Girl Scout Law

Girl Scout Promise

I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

What sets us apart? The Girl Scout Program! Have you ever wondered: “How do I build girls of courage, confidence, and character?” The answer is as simple as 1-2-3! 1. Know where you're going before you start: Become familiar with the five outcomes we want girls to achieve through Girl Scouts:

Develop a Strong Sense of Self:

Promote Positive Values:

Girls have confidence in themselves and their abilities, and form positive identities.

Girls act ethically, honestly, and responsibly, and show concern for others.

Foster Healthy Relationships:

Seek Challenges: Girls learn to take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from their mistakes.

Girls develop and maintain healthy relationships by communicating their feelings directly and resolving conflict constructively.

Learn Community Problem Solving: Girls contribute to the world in purposeful and meaningful ways, learn how to identify problems in the community, and create “action plans” to solve them.

2. Offer activities from the four Program Pillars: S.T.E.M.:

Outdoor:

Science, Technology, Engineering, Math: Activities help girls develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills to build their confidence.

Develop outdoor skills over time. This can be as simple as meeting outdoors and working toward more adventurous outdoor exploration.

Entrepreneurship:

Life Skills: Develop key life skills girls can use forever, like financial literacy, first–aid, and more. Badges are great for this!

Participate in the Girl Scout Cookie and Fall Product programs to build key entrepreneurial skills girls will use for a lifetime! See the back cover of this guide for more information.

3. Incorporate these program processes into your activities: Girl Led:

Learning By Doing:

Cooperative Learning:

Girls shape their experience by asking questions, offering ideas, and using their imaginations.

Girls learn through hands-on activities, talking about what they did, and reflecting on how they would do it differently next time.

Girls work together to brainstorm ideas and problem solve their way toward a common goal.

Make your experience even better!

Make it Happen!

Engage Families

A handy troop checklist.

• Host family-friendly events and a caregiver meeting. • Connect parents to the Volunteer Toolkit, so they can see what girls are doing each meeting.

Here are 10 essential things you can do to make your troop year a success!

• See page 11 for other family-friendly events.

Earn Awards • Badges: Girls build skills

Host an investiture ceremony/parent meeting at the beginning of the year. Let the girls do the planning, and invite the whole family to attend!

Start each meeting with the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Ask girls to share examples of how they have used the Promise and Law in their lives since the last meeting.

Set a plan to earn 4 badges. Events in this book can help you or visit the Volunteer Toolkit

Help the girls decide what they want to do this year in Girl Scouts. What badges, Journeys, and awards do they want to earn? What events would they like to attend?

Attend a council-sponsored event to try new things and meet other Girl Scouts.

Attend a community-sponsored event to explore your community and connect with experts.

Complete a Girl Scout Journey, including a take-action project at the end.

Participate in the cookie program to build to your troop budget to achieve the girls’ goals. Don’t forget about the Fall Product Program, too!

Get girls outdoors! Do an age appropriate outdoor experience or just go for a hike in a local park or meet outside. Check out the events in this book to get you started.

Recognize girls’ accomplishments. Host a bridging event or a court of awards ceremony at the end of the year. Invite the whole family, and let the girls take the lead.

• Journeys: Girls build skills, learn, and then take action to make the world a better place. • Awards: Girls earn these on a variety of topics including leadership and mentoring. • Support girls to earn one of the Highest Awards: Bronze, Silver, and Gold

Build Connect to the Larger Girl Scout Sisterhood • Attend a Girl Scout event in your local service unit to meet other Girl Scouts. • Attend a council-sponsored event. This book is full of them! • Attend a community partner event. • Learn about the history of Girl Scouts. • Set up a meeting where younger girls learn from older Girl Scouts. • Practice Girl Scout traditions and allow girls to create their own, by incorporating: – The Girl Scout Promise and Law into all activities – Meaningful, girl-planned ceremonies, like bridging and court of awards – Girl Scout Spirit—Wear Girl Scout uniforms at meetings, events and on field trips

Make a Difference Through Civic Engagement • Help girls explore their community through service and take-action projects.

Registration Confirmation Packets

Community-Sponsored Events These events are hosted by amazing community partners, who focus activities on the Girl Scout leadership program. Leaders (or other approved adults) are required to attend events with their troop and are responsible for ensuring the safety of the girls. Community partner facilitators are never counted in ratio for the girls. How to register Registration for these events is managed by the community partner. Contact information is included in community-sponsored event listings.

Open and close dates • Community-sponsored events open and close dates may vary. Please check with the community partner for exact dates.

Council-Sponsored Events These events are led by staff, community partners, or volunteers. Leaders or other approved adults are required to attend events with their troop (unless otherwise specified) and are responsible for ensuring the safety of the girls. How to register Registration for these events is managed through the council website at gswo.org/events. * Remember to use zipcode 45242 when searching for virtual events.

Open and close dates • August 9, 2022: Registration opens for program events in September-December.

Once you have registered for an event, you can access confirmation information any time, by logging into your MyGS account and clicking on “My Activities.” Under each event name, you’ll find an attachment with confirmation information. Note: Only the person who makes the event reservation can see this in their My Activities tab.

Who can attend events? Girls Girls must be registered members who meet the Girl Scout grade-level recommendations for the event. However, any girl in grades K-12, who is not a currently registered Girl Scout, may register as a member and attend events and activities.

Leaders Leaders, or other approved adults, are required to attend events with their troop and are responsible for ensuring the safety of the girls unless otherwise noted.

Girls attending individually Unless otherwise noted, Girl Scouts can attend most council program events without a troop. Caregivers must chaperone and be responsible for their Girl Scout at an event. All overnights require adults to be approved volunteers which requires active membership and background check.

Families There are certain events that guardians and siblings can also join in the fun. Find those great events in this Event Guide!

Refund Policy

• November 9, 2022: Registration opens for program events in January-August, unless otherwise noted. • Council-sponsored events will close two weeks prior to the event, unless otherwise noted. Check the online registration page for exact closing dates. If the event you are registering for has already closed, you can call the contact person listed to see if there are any additional spots left in the activity. • Parents may attend any one-day event with their Girl Scout! Any parents chaperoning are only responsible for their own child. • All overnights require an approved volunteer.

If I cancel, can I get a refund? • In order to receive a refund, a written request must be received 30 days prior to the event date. • No refunds will be given after the cancellation deadline with the following exceptions: – Weather: If a severe weather warning is issued, the leader must notify the Girl Scout Center or appropriate contact listed in their confirmation materials prior to the intended departure time. – Illness or Accident: Refundable with a physician's statement. – Transfer: If a child moves from the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio jurisdiction prior to the date of the event, a refund will be issued.

Hamilton County Conservation District will kick-off the event by presenting to girls about watershed management using a model watershed or “Enviroscape”. (2) Girl Scouts will pick up litter along the banks of the Great Miami River at Heritage Park during a regionally coordinated event. This event will take place September 17, 2022. The Caring For Our Watersheds (CFW) program empowers students in grade 9-12 to imagine, develop and create solutions in their local watersheds. CFW is an environmental proposal contest and project funding opportunity. The program promotes watershed awareness and stewardship, values student ideas and offers support while turning ideas into action. Students develop a proposal to the question, “What can you do to improve your watershed?” The top proposals will be matched with a mentor to help implement their ideas and will present their final project. Winners will receive monetary prizes (from $300-$1,000) for themselves and their school or club. Cost

Build a garden that will fit your home’s climate and lifestyle no matter where you live! In this hands-on class, students will explore garden design and learn how to choose the right plants! In this workshop, we’ll explore the joys and challenges of pet ownership, but on a smaller scale! Participants will “adopt” a stuffed friend and create a tiny home for it in class. We’ll talk about the specific care that each pet needs. We’ll discuss as a group what it takes to keep a pet comfy, healthy and safe, while also making them feel loved. Earn your Painting Badge! We’ll start off with some inspiration from famous artists and see what resonates with us! We’ll dive right into discussion about how you can paint a mood with your color choices and composition. Next, each girl will paint a landscape, inspired by the mood they’re wanting to portray. Will they paint a cheerful meadow, a serene beach, or a spooky forest? We’ll incorporate the use of palette knives, sponges, and explore ways to apply paint without a brush. Lastly, we’ll work on a group piece to learn about collaboration and how artists can work together! Cost

Gold Award The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the pinnacle of Girl Scout leadership progression. Open to Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors, this prestigious award challenges them to change the world by solving a community problem in an innovative and sustainable way.

Highest Awards

Silver Award The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can achieve and gives girls a chance to work with a small team or as an individual. Girls focus on projects that make lasting change in their communities.

The Girl Scout Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards are the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn. Through them, girls impact their communities, challenge themselves, and gain an edge after high school.

The Gold Advantage The Girl Scout Gold Award not only impacts the community where a girl lives but it also can impact the future of the Girl Scout who earns the award. Gold Award Girl Scouts join an elite group of women. These women have not only gained courage, confidence, and character, but have demonstrated that they can work hard and change their world. Gold Award projects must be sustainable, meaning they will continue impacting the community long after the Girl Scout has completed her 80 hours of work.

Bronze Award The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Junior can earn. Girls work together as a group to complete a Take Action project that directly benefits the Girl Scout community, or the girls’ local community or neighborhood.

These projects help girls develop lasting legacies from a young age. Earning a Gold Award doesn’t just help a girl develop while she’s in Girl Scouts, it helps her get ahead in life. The Gold Award can help girls get college scholarships, stand out during the college application process, and enter the military at least one rank higher than other recruits. Proving once again that Girl Scouts is the best leadership development program for girls.
