretary and colleague of 'Gene Turner, has just completed an airway journey from Chungking to the United States.

He reports that he stopped over in India and had a two-day visit in one of the most important training centers in the world. In this camp are large numbers of American army men giving their time, energy and experience to the intimate and detailed training of Chinese troops which will greatly strengthen the efforts of China as one of the important members of the United Nations. Mr. Hoover reports that he saw and interviewed three Georgia Tech men there— Garnett J. Giesler, Ben Lowry and 'Gene Turner.

The first two are officers bearing training responsibilities, giving of the knowledge they acquired in their years of study at Tech, and 'Gene Turner is working with a group of Chinese "Y" secretaries who are "morale builders" in the ranks of these allies and coming soldiers who are being trained.

The three Tech representatives "somewhere in India" agree that the stronger we can make the hands of China the less will be the demands made on resources and life in the United States. They are doing an important part in one of the most unique experiments any nation has ever attempted in war time before. It is unique, among other things, as an experiment in understanding and international cooperation.

Tech Researchers Awarded Funds Funds were recently awarded by the University Center Research Committee for research to be carried out in Georgia schools.

Professors Spicer and Hutchinson, of the Chemistry Department, and Professor Feldstein, of the Physics Department, were given the Georgia Tech awards by the University Center which administers the funds in Georgia for the General Education Board of the Rockefeller Foundation.

Professors Spicer and Hutchinson are doing research on "Isotopic Exchange in Liquid Ammonia."

They received $425.00 to help with their work.

Professor Feldstein was granted $500.00 to continue his work on the "Magneto Optic Method of Chemical Analysis." This method was devised by Professor Allison, head of the Alabama Physics Department, in 1929. Feldstein received instructions from Professor Allison.

Student Wins Beaux-Arts Award Dick Power, senior architectural student, has been awarded a first-place medal by the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design of New York for work done on a class A-IV architectural design problem. Power's drawing received the highest rating possible in a nation-wide contest.

The particular problem assigned to the Tech Architectural Department was that of a modern plastic plant, and the contestants had to submit detailed colored drawings as finished products for judging.

Schools from all over the nation, cooperative members of the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, entered problems in this contest, and Power's work was rated as high, if not higher, than any other drawing submitted.

Three other Tech seniors also received high ratings in this contest. F r a n k R. Hand will receive a secondplace medal while Robert E. Wachter and C. Malcolm Bailey were given mention certificates.

Tech Wins All Dual Meets

Comer Weaver, sprinter and hurdler, shown winning the 100-yard dash, in the dual meet with Vanderbilt. Tech won all dual meets, this season, and was runner-up with Auburn to L.S.U. in the S.E.C. meet. Auburn and Tech cut each other's points to 4 6 while L.S.U. annexed 5 0 . Weaver was Tech's high man for the season with a total of 4 1 Vi points.

Winning all dual meets and tying for second place in the S.E.C. meet, Tech's track team enjoyed an almost perfect season.

Bill Sanders and Ed. Ryckeley were co-captains of the team. Those awarded letters and their total points for the season are, as follows: Weaver, 41%, Duggan 32, Borum 32, Sanders 31, Prokop 26, Kuhn 24, McDonald 23, Walker 17V2, West 17, Ryckeley 17, McGee 16, Power 15, Lewis 14, Blank 12V2, and Stillwell, Davis and Tom Jones.
